Zayn to release new music through Island Records in the UK
Former One Direction star Zayn has signed a new deal with Mercury Records in the US. Music Week has confirmed that the UK affiliate will be Island Records. A new single is expected this summer, and his return was teased on Instagram. Zayn Malik was previously signed to RCA for recordings. Earlier this year, Malik signed to UTA for agency representation across music, film and television. Mercury relaunched last year as an imprint of Republic in the US. “As soon as Zayn and I met, I knew we had to work together,” said label president Tyler Arnold. “I was blown away by the new music, but just as impressed by his vision, drive and spirit. We’re honoured he and his team have joined us at Mercury Records. We’ve got an incredible opportunity to tell the next chapter of his story together.” "When Tyler first played me the music I was totally blown away," said Island president Louis Bloom. "I knew we at Island had to do everything we could to be involved. This is Zayn on top of his game and this next chapter is going to take him to the next level. Working with Nicola and Taryn at ZenKai management has been an absolute pleasure too and we are so excited for the world to hear what's coming!” VIA MUSIC WEEK

We’ve got an incredible opportunity to tell the next chapter of his story together.”
"When Tyler first played me the music I was totally blown away," said Island president Louis Bloom. "I knew we at Island had to do everything we could to be involved. This is Zayn on top of his game and this next chapter is going to take him to the next level. Working with Nicola and Taryn at ZenKai management has been an absolute pleasure too and we are so excited for the world to hear what's coming!”
The new era for Malik is arriving at a time when his former bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have reached No.1 in the UK with their most recent albums.
Malik was quick out of the blocks in terms of solo success. Having exited One Direction in 2015, he even beat his old group to No.1 in early 2016 with solo single Pillowtalk (1, 499,632 sales to date – Official Charts Company).
Malik’s debut album Mind Of Mine reached No.1 in March 2016. It has 139,080 UK sales to date.
Although he has registered multiple charting singles, his two follow-up albums failed to make a lasting impression in the UK. Nobody Is Listening peaked at No.17 in January 2021, while the accompanying single Vibez made the Top 50.
Nevertheless, Zayn still has 22.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and his team will have big ambitions for his next campaign.

A WEEK IN NEW YORK WITH BRUCE AND BOB IN JULY 1973
Tumblr media
Lee Jaffe is an artist, photographer, filmmaker, musician and producer who, in July 1973, booked an unknown act from Jamaica to support an exciting new talent from New Jersey for a week long residency at New York's legendary Max's Kansas City. It kick started both performers on their paths to become cultural titans.
Lee recalls the week 50 years ago when each act alternated opening and closing slots for the 40 people who showed up each night, the two legends playing 14 gigs each across the week. Marley was making his first visit to America in support of the Catch a Fire album, while Bruce was promoting his first album. The two bands hung out - while also going to see The New York Dolls at Kenny's Castaways nightclub around the corner and Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden.
Tumblr media
Lee tells the behind the scenes tales of this slice of rock history, joined by several contributors who were there - including Bruce Springsteen, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, E Street band pianist David Sancious, photographer Bob Gruen, publicist Cherry Vanilla, manager Toby Mamis, Geoff MacCormack who went with David Bowie to see Bruce Springsteen, and Warhol acolyte Tony Zanetta who was a regular in the legendary back room at Max's.
This snapshot of a week in the life of one of New York's most acclaimed nightclubs of the 70s, where Andy Warhol held court every night with a stunning array of the art world's alternative elite, recalls the years when decadence was de rigueur among the hedonists who lived and breathed sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.
The club's owner, Mickey Ruskin, prided himself on booking new bands who he believed had something different to offer - which is why Bob Marley and Bruce Springsteen were on the same bill that week in the summer of '73.
A Zinc Media production for BBC Radio 4.

Tuesday, June 6: Andrew W.K., "Party 'til You Puke"
Some 20 years removed from all the hype and controversy, I Get Wet holds up as an epic soccer holler that is nothing more or less than a half hour blast of energy, with any questions about irony or authenticity rendered wholly irrelevant.  And trying to analyze something called “Party ‘til You Puke” in the spirit of assessing its intentions is entirely beside the point.  With Andrew W.K., at least at this stage, the message was right there in the slamming guitars, frantic drumming (courtesy of Obituary’s Donald Tardy) and shouted chorus.  Party til you goddamn puke- that’s all there was, and all there needed to be.
