hii! i just finished reading the dark forest!! what a journey, i think it took me about a month to finish it lol. i wanted to share some thoughts !!

i found some of the concepts fascinating.. what stuck with me the most now i that i (try to) recall everything that happened, was the battle of darkness and the dark forest theory as a whole was brilliant. i imagine those people that were just- endlessly floating in the immensely vast universe and it made me think "oh wow how Sad and Hopeless that must've been" i too would've want to end it all, i believe that's a lot to endure.. that's one

another thing was the infamous wallfacer project. well that was new. and the fact that they had to plan everything on their own bc of the sophons, that's also kind of depressing lol. one thing i was confused was: why was luoji re-elected as a wallfacer at the end? i mean there wasn't anything more he could have done anyways?

da shi as always is such a great person😭 he never abandoned luoji during this long crazy journey, even after 200+ years. honestly i love his character a ton, i wanted to see what would happen to him at the end but there was nothing! will he be on Death's end? or his character just ends here? :((

i thought the whole thing with the "trees" as homes was pretty cool, though i couldn't really see it in my imagination haha i honestly can't imagine what would our society be like in, say, 300 years from now

i found it too simplistic(? that only when the trisolarans communicated with luoji did they stopped their plan to coming to earth, or maybe there's something i missed? or maybe it is really just that: communication solves everything? lol idk

and a deserved special mention to zhang beihai, respect!

i think that's everything i've got on my mind right now, but in general it was very interesting and depressing and dark.... what were some your favourite moments from the book? i can't wait to start death's end next !! but i'll start later, i have to fully process this book first hahaha anyways that's all, have a great day or night!!! :))

hello, friend! it's great reading this ask, and i'm glad you decided to share it with me. i have to say that i read the books years ago, so my memory on everything is not that fresh. and since i read the chinese version, i don't know some of the vocabularies they used in englishn. while i'll try my best to reply to this ask, i'm sure there's gotta be some novel fans here that could do better than me.

the dark forest is indeed very interesting and depressingly dark. i was definitely in awe when i heard the dark forest theory for the first time (before i read the books, and that was partly why i decided to read them). i also really like 水滴/waterdrop or droplet which is just something that looks simple but super super super powerful.

i enjoyed reading about the wallfacer project. even the three failed ones are equally fascinating and disturbing. i want to bow down to liu cixin's imagination...if i remember it correctly, luo ji is re-elected because his "咒语/spell or curse" actually came true. and at that time humans are really hopeless, so they just want to have someone that they believe can save/lead them.

da shi is everything. i lol need a da shi myself. unfortunately, he's not in the third book. my inner shiwang shipper feels that shi qiang and wang miao got similar style of exist from the story. and the common believe (i don't even remember if i read it in the novel or it was fan theory) is that shi qiang dies of natural causes at old age like wang miao. i kinda feel like maybe shi qiang and wang miao promised each other that they'd try to stay alive so that they can both be copernicus *sobs*...

ok...bear with my silly shallow shipper's talk for a moment, you know some people were like shiwang will be no more once season 2 of three body comes out, and everyone will start to ship shi qiang and luo ji, and it kinda bothered me a bit (ps. i know most people including myself didn't ship anything while reading the books, but man, these dramas are really forcing it on us lol). but i don't anymore, because i really think wang miao is special to shi qiang. besides shi qiang being a good and protective human being who will die for the greater good, i think one of the reasons that he stays with luo ji all this time is because luo ji reminds him of wang miao. even though it is only mentioned very breifly, i do believe liu cixin meant to tell us how important wang miao is to shi qiang... “我这辈子还只见着他一个”

as for luo ji stopping the trisolarans, i think he uses the dark forest theory, and his threat of exposing the location of the trisolaris (and in turn exposing earth's location) stops their plan.

and zhang beihai is an awesome, complex, and well loved tragic hero even though he isn't a very major character like luo ji. i remember yu hewei said in an interview that if he didn't play shi qiang, he'd probably like to play zhang beihai. i'm really curious who they'd pick to play zhang beihai in season 2.

as for book recs.. some of my all time favorite books are chemistry by weike wang, nothing to see here by kevin wilson, I’ll give you the sun by jandy nelson (YA), and fire and graceling by kristin cashore. all of those books I love love so much and reread all the time. some other recs (not sure what kind of genre or style you like so just spit balling here but) a thousand splendid suns by khaled hosseini, joy luck club by amy tan, children of blood and bone by tomi adeyami (YA fantasy, read it right before I wrote oasis (idk if you’ve read that piece) so there are some similarities between that world and the oasis world, I’m sure), and mexican gothic by silvia moreno garcia!!

im not as much as an avid reader as i once was but am trying to get back to it lol. but if you end up reading any of these def lemme know what you think!

strangers was incredible 😭 i particularly enjoyed the dynamics you created between namosa (especially samo!!) as well as your characterization of the girls. it was clever how you were able to express the differences between their overall personalities with the descriptions of how they kiss! it felt really smooth and natural while still helping to build a more well-rounded understanding of each girl 🙂‍↕️

as much as i love your writing and want to read more from you, i think this works without a part 2 more than it would with a follow up! i like the idea that sometimes things DON’T work out for you, sometimes you aren’t a good person, sometimes you don’t deserve that happy ending. that’s just life baby 🫡 and i think that’s what made this feel super fresh! we don’t get a lot of these more tragic ends on here and i appreciate that you picked that direction for this

imo you perfectly captured the sort of hurt and inner turmoil that comes with feeling intense guilt and envy and bitterness. it made me so sad to see reader going from promising to tell the girls when she feels something to reader hiding her emotions and instead withdrawing and ghosting the girls knowing namosa never suspected anything was up 🫠

i really loved how you closed it: “you were just another stranger now. you have been for years. and you had no one to blame but yourself.” GAH!!!!! made my stomach hurt from feeling all that regret on reader’s behalf and the pain of knowing all this was the result of selfishness and really just human nature ☹️

on a lighter note, i love a classic jackson wang party 🙏 also jyp was so evil for saying all that omg LMFAO 😭

Since I’m watching a lot of ZZH dramas, I thought I would put up links in one place for myself, and for others in case they want to get obsessed with (or, y’know, just normally like to check) this fucking gorgeous man.

0. Nirvana in Fire (2015) (54 episodes)

This is an obsession that gripped me so badly that I didn’t even liveblog and inflict it upon others. I have already finished this once and am on my rewatch. I was going to put it last because I thought I would list them in the order I have watched, but this deserves to be on top.

I DO NOT GET INTO FICS THAT EASILY and yet, I have already consumed a few!

To be fair, ZZH has a very minor role in this. He plays the younger version of main character Lin Shu. And if you watch it on youtube, his scenes are edited out now  🖕 so I won’t link youtube here.

Main actors in this series are:

Hu Ge  (who I didn’t expect to be get swept by and honestly this much handsomeness in a single person should not be allowed), who plays main character Lin Shu/Mei Chgansu/Su Zhe. Intrigued? GOOD!

Liu Tao who plays Princess Mu Nihuang who is a badass, smart princess.

Wang Kai (just hearteyes all over ok?) who plays Prince Jing, Xiao Jingyan, and has just the kind of chemistry with Lin Shu that my id craves for. (Let me just say, loyalty kink in the series is just off the charts.)

The story is that of revenge, political machinations, love, friendship (or in my case, just ship), with liberal amount of humor sprinkled. If main cast is brilliant, the supporting cast is just as phenomenal. It’s 6 years since the series, and people are still discovering it, getting crayzy over it. So much so that Hu Ge posted a happy 6th anniversary msg on weibo! It already has a sequel NiF 2 (haven’t watched yet), and its triquel was announced recently (I read about that on 15th Oct 2021) slated for 2024.

Even though I wanted to watch it to get my ZZH fills, it didn’t matter that he was in it for a small bit. I have already drowned in it. I have cried, sobbed, laughed, had my heart racing, felt such a dejection on Lin Shu’s behalf, felt utter vindication of him, and finally had my heart ripped out. I know an obsession as they have been long time friends. And this is An Obsession™.

Han Yunxi (Ju Jingyi), a daughter of an Imperial doctor is married off to oh-so-stoic-but-oh-so-gorgeous Prince Qin, Long Feiye (ZZH). It’s a marriage both don’t want but are saddled with now. Yunxi, who’s a potions genius, gets embroiled in all kinds of political intrigue due to her association with Prince Qin. Both start respecting each other and fall in love. Although path of love isn’t easy as there’s another suitor who’s trying to win over Yunxi. In terms of tags:

Highly recced 😍 in spite of the fact that I thought the romance angle of the series was bleh (cause I don’t care about love triangle). But the last vertex is Mi Re (Merxat) who’s just too good looking. And uh... gives off vibes of both WWX and WKX in the beginning episodes?

2. Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion (2020) (40 episodes + 3 spin-off episodes)

Unofficial sequel of LoYX due to its BE. It ACTUALLY mentions the story of Yunxi in this series, like, Yunxi is canon in this verse 😂 People couldn’t get enough of ZZH+Ju Jingyi, so have another cake!

Fu Rong (again Ju Jingyi) accidentally crosses paths with Prince Su, Xu Jin (ZZH), and keeps crossing them again and again. Well, there’s love and then marriage and simultaneously a whole lot of other things happen. Yet again, there’s a love triangle 🙄 which is fairly stupid. In fact, the entire plotline felt all over the place. Also, the cast from LoYX is recycled, so you see same actors (which ok since they’re good.) Some got better deal in this. Absolute must mention are Wang Youshuo who plays the character of Wu Baiqi, an eventual lieutenant under  Prince Su.  He is the love interest of Fu Rong’s older sister Fu Xuan played by frankly unbelievably beautiful Xu Jiaqi (who also has a vital role in LoYX). More than the primary romance of Fu Rong and Prince Su, I loved this secondary one! Wang Youshuo was fantastic! Also, Rong household gave me a strong vibe of Bennet household.

Tbh, if you watch LoYX twice instead of this one, no big loss, but consider this: ZZH smiles and laughs a lot more in this 🥺🥺 And well, his acting is amazing as usual. Isn’t that enough 🥺🥺 Although, given how popular it got, you may like it more than I did. And it actually is very likeable if you don’t expect the plot to hold too tightly! I never felt like I should give up on it.

[SVSSS + AO3 tags] - the idea for this one came from a chat with the pals, where the question was asked “so is SVSSS technically non-canon?” 🤣 Had so much fun picking out tags and selecting scenes to gif. 

[Wangxian in Yunmeng Jiang purple] - I really enjoy doing photomanips, and this one is probably my favorite so far.  

[Lans + their reaction to Su She] - no one side-eyes quite like Gusu Lan, and I was chuckling almost non-stop while making these gifs lol

[CQL Lan Wangji with his donghua look] - another photomanip. Doing these are always a fun challenge. I think it’s kind of like solving a puzzle? Makes the brain go brr 😁

Kinda personal recap...Cup of China 2020 SP

Yes I know I haven't done the recap FS from SkAm, but tbh besides the lovely ice dance teams and Skimeca-Knierem crowning their first "international" appearance with a win, there wasn't much that impressed me...more like extremely surprised to see two big errors by Nathan..it wasn't worth doing a post about it😅

So not gonna lie, this is Chinese Nationals actually, it's scored like Chinese Nats and it is only Chinese skaters, it's not their fault, I just say it...

Men SP

Yudong Chen was fun to watch. Yes jumps are not competitive internationally but he radiated fun to compete like no one else.

Han Yan - that huge amazing 3A, one of the absolute best 3As ever for men! I love the program, I love Han Yan's skating, his jumps are beautiful 😍...yet c'mon how many seasons do you want to keep this SP? I know he made a pause, a comeback, didn't perform it often still...just asking 😅

Boyang Jin - the program could be a good fit. Atm I think it just lacks polish and is a bit chaotic, movements are wild...that aside the 4Lz is huge - the best 4Lz has Boyang - fight me - (still I would like to see a transition into the jump, not "I use the whole rink for speed to jump" !)

Ok it's Nationals like, so the scoring being off is not a surprise and don't get me wrong Boyang deserves a huge lead, just those same - even slightly higher - PCS than Han Yan irk me...just c'mon transition wise, skating skill wise Han Yan is much ahead...(not discrediting the efforts and improvements Boyang made over the years, just that's not it. Let's say if Boyang deserves 44,9 I would go with a 49 PCS for Han Yan.)

Pairs SP

What a lovely program by Cheng Peng/Yang Jin! We ignore the side by side jumps...😅 the rest was beautiful and of tremendous quality.

So sad Sui/Han had to withdraw, I was really looking forward to see them. They were missed! 😭

The rest of the Chinese pairs field has a lot to improve...

Ladies SP

Tbh I only watched Hongyi Chen. The only really competitive Chinese lady...she is lovely to watch 😊

Ice Dance Short Dance

It has been a delight to watch the ice dance teams. China has drastically improved in this regard. All the couples are fun to watch! 🥰

And anyone skating to Disney - Mary Poppins - gets a special place in my heart. What a suiting choreography for the music.

Shiyue Wang/ Xinyu Liu and their Chaplin program is such a fun program.

I think ice dance is the most innovative and fun discipline at the moment. All the teams no matter what country, no matter what level they have are so passionate about their performance. This is what I would love to see more in other disciplines as well.

All in all I am just glad that at least some skating is happening and in CoC I have a good feeling they take the right precautions. May the next Cup of China be an international competition! Wish us all luck for a normal GP next season 🙏!

book 1 tgcf thoughts (as someone who hasn’t read danmei before!)

- im still kinda learning my way thru the terms of the genre but surprisingly i find most of them intuitive and easy to understand! the footnotes help a lot

- i absolutely did not expect this book to be so funny 😭 and the humor translates pretty well even across diff languages! my favorite part is probably the ju wang joke like the set up is so elaborate it just sends me HWBBEBDBF.

- this isn’t a negative take, but im still trying to wrap my head around how time scales in the book?? like duh theyre gods but idk 800 years feels sooo long and its my first time reading a book where the protag and main cast actually are around for that long of a timespan.

- the comedic timing is honestly incredible 😭 the way heavy events r broken up by funny chaotic scenes is well spaced out and it’s a good breather from everything

- xie lian is a really interesting (and funny) narrator!!! im so invested in him as a protagonist and their backstory. i think it’s an interesting choice for this specific part of his life to be how we’re introduced to him, and i somehow feel like i still dont know him at all despite him being the Literal Narrator. very good writing! we also know now that he can be a pretty unreliable narrator based on gilded banquet, so excited to see how that affects the books that focus on his backstory.

- to add, part of why xl is so interesting is because he is somehow involved with every single damn thing so far. banyue arc? yeah he gave some food to some kids. qi rong? thats his COUSIN. gilded banquet? he was somehow involved! crimson rain sought flower? idk what their history is but it’s there! he somehow has personal stakes in every arc.

- hua cheng [sobs]. i get the hype now about mxtx love interests because that is how you Write one! it’s kinda hilarious how xl describes him because he somehow is able to identify every nuance to hc but his romantic feelings for him 😭 which… understandable! i also would not assume a literal ghost king would be in love with him but my god is he obvious about it!!!

- hua cheng deserves a 2nd bullet point! the way he acts around xl, it’s giving quiet but unwavering devotion and i am so curious! to know why he’s like this!! the moments that stand out to me r the ones where he really lets his rage take over, because most of the time… xl is on the receiving end of the transgression. when hc nearly loses his shit @ qr for the statue… wow wow wow
