I've been itching to dive into something totally new and outside of my usual web dev comfort zone! After brainstorming for a while, I finally landed on a brilliant new project idea: building my very own desktop widget~! 

Now, full disclosure—I have zero idea where to even start when it comes to programming a widget, but that’s where the fun comes in, right? I’m all about learning new things (I have an addiction to studying so…)~!

In this post however, I’ll be sharing my initial ideas for the widget and brainstorming what tech stack might bring this amazing idea to life~! 

Prior knowledge on desktop widgets?

All I know is that they stick to the desktop area and some even always in front of the other windows. That’s all I know!

Widget Idea

So, the project idea I’ve chosen is something simple, just so I can get used to making widgets: a notepad. But, it’s not just any plain notepad widget—it’s going to have an aesthetic color scheme! (I know, pretty cool, right?) I really wanted to keep things basic for this first project.

The inspiration actually came from a Pinterest pin that I saved. I think the design is originally from a color palette generator website, but I want to take that concept and turn it into an actual desktop widget. Thus this project was born!

Tech Stack

Alright, I lied—I'm not entirely stepping out of my comfort zone for this one! I'll be using ReactJS, a technology I’m super comfortable with and absolutely love. But to keep things fresh and challenging, I’m diving into something new as well!

After researching (thank you, ChatGPT, Google, and YouTube), I found out there are plenty of ways to build a desktop application, or in this case, a widget. You can go with WinForms, WPF, Tauri (Rust), Qt, and others. But I wanted to stick closer to JavaScript—specifically something I could pair with ReactJS. So, ElectronJS seemed like the best fit.

For this project, my tech stack will be:

ReactJS (JavaScript)

ElectronJS (JavaScript)

SCSS (for those extra styling powers)

HTML (obviously)

Visual Studio Code (with a lovely brown theme 🧸)

Toward the end of the project, I’ll also explore how to package the widget so people can download and install it on their own computers, and how to store the notes locally!

i played some 'tavern master' and it really makes me think about how the vast majority of 'sim' games are just logistics simulators. this is a game about how to structure your tavern throughput to get your waitresses to efficiently take orders & bus tables. it's entirely about 'last mile' distribution of beverages and food. this makes how it totally doesn't care about anything before the last mile. click on a barrel and click 'refill' to instantly refill a barrel at any time. ditto with food supplies. but maybe the devs don't realize the game is all about waitress logistics because there's not actually any way to assign them to specific zones

when i was playing per aspera it was likewise very funny that a game all about constructing mines on mars didn't have any kind of dedicated shipment infrastructure. sorry, you can't make a train. it all has to be ad-hoc rover drone networks. you can make a 'hyperloop', though.

the source of the humor here is that... in real life so much of everything is logistics. empires have risen and fallen based on their ability to move things around. moving things from place to place is like 80% of all economic activity. i mean, i guess nearly 100% if you factor in how you can't really do anything with anything unless you have it, physically. video games are traditionally not very good at logistics mechanics unless they really wanna commit and be A Game About Logistics Management, because there's not really a lot of ways to high-fantasy up grain transport or w/e. (and the games that are all about logistics, like, transport tycoon or w/e, are usually still using very gamified mechanics like "you get paid more the quicker your deliveries are", which maybe makes sense for like, produce, but less sense for like, iron ore)

this was also kinda a big issue with uhhh endzone. that was a game where it was very easy for your logistics systems to collapse under their own weight. it's a very common failure mode in a lot of games: you get some bottleneck that doesn't get resolved and you don't realize until your entire manufacturing web collapses, and that's partially player error but also partially the game maybe not fully realizing how critical logistics management is to the game & giving the player tools to control that with the necessary fidelity over large systems

Dungeon Appreciation Post #3 - Mt. Gulg (Final Fantasy I)

I was looking for a dungeon from a game like early Final Fantasy, and in my memory of playing it, Mt. Gulg stands out to me. It has a great soundtrack, and the volcano must stand out to other people too, because the name and music have been re-used in other Final Fantasy games as an homage.

I just love the opening room. I like when dungeons take on the shape of the thing they're supposed to represent, especially when we're talking about games that use a limited tileset on flat 2D maps to represent them. This effectively evokes the mouth of a volcano, and you have to walk through the lava to get inside the mountain. This might be reading into it too much, but I don't think there's a version of the game where you can see the end of each safe zone (the wings on the spiral) until you take a few steps in. This is clever, as it makes you take a break, but also forces you to realize after a step or two that you have to backtrack into danger to proceed.

The next floor down opens into a pretty direct hallway filled with lava, with a large treasure-filled maze off to the side, and it is quite winding. One could take multiple excursions, fighting enemies (including some in the treasure chests to wear you down) to try to get a full set of armor and some weapons and gold, but on an attempt where you want to go straight down the hall, the path to the third floor checks your party's stamina somewhat on the way down.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th areas are long gauntlets of battles with no treasure in sight and tons of lava to filter you, just to make sure you can really take it before fighting the boss.

The 6th is a few interconnected hallways with rooms again, almost like little houses, but mostly containing gold and common items, but one storeroom out of your way contains the sword Icebrand and a Flame Shield together.

Then, the bottommost floor is built like a web of buildings, one containing Flame Armor, so it's cool to get a few fire-and-ice themed magic equipment here, and another has the boss, the Fire Fiend Marilith (or Kary).

In an RPG, it's often difficult to interpret random encounters as contributing to the story or lore, and easy to pass over the monsters as a bag of mechanics that don't have any deeper meaning, but it's fun to think about! With a design like this, you can ask questions about it like;

Why does there appear to be a city buried deep within the volcano? I mean, excluding the maze/storage on the upper level, there appear to be 14 different, unconnected small structures, which is more than a lot of the towns in the game, and they're all on the lower two floors.

Other than the more monstrous monsters (Dragons, Oozes, Worms, Elementals, etc.) that appear alone or in packs with each other, some of the mixed random encounters consist of Orge Mages and Ogre Chiefs, sometimes with Hellhounds and Hyenadons, but not other monsters, implying that the Ogres have a hierarchy and can domesticate other monsters. Do the ogres occupy the city in the volcanos depths?

Minotaurs and Hill Gigas (the other two humanoid monster types) sometimes appear with Scorpions and Lizards, respectively. Is something similar going on there?

Oh, another cool monster encounter detail! Sphinxes only appear on the top-level, implying they don't live inside the volcano at all, but only fly around the peak!

Who made the Icebrand and Fire armor/Shield? They seem useful for the denizens of the mountain to actually use (which I love for items), so who do they actually belong to?

See? Even a collection of random encounters and tiles can imply lore and worldbuilding, even if NPCs don't talk about it and you don't meet any NPC ogres in the game. It's up to your imagination, though, and I wonder how the original devs imagined Mt. Gulg.

I tried this blog thing almost a year ago, had some ideas, made some posts, but in the end, I ended up just giving up. It was hard to come up with stuff to intentionally talk about when you’re not a talkative person. I wanted to challenge myself, step out of my comfort zone, push my limits—all those generic things. I mean, I wasn’t expecting to have this big change or ultimately anything, but I at least thought it would make me more creative. Instead, it just made me more frustrated. Intentionally thinking about certain topics so retrospectively was just mentally exhausting. I’m used to having those moments as epiphanies in a completely sporadic nature. For instance, I saw a post about time and how it was relative specifically to individuals. As soon as I read it, I had a sort of “aha” moment, which led me to have this great conversation with myself—an internal think piece, if you will. Everything made so much sense—it was a full-circle, big-picture moment. Then I tried to recall that moment and put it into words with a post I called “Father Time” (a play on the K. Dot song “Father Time”), and it just went to shi…

Anyway, I’ve always wanted to code my own website ever since I was in high school, after I got a certain tech certification, but I just never took the big step to do it. Then I went to college for five years and abandoned any tech interest and the tech career that I eventually wanted. So I completely lost any web dev skills I acquired in high school, and now I’m back to square one. This is my first step in that direction: self-documentation.
