Due to much reblog of your art in front of my dash- HOW DO YOU DRAW MOUTHS!? (Also I have your patreon pinned now)

thank you so much!!! the secret is bullshitting it until it looks right finding the structure of the face! i'm a huge proponent of various aspects of the reily method of figure drawing, and while im not formally trained in it, i've taken a lot of notes on it from free info on the internet (namely watts atelier, which sadly i did not go to for my arts education lol) and i use it to plot out some key things on the face!

assuming you begin with the head as a ball and split it into 4 even chunks, the eyes are placed a bit lower than the bottom half of the circle, with the eyebrows around the midpoint. the thing we do here is steal a little bit from the loomis method--

to find the side planes of the head! if you feel around where your temples are, you'll notice that area all the way back to the end of your ear is pretty flat! you might also notice that beneath your temples and just behind the eyes, there's a bony protrusion--

the cheekbones! finding those is probably the most important thing here (real reily method truthers are lambasting me for my shorthand here) but once you find it, you can find basically everything else in the face.

this shape descending from the cheekbones is actually where your nostrils sit (beneath the eyes) and how your mandibles sit!

see how it's starting to look like a skull? these are all the bony landmarks, which go a long way towards determining where fat and skin sit on the face.

that's where the teeth go!

and that's the skull at large!

as a shorthand, im usually far more focused on just getting this side plane of the head defined, as once you have it, you know where pretty much everything going on with the head. the thing about mouths specifically is that they're more of an exercise in shape language than they are anything anatomical (so long as you arent making them a detailed focal point at least) so as long as you know where to put everything else, a mouth will usually feel like it belongs on a face.

and when the mouth becomes long and you must SCREAM, because you know where the mandible connects to the jaw, you'll be able to simply unhinge it and yell!

"We the Scions of Salem do not require allies, we do not form friendships, nor we do need the foolish illusions of dreams to carry us." Minos' voice would say with Hideyoshi's shielf glowing as it looks as if he is in combat with someone.

"Come now! Fear is in everyone! Faunus, Human, Grimm!! IT REALLY DOESNT MATTER TO ME!!!!!" Tartarus shouts as he rushes at Louvel who has a look of shock on his face.

"How far are you willing to go to claim power then Professor Krieg? Because now.... I have it at the tips of my very fingers." Watts would say showing a wounded Krieg holding his arm.

"Machine and Man.... that is what Watts and I shall do..... turn this place into nothing but mere Metal..." Omega said while it shows Corona and Kazura laying on the floor wounded whil Cinder looks back with a smirk on her face to which Blades lip trembles a bit until....

"Just... Just.... WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE CINDER!!!!!!!"

OST: Grace of the Moonlit Sky (Autoplay Warning/Spoiler for FFXIV)

"Another Temple?! This time in the sky?!" Merlinda said, showing the temple as Tessa smirks holding the Relic of Destruction in her hands.

"If we are going to stop Salem and the Grimm Terror we're going to need the power of three Grimm Titans!" Krieg would say showing a mural of the three Titans.

"What concerns me is why did she create the Warriors of Vacuo...." Hideyoshi said crossing his arms, while a magical hologram of the possible leader of the Warriors of Vacuo looked at something.

"Well I cant just send you back out there with your weapons looking like shit." A gravely voice said with Inferno and Voltage being destroyed by someone......

Sir James Jebusa Shannon, R.A. (1862-1923)

The Silver Ship

The son of Irish parents James Jebusa Shannon was born in Auburn, New York. Aged sixteen he camed to London in 1878 and studied at the Government Art Training School, South Kensington. He made his debut at the Royal Academy aged 19 when he exhibited a portrait of the Hon. Horatia Stopford in 1881, and Mrs Henry Bourke in 1882, both portraits of Ladies in Waiting having been commissioned by Queen Victoria. Although he received his art education in England, Shannon was touched by the current fashion for square-brush handling which emanated from the Paris ateliers. By the mid-1890s he was considered 'as virtually court painter for Violet, Duchess of Rutland' (Kenneth McConkey, Edward Portraits, Woodbridge, 1987, p. 119). She was an amateur artist remarkable for her precocious talent and was exhibiting professionally by the age of twenty-two at the Grosvenor Gallery, newly opened by her cousin Sir Coutts Lindsay. She was one of the most brilliant members of the aristocratic and aesthetic circle known as 'The Souls' and her outstanding beauty inspired several of the leading artists of the day including Jacques Emile Blanche and George Frederic Watts, although Shannon was her favourite.

George Moore acknowledged him as 'the man born to paint English duchesses' despite considering him socially ambitious and it is said that wives lingered in front of his work and demanded of their husbands 'Why can't you afford to let me be painted by Mr Shannon?'. He was a founder member of the New English Art Club in 1886 and exhibited there under Whistler's regime but resigned in 1892. During the 1890s his style broadened under the influence of Sargent, so much so that he was even considered by some as his rival. Shannon was awarded medals for portraiture in Paris, Berlin and Vienna, and his paintings The Flower Girl and Phil May were purchased by the Chantrey Bequest for the Tate Gallery in 1901. In 1901 he became the President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and he became a full Academician in 1909 He was knighted in 1922.

It is likely that The Silver Ship dates from the 1890s as during that decade there were a number of small-scale fashion revivals including the leg-of-mutton sleeve which became increasingly voluminous in the mid-1890s. These 'balloon' sleeves, very much in evidence here, were often worn off-the-shoulder and terminated in deep forearm cuffs of the sort which had been popular in the reign of Louis Philippe.

Shannon painted several works of this period in which the subject was in an 'action pose'. For this he was considered 'an artist and a portrait painter afterwards' by Lewis Hind writing in the Studio (1896; vol. VII, p. 68). The lady in The Silver Ship is as yet unidentified and poses holding the object of the title. Aesthetic harmony is of paramount importance over and above likeness and it was this aesthetic interest that gave Shannon his international standing and recognition.

Assignments from Watts Atelier (Intro to Fundamentals 2)

surprisingly these assignments were easier for me than my previous shape studies! In this course I learned how to break down complicated objects into their most simple shapes, as well as how to use comparative measurement. I’m feeling more confident drawing with charcoal, although I still had some trouble laying down smooth tone. Over all I’m pretty happy with the outcome. And with this I am finished with my fundamentals (yay!!) Next I’ll be working on head and portrait.

Friday Night Live: Figure Quicksketch

Most of schedule dictated by what he is teaching or working on.

When he was a student, he tried to have a strict schedule.

Tuesday - head drawing day. Vanderpool book

Wednesday - Figure day - Bridgman. Elbow study.

Working 25 hour job, didn’t have too much time to work on art, so created a schedule on what he will work on.

Always had a master study. 

He chose to do art professionally because he was only good at art.

Good points: You can’t shortcut the process. Go in and draw.

I love drawing, almost to a fault. If I don't get to draw daily I get despondent and fear my abilities will start to slip. Been having to squeeze in whatever I can during lunch while our house is all packed up, so here are 5-10 minute head sketches to help improve my efforts at rendering heads at full figure. Focus is on mark making, caricature, and indication.
