A-T-3 255 Gwen Guthrie - Seventh Heaven
Gwen Guthrie's second album Portrait is released in 1983. It was recorded at Compass Point in Nassau with the same all-stars as her debut, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Wally Badarou, Darryl Thompson, and Steven Stanley. As you'd expect from such a prolific songwriter and backing singer with a great supporting cast It's a terrific album
Larry Levan had remixed It Should Have Been You which was released as a single from her debut album. Levan was given the master tapes for Portrait and to Island Records horror spent too much expensive studio time to their liking remixing it, and this was when record companies had budgets to spend on lesser known artists. I remember watching the Brian Duffy documentary The Man Who Shot the 60s, Duffy produced the now iconic sleeve artwork for David Bowie's album Aladdin Sane, his advice to Bowie was spend as much of the record company's money as you can and then to recoup there investment they have to promote you. Promotion budgets are a big deal, you could have made they greatest album of all time but if nobody knows about it it's going to get buried. It helped that by Aladdin Sane had had his breakthrough and was already being seen as a major star, Gwen Guthrie wasn't that fortunate
Perhaps Larry Levan didn't spend enough of Island's money because his remixes sat on a shelf for two years and other than his remixes for Peanut Butter and Hopscotch the only place you could here Larry Levan's other remixes from these sessions was at the Paradise Garage played off reel-to-reel tapes. Paradise Garage was one of the most famous clubs on the planet and it was Larry Levan that made that happen. Gwen Guthrie became known as 'The First Lady Of The Paradise Garage' because of her live performances there and Levan playing his remixes of her records in his sets.
In 1985 Island release some of Levan's remixes as the mini-album Padlock (Special Mixes). The mini-album is credited to Levan with Gwen Guthrie demoted to featured performer alongside Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Wally Badarou, and Darryl Thompson. We can extract from this decision that it was decided by the record company that Larry Levan was creating demand for these records to be put out and it was Levan' name that would get punters handing over their cash. Padlock sold much better than Portrait once it was released, Peanut Butter was reissued, Padlock was released as a single, as was Seventh Heaven (in the UK this came out around the time of Gwen's biggest success Aint Nothing Going On But The Rent in 1986, with Levan's remixes of Getting Hot and It Should Have Been You off Gwen's self-titled debut)
Going back to the issue of samples like I mentioned the other day Seventh Heaven, the Larry Levan remix, has been sampled in hip hop, rnb, and dance music over and over for tracks by the likes of Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Busta Rhymes, Leaders Of The New School, Redman, Dilated Peoples, El-P, Public Enemy, Amil feat Beyoncé, Eric Sermon, Kenny Dope, Spinna, Tek 9, Dj Krust...

Marianne Faithfull - A Child's Adventure (1983)

Anthonius - Goshinboku - global dance grooves from Madrid-based producer & guests
Anthonius' new album, GOSHINBOKU, is a musical journey that explores the fusion of different cultures and sounds. The mini LP features contributions from acclaimed South African artist Sibusile Xaba and other talented musicians from around the world, resulting in a unique and captivating listening experience. The album blends acoustic, electric, and electronic instruments to create a powerful and intimate sound that travels from the heart of Africa to Cuba and Europe. With tracks like "La Ceiba," which infuses Cuban son with contemporary beats, GOSHINBOKU is sure to get listeners on their feet and dancing. Other tracks like "Sunrise in Lagos" and "Disco Zulú" pay homage to the great African music producers of the 80s, embodying the Afro-boogie and Afro-disco sounds of that era. "A Night in Belize" is a tribute to Wally Badarou and his Hi-Life, while "Le Demond De la Foret" serves as an enchanting introduction to a tale inspired by Ghibli stories where humans and animals unite to save the planet from industrial collapse. A-T-3 002 Tom Tom Club - Close To The Bone
Tom Tom Club's underrated second album. The recording was very similar to Talking Heads Speaking In Tongues album, personnel are the same minus Jerry Harrison and David Byrne, and like Speaking In Tongues the album is made between Bob Blank's Blank Tapes in New York and Compass Point in the Bahamas... you can tell by the end results the differences are significant
The impact of 1981's Genius Of Love by the Tom Tom Club was huge, not much else sounded quite like it at the time, certainly nothing in mainstream pop music. Close To The Bone sounded more like a continuation (now packaged together on CD), Close To The Bone wasn't as innovative and by 1983 pop music had caught up with it
Tom Tom Club - Pleasure Of Love as with the sleeve artwork James Rizzi returns to direct the video. Great harmonies from the The Weymouth sisters on this

Grace Jones September 6, 1977
GRACE JONES … born in Jamaica but brought up in Syracuse, in New York State … the daughter of a clergyman, Grace has seven brothers and sisters including a twin brother… became a model in New York. a career that eventually took her to Paris … arrived in France at the same time as Jerry Hall; the two shared the same modelling agency … started singing “because someone saw a chance of making money. It was while I was still living in Paris. These people knew I was already successful modelling and there’s this assumption that all black Americans have great voices” … cut there’s I Need a Man, a huge gay disco hit ... her act pegged "pure flame" by the influential rock critic Nik Cohn. "Musically, lyrically, it was nothing, but the rhythm track drove harder than Mario Andretti and the title line was ripped home with such insistence, such merciless repetition, that struggle as one might, one ended up brainwashed, forced to hum along" signed to Island Records, made two highly successful disco albums … and the classic La Vie en Rose single … before changing mood and style of her music with the Warm Leatherette album … recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Grace's band included Jamaica's rhythm twins, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, guitarists Barry Reynolds and Mikey Chung, keyboards player Wally Badarou and percussionist Sticky Thompson album made an immediate and extraordinary impression, defining a new dance style that fused elements of funk, reggae and new wave rock … it was followed, in 1981, by Nightclubbing, which further refined the Compass Point Style and the Grace Jones Attitude … the Compass Point trilogy completed with the release of the Living My Life album and the One Man Show tour … Grace made her major movie debut with Conan, the Destroyer ... Slave To The Rhythm, the single and the album, released to huge success in 1985. Both were produced by Trevor Horn … Grace's movie career continued with the James Bond film View To A Kill… Grace Jones' retrospective album, Island Life; released at the end of 1985.

Release: August 1, 1991
Lyrics:
Don't play this game with me
You know you came to be my world
When times were bad enough
Seems I was good enough
You run out my door
You come back, and beg for more and more
Just like the times before
You'll always be
Guaranteed a place inside my heart
I would never forget a single thing
Always be a martyr to your heart
Then you'll never regret a single thing
You think I just don't care (just don't care)
The fact is, I could not bear (could not bear)
To lose this kind of loving touch (I love your touch)
Would you be bothered much?
You had so much planned (so much planned)
So take time to understand (understand)
My reasons for pulling you back to me (back to me)
You'll always be
Guaranteed a place inside my heart
I would never forget a single thing
Always be a martyr to your heart
Then you'll never regret a single thing
You hide so many years
(Hide away)
You cried so many tears
(Cried away your tears)
You think I just don't realise
(Now I realise)
One thing I've come to know
(If you stay)
This pain will surely go
(All the way with me)
So soon before your very eyes
Guaranteed a place inside my heart
I would never forget a single thing
Always be a martyr to your heart
Then you'll never regret a single thing
Guaranteed
Guaranteed a place inside my heart
I would never forget a single thing
Always be a martyr to your heart
Then you'll never regret a single thing
Songwriter:
Mark King / Michael David Lindup / Peter Husband Gary / Waliou Badarou
SongFacts:
"Guaranteed" is a song by the English musical group Level 42. It was released on the 1991 album of the same name. It was the group's first single of the 1990s and was released two years after the group's previous single, "Take Care of Yourself".
The song was written by Mark King, Mike Lindup, Gary Husband and Wally Badarou, the group's producer and secondary composer and musician. The current guitarist was Allan Holdsworth. The vocals were composed by Mark King, the verses and a duet with Mike Lindup in falsetto on the chorus. The song follows the same structure as the song "Two Hearts Collide", released on the 1988 album Staring at the Sun.
There are two different music videos for this song by the same director: “The Mill”. In all versions the songs are performed in two different locations. The first version outside in the mountains and the second in a white room. The second version contains some parts of the first. Jakko Jakszyk can be heard on guitar in both versions. Guitarist Alan Holdsworth left the group after the album was completed.
It was the most successful track from the Guaranteed album. It reached the top 20 in the United Kingdom. It also enjoyed success in the charts in Europe.
