[ light rattling ]
Frances: The hell?
Frances: Christ. Atlas. Atlas! Wake up!
Atlas: Hmm? Oh! Hello you.
Frances: Found you.
Atlas: Good job but you never really needed me to tell you that.
Frances: Are you sober?
Atlas: Definitely coming down, that’s for sure.
Atlas: [ rustling ]
Frances: You decent?
Atlas: [ snorts ] Sure. What? Did you want some? Should have told me sooner since I’m empty.
Frances: You promised me this would stop. That was our deal.
Atlas: Promises are such a big commitment for something with such little return. I need something consistent, something I know.
Frances: Did he really mess you up that badly?
Atlas: Don’t.
Frances: Because everything changed when he came into our lives.
Atlas: Stop.
Frances: You can’t even acknowledge him because you know it’s true.
Atlas: Stop it.
Frances: ROWAN! His name was Rowan and he ruined everything!
Atlas: Ruined everything?! Hah… Hahaha! No, no you’re wrong-
Frances: You’re so delusional you can’t even see it. Of course you can't, how could you?
Atlas: Get out.
Frances: I am trying to help you!
Atlas: I said get out-
She grabs him by the shoulders
Frances: Were we not enough? Was I never enough? I’ve been here the entire time! All he ever did was leave you! I... I shouldn’t have said that.
Atlas: [ voice breaks ] oh god…
Frances: Hey. No, no. I’m sorry.
Atlas: [ whispers ] He didn’t ruin me, he only set me free.
Frances: This is the price of freedom?
Atlas: No, this is the price of a heartbreak. This part is my fault.
Frances: You can’t keep blaming yourself.
Atlas: What makes you think I was in the right?
Frances: Because you’re my brother. I know you.
Atlas: [ small huff ] And you should know you can’t change a thing.
Frances: I can. You’re going to get better. You have to.
Atlas: How naive do you have to be to believe it’s a choice? I-
Frances: Are you ready to lose it all?
Atlas: … Say what you came here to say, Frances.
Frances: I don’t want this to be the rest of our lives. This has to be the last time. It needs to. [ pauses ] It needs to be or else I’m done.
?: [ hurried knocking ]
Frances: You expecting someone?
Atlas: Trouble.
Frances: What?
?: [ banging ] I know you’re in there Atlas! Open the fucking door!
Frances: What did you do?
Atlas: You should… Stay here. Don’t come out until I say so.

What really gets me about PeteKenta this week (and by that I mean that it causes me emotional damage), much more so than in the episode before (or in the whole of season 1 even though the seeds were already there) is how emotionally careless Pete acts towards Kenta (and the mission against Tony but maybe that's for my PeteChrisWay post). And it's all such a mess -- their shared past, their individual traumas, their current preoccupation with second chances -- that I can't even blame Pete, even if I'm fully on Kenta's side here.
Pete treats (and, let's be honest here, this isn't even the first or fifth time) Kenta as an afterthought. I know he means well and that he's driven by trying to make amends for something that was never even his fault to begin with. I also understand that with the way things are right now in canon, his feelings for Kenta were always platonic (even though that makes the one kiss they shared kind of questionable in retrospect because at the very least he was acting very inquisitive, inviting even) which is fair enough. I wish they'd kept the whole "the one that got away" angle because it feels so much more realistic to me than the revelation that all this time Pete was himself secretly pining after Way.
(adding a sprinkle of gifs to this post because clearly I'm not suffering enough already)
The secret pining COULD however at least partially explain why Pete never put a stop to Kenta's one-sided pining either. Because he must always have known. He can repeat the "he thinks of me as a brother" line a hundred times, but he's a telepath. Kenta and he kissed, and every time they've since met and touched, Kenta's thoughts are very obviously all but screaming his longing at him.
And yet Pete has never said anything -- either to spare Kenta's feelings or (judging by how he handled his secret crush on Way) because he found the situation to be overwhelming. Again, I don't blame Pete in the slightest, it's not like he had an emotionally healthy childhood to learn how to approach these things. I don't even blame him for the third possibility: that Kenta's crush is a very useful thing for him to keep around, especially since in the past it's kept him out of Tony's reach (plus, feeling wanted when your own love is unrequited probably feels very nice too).
There's no way Kenta would have let him leave over and over again if it wasn't for his feelings (and remember, Kenta never extended the same courtesy to any of his other brothers until much later). Unrequited or not, not addressing the elephant in the room left Kenta in limbo for years. He's kidnapped children for Tony, probably even killed for Tony, yet as soon as Pete starts leaning into Kenta's longing for him, Kenta can't bring himself to stop Pete (much less harm him or rat him out to Tony) -- which is a really convenient secret weapon to have in a fight against someone as ruthless and powerful as Tony. It's not even deliberate manipulation but pure self-preservation. Babe and Jeff and Charlie and Way have all learned to survive on less than that. It's about time we see the damage that Tony caused in Pete.
And not only that. I think now we also get to see that Pete doesn't know or understand Kenta nearly as well enough as he believes. He literally asks the go-it-alone guy to not go it alone when that's kind of his whole thing (not to mention that OF COURSE Kenta will do the thing for him and not care for the consequences -- it's all he knows to do to earn appreciation). He's essentially leaving Kenta on stand-by, not like the brother he claims to be, but like a thing he can just pick back up whenever it's most convenient for him. And he deals out praise to Kim while openly reprimanding Kenta in the next sentence -- which ironically is such a Tony thing to do because it keeps Kenta small and loyal.
Pete is so willfully blind towards Kenta's feelings and to who Kenta is as a person that it makes him look like a total dick here. And the thing is, his defence doesn't even hold up: you wouldn't treat your brother like that either, someone you claim you share a bond with. Hell, if Pete treated Kim that way -- someone who's only marginally involved -- Kim would surely let him have a piece of his mind. But Kenta has learned to suffer in silence so why bother changing the status quo (and never mind that the status quo was Tony)?
As things are right now, Pete's allowed to have priorities (currently these priorities lie with neglecting everyone's safety by dicking down Chris on every imaginable surface in his condo while not even using a secure password on his private computer) while all Kenta is allowed to do (all that he KNOWS to do) is switch masters from Tony to... what? a very absent Pete?
I'll always love PeteKenta, and I'll always love the could-have-beens from Pit Babe Season 1, but with how things are playing out right now I either need Kim to put Pete in his place (good) or Kenta to walk away and leave Pete on read (even better).
#pit babe#pit babe 2#pit babe the series#petekenta#jane watches stuff#i mostly wrote this to get it out of my system#so pls excuse if this is kind of one-sided and unfair to pete#i could write this from his perspective and find equally as compelling arguments#which makes these characters so very good#and it's kind of ironic how pete is now at the other end of the whole unrequited crush thing and completely unravelling#in season 1 we got to know him as this larger than life hero-like figure#and now he's the most wet and pathetic of them all#(except for winner)#but also#i think they were still trying things out in season 1#along with chemistry and pairings#and as soon as they settled they had to go back on some of what's implied for marketing reasons#lord knows fandom can't even handle willy's harassment of babe#someone having a past with another love interest? UNPOSSIBLE

This was going to be a panel of a little comic but I got too invested in drawing minute background details so, here.
#They are having an argument over 1) whether crops can be grown on the moons 2) what - if any - impact does this have on the feasibility#of an afterlife being located on the moons#Brakul is a partial convert to the Imperial Wardi faith but this mostly entails having adopted the seven faced God (and some#other elements of the belief system) into his worldview and participating in expected rites while retaining his central#ancestor veneration practices completely unchanged and mostly prioritized.#This doesn't actually cause much friction in of itself with the big exception being disagreements on the afterlife#Wardi practices surrounding death prioritize proper handling of the corpse and funerary rites in order to get the dead where they#need to be- death is a fraught transition from one state to another. analogous to birth. The role of the living is to get the dead through#this transition (preventing them from being stuck earthbound as earthbound ghosts - which is the Bad afterlife). Once the dead#make it to the moons that's it. They don't really interact with the living. There's plenty of conceptualization of what it's Like#in the lunar lands but the cultural priority is not even slightly on the Logistics of existence there.#Whereas the CORE of religious practice among the Hill Tribes is ancestor veneration - ancestors remain interactive with the living#and require/desire their continual support. They are conceptualized as having earthlike 'lives' where they eat and drink#and grow crops and herd livestock and they need the support of the living (in prayers and offerings) to do so prosperously.#There is a HIGH cultural priority on the logistics of their afterlife and it's self-apparent that the world of the dead needs fertile earth#to support them.#So like bottom line Brakul thinks there's no goddamn way that the moons could support an afterlife (they are described as#barren rock that was flung into the sky during creation and certainly Look that way)#and that the Wardi are just wrong about their afterlife's location. They probably go to the celestial fields (which are located#behind the moons and stars) like everyone else#And Janeys finds this aggravating and doesn't see his fucking point but has developed a nagging concern that Brakul Could be#partly right in that the celestial fields could Maybe exist in addition to the lunar lands.#So like maybe they aren't going to go to the same place when they die?#He's already terrified that he'll be stuck as an earthbound ghost and really doesn't want to be even further separated so#he figures he should make sure he gets himself dead and cremated at the same time as Brakul so they can navigate the#transitional period together.#Brakul is unconcerned because he figures that if Janeys actually does get stuck on those barren ass moons he can just kinda#Go Get Him#Ancestor spirits fly to the earth all the time and the moons would be a much shorter distance. Probably wouldn't be an issue.#Long story short these disagreements and underlying anxieties result in fights over whether you can grow corn on the moons or nah

"Israel's actions in Gaza are genocide and need to stop immediately."
"Hamas started this war. Return the damn hostages immediately."
....
Why is it so hard to say those two things at once?
#I'm not trying to oversimplify an extremely sad and horrific situation rooted in a very complex history.#I'm trying to simplify what our slogans should be as outsiders.#Netanyahu#Israel#Gaza#Hamas#Hostages#October 7#Palestine#Genocide#As outsiders our activism SHOULD NOT be attempting to solve a geopoltical problem we don't understand.#It should be a call for justice right now. Period.#Call me a crazy moderate but I genuinely do not understand what is so impossible about acknowledging the horrible suffering and fear#That both sides have been experiencing for generations#Do not pretend that acknowledgment is a matter of condoning actions. It is simply compassion#Express compassion. Call for ceasefires. Literally that's it except for activism in your own government about however THEY are handling it#Anyway. The main problem some readers are having with this post seems to be that I chose to use the word 'genocide.' I understand that.#And believe me as a moderate I weigh words like that very carefully before using them.#For example I only started officially tagging 'authoritarianism' for the USA like...2 days ago. If that says anything.#So... no I am not going to retract that word or change the original post at all.#But reading your responses I hope I have gained more perspective on how that word feels to you guys.#I appreciate the civil discussion in the reblogs. I can't imagine how hard this is.#Especially after things heated up suddenly with Iran this week#Stay safe

As a show of good faith toward the remaining Decepticons at the beginning of a new, united Cybertron, newly appointed Senators Bumblebee and Soundwave allowed Shatter and Dropkick to enlist into Autobot City's Defense Team.
These two turned out to be... not the best choices.
The city may have fallen to Insurgent Decepticon occupation had it not been for young recruits Hot Rod and Arcee's accidental interception of Shatter's communication with the fugitive Starscream.
To replace the errant Defense Team members, Springer and Blurr were reassigned from Iacon to Autobot City in their stead.

the more i look at it the more i realize human domestication guide stuff is really just "what if a species of benevolent but *extremely* patronizing aliens doms invaded, and their master plan was (in equal measure) cherishing and infantilizing autistic trans girls with problematic kinks (who love it)"
and wouldn't you know it, turns out i'm in the target demo
#read one fic written by autistic trans author which basically boiled down to:#“hey. we know you're really trying hard to be 'high functioning'. everyone sees it. you did good. how about you rest now and we take over?”#except. you know. kinky plant aliens imposing this on her cuz she had internalized capitalist and ableist shit and thought she had to just#keep burning herself out because that was what was expected of her. cuz other people could handle it even if she couldn't. so here comes th#kinky plant alien dom to gently force being loved and supported and cared for (and fucked by kinky plant alien doms) down your throat.#and after reading that i had a literal “ohh. i get it.” moment

i think my problem with this dw season arc accusing the audience of fanbrain for theorising about ruby is that it both feels deceitful and isn't actually that compelling from a character perspective. the season goes out of its way to build up supernatural mystery around ruby and even invokes susan more heavily than ever before in a way that is deliberately trying to get the audience to make those connections. and then it turns around and says you stupid idiot why would you ever try to connect these dots i have deliberately tried to get you to connect.
building up a mystery only for the character to be ordinary is an impossible girl arc redux only this time accusing the viewer of failing to see the humanity of the companion, whereas the impossible girl arc was turning that accusation on the doctor. 7b didn't really blame the audience for viewing clara as a puzzle and in fact several times spells out the fact that clara is perfectly ordinary before the big reveal to give the audience a chance to catch on. as 7b goes on, instead of laying the mystery on thicker, the audience just gets more and more affirmations that clara is a normal human being (rings of akhaten, journey to the centre of the tardis, hide). i found this approach compelling because it was rooted in character, focusing on the doctor's disconnection from humanity/the gendered dynamic of a man treating a woman as his manic pixie mystery to pull him out of grief. s14's meta approach of accusing the viewer feels both unfair, given it has deliberately led the viewer towards theorising, and personally less compelling to me because it wasn't tied into character in any way.
the thing about rey's parentage in tlj is that the reason rian johnson chose to go for that reveal was that it was the only answer that was interesting. none of the theories - rey is a skywalker, rey is a kenobi, and even the eventually canonical rey is a palpatine - were interesting or satisfying because they brought nothing compelling to the table for the story being told. the only satisfaction to be gained from those answers was a fanbrained "omg rey is important because she's related to that guy from the other movie." on top of that, rey desperately wants her parents to have been important, to give her life and her abandonment some kind of significance. so them being ordinary provided the most compelling trajectory for her character because it was the thing she least wanted to hear. it forced her to do the most introspection and growth, as well as tying into the film's themes about the capacity of ordinary people to be special. it wasn't just a choice made to "gotcha" the viewer, it was rooted in character.
i don't think ruby's mother being ordinary accomplishes the same thing. by invoking susan, s14 is engaging with the most egregious example of the doctor's streak of abandonment, which has potential to be very compelling in relation to ruby (and now also the doctor's) own abandonment issues. theories that ruby might be susan, or be somehow related to susan, or somehow related to the doctor, weren't just fanbrained "omg she's related to that guy i know from the classic series." they were theories genuinely rooted in character and the potential to explore both the doctor and ruby's issues with abandonment. and this is something the show willingly led fans towards by invoking susan so much in the first place. so for the show to turn around and act like they were shallow out of nowhere ideas when they were not shallow and were based on potential character conflicts the show itself deliberately invoked, feels misguided.
as well as that, ruby's mother being ordinary does not require that same growth from ruby as it did for rey because it is exactly what ruby wanted to hear. she never wanted her mother to be important, she just wanted to know who her mother was and have a connection with her. so finding out she was a normal woman who still loves her and wants to be a part of her life is everything she's ever wanted. it doesn't introduce interesting conflict for her the way rey's parents being ordinary did for her, because they were written as different characters with different hangups over their abandonment.
tl;dr i don't necessarily dislike ruby's mother being ordinary as an idea but compared to the things it was inspired by - 7b and star wars - it is not nearly as compelling in terms of how it relates to the characters or themes. and the meta angle, while conceptually interesting, doesn't quite work for me because it feels a little manipulative of the audience.
#blahs#dw#dw spoilers#like to be clear i'm not necessarily saying ruby's mother SHOULD have turned out to be susan#i'm saying that if it was always going to be an ordinary woman then rtd should've constructed a better arc around that#bc for the one he did write it's not that compelling of an answer. it doesn't really move anyone forward except maybe the doctor himself#bc the doctor is now sad that ruby has what he can never find#like yeah okay that's interesting... next season. and for the doctor. but not really for ruby!! and not for s14 as a whole!!#and like pulling the rug out of a mystery like this is something moffat also did a lot#like invoking the name of the doctor only to not reveal it or teasing the hybrid as a big alien villain only for it to be twelveclara#but the thing about those is that moffat never makes the answer that he rejects genuinely compelling#like he rejects learning the doctor's name bc there is nothing compelling about knowing it and he never tries to make you think there is#he rejects the hybrid as a warrior alien bc there's nothing compelling about that and he doesn't try to make you think there is#i feel subversive moffat mysteries are always leading you towards why the answer he gives you is the most compelling one#which i don't think s14 accomplishes. instead it's like haha! tricked you! your genuinely interesting theories are silly and dumb!#idk. i see the vision but i don't think it was handled with a deft hand so it ended up kind of a mess that didn't land imo

got reminded of it ... but i think about the symbolism of jax' model a lot bc i think its subtle!!! but its there
and i think the crux of it is that jax' model is very much a prey animal, something that contradicts his general tendency for reckless, mean bullshit. there could be something there about him having front-facing eyes too. and iirc gooseworx said the farm was a lie which i do take into account but also i think it helps w his generally very 'natural' or real-world-nature design components and ideas being evoked. he has clothes and these clothes are very minimal and hes a real animal fairly closely associated with farming or hunting and is very humanlike and his pocket just Has Mulch in it. even if the farm isnt real theres definitely something his design is evoking here
that and an idea ive thought of is that rabbits are VERY much animals that operate on instinct. they do a lot of things based on an immediate need, typically for survival, at least in the wild. and i dont know if id describe jax as fearful (some could argue he is in his own way, which i dont disagree with, but i think the implications can be a bit loaded- but theres many ways a person can be fearful) but he definitely operates on what he immediately wants. he wants to have fun. so he DOES. it doesnt matter what that entails. he wants control, so he takes it out on the others. it doesnt matter what that entails. etc etc. hes also running from something and i think the image of a rabbit fits that well
i think its deliberate that jax is the only design that actually revolves around an animal that we see. theres dobby and that worm on a string in the back but of the main cast its ALL humans or items, jax is the only one whos an animal (and probably still intended to be toy-like, but none of the others have distinct animals theyre meant to be). and it feels purposeful in a way i genuinely think about a lot. i cant place what its implying for certain because i genuinely dont think we have enough information on jax to fully understand his thought processes, but it does make him very connected to the real world, but in a distant way
#tadc#why not it can go in the tag#also i think everyone and their mom has pointed out the deliberate allusion to cartoon rabbits#which i think helps to highlight his nature as like... a similar 'trickster' sort of character#add into that my idea that each of the cast members is like. idk if deconstruction is the right word?#but something of that sort but for cartoon character archetypes#jax being the sly 'cool' guy prone to slapstick and mischief#he highlights how much that kinda person would actually SUCK as a real person#but thats a diff analysis for another time#noting it as another concept for a hypothetical video essay LOL#circus discussion#im getting a better sense of a new schedule so hopefully i can be a bit more active#also i still need to make my color theory for this show... blues and greens man....#i need to figure out what purple and pinks are for#hm.... zooble and jax as the only one with pinks in there design#plus zooble never having consistent colors other than pink and yellow... hmm#sorry im getting off track LOL#i think many characters on this show are rife for analysis and discussion... and jax is very#hes not my favorite character (thatd be pomni which anyone whos seen me could tell HAHA)#but i think hes one of the most fun to discuss/analyze. he has a lot going on and a lot of it is more abstract than the other characters#given the lack of information we have on him so far#i think its deliberate hes like. one of the most frequently evoked characters by the show. if that sentence makes actual sense#point is that i think other charatcers are super important plot wise or development wise etc etc#but jax feels more important symbolically. hes most important to themes in the show#makes sense with him being the exception to so many things being established...#which i appreciate the show doing. its a very bold move and im excited to see how hes handled down the line

Do you ever think about Mobs repressed anger. Do you ever think about his manga lines about just how badly Reigens lies fucked him up. Do you ever think about how he felt like nobody would actually come to help him, nobody would actually be there if he needed, nobody would actually be around him if it wasn't for the Mob persona. Do you ever think about how he felt like any good traits in him were a lie he made to be liked. Do you ever think about how he thinks the only way to be truly seen is to tear apart his life from the ground up so nobody will try to use him anymore. Do you ever think about Shigeo
”the only one who ever saved me was me” but angry! because he shouldn’t have had to save himself! (and also him Needing to shatter everyone’s perception of him in the most destructive way possible because if there’s even a chance that they genuinely liked him. that they would accept him even when he’s the monster he’s been afraid of his whole life. then everything he’s done and believed and every part of himself he’s suffocated to death- wasn’t necessary. if people other than tsubomi (or possibly ritsu as per the manga) can understand and accept him as he “truly is” then he could’ve been a Person this entire time!!)
#mp100#mp100 spoilers#sorry i can NOT let go of the confession arc breakdown yaknow#like. he’s spent so long hiding the ugly parts of him. the parts that he didn’t like. when they were what was keeping him alive#and now he’s forcing everyone to confront that he isn’t perfect because he can’t handle that part of him and also doesn’t want to be anymor#throwing all his faults in everyone’s faces so they can’t ignore it anymore. so HE can’t ignore it anymore#he wants to be accepted so so bad that he tries to make himself an irredeemable monster#and it doesn’t work because he’s human! he’s always been! he is not the exception to the rules the entire show has been building up!#and he keeps moving the goalposts too. every time someone stands up to try and help him he comes up with reasons why they’re Using Him#and just. stg, being an enjoyer of jane twdg is like being forced into an expert-level course on the way misogyny manifests in video game spaces.
god forbid a woman be complex or difficult or provably mischaracterized (see tags) at the end of her arc to service the culmination of a man’s storyline.
#“kenny was harrowed by loss in his family” so was jane. that is part of them literally being foils.#“kenny teaches clem more!” literally untrue a lot of clem’s combat style is rooted in what jane taught her (targeting the knees & basically#everything clem knows about knife combat- jane is also mirrored with lee in this sense as like was previously stated knife combat later goe#on to become a major element of how clem fights only outweighed by her use of firearms)#she teaches clem the gut trick & we see the innovative thinking that comes with being more independent & proactive influence the way clem#handles sticky situations & deals with feeling disempowered. like this is going to sound odd but the fact that her behaviour mirrors jane#at her best (even though her relationship with aj is more maternal the way she approaches him much more as an equal & capable of holding#agency over his own life is much more reminiscent of the way she was treated by jane & luke positively + the rest of the adults negatively#than how kenny or even lee treated clem [though lee did start to view her this way after the train] + her people reading skill.) & at her#worst (isolating herself + becoming cold + the fact she is [based on player choice] willing to leave aj behind for both their survival +#struggling with her need for community vs her sense of distrust in their lasting stability + her tendency to be unfeelingly pragmatic to a#fault except when it comes to aj + the fact that clem- at her worst is self-serving & somewhat uncaring in comparison to kenny’s possessive#hot-headedness etc) indicates that on some level- regardless of a player’s second season ending- clem considered jane to be a better#behavioural role model- this isn’t to say kenny was unimpactful but rather that his impact was different- where behaviourally we see elemen#of lee luke jane & even carver in clem’s later behaviour kenny’s impact is more so that of a cautionary tale- somebody clem cared for who#she witnessed lose himself entirely to his worst character flaws due to an inability to cope with the world she now lives in- something he#even admits to her in multiple endings iirc. kenny becomes the fate clem must strive against at all costs.#similar can be said of the ending where you go with jane regarding how it analogies clem’s fears & low self worth as a result of being#unable to maintain what she had with aj (in a manner that mirrors jane’s story in that she’s choosing to leave behind a living relative due#to no longer being able to be what they need- again depending on player choice*)#*my exact memory of the third season is hazier tbh. iirc it is dependent on player choice whether she is complacent with the decision to#make her leave the new frontier.#like the way the ending was handled was sloppy & jane was mischaracterized as a result of being shoved into a conflict that we know for#certain was not intended to go to her. calm down & just enjoy your man without being weird & misogynistic dear god.)#(also if you like clem & jane you will like holly robinson & selina kyle dc)#twdg jane#jane twdg#twdg
