Japanese QL Corner

We are up to seven live airing QLs from Japan! Five of these are on Gaga and two are being generously provided via fansubs.

A brief interlude for me to climb on my soapbox: if you are a fan of Japanese queer media who is not based in Japan, you really should be supporting GagaOOLala. They are the sole international distributor of most of these shows and the only reason international fans can watch them as they release. They’re a queer-owned Taiwanese company specifically focused on providing international access to global queer media, and their monthly subscription is much cheaper than other streaming services. They’re not perfect but they are quite responsive to feedback about their catalogue and approach; please consider subscribing if you love these shows!

I’m really loving most of these shows and I highly recommend jumping in to the weekly watch!

Takara's Treasure

I fall more in love with these two every week. We finally got some answers on Takara's backstory, and as expected, it is the mother who abandoned him that has been harassing him. Taishin blazed in to give that lady a piece of his mind before even realizing who she was, and it only made Takara love him more. The revelation that Takara is holding back with Taishin because he doesn't want to be covetous like his mother sent me into a bit of a tailspin. I loved Taishin getting his moment to reciprocate Takara's care, as well as Takara's amusement that Taishin still hasn't pieced together what they are to each other. I'm excited for it to finally click for him soon.

Sugar Dog Life

I'll be honest, this first episode did not hit right for me. I always struggle with copaganda heavy romances, especially when the show is intentionally framing cops as benevolent and explicitly linking that to the romantic arc. But I liked the cooking parts of it a lot! We'll see how it proceeds. This one is being fan subbed, so if anyone is having trouble finding it feel free to hit me up in DMs and I'll point you.

Cosmetic Playlover

This one is coming in hot with two episodes a week, because Japan is trying to kill me. I like the concept and vibe but the execution is a bit all over the place; it feels like they want this to be a dark story but aren’t willing to fully commit to that, so dark things happen but then get treated too lightly. The pacing also feels a little wacky and we’re rushing through plot and relationship development in a way that leaves it all feeling a bit ungrounded. Sahashi went from harassing and threatening to out Natsume to kissing and claiming to be serious about him in the space of 15 minutes, and then suddenly in the next ep there’s a new villain and suspense plot. This one is just not clicking; I’m tilting my head with a furrowed brow.

I Hear the Sunspot

Sigh. I really didn’t need another arc about a third party interloper coming between the boys, but here we are. Maya is a throwback to the bad old femme fatale archetype steeped in misogyny and I don’t love it. She’s arrogant, manipulative, and mean for no good reason, and she doesn’t feel like she fits in this story about decent people trying their best. There was a way to do this plot with a more sympathetic portrayal of her, but unfortunately they didn't take that route. I’m disappointed that she’s with us for multiple episodes, and it’s hard to believe this rude little girl can really come between them. I said last week that it felt like they regressed Kohei and Taichi’s relationship in the time skip and I’m feeling that even more now. Aside from this mess, I really liked all of Taichi’s scenes with his friends this week as he continues trying to work out his feelings for Kohei. I hope we get back to Taichi and Kohei spending time together again soon; that’s the real heart of this show and I already miss it.

Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko

Sigh. Last week I was mad at the characters around Hiroko, but this week I am forced to be mad at the show for how it's dealing with this entire plot involving Hiroko's decisions about her privacy at work, Risa's inappropriate interference, and Ayaka's bizarre conclusion that she should announce her love for Hiroko to the whole office. This whole love triangle and forced outing plot was ill-considered and it's dragging the show down; we should not have had Risa being so wrong and manipulative or ventured into queer workplace politics at all if the show wasn't prepared to take it seriously. On the plus side, we finally got the backstory for Hiroko, and it was surprising in a good way. I hope this show can get back to the zany comedy it was doing so well before it got bogged down in all this mess.

Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding

Episode 3 just went up on @isaksbestpillow's blog, and it's a fantastic one. I was howling watching Mitsuya wailing on his ex and poor Ishida trying to process this new rival on the scene. Shige continues to be the MVP and I loved the way he encouraged Ishida with a mix of sage advice and sexy sass (also loved that Mitsyua immediately knew that gossip ratted him out). And I screamed again when Ishida got worked up and confessed; I didn't expect that to happen so fast and it was excellent! This show feels so mature in the best way; I really feel like I'm watching adults who have lived.

a/n: feeding you guys one fic a year is so generous, right? right?? also forgive me you guys, it's been a while since i wrote... so mel might be a bit ooc

Mondays were always a pain for the staff at Abbott. Work to catch up on, plan lessons, and more. Just like every other morning, Janine walked into the room with a bright smile. “Guys, did you hear about the new coffee shop that opened down the road?” 

Barbara gave her a glance and shook her head. “I’m satisfied with my regular coffee.”

Ava suddenly bursts through the door. “Girl, no wonder you always be lookin’ so miserable. That new place serves one hell of a coffee, y'all should try.” She grins as she puts countless spoons of sugar into her coffee.

Barbara and Melissa shared a skeptical look before getting up to go set up their classrooms for the incoming kids. Undeterred, Janine turned to Jacob “I’m thinking of checking it out tomorrow, do you wanna come?” 

“I’d be happy to, I’ve been planning to go over there anyway.” Jacob gushes. 

The next morning, the two pulled the door open to the shop and were taken aback by the sight before them. Compared to the frigid air outside, the cafe felt welcoming. The walls were plain white, but many paintings adorned them. Strings of warm lights hung from the ceiling, inviting passersby to sit and relax. You just opened the cafe a mere 15 minutes ago and the ring of your doorbell caught your attention as you were cleaning the counter.

“Hi! Welcome to my cafe, what can I get you?” You beamed as you leaned on the counter with both of your arms. Business has been slow ever since you started the shop, so it was nice to see people come in.

“Just a cappuccino, please,” the woman says excitedly and moves to sit down at one of the tables. You nodded and turned to her friend to find him staring at cookies, donuts, croissants, and muffins through the glass. You clear your throat and his attention redirects back to you as he orders quickly to join his friend at the table. You quickly get to work and start preparing.

You approach them, with the two drinks and snack in hand. Putting them on the table, you ask, “Are you guys from the school across from here? I don’t get a lot of customers, so it would make sense if you guys work nearby.” They take a sip as they listen to your inquiries and their eyes widen as they drink more. 

“Yeah, we’re from Abbott, the school just across from here. I’m sorry, but I just got to say, this coffee is absolutely amazing,” Janine rapidly finishes as she drinks more. You hear a muffle from her companion, which you could make out was along the lines of, “I know right.” You let out a light chuckle. The woman sticks her hand out and says, “By the way, my name’s Janine, and my friend over there is Jacob.” At the mention of his name, Jacob pauses from eating to give you a small wave. 

“Nice to meet you guys, I’m Y/N.”

Janine and Jacob talked to you for a few more minutes before they had to go back to prepare for their classes. They promised to come here as often as they could for their coffee. Over the course of a few weeks, you became good friends with both of them and often joined them for meetups outside of work.

You got a call from Janine about a week ago about having some drinks and snacks out for the staff at Abbott to enjoy. She asked if you could provide them and bring them over. “I’m sorry if this is kind of last minute,” she says nervously. “It’s okay, Janine. I’ll bring them over next Monday,” you replied reassuringly.

Monday came quickly and before you knew it, you found yourself in front of Abbott Elementary with armfuls of coffee and food. Scrambling to the counter, you ask the person in the front for a pass (Janine said you needed one) and made your way towards the staff room. There were already a good amount of teachers chatting amongst themselves. Janine made her way up to you as she took the boxes off your hands and set them on one of the tables. “Everyone, this is Y/N. She owns the coffee shop across from the school and was kind enough to bring us some coffee and food to get through the morning!” Janine rambles eagerly. 

Everyone’s eyes were on you as you gave a small wave and started to hand out some coffee. You let your eyes drift to a redhead with glasses focused on grading some papers. Noticing no coffee next to her, you made your way toward the table and gently put down a cup next to her. The sound made Melissa look up, preparing to give a cold response. However, she was surprised to find a sweet and unfamiliar face. 

Not expecting her eyes to look so mesmerizing, you practically stutter out, “Hi, I noticed you didn’t have any coffee cup next to you, so I just wanted to give you one.” Melissa blinked for few times, not used to kind gestures from strangers, let alone pretty ones. She didn’t reply until Barbara elbowed her side and she jolted back into reality. “Thanks for the coffee, sweetheart,” she murmured. You could feel your face turning beet red at the nickname as you nod slowly and make your way back to the table where Janine sat. 

Melissa smirked at your reaction, watching you turn and walk toward Janine’s table. In the corner of her eye, she saw her friend shaking her head. “Melissa Schemmenti, you sure are something,” Barbara states as she returned to her morning crossword. The redhead shrugged. She already had her coffee for the morning, but she wouldn’t mind another one if it came from you. 

Taking a sip of her new coffee, Melissa paused, licked her lips, and turned to Barbara. “Oh my god, this coffee is unbelievable.” Her friend raised an eyebrow as she took another sip. Melissa thought that it was about time she paid a visit to the coffee shop across the street.

It was a busy morning for you. Your alarm didn’t go off and when you got to the cafe, you found the sink in the back having some issues. You were scrambling to fix the pipes somehow when you hear the doorbell ring. Panicking, you quickly made sure there would be no leaks and stood up, moving to wash your hands. “Hi, welcome to the cafe! Give me one second and I’ll be right with you,” you said promptly. You came out to the front but slowed down when you recognized who it was waiting to order. There she was in all her glory with her leather jacket and fiery hair. Realizing you’re still at work, you snap out of it. “What can I get you?” You lean on the counter waiting for her order.

Approaching the table, you handed the captivating woman her coffee and felt the redhead’s hand brush against yours. Your face was painted with a light blush, causing the woman to grin. “What’s your name, hon?” God, this woman was going to kill you. 

“The name’s Y/N. Nice to finally know the name of the gorgeous lady I saw the other day,” you replied. You weren’t sure where this confidence came from, but those questions disappeared when you witnessed her eyes widen at the unexpected answer. The moment was quick though, for she recovered and quipped back, “Well, nice to meet you Y/N. The name’s Melissa. What’s a pretty girl like you doing working in a coffee shop?”

From then on, Melissa came every morning before her classes started. It didn’t matter the circumstances: rain, hail, shine, snow, she would still be there every single morning chatting away with you. She said that it was because the coffee there was just unmatched by any she’s had anywhere else. You’d like to believe that if it weren’t for the fact that you two exchanged flirtatious remarks every single day.

Another dreaded Monday came for everyone and it became a regular sight to see Melissa walking into the staff room with a coffee from the shop across the street. The redhead sat down in her usual place next to Barbara who glanced at the coffee but said nothing. Everyone was wondering the same thing, but no one wanted to say it. Janine, brave as ever, decided to break the silence. “So… you must really like the coffee from the shop that Y/N runs right?” Melissa looks at Janine and then proceeds to look at the coffee cup. A soft smile appears on her face as her thoughts drift to you and all the moments the two of you shared over the past month or two. “Hello, earth to Melissa!” Janine says with a confused expression. 

Melissa looks back up at Janine. “Yea, she makes the best coffee I’ve had in a while,” she says hastily as she goes back to her grading. Jacob turns away from Melissa to mutter to Janine and Gregory. “The coffee’s not the only thing that Melissa keeps going back for..” Gregory snorted as Janine tried her best not to laugh. 

Melissa heard what Jacob said and she thought about it for the entire day. Sure, the coffee was amazing, but it definitely wasn’t the real motivation for coming to the cafe every single day. Melissa finally came to the realization that Jacob was right. The next morning, the redhead practically barged through the door and walked towards you. The sudden impact of the door startled you as you see Melissa coming towards you with an unreadable expression. You couldn’t help but feel nervous as she rounds the counter and kisses you. To say you were caught off guard would be an understatement, but not wanting to give the wrong impression, you kissed her back. After what seemed like forever, both of you pulled away and a comfortable silence filled the room. 

“Not that I’m complaining, but what was that for?” Melissa let out a light chuckle before deciding to respond. “What do you say to dinner at my place tonight, hon?” The smile you offer her gives Melissa the answer she’s looking for.

Suguru Geto: When The Villain Is Right

Villains can sometimes be the most loved characters in an anime but even if they are, it's always easy to understand why they aren’t right. But what happens when the villain is right? In this, I will be discussing the downfall of Suguru Geto and why he wasn’t /wrong/.

| | SPOILERS FOR JUJUTSU KAISEN SEASON 2; HIDDEN INVENTORY EPISODES | |

We’re first introduced to Suguru as a villain, in his first appearance he is Kenjaku, therefore, I will only be talking about Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (JJK0) and Jujutsu Kaisen Hidden Inventory (HI). Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel following Yuta Okkotsu who’s being haunted by his childhood best friend Rika. When we see Suguru in this movie he is a cult leader who hates non-curse users (whom he calls monkeys). I want to look at two members of his group, twins Nanako and Mimiko Hasaba. At this time both girls are 15 years old and shown to primarily be within Suguru’s general location. The reason why I specifically point out these two is because they hold more importance within the series than I initially gave them credit for.

Based on the time jump from JJK0 and HI both girls would be about 7 with what I will be talking about. Suguru’s first appearance during the Hidden Inventory episodes shows him as a student alongside Satoru Gojo and the other sorcerers such as Kento Nanami. The first few episodes feature Suguru and Satoru as they are tasked to protect Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel for Tengen. This version of Suguru is extremely different from the version we see later on as Suguru’s view of his power is that he feels a sorcerer's job is to protect those who cannot protect themselves. He takes his role seriously, believing there is a reason for this. When he and Satoru are sent out to protect Riko, they successfully ward off assassins up until Riko’s final moments. Suguru gives Riko the option for her future, she ultimately decides that she would like to stay with everybody but in an instant, she’s shot in the head by Toji Fushiguro. The man hired by the Star Religious Group to kill her. This is the exact moment that paves the path for Suguru’s later decisions. Riko Amanai is a 14-year-old girl who had been thrown into the Jujutsu World, this is something that Suguru thinks about. Upon retrieving her body he and Satoru come face to face with an extremely harsh reality.

Sorcerers are not cared about.

The members of the Star Religious Group are clapping and cheering for the death of a child. This is something that is shown to be very damaging for Suguru as he thinks of who he’s meant to be protecting. Why protect the people who may be just as bad as a curse itself for clapping over the murder of a kid? In the scene, Satoru asks if they should kill them but Suguru decides against it, stating sorcerers kill with reason. Suguru is dealing with an internal battle, shown by a pessimistic view of life. Suguru has a conversation with Yuki Tsukumo where he learns that curses are created by non-sorcerers and their emotions such as hatred (Mahito). Suguru is left with the realization that non-curse users like the members of the Star Religious Group are the cause of curses yet they’ll have no problem with the death of sorcerers or those who can use jujutsu despite being the people who can save them. This is made worse when a second-year student Yu Haibara dies on a mission. 

Suguru is sent on a solo mission to help a village that has curses, while there he is shown a cage that has two young girls in it. Those young girls are the previously mentioned twins Nanako and Mimiko who are about 7 or 5 at the time. With the knowledge of what causes curses, seeing these abused and scared little girls being caged up like animals set Suguru off to where he decides to kill not only the villagers but also his parents, with the new plan to eliminate all non-curse users to create a safe and in his eyes, perfect world. Now, I know after saying that his plan involved genocide having the title of this post saying that he wasn’t wrong may be a bit confusing so let me explain.

Suguru Geto’s plot is an example of somebody who had every right to become a villain. Becoming a sorcerer is signing away your life because, at the end of the day, death could be knocking at your door at any moment. Suguru isn’t a villain like Mahito who does what he wants for his own gain. Suguru is a villain but he cares for people, it is shown that Suguru was a caring person when both Nanako and Mimiko were willing to try and convince Ryomen Sukuna of all people to help which resulted in the death of the twins. Suguru was pushed to his limit after seeing that humans don’t care for what’s sacrificed for their lives, at least from what’s shown by the death of Riko Amanai. It’s easy to say that sorcerers are gifted the ability to know they saved lives but not many people would find that to be an award for everything they’ve done. From seeing people cheer for the death of a child to seeing children being locked up, Suguru just didn’t find meaning in his job in the end.

So yeah totally amazing episode all in all. I love how none of the main cast died (except those soldier guys. RIP nameless soldier guys).

The Doctor got a happy ending for once. I’m so pleased with the outcome. I’m happy to finally find out why he came back with 10’s face.

Day 8

Chap’s 21, 22, 23

ahh i know we’re only doing a few chapters a day but it feels like were simultaneously going so fast and also taking our time, it’s mad to me that we’re in the 20s now but i usually read up in less than a day

for lottie, someone who couldn’t necessarily afford fancy things when she was younger to get a bursary to rosewood where she would (i assume) be getting very fancy free food available 24/7, and then on top get a job where not only would she be getting paid, but she would also have all travel, clothes and non term time food just arranged for her?? that’s huge- like she essentially would never have to pay for anything essential, and would be able to buy other things she wanted too

“‘when you inevitable have to tell everyone that you’re, in fact, not the princess of Maradova’” let me just cry now thinking about how that happens

“‘we have to promise no more secrets’” that aged badly

it makes me so sad that lottie immediately wants to impress jamie, her self esteem in book 1 in general makes me really sad. especially as someone who really relates to lottie, and since i’ve done a lot of work to improve my self esteem it just breaks my heart when her go to attitude is to impress others as if they’re all inherently better than her

onto part two!

ahhh the insomnia phase. weirdly enough this is one of my favourite parts of all the books. it just seems to capture the everyday life, making it feel really beautiful while showing us it’s not perfect. idk something about it gets me

ellie waking up extra early despite not being a morning person just to keep lottie company is one of the sweetest things she does in these books

And YOU have absolutely NO right to say if I faked it or not or if my trauma isn’t “valid” in your eyes. Why? You weren’t there. You don’t know the severity of it.

And I’m not going to say that “you haven’t experienced it”, because maybe you have. But that does not give you other reasons to put down others.

nick’s been watching them all go around with the idea for the last five minutes, watching octavia, more unhinged than he’s ever seen, fighting with any of them that oppose the idea that she go back to where mbege & her had escaped. all so she can burn her brother’s body. he stands with fox, arm slung around her shoulder keeping her close because ever since the pair returned, everyone feels a little on edge.

“ i’m not asking! no one else has to go but i’m fucking going. ”  octavia shouted, unwilling to move on this idea. not willing to spend another night thinking about bellamy rotting out there. 

“ no one is going anywhere right now. ”  came styxx authoritative voice that usually can command a bit of resolve within the group but only adds fuel to octavia’s burning fire.

“ i’ll go too. ”  nick finally suggests, uncurling his arm from fox as he walks towards the group. his attention is mostly on styxx, sharing a knowing look with the other.  “  i’ll go with the two of them, keep them out of trouble. we’ll do what needs to be done and be back. ”   that seems to stun the younger girl but she still stands tall with her arms crossed in front of styxx, muttering something to the taller man that nicklas couldn’t catch before styxx shakes his head and agrees to their terrible idea.

we’re better together. nicklas doesn’t fight the smile that rises on his lips at the sight of the slight pout in fox’s lips before he crosses back to her. quick to stand much too close to her, always invading space like there’s nothing between them.  “  without doubt, i’m not saying we aren’t. ”  it’s true after this long in the apocalypse, nick would usually always choose to be with fox than without her. but this time is different.  “ you’re always saying we’re a group right? that we’re all each other has? ”  he asks, a hand coming to rest on her neck as the other tilts her chin towards him. crystal hues looked down at her, searching her face with a promise to be back.  “ i need to help her, fox. ”   nicklas says, knowing that fox more than anyone would understand. a loss like this? something so deep and severe can break people, he knows that because fox helped put him back together. if this gave octavia even an ounce of peace, well, she deserved to feel it. 

nicklas face swooped down, capturing fox’s lips in a deepened goodbye kiss. he’d be back as fast as he could, but separating from fox was never an easy task to do. so he savours their kiss as his thumb strokes her cheek. lips break from hers, but remain close enough to feel her breath against his lips.  “ i’ll be back, stay alert, ”  he tells her, kissing her one more time before he breaks away to back his supplies.

Rinnie shivered in her inefficient coat. It was better than nothing but the last hour had not done wonders for her body temperature in general.

“This is somehow colder than it was when we were walking to Trotsberg,” Riela mused. “And we were basically in a blizzard then.”

“Probably because it’s night,” Rinnie replied.

Riela shuddered. “That was not fun,” she said. “There was so much snow and we knew that if the storm picked back up again, we were dead.”

Rinnie pursed her lips. Naturally, she remembered none of this.

“At least we’re not camping out in the open tonight,” she said.

Riela let out a short, barking laugh. “You’re right, thank goodness. And we’d have to stop soon just to get some rest.”

Rinnie looked around at all of the injured. “There’s no way these people could push themselves more than a mile or two.”

“Don’t forget to include yourself in that,” Riela pointed out. “You’ve been casting left and right.”

“You sound like Nathaniel,” Rinnie told her.

Riela shrugged. “Honestly, you’re the most powerful mage I’ve associated myself with ever. I’ve seen you do some amazing shit, but I’ve also seen you passed out for half a day afterwards so.”

Rinnie smiled wryly. She’d heard Riela’s careful choice of words. Rinnie wasn’t the most powerful mage Riela had ever met. But neither of them wanted to be talking about Nidtrin priestesses right about then.

“Uh huh, sure you’re not an airship nerd,” Killian heckled.

Rin took a long pull of her vaper and blew the smoke in Killian’s face. Cherry. “Okay, so maybe I think they’re cool. There’s a part of me that’s always wanted to go from my hometown to Berthingtonn in five days.”

Killian grinned more. “Maybe I can convince the crew to take you as far as the Islands. You won’t make it in exactly five because we’ll have to stop in Himmelmauer, but it would be close.”

Rin gasped. “You know what that means?”

“What?”

“I can make it to my parents’ ceremonies,” she said.

“Then I’ll definitely see if I can extend that favor,” Killian said. “You deserve to go to that.”

Rin made an excited noise and offered her vaper to Killian. She didn’t let go of it, however. He rolled his eyes and put his mouth to the mouthpiece. He felt her spark of power and inhaled. Definitely cherry. Good though.

These are all from Cure the Queen (Book 3) since that’s where I could find the word CRISP anywhere. Also, CtQ has better cold vibes.

CLEAR

Rinnie jabbed herself with the glucose shot and followed it with one of Mica’s Go serums. She was forcing her body to do more than it was ever designed to do. This might be more than she’d ever asked it to do ever. Including med school.

If she wasn’t careful, she was going to burn herself out. But also she couldn’t stop either. They were too close. There was too much at stake.

But she couldn’t burn out either.

The mages who weren’t also theramancers were starting to get bruises on their arms where they were jabbing themselves. Rinnie noted that even one of the corpsman had a few bruises on his arms that weren’t healing yet. Her own skin was still clear. For now.

COLD

Rinnie made her way to where the washroom was at the front of the car, since economy only had the one, not two like first class did.

It was vacant when she got there, so she let herself in and did a double-take in the mirror. She’d seen her hair pulled back before, but the braids were something else. They made her look, somehow, younger. Her ears were incredibly prominent with her hair pulled away. But she relished the compliments that she’d looked nice, and like her father’s daughter.

You have no idea what the blood can do that runs in your veins…

The voice left chills rolling down her spine and Rinnie was quick to turn on the sink and splash cold water on her face. All things considered, that was not the worst thing the voice could have said. It was cryptic and made her think.

But she didn’t want the voice in her head anymore either.

You have been blessed, child. Come to accept that.

Rinnie fought the sudden desire to punch the mirror. It was time to get back to everyone else before she went bonkers by herself. She pulled out her hemp vaper and took a long pull to calm what she could of her nerves.

CRISP

Her telestone pulsed, interrupting her from reading a time-bending plot that she was hoping wasn’t going to be too predictable.

She was surprised to find that it was Cael calling, rather than Mistress Thea.

“And to what do I owe this pleasure?” she asked as she answered.

“There’s something wrong with Thea,” Cael answered.

“Skipping the pleasantries, I see,” Miera mused.

More importantly, however, she noticed how his voice sounded raspy. And his collar was sitting weird. She narrowed her eyes.

“What, exactly, is wrong with our Mistress?” Miera asked.

“I don’t have an answer to that yet, which is why I’m calling you back for help.”

“What happened to your voice?”

“Training accident.”

The words were too crisp, too practiced. It was the cover up for what really happened. Miera pressed her tongue up against the backs of her front teeth, thinking.

“I take it that you mean this isn’t some physical malady then,” Miera said.

Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible Chronological. I'm China. Today is the second day of October. Welcome. It is so great to be here with you today. Now I know this isn't my normal week to be be on here with you. Hopefully that is not hopefully it's not too devastating for you. Mom had read her week and then she read more than half of mine and so I just want to allow her body to rest and to heal as she is still walking through Bell's Palsy. And so I just want to allow her to rest and so I will be reading with you this week and I'm excited. So today we are in the book of Matthew, we are in chapter one and we are also in the book of Luke, chapters two, verse one through 38. And since it is a new week we will be switching up and we're going to be reading in the New International version this week.

Commentary:

What an incredible reading we have today and it is the Christmas story. I hope you all have your Christmas trees up. Man, what a beautiful story. I think the part that really got me was this man named Simeon who is told by the Holy Spirit you won't die until you have seen the Messiah and wow, what a way to be living in anticipation knowing that you're not going anywhere until you see the Messiah. I'm sure if you were to tell your friends or your family that they would probably dismiss you or I don't know, I'm not sure if people stood with him in that or if they really dismissed him as crazy or what. I'm not sure. But there was a part of me that was imagining what that would have even looked like to be such an old man who is of faith and of diligence and who has waited so long and is now holding little baby Jesus. And gosh, what a full circle moment that must have been for him. What a beautiful and powerful moment that must have been. And then also just reading about the angels showing themselves to the shepherds and when you think about kind of the fast forwarding to Jesus and him being in his thirty s and his life really kind of coming close to an end and people are accusing him because they didn't think this is who he would be or this is how the Messiah would be revealed or even how the Messiah would come. And I'm just thinking I'm not sure what the anticipated moment would have looked like for them. Would he have been born into like pilots or Herod's genealogy? But instead we read about where Jesus, where he came from. There's 15 generations between Abraham all the way down to Jesus and reading about how quite literally all of heaven rejoiced when Jesus was born and in the most humble of ways that he was. First off, he was born of a virgin. And what an immaculate way to come into Earth, to be born at all that is truly like, honestly, it just is a miracle, because life in itself is a miracle. And going through the whole scientific process of conception and for Jesus to be wholly conceived, and with this young girl and Joseph who's trying to figure out, how can we both walk away from this with our dignity and our lives, to where she's not stoned and he's not shunned for giving a certificate of divorce. But then again, Gabriel's got his work cut out for him and he comes and comforts Joseph and says, no, listen, I promise this is real. It's crazy. Nothing like this has ever happened before. And that's what I'm saying about these trailblazers, these pioneers, because this has never been done before. I don't know of any single other holy conception that is not partnered by two people, but just with the Holy Spirit. I don't think there has been anything else like that. And so to be the first, I'm sure wasn't all easy for Mary. And so these stories we read about them is they are foundational for our faith and what we believe and our gratitude for the Lord. And I feel like we can almost get desensitized by reading them, because we've read them so many times where I already know this, why do I have to read it again? But when we really slow down and read it, like, the life of Simeon stands out to us. And to think, wow, he waited in faith and he waited and he trusted and he really believed that he would see the Messiah. And I'm not sure that it happened in the way that he thought it was going to happen, but that didn't matter. It didn't matter that it happened or didn't happen in the way that he expected. What does matter is that it was holy and it was beautiful. And God fulfilled every single promise. Like, there was not one even little promise that wasn't fulfilled, even to the shepherds, to this man, Simeon. Getting to hold Jesus, who was probably just a few weeks old, and just thinking about that is crazy. And also just my heart goes out to Mary, who's new and postpartum, and the Bible says she keeps all these things close in her heart. It's like, yes. Mary, get a journal. Write all these things down in your sleep deprivation. 

Prayer:

God, I thank you for your word. I thank you for the goodness and the trueness of it, and even just the wonder and awe in the stories that we have read our whole lives, or maybe our whole Christian lives. I pray that there would still be that part of our hearts that is just in awe and reverence and wonder for who you are and how you have allowed things to be created to be. And I pray that our hearts wouldn't feel like, oh, I've already heard this, I've already read this, I know how this goes and that we wouldn't check out, but actually that we would press in further and deeper and find you. And I think that that is the truth of this whole year is that when we seek you, we find you. And so Lord, I thank you for your word and I thank you for your son and for the sweet birth story that we get to be forever changed by. And it is in your name we pray. Amen.

Anthony Albanese joins Chris Minns to open Qtopia Sydney

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined NSW Premier Chris Minns and a host of other politicians and dignitaries to officially open the Qtopia Sydney Queer Centre of History and Culture at a ceremony held at the National Art School in Darlinghurst today.

“This is a fantastic celebration for the LGBTIQ+ community and it commemorates how far we’ve come, during my lifetime, as a society,” Albanese told reporters at the event.

“From one where we were arresting people, locking them up for being who they are, into one now where we’re celebrating in the very same venue and that’s a great thing.”

“In 1978, dozens of LGBTQI people were arrested at Sydney’s first Mardi Gras,” Albanese also said in a statement.

“Today we’re opening the Qtopia Museum to honour their legacy. It tells the stories of people who have dedicated their lives to the campaign for equality.

“To be recognised as equal and celebrated for who they are and who they love. Their stories and this museum will inspire generations to come.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns also spoke at the event, later saying, “today’s a pretty special day.”

“We opened the first permanent museum of LGBTQI+ history in Australia.

“This place gives our state the opportunity to have one of Australia’s greatest stories told. And voices, who have been ignored – heard.

“It’s a story of underdogs, who fought against the system, who took on all odds – and changed the world. I want this monument to be a reminder to everyone in the LGBTQI+ community.

“It is a basic right to live life as you are – free from fear and hatred. This is for you.”

The opening was also attended by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch, Penny Sharpe MLC, NSW Minister for the Arts John Graham, federal and state Sydney MPs Tanya Plibersek and Alex Greenwich, along with many, many others.

Qtopia will have free entry on Sundays thanks to funding from the City of Sydney, while General Admission entry will be $15 on other days. Entry for Concession Card Holders and people aged 11-18 will be $10 while children under 10 will have free entry when accompanied by an adult.

Tickets can be purchased in advance via Humanitix and you can select a two hour window in which you would like to visit the museum between 10.30am and 4.30pm.

When was the last time you wore a full face of makeup? Probably my wedding day lol. I do wear make-up sometimes but generally there’s no point with what I do for a living.

Do you own an iPad? We have one lying around somewhere but it hasn’t been used for ages - I doubt it can even be upgraded or used properly at this point - it’s a very old one.

Does the thought of having wrinkles when you’re older upset you? No - I’d be pleased I’d reached an age where I was getting wrinkles. How often do you buy a new phone? Normally at the end of my contract, which is every 2-3 years.

Would you rather live in an apartment in the city, or a cabin in the woods? A cabin in the woods. Do you use Snapchat?  No. Is it even a thing anymore? lol.

Have you ever driven or ridden on a motorcycle? I’ve ridden on the back of one before, yeah.

Do you know anyone who’s struggling with addiction? Not anymore, the addiction took over and killed her.

Are any other members of your household home right now? Everyone’s home right now. Mike is upstairs with Layla, I’m downstairs with the dog on one side of me, and Purrlock on the other side - Toby is curled up nearby as well. It’s a rainy Sunday and we’re all feeling very lazy lol. What was your first job? And how long did you work there? Exactly the same thing as I do now lol. I was a dog-sitter - I did it on and off for a couple of years until the dog passed away.

What was your favorite school subject when you were in middle school? History and English.
