frfr, idk how people abandon their pets. i’m literally so attached to every animal ever. i see a stray cat at a park and i’ll think of them forever and worry about them too. and people who don’t spay their cats and expect them to be outdoors are such assholes. i’ve had to spay/neuter 10+ cats due to overpopulation in the last two years and i have four more females to go (excluding my own 8 out of 9 cats). it’s insane and so so so sad. the fact that they took off the collar is so stupid too. it really sucks. i cannot comprehend.

star, idk how you do it!!! living where you live in the kpop era must be so hard😭 like, we love the exposure but my bank doesn’t. i sometimes wish i lived somewhere with a lot of kpop concerts but kinda not at the same time bc i just know i couldn’t afford most of them and i’d get the worst case of fomo. i wish you the best at your choice of concerts😂

frfr ive never been confident with myself (and ik that’s like my biggest problem bc confidence is so attractive). kpop beauty standards kinda took a toll on me especially after my surgery, grad school, depression worsening etc etc. but ive learned to make delulu my solulu and be like “minho would love me even if im not pretty or skinny” and all is well (what he wouldn’t love about me is that i only eat meat when i absolutely have to bc i hate it😂). i love skincare though so if you ever need to discuss skincare im ur girl🔥 aside from kpop, plushies & cats my ocd also manifests at compulsively buying hundreds of dollars of skincare products🔥

I don't think I've ever heard any flack for What's New Scooby Doo. Like of course there's some questionable depictions of certain people, but keep in mind this was just a little before people really started being vocal and before the internet became really wide spread

Like just a few things

1. The animation quality is so good for TV that it holds up better than some newer shows today

2. They actually bothered to update the gang's outfits in subtle ways that match the 21st century

Daphne and Fred are immediately noticeable, and both lose the ascots. Velma is a bit harder to notice, but she does have a different skirt and a sweater with longer, thinner sleeves and a looser collar. Shaggy... well tbh he just has different shoes, but his look has always been timeless. And Scooby is a dog, so he's not really gonna get anything, but he's still a gr8 boi.

3. The music was very much for its time, filled with punk rock and similar era style songs, but it holds up so well. They got Simple Plan to do the opening! It was so good! Not to mention the chase songs were always bangers

4. The writing was pretty par per course, but the characters were still themselves and not forced to be completely different people like today's standards. They were experimented with a bit to spice them up- Daphne understandably having a ton done to make her more than a damsel in distress, but overall it was still respectful and believable while not making them a complete bitch (like modern Velma). The gang were actually friends and had fun, non annoying personalities too.

It very much like they just evolved the original Scooby style without at all being cynical of the source material.

We need to get this era back- maybe with more modern sensibilities so as to avoid stereotypes that were still used. Something in this style, modern outfits, this style writing and characterization, and with modern music (no not like Be Cool)

So I just saw This Pyropes Fanart(It's Gr8: Plz Look at It) and, for whatever reason, THIS was the time that, thinking about them, it occurred to me that there's something Really Interesting going on with their names like:

We know that Terezi, at least, claimed Redglare as an ancestor, and Latula sees her as an alternate version of herself, and they're obviously all "related" in some sense as their culture defines it because 1)they all have the same symbol and 2)they all have the same type of lusus. But Terezi and Latula have "Classical" names and Redglare has a "English" one(And HALF of the Ancestors do, now that I think about it: Dualscar, Mindfang, Highblood, Redglare, Handmaid, Darkleer).

I don't really know what to do with this other than to point out that:

canonically by the time of Karkat and his crew this "English" linguistic tradition seems to have been excised from Troll society, and

with the exception of the Condesce it seems to have been a middle- and upper-class thing? Like: all of the "lowblood" ancestors have latin-derived titles(we never learn their names) and the "English" naming starts at Teal.

Which is interesting cuz I've typically headcanoned "Classical" elements in Troll to be historically upper-class and the "Vulgar/English" elements to be historically low ala our own society, but this naming thing seems to suggest it might be the other way around(of course there could have ALSO just been, like, an era where having "land-dweller" names was fashionable)? So when the trolls say something partially "Vulgar" like thermal hull instead of the wholly "Classical" Refrigerator, they're trying to be Fancy???

he needed to get rich fast cuz his family was also unaware of how close to bankruptcy they were. i wouldnt say he liked being the token black person more than he liked the power n psychosexual performance of controlling what these rich white men have sexual access to. “the product was desire” his modern self says. and he was the plug. re: his fixation on acquiring the fairplay salloon in ep1-2 is motivated by that & etc etc etc. ep1 when lestat is like “u made me buy a townhouse in the quarter” louis is like “i know men of my race look the same to u ppl but i aint sell u no house” & as soon as he becomes a vampire in ep2 he kills the assessor (?) for calling him a “good negro”. lestat is a french white man he knows little about here other than this guy has more things than me & hes feeling up on lily while staring at me. i wanna be him , kill him, and REDACTED by him. it unnerved him bc lestat was likening him to lily in that moment of sexual tension. translating lestat’s sentence, snarking at him off the jump, then being mesmerized by him not to put my ship goggles on [for a canon ship ik lol] is a rly gr8 way to set up the lxl dynamic n how louis operates. show louis is someone with sum i deem interpersonal racial pride. he interacts with his particular black classed community of his era n shows a perfectly respectable face in the eyes of the black church, his baby sister w the tickets up the garvey line, but everybody know where that money come from& r perfectly fine eating off its benefits. louis strategizing to get ahead at the expense of the black ‘collective’ outside of his immediate network. claudia would be someone outside of that as a poor black girl. shes the type of girl louis couldve .. well. lets just say, the fact that louis saved claudia in the midst of the race riot n losing his family , their shared tie of being made immortal by lestat & decades of living with lestat brought this temporary show of solidarity in the murder plot btwn lou+clauds that otherwise may have not have been there had claudia & louis met in a diff situation n show potential to go a lot of places in parts of s2 when lestat is out the picture. anyways. louis is not a self loathing black man n he hates being the token, but he was hardly a paragon of racial solidarity in s1. n he was always aware that his privileges were extremely conditional & dependent on how much of himself he was able to comparmentalize in situations where he did not have the upper hand and had to put aside his pride. what better to set up a certain kind of person whod favor eternal life, than a suicidal bougie boule opportunist of a black gay man whos aspects of himself all existed on different bookshelves.. who had to lie about his family’s financial condition to them, who tries to maintain this double life even with newly bestowed immortality. hes not grovelling at tom or fenwick’s feet, he plays the game to stay afloat but despises having to smile in their face. thats why when hes a vampire & the laws r discriminating against him hes so much more transparent in showing how he feels about them. all that pentup aggression he felt as the only black man in those rooms is the fuel for why he gored fenwick& ripped up toms jaw. i think 1x01 louis was actually at a breaking point but 1x02-beginning of 1x03 b4 the vampire starvation shit louis was rly feeling himself when the dough was rolling in. he has the fairplay salloon, he has lestat, he can ‘control’ what white people have sexual access to. but all that crumbles…

Favorite color(s): I love blue. Like my favorite shade I think would be royal blue I can't figure out what the actual name is when I try to google because they've got 12 different blues labeled the same thing. But it's this blue (below is holo taco's royal tea blue.) Which is almost the color my hair is RN and it's my favorite. I also love berry shades, especially when they're deeper. Throw a little bit of green in there, it's like. God-tier combo. (But also I love grays. I just got a Poison shirt that's blue and gray and green and it's fucking gorgeous.)

Last film/tv show I watched: Eras tour (if that doesn't count then Aladdin this morning.)

Sweet, spicy or savory? I love savory. I can handle spice in my mouth but my tummy fights it bad later so just something savory is what I usually go for. (RIP to when I could eat 2 packs of chili ramen in a day and didn't pay for it for 2 days. 😭)

Last book I read: I finished Electric Idol last night after starting it like. Fuck, early last year??? It took too long to read because I couldn't focus. I also have like 3 or 4 other books started and I'm going to force myself to finish another one of them before I read Bride by Aly Hazelwood, which is the book I am the most excited to read right now.

Looking forward to: Going to bed. I need sleep, lol. Also the rest of my weekend, I really want to feel good enough to get some writing done.

ok, thoughts on the new doctor who episode now i’ve had time 2 let it sink in a bit!! 🥳

first of all, that was fucking brilliant!! definitely the most i’ve enjoyed a new doctor who episode in a while, and i’m so glad jodie got to have a good send off, apart from some wonky writing i’ve rly enjoyed her portrayal of the doctor, and it’s what she deserves 🥹

but it’s hard to say that without also saying that it’s frustrating in a way, cos it goes to show that chris chibnall rly Can write good doctor who.. so it’s a shame i haven’t enjoyed all the rest of his era that much, like it could have been So good if it was all on that level!! like, i haven’t Hated this era, but it’s just disappointing how it didn’t all fully live up to it’s potential 😔

but onto the good stuff: first off, dan’s departure was done v well, it felt v realistic for him to leave after that, and i suppose it was never gonna be the biggest thing in the world cos he hadn’t been a companion for long 😅

altho one more negative, again, dan’s departure after just a few episodes did So much more for me than when ryan and graham left, and they’d been companions for 2 whole series?? like their departure was just.. so flat to me, and even after 2 series i still didn’t feel emotionally connected to them all that much 😬 but yeah, ugh, that’s not rly got much 2 do w/ this episode 😭

ace and tegan’s return was handled rly well, and it was great to see them back!! i was a bit worried like, with So many characters in this episode that it’d feel too bloated and messy (like some of the other episodes this era w/ too many characters in 😅) but no, it worked well, and was all i could ask for!!

storywise, it was Incredibly fun, which is what i want most from doctor who, and also well paced imo, much better than some of the frenetic flux episodes, and the trainwreck of “legend of the sea devils” 😭

the master was fantastic, as he has been in all his episodes, sacha dhawan was Genius casting and i hope we get to see his master again someday

peter davison, colin baker and sylvester mccoy returned was leaked months ago, so i wasn’t surprised by their return, but it was still a joy to see them back, especially w/ 5’s interaction with tegan, and 7’s with ace 🥺

david bradley returning as the 1st doctor was a surprise tho, and so was fucking PAUL MCGANN??! 🤯 i will Never not want more of 8 🥹

the only one minor criticism i do have is the doctor’s death wasn’t.. anything especially special?? 😅 i’m not even fully sure what happened, the master had a remote control that.. turned the laser to blast at her i guess?? but still, not that much of a biggie 🤔

yaz’s final scene with the doctor rly hit the mark too 🥺 i wasn’t sure exactly how they were gonna get her to leave satisfactorily?? but nope, that did it!! and it’s always open for her to return one day, which is nice 😌

it was also nice seeing graham again, even if i didn’t enjoy his departure before that much!! and his scene w/ ace and the psychic paper in the volcano was gr8, they had a surprisingly good dynamic in that little scene 😭

i wonder where ryan was tho?? i thought he was rumoured to be in it too, but nope, not in it at all?? 😧 i wonder if tosin cole was just unavailable or s/t??

and that support group scene!!!! mel!! jo grant!! ian chesterton!!!!! fantastic they finally managed to get william russell back, considering he’s 97 now 🥹 obviously a little fanservicey cameo fest there, but it’s still always so nice to see classic who companions back again 🤧

so finally.. the regeneration into tennant?! 🤯 i called it about 7 months ago, when it was first rumoured david tennant was returning that it was gonna end with “what?? what?! WHAT??!” 😅 but what’s interesting to note is that after the episode aired, the bbc posted an article saying he’s actually gonna be The 14th doctor, and ncuti gatwa will be the 15th?? 😧 so that’s a surprising development, i’d assumed ncuti was gonna be the 14th, and david was just gonna be like, an unnumbered doctor, just around for the specials?? but then it looks like ncuti is gonna be in the specials too so..?? lots to think abt there 😳 just a shame they’re so fucking long away, i was hoping there’d still be a christmas/new year special, and the other 2 specials would then be spaced out over 2023 😔

and.. that’s abt all i think, or at least all i can think of rn?? might add more if i think of anything else, but all in all, rly enjoyable and a gr8 final episode for 13, which i’m rly happy abt!! 🥰

Hi animal anon!! sorry I'm so late replying to this lol I've been kinda stressing about a recent job buttttt i am actually incredibly excited about midnights! for some reason I totally thought it wasn't coming out until friday night but the fact that it's actually tonight?? I am very hype now.

one of my favorite part of release week definitely includes seeing new photos from the shoot and learning more about the vibes of the album through that. especially since i am absolutely looooving the midnights photoshoot. like the outfits and hair + makeup looks for this era have been sooo fantastic i am in love with every new photo.

oh and also the fact that we get to see her so often in the weeks leading up to release!! the tracklist reveal was a great idea and i loved seeing all those gr8 looks (and also meredith my beloved). like everything about the chaos of release week is just so fun tbh, like seeing new content pop up such as promo vids for spotify, the teaser trailer during football lmao, it's all just so chaotic and fun, i love it ❣️

so i'm thinking of reading some star wars novels and i'm pretty sure i've seen you talking about them so do you have any recs or instructions on how to read them? there's just so many. also ignore this if i'm totally wrong lmao

i love star wars novels sm!!! here's my very long breakdown under the readmore.

for starters, there are two main types of books

canon: anything published after disney purchased star wars. first canon book was released in 2014. occasionally small details from the books are retconned by new tv shows/movies but everything else is considered canon.

legends: anything published before disney purchased star wars in 2012. not canon but the new content often takes ideas from these books. before disney took over, there weren’t many rules for star wars books, so a lot of legends books contradict each other.

i’d also say it’s important to note that the canon YA books are usually on par with the adult books, so don’t skip them!

i mostly read the canon books so that’s what i’ll focus on but there are some gr8 legends books out there, and you’re way more likely to find legends books at your local used bookstore.

as for the correct order, some people might read them by following the in-universe timeline but that’s definitely not necessary!

here are some of my favs / good ones to start with!

lost stars by claudia gray. follows two kids from a small outer rim planet that bond over flying and eventually join the imperial academy as pilots. it’s the /perfect/ starting spot because its centered around the original trilogy with an atmosphere + events we know, but with OCs who allow us to get a new POV….and there are small cameos from some gr8 characters. it’s a BRICK but i finished it in like 24 hrs bc i couldn’t put it down.

leia: princess of alderaan by claudia gray. maybe i’m biased bc i’m super interested in the formation of the rebellion and the organas are my favorite family, but this book is so well done. it follows 16 yr old leia as she juggles being a junior senator + a princess. she also starts to discover the secrets her parents have been hiding about how deeply they’re involved in the rebellion. it’s a great look at young leia, but it also gives us a really good look at bail + breha organa as well as mon mothma. similar time period as ‘andor’ so it might be a good read before that comes out next month!

bloodline by claudia gray. takes place ~25 yrs after the original trilogy and ~5 yrs before the force awakens. this is the perfect sequel to #2. it gives us a glimpse at what leia has accomplished with the new republic while also showing its faults which lead to the rise of the first order. IMO, perfect mixture between plot + character driven.

dark disciple by christie golden. if you’re a fan of clone wars, this is it!!!! this was originally supposed to an eight episode arc but it was abandoned after the script was writen (by katie lucas!!). it follows quinlan vos and asajj ventress on an undercover mission to kill dooku. sounds weird, right???? i pushed it off for a year and i regret that so much. tied for my favorite star wars book.

the high republic. not a single book but an entire era that takes a look at the jedi order ~250 yrs before the prequels. it’s a collection of adult/YA/middle grade books, comics, and eventually a disney+ show (the acolyte). if you want something completely new, this is it! here’s a list with the reading order. i’ve personally only read the adult + YA books and i’ve really enjoyed them and haven’t felt like i’ve missed out by not reading everything.

ahsoka by e.k. johnston. this author’s books definitely feel more “YA” than others, but it’s well worth reading if you’re a fan of clone wars, rebels, or you’re interested in the formation of the rebellion.

the padme trilogy by e.k. johnston. same as above, but they’re a super quick read + really add to the prequels, especially the phantom menace. 

a new dawn by john jackson miller. the first canon book published and you can tell. definitely not my favorite, but it’s worth reading if you’re a fan of rebels. it’s way too focused on the horrible action plot and doesn’t give us much on hera, but it adds a lot to kanan’s history as a padawan + after order 66.

resistance reborn by rebecca roanhorse. if you want more from the sequels (including a whole page of finnpoe content) look no further. best read after the two leia-centric books mentioned above. not star wars but this author's book "black sun" is very good.

i’ve only read a handful of legends books (most are way too focused on the action for me) but here are some recs from that group

the revenge of the sith novelization by matthew woodring stover. like, yeah, it’s just a retelling of the movie we’ve all watched a million times but with extra scenes /and/ the character’s thoughts + feelings. makes it way more tragic. might contain a scene insinuating that obi-wan is hooking up with bail organa.

wild space by karen miller. a great look at obi-wan + anakin right after attack of the clones as they adjust to war, anakin adjusts to having a padawan, and obi-wan tries to talk to him about his attachment to padme. but 90% of it is bail + obi-wan stuck together on a mission and, you guessed it, there’s a lot of sexual tension.

the jedi apprentice series by jude watson. i literally started reading these bc i didn’t understand some references to obi-wan’s past in fanfic lol. 150-200 pages each, they’re short and simple but add a lot to obi-wan’s story as a padawan. most consider these canon.

The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin is REALLY good Axiom’s End, by Lindsay Ellis, starts rough, but improves ALLOT after the first act and finishes wonderfully. Also, The Subtext: The rich, Rich Subtext :3 :3 :3 The Teixcalaan Series by (Ascended Homestuck)Arkady Martine, two books out currently, is a Very Fun and Rare example of what you could call Hard-Political Sci Fi? VERY Much about Diplomacy, Bureaucracy, History, Culture and the, shall we say, “complications” of Empire for everyone involved(but mostly the ppl being Empired at). The first book, A Memory Called Empire, is VERY Good, though it’s got a weird flow where I felt it started strong, ended strong, but wobbled a bit in the middle. The 2nd book, A Desolation Called Peace is... It’s good in different ways, flawed in that the plotting generally feels more Convenient and less deeply Developed than in Memory, but I found I didn’t really care about the problems weighed against what I liked in it. The Temeraire Series, by Naomi Novik(remember that name: anybook wearing it is likely to be Good) is a WONDERFUL Historical-Fantasy series, set in a time period(The Napoleonic Era) woefully underserved in the Fantasy genre which asks the Very Important Question “What if Dragons Were Real?”, and then deconstructs European Empire and Imperial Imagination with the answers. It’s Great. The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison is another wonderfully Political Fantasy book set in the Age of Sail/Steam, but with Airships. The Airships aren’t important though; the Clothes are. And the Politicking(which means Dinner Planning). And the Lifetime of Familial Truama. And the Engineering. And the Buff SwordFighting Girlfriends who will skewer anyone who so much as ruffles your Bueautiously Bedazzled Brow, even if they don’t particularly understand or care that much for your ideals. There’s apparently a 2nd book in the series, that I JUST found out about looking up this one, so I’m going to be getting on getting that >:| Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, by Susanna Clarke, is not a book, but rather a Positive TOME. It’s big is what I’m saying. Magisterial would be an apt description, and you’ll need the thesaurus for this one too I assure you. It is ALSO set in the Napoleonic Era, which is kind of becoming a theme with this list isnt it, and it’s about Two Gentlemen(actually Four, and one Lady) of markedly different Romantic Literary Tropes bringing Magic back to the world(they used to have Magic, but then a Giant Crow ate it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ). It is VERY Good but, like I said, HUGE, and it takes, like, a month to read(unless you’re insane like me, and dedicate every waking moment of, like, a week to reading it, which invariably happens when I open the dang thing). The author also has a new book out, Piranesi, which has won ALL The Praise, but I haven’t read it yet so’s I can nary say good nor bad about it, sadly :T She also wrote a book of short-stories, which I ALSO have not read, and ALSO Have Been Meaning To Read for, like, a decade now X| The Greta Helsing Novels by (Ascended Homestuck)Vivian Shaw, currently a Trilogy but I’m hoping maybe someday publishers will Wisen and we’ll get more it’d be a Wonderful counterpoint to the Dresden Files approach to pulp, is pretty much The Opposite of Strange and Norrell. They’re nice, Light, quick, fun reads, Competent and Workerly; the sort of thing ppl tend to call “summer” or “vacation” books. It’s about a human doctor who takes care of the undead, and the Shenanigans this gets her into. Shaw has a FANTASTIC brain, and she uses the series as an excuse to share&explore her knowledge on various esoteric subjects like Sewer Architecture, Nuclear Reactors, and Historical Divine Bureaucracy Headcanons :3 :3 Also, like, 80% of the characters in the series are taken from 1800s pulp horror fiction; It’s Gr8. IF you can find a collection of either of their works, which isn’t terribly likely, sadly, because Capitalism is Awful, Jack Vance and Fritz Leiber were probably the BEST writers of the Pulp Fantasy Era/Genre(think Conan or Lovecraft). Tales of the Dying Earth is basically the soil Adventure Time(and He Man, coincidentally, and basically the Whole subgenre of “Wait: This isn’t THE PAST!!!” scifi-fantasy) grew out of, and it’s also a pretty excellent transposition of The Odyssey into SciFi Fantasy. Of Leiber I have read only a comic rendition of SOME of his Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories, and a SINGLE TEASER PASSAGE from his actual writing, and both totally blew me away with their artistry, pathos, and naturalistic flow and dialogue. I dont know his works directly, though, so maybe the rest isn’t so great, or dabbles in the execrable gender- racial- and imperial-politics so common to white male sci-fi writers of that era.
