"Begin."
At the indication of Splinter's voice, you tightened your hand on the wooden sword, charging at Leo. He braced, taking the first hit. His ability to block just made you fight more. Donnie, Mikey and Raph were at the side watching. When you asked to be trained the same way they were, Splinter was a bit skeptical.
They were mutants, there was a certain amount of training he knew they could handle. They were always exceeding his expectations with their progress. But you were a little more fragile. At the beginning you could barely even hold a sword correctly.
Despite that he could see your determination. Where you lacked in skill, you made up for it with hard work. Now you were as equipped for battle as anyone of his boys. He was so proud at how much you improved over the months. From the side it must have looked like Leo wasn't putting much effort, but Splinter knew it was taking some energy to avoid getting hit. He was mostly blocking. You were more adept in offense, whereas Leo was defense. It's what made the both of you great partners.
You swung and dodged each and every attack he delivered. Leo smirked when you did a flip to avoid a very close blow he struck, spinning around you even managed to knock the stick right out of his arms, placing your own at his neck. He froze with his hands raised.
"Well done (Y/N). '' You grinned, dropping your weapon and jumping around as you high fived Mikey. "Heck yeah! Who beat Leo, I beat Leo! I said who beat Leo!"
"You beat Leo!" Mikey joined in your little singing fest and Leo just chuckled, bending to pick up both sticks.
"Don't go getting a big head, I was going easy on you."
You scoffed. "Like if you were struggling to keep up Leo-sensei~" you teased. He stammered at your words, shuffling back and almost dropping the sticks in his hands. You giggled. You had no idea why but whenever you called him Sensei he always got embarrassed.
"You've gotten quite good at this. I must say your dedication is quite inspiring. " You bowed. "Thank you Master Splinter. I'm forever grateful." They were all aware of your need for self defense. You were one of the more sadder cases they dealt with. Some men had gang up on you while you were walking from your late night job. When they found you, you were battered and bruised. You never thought you would ever recover.
Leo and the others found the men responsible and gave them a severe beating of course. After thanking them, you decided you were done being a victim. You were going to fight back. So you trained hard for months. You never had to worry about being scared again, you even opened your own little dojo. Teaching self defense to other victims, and even little kids. That horrible night provided something wonderful. You had purpose, and a great set of new friends.
"So Leo let's talk business. " Mikey's words made you smile, a little confused on what he was referring too. Splinter, already used to his son's antics left quietly. "What are you guys talking about?" you said moving to grab a towel and your bottle water. You draped the cloth around your neck, sipping from your bottle. Leo was looking a bit nervous now. "Ya can't back out." Raph urged.
"Yeah you promised." Donnie stated. They all seem to know but you. You pulled back the bottle, raising a brow.
"Come on don't leave me out of the loop. I wanna know?" When Leo walked over to you, your head titled. He cleared his throat.
"(Y/N), would you like to go on a date with me?"
You blushed, not sure if you were hearing right.
"E-Excuse me?"
Leo scratched his neck, flustered. "The guys they made me promise that if you won I'd finally own up and..ask you out.." he mumbled the last part. From the back you could see the culprits sneaking out. Mikey was showing you a thumbs up mouthing a "I got you girl."
You couldn't believe it. He was asking you out. Like actually doing it. Yes, it was because of a dare, but from what he said it was more a dare of courage, because apparently he'd been wanting to do it for a while.
"Listen, they're gone. I can just tell them you said yes. You don't actually have to go out with me."
"I'd love to go on a date with you Leonardo." he paused, blinking. "Are you sure?" Leo wasn't the self conscious type. It wasn't because he thought he didn't have a chance, or even because he was a mutant. He knew the type of person you were, and he was positive that things like that weren't what you cared about. His main concern was your healing process. He still remembered that day when they found you.
He hadn't even known you back then, yet he wanted to protect you from everything. The pain and hurt you would experience as you got through your trauma. That was the main reason he kept visiting. It's how the both of you officially met. He was always checking up on you in the hospital. He kept telling himself it was crazy. You were a complete stranger. But he couldn't stop. Slowly but surely you started to notice things, then you noticed him. Now, those days seemed so far away. From strangers, to friends. Maybe now something more?
He took in the way you shifted on your feet, that adorable little shuffle whenever you were caught off guard. Then there was the little hair gesture. You would twist and twirl a lock of your hair when you got nervous.
"I-I mean we kind of have to now you know. You did make a deal. And a ninja's word is solid." It's cute, the way you were trying to justify it all. Leo couldn't stop the smile on his face.
"You're right, I wouldn't be much of a leader if I couldn't stay true to my word."
"Mhmm." he could see the way your eyes light up in agreement.
"So is tomorrow night at nine okay for you, we'll be patrolling at seven."
"It's great Leo." Excited, you reach down to grab your duffle bag, slinging it over your shoulder.
"I can't wait!" you weren't even trying to hide your happiness. You turned practically skipping out of the room. Raph and the others peeked from behind the wall.
"See, that wasn't so hard now was it." Mikey spoke. Leo's eyes were still watching in the direction you left.
"Leo, earth to Leo!" Mikey was waving his hand in front of him with no response.
"Guys I think we killed him!"
Raph just smacked Leo at the back of his head. He stumbled, looking back with a pissed expression.
"See, he aint dead." They all knew Raph would look for any opportunity to hit Leo.
~~~~
You were running from room to room. Cleaning, fluffing, just pretty much checking it all over to make sure it was spotless.
After you were done, you searched for a dress. Something that said cute, but not too much. Not trying too hard, just trying a little sort of feel. Leo would get here at nine, so you still had time. You rushed into the shower. All you needed was a nice shower and some decent make up application after. You left your apartment window open just in case you lost track of time. You didn't want him waiting outside long.
You weren't in the shower for too long. After a relaxing ten minutes, you dried yourself off and looked for your sexiest pair of underwear. "Just in case." you assured yourself. Sifting through your closet you found a little blue spaghetti dress.
"Perfect!" Slipping it on, you moved to your bedroom to apply makeup. It wasn't much, just some mascara and a little touch of lip gloss. Since you weren't exactly going out. You settled for a pair of flats. Smoothing out the dress,you jumped when you heard the doorbell ring. " Crap! Pizza right." taking some cash from your purse you went for the door. Opening it, the delivery man handed you the two boxes. You took it, giving him the money. "Thank you." you said politely, closing the door as he left.
Placing the pizza on the table in your living room, you sat on the couch, waiting. It was a bit nerve wrecking. The little tap on your window made you stand, and you brushed your hair over your shoulder heading for the kitchen. Leo was on the fire escape, and when he saw you he slipped inside, closing the window behind him. You smiled, even though you left it open he still knocked.
"Hey. " you greeted. He raised his head to do the same, but stopped when he took in your attire.
"(Y/N)...you look beautiful." He was so used to seeing you in yoga pants and t-shirts.
"Thank you. "
"Mission success!" Seems like the dress did its job. "Come on you must be starving after your patrol let's eat." Leo followed you to the living room, his eyes brightening when his nostrils caught the scent of pizza. You couldn't stop your giggles when he was right beside you in seconds. You opened the box, taking a plate and giving him two slices.
He took it gratefully, taking a seat on the couch. You did the same when you got your own slice. "So how was patrol, catch any bad guys?" you bit into the slice and Leo nods, swallowing his piece. "It was fine, Mikey got a little excited when we took down some guys that were trying to rob a convenience. I felt bad. It was just a couple of kids. "
"Aww, did you guys turn them in." He shakes his head. "We didn't. Raph scared the crap outta them. I don't think they'll be robbing anymore stores in the future. " you laugh at that. "I could only imagine, poor kids. "
Leo has already finished his pizza, and as the night progresses the both of you fall into easy conversation. You fill him in on how your business is going. Your favorite part of the day was probably your job. He knew that for certain. He's still a bit taken by you. Maybe it's the cute dress, or the way he feels like he can tell you just about anything. Possibly the way your lips are still glimmering with gloss, despite the slices of pizza you've already eaten. He can't pull his gaze away.
"Leo?"
He's apparently drifted off. "Yes, sorry about that, what did you say?"
"Do you want another drink?" you ask standing and heading for the fridge. He's only had one sprite, and you're feeling a bit thirsty, so you wonder if maybe he is too. "Oh, no I'm okay thanks." So you're going to get yourself a glass of water. Sipping the drink, you let out a soft sigh. The night was really going better than you expected. At the beginning you thought it would be a bit awkward. It wasn't a secret you found Leo attractive. In every sense of the word. His personality, dedication, damn even his body was breathtaking to you. It was easy for you to communicate when it was all the boys, but with just the both of you it was different. And you were glad you could still talk with him casually.
When you walked back into the living room you almost crashed into him. He grabbed you by the shoulders apologizing. "(Y/N), I'm sorry I have to go. Donnie caught some interference on one of the cameras. " you nod in understanding. "That's okay Leo." you were grateful for the time you did get to spend with him. You knew there was probably someone who needed him more than you right now. His hands were still holding you gently.
"I had a really good time Leo.." He smiles.
"I did too." For a moment you don't know what to do. The both of you just stand there, looking at each other. His eyes are possibly the bluest you've ever seen. You could get lost in them forever. "(Y/N)...is it okay if I.." his eyes move to your lips for a split second. You swallow.
"Yeah.." you breathe. His hands are still resting gently on your shoulders. He leans down to meet your lips and you're a bit nervous. It's been so long since you've been on a date, even longer since you've kissed someone. But this isn't just anyone, it's Leo.
"Leo.."
His lips meet your own, and all you could think is why the hell did it take you this long. Your arm reaches up a bit hesitant, and you shift, taking a step forward to lean into him. Leo's hands have changed position. One on your waist, the other on the small of your back. He urges you in, closer to him, and you deepen the kiss. His arms have now encased your body, and you don't ever want to pull away. Not for anything.
The kisses are slow, and sensual. He wants to taste all he can, and when your tongue slips pass begging for entrance. He inhales, giving in. When his mouth opens and your tongues touch, you can feel the way your pulse gives an appreciative thump. Leo moans, and it's music to your ears. You've never heard such a sound leave him. It's amazing what that simple thing does to your body. You're on your toes, refusing to part. You have to though. You're beginning to run out of oxygen. Pulling back slowly, your eyes are still closed, and you lick your lips. You can still taste him. When you open your eyes, he's staring at you. His pupils are dilated, and you almost want to lean back in and completely ravish him. But he has to go. More pressing matters.
"You...should probably get going." you pant out. Leo needs to compose himself. How can he even think of fighting now when you've clouded his mind with the feel of your lips. He somehow manages to release you with a soft smile. "I should." he agrees. He gives your lips one last peck, and you grin.
"Dinner is on me next time."
"Sure Leo." You can't wait for your next date, because if it's half as good as this one, then you might as well just marry Leo right now.
"See you later Leo."
"Bye (Y/N).'' He's heading for the kitchen, but almost trips because he doesn't want to look away. You giggle when he catches himself, making a very ungraceful exit.
"It was definitely the dress."
You have absolutely no doubt.
“El, come onnnnn. Lighten up, Leo and I have moved past everything, its time you did too.” Aria whines, while grabbing onto Leos arm pulling herself closer to him. Ellie eyes The duo curiously. “Ellie, I know I put you in a terrible position after, well, everything in Europe, but I genuinely hope we can move forward.” Leo extends his hand turning on his charm. “Ok fine,! But if you hurt her again I will hunt you down and chop off your dick myself. ” Ellie threatened as she shook his hand.The waitress pulls up two more chairs and takes Aria and Leos order. “Ill have 6 honey barbecue boneless and a Pepsi.” Aria ordered. “What are your hottest wings? Leo questioned the waitress. ” homicide,they are very hot. “ she informed him. "Ill have those and a Heineken please.” Aria eyes Leo, you sure you can handle those Rhys? They are super hot.“ Leo shoots her a cocky grin "I think ill be able to handle them.”
The group engages in idle chit chat about whats been going on in each others lives the past few months before the waitress comes back with their food. Everyone eyes fall on Leo as he picks up his first wing. He rips off a hunk of chicken and chews not even breaking a sweat. He finishes the first with no problem. “They have a kick, but I have had hotter.” He takes a sip of his beer. Aria giggles “that’s why your super man.”
 They finish their food and rob and Liz take off. “Hey, lets go visit Daniel.” Aria begged. She had not seen him since she left and she was wondering how he and Gary were doing with the wedding plans. “You know I hate that place, but Daniel has a heavy hand, fuck it lets go.” Ellie agrees as they jump up. . Leo pulls Aria closer “so where exactly are we going?” He asked. “A bar.. the one I worked at before I left for Cordonia.” They pull into the parking lot of the bar and wait a few minutes for Jay and Ellie to get there. Jay had a street bike as well, but wasn’t as skilled a driver as Leo was. They finally pull in. “Dude that’s a sweet bike.” Jay admired which turned into a full on conversation between Jay and Leo about bikes and the motocross circuit  “If you two ladies want to sit out here and gab all night, Ellie and I are going to go get a drink.” Aria hollered motioning between the two. Leo grinned as he slid up to her side putting his arm around her waist. “My apologies beautiful, shall we.” He motioned with his other hand to lead the way.
They walk in and Daniel looks up from the counter. “Well look at what they cat dragged in, come here.” He ran up to give her a hug. “Hey everyone Aria’s in the house.” He shouted, the bar erupted with cheers. Many of her regulars she served were there. “Something of a celebrity here I see.” Leo leaned in close kissing her cheek. Aria smiled “This is home, this was my life. I spent almost every night with many of them.” She planted a kiss on his lips. “Hey Dan, Ronnie in?” She asked. “Nope.” Daniel informed her as he poured a beer. “Good, let me behind that bar, hey El Alabama slammer?.” She questioned her friend. “Hell yeah! Im gonna go grab a booth.” Ellie nods her head and walks off  Aria saunters behind the bar.
 Leo pulls up a chair. He watches her grab bottles of liquor pouring them skillfully into each glass. “So spill. Who’s the hottie?” Daniel gushed glancing over in Leos direction. “Easy there tiger, aren’t you engaged.” Aria chuckled. “Yeah, but you gotta appreciate a good looking guy, and that one is FINE.” Daniel fanned himself with his hand. “That’s Leo, my ex. And current, im not even sure what we are. I guess Friends with benefits? She knew that it was more then just sex between them but could not find the right words. . “What happened to Liam, that was his name right, the prince.” Daniel eyed her curiously. She had wrote him a few emails but had not updated since Liam chose Madeline. He is marrying an uber cunt. Were figuring things out. Oh Leo is his brother.” She rushes her words, regretting them as soon as they came out. Daniel gives her a stern look. “So let me get this right, Liam is a prince, which makes Leo a prince too. You used to date Leo, and then almost married his brother, and you’re here with him now?”  Daniel shakes his head “Jesus Ari what have you gotten yourself into?” “Correction Liam is a king, Leo is the former crown prince but abdicate,  hes still a prince by birth right. And yes, im currently fucking him. Wanna know anything else Dan?” Aria snaps. Daniel puts his hands up in defeat as Aria grabs the drinks she made,handing Leo his as they make their way to the booth. “Were gonna need a few applebombs Dan, can you bring em out in a few?” She shouts over her shoulder.
Ellie gulps her drink down fast “man I missed how good you make them.” She said sliding her empty cup across the table. “You know how strong I make them, you may wanna pace yourself or you’ll fall off the back of Jays bike.” Aria giggles. “What no shots?” Ellie pouts. “What am I new? I already told Daniel.: She slouched back in her chair. After a few drinks Ellie grabs Arias hand and they make their way to the dance floor. Leaving Leo to chat with Jay. He liked Jay, he was a decent guy and knew a lot about motorcycles and racing. He even knew of Leo from the racing circuit. Leo sipped his beer as he watched her move around the dance floor with her best friend. She was smiling, laughing and singing along with the words to every song that came on. A familiar feeling came over him, it was the exact way he felt all those years ago, watching her be carefree and having fun. He loved her, he never stopped loving her. He pushed it down, even marrying Katie he wished it was her. When danced with her at the Masquerade ball in Cordonia he felt it and he didn’t know it was her, not until he had the PI find out who she was. He loved her, of that he was always sure, but this feeling was more he was head over heels for her. He needed to tell her and soon.
They came back to the table, Ellie was already pretty drunk, she took a sip of Arias Malibu bay breeze “so Leo, you were married huh.” Ellie says with a bit of sarcasm. “I was, it did not work out.” Leo takes a swig of his beer, avoiding eye contact. “Did you have any kids?” She questioned. “No, thankfully Katie and I did not. I only ever thought of myself having children with one person.” His eyes flashed to Aria, her blush hidden with the already redness of her hot face. Ellie picking up on his subtle hint snorted. “That’s to bad, you could ha-” “Ellie, enough.” Aria warned, her voice dropped low and serious. Leo looked between both women, something Ellie mentioned, Aria did not want her to finish. Just then Jay comes up pulling Leo away “Hey some guys I know are fans they wanna meet you, come on.”
As soon as Leo was gone Aria whipped around her eyes never leaving Ellie’s face “what the hell do you think you’re doing bringing that up?” Arias tone stern, her stare was cold, a sad trait she picked up from her time in the courtly life. “Damn, look at you. I guess being around royalty has made you grow some balls.” Ellie spit back. “You know that is something I never want to think about, why would you say that in front of him?” Aria seethed. “Jeeze, sorry I wasn’t thinking. You know you really should tell him. One day, he has the right to know.” Ellie got up to get a refill leaving Aria alone to ponder Ellie’s words. She knew she should tell him, it had been weighing on her for 5 years, if she was going to move forward with either him or Liam she needed to Cleanse herself of old baggage. She would tell him just not here.
 Leo, Ellie and Jay made their way back to the table. The mood started to lighten and the drinks kept coming. They settled into a nice groove, laughing and sharing stories. Aria rested her hand on Leo’s thigh, inching it closer every few minutes. A sly grin forms on his face. She moves her hand Dangerously close to the crotch of his pants, she can feel him grow against his jeans. He turns and drops his voice “what are you doing Beautiful?” “I have no idea what you are talking about handsome. ” she feigned innocence. “Ok, if that’s how you wanna play it.” He dips his hand under the table making his way in between Arias legs, he ran his fingers across her sex, she could feel the heat start to pool. She held back a moan as he continued to rub between her legs. She was so sure she had a wet spot by now. They were both so caught up in each other they didn’t notice Jay and Ellie leave the booth. Not wanting to have an orgasm right there she moved her hand away from his crotch above the table to grab her drink. She needed to cool down after that. He keeps his hand on her thigh his body facing her, she raises her glass taking a long sip from the straw. A familar song plays, she tilts her head back “ohh I love this song.” She sings along
Same streets, same party Drowning their problems in Bacardi Same people still talking Oh, I’m so over it, I’m sorry Baby, you and me could leave right now Ditch all your friends, the guy you came with Get to know you where it ain’t so loud Just you and me alone on some old moonlit road But the two of us could disappear Just say the word and get out of here Baby, you and me could leave right now
He stares at her wide eyed and stunned. “You have a Beautiful voice love, how did I not know you could sing?” “hmm I guess its just not something that most people know.” She sips her drink humming the rest of the words to herself. “Dance wit me Leo.” Aria jumps up holding her hand out, He takes it and they head to the dance floor. He pulls her close as their bodies sway to the music.Leo sings along with the chorus.
Baby, you and me could leave right now Ditch all your friends, the guy you came with Get to know you where it ain’t so loud Just you and me alone on some old moonlit road But the two of us could disappear Just say the word and get out of here Baby, you and me could leave right now Meet me out back if you like how that sounds
His voice smooth and sexy, she felt weak in the knees. She didn’t know he could sing. My god another to love about him. She was a goner, if she had any walls left they were completely gone now. She grabbed his hand and they made their way out the door to his bike. Leo twirls her around grabbing her by the small of her back, his other hand brushing her hair behind her ear. His lips crashed down on hers, their lips part and their tongues dance together, fighting for dominance. He pulls back reluctantly, leaving her breathless and light headed. “Come on, I want to show you something.” He hands her a helmet and they drove off into the city that never sleeps.
Panic starts to rise in my chest. Why the hell am I on boat? Where in the hell am I? I can’t breathe. Strong winds hurtle my hair, slapping me in the face. Water enters the ship and the terror from my impending doom engulfs me. Waves upon waves crash against my craft. I hang on for dear life against the railing, but to no avail.  I am thrown off violently crashing into the merciless ocean. I swim to the top for air only to be met by another violent wave submerging me underwater. I rise to the surface once more, locating my raft in the darkness. I catch a glimpse of the sail and I put all my energy into my strokes. The current is so strong. I’m almost there. The boat is within arm’s length. I’m almost there. I was about to grab hold when the current sweeps me underneath pulling me into its ruthless clutches. No, please, no. I scream with all the energy and breath I had left. I scream my pain and anguish. I am swept undersea, letting go of the tiny ember of hope I had held onto, I submit into my despair with open arms.
She jolts awake, breathing hard. Her head pounded, and she can feel the intense throbbing pain behind her eyes. She’s been in Hana and Maxwell’s apartment plenty of times that she knew where they kept their pain meds in their kitchen. She notices a note on the kitchen table with her name on it. She recognizes Hana’s elegant handwriting immediately. Hey Cath, Maxwell has headed into class and I left for work, but I made you some breakfast before leaving. You can find it in the fridge. You can also borrow some of my clothes just in case you want to take a shower and get out of your nasty ones. I’ll talk to you later. Love, Hana. Responsible to a fault, that girl, this is a trait of hers that she is grateful for. She took advantage of her offer and hopped in the shower. She took a long shower, staying under the stream water so long that her fingertips turned prune-y. She had hoped that the hot water would cleanse away all memory of the previous night. It didn’t.
She stepped into living room after getting dressed and checked the clock in the living room. It read 9:23am. He should be in class by now. She felt relieved knowing that she won’t have to face him…yet. I’m not ready. I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to face him. She steps into the lively streets of New York City, slowly treading the path back to her apartment. She arrives at the flat she shared with Liam. The internal storm of misery and torment finally subside, leaving nothing but a scar tissue where her heart used to be in its carnage. She is numb, and she is actually thankful for that.
She makes her way to her room, passing Liam’s on the way. He left his door open. His usually very neat, making his bed every day before he left. Today was the exception, his room was a mess. Blankets and pillows strewn about as if he had a restless night. His uniform thrown on the floor messily, as if he woke up late. Her best friend was never the one to leave things disorganized. I wonder if he slept alright. Probably not. He found out his girlfriend was cheating on him, then I had to go and be a drama queen and tell him how I felt. Worst anniversary ever. Fucking whiskey! I should really learn to not mix anger with a bottle of Jack Daniels. She shakes her head to put a halt on her train of thoughts as she continues to make her way to her room.
She didn’t have classes today, so she had a few hours to herself before she had to get ready for a long shift. She decided to pour herself into her homework and finishing the papers for her finals to distract herself from Liam. It’s so difficult to do when she’s surrounded with pictures and memories of him. Every where she looks, there he is. He’s even on her nightstand. It was a picture of the 15-year-old version of them. She grabs the picture and gazes at it. She couldn’t stop herself from flashing back to that memory.
It was the first birthday she was celebrating after the death of her parents. Catheryne was two days younger than Liam, so it became a tradition to celebrate their birthdays together. For once in her life, she was sad that their birthdays were during the summer break. At least if she was in school she could be distracted with work, but there was no escape. She dreaded this day. She missed them. She missed their mini traditions; her mom was a great baker and always made her a cake, her dad would sing to his own version of the Happy Birthday Song with his guitar.
She had asked the Rhys’ to not throw a celebration for her birthday. For this birthday, all she wanted was some time alone. No friends to entertain, no fake smiles, no pity looks from everyone. “Liam, you can still throw yourself a birthday party. Don’t let me sour your special day.” She felt awful for ruining their tradition, but she just couldn’t do it this year. “Ryne, you are not souring anything. You’re my best friend and I can’t imagine not celebrating our birthdays together. So, whatever you wanna do, we will do.” She looked at him with grateful eyes.
She will never forget that birthday. She was awakened by the sounds of a strumming guitar. Liam walked into her room singing happy birthday. He didn’t have her father’s angelic voice, but it sufficed. What in the world is he doing? He finishes the song as she sits up on her bed. “Happy Birthday, Ryne.” Upon hearing her nickname, her eyes welled up. There were only two people in the world who called her by her nickname, her father and Liam. She misses her dad.
“Liam…” she was left with absolutely no words. “Is…Is this why you asked for my dad’s guitar two weeks ago?” asking him with her early morning voice. “Yeah, sorry I lied about my reason. I really wanted to surprise you. You don’t wanna know how many YouTube videos I had to watch to learn this simple song,” He says, sheepishly. She stared at him, awestruck at the effort he has put into this. “Oh, wait here, I have to get the second part to the surprise.” He ducks out of the room. There was a second part? How much work did he put into this? Her trance was interrupted when he walked in with a birthday cake in his hands. It was chocolate, just like her favorite, and it was topped with 15 lit candles. It didn’t look store bought so she asked, “Liam, did you make this?” She inquired her friend. “My mom guided me through it, but it was mostly me. Well then, make a wish.” She closed her eyes and thought of a wish, I wish to never forget this day or this feeling, and with that in mind she sends it to the universe with a blow of her candles.
“Liam, thank you, seriously, this means more to me than you could possibly know.” He grabbed her hands with his and replied, “You’re very welcome, Ryne, but the day is only getting started. Now, go get a shower and get dressed. I’ll be down by the beach when you’re done.” He squeezed her hand as he stands up to leave.
She met him down by their safe haven. She was so thankful that their little beach, the small place where she found peace, wasn’t a tourist spot. They had the freedom to run around, their parents never had to worry about them disappearing for hours when they go off on their explorations. She stood there admiring his tall physique, his blonde hair being ruffled by the summer breeze. She thinks to herself, He looks like a prince from a book when he stands there like that. I think if he desired it, he could be a Disney prince, he definitely met all the criteria. He had the biggest heart out of everyone I know. And not to mention he was incredibly handsome! She feels a stirring in her heart, something she’s never felt before, but she didn’t dwell on it. She walked up beside him and said, “So, what now?” He jumped when he heard her; he was so concentrated on the horizon that he didn’t register her presence at all. “Well, I have one more surprise for you, but we’re gonna have to travel there.” His eyes twinkled, just like it always did whenever they were about to embark on an adventure. “Liam, seriously you’ve done enough for today.” “I am not taking a no for an answer, Ryne, now follow me.”
They marched back up to the house. He instructed her to wait out front while he grabbed something. A few minutes later, he shows up with a bicycle in tow. “Is that Leo’s bike? Why is there a basket attached to it?” He holds up a picnic basket to answer her question. “Uhhh, why do we need to go somewhere to have a picnic when there’s a perfectly undisturbed beach right here where we can do the same thing?” He heartily laughs at her and replies, “Ryne, would you just trust me for once in your life and get in the back.” She shakes her head and hops on the bicycle’s pegs. Demanding, as always, somethings never change.
She wrapped her arms around him as he pedaled their way to an unknown location. After 6 miles, they finally get there. It was the memorial where her parents are buried. They weave their way to their tombstones. Liam sets up the picnic while Catheryne cleaned her parents stone and its surroundings, clearing it of twigs and leaves.
“Hi, Mom, Dad. It’s me, Catheryne,” she felt a little silly talking out loud, but she needed to be close to them. “It’s my birthday today. Liam is here with me. I just want to thank you for bringing me into this world. You’re the best parents a child can ask for. I miss you every day.” She allowed a tear to fall from her eyes as she knelt before her parents. Liam’s hand finds its way to rest on her shoulder. How can this simple gesture bring so much comfort? It’s as if his hand held her, preventing her from being blown away by the winds of her despair.
They sat on the picnic blanket, laughing and talking the day away. This isn’t how she imagined this day would go. She thought she would spend the whole day lying in bed, surrounded by her depression from the loss of her parents, but here she was with the only family she had left. Liam had given her the best birthday gift, and she couldn’t be more grateful for her best friend and his big heart.
They watched the sun set in the horizon. She basked in the last glimpse of the sunlight until it disappeared, signaling that the time has come to return home. He looked at her as she stood there, eyes closed, facing towards the sunset. She looks content and happy. I guess I did my part well. I’m glad to have given her this day. She deserves so much happiness after all that had happened with her family this year. He smiled with satisfaction. He hated to break that surreal moment, but he announced, “Hey, we should head back. It’s gonna get dark soon.” She opened her eyes, acknowledging him and nodding her reply. “Liam, thank you so much for this day. I…It…I’ll never forget it.” She felt embarrassed that she couldn’t find the right words that she was feeling. She admired him in the orange rays of the sunset. He looks like a dream in this lighting. The flutter in her heart and stomach came back. What is that? Stop being an idiot, Catheryne. Liam is probably looking at you like you’re stupid for looking at him with goofy eyes. Her best friend replied by giving her the softest kiss on her cheek. He lingered there for a moment. He pulled away, saying “It makes me happy to see you happy, Ryne, happy birthday.” With that, he walked away to get his bike leaving her all alone to her emotions. The flutter in her heart became an intense warm sensation emanating from her heart. The sudden realization of what her feelings had hit her like a bullet train, quick and sudden. I am in love with my best friend. I am in love with Liam Rhys.
Her loud alarm pulled her back to her reality. It was time to get ready for work. She places the picture back on her nightstand, facing down. She couldn’t bare to look at it anymore. Her birthday wish from that memory, was just that, a wish. Life clearly loved to remind her of her aching heart. She gets up from her bed to her vanity and put on her everyday make-up. She smiles at the mirror, hoping to cheer herself up, but even with effort her smile never reached her eyes. She sighs in defeat.
She grabs her shoulder bag and keys from the hook by her door and heads for work. She loves walking in the midst of the hustle and bustle of New York City. It is where she truly feels like she can disappear.
The mediocre dive bar she works at come into view. Before she entered, she inhales a deep breath steeling herself for the long night ahead. You can do this, Catheryne. Just take it one foot at a time. You can make it through this. She releases her breath and trudges forward, head hanging low. She walks back to the locker area, shoving her items in her locker. She lazily puts on her disgusting apron and puts her hair up in a bun. “Catheryne, stop standing there and gawking like an idiot and get out there!” Her asshole of a manager, Declan, barked at her. She pinches the bridge of her nose and closes her eyes as she uses her hand to lean forward against the lockers. You can do this. You can do this. Even as she repeats it in her mind, her resolve is slowly dissipating.
As if she didn’t have enough on her plate at that moment, life decides to pile on to her mess. “Hey, Ryne.” Hearing his voice made all the blood rush into her face. She balls her fist on her side, remembering the night before and all the anguish he . “I can’t do this with you tonight, Liam.” She whispers through gritted teeth before stepping out into the floor without looking at him. She is already frustrated with her boss. She can’t handle him, too.
She went about the motions of being a waitress. Her feet are screaming with pain from running back and forth to the kitchen and the room, handing and taking orders. Her emotional health is strained from the barrage of harassing customers. It was a busy night. It was a Friday after all. When she would get a break from the flow of customers she had to attend to, she would catch him looking at her from the corner of her eye, concern carved on his chiseled face. She was hanging on by a thread. She didn’t know how long she could keep up the feigned strength she conveyed to the world.
She is making her way back to the kitchen to pick up an order when a loud, rowdy customer stops her in her track. “Hey, doll, why don’t you and your purty self come here and let me tell you somethin,” This is the nature of her job, rude people mixed with alcohol is a concoction for disaster. She turns and makes her way to his table full of raucous men just like him. “Yes?” she replied politely, hiding her anger for his insulting demeanor. “I ain’t never seen someone as beautiful as you. I was wonderin’ if you’d like to come with me to my hotel after your done from here. I think I can blow your mind.” He is clearly drunk off his ass; his slurred country accent makes it difficult to understand him. She was fuming with rage at his insulting comment, but nonetheless she replies with a calm tone, “Thanks for the offer, but I must decline.” She turns to walk away when he slaps her right on the ass.
The tiny thread she held onto finally snapped. She whirls around, letting her anger fuel her. Before she even knew it, she slaps the rude man squarely across the face. Her hand stung from the impact, but it was nothing compared to the fury coursing through her veins. How dare he?! Disgusting, insulting, perverted bastard! The man stands up, hollering at her, “WHAT THE HELL?! I’LL MAKE YOU PAY FOR THAT, YOU BITCH!” His hand recoils behind him, getting ready to take a shot at her
Liam watches her with careful eyes as she goes about this encounter. He has known her a long time, he can read her tells. He can read the anger that was hidden behind her smile and eyes. The way this man is treating her enrages him, but he tries to concentrate back to tending the bar. His work was halted when he sees Catheryne walking back to the man slapping him in the face, she was shaking with anger. What the hell just happened? His instinct to protect her guides him across the bar to where the conflict is unraveling. He steps in front of her, putting himself between them, his arm blocks the blow that he was about to throw at Catheryne. He retaliates by punching him hard on the stomach, and using momentum and rage, he punches the man in the face, knocking him out.
Declan comes out from the kitchen, witnessing the commotion that just happened. “What in the hell is happening? Liam! Catheryne! You insufferable morons! What the hell…” Liam stops him mid-sentence, “You know, Declan,” enunciating the syllables of his name, “you just may be one of the worst goddamned person in the planet. We quit!” He goes to the back to grab his and Catheryne’s belongings. He grabs her hand and pulls her, a little too violently, out of the bar back to their apartment.
When they arrive at their place, she finally speaks up, “What the hell did you do, Liam?” He is making his way to the cabinet where they kept the strong rum. He skips the glass and downs a gulp straight from the bottle. “Liam, what the fuck?! You shouldn’t have done that!” He couldn’t believe what she just said, and he stared at her with incredulous eyes. Is she really angry at me after I just protected her from that god-awful man?
Her body trembles from all the emotions racing within her. What just happened? I’ve never lost my senses like that before. Oh God, what is happening to me? Her feelings for Liam is ruining her. She watches as he sets down the bottle on the counter. She sees his white knuckles gripping the countertop. “What did you want me to do, Catheryne, hmm?” He speaks quietly, his tone almost felt like the calm before the storm. “I don’t know, Liam, but you shouldn’t have interfered. Now, we both have no jobs.” She responded, matching the tone of his voice.
“So, you’re saying I should’ve just let him hit you?! Is that it, Ryne?” his voice gradually rising in volume. “Well, I’m sorry that I couldn’t just stand there and watch him treat you like that. I’m sorry that I couldn’t be a bad friend.” Friend, there is that word again. Such a simple word, but it cuts through me like a double-edged sword. She paces across the room, grabbing the rum and consumes a considerable amount of it. She stomps athwart in their living room. Her panic, rising to the surface. He continues his rant, “I’m sorry that I all I wanted was to protect you!”
“We’re not in high school anymore, Liam, ok,” she snaps at him. “I’m not the weak, little girl you had to protect from her bullies! I can stand on my own two feet!” Her hands flail around her as she speaks, and her tears get the best of her, staining her face.
The storm has arrived as they both explode. “I don’t know what you want me to do, Ryne?! I just want to take the past couple of days and pretend it never happened! Then, we could continue just as the two best friends living in the city of dreams, happy!” He screams at her.
She has taken aback by the timbre of his voice. Not once, in the 16 years, that they have known each other has he treated her this way. Happy, is that what he thought our relationship was? “Happy, really? Liam, have you been really that blind all throughout this years?! I have loved you since we were kids. I fell in love with you when we were 15! Happy, isn’t the word I would use to describe this relationship.” All her frustration and anger poured out of her, she couldn’t keep them in anymore. I am so tired. I am so tired of hurting. She meets his eyes across the room and she let go, “I was miserable, Liam. I am miserable! My heart broke every time I saw you with other girls, wishing I was them, wishing you looked at me like the way you do with them! The anger I would feel towards them for breaking your heart scared me! I don’t know who I am anymore. I lost myself because of you, because of my love for you. I am so tired, Liam. I am tired of hurting. I am tired of crying myself to sleep. Loving you is more painful than when I lost my parents. I don’t know what it is about you. I tried so hard, Liam. I really did. I tried to stop my feelings for you, but clearly it didn’t work.” She laughs bitterly. She was done. She was done waiting for the day he’ll love her, too.
She heads towards the door, leaving to stay at Hana’s for the weekend. He suddenly steps in front of her, blocking the way to the door. She tries to weave her away forward, but his broad physique compared to her petite frame always had her at a disadvantage. “I’m sorry, Ryne! I’m so sorry! How can I make this go away? Tell me, please! How can we go back to the way it was?” He pleads with her. “We can’t.” She simply stated. “No, I refuse to believe that!” He is trying so hard to hang on to his best friend, his confidant. He grabs her arms refusing to let her go. “There must be a way to fix this! There has to be! Tell me how I can fix this! Tell me how I can stop you from hurting.” She wiggles out of his hold, heading out the door. “CATHERYNE, PLEASE!” He is begging her to stay. “Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” She loses what sanity she has left and yells at him, pouring all of herself and her love for him into her words,
“I WANT YOU TO TELL ME YOU LOVE ME, TOO!” She turns around to look at him. She didn’t need to stay to hear his excuse or whatever retort he has planned. She could see the answer written all over his face, and she finally accepted defeat and walked away.
