Last Days of 27
Tuesday started off well. I had just had my first weekend off from work in a long time and was still on a high from being able to finally go hiking. I was interviewed by a woman from my school who will be writing a piece about my volunteer work. The interview forced me to reflect upon my experience volunteering and to put into words how I felt about it, and hearing myself discuss how rewarding it’s been for me reminded me of how much I’ve enjoyed volunteering for the past six weeks. I not only feel good about taking the time to produce something positive for others instead of just myself, but I have also gained a friend in whom I can confide and who can teach me so much, given her 87 years of life experience.
Tuesday then turned sour because of family conflicts that left me feeling stressed and not happy about myself. It carried into Wednesday, but I went for a run last night that dissipated the struggles I felt. After my run, as I did my cool down walk around the park, I noticed a tree that looked very peculiar and I studied the tree for a good amount of time. I tend to look at plants, animals, and geologic formations like they’re artwork in museums. I wondered why the tree looked so odd, as if it were diseased, and tried to hypothesize a scientific explanation for what happened to the tree.
When I was living in Brentwood, I forced myself to wake up a half hour earlier everyday to walk instead of drive to my rotation site. I used to relish that daily half-hour walk to the hospital and the half-hour walk back to my Airbnb. It forced me to slow down and focus on my breath, the breeze on my skin, the abundant sunlight streaming into my pores. For that one hour each day, I wasn’t trying to work up as many patients as I could, spending my lunch break absorbing as much information from the lecture as I could, and scrambling to do my assignments as efficiently as possible in order to get enough sleep. Those walks brought me a dose of happiness, but they were daily doses.
Taking the time to slow down and just wonder about nature similarly brought me happiness last night, as my Brentwood walks used to do. However, I was aware last night that wondering about a tree in my local park is no longer a moment that will get me through just one day; rather, it’s a moment that I need to savor to get me through this summer. What I used to do every ordinary day in Brentwood, enjoying my walk outside, is now something I must value so deeply that it can make me feel complete this summer. I will be starting a rigorous year of residency in about a month, and I have no trip to look forward to before then. I need to find fulfillment from experiences that are on a much smaller scale.
I’ve realized how much I relied on activities like rappelling down waterfalls, white water rafting, spelunking, cliff diving, hiking up close to volcanoes, snorkeling (all things I’ve anticipated all year doing in Hawaii) to make me say, “Ok, I’m living my life fully and am ready to get back to work and start residency now.” I expected so much, and COVID has taught me that I need to expect way less. I need to learn to be content with this upcoming June and feel rejuvenated to tackle the year ahead.
My friend and I went to a hole-in-the-wall burrito joint today in Boyle Heights and then ate in Elysian Park. It was my first time at Elysian Park and I had known prior that I could get good views of downtown there. But I liked the view of the small houses better because I didn’t expect it. We just pulled over to the side of a road and I was surprised to find a gorgeous view of the freeway and just a bunch of houses on the hills. I opened the graduation/farewell gift that he got me: a Bob Ross coloring book full of amazing Bob Ross quotes (because I love nature), crayons, a copy of the book “Lord of the Flies” (love that book), a sticker, and a mens’ Bruce Lee t-shirt that I’ll totally wear all the time.
Speaking of graduation gifts, the pharmacists and co-interns from work got me a cute yoga crop top and leggings, probably because I live in workout clothes/sweats and attended almost every single intern meeting and class in workout clothes because I’m always a slob. My mentor gave me a trendy backpack from Nordstrom and a Figs gift card to get me residency ready (I’m spoiled.) My sister got me wireless ear buds. My supervisor got me a big bottle of rose and a Starbucks gift card. One of the pharmacists at work got me a tumbler with the perfect phrase on it, and my co-intern got me a mug with pictures of us on it. I absolutely love all of the gifts and am beyond grateful for the outpouring of love I’ve received. It really means so much to me that people were thoughtful enough to get me gifts.
But there have been so many people who have also taken the time to precept me, teach me, support me, and be my friends, and those are gifts for which I am extremely grateful as well.
It was a weird feeling to see Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, Dodgers Stadium, Chinatown, and downtown today while knowing that I’m moving away on Sunday, which is also my birthday. The quintessential LA landmarks feel like home, but I’m about to adopt a new city as home. I’m moving a lot sooner than I had planned for or expected, but I suppose big changes sometimes arrive at your doorstep before you’re ready.

The tropics before dawn hold a hint of chill along with the promise of growing light. The sea is calm in the early morning hours. A gentle breeze fills your lungs with salty air untouched on its journey across thousands of miles of open ocean. All converge this morning, this place, this meditation. Your mind is at peace and your heart is centered as the first sunrays split the air, cracking through the horizon to bring another day to the islands. This day, anything is possible.
Hawaii is a land unlike any other. From its earliest beginnings—when molten lava exploded from the depths of the earth and sea, when Polynesian voyagers navigated across thousands of miles of empty water to inhabit this island paradise, when Captain Cook began the period of contact with the Western world and paid for it with his life—the islands of Hawaii have constantly evolved, grown, changed.
Sense of adventure? Required. You can see the adventure—quite literally—by watching one of the many blockbuster movies or series filmed in Hawaii: Jurassic Park, Jumanji, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lost, Gilligan’s Island and many others were filmed on island, to tap into the pervasive sense of isolation and the thrill of rising to a challenge. Today, locals and visitors experience the ‘aina (land) in many forms synonymous with adventure: yoga, hiking, surfing, swimming, ziplining, kayaking, even mediating.
The people of Hawaii believe appreciating the land today motivates us to sustain it for tomorrow. Ancient Hawaiians even asked permission from Laka, the goddess of hula and forest plants who dwelled in the forested realms, before hiking into the mountain forests. Today, that same love and respect for nature and spirit of adventure draw many to the islands.
Hiking the Islands
What could be more in tune with the true desire of a yogi? Hike through the mountains in a misting rain, following the roar of falling water until you arrive at the clear pool catching the abundant fresh water pouring off the side of a mountain. Moments of tranquil stillness within the unabated roar that surrounds us allows space to tap into the peace that expands outward from center. It’s having confidence to move forward in hope when trying something new, and appreciating the connection with others—and self—that grows from moments shared, moments we connect, moments we’re renewed.
Your Chance to Fly
Have you ever dreamed of flying? Dreams come true in Hawaii with a variety of ziplining adventures. Walk through ancient forests and smell the spicy sweetness of the sacred woods, then leap out of your comfort zone into a soaring experience unlike any other. Sweep over river valleys, waterfalls, and jungle in this high-flying mode of transportation. Most tours begin with a short drive up to the base of the first zipline. You might pass lush banana or massive monkeypod trees, or catch a glimpse of the broad sweep of the Pacific Ocean.
The staggering Ko’olau mountains tower over much of the island, with tenacious foliage and nearly unreachable jungle clinging to walls of exposed lava rock. You’ll strap into a safety harness and clip into the zipline before teetering at the edge of a platform and making that leap into space for an exhilarating slide of up to half a mile. Catch your breath, then hike on and do it again! Most zipline tours include suspension bridges and short hikes along with zips. Beyond the thrill of zipping, these tours can open up parts of the island inaccessible to most hikers. Some islands (Maui and the Big Island) even offer rappelling down waterfalls as part of the package.
Kayaking
If ziplining doesn’t appeal, pick up a paddle instead; it’s time for a kayaking adventure! Out on the water, you can glide along the fine line between the worlds of sea and sky. This is one time when the journey is truly the destination, so explore the experience at your own pace. Just below the surface, a whole new world emerges: colorful fish, living coral, and honu—so many honu. Encountering one of these protected green sea turtles and watching their fluid grace and surprising speed is an electrifying and unforgettable experience. Open your eyes and heart and tap into the mana—Hawaiian spiritual power and healing energy—to see the island the way the first voyagers did. Marvel at the bold colors that rise out of the water and extend below. Circle an offshore island, or let the wind and waves guide your journey. Floating here gives a sense that nothing lies behind or ahead; everything exists in this moment, and you have arrived.
Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga
Leave the four walls of your studio behind and let the board be your mat. Even experienced yogis will find new challenges and a greater connection with the elements. A session starts before touching the water—be sure to slather on reef safe, waterproof sunscreen. Drink lots of water and have a small snack to ward off any motion sickness. Boards are anchored in calm ocean water, but waves passing beneath with move the board slightly. All that extra movement can cause people to tense up and hold their breath. Keep breathing. Let your mind take your breath back to the very beginning and focus on breathing in, breathing out, as the waves pass under the board and beyond. When the worst thing that can happen is a slip and a dip in Hawaii’s sparkling waters, how bad can it be? So breathe, try, laugh, and—most of all—don’t be afraid to fall. You can always get back up again.
youtube
A silent step in sand, a spray of salt water, the unfamiliar rustle of palm trees in the winter—the end of the day falls quickly in the tropics, with darkness descending rapidly after the sun sinks again beneath the waves. The evening is soft and warm, colors streaking briefly across the sky as the stars appear—the same stars that lead the first voyagers to this land of adventure, where fears are overcome, where new things begin. When the Big Dipper appears, track the two stars on the front of its ladle. They form a straight line with Polaris, the North Star—the star that guides until the sun again rises. Where is it leading you?

Interview with Competitive Tree Climber Joshua Burr
Bartlett: Thanks for taking the time out for this interview! Why don’t you start by letting everyone know who you are, your age, and where you’re from! Give us some background on you!
Josh: Hi, thank you so much for having me! My name is Joshua Burr, I’m 22, from Oxford, Michigan. I’ve been climbing everything since I could walk. First time at the rock climbing gym was for my 10th birthday, started with a tree service when I was 15, started industrial rigging for concerts when I was a Senior at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and when I was 19 I got rope access/SPRAT certified.
Bartlett: That's so much, so quickly, all before you were even 20!! WOW! So where are you living now and what are you doing?
Josh: Towards the end of 2019 I moved out to Maryland. I’ve been so busy with climbing trips and competitions that the rope access work has slowly taken a back seat but I still practice the skills regularly.
Bartlett: We’re super impressed with how young you are and everything you’ve already accomplished and experienced. Let’s talk about what started it all. What did you do before you were a full time arborist? Can you tell us a little more about your concert and rope access gigs.
Josh: I have actually set up for the Presidential Inauguration along with a few other presidential/political events. I’ve set up the rigging for different music festivals and flown out to different venues like the Twins Stadiums and US Bank Stadium for Taylor Swift and KISS!!
Bartlett: Right on! That's super cool!! And you're known for rock climbing and ice climbing as well?
Josh: Oh yes!! Started with rock climbing when I was 10 at the rock climbing gym and really took off with it when I met my rock climbing mentor Matt Foss on a rock climbing trip to Kentucky that he was guiding was I was around 16 ish. Now I see the climbing gym as an awesome way to exercise and work my brain by getting through the climbing problems. I regularly go on climbing trips to the red river gorge in Kentucky and have recently found some cool rock climbing spots in Maryland.
Bartlett: With all of these options what made you fall in love with working primarily with trees?
Josh: The freedom, along with the ability to move in 3D. Trees to me are almost an awesome blend of rock climbing and industrial.
Bartlett: Interesting!! So what or who do you feel as though got your “feet off the ground” / “foot in the door” in the tree industry? How did you start this journey?
Josh: I started with an unprofessional tree service for the first 3 years. No safety culture and of course spike pruning, and I was none the wiser, that’s how everyone does tree work, right? When I was 17 Joey Drinkhorn invited me to Tree Jam Camp and that was the total game changer. That’s actually where I met my now boss. Since then I’ve done Tree Jam Camp a second time, Michigan state 3 times, Ohio, Hawaii, Taiwan, ARC, and NAOM twice!
Bartlett: We love that you've just ran with this, all around the world! You’re a climber that is quickly gaining a name for yourself in this industry. What’s your latest accomplishment professionally?
Josh: The opportunity to Co-teach a class with my boss Chris Coates at Legends(Legends Tree Climbing Championship)! It’s about staying on rope while passing redirects and high lines and hammocking!
Bartlett: Any epic adventures you’ve done personally lately? We at Bartlett may have heard something about a cave.
Josh: The cave was Ellison cave in Georgia! The biggest drop we did was called the fantastic pit, 586 feet, with a 500ft waterfall, that we had to rappel through 150ft of, and ascend back up. There was another one called the warm up pit around 130ft.
Bartlett: That is just so epic!! Hearing all these experiences, we have to ask, what do you think the biggest key is to your progression?
Josh: Setting the bar very high, just out of reach. Along with always searching for an opportunity to learn something.
Bartlett: Before you settled down in Maryland you did a lot of traveling being a self employed contract climber. What kind of experience was that for you?
Josh: Greatly beneficial!! Even with the company I’m with now, we will drive around 2 hrs to go work with other friend's companies sometimes. Seeing how others get jobs done, while working to mitigate hazards and stay safe can be a major learning tool.
Bartlett: So true, and we love this community over competition attitude you have. What would you say was the coolest experience to come from that?
Josh: Getting to work out in Hawaii is always a pleasure, but the greatest joys are the people you get to meet, along with some amazing views.
Bartlett: So, so true! What would be your biggest piece of advice to someone wanting to become a contract climber?
Josh: Networking is key, and tree climbing competitions can be a huge tool for just that! Networking, connecting with and meeting new people.
Bartlett: We totally agree! Do you have any big goals for 2020?
Josh: I am very much looking forward to getting back to Asia for their tree climbing competition! Made some cool friends out there!
Bartlett: Awesome dude. We love this. Thank you so much for sharing your past, present, and future story with us all!! Any closing statements before we sign off?
Josh: Looking forward to hanging out with you guys on Belle isle this year!!! There are certainly some good trees to choose from!! Thank you for this opportunity to share! You guys are the best!

10 Top Costa Rica Adults Only Hotels
Costa Rica is a paradise for honeymoons, anniversary trips, bachelorette and bachelor parties, and other special adults-only getaways. The beaches and volcanoes are picture perfect spots for hiking, rappelling, rafting, and zip-lining your way through the rainforest.
Not surprisingly, the potential for amazing adventures also attracts a large number of families to Costa Rica each year. Over peak travel periods like Christmas and spring break, it is not uncommon to share pool space with travelers of all ages. Yes, Costa Rica is an excellent natural playground for kids, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a relaxing adults-only vacation. It’s simply a matter of choosing the right accommodations.
Whether you’re embarking on a girl’s trip or exploring as newlyweds, there are a number of unique lodges, villas, and bungalows to suit your needs. Here are the Experts’ top picks for Costa Rica adults-only hotels:
Nayara Springs Resort, Arenal
Arenal Volcano is one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica, especially for families. Even so, it is possible to have a more adult-focused stay without someone’s kids splashing their way through your hot springs experience.
Nayara Springs Resort is the adults-only sister to the Arenal Nayara Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel designed with adults in mind. Each villa at Nayara Springs is surrounded by thick, tropical vegetation creating a secluded hideaway for honeymooners and couples who crave privacy. The private thermal plunge pool eliminates the need to visit any of Arenal’s hot springs, which are frequented by families and day-trippers from San Jose.  Visit the wine bar at Arenal Nayara next door for a pairing, or try out the innovative cuisine at the Asian fusion restaurant.
Kura Design Villas, Uvita
Adults in search of quiet luxury should consider retreating to Kura’s stylish villas, perched on the cliffs high above Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast. This sleek boutique resort showcases modern design, a stark and stunning contrast to the rainforest that surrounds it.
Like something out of a magazine, Kura Design Villas‘ infinity pool blends seamlessly with the ocean in the distance, creating an endless sea of blue to gaze upon as you relax with a drink and soak up the sun.  Sometimes, it is impossible to tell whether you’re looking at the pool, the ocean, or the sky. If you prefer to have your toes in the sand, Uvita’s beaches which are just as unforgettable as the poolside scene.
There are only 8 villas at Kura, so even when the hotel is full guests can expect an intimate and exclusive experience. Not to be outdone by the architecture, the human element at Kura is impressive as well. Personalized service and premium amenities are consistent throughout your stay.
Banana Azul Hotel, Puerto Viejo
While most families are vacationing on the Pacific coast, adults would be wise to check out the less-trodden southern Caribbean coast. At Banana Azul Hotel you’ll enjoy an adults-only atmosphere in a lively location. Choose between the main building’s rustic oceanfront rooms or the Villas Verde with private plunge pools. Banana Azul’s beachfront location allows you to be as mobile or stationary as you please. A 10-15 minute walk down Playa Negra will bring you to downtown Puerto Viejo, but drink service at the hotel means you can stay put if you so choose. It’s all about the flexibility to play things by ear, as with most matters in the south Caribbean.
Bike rentals are available through the tour desk and the best way to explore the beaches of the South Caribbean.  Start from the hotel and ride down the main road to Playa Cocles, Punta Uva, and on to Manzanillo. This scenic coastal ride takes you 13 km down the coast to Gandoca-Manzanillo National Park, where you can snorkel, hike, and enjoy more pristine beaches.
Makanda by the Sea Hotel, Manuel Antonio
Breakfast delivered to your room daily is one of the perks of this boutique adults only hotel on the Central Pacific coast. Makanda’s newly-renovated villas are embedded into the rainforest to give you a comfortable luxury experience without compromising on nature. The Manuel Antonio National Park is just 5 minutes away by car and the Damas Island Estuary mangroves just 15-20 minutes, allowing you to get a taste of Costa Rica’s biodiversity.
Costa Rica Experts Don’t Miss Pick: Dining poolside as the sun sets over the Pacific.
Casa Chameleon Hotel, Mal Pais
Ultra Luxury Villa view
The Nicoya Peninsula is pretty remote compared to other areas of Costa Rica. It is best accessed by plane, and most roads are still unpaved. Perhaps too much of a jaunt for some, the laid back stretch of rugged coast on the peninsula’s southern tip is the perfect off-the-beaten-path hideaway for others.
Between Santa Teresa and Cabo Blanco is Casa Chameleon Hotel, a collection of private villas designed to showcase the rugged scenery of the southern section of the peninsula. It is best reached by domestic flight, followed by a 4×4 transfer on the area’s (mostly) unpaved roads. Thanks to the extra effort it takes to reach this sweet spot, you can be sure that you won’t see many families vacationing around here.

7 Of The Best Maui Adventures You've Probably Never Heard About
7 Of The Best Maui Adventures You’ve Never Heard About
All the guide books tell us about the most popular Maui activities such as the Road to Hana, Snorkel Tours, Whale Watching and Biking Down A Volcano but have you heard that you can be a Mermaid For A Day?  How about Rappelling down a Waterfall or Jungle Wall?
Today we explore 7 Of The Best Maui Adventures You’ve Never Heard About.
  1. Rappel A Waterfall!
Get your helmet on and be brave! Take a tour with Rappel Maui and see what it’s like to “walk down walls of water and rock on Maui, one of the most remote places on Earth, it’s an activity that engages all the senses.”
From their website;
About Rappel Maui Imagine the beauty, the wonder, the magic of Hawaii’s tropical rainforest and waterfalls. Now you can experience it all in the most intimate, thrilling way: Cruising down jungle canyon cliffs and natural waterfalls by way of rappelling. What is rappelling? It’s a practice used in the outdoor adventure sport of canyoneering to explore vertical terrain using fixed or anchored ropes and other equipment.
More info here: https://www.rappelmaui.com
                2. Make your own souvenir at Moana Glass Blowing.  Imagine making and taking home your own hand blown glass starfish, bowl, ornament or fish!  This is truly a great (5 Yelp Stars) and unique activity!
More info here: https://www.blowglasshawaii.com/
  3. Paddle with a local canoe club.
Kihei Canoe Club offers a visitor paddling program which includes an introduction to Hawaiian Culture, instruction in outrigger canoe paddling, and discussion of the local sea life. Paddling sessions usually begin with E Ala E, a traditional chant to welcome the rising sun. This is followed by paddling instruction. Canoes launch about 8:00am and return approximately 9:00am. Depending on conditions, we may paddle to an outer reef to see large sea turtles, venture out to observe whales or head north toward Kealia Pond and Sugar Beach. After returning we end the program with a Mahalo chant to give thanks to the land, the sea and to Hawaiian deities such as na kupuna (ancestors) and na aumakua (family gods.)
The visitor program is offered on Tuesday and Thursday year round, conditions permitting. Adults and children over the age of 9 are welcome to paddle with experienced club members in single or double hull outrigger canoes. We do not take reservations, so plan to be at the club early. Sign-in begins at 7:00am. This is a very popular activity and is strictly first-come, first-served. No previous experience required.
A tax deductible donation of $40 per adult is suggested and is used to support the various education and paddling programs the club offers.
More info here: http://www.kiheicanoeclub.com
  4. Be a Mermaid for a day.
Mermaid tails are all the rage and for good reason- they are a fun and exciting way to explore the ocean! With Hawaii Mermaid Adventures, learn to swim like a mermaid while creating great memories on your Maui vacation.
Your swim instructors are certified lifeguards with years of experience. They will keep everyone safe while capturing great web-quality photos too. No extra charge!
We had a blast mermaidung with @travelchannel! . #Repost @travelchannel with @get_repost ・・・ Become the mermaid you always knew you were when you visit @hawaiimermaidadventures! 🧜‍♀️💦🧜‍♂️ #TravelChannel #ExploreYourWorld #MermaidLife #Maui

  5. Track the stars on a Volcano Summit. “Guided Sunset & Stargazing Tours at Haleakala Summit. Join Maui Stargazing for a stunning sunset at Haleakala Summit followed by a science-based, 60 to 90-minute guided telescope tour of the cosmos. Observe the most deep-sky objects through the largest portable telescope on Haleakala. Stay warm in our winter jacket and snowboard pants in sizes from toddler to 4-XL. This Haleakala National Park astronomy tour spans five hours.”
“Start with a breathtaking sunset at the summit of Haleakala, Maui’s 10,000′ dormant volcano. Before darkness settles, we move to a family-friendly observing site for a fascinating laser-guided tour of the constellations and unparalleled views in the field setting. You’re treated to telescope views of the visible planets and deep-sky objects of the Milky Way, including nebulae, star clusters, and the galaxies beyond through a 12-inch aperture Dobsonian telescope! Maui Stargazing supplies all the necessary warm clothing to keep you comfortable throughout the stargazing session.”

  6. Learn to play the Ukulele with Locals! Ever wanted to learn to play the Ukulele? It’s one of the top items in our Maui Bucket List. So why not take a free class with 808UkuJams?
We’ve covered this adventure in another blog post here, on Thursday evenings the Keolahou Hawaiian Congregational Church hosts 808Uke Jam, a wonderful class of ukulele enthusiast of all different levels hosted and taught by Jared Delos Santos.  It begins promptly at 7pm and ends at 9pm. This is open to those who love the ukulele and want to learn (or even if you just want to check it out).  Ukulele’s are available to rent – arrive early (give yourself at least 20 minutes to get a Ukulele, song book and music stand.)
Check out Google for some basic chords before arriving – it helps if you familiarize yourself a little.

USA’s 15 Best Summer Adventure Vacations To Get Your Adrenaline Pumping
If museum trips and beach time make you drowsy, it might be time to consider an adventure vacation this summer. These are our top picks for high-energy travel spots, along with some sweet vacation rental pads where you can unwind after scaling desert cliffs, kayaking rapids, or leaping from tall buildings (safely, of course). Because not every summer vacation should be relaxing.
Top Adventure Trips In America
America’s not for the faint of heart. The lower 48 alone have sheer rock walls, raging whitewater, and endless surf breaks. Add in Alaska and Hawaii, and you’re dodging grizzly bears and lava flows. Sound like fun? We think so too. If you’re planning a summer adventure vacation in the USA, every one of these destinations is bucket list material.
Vacation rentals—which you can book right here FlipKey—are a great choice for active trips, with room for the whole adventurous crew. Choose from homes with their own beachfronts, hot tubs, and fully equipped kitchens for cooking up your catch of the day. They’re affordable, too, so you can save some cash for a post-adventure massage (you might need one).
Call up your most daring friends or family, browse our top summer adventure vacations, and book a great place to stay. Better yet? Once you decide on a destination and rental, you can book all your tours, activities, and attractions with our friends at TripAdvisor—right on their site!
Custer, South Dakota | Black Hills And Badlands
In the heart of the Black Hills National Forest, Custer is a great home base for an adventure vacation in South Dakota. Think “Home on the Range”: herds of bison, thick pine forests, and rocky peaks rising from the prairie. The Black Hills are a magnet for mountain biking and hiking, but to experience the scale of America’s great plains, check it all out from above on a hot air balloon tour.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Custer!
Anchorage, Alaska
Summer in Alaska means long days and sunshine, ideal for adventure trips to the surrounding mountains and coast, which get vast and wild just beyond the city limits. Search for grizzly bears and caribou on a wildlife tour from Anchorage, or hike the vast Matanuska Glacier, donning crampons for a hike across the ice.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Anchorage!
Springdale, Utah | Zion National Park
A rainbow of towering sandstone cliffs below a huge desert sky—Zion National Park is among America’s most spectacular places for adventure travel. The options are endless here, and you can dare yourself to follow the vertigo-inducing path to Angel’s Landing, get wet while canyoneering in The Narrows, or try scaling the heights on a guided rock climbing expedition. We recommend staying in a Springdale rental, so you’re right at the park’s front door.
See all TripAdvisor rentals near Zion National Park!
Colorado Springs, Colorado
The Rocky Mountains erupt on the edge of Colorado Springs, an adventure travel hotspot with easy access to the Front Range. Scale the towering sandstone of Garden of the Gods on a rock climbing tour, then try off-roading into Colorado’s Pike National Forest, driving up to 11,200 feet above sea level.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Colorado Springs!
Outer Banks, North Carolina
With coastline for days, the Outer Banks make a dreamy summer adventure vacation destination. This is the spot to leave mainland life behind. Explore the shore on a rented beach cruiser bicycle, take a paddleboard out for a spin, or amp up the adrenaline while learning to surf in Kill Devil. Nags Head also boasts the famous Jockey’s Ridge State Park, with two of the highest sand dunes on the East Coast.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in the Outer Banks!
West Yellowstone, Montana | Yellowstone National Park
The first national park on earth, it’s no surprise that Yellowstone appears on many adventure travel bucket lists. It’s a popular destination—with a West Yellowstone rental being the perfect home base—but there are plenty of ways to ditch the crowds, too. Instead of approaching the bubbling geysers and pools by land, launch a kayak into Yellowstone Lake for a completely different perspective on the volcanic landscape. Not exciting enough? Go look for wolves and grizzly bears on a private wildlife tour.
See all TripAdvisor rentals near Yellowstone!
Sedona, Arizona
Red rocks and maze-like canyons hold a lifetime of hiking trails that that surround this new-age desert town. Locals swear it’s an energy vortex, but it’s also a great home base for some of the best summer adventure trips in the American southwest. Join a float trip down the Colorado River, or take an off-road Jeep tour to ancient ruins. Not all Sedona adventures mean getting dirty, though (this intuitive-led spirit journey goes way off the beaten path).
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Sedona!
Pocono Mountains Region, Pennsylvania
Forested peaks, churning rivers, and endless trails make the Pocono Mountains a stellar summer adventure vacation. You can ride a powerful surge of water on a white-water rafting trip that’s timed to a dam release, then rent a bike to take on the 26-mile Lehigh Gorge Trail, pausing for swim breaks in the nearby river.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in the Poconos!
Maui, Hawaii
From towering waterfalls to bamboo forests and world-class surfing, the gorgeous island of Maui has the ingredients for an unforgettable adventure vacation. You can ride a bike down a volcano then zipline through the jungle, or paddle into the break at Lahaina with a private surfing instructor. If you start to overheat, trade the lush lowlands for bare, volcanic rock in Haleakala National Park, an otherworldly landscape of cooled lava and cinder cones.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Maui!
Hood River, Oregon
Wind whistles through the Columbia River Gorge, whipping kiteboarders and windsurfers across the broad waterway at top speeds. Not that it’s all flat water at this adventure travel destination—white-water rafting on the nearby White Salmon River is a thrilling trip through Class III and Class IV rapids.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Hood River!
Franconia, New Hampshire
New Hampshire’s White Mountains aren’t as famous as the West’s large peaks, but don’t be fooled. Mount Washington, the tallest summit in New England, sees some of the most dramatic weather on earth. Just driving the super-exposed toll road to the top is an adrenaline rush. To really leave the crowds behind on an adventure tour, opt for a helicopter trip over the White Mountain peaks and valleys of Franconia Notch. Another fan favorite for getting a bird’s eye view is hopping aboard the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tram.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Franconia!
Bar Harbor, Maine
Take a pre-dawn hike up Cadillac Mountain and you’ll catch America’s first light—its peaks see the earliest sunrise in the continental United States for much of the year. The mountaintop is a favorite destination in Acadia National Park, a gorgeous adventure travel spot that sprawls across Mount Desert Island. Rappel down Otter Cliff then tackle challenging rock climbing as waves crash below your feet. For stellar views of the surrounding islands, scale the exposed paths up Beehive Trail, which features iron rungs sunk into the pink granite.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Bar Harbor!
Yosemite National Park, California
One of California’s most iconic spots for adventure vacations, Yosemite National Park is a pilgrimage place for outdoors-lovers. Get your heart pounding on a guided hike in the High Sierra, or climb the steep path up Half Dome, an exposed rock peak that’s a Yosemite Valley rite of passage. It’s not all so hair-raising, though: after a long day on the trail, find a shady spot by the Merced River to soak your feet.
See all TripAdvisor rentals near Yosemite!
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
The gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg is a great summer adventure vacation destination in the South, with plenty of ways to get off-road and into the woods. Try renting a four-person ATV for a day of exploring that’s rugged and independent. If you’d rather hunt for some of the waterfalls hidden throughout the park, opt for a guided hiking tour that leaves marked trails behind.
See all TripAdvisor rentals in Gatlinburg!
Las Vegas, Nevada
Not every adrenaline-fueled adventure trip is about the great outdoors, and Las Vegas is ground zero for some seriously heart-pounding experiences. If you’ve got the nerve, challenge yourself to jump from the Stratosphere Tower, race exotic cars,  go skydiving, or try “land sailing,” streaking across the desert in a sail-powered trike.
