When the arena is temporarily closed due to needing repairs, what are two armored hunters supposed to do with their surprise vacation time? Go to the Beach obviously!! (Well probably anywhere besides the beach, they’re coworkers, barely acquaintances. why would you want to go anywhere with this guy??)
I yawn as I leave my apartment, seems I have a day all to myself. What to do, what to do… could get brunch? but I’ve already had breakfast. maybe a walk? Yeah, that could be fun, I hummed an old song I used to listen to and waved when needed for when fans recognized me, But it was pretty uneventful.
Ah there’s my place of work, Balada wanted the Arena to be the main attraction, so you’ll always come back to it no matter where you go. hm maybe I’ll see how much longer until the Arena is repaired, yeah that’s what I’ll do. And maybe I’ll call to see if someone would like to hang out after I check in.
As I walked down near the entrance of the arena, simply wandering wasn’t fun after a while, there I see… Sentinel, leaning on the wall, who thankfully, seemed distracted. oh please don’t see me. And started to reverse my trajectory, but when he looked up from his communicator and sat up, I froze, He waved and started walking towards me, oh God, please no.
As I thought about using my jet pack, He closed the distance and reached around my shoulder, and put his arm around my neck “Hey! Any clue why the Arena is closed?? I was just trying to get in but it just says closed” I tensed up and looked at him in confusion “It’s down for repairs” his arm stiffened “Uh okay… any clue why someone didn’t tell me??” I stared at him in disbelief “It was said in the Arena group chat…”
We stood there in silence for 8 seconds before He murmured “I didn’t know there was a group chat…” I froze and sighed and grabbed his waist to pull us off the main road and into an alley, and then made him let go of me, just so I could put my hands on his shoulders. And took a deep breath “Listen, I think the reason nobody told you about the group chat was because they had asked me to say something to you, I don’t know why, but I forgot about it so I apologize”
We stood there quietly staring at each other before He started laughing, “Oh well! -Hehe pfff- And here I thought it was on purpose” his laughter died down slow enough to make me regret getting out of bed, and took my hands off his shoulders. And stepped away from him only for him to come inside my bubble “So are you doing anything today??”
I could only utter “uh” before he threw his arm around me once more and started making me walk somewhere as he started going on about how our day was going to get wayyyy cooler and could only think as he made me wait as he went in to get something from his residence, oh good grief I knew I should’ve stayed in bed today.
`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´ `*•.¸¸.•*
As we walked down to the beach, the semi-permanent twilight sky looked down on us, I couldn’t help but regret that I wasn’t strong enough to refuse the offer of hanging out here, sand and armor don’t mix and like hell am I taking anything off! I turned to look at my Colleague, He had made me carry far too much stuff for just the two of us. He went to get Changed into a more relaxed outfit and looked comfortable, fit for the occasion Honestly. I, however, didn’t wear anything besides my armor.
He finally stopped talking about gun care when we near the restroom, and proceeded to drop everything he was holding in my arms, he only had one small bag with him. He yelled over his shoulder “Hey! Set everything up, I gotta go charge” I huffed and stepped on the stairs leading to my sandy Doom, due to the recently of the beach there wasn’t a lot of foot traffic, so I could start this… party
As soon as I had everything set up, That’s when this guy showed up, of course. I looked back at him to complain when I was shocked into silence, oh my god, is he? No way. He could probably sense the bewilderedness radiating from me because he started to laugh, And hell I had to laugh too.
Though a gasp I question “What-pfff hehehehahahah- what are you-you wearing??” I had to hold myself because I was laughing so hard, he had already calmed down and had his hands on his hips and Snickers. “This, my dear Mandalorian, is empire-sponsored swimwear. I haven’t bought a swimsuit since”
The blue Speedo showed everything, Everything. And He tried not to look down too much but Wow, He made it work. I chuckled as he struck a pose, and it seemed to make him feel justified apparently, as he came closer and said “Huh you know… I think that’s the first I ever heard you laugh that hard” I froze and turned away to look at the water, and could only mutter out “Uh yeah… not every day you see that” and felt warm in the cheeks, I pat the other sunlounger and lean back, he snorts and sat down.
He lifted his hand to where his chin would be and tapped it, he looked down, then up at me, then repeated that a few more times before he snapped his fingers. He jumped up and pointed at me, I pointed at myself and tilted my head. He nodded, and I shrugged, He sighed, but it didn’t seem like he was upset, more so amused.
“Dude, you gotta at least show a lil bit of skin, We’re at the Beach! You don’t see me hiding my amazingness” I felt my jaw drop, the Jackass had a smirk under that helmet, I just know it. And yeah, You can see the amazingness as he calls it, the only thing that wasn’t left to the imagination was his face! The Rest of him was revealing, seeing his naked form beside an-an speedo!! It was still as jarring as when he first came out of the restroom.
I huffed as he started to chant “Take, it, off! take, it, off! take, it, off! take, it, off! take, it-“ I slapped my hand over where his mouth would be, and said with exaggeration “Fine! fine, I’ll take something off. Just shut up!” I took my hand off his helmet and started to take off my gloves. And with flare, started showing off my unguarded hands.
He stared at my bare hands and tilted his head, my annoyance started creeping into embarrassment. As I wondered what he could be thinking, and was about to excuse myself and say the sand was getting into my armor so I could leave. when he grabbed one of my hands and felt it up, ohhh no what was he doing now?? He turned it this way and that way, and he muttered “Why are your hands so soft?” I shrugged “I moisturize”
He started to crack up about that, before letting go of my hand, and reaching into the cooler he bought, pulling out two piña coladas and giving me one. I stare at it, then at him when he puts a straw in, only to shake my head in humor when I realize.
And we remain quiet for about… 30 seconds, sipping our drinks, before he started up again “So, I have to ask, what’s with the armor? It’s pretty cool, but the helmet? I know my reasons, what’s yours?” I looked down at myself and felt some excitement as I launched into explaining the history of my clan, I couldn’t stop smiling
`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´ `*•.¸¸.•*
He was quiet and very animated with his reactions, it was… nice. “Huh, well hot damn. That’s both really sad but also super cool, are you sure you’re the only one left?” He was closer than before as we were both leaning toward each other, his arms were on his knees, and I was messing with my arm guards. “Yes, sadly, But maybe I will be able to rebuild.”
My boots were off, and my pants sleeves rolled up. He was sitting down, then staged a cough, and then he changed the topic, I was thankful for it. sipping on my second cup of the day. It was nice, not caring for a moment, simply sitting while Sentinel went on about all types of things. I was leaning on my hand, nodding at times, He was extremely entertaining.
When he finally stopped talking, it was filled with a comfortable silence, only the waves crashing into the seabed, and the wind rolling the sand around, were heard.
He sat his drink down stood up, and started walking towards the sea. I watched as he jumped in the water, and watched some more as he started to get overrun by waves. I laughed as I too sat my drink down and walked to the water, letting the smaller waves hit my feet. Sentinel washed up near me, he was face down and unmoving. I snorted, He rolled over and crossed his hands over his stomach.
I offered a hand, and he took it. As we walked back to our stuff, I said “So, you got anything going on later?” He snickered “Aw, planning a date? Already?? How sweet.” I Stumble, and am flabbergasted! And-and why would I?? Well… huh- he laughed, and punched my arm, I didn’t feel it through the armor.
He let out a sigh and gave a look around the beach, I gave a look as well, people were arriving and filling up spots, and I knew it was time to go. I handed the rest of my drink to him and started putting my gear back on, he was gathering the stuff. I thought about what he said, even if it was only a joke, it was… an appealing thought, Hm I’ll have to come back to that.
Thankfully he only made me carry the cooler and one of the chairs. We made our way to the restroom, and he, once again, threw everything into my arms and went in to charge. I was alone with my thoughts for ten minutes, minutes I used to think about what to do about… him. It was only a joke, nothing more, but man was the possibilities endless.
He came out and took his belongings back, I waved, He wiggled his fingers, and we said our goodbyes and I went on walking, he went home. It was pleasant overall, and I thought about how I got a glimpse of dark stubble when he was chugging the rest of my piña colada, Yes… much to think about.
Notes
someone take this game from me, I already have too many games. but ngl this is an awesome game and I've been playing non-stop.
also I like to think they are friends that make fun of each other, and He makes him pay for all of their drinks when they go out, and so! They spend A lovely day at the beach because no one else was available, and…. they don’t really have friends outside of their coworkers.
Also, this isn’t that OOC, you just have to read Star Wars Hunters: battle for the Arena, and you’ll be surprised by how much it reads as an actor au >w<
Yes I know Sentinel doesn’t wear the helmet in leisure time but man do I love helmets :3 so wear it he will! Also Disney might remake it so you’re wearing shorts, but speedo storm troopers will always be my love
Ngl the thought of these two growing into a relationship makes me happy so have this where they instead grow into a friendship :) wanted to have something sweet and silly for people to read, so I made this. So hope you dudes like this!!

Walk In Cooler Freezer Services
Tumblr media
For businesses like restaurants, grocery stores, and food producers, walk-in coolers and freezers are some of the most critical pieces of equipment in the building. Any malfunctions could lead to food safety issues and inventory losses, both of which could have a significant effect on the business’s profit margins. That is why it is important to have a trusted HVACR professional available in Baton Rouge for routine service, inspections, and repairs as necessary.
Walk-in coolers function much like refrigerators, but on a larger scale. These coolers and freezers actively generate cold air to reach the set temperature. The cold air is created by a condenser and fans, and the condenser cycles on and off to maintain the temperature.
At AccuTemp, we have extensive experience with walk-in cooler and freezer systems from all the top industry manufacturers, and we can handle any problem you may encounter. We feature highly trained, certified technicians, and we have been serving the Baton Rouge area since 2006

If You Like Piña Coladas (Factory Boys, 3/?)
Jared can’t wait for his shift to end Friday morning so he can go see Jensen in the store. Jared texted Jensen after his shift ended, but Jensen was too tired to talk much.
The last hour of Jared’s shift seems to last all day. He’s not doing much, which doesn’t help. Production is slowed down in anticipation of the break, so there aren’t too many repairs to do. Jared ends up hanging out in the engineering office with the interns and his boss Mark. One of the interns, Osric, seems pretty cool. He’s from Penn State as well, but he goes to the campus in Middletown, two towns away from Hershey. He wants to go to main campus for grad school, so Jared shares about his experience up there.
Finally, it’s time to clock out. Jared punches out and changes his clothes in the locker room. It’s really cold, and the sun won’t rise for nearly an hour. This isn’t Jared’s favorite time of year. But all that falls out of his head when he walks into the store and sees Jensen. He’s ringing up a customer’s order, and Jared recognizes him as one of the deaf employees. At the end of the transaction, Jensen signs “thank you,” and the man smiles.
“Hey, Jensen,” Jared says once the customer is gone. “How’s it going?”
“It’s picked up,” replies Jensen. “Good to see you. Sorry I couldn’t talk last night. Yesterday was brutal.”
“What happened?”
“Not only did they send Valentine’s, they mixed our regular order in with it,” says Jensen, scowling. “So we had four skids to sort through, on the floor, to find our weekly order.”
“Yikes.” Jared glances at the gum and mints on the shelf near the counter.
“Yeah, dodging forklifts isn’t my idea of a good time.” Jensen opens up his stapler and starts loading new staples into it. “We brought two carts up and it took us about an hour to put it all out. And then we had a big delivery from 19 East to deal with as well.”
“Sorry you had such a crappy day.” Jared brings two bottle packs of grape gum to the counter. As Jensen reaches for one, Jared clasps his hand and squeezes it. Jensen’s cheeks color and he smiles shyly. “At least the busy season is almost over.”
“That’s true,” replies Jensen as he scans Jared’s gum. “I’m ready for it to slow down. We keep running out of handle bags because people are buying so much.”
“Man, y’all can’t catch a break.” Jared waves off Jensen when he pulls out a small paper bag. “I don’t need a bag. I’ll just stick them in here.” He sets his lunch cooler on the counter.
Jensen sticks the paper bag back under the counter. “No problem. That’ll be $5.34.”
Jared pulls out his debit card and taps it on the credit card machine. “Man, this is so much better than the old one.”
“Tell me about it,” says Jensen. “I don’t miss that piece of crap at all.” He hands Jared the two bottle packs and the receipt. “Are you going straight home, or…?”
“I can stick around,” Jared answers with a grin. “Keep you company.”
Jensen smiles, clearly pleased. “I won’t pass that up.”
Another customer comes in then, but she goes straight to the baking chips and comes to the counter with an armload of peanut butter and chocolate chips and two cocoa tins. Jensen rings it up and bags it for her with a practiced efficiency borne of experience. She pays and is off in just a couple minutes.
“Are you still working this shift after Christmas?” asks Jared.
“Yeah, up until New Year’s,” replies Jensen. “Then Ruth comes back and I get to stop being late to my other job.” He smiles to take the sting out of the words.
“So, I have to ask,” says Jared. “How do you go from being a candy store clerk to a church secretary?”
“I used to work at the museum,” says Jensen. “The church is right across the street, and one of my coworkers sings in the choir there. She mentioned that they were looking for an administrative assistant, and she recommended me. I worked in the development office at Etown, so I had experience. And once I got the job, I started going to services. It’s a great church. I think you’d like it.”
Jared nods. “Well, if you like it, that’s good enough for me.” Jensen smiles. “How’d you end up here, then?”
“I wanted to start paying more on my student loans,” says Jensen. “So I applied to Chocolate World, but they wanted too many shifts. They recommended I apply to the employee store because it’s more flexible. So I did, and here I am. Originally I worked Tuesdays and Thursdays both, but I stopped Tuesdays because our boss changed the start time to 11:00 AM and that conflicted with my church hours. So I cover this shift when I can instead.”
“You don’t mind getting up early?”
Jensen chuckles. “Getting up at 4:30 isn’t my idea of a good time, especially in the winter, but I’ve learned to go to bed early.—both before and after.”
“Well, I’m glad you do, because I wouldn’t have met you otherwise,” says Jared.
Jensen grins. “Yeah, you’re definitely the best perk of this job.”
Another customer comes in then, so Jared moves away from the counter. But she doesn’t seem to know what she wants, so he goes back to talking to Jensen. “So, you’re off next Friday, right?”
Jensen nods. “Yeah, y’all are too, right?”
“Well, I work my normal shift Thursday night, but then I’m off Friday night,” replies Jared. “So do you want to do something Friday night?”
Jensen smiles. “What do you have in mind?”
“How about dinner?”
“That sounds great. You have a place in mind?”
“Well, what do you like?”
“Just about anything,” answers Jensen. “Pretty much anywhere outside of Hershey is fine.”
Jared chuckles. “Yeah, good call. How about Gilligan’s, the one on Jonestown Road? I could make a reservation.”
“That sounds fantastic,” says Jensen. “I haven’t been there in ages.”
“Well, then, it’s a date.”
The woman comes up to the counter with a bunch of Twizzlers, so Jensen rings her out and gets her on her way quickly.
“I haven’t been on a date in years,” Jensen says quietly.
“I won’t hold that against you, I promise.” Jared smiles encouragingly.
Jensen glances at the clock. “Crap, my boss will be here any minute. I didn’t realize it was so late.”
“No problem. I’ll get out of your hair.” Jared hoists his lunch cooler onto his shoulder.
“You probably want to get home, anyway.”
Jared shrugs. “I’m not that tired. But you’ve got to go, so I’ll text you when I get up tonight.”
“Sounds good to me.” Jensen smiles, that thousand-watt smile that makes Jared’s knees go weak.
“Have a good day at the office,” says Jared with a big smile of his own.
“I’ll try.” Jensen opens the register and sticks an envelope in the bottom of the cash drawer. “Thanks for sticking around. You made the time go faster.”
“My pleasure.”
Jensen reaches across the counter and grasps Jared’s wrist. He pulls Jared in and leans over the counter to give him a soft, sweet kiss. Jensen tastes like piña colada Ice Breakers, which are Jared’s favorite. Jensen must have a pack stashed behind the counter. “Good night, sweet dreams.”
Jared grins so wide he feels the stretch in his cheeks. “They will be now.”

"Sorry to bother you, Chief," you said following the man's moves through your house. Charlie Swan was carrying a reclining chair with ease leaving it in the middle of the living room while you stood at the bottom of the stairs with your little four year old daughter in your arms. Cassie was exhausted. It had been a long plane ride and a bit more road travel, which knocked your little girl out as soon as you set foot in your new home in Forks. It was a long time since you had seen that place but of course you remembered Charlie Swan as kind as he had always been. Even when you were just starting to think about moving back to Forks he was the first to help you get a safe home for you and your daughter. You remembered looking up for Charlie's old phone number hoping it was still the same and when you dialed and heard the man's voice behind the phone you sighed in relief. At last life seemed to be smiling on you after a long time and Charlie was quick to offer to help you if you decided to return to town.
He told you about a house for sale next to his. The owner was elderly and preferred to live with one of her children and earn income from the house near the forest that could be bought by curious tourists so Charlie convinced her to sell you the house and at a lower price than she was originally asking because the house needed some repairs that he could do. So you thought no more about it and packed your things to return to Forks after the horrible years you had lived in Brownsville.
Charlie picked you up at the airport in his police cruiser and avoided turning on the siren cause Cassie was already half asleep in your arms when you got off the plane and he didn't want to disturb her, but Cassie had the strength to stay awake long enough to make him promise that next time he would turn on the siren as they drove around town.
The truth was that Charlie Swan was an angel. He arranged everything so you would have a quick return and even now he was bothering to get all your stuff out of the moving truck so you wouldn't have the worry of doing it later.
"Nonsense, I'm happy to do it. Besides, it's my day off."
"And that's why you shouldn't be doing all this. I know vacations for police officers are non-recurring."
"I'm the chief, I have certain privileges."
"Still."
"Well, I wasn't going to let you do this on your own" he replied, carrying the boxes with your and Cassie's clothes. He set them down on the kitchen island and leaned back against them to rest. You walked over and settling Cassie better in your arms you sat down in one of the chairs Charlie had given you "Billy and Jacob will be here in a little while to get all this settled so you can have your first night here without any problems."
"I still think it's too much. Stop spoiling me like this, Charlie, you even gave me part of your dining room!"
"Ah, it was nothing. Bella and I recently bought a new one and we didn't want to take it to the dump cause it still has some use. The table is made out of good wood and the chairs are freshly upholstered. Look at it, it suits perfectly!"
"That's not the point" you said, glancing sideways at the newly arranged dining room near the kitchen "The point is that you're doing a lot for me and it's not fair."
"Your father would have done the same for Bella if it had been about me" he replied reaching for a bottle of water from the installed cooler. A sudden tension appeared in the room as you both remembered what your father's life was like in Forks "Jackson was my best friend for a long time and when he died...I promised him that I would seek you out and support you as if you were my own and that is precisely what I am doing."
"You wouldn't have if I hadn't left and hadn't abandoned him. He died because of me"
"That's not true."
"He was left alone when I left. He died of grief"
"He died from the heart valve disease he had. Your father suffered it from a young age and even so, you had a right to look for your mother"
"I wish I hadn't" you murmured, cooing to Cassie who was beginning to get annoyed by the noise of your voices "I abandoned my father and didn't find anything worthwhile"
"Well, that doesn't matter anymore, stop tormenting yourself and thinking you killed your father. I was with him. He loved you and he died peacefully, remember him as the good man he was, child."
You sighed. Cassie went back to sleep peacefully
"You're right. I'm sorry."
"Don't worry, sweetheart. I know it's not the same, but you have me now and I'd rather die than let you leave again, do you hear me?"
"Easy, I have no intention of doing that" you half smiled "I'm running away from the tracks I left in Brownsville, I have no desire to go back under any circumstances. What I'm worried about is that the tracks won't rub off and show the way to the one I'm hiding from"
Charlie clicked his tongue.
"That should be the least of your problems. I have a gun and I know how to use it. He'll have to deal with that first before he gets to you."
"Thanks, Charlie."
"Although, if Chief Swan is as good at shooting as he is at fishing then you'll have to learn how to handle a gun yourself, honey" a voice appeared from the doorway followed by a young man's laughter.  You looked up meeting the unmistakable face of Billy Black next to his son Jacob. Billy entered your house being pushed by Jacob leaving him next to Charlie as he rolled his eyes "Be a little more modest, buddy."
"There's nothing wrong with bragging once in a while."
"Yeah, but you do it all the time."
"Shut up."
"Make me"
Charlie got up from his spot lunging towards Billy who ina swift movement spun the wheels of his chair avoiding Charlie's attack thus beginning a chase through the house dodging the obstacles of boxes on the floor. Jacob laughed taking Charlie's place in front of you.
"I thought we were coming to help with the move, not to watch them play like preschoolers?"
"Me too. I think Cassie will get along with them."
"Your little girl will beat them up right away"
"Probably."
You giggled quietly avoiding waking Cassie as Charlie and Billy finished their game to go back to the truck and get the last boxes, then you could finally get everything settled at home. Jacob smiled, looking at you
"I'm Jacob. You may not remember me but..."
"Are you kidding? I used to give you the bottle."
"No you didn't."
"Of course i did! My dad used to visit your parents a lot and he used to take me with him. You were a newborn baby and I used to volunteer to help Sarah feed you. You were the worst baby ever. You cried too loudly and squeezed the bottle with your swollen gums. Then you'd throw the milk back and you used to get really messy. Your poop was the smelliest I could remember."
"Don't say that!" he replied, embarrassed "I see you do remember me."
"And Quill and Embry. Tell me, are they still the same old fools?"
"They haven't changed at all."
You laughed.
"Perfect."
"Ok, these are the last boxes" announced Charlie walking into the house carrying with him a small box with Cassie's toys. Billy came in behind with some boxes on his lap "I think now we can get everything organized and finishing in time for you to get some rest."
"I'll clean up the little girl's room" offered Jacob standing up "then I'll fill the closet and set up the bed so you can lay her down, you must be tired from carrying her around for so long. is that okay with you?" he asked you. You nodded
"Yes, thank you Jacob."
"You're welcome. Give me that" The boy took the boxes off his father's legs and picked up Charlie's, all with one arm and with the other he carried the folding base of the bed. You opened your eyes wide
"Easy, big guy, when did you get so strong?"
"I don't know. It just... showed up" he replied disappearing up the stairs
"It showed up" said Charlie "Ah, I hope shows up something like that to me"
"Don’t hold your breath as that happens" Billy joked.
"I should do something for lunch" you said trying to stand up. You were going to put Cassie down on one of the couches and put some cushions around her, but Charlie won't let you. Billy agreed
"None of that. We'll order something."
"But..."
"Nothing" interrupted Billy "We'll buy pizza"
"You guys really need to stop doing this" you reproached. Billy picked up his phone
"Ah, sorry, you had to say that earlier, I'm already on the call."
"You guys are unbelievable"
Charlie smiled
"We know. oh I'll get Bella, she hasn't said hello yet" Charlie walked out before you could say anything else and closed the door dismissing the moving truck. Billy smiled complicitly, placed the order, gave the address and left the cell phone on the kitchen bar
"Dinner is served."
"Thank you."
"They had children's menu, so I ordered it for Cassie. I hear their brownies are delicious. Maybe I'll steal it for myself."
"I'll keep it as a secret"
Billy nodded with a smile and as the food arrived you chatted animatedly about what had happened in your absence, he also told you things about your father and all the times they went fishing together before his death. You were enjoying Billy's stories when time began to pass and Charlie didn’t return with Bella as he promised. Jacob was finishing Cassie's room and when the pizza arrived he came downstairs immediately, asking about Charlie's whereabouts.
"He went to get Bella, but he hasn't come back yet."
"That's strange, his house is right next door."
"Maybe something came up for him at the station" Billy shrugged.
You  decided to wait for the Swans to eat, but seeing that they didn't show up Jacob offered to investigate what was going on when suddenly the door opened and a very worried Charlie Swan walked in wiping the sweat from his brow
"Bella’s missing."
"What?"
Jacob suddenly became alert and Billy remained static in his place. You felt a knot in your stomach. While riding in the police cruiser that morning, you had heard something about tourist disappearances and wild creatures killing people in the woods and you feared Bella might be in that kind of danger. You were never close, but you knew her and occasionally went out together to talk or share a movie night. You still hadn't seen her after the years you were away and the least you wanted was for something bad to happen to her.
"Did you talk to any of her friends?"
"She was with them during classes, but they lost track of her on her way here. I'll call the Cullens, maybe..."
"You didn't know?" asked Billy "The Cullens left Forks, Charlie."
"Where did they go?"
"We'll find her" encouraged Jacob "But we have to go out and look for her before dark."
"I'll go with you" you said "I'll take Cassie to her room and..."
"No, no, stay" Charlie asked you "I left a note for Bella at home in case she comes back she’ll know that she has to come here and wait for me. If she does, call me right away, please" you nodded
"I'll call Harry and ask him to join along with the boys" Billy said and wheeled away down the hallway holding the phone to his ear. Charlie and Jacob left and you decided to take Cassie to the room, go down to the kitchen and make some coffee for the Brigadiers and Bella. If she was alone in the woods and the night was catching up with her then she was going to need something hot to get her strength back.
You hoped with all your heart that she was all right. For her, for Charlie.
.
.
.
Hours passed one after another with no sign of Bella. Your driveway was carpeted with people and police cruisers specially brought by Charlie to search for Bella. The entire town was scoured by officers from the early hours of the night, yet there was no trace of the chief's daughter. You decided to join the search taking the opportunity that Sue Clearwater was playing with Cassie - who was awakened by the ruckus of the patrol cars - asking if it was a good idea to search for her in the woods, but Harry refused.
"It's too dangerous, we don't know what might be among the trees. We can't risk losing any more people."
You were about to object his words when Jacob came up to you putting a hand on your shoulder telling you that he was right and that the forest was something not to be taken lightly. So you gave up, deciding to go back inside and refill the coffee pot when Jacob alerted Charlie that someone had found Bella.
A tall man walked in a straight line toward the Brigadiers where Billy and Harry watched him with restrained relief. He had a stocky frame and Bella unconscious in his arms seemed to weigh no more than a feather. His cropped black hair was messy and his lack of a shirt told you that the icy cold of the city didn't affect him at all
You knew him. His face was very familiar yet strange at the same time. You were back in Forks after a few years, but you knew that no one could change that much in that period of time.
Sam Uley was holding Bella and Charlie took her in his arms as he came out of the stupor and relief of having found his daughter. The Brigadiers sighed in unison and Billy thanked them all. You wanted to do something, to approach Charlie, to ask him if he needed help with Bella, but your eyes were caught in Sam’s.
They were dark, wild, like the forest behind him. You remembered him perfectly.
Before you left Forks you two were close friends and came to like each other as something more, but your leaving ended that and what you might have been up to that point.
You tried to look away, but then Sam's huge body began to shake, his knees buckled and he fell to the ground resting his hands on the dirt. Harry Clearwater reacted and approached him asking if he was okay.
"Tired" you heard him whisper causing you to shudder. Harry helped him up, whispered something in his ear and after taking one last look at you he disappeared into the woods. Harry walked back towards you.
"I thought the forest was dangerous"
"For us."
"What do you mean?"
Harry looked at you. Then he looked at his wife with Cassie in her arms standing at the doorway . He smiled.
"You'll find out soon, child"

The ride passed in comfortable silence, the three of you listening to the radio and Lucy looking out the window at the cars in the next lane. All Frankie could think about was how nice it was to have someone else there to spend the day. He knew Lucy must have been feeling the same way, since he hadn’t seen her so excited about a beach trip in a long while.
He appreciated how patient you were with her; it was something he noticed even on that first day. The way you refused help until you knew she was alright. That moment had stuck with him more than anything else.
The memory of what Will said earlier surfaced in his mind. He shifted in his seat and glanced at you. Yes, you were beautiful. Strikingly so. A woman who could walk into a room and turn every head in the place; both men and women alike. Of course Frankie had been taken with you. He tried to suppress it, scolding himself whenever he was alone in bed at night and found his thoughts wandering....
His only goal right now was to be your friend because he cared for you and knew that you needed help. He wasn’t sure what kind of help, but he sensed that you were alone and at some point in your life something very bad had happened to you. He wouldn’t pry though, he would wait until you were ready to share.
-
The beach wasn’t too packed; it was still early in the season and  the tourists hadn’t moved into their summer homes yet. The boys had done an oddly efficient job at setting everything up. When Ben and Will got into a little spat about how to sink the umbrella into the sand , Frankie simply rolled his eyes and continued to spray Lucy with sunblock. It made you laugh, they all seemed so comfortable with one another.
The day was hot and everybody seemed eager to get into the water, everyone except you and Frankie.  You had bought a bathing suit at the store, intending on going in... but somewhere during the car ride you changed your mind.
“You can go in if you want,” you told Frankie “I don’t mind just watching.”
He shrugged, “I don’t normally go in either.”
Then just like that the two of you were suddenly alone, both woefully unprepared for any sort of conversation.
You thought of something quickly, filling the silence “the marina was packed today.”
“Yeah, It’s always like that on memorial day. Most of the summer too, be prepared for the restaurant to start getting busy.”
“I prefer it that way. It makes the shifts go faster. So I’ve been meaning to ask, what exactly do you do? I assumed you owned the marina?”
He paused for a moment. “Uh, technically I do. It was a wedding gift from my parents. An uncle had died and left it to them. I think they just wanted to get rid of it, but I have an office manager that does all the upfront stuff….. normally I just work on repairs.”
Married. That wasn’t what you were expecting, but still no ring. “Did you go to school for that?”
“Kind of. I had training for planes, but you would be surprised just how similar the two are.” You gave him a look. He glanced at you and laughed sheepishly. “What?”
“I’m sorry, did you say planes?”
“Yeah”
“You fix planes?”
He smiled and crossed his arms, trying to seem much cooler than he actually was. “I fly them too.”
“You fly pl-....do you take constructive criticism?”
He laughed, “Of course.”
“Lead with that next time.”
He looked at you skeptically. “How am I supposed to lead with that, exactly?”
“You say, hi my name is pilot Frankie …..”
He shook his head, grinning. “Morales,” he informed you.
“Hi my name is pilot Frankie Morales, nice to meet you.”
He played along, “but how will I know if people actually like me for me, or they just want me to take them for a ride in a plane?”
You shrugged “it's tough being a celebrity, I don’t make the rules.”
“Oh yeah, celebrity, that’s me,” he said sarcastically.
You kicked at the sand with your foot. “Also I liked you before I knew you had the coolest hobby in the world. So, you know that you can trust me.”
He glanced over at you and immediately noticed your smile. He had seen you smile before, but they would never quite reach your eyes. This one, he could tell, was real. He opened his mouth to speak when, in the distance, a wave crashed and Lucy squealed with laughter. Both of you turned your heads to look.
“Will Lucy be okay out there?” you asked. She had on a life vest and was being supervised in the shallows by the rest of the adults. Santi was holding onto a boogie board Lucy used to keep herself up.
“Yeah, I know they seem like idiots but they are good men.” Frankie reached into the cooler to grab a bee and popped the cap off with the bottle opener. “Do you want one?”
You shook your head, “No thank you, but I’ll take a water bottle if you have it.” He set his beer down in his cup holder and reached into the cooler again. The bottle was freezing cold when he handed it to you. Perfect for a sunny day.
You wiped the condensation off on your dress. “Can I ask you something? It’s okay if you don’t want to answer.”
“Yeah, sure,” he said, taking a sip of beer.
“Lucy’s mom is she….? Are you two still….? I don’t mean to pry, I guess I’m just a little confused.”
“You and I both,” he said with a sigh. “I’m married but we are not together anymore, haven’t been for a few years.”
“Oh,” you said simply, not finding any clarification in what he told you. If anything, you had more questions, but you didn’t want to push. Besides, it didn’t matter anyway…. you couldn’t, you were married as well. “Does your family live in the area?”
“Nope, they live up north. Katie never really knew her family. She grew up in the foster system and was bounced around until she enlisted at eighteen. It’s just me and Lulu now, and the guys when they find the time to travel here.”
“I’m sorry,” you said honestly. “It must be hard not having your parents support.”
He shook his head and took another sip. “I expected it, even when I was younger, it seemed as though they were only interested in keeping me alive.” He looked down and started to peel off the sticker on the bottle as he spoke. “They are both doctors, mom is an archaeologist and dad an engineer. He actually helped design parts of the international space station…. I think they valued their careers more than anything else... they still do. The only time they ever came down to see Lucy was right after she was born, aside from that it’s usually a phone call on a holiday and a card with money in the mail.”
Although he tried to play it off as if it were just another part of life, you could see that it still affected him deeply. For a moment you thought about reaching out to take his hand, but you stopped yourself. “It really is their loss, they are missing out on two wonderful people.”
Frankie adjusted the baseball cap on his head, a sheepish little smile playing on his lips at the compliment. “Well, thank you. Lucy and I could say the same thing about you. You’re great with her.”
You glanced back at the little girl. She was smiling happily as Ben pulled her along on the boogie board. “I think little girls need to be protected, but not only that - they need to be seen and heard. She is already so independent and fierce. I can see how you encourage her to be her own person and not fit into any one mold. That’s important for little girls to learn.”
He laughed, “Yeah, she definitely gives me a run for my money, that's for sure. She can already repair an engine better than most men I know.”
A large gust of wind came through and took hold of the multi-colored beach ball beside you. Both you and Frankie sprang from your seats to race after it. The thing was fast, and you could not stop it from crashing into the waves. You noticed just how much cooler it was near the water’s edge. Although the temperature outside was sweltering, the Atlantic still held that winter chill. Both of you stared at the ball as it bobbed up and down with the tide.
Frankie waved it away with his hand and squinted in the sunlight. “It’s fine, it’ll probably just float down the beach to another family or something.”
You smirked at him “or choke a poor dimwitted sea turtle to death.”
He paused and shot you a pretend glare, then took off his hat, dropped it in the sand and reached for his shirt.
You giggled “no, no I’m joking. I got it.” You said, starting to strip down to your bathing suit also.
“Well, you gotta be faster than that,” he said, half jogging to the water.
You slipped off your dress easily and ran straight past him into the waves. Frankie was not far behind. You two were pushing against the tide as you reached for the ball. Fingertips just barely brushed against the plastic before it slipped a couple more inches away. This left just enough time for Frankie to swoop in and grab it.
Your stomach hurt from laughing so hard “hey!”
He shrugged, “I’m sorry that I care more about the environment than you.”
You splashed him with water playfully.
-
The two of you swam for another fifteen minutes, chatting about the town and volleying the ball back and forth. Frankie pretended not to see the way the droplets of water clung to your skin and sparkled under the sunlight. When he noticed the little lace pattern on the bottom of your swimsuit, he knew he had been staring for too long and forced himself to look away. The very last thing he wanted to do was scare you away, or make you believe he had some sort of ulterior motives to helping you.
You both dressed again before walking back up to the chairs. When the two of you returned, the group had already come back from swimming. They were passing around Tupperware full of fruit while Santi was starting up the tiny little grill he had brought.
“You guys really don’t play around for beach days,” you mentioned to Frankie.
“I tried to warn you,” he said with a smirk.
Will had Lucy thrown over his shoulder, carrying her easily with one arm. “Has anyone seen Fry?”
“I’m right here!” Lucy’s little voice drifted out from behind him.
Will started turning, pretending to look for her “Fry! Fry! Where are you!”
Lucy was hardly able to speak through her fit of giggles, “I’m behind you!”
He put her down on the sand, pretending as if he had seen her for the first time. “Jesus Fry! You scared me!”
“Lulu,” Frankie said, “come here so I can put more sunscreen on you.” Frankie took the bottle from the bag and sprayed her again, making sure to get her ears and the tops of her feet as well. He sprayed some in his hands, and Lucy scrunched up her nose as he applied it to her face.
Watching the two of them together made you smile. You were reminded again just how different Frankie was from your husband. David would have felt emasculated by having to take care of a child. If he had attended today, you would be sitting beside him silently the entire time, only getting up to fetch him a beer.
“Do you want some?” Frankie asked, and you were suddenly snapped right back to reality.
Even though you weren’t threatened by a burn yet, you figured it would be a good idea. “Yeah, thank you.” You offered him your arms, then the front of your legs.
“I used to be terrible with remembering sunblock until I got sun poisoning in Iraq, god never again.”
“Iraq?” you asked, and turned so he could get the backs of your legs.
“Yeah, with the air force” he told you, assuming you already knew.
Breath hitched in your throat as he brushed your hair over your shoulder. You cringed at the feeling of the warm sunscreen hitting the back of your neck and jerked away. It was enough for the others to notice. You laughed and lied quickly “damn horse flies hurt when they bite. They say you should wash off the bite with soap to get it to stop the swelling. Is there a bathroom here?”
You sounded believable. Becoming an expert liar had been the only thing keeping you alive for so long.
Frankie felt horrible. He didn’t quite know what he had done to trigger you, but he knew it was something. “It’s pretty far, I can walk with you-”
You shook your head, a wide smile still plastered across your lips. “Nope, I just need a direction.”
Santi jumped in quickly. “That building when we first came in, near the tennis courts.”
You nodded and started forward, tears stinging at the corners of your eyes. Why was this happening right now? You were fine a moment ago and now you felt as though you couldn’t catch your breath. You shivered, remembering the feeling again and putting your hand on the back of your neck to stop it.
A soldier…. it made sense. You were too stupid to have seen it, the nicknames and the holiday......
Thankfully, they were single stall restrooms; you pulled the door shut and locked it behind you. The bottom of the floor was disgusting and filled with wet sand. You lifted yourself up onto the counter and sat, trying to calm down. A soldier, a soldier, you kept repeating to yourself. It was too similar. The anger, the potential for violence…. just like your husband.
You placed your head in your hands, and suddenly you were back in New Jersey. It was a bitter February, snow still on the ground. You were in your bathroom hiding as David raged in the living room and screamed at his coworker on the phone. A little boy had been killed by his father weeks ago. David was assigned to the case. When the trial came, the jury found the man innocent and let him walk free, even though all the evidence pointed to him as the killer. It was an embarrassment to David and the entire homicide unit
“God fucking dammit, y/n! y/n!”
You pulled yourself up on shaking legs, straightened your dress and walked out. David was red in the face waiting for you. “I thought I told you to call Comcast, did I not?”
“They said that they could get someone out here Wednesday because of the snow-”
He took the television remote and threw it at you as hard as he could; he aimed for your face but it hit your shoulder instead. The plastic connected straight with your collarbone. You doubled over in pain, holding it as it throbbed. He stalked up to you and you moved back, the fear evident in your eyes.
His voice was teetering on the edge of lunacy as he screamed at you.
“I give you a simple fucking job to do and you can’t even get it done. You’re a lazy fat fucking bitch.” he shoved you hard but you manged to keep standing. “Spend all day sitting on your fucking ass while I have to go to work for the both of us! I need the television because I need to see the news coverage of the fucking case! You knew this! Or would you like me to get fired and the both of us live on the fucking streets!” He shoved you again, and you fell against the stone fireplace. Your hands came up to shield your face as he picked up the remote and hit you with it repeatedly. It caught your lip, busting it open.
You didn’t care about the blood, all you could think about was the gun still holstered in his belt. You got the television fixed the next day-
“Summer?”
You stood quickly and wiped away the tears from your cheeks, pretending like nothing was wrong. “Yeah?”
“Are you alright?”
It was Frankie.
You shook your head and smiled in the dingy plastic mirror in front of you. “Yeah, why?”
He could hear that you had been crying. He pushed on the door but it was locked.
You didn’t like that at all; you slipped off the counter and sat on the floor, against the door. Bracing it closed with your body “I’m fine-”
“You’re crying-”
“No, I’m not I- I get allergies and that horsefly hurt. I am such a baby I’ve always had a low pain tolerance-”
“If it’s something that I did -”
“Nope, it’s nothing that you did. I’m fine, I’m really, really fine I promise. I just got overwhelmed and needed some air. I’ll be back in a few minutes, and you guys can eat without me. Don’t let me hold you up.”
Frankie wasn’t convinced, but he didn’t want to force anything. “Would you like me to save you a plate?”
“Yes, please.”
You could hear his footsteps start to retreat and relaxed a little.
“Summer?”
“Yeah?”
Frankie was about to say something, but he thought better of it. He figured it was better to let you have your space now.

this love
Intelligence thought they were dealing with a small drug operation within the limits of their own city, until their wires got crossed with the Feds. And with the Feds an old friend has come back into town, trying to repair old wounds.
A/N: We are nearing the end of this story, with one more chapter. Possibly two because, you know, things change as I write and I think one more might be necessary. There's a small change with this chapter at the end, a slight different POV for just a minute. You'll see it when you get there. I felt like it was a needed moment in the story, so sorry for the change.
Previously in Chapter 4
this love on ao3
“Hailey, second message…. I saw you called me but you didn’t leave a voicemail. Call me back when you get this, I love you.” He ends the voicemail and looks up from his desk to see Trudy standing over him. “What’s up, Sarge?”
“What have you been up to the last few hours?” She asks casually checking the watch on her wrist.
“I’ve been in interrogation for the past few hours… We picked up some low level dealers and we were trying to get the names of some of the suppliers.” He can feel the small edge in her voice and his detective senses are starting to go off, something doesn’t feel right. “Why?”
“Listen… Don’t freak out…” She starts, but his gut was right, something was definitely wrong.
“Trudy.” He nearly pleads.
“It’s Hailey, alright. All I know was when they were out on surveillance they saw someone watching their car. She radioed in for help and I sent Adam and Kevin to go help them… But by the time they got there, gunfire had been exchanged. She’s awake and at Med getting treated. That’s all I know.”
He doesn’t say a word but gives her a nod, reaches for his truck key, and finds himself running down the stairs of the district.
                                  ________________________________
The roar of the engine is the only sound he hears as he drives down the streets of Chicago. It’s dark, a cooler summer night and he sees people on the street- walking their dogs, holding hands with their partner, sitting at restaurants drinking a glass of red wine.
The things he wants to do with Hailey- they haven’t had the time yet.
He hits a light and curses under his breath, feeling the vibration of his phone in his pocket.
“Halstead,” He answers sharply.
“Halstead, this is Dr. Halstead…” Will sarcastically replies.
He doesn’t miss a beat or give any banter back, “How bad is it?”
His brother must hear the panic and fear in his voice, “Calm down, Jay.”
“Don’t tell me to calm down, all I know was that Hailey was shot hours ago and I am just now finding out about it. She’s my wife, Will, don’t make me ask you again.”
“I’m sorry man, I didn’t know you didn’t know. But it was a through and through, in her abdomen. I would have taken care of her myself, but seeing as we’re family now, I wasn’t allowed to treat her. I did stay in the room, with her permission.”
“And?” He asks, he knows there’s more that Will wants to tell him.
“It was cleaned out, she is getting stitched up as we speak. Minor internal damage, but she doesn’t need surgery to fix any of it. She’ll need to take it easy for the next week, and come back for an MRI in ten days to make sure the internal stuff is healing and that there is no infection. Dr. Marcel treated her, she’s on some antibiotics for preventative measures.”
“Thank god.” He breathes under his breath.
“How far out are you?” Will asks him.
“Ten minutes- I’m pulling police privilege and double parking outside the ED.” Jay says, mostly to himself because he can’t imagine wasting five or ten more minutes trying to find a parking spot.
“I figured you would- I already warned security, not that I really need to because you’re a cop…”
“Thanks man,” He takes a breath as he turns the corner, “And how is Erin?”
“Some bruised ribs, concussion from hitting the concrete. You know I shouldn’t be telling you any of this, but more or less she got out cut free. And listen, Jay, I know you’re still bitter about things with her, but stay calm when you’re here, ok? Hailey is alright…”
“I will. See you soon.” He hangs up the phone, turning on the lights of the truck, not wasting another second.
                                 ________________________________
It’s cold when he enters the ED and he immediately remembers why he hates this place. The dull lighting, the sterile smells, the doctors, the needles.
He sees Will standing at the nurses station with two cups of coffee in his hand. “Here you go, bro… You look like you need it.”
Jay shakes his head in response, taking the cup from his hand. “Where is she?”
“This way.” Will says gesturing for his brother to follow him.
As they round the corner, a flash of familiar brunette hair stops him.
“Jay.” Erin says, matter of factly.
“Erin,” He says curtly, because he wants to be mad, angry, and upset at her. He wants to be so many things. She walked away unscathed, and it was his wife, Hailey- his partner- was the one who took the bullet. And Hailey, she doesn’t deserve that.
“One hell of a partner you got there,” Erin says, signing a piece of paper. “She’s tough, just like you.”
“She is,” is all that he can seem to muster.
“Listen,” Erin says, placing the pen on the counter. “It was inevitable, we were waiting for Ruz and Kev to show up, but it all happened so fast. Hailey saw the car first and knocked me to the ground to get out the line of fire. I’d probably be dead or hooked up to a ventilator if it weren’t for her, okay?”
“Erin…”
“I’m just saying, I owe her my life, Jay. Show her a little grace, she was just doing her job. You would have done the same thing, even if it were me… And she’d be the one coming to you like this.”
“I’m glad you’re okay, Erin…” Jay says but hears his wife’s voice in the distance.
“Go.” Erin says, pointing to a curtain a few feet away.
“Yeah this way,” Will steers him towards the curtain, “I’ll check in on you two in a bit.”
Will pulls the curtain and he sees her blonde, erratic hair covering her face as she’s reading some paperwork.
“Hailey Anne Upton.” Jay breathes, half in relief, half in frustration.
She laughs at him, handing the nurse a five dollar bill.
“I told you.”
He walks in, stands at the foot of the bed and raises an eyebrow at her.
“You are right,” The nurse smiles, taking the paperwork from Hailey’s hands. “Attractive, protective, and one hell of an ass…. You sure did score.”
“I did.” Hailey muses making eye contact with him.
He stands his ground, staying at the foot of the bed and crosses his arms, eying his wife who is in a hospital gown.
“I’m fine.” She says, almost nonchalantly, trying to reach for her go bag on the bed.
“Hailey…”
“You know it’s nice to see you on the receiving end of this kind of news. Seeing as I’ve seen you in here because you’ve been shot on me… Twice now.” She laughs, but the movement causes her to wince a little and hold her stomach.
“I told you laughing would hurt,” The nurse says. “I’ve got your discharge paperwork all ready, once you change and talk with him, I’ll come back and we’ll get you out of here.”
The nurse leaves the room and it’s finally just the two of them.
‘Why didn’t you call me?” He asks, rounding the bed and sitting by her feet.
“Because I know how you would be, Jay. Look at you.”
“Of course I am like this, you got shot.”
“It was a through and through, okay. I passed out on the concrete because it hurt like a bitch, but once I got here I realized it wasn’t that bad. I wanted to save you a few minutes of panic and heartache.”
“Well hearing the news from Platt, it was a little more shell shock than I would have thought.”
“I was going to call you once I was in the car, I passed out from the initial blood loss, Erin thought it was worse than it was… How is she by the way?”
“She’s fine, getting discharged as we speak. She’s got some bruised ribs and a mild concussion.”
“Jay….”
He stands watching his wife try and put on her shirt from her go bag, but struggling to lift her arm up.
“Let me help you,” he walks across the bed and grabs the shirt from her bag, noting the familiar button down. That’s my shirt.”
“It looks better on me.” Hailey smiles as she turns around.
He reaches for the ties on the hospital gown and gently pulls them undone. His hands are ice cold because he hates hospitals, but he hates them even more when Hailey is the patient.
“Your hands are ice-cold,” She notes, turning around. They’re face to face now and she can see the worry in his eyes. “Help me pull this off.”
He nods at her, but takes his pointer finger and runs it over the base of her jaw, staring at her intently. He knows her body, knows how there is one small freckle on the left side of her neck just under her ear; knows the scar on the back of right knee is from an accident when she was wrestling with her brothers when they were kids, knows how her left pointer finger has a scar from a fight with an offender during her rookie year when they almost got her service weapon… Now she has her own bullet scar to match his own. It’s a scar he’d never want her to have to live with.
She can sense his hesitation in wanting to take the gown off, not wanting to have to picture her with gauze and bandages. “Hey,” she stands on her tiptoes and kisses the base of his jaw. “Listen, if it were that bad, you would have been called.. You’re my emergency contact and Will would have called you. I told him not to because I was awake and coherent and could consent to treatment.”
“I should have been there, Hailey.” It’s all he can respond to her, because he feels guilty. She’s his partner- his wife- he promised to be there for her in sickness and in health, and promised to protect her with his body if it came down to it. Not that she couldn’t hold her own, because his wife most definitely could, but still he should have been there.
“There’s the Jay Halstead guilt I was waiting for,” She laughs as she slowly reaches her arms out towards him. “Help me with this please.”
He laughs at that, because damn, she knows him. Slowly, he bends down a bit, and reaches for the shoulders on the gown and pulls them down slowly, letting the gown fall to the floor. He unbuttons his flannel, throwing it over her arms and pulling it around her chest. He starts to button the shirt, his fingers warming thanks to her excessive body heat. He’s halfway up the shirt when he feels her fingers under his chin, tilting his head up towards her gaze.
“You know I love you, right? That I promise to do my best to come home to you every day.” Her words are quiet, and tears fill her eyes.
“I love you, too, Hailey. And I promise my damn hardest to always come home to you, too.” He stands upright again, finishing the buttons on the shirt, ignoring the gauze and bandages because they’ll be there tomorrow, right now all he needs is her. “But for the love of god, we’re not allowed to separate anymore, we stick together, for my own sanity, I beg of you.”
“Best partner I’ve ever had is you, in all arenas- personal, professional, even sexually. You’re pretty good in bed Halstead.” She laughs and reaches for the sweatpants in her bag, looking at him for help.
He rolls his eyes at her because she’s just trying to make him feel better, and damn her because it’s working. He squats to the ground, giving her his shoulder for balance as she steps into each leg of the sweatpants. He pulls them up to her waist and gives her a small kiss on her hip.
“Too bad sex is probably off the table for a little bit.”
“Uhhh, yeah…. But we can do other things.” She gives him a wink as she sits on the bed. “A little help with the shoes?”
“Yes,” He laughs at her, “I never thought I’d tie your shoes until you were massively pregnant one day, but there’s a first time for everything.”
“You and me both.” She agrees, “First time for everything, though. Let’s get my boots back on and take me home, Jay.”
“That I can do.”
                                 ________________________________
Erin Lindsay wanted to stop by Hailey’s room and thank her, again, for saving her life.
As her hand reached the curtain to announce her arrival, she heard Hailey’s voice in the room and Jay’s sigh in response.
“There’s the Jay Halstead guilt I was waiting for, help me with this please. ”
She knows they are talking, a husband and wife moment, a partner moment, but for some reason she stands outside the curtain and listens into their conversation just a bit more as Hailey speaks again.
“You know I love you, right? That I promise to do my best to come home to you every day.”
“I love you, too, Hailey. And I promise my damn hardest to always come home to you, too. But for the love of god, we’re not allowed to separate anymore, we stick together, for my own sanity, I beg of you.”
“Best partner I’ve ever had is you, in all arenas- personal, professional, even sexually. You’re pretty good in bed Halstead.”
She releases her hold on the curtain because she’s heard enough- she knows they’re good for each other.
She saw it in the way Jay looked at Hailey, she experienced it in the car when Hailey told her Jay had learned to keep snacks in the car for her.
She could hear it in the way they just whispered, I love you to one another.
She turns on her heels, because another thank you can wait until tomorrow.
Tonight, Jay and Hailey need each other. She thinks back to emptying her and Jay's apartment, her choice in not telling him what was going on back then. They're both older and wiser now, and she's grown just like him. Her wounds are closing, she's healing in her own time. But tonight, she's glad to see he's healed- found someone to take half of the weight of the world that they live in. She prays one day, she'll be able to have what they have.

“What exactly are we doing here?” Kathy asked as she parked her car in the lot outside the crematorium. “On the phone, you said you had business to attend to, but Aria, I don’t understand what sort of business you have all the way here in Stone Ville.”
The said woman sighed. She didn’t want to worry Kathy with her theories, nor did Aria want her sister to judge her, but she did owe her an explanation for driving her to the mountains.
“I just have a few questions I need to ask the Funeral Director regarding Mr. Webster.”
Kathy raised a brow. She was sure that Aria had been suspended for a week; she also knew that her sister was lying. Sighing in annoyance, Kathy shook her head.
“It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me, but I hope you know what you are doing.”
Aria didn’t, but she was thankful that her sister had her back.
“Thank you,” she uttered. “Once I get the answers I’m looking for, I swear I will fill you in on everything.”
“You’d best,” Kathy retorted.
Aria excused herself from the car and walked towards the parlor. The parking lot was mostly empty; a white Lincoln Town car sat near the entrance door, so she assumed someone was inside. Walking in, Aria took a brief look around, but no one was there. Where was the director? She tried their office, but again, no such luck.
“Excuse me,” Aria exclaimed. “The front door was open, so I just came in.”
She heard a sudden noise; the sound of an alarm going off and followed it downstairs. Ending up in the basement, Aria immediately noted the temperature change. It was much cooler in the parlor. She located the source of the noise, a cremator in action, and stood in front of it. Through the spyhole, she could see flames eating away at a coffin as an unnamed body was disintegrated. How sad.
A sudden fake cough made her jump, and Aria turned to see a younger man behind her, wearing a suit.
“Are you here for the procession, ma’am? I have to admit, I wasn’t expectin’ anyone to come,” he said.
Aria raised a brow. She wondered why.
“Um … no actually I came to speak to the Funeral Director. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
“It’s no problem,” the male retorted. “Unfortunately my momma ain’t in right now, but I can have her call you once she arrives.”
Aria hummed in misfortune. She had no idea when the said woman would be in and she was sure the Funeral Director was the same person she spoke to on the phone the previous day. Her stomach was in knots; the entire trip was a bust.
“No, it’s fine. I can come back another time, but I appreciate it,” she uttered.
Turning towards the cremator again, Aria sighed.
“It’s a shame. No one should have to go out alone.”
“I see it too much ‘round here,” the young man mentioned. “People from the mountains are brought in and no one comes to see them off.”
Aria widened her eyes. Did he mean the attack victims?
“All of them?”
“Since 1993, yeah. And not all of them are animal attacks,” he answered.
Snaping his fingers, the young man cleared his throat.
“You know what I heard? Them murders didn’t start happening until the old hospital shut down. Do you know the one?”
“Yeah,” Aria answered.
She had transferred a year before the mentioned hospital was closed down, following a rumor that the hospital director, Al Lester was pocketing money that was meant to go towards repairs and the expenses got too much for him to handle. But Aria didn’t hear anything about a murder.
“What do the murders have to do with the hospital?” Aria asked.
“You see, there is this journalist who did a story on the disappearance of her friend, and she believed there was a conspiracy going on at the hospital that led to his death,” the male answered.
How did Aria not know about this?
“What is the journalist’s name?”
“Alyssa something,” he answered. “I first heard about her articles from Ben Bertolucci. He came here askin’ questions but Mama sent him away.”
Aria grinned. Perfect.
“Listen, I have to go, but I appreciate the information. You have been more than helpful.”
“Joseph,” he mentioned. “My name is Joseph.”
Aria gave him a nod.
“Thank you, Joseph.”
She tossed him a wave and rushed from the funeral home back out to the car. Kathy turned the radio down as she got in and raised a brow.
“How did it go?”
“It went great,” Aria answered. “I need to get home and look up a few more leads, but I think I am on the right track.”
Kathy was happy for her, but at the same time, she was worried. She had no idea what her sister was trying to uncover, or that she had opened a can of worms that could never be resealed. Kathy knew that she should have urged Aria to stop but instead, she turned the radio up and tore out of the parking lot, heading back to Raccoon City.
Perhaps she should involve Albert.
Tumblr media
Aria got home long before her husband did. She said goodbye to Kathy and watched her drive away before she reentered the house. Paying no mind to her growling stomach, she went to the bedroom and booted up her computer. There had to be something online about Bertolucci; perhaps an article or his number. Aria wanted to learn more about Alyssa but without the last name, she wasn’t certain she’d be able to find her.
There were so many questions she needed answers to, but once she tried to go onto the internet the connection failed. Aria raised a brow and tried again, but to no avail. Was the internet out? Perhaps she forgot to pay it.
Of all the times.
Aria bounced her leg as she tried to think of a solution. Every idea she had required her to go into town and it was much too late to visit the library. What should she do? An idea came to mind and she retrieved her phone from her pocket, messaging Jill. The said woman insisted she save her number the night Barry got so drunk at the bar during one of their outings that Aria had to meet her in town and take him home. She was the team’s DD on occasion, but she never messaged them for any reason other than that.
“Sorry to bother you at work, but can you do me a small favor,” Aria said out loud as she typed the message.
She explained that she was without internet and that she was looking for any information on Ben Bertolucci. Her reason for doing so was a lie, but Jill didn’t need to know that. Once the message was sent, Aria hummed in annoyance. She sent a separate message asking her to forward any information she learned to her email.
“And please don’t tell Albert. If he knew I was a fan he’d only pester me about it,” she concluded.
And send.
Speaking of which, Aria sent a text to her husband as well asking if he knew why the internet was out. She was still upset with him, but there was no way to avoid talking to him. Aria even felt a bit guilty that she forced him to sleep on the couch the previous night. It annoyed her how easy it was to forgive him; she truly did love the man despite his callous demeanor with certain situations. He was blunt and Aria could not blame him for it.
A chime alerted her that she had a new message. It was from Albert and what it said made her blood boil in anger.
I had it disconnected until you get better. Sorry.
Until she got better! Aria tossed her phone to the floor with a curse. Warm tears stung her eyes as she tried to contain the urge to cry. Why was he treating her like she was insane?
I am not sick.
The past few weeks came rushing back to her. Albert was right to assume to murders had affected her. They had. Aria was scared to death of what had rocked their flourishing city. Her eyes widened as tears leaked down her cheeks.
Am I losing my mind?
Fear of the unknown had devoured her.

Different Worlds Part One : Nestor and Maggie .
The next day you went to work with your coffee and honey in a thermos and headed into the clubhouse to say hi to the guys.
“ You’re looking better today ma.” — Coco said.
“ I’m feeling it my man gave me some extra love.” You smiled.
“ Good”
“ I have a loose mirror on my bike Maggie do you mind looking at it?” Ez asked
“ Sure I’ll take my coffee and see what’s up with it .”
You headed outside after placing your things behind the bar .
You saw EZ’s bike near Angels and went over to it with some tools. Hmm somehow the metal that held the mirror in place had gotten bent, So you went and looked in the extra parts and found a new one. You sat on the seat of the bike and unscrewed the old one and then put the new one in it’s place. Then Bishop walked up to you and saw you finishing the repair .
“ Are you feeling better sweetheart ?”
“ Yes I am .”
“ Good you sound like it. There are some of those blueberry Pop Tart things behind the bar if you didn’t have breakfast yet.” He smiled a little .
“ Actually someone made it for me this morning but I know they are there for another day .”
He nodded. “ All right, we have some fresh beer that needs stocked later.”
“ All right I’m finished with EZ’s loose mirror. The metal got bent somehow.”
You got off the bike and headed back into the club to handle things behind the bar after a swallow of your coffee.
You were taking beer out of the cardboard cases to put in the cooler when you heard Angel. “ Hey Maggie.” He gave you a smile.
“ Angel.”
“ Purple is your color.”
“ Well someone is a smooth talker. A friend of mine likes it on me in the bedroom too.”
Angel looked at you for a moment. “ I didn’t think women did that .”
“ Did what , talked about getting laid ?”
“ Yeah .”
“ News flash we do along with how fine our mans asses look. You need a woman Reyes .”
EZ heard the conversation and laughed. “ Yes he does.”
“ Shut up little brother just because you’re all domestic and in love doesnt mean everybody has to be.” Angel rolled his eyes and lit a cigarette.
You tossed a pack of gummy worms at Angel. “ To take the edge off.”
Meanwhile across town at the Galindo estate:
Nestor was having some target practice with his new Glock . He had gotten it a few weeks ago but was still breaking it in. He smiled when it fired smooth into the paper target on Miguel’s gun range. Your weapon needed to be reliable in this career choice.
Then his phone buzzed beside him on the table.
“ We need to make a run to the border , will be back tonight.”
“ Will be at the truck in a few.”
He scrolled through his phone and found Maggie’s number
📱 To “: Sid.” “ Hey i have to make a run to the border . Probably won’t see you tonight .” ❤️ “ Diego” ( Nes)
You had just opened a case of tequila when your phone buzzed. You saw the text form Nestor and typed a quick reply.
📱. To : “Diego” “ Be careful, I’ll miss you but I will have a date with my Greys Anatomy.” ❤️ you back. “ Sid” ( Maggie)
You put your phone in your front pocket and went back to placing tequila on the shelf with the other hard liquor .
“ Maggie be careful doing the heavy lifting so you don’t strain your back.” Taza said
“ I have lifted heavier things before but it’s sweet that you get all protective Taza.” You smiled.
Bishop , Hank and Taza treated you like an unofficial daughter here.
You worked behind the bar for a while and got Gilly a beer..
After the new stock was in its place you went outside for a cigarette break .
“ You must be better if you need your nicotine hit.” Creeper commented.
“ It’s been a few days, still might have a stubborn sniffle.”
He nodded and his dog came over. Lobo was an aging boxer mix but a sweetie The dog pressed his head against your thigh to be petted, “ Sweet boy.”
“ You’d be good with a dog Maggie.”
“ Someday maybe .”

Dragonfly - Chapter 3
JJ Maybank x female!reader
Summary: Y/N spends a day out on the boat with the pogues, getting into drinking games and competitions
Warnings: some swearing, dodgy grammar
Word count: 2.4k
Catch up: Chapters 1 - 2 -
A/N: I feel like this is a little rushed but I was only free for a little bit this evening and I’m busy all of tomorrow cos it’s my sisters birthday and I wanted to get another chapter written before then - feedback is always appreciated :)
Tumblr media
You had woken up relatively early today, you always do when you are anxious or excited about something happening that day - today that was meeting up with Kiara and her friends and going out on the water, and if her friends are as nice and cool as her, that could be considered an almost perfect day in your books. This also meant you were overthinking every little thing this morning, from what bikini you should wear to if you should put make up on and everything in between.
After changing outfits about 10 times, you finally decided on a yellow bikini, which showed off your figure really nicely and made your tan look even darker than it was, with some black shorts and a cropped white vest covering it. You then put on some small hoops, a silver anklet and before heading downstairs, you gripped the dragonfly charm of your necklace and did a silent prayer to your mum, saying hi and that you loved her.
After she had died, this had been part of your everyday morning routine and if you forgot because you were in a rush or just not thinking on that particular day, your whole day felt wrong and out of place, so you kept it up, a way of remembering her and keeping her close to you.
When you got downstairs, your dad had already left, leaving a note on the side saying he had gone out looking for some clients that he could do some plumbing for and to search for more materials for the house repairs. You grabbed a pop tart out of the cupboard and stepped outside to see what damage the hurricane last night had done. It didn’t look awful, there were a few fallen branches littering the outside space, all luckily not hitting any of the windows on the house, or your car for that matter. You then locked up, getting into your car and heading over to the Wreck to meet Kie.
She was waiting outside of the building when you got there, waving when she saw your jeep approach, you quickly parked it before going out to meet her.
“Hey,” you say as you got near her, “I didn’t know whether I should bring any food or drinks? If so I can always run back and get some.”
“No you don’t have to, don’t worry, but hey if the guys like you and this becomes a more common thing, there’s no harm in more drinks.” She laughed, putting you at ease.
“Okay, I’m fine with that,” you began walking down the dock after she grabbed the cooler at her feet, chatting about her friends and what they were like.
“Well they will all probably try and flirt with you, not only because you’re gorgeous,” you blushed at her compliment, “but also because I’m the main girl they hang out with and even though they still say those sort of things to me, I’m very used to them now so its boring them.”
She smiled at you, trying to reassure you, “But don’t worry they’re all really nice and they might have a few issues, but I mean, who doesn’t?”
You laughed, “very true.”
Just as you got to the end of the dock, a boat began approaching, you could just make out the faces of those onboard, one of them you didn’t know, but the other two were John B and JJ. Your stomach did flips when you noticed this, how had you managed to bump into them this many times without trying?
“Oh god,” you muttered under your breath, stepping back slightly, causing Kiara to look at you quizzically, not understanding what had caused you to react like this.  At least not until the boat pulled up to the dock and JJ called out to you.
“Hey Y/N, are you stalking us now or something?”
You took a breath before responding, plastering a smile on your face “Well I saw your pretty face once and I just did everything in my power to see it again even getting a job with Kie.”
He laughed at this, holding out his hand to help you onto the boat, “Well I’m glad you went to such lengths,” he leant down towards your ear, “especially because your face isn’t too bad either.”
You rolled your eyes, about to make another remark when Kie interrupted you, “wait you guys know each other?”
“Not really,” John B answered, smiling at you in greeting, which you happily returned before he faced Kie again, “we’ve just bumped into her a few times in the past couple of days, like we helped with her car yesterday and saw her surfing the day before.”
Kie just nodded before looking at you, you just shrugged, showing it was all down to coincidence, but you didn’t mind - this was an acceptable answer for her as she sat down, opening a beer.
The other guy then spoke up, “Well I haven’t met you yet, I’m Pope.”
“Hi, I’m Y/N.” You smiled at him, accepting the beer he handed to you, and going to sit down next to Kie, JJ sat opposite with Pope, whilst John B was at the wheel, steering the boat.
“So, Y/N,” Pope began saying after there had been silence for a few minutes, “they said they met you when you were surfing? Does that mean you’re good at it?”
Before you could answer, JJ spoke up from where he was now lying down, “Oh she’s really good, we saw her do a few tricks out there,” he looked over to you, “which was really hot by the way.”
Beside you Kie muttered “oh my god its only been 5 minutes.”
You tried not to laugh at her reaction and turned to Pope, ignoring JJ for now, “I’ve been surfing for most of my life so I guess that has made me pretty good at it, although there’s still plenty of tricks I can’t do. Do all of you surf then?”
“Yeah, living on island doesn’t make it easy to have other hobbies some of the time, so we all started surfing young as well.” John B said from the wheel.
You all made some small talk for a while, asking about where you’re from, how you’re finding life on the island so far, asking how they all knew each other and other stuff like that to fill the time until you reached your destination.
Eventually, John B stopped the boat, pulled off his shirt and without a word to anyone, jumped into the water. Everyone else took this as their cue to get undressed, you included, Kie and Pope jumping into the water before you had even got your shorts off.
You felt JJ’s eyes on your body once you were just in your bikini, you raised your eyebrows at him, “see anything you like?”
Instead of answering he just smirked at you before turning and jumping into the water where the others were waiting. Ignoring that interaction, and trying to put the thoughts of how good he looked with no shirt out of your head, you jumped in after him.
You had been in the middle of talking to Kie when JJ sent a huge splash of water into you,  getting into your mouth and eyes, causing you to swear as you coughed up the water you’d accidentally swallowed.
“You dick! You’re gonna regret that.” You say, laughing slightly as you sent a wave of water his way, too fast for him to dodge it completely.
After that it was an all out war, everyone trying to splash everyone else, laughter and swearing filling the air, you were happy, feeling like you had been friends with these guys a lot longer than half a day. Still wanting to get a more specific revenge on JJ for causing you to swallow water, you submerged yourself completely, quickly moving to where he was treading water, and grabbing his legs and pulling him under with you. He squirmed in shock before relaxing, you let go of his legs and moved towards the surface, laughing as you saw him trying to make an angry face unsuccessfully as he was smiling at your antics.
Wanting to get another drink, you made your way up the side of the boat, even if your ass was in full view to everyone, not that you minded that much, knowing it looked good and that it was a way of teasing JJ. There was something about him that you just couldn’t shake, obviously he was beyond attractive, but so were both John B and Pope, he just intrigued you, his sense of humour was similar to yours but you felt that was only the surface and you wanted to know more about him. Or you could just keep winding him up, which was fun as well.
As you sat there with your beer, the others began getting out of the water for a small break as well, Kie coming onto the boat first, smiling at you, happy that you seemed to fit in with this group really well.
You all sat there, drinking in a comfortable silence, when Pope announced he wanted to play a game or something similar.
“Does anyone have any ideas for what we could do?” Kie asked after everyone agreed to Pope’s idea.
“Uh there’s the usual - like truth or dare, never have I ever, some sort of competition…” John B listed off on his hand
“I’m up for anything, but not sure I want you guys to see how competitive I get when you still don’t know me that well.” You laughed, regretting saying anything when JJ looked up at you, a mischievous smile on his face.
He clapped his hands together, “competition it is then!”
You stuck your middle finger up at him in response, causing him to smirk, you looked away, not wanting to end up smiling at him when you were currently feigning anger at him.
“Okay,” John B started, “what kind of things should we compete in?”
“What about drinking? So like whoever can chug their beer the fastest.” JJ said, seeming confident that he could win, but he was yet to drink with you and you were almost certain you could win this.
“I’m up for that,” you say, then looking over at JJ, “I hope you’re ready to lose pretty boy.”
“Pretty boy?” He scoffed, “Can’t think of a better nickname? And trust me I won’t lose.”
“Thats your nickname until I find one more suited to you at least.”
You turned away from him to listen as Kie laid out the rules, drink as quickly as possible and turn the drink upside down over your head to prove you’ve finished it - she would be judging this one so she handed you all a new beer.
“Okay…go”
The four of you began chugging, the drink easily moving down your throat and you quickly finished, putting the empty bottle over your head, a small drop escaping onto your hair. You turned to see all 3 boys finishing after you, you cheered at your success before addressing JJ, “suck on that Maybank.”
“I would much rather you do the sucking.” He laughed as you playfully hit his arm, slightly shaking your head at him.
“Wow, Y/N,” Pope said, “I think you’re gonna fit in this group quite nicely, even if you can outdrink all of us.”
You smiled at him, not only because of your success, but also because of how he said you were part of the group, and you couldn’t deny you really wanted some great friendships when you moved here - and it looked like you might have found it.
“What else can we do then?” Kie asked.
John B responded, “what about who can do the best jump or dive off the boat?”
There was a groan from Pope at that suggestion, but the others seemed up for it, as you were now dried off from being in the water and you didn’t want to go back in just yet, so you offered to be the judge for this one.
“Afraid you could lose this one?” JJ teased
“No just want to give y’all a chance to win before you start resenting me for how amazing I am.”
He laughed, “whatever you say.”
John B was the first to jump, followed by Kie, then Pope, all trying to seem as impressive as possible, leaving just JJ to jump. Before you could say anything, JJ had picked you up, put you over his shoulder and jumped off the boat, ignoring your protests as you plunged into the water.
The others were laughing as you reemerged from the water, removing yourself mostly from JJ’s grip, ignoring that he still had his hand on your back.
“Well, after that stunt, I think Kie definitely wins.”
She let out a cheer from where she was treading water, the boys all looking at you as if you’d played favourites, but you just held out your hand in an attempt to stop their protests.
You all stayed like that for a little while, just in the water and chatting - from time to time doing another sort of challenge, which you kept winning much to your delight and everyone else’s dismay. Then the day began turning into evening, so you all got back onto the boat and began heading back.
You and Kie were the first to get dropped off, both climbing out of the boat after saying goodbyes to the boys and as they left she turned to you, “well seems like I’ll be seeing you loads with work and you now being part of the pogues.”
“That is alright isn’t it?”
She smiled at you, “Absolutely, you don’t know how long I’ve waited for another girl to come into this group, and you’ll certainly keep us all on our toes, especially JJ.” She smirked at you.
“Don’t know what you mean.”
“I’ve almost never seen JJ lost for words, but he didn’t seem to know what to say to you at times today, and hey by what I know about you, you two would certainly be cute together.”
You laughed, “Nah flirting is one thing, but a relationship isn’t really what I want at the minute, too much stuff to work out.”
She nodded, “Fair enough, anyway I’ll see you at work tomorrow?”
“Yep, see you then.” You say, getting into your car before driving away.
The whole way back, you were singing loudly to your music, happy and content after the day you had, and for the first time since your mum died, truly looking forward to tomorrow.

Leaping through Wildflowers
Read on AO3
Nov. 2nd, 2020: Exult, v
1: to be extremely joyful; to rejoice
###
It had been an awful couple of weeks.
Geralt had been shortchanged the past 4 contracts, which wasn’t in itself eventful. But the hunts themselves hadn’t been easy, and the cost of repairing his armor and buying more supplies had dwindled their supply of coin. The last few villages had been barely tolerating of a witcher, much less one with his own bard. They weren’t interested in hearing about Geralt’s past exploits, booing Jaskier away in each tavern and inn. They spent nights in barely serviceable rooms with a poor excuse of a stew for dinner far too many times to count… but certainly less than the amount they had spent sleeping on the hard ground between towns, a stringy rabbit split between them. The heat didn’t help their attitudes either, it being almost difficult to breath with how much humidity permeated the air.
Both had passed the point of anger and were solidly in a state of mental fatigue and physical exhaustion. Geralt had started steering them north, searching for greener pastures and nicer towns. He’s always had better luck in the north, the people more used to the mutant appearance of a witcher. It was also nearer to Oxenfurt, which served as an epicenter for Jaskier’s songs, bards spreading the witcher-positive lyrics out in waves. It was also cooler there at this time of year, winter coming soon. The north was better, in every way.
They crested a rise on the path they were following northward, and Geralt heard a soft gasp from the man walking beside him. The sloping field in front of them was utterly covered in soft yellows, whites, and purples. The late summer heat and humidity had led to a burst of wildflower growth and even Geralt had to admit that the sight was stunning. Jaskier bounced on his feet next to him.
“Geralt…” he gasped. A quick glance to the side stopped Geralt in his tracks. The bard’s face had so much color, a slight flush across his cheeks and his jaw hanging partially open. His eyes sparkled and darted from side to side, lighting on bright patches of color in front of him. Geralt’s heart clenched in his chest; it had been too long since Jaskier had looked so happy. He hated that he couldn’t give him that joy on the Path.
“Geralt, please… can we stay here and never leave?” The bard’s eyes finally met Geralt’s golden ones, pleading with the taciturn witcher.
“Hmm.” Geralt grabbed Roach’s reins and started back on the road through the field, ignoring the whining of the bard behind him. It wasn’t but a few turns into the field before he found what he was looking for. A stamped down area off the path and under a willow tree; a camp site. He led Roach under the tree and started unloading some of their dry rations.
Jaskier hadn’t yet realized they were stopping, but he knew once he heard a gruff, “Just for a few hours.” He fell silent and stared at the back of his closest friend and secret crush.
“You really do love me, don’t you?” He asked flippantly, to mask the stuttering of his heart. He didn’t wait for food or an answer, choosing to turn and run through the wildflowers near the willow tree. Geralt turned to watch him go.
Luckily, as Jaskier leapt through the wildflowers with a youthful abandon of a man half his age, he didn’t turn back to look at Geralt. If he had, he would have seen the answer to the question he asked shining clearly from the soft look Geralt directed his way.
Maybe the south had a few things going for it. Maybe they could stay… just for a day or so.
