Hi guys, I don't know if I've ever said this before on here, but I was in color guard when I was in high school. Not only that, but I was a part of the scholastic a division in the WGI's during Winter guard, performing 'Bold'.

It's been several years now, I don't even remember the exact year I performed. (I think 2017 but I could be wrong on that.)

If you don't know what Color guard is, it's a performing art usually mixed with marching bands that dance, spin flags, toss rifles (fake wooden ones), and sabers. It's something that I loved back in high school, at least my first year.

Finally starting to accept and get better on my trauma caused in fall season marching band my second year, I decided to search up color guard groups in my area and found out there was an age limit for not only the independent A class, but the Open class as well. That age limit is next year for me, so I wouldn't be able to go in next year, but I absolutely need the time to get back in shape and get the funds for it. I don't even know if I'd be able to go into this next year either (I'm also looking for non-competitive groups as well, but the only one in my area (That I can find) still has the color guard director in it from my second year in my school's marching band, so I can't join that one. Even if I had one more year, there's no telling that I'd be able to join, since I don't know if I'd be able to afford it. I can't start off with a higher level, because of how long it's been.

The point of this post: There are so many reasons why people can't join color guard until after these age limits. Fees, travel, responsibilities, health and so much more. I couldn't bare go into the sport that caused me so many troubles. That caused me so much heart ache and loss, despite the fact that I loved it so. I still haven't fully worked through it because of how much I lost. And because of that, I won't be allowed to perform competitively, if I'm ever able to look at my flag without getting flash backs. There's similar reasons for others too, and more reasons, but frankly even if those reasons didn't exist it would still be unacceptable. We should be openly welcoming performers of all ages, so long as they're able to safely perform. We should be welcoming new people, not driving them away. Not disappointing people who wanted to but couldn't, maybe they finally got into a good place to be able to perform, just to find out that they just barely don't fit the age limit. It's crushing.

So that's why I've signed this incredibly old petition. I know there's a chance that it won't change anything at all, even if it gets all of it's signatures. But I want to be a part of the voices fighting for people who want to participate. For poor 16-17 year old me who wouldn't find the drive to for the next 4-5 years. Maybe even longer.

If you don't want to, you obviously don't have to. This just obviously means a lot to me and I hope that things will change. That I'll be able to perform again.

But I know that their tarp was orange and blue and was patterned to have blocks with the perception that they were moving downwards (like stairs). I know that during the actual show, dancers do somersaults and it looks like they’re falling down the stairs

I am really excited for this magazine spread project. As previously mentioned, I am covering WGI Sport of the Arts. For my mood board, I have collected some photos for a potential collage or some cutouts on my spreads. I have also included a blue and green color scheme. I chose this color scheme because they are in the WGI logo. I am going for the pop-art, wild colors, paint strokes and funky patterns theme for my design.

I’m still very undecided on what typography I’m gonna use, but I have narrowed it down to a couple different fonts. I’m going for a paint-stroke feel, but I’m also wanting it to be cohesive with the WGI logo’s font. I just want it to scream “creativity” and “art” because that’s what WGI Sport of the Arts is about. It’s about individuals expressing themselves.

I’ve also thought a lot about throwing in some rainbow color strokes here and there, because a lot of the colorguard community is LGBTQ+, so I think that would be a really nice message to send to the readers because WGI has made it very clear that they will not tolerate any hate towards members of different backgrounds and sexual orientations.

My interests are wide and varied. I get into things very hard core, and what is sad, is that usually my friends/people with similar interests usually only cross over into 2-4 categories, and almost never even all of those sub categories.

And just because 1 thing I like seems completely opposite or unrelated to the other, doesn't mean I am less of a fan or less passionate about anything else.

Anime/manga, subcategories

Sports anime

Psychological thrillers

Popular shonen-style, adventure or fantasy anime

Finding new anime of all sorts of random genres, including shojo, variety, and others.

Also under this category: super hero and comic books/web comics since I like them, but am no where near the fandom for any, and are a very minor interest compared to others.

Sports:

Football: see college and NFL football. I also play flag and powderpuff

Baseball: mostly MLB, but holy FUCK the dodgers are in the world series and I can't shut up about baseball. I also played for 6 years in an all male league.

Hockey: I live with a Canadian. I also went to the Stanly cup playoffs in May. Out of my "favorite", "professional" sports, I know the least about it, but I still love watching and have MY team, as well as other teams I respect and root for.

Basketball: I'm not a huge fan, but i have my teams, and I am very excited for our college basketball season because games are free and we are ranked for the first time since the 90s

Figure skating: see last post. I've literally watched figure skating since I was 8-9. I know way more about the sport than I let on, ever try to explain to anyone.

I just fucking love sports??? Like once the Olympics come around, that will be all I ever talk about. God help me for 2020 with the summer Olympics.

Performing:

Color guard: I have done it for 7 years, I use it as my pageant talent, I choreograph constantly and I still keep up with wgi and dci. Plus, if I end up working as a counselor in the future, I will probably also work with my schools color guard.

Music: I did choir for fucking ever. I was in a band. I was also in band/orchestra. I know how to read music, I've judged festivals. I still perform a lot. Don't even get me started on my music listening choices.

Dance: I choreograph so fucking much. I'm not the best, but I still do it a lot and I am in awe of other choreography and can watch dance videos for hours.

Theatre/musical theatre: Jesus h Christ I am literally in a theatre honor society. I perform every month. I watch shows almost every week. I pay to see shows almost Every week. I do auctions. I read plays. I listen to hella Broadway.

Pageants:

I compete in pageants.

Not very seriously, and I've only won one, but I will defend the miss America organization on my death bed.

I have won scholarships and it has encouraged me to be healthy and I have had an amazing time even when I haven't won.

I've improved interview skills and public speaking

I've done more volunteering and figured out my own passions

Like it literally directed me towards my major in social work and why I want to work at a children's hospital.

Plus I like getting dressed up and crowns, okay?

Hair and makeup:

One of my favorite things I do every day is my hair and makeup

I love high end makeup even though I haven't bought any in a HOT MINUTE cuz I'm poor

I teach other people how to do their hair and makeup, and I do it for photography and modeling on other people.

I have a Look™, and I swear to god if I don't win Best Hair at Alphies for APO I will riot.

LGBTQ issues:

Guess what? I'm a queer woman

I care about advocacy and lgbtq issues and rights

I help advocate for HIV and aids research

I'm fucking woke and talk your ear off about invlusivity and intersectinality.

I hate having to explain that just because I am high femme doesn't mean that I'm not queer

I also HATE having to distinguish between being "fake gay" (not having been with a girl) and being a real bi/pan/queer/not straight person because I have been in relationships with multiple genders.

No, you’re okay!! A guard competition is for winter guard, which is an active sport that involves dance, tossing rifles/sabres and flags, ect. It’s got its whole community, which is amazingly huge worldwide. Look up WGI on YouTube and watch something from Lexis or Pride of Cincinnati (which my aunt is an instructor for- they always win worldwide championships). It’s great to be a part of!
