The deadman came to dinner. He sat at the other end of the table. He refused everything but the deviled eggs.

The empty, soft pockets where his eyes used to be looked at us.

We chatted of the latest gossip, the newest news, the usual mundanities. He just sat there and stared.

Towards the end of the night, he lifted a hand to reach for the jug of wine—nearly emptied—but stopped.

Would you like me to pour you some? asked Hannah.

The deadman shook his head. He gave no reason. Just refused.

Would you like anything else at all? asked Hannah.

The deadman said nothing. He just stared.

For a little while, we stared back—until we finally looked away.

2777. Mouth of the Mouth

This is "Mouth of the Mouth." Nobody will believe.

The dream I used to have included a large and wet mouth. It floated down the hallways at night. It was like it was lit by unseen candles.

I wasn't afraid that the mouth would eat me. In the dream, I was afraid the mouth would have very bad news. Someone I loved died. I would never see my parents again. My life would be filled with accumulating absences.

But the mouth never caught up to me in those long and dark hallways. I'd run and run until it felt like I was running straight out of my own mouth into wakefulness. I'd sit up in my bed, trying to get my breath back. But trying to be quiet too. Trying to listen to see if the mouth had escaped out of me as well.
