hii! do you have any information about what garbo liked to read? like favorite books/poems/plays/authors?
hello! yes, i actually do have some information! garbo once told close friends that she didn’t read the books on her shelves - and yet, she was known to recite poems by walt whitman (leaves of grass), and one of her favorite poets was harriet löwenhjelm.
she had a vast and eclectic personal library. among her books were works by poets such as edna st. vincent millay, john keats, esaias tegnér, heinrich heine, omar khayyam, and the complete works of manuel and antonio machado.
as for novelists and authors, she owned books by selma lagerlöf, oscar wilde, f. scott fitzgerald, alexandre dumas, erich maria remarque, tolstoy (resurrection and anna karenina), dostoyevsky, emily brontë, hemingway, james joyce, shakespeare, thackeray, goethe (iphigenia), sylvia ashton-warner (spinster), knut hamsun (the women at the pump), arnold bennett (the pretty lady), garrett mattingly (catherine of aragon), pierre benoit (atlantida), john vandercook (empress of the dusk), vita sackville-west (saint joan of arc), louis verneuil (the fabulous life of sarah bernhardt), laurence housman (victoria regina), remy de gourmont (a night in the luxembourg), vincent sheean, john gunther (meet soviet russia: book one), ferenc molnár (the captain of st. margaret’s), ruth laughlin (the wind leaves no shadow), berthold viertel (fürchte dich nicht / don’t be afraid), nathaniel hawthorne (the scarlet letter), roman rolland (beethoven: the creator), glenn clark (i will lift up mine eyes, the man who tapped the secrets of the universe), hermann rauschning (the voice of destruction), and albert barnes & violette de mazia (the art of renoir).
she also had a deep interest in theatre and owned plays by henrik ibsen, vita sackville-west, louis verneuil, and laurence housman - in addition to her shakespeare collection.
these were some of the books, authors and poets i managed to gather - she certainly had many more. her literary taste seemed quite eclectic, moving between the spiritual and the worldly, the classical and the modern, the intimate and the historical. there was everything from lyrical poetry to treatises on art, biographies of tragic figures, dense russian novels, plays with complex female protagonists, books on gardening, spirituality, cooking, languages like english, swedish and french. many of the works had dedications from friends - carefully chosen gifts. there were also volumes on personal development, aesthetics, art history and rare editions. you can also find more information about the books garbo likely read and recited on the garboforever website.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) was an American singer, guitarist and songwriter who pioneered rock and roll. Nicknamed the "Father of Rock and Roll", he refined and developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive with songs such as "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957), and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958). Writing lyrics that focused on teen life and consumerism, and developing a music style that included guitar solos and showmanship, Berry was a major influence on subsequent rock music.
Born into a middle-class black family in St. Louis, Berry had an interest in music from an early age and gave his first public performance at Sumner High School. While still a high school student, he was convicted of armed robbery and was sent to a reformatory, where he was held from 1944 to 1947. After his release, Berry settled into married life and worked at an automobile assembly plant. By early 1953, influenced by the guitar riffs and showmanship techniques of the blues musician T-Bone Walker, Berry began performing with the Johnnie Johnson Trio. His break came when he traveled to Chicago in May 1955 and met Muddy Waters, who suggested he contact Leonard Chess, of Chess Records. With Chess, he recorded "Maybellene"—Berry's adaptation of the country song "Ida Red"—which sold over a million copies, reaching number one on Billboard magazine's rhythm and blues chart.
By the end of the 1950s, Berry was an established star, with several hit records and film appearances and a lucrative touring career. He had also established his own St. Louis nightclub, Berry's Club Bandstand. He was sentenced to three years in prison in January 1962 for offenses under the Mann Act—he had transported a 14-year-old girl across state lines for the purpose of having sexual intercourse. After his release in 1963, Berry had several more successful songs, including "No Particular Place to Go", "You Never Can Tell", and "Nadine". However, these did not achieve the same success or lasting impact of his 1950s songs, and by the 1970s he was more in demand as a nostalgia performer, playing his past material with local backup bands of variable quality. In 1972, he reached a new level of achievement when a rendition of "My Ding-a-Ling" became his only record to top the charts. His insistence on being paid in cash led in 1979 to a four-month jail sentence and community service, for tax evasion.
Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986; he was cited for having "laid the groundwork for not only a rock and roll sound but a rock and roll stance." Berry is included in several of Rolling Stone magazine's "greatest of all time" lists; he was ranked fifth on its 2004 and 2011 lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and 2nd greatest guitarist of all time in 2023. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll includes three of Berry's: "Johnny B. Goode", "Maybellene", and "Rock and Roll Music". "Johnny B. Goode" is the only rock-and-roll song included on the Voyager Golden Record.
On March 18, 2017, Berry was found unresponsive at his home near Wentzville, Missouri. Emergency workers called to the scene were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead by his personal physician. TMZ posted an audio recording on its website in which a 911 operator can be heard responding to a reported cardiac arrest at Berry's home.
Berry's funeral was held on April 9, 2017, at The Pageant, in Berry's home town of St. Louis. He was remembered with a public viewing by family, friends, and fans in The Pageant. He was viewed with his cherry-red Gibson ES-335 guitar bolted to the inside lid of the coffin and with flower arrangements that included one sent by the Rolling Stones in the shape of a guitar. Afterwards a private service was held in the club celebrating Berry's life and musical career, with the Berry family inviting 300 members of the public into the service. Gene Simmons of Kiss gave an impromptu, unadvertised eulogy at the service, while Little Richard was scheduled to lead the funeral procession but was unable to attend due to an illness. The night before, many St. Louis area bars held a mass toast at 10 pm in Berry's honor.
One of Berry's attorneys estimated that his estate was worth $50 million, including $17 million in music rights. Berry's music publishing accounted for $13 million of the estate's value. The Berry estate owned roughly half of his songwriting credits (mostly from his later career), while BMG Rights Management controlled the other half; most of Berry's recordings are currently owned by Universal Music Group. In September 2017, Dualtone, the label which released Berry's final album, Chuck, agreed to publish all his compositions in the United States.
Berry is interred in a mausoleum in Bellerive Gardens Cemetery in St. Louis.

Embracing the mundane also means making sure that our solutions actually work for the people who need them. When I was attorney general of California, for example, and I went after the for-profit Corinthian Colleges, I was concerned about what would happen to students who’d been defrauded. The students had the right to transfer to another school, get their loan discharged, or get their money back, but the paperwork involved was quite complicated. Most students had no idea how to begin, or even that they had these options in the first place. We had prevailed in the case, but the students wouldn’t actually receive the benefit of the financial relief unless they could navigate the bureaucracy. So my office created a website that walked students, step by step, through this complex process. I wanted to make it as simple as possible for someone to exercise their rights and get actual relief. As we were developing the website, I’d often have our team show it to me, and I’d literally click through the process myself. More than once, I hit a snag. I’d tell them, “If I don’t understand it, how will the students?” That meant the team had to rework the interface and the text. But as frustrating as the exercise might have been, it resulted in a better product. Taking the time to perfect the details made the tool more relevant for the students who needed it. My point is: you have to sweat the small stuff—because sometimes it turns out that the small stuff is actually the big stuff. I read a story once about a principal at a St. Louis elementary school who wanted to take on rampant truancy in her school. When she talked to parents, she realized that many of the kids didn’t have clean clothes. Either they didn’t have access to washing machines or their families couldn’t afford detergent or the power had been shut off. Students were embarrassed to show up at school in dirty clothes. “I think people don’t talk about not having clean clothes because it makes you want to cry or go home or run away or something,” a student explained. “It doesn’t feel good.” So the principal had a washer and dryer installed at her school, and she invited students who had missed more than ten days of class to do their laundry on campus. According to CityLab, in the first year of the initiative, more than 90 percent of the students they tracked boosted their attendance.

The third F-15EX flies and the unit value of the fighter comes close to $94 million
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/29/2023 - 17:20 in Military

More than two years after the inaugural flight of the first F-15EX Eagle II, Boeing conducted the initial flight of the third aircraft of the type, this time in its final operational form.
The aircraft took off its inaugural flight before receiving the final painting, bearing a small serial number [20-0003] on the rudders. The plane is scheduled to earn its final colors and insignia before its delivery to the U.S. Air Force.

Boeing recently completed the first phase of the Integrated Test and Evaluation [IT&E]. Throughout this phase, the F-15EX participated in 19 Great Force Exercise events and interacted with 5ª generation aircraft. The plane marked the longest use of air-to-air missiles and confirmed the first F-15EX use of the launch of longer-range non-nuclear air-to-ground ammunition in the U.S. inventory.
The accumulated data are currently being examined by the Air Force Operational Testing and Evaluation Center and the Director of Operational Testing and Evaluation of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The information will influence the next phase of the project - called the full production phase. The Air Force expects the decision to be made public by the end of the year.
instagram
According to Donn Yates, executive director of Boeing Air Force Fighter and Trainer Business Development, six F-15EX are expected to be delivered in the time interval between the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023 and the first quarter of fiscal year 2024. Four of these planes will join the EX-1 and EX-2 at Eglin Air Base in Florida. The remaining duo is expected to arrive at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
The previously outlined plan involving the establishment of the Formal Training Unit [FTU] for the F-15EX at Kingsley Field is currently under reconsideration. The U.S. Air Force is currently evaluating the infrastructure and air space adequacy of the Kingsley Field for the FTU F-35.

The third F-15EX fighter when it left the final assembly line in St. Louis.
If the revised plan is approved, Seymour Johnson Air Base in North Carolina - currently home of the FTU F-15E Strike Eagle - will assume responsibility for the training of the F-15. Plans for the 142ª Wing of the Portland Guard National Air Base to become the first F-15EX operating unit in fiscal year 2025 are still being pursued.
The U.S. Air Force is modifying another plan, now intending to acquire only 104 F-15EX fighters, below the original 144. A contract valued at $3.9 billion with Boeing was finalized on September 28 covering the production of 48 new F-15EX Eagle II jets.
TAP TITLE BAR TO VIEW VIDEO ☝️
The new contract covers the production of four dozen jets over the next three years. In 2022, the U.S. Air Force bought six F-15EX jets for $80.5 million each, but the price has increased since then. This first batch of six-unit jets is being delivered now.
The flyaway cost - the production cost associated with the delivery of a ready-to-fly jet - for the first 12 of the 48 jets will be about US$ 90 million each, according to data obtained by the Breaking Defense website.
instagram
After that, the twelve jets that follow will cost about $97 million each. Deliveries of the next 24 jets, which will cost $94 million each, are scheduled to start in 2026, according to Breaking Defense.
In comparison, the cost of the Air Force F-35 stealth fighter variant is expected to average US$ 82.5 million each.

The unit cost per plane of the 104 aircraft marks a reduction of 5.24% compared to the Base Program for 2020, as documented by the U.S. Air Force acquisition reports. Boeing initially predicted that the unit cost would be US$ 80 million per plane.
A new cut in numbers would stimulate an increase in associated costs, similar to what is happening with EPAWSS. The AN/ALQ-250 Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System [EPAWSS], an electronic war and surveillance system that will be standard on the F-15EX, is being adapted on several F-15Es. But with the decrease in the number of modernized aircraft, the unit cost of the system has increased, recently leading to a Nunn-McCurdy violation.
Two F-15EX aircraft are currently being tested at Eglin Air Base.
Several technological improvements distinguish the F-15EX Eagle II from its predecessors. Possessing an innovative digital cockpit equipped with expansive displays and modern avionics, pilots receive greater situational knowledge and operational efficiency. A contemporary fly-by-wire control system increases maneuverability and relieves the pilot's workload. In addition, an updated set of electronic warfare reinforces its ability to discern and neutralize enemy threats.
The F-15EX Eagle II also offers several strategic merits compared to the older F-15 models. Its extended service life and reduced operating expenses increase its tax appeal to USAF.
Demonstrating a progressive mission system, the F-15EX Eagle II can perform an expanded scope of operational tasks. Its increased weapon capacity and varied weapon compatibility make it a highly versatile combat aircraft.

Every now and then I enjoy data diving and this graph is amazing!
I'm not saying it's right or wrong only that it is astounding to see such variations and it peaked my curiosity. I wanted to see if I could find more information on the subject.
I went to the original creators page, however; I couldn't find any resources or links other then "Source: Housing and Urban Development".
I went to the Housing and Urban Development government user's portal (HUDUser.gov) to see if I could find more info. The closest I could find (via a search) relating to this was this article:
https://www.huduser.gov/portal/publications/trends_hsg_costs_85-2005.pdf
Which provides a lot of information on trends for home owners and renters. I was able to find, within the article, this:
Which compared household incomes to rental costs. According to the chart "Monthly housing costs" (which appears to combine all costs in the chart) was between ~24% (1985) and ~26% (2005) of an individuals total income.
I struggled finding any further information on the site and thought I'd see if I could find a site that performed a similar research comparison.
Real Estate Witch
The closest I could find was data taken from an article by realestatewitch.com whom did an in-depth dive on this. They are a website that emphasizes transparency in rental/real estate. Richr backs them and I could find no major glaringly negative reviews about them.
Percentage Change of Income, Rent and Inflation
They have a similar graph and populate it by the percentage change (from 1985) for "Median Rent Price", "Income" and "Inflation".
Per witch, on their data:
For a measure of historical nationwide income, we use the St. Louis FRED’s Real Median Income measure. For historical nationwide rent prices, we use the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey Median Household Income measure, which dates back to 2009. For median rent values dating before 2009, we use the St. Louis FRED’s CPI Rent Index to approximate rent values back to 1985.
---
NOTE: It looks like rent values were not readily available pre 2009 so approximation data was used prior to this date (based on rent index's at the time)
This isn't exactly a comparison (to the original video) though as this merely states, for each of these three, what has their percentage increase been since 1985. It shows that the three have steadily increased since this time at a comparative rate. It does clearly show a more linear rise for rent and inflation though compared to income.
Percentage Change of Rent Vs Income
Their article also compares rent versus income to determine the percentage change between each of them during this time frame. They do come to the conclusion that rent prices, compared to income is far more stable (and has been outpacing inflation by 40% since 1985.) Income instability comes from a fluctuating economy and seems more prone to those swings:
According to this graph it looks like , for at least the last two years, rent has easily outpaced income (in percentage point changes at least).
Reliability?
Please note that while they mention their sources they too did not readily list links in their research articles (similar to the video above).
They go more into depth and also supply areas around the country for price examples. have a look:
Final note
Do keep in mind that data can always be laid out to fit a narrative.
I'm not saying either is correct; I merely wanted to see what data I could uncover. Both do point towards the whole "everything feels so G** D*** expensive." narrative as being relatively accurate.
I was really hoping to find a peer reviewed research paper on it but was not easily able to.
If you want to know why people have lost faith in capitalism, this might help

In Telangana's biggest Benami Act attachment, educational firm’s Rs 162 crore shares under income tax lens
The benami prohibition unit (BPU) of the income tax (I-T) investigation department in Hyderabad has provisionally attached shares worth Rs 162 crore, belonging to a company running an educational institution.
This is the largest attachment made under the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act in the Telugu states since the Act came into force in 2016. On March 20, the BPU issued a public notice regarding the provisional attachment of 16.2 crore shares (each valued at Rs 10) of Marredpally-based Calken Educational Services Private Limited. These shares are held by Botswana-based NRIs – Manhar Mooney, Gaurang Manhar Mooney and Dina Gaurang Mooney. According to the BPU, these shares are considered benami properties. The BPU has formally communicated with the Registrar of Companies, instructing them not to allow any transfer of the said shares until further notice.
The beneficial owners of these shares are identified as AM Emanuel, Ashish LW Emanuel, and Niharika Philomena Emanuel Lawrence. It is alleged that the Botswana-based NRIs hold the shares for the direct or indirect benefit of the Emanuel family.
The case involves the sale, transfer, and restructuring of immovable properties located in Bowenpally and Keesara, along with the infusion of share capital into Calken Ltd and the movement of substantial funds across multiple entities, which points to a benami arrangement.
Two key immovable properties – approximately 5.6 acres in Bowenpally and 3.7 acres in Keesara – have been owned by the Emanuel family for over three decades. They were leased to St Louis Educational Society, run by AM Emanuel and his family, which operates the St Andrew's group of schools using these properties for educational purposes.
The investigation revealed that although Manhar, Gaurang Manhar, and Dina Gaurang appeared as legal owners of shares in Oaktree Infra Developers Private Ltd and Calken Ltd, they had no actual authority or financial control.
Through a series of structured transactions – including the sale of immovable property, share value appreciation, and reinvestment into linked entities – the beneficial ownership remained with the Emanuel family, BPU alleged.
The BPU stated that this complex structuring appeared deliberate and designed to conceal the true nature of ownership in order to avoid capital gains tax liability. Under Section 2(9) of the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, a benami transaction occurs when a property is held by one person, but the consideration is paid by another for the latter's direct or indirect benefit.
The group's website clearly identifies Calken as a group company. Oaktree Infra authorised P Janakinath Sharma to execute the transactions and appointed him as a director. However, Janakinath received his salary from various entities linked to the beneficial owners.
In his social media profile, Janakinath declares himself as manager of accounts at St Andrew's Educational Services Private Ltd. A spokesperson for Calken Educational Services said, "The income tax department had earlier issued notices seeking information on our business activities over the past seven years, to which we duly responded. Subsequently, a show cause notice was issued on Feb 4, 2025, and we submitted a detailed response addressing all allegations.
However, without giving due consideration to our submissions, an order has now been issued, communicating the provisional attachment of the shares. This attachment has not been approved by the adjudicating authority in Chennai, whose approval is mandatory. Until such approval is granted, the attachment is neither binding nor effective. We are reviewing the order and will follow due legal process to present our case before the authority."

Lunch at Wat Promwachirayan
Sundays from 1030-6 from late fall until the end of March in St. Louis Park This temple offers a buffet! It was delicious and authentic. There were many hands at work to keep fresh food coming out. I saw several Buddhist monks coming in to enjoy lunch as well. Dressed in their traditional saffron robes. They were extremely busy when I got there at 1 p.m. If one does not sign up online, you need to wait in an overflow lot just to park and then they text you when you can move to the temple parking lot. Once you park at the temple, you get put on a waiting list for a table inside. I went with a friend, and we had to wait outside for about 35 minutes. Luckily, it was a warm day, and we enjoyed talking with people and being outside. There were people from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and India in line with us. Once we were inside the temple, we were sat at picnic tables close to other people. It felt very communal being in close proximity to others. It was much closer than American restaurants seat people. Some people who worked there spoke English well, while others were more difficult to understand. I had to get creative with my questions while navigating the menu options! Most people were very kind and patient when I asked questions, some seemed frustrated or got someone else to answer when we had a language barrier. In those instances, I felt awkward and thought they must feel that all the time being part of our culture. We ate the traditional Pho or beef noodle soup with Thai basil, lime, and cilantro as well as some other pork and fish dishes with vegetables. It was a fun experience, and we plan to go back before it ends.

If I was going to counsel someone of Southeast Asian descent it would be imperative for me to develop cultural humility toward them because they are the experts of their culture (Bui et.al, 2022). I want to show that I value creating a balance of power in relationships and will continue to pursue educating myself on their culture to create a safe space for them to grow and heal. I need to be aware of the generational trauma many of them have faced when coming to America from refugee camps as well as how they heal as a community. Culturally, they feel extreme levels of shame when a family member is experiencing these issues, so the family being supportive would be a very important part of successful treatment. When I read about men in Thailand experiencing alcoholism, it mentioned the reason they went to treatment was to learn to control their drinking not to quit. Many had used a form of treatment in a temple that utilizes Buddhist prayer practices and meditation along with herbs (Hanpatchaiyakul, et.al, 2014). This tells me that finding a method that they believe in and one that will be supported by their family is imperative for change.
In an article about Filipinos and treatment it stated,” Studies report that Filipinos are generally reluctant to open up to strangers because they believe that seeing a professional means they are crazy, and this will tarnish the reputation of the family, they prefer to seek help from family, friends, religious leaders and folk healers” (Hechanova et.al, 2018, p.3). When people in this study decided they wanted help sixty percent of them said their primary motivation to get sober was their family. (Hechanova,et.al, 2018).
