it’s very easy to tell the good satires and pastiches from the bad ones because the bad ones are too afraid to live within the form. like if you are doing work with fairy tales and you are refusing to look closer at the underlying logic and unspoken rules of what can seem at first to be a senseless form, you are not going to create meaningful work. to borrow a turn of phrase originally used by maria tatar, if you refuse to enter “the house of fairy tale” as anything more than a gawking tourist, you will miss the particular order to the way the table is set, the rooms that are locked vs the rooms that are simply difficult to enter, the set of the floorboards and the position of the furniture. whatever you build will then be a gilded imitation of how you believe the house of fairy tale ought to look, the table set according to your educated specifications and every door open. there can be no interrogation of themes from a writer who views the form as beneath them!

The thing that I find interesting to think on, is that Halsin isn't wrong about framing himself as old, even from an elf perspective. Not just operating under the framework that he's a survivor, and seems to have likely been the eldest in most groups he found himself in, so it's a habit to assume younger unless informed otherwise (especially considering he's the last of his line, and suffered through the deaths of his similarly aged fellows and elders during the Shadow Curse), and not just operating under the premature maturation that seemed to stem from this, thus him likely feeling older than he really is.
No, he's just stuck in 2e DnD lore (which considering that is what BG1 and 2 utilized, he's not technically incorrect to be, as he would have hypothetically been alive in canon during that period of time - consider it as a generational gap in thinking what constitutes as "old", and how previous generations aged or viewed aging compared to current generations):
Tumblr media
(Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition: The Complete Book of Elves, pp. 37 Table 4)
[Info: A chart taken from the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Rules Supplement, indicating the age ranges of various types of elves, including Aquatic, Drow, Grey, High and Sylvan. A section of the chart is highlighted in reference to Sylvan elves. Sylvan elves are listed as being considered at venerable age by age 325+]
According to this chart, Halsin - by other elves' standards - would have been considered to be in "Venerable" territory, which is usually applied to those who are afforded a great deal of respect, particularly due to length of experience or age. And Halsin being in this category further informs his physical appearance, as according to the same manual:
"Only at venerable age do elves begin to show their years, yet they still appear younger than most humans do at age 50." (pp. 37)
and
"[At Venerable Age] the elf, at age 350 [on average] or older, begins to show signs of age. Wrinkles start mapping her face. Her physical condition deteriorates still further, but her knowledge and her wisdom continue to grow even greater." (pp. 39)
Which could partially explain *why* he refers to himself as old; by all technicality he's earned the right to do so.
And while the 5th edition of DnD does nuke this specificity of lore in favour of opening the floor to more creativity, and this is by all means technically outdated, it's still interesting to take previous lore into consideration in how it might inform choices and characters.

Re about Cat :
Tumblr media
In Nopes she complains because her dad asks her to lend CoS troops, instead of asking Dimitri or Rhea herself...
But unless Count Charon is as dumb as Leopold, he knows pretty well Cat isn't the one who can lend him Church soldiers.
Of course Fodlan dgaf about non students characters, especially if they are affiliated to the Church, but I wondered, maybe Count Charon didn't want to ask Rhea herself to lend him some troops because he has a strange relationship with her -
Rhea is, after all, the one who welcomed his daughter when she was hunted by the Kingdom and the reason she's alive, Dad!Charon, whatever was his position during the "Cassandra hunt" wasn't the one who protected his daughter, Rhea was.
Maybe he feels already to indebted to her to even ask her, in person, for more soldiers?
As for Dimitri...
I always found it disappointing how both game never explored more Cat's backstory, ffs if Faerghus was "feudal uwu", the Crown (even if it was during Rufus' regency) ordered Cat's death, she was branded a traitor and someone who commited regicide ffs.
What was happening with House Charon at that time, were they happily going to give their daughter to the crown, when Catherine was the presumptive major crested heir, to have her executed? When the entire Kingdom branded her a traitor and had her name besmirched, was House Charon totes okay with, you know, the accusations that their precious heir participated in the plot to kill Lambert?
Lonato throws a fit because Christophe was executed by the Church, but Lonato is only Rowe's bannerman - Charon is one of the major Houses in the Kingdom, wouldn't they have thrown a "larger" fit if the crown wanted to execute their heir??
Or maybe that could fell in the larger "the Kingdom was in chaos" thing - House Charon might have been "this" close to rebel against the Crown ?
In a way, it might explain why Garreg Mach wasn't visited by the Kingdom's forces asking Rhea to hand Cassandra over if the crown's forces had to cross Charon territory to reach Garreg Mach...
So in with this BG, it would make perfect sense why Count Charon wouldn't ask Dimitri for more soldiers (granted we're talking about Church soldiers?) - Charon is still a loyal bannerman who fights for Faerghus, but his trust in the crown would have been severed, and it's up to Dimitri to rebuild that bond.

He's leaned back against a nearby wall, arms crossed in his signature fashion as he observes his surroundings. The letter instructed him to wait here for a meeting. Someone apparently had something they needed to speak with him about, so here he was. Just as he was figuring it some sort of prank, he turned when he heard footsteps approaching.
"Is someone there? I dare say you've kept me waiting long enough "

So Lubelle’s implication that Cecil’s worldview is fucked up feels very much like the early fan theories that Nightvale is all in Cecil’s head. Don’t know if that’s the direction they’re actually going with this, but it feels relevant. Anyways that’s my 2 cents this episode.

Serpentine eyes gaze down at the city streets below, watching as people do their last minute shopping in anticipation of tomorrow. He's not a great lover of chocolate and other sweet treats most people are into at this time of year - he can smell them in the air even from as high as up here but tomorrow he's got a fruit basket to look forwards to, his biggest meal since the year began, along with a delicious steak and plenty of treats for the other snakes in his care.

Complete sidenote though as I flip through my "small things that bring me joy" notes to cope with my various woes
The more I draw my versions of Ghirahim, the more PoC-coded I make him. I should continue doing so even harder tbh. If he was human I'd depict him as brown. He's cultural representation Barbie to me and I'm putting him in every outfit. Per a conversation last night, Ghirahim is a Ship of Theseus to me. The planks I'm replacing are his nose and hair texture and skin undertone though.

Hmm wondering if I should share random thoughts I've had of the Welcome Home world... the inescapable horror of being known met by the gentle hands of beings beyond yourself.. influence thousands without being part of their world.. self aware in a fabricated world, knowing you too are part of the fabrication..
Worry not, I'm just being silly. But I do think it's quite fascinating @:p
