Canon Events, The Multiverse and Miles Morales
Most theories about Canon Events, discourse about the ATSV's plot holes and BTSV prediction started pissing me off. Decided to summarize ATSV myself. Let's start with the following image:
Tumblr media
Lol
What are Canon Events?
The basic.
MILES: And these nodes, where the lines converge?
MIGUEL: They are The Canon. Chapters that are a part of every spider’s story, every time.
– ATSV Script. MULTIVERSAL MAP SCENE.
Canon events are pivotal moments – milestones in their storyline– that change the course of the rest of narrative in a Spider-Man's life. The events end up shaping a series of fundamental elements including personality traits, insecurities, career prospects and more. It includes constants origin stories, significant victories, losses, and character-defining moments that contribute to the hero's identity.
Or, A moment or action that must happen to certain Spider-Men – otherwise their universe risks being destroyed.
The Canon Events connect every Spider-Person's lives together, in what Miguel name Web of Life and Destiny. It's a constant through the Multiverse.
Canon Events are real, Event ASM90 makes it clear: a police captain close to Spider-Man dies saving a kid from falling rubble during a battle with an arch-nemesis...
But Canon Event seems to be fairly flexible. Uncle Ben dies in Peter’s arms; Peter dies in Gwen’s arms; Miles loses Uncle Aaron. Every Spider-Person loses somebody they love, and this somebody can be adapted to the Spider-Person's own story – in other words, The Canon might not exactly be a prewritten rule but a guideline.
Something that need to be cleared: Miguel did study the Multiverse. It's not clear if it was after Gabriella's universe collapse or not, but he studied it to the point of being able to categorize and cross-reference the events. So far he is not wrong, much less lying. It is clear that Canon Events are a thing that exist.
Does Canon Events equal Fixed Points?
( Disclaimer: It's been years since I watch anything from the MCU. So what I'm about to say is from what I gathered from multiple wiki pages and an overview of comics. Funnily enough, the last thing I watched from the MCU was Spider-Man: No Way Home. Edit: it's been so long that I forgot the movie's name. It was actually Spider Man: Far Away From Home).
Fixed points are events in the timeline that are deemed unchangeable. Attempting to alter these points would have severe consequences, potentially destabilizing the multiverse. Fixed points are like anchors, ensuring a degree of stability in the multiversal continuum.
Miguel claims that if a Canon Event are disrupted it'll destabilize the universe up to the point of self-destruction.
Does it mean that ATSV is following the MCU take on the multiverse? Not necessarily.
In the MCU there's this thing called Incursions. Here's a short description:
An Incursion occurs when the boundary between two universes erodes and they collide, destroying one or both entirely.
Several people in the fandom dove into the conclusion that this is what happened to Gabriella's universe; Miguel interacted with it, his different molecule's resonance might have interfered with the syntonic nature of Gabriella's reality, the boundary between the two universes collided and her universe collapsed.
It even could be true, even if it was the rare case where the Incursion killed only Gabriella's universe and somehow Earth-918b – Miguel's universe, where the HQ is located – survived.
But it's not. Incursions are exactly what divert the Sony Animated Universe of the MCU, ironically. Why?
Because if the Incursion was a thing in the ATSV then the Spider-Society wouldn't be able to exist, and they couldn't constantly interact with each other, or interfere in another multiverse (even if it's to hunt down an anomaly).
One could argue that they can interfere because of their Dimensional Device – that stabilizes then enough so they can walk around multiple universes without falling dead from molecular decay.
But if that was what prevented Incursions then Gabriella's universe wouldn't be destroyed at all.
"Maybe it only works because they don't stay a lot of time in another dimensions plus they only go to other universes to deal with anomalies!"
Y'all forgot that Gwen was crashing in Hobie's dimensions? She said that it's been months since she was recruited (months since she reveled her identity to her father and, since then, apparently didn't go back to her dimension). Months, and it wasn't to deal with an anomaly, yet neither her or Hobie's dimension collapsed.
Even if she wasn't in his dimensions constantly and was somewhere else, or did go back to her dimension, don't forget the whole HQ in Earth-918 full of people from other universes – has a gym and a cafeteria, therapy offices, wouldn't be surprised if it had dorms, encouraging the Spider-Heroes to stay there for longer and interact with each other.
Mayday wasn't supposed to exist if Incursions were a thing. She was born because of Miles' influence in Peter B.'s life.
Which means ATSV doesn't have Incursions, at least not the way MCU has it even if the writers want us to see it as the same Multiverse. Ergo, Fixed Points are not necessarily Canon Events.
We know Canon Events exist and are constants through the Multiverse, but we don't know if breaking a Canon Event can cause the death of an universe because the only instance where this happened before our eyes Spot was involved and thus disqualified the data. All we have is Miguel's word for it.
Maybe Canon Events are just a pattern.
But if Canon Events are just a pattern, then why did Gabriella's universe collapse?
Here's two not-mutally-exclusive theories:
When Miguel assumed the place of his variant, the universe saw him as a parasite, someone that should have died but didn't. It self-destructed itself as a form of self-preservation that went wrong – just like we have fever when we where sick. This theory anthropomorphizes the universes, and through I like it, it's not the most probable cause. If that's what happened, then Miguel confused correlation with causation and, possibly, The Canon has nothing to do with Gabriella's universe dying.
Gabriella was supposed to be Spider-Woman. Maybe her father was who she was supposed to lose. He broke The Canon by assuming the place of his variant and this destroyed the natural order of things, resulting on the collapsing of the universe.
Let's go back to the script:
MIGUEL: That’s how the story is supposed to go. Canon events are the connections that bind our lives together. But those connections can be broken. That’s why anomalies are so dangerous...[...]
MIGUEL: You break enough canon, save enough captains, we could lose everything.
Did you notice it? Miguel worries about anomalies not only because they're ordinarily dangerous to innocent people, but they can break the connections – break the canon.
Think with me: The canon is the thing that binds Spider-People together, so wouldn't it make sense that anomalies only show up when a canon event is about to happen, if they're snatched by holes in the multiverse's fabric? Wouldn't it be easier for them to show up at the points where the universes naturally junction? Or somehow it triggers a canon event?
Take Vulture as an example. If Miguel hadn't showed up, were Gwen going to die before her time? Get permanently wounded? Something else? We know that the Canon event was supposed to happen that day because of what Layla says, "The Canon remains intact", indicating it was something that were already being monitored, the model already had a prediction for it.
Coming back to Miguel. He is determined that he broke the Canon, trillions of lives died because of it if you consider the whole universe collapsed, which goes further into other planets, other galaxies. And, if so far he was right about the Canon, wouldn't he be right about this too? Or do you think he – a man that lost his (foster) daughter – wouldn't look into why the whole universe collapsed, why she died in his hands?
There's no way to soften this. Her death is his fault and her blood is in his hands.
He's the founder of Spider-Society, assumed the role as leader. He settled a supporting system through it for mourning Spiders. If he wasn't competent and fundamentally good then a legion of Peter Parkers wouldn't follow his orders, the Spider-Society wasn't going to exist.
Miguel doesn't want anybody else to make the same mistake– this doesn't mean he doesn't make other mistakes. That's why he lashes out at Gwen and why he explains to Miles what will happen to his dad. This was a mistake that he undoubtedly committed. He shouldn't have told Miles what would happen if he wanted utmost trust that the Canon wasn't going to be broke.
He wanted Miles to believe in him.
MIGUEL: You have a choice between saving one person and saving an entire world. Every world.
He wanted Miles to do the right thing. The Trolley Problem with extra lives at risk.
That's why he antagonizes Miles afterwards. Yes, only afterwards.
Miguel knows that he could spare Miles the pain if he listened. He only gets angry and haunts Miles down when he notices Miles won't listen and that the same story will repeat just in front of his eyes.
Miguel knows what will happen if Miles save his dad. Miguel is trying to save people.
But then what will happen to Miles' dad?
Two things:
Gwen already proved that it's possible to circumvent the Canon.
Actually, her dad did. Captain Stacy stopped being a Captain. He resigned from the Police Force. He isn't going to die anymore. You can see her relief when he says this.
The Canon wasn't broken, but it doesn't mean event ASM-90 needs to happen.
But also:
The Exception Proves The Rule.
Under [the scientific version] of the phrase, the word 'proof' is to be understood in its archaic form to mean the word 'test' (this use can be seen in the phrase the proof of the pudding is in the eating).
The example is of a hypothetical critic, Jones, who never writes a favourable review.
So it is surprising when we receive an exception: a favourable review by Jones of a novel by an unknown author. Then it is discovered that the novel is his own, written under a pseudonym. The exception tested ('proved') the rule and found that it needed to be understood a little more precisely - namely, that Jones will never write a favourable review, except of his own work.The previous evaluation of Jones's ill-nature toward others is re-affirmed by discovering the manner in which the exception falls outside the rule.
– The Exception that Proves the Rule
Let's go back Canon's definition: a moment or action that must happen to certain Spider-Men – otherwise their universe risks being destroyed.
So: a Spider-Man's Canon Events are never meant to be broken or the universe will be destroyed.
Miles Morales is an anomaly. "The spider that gave you your powers wasn’t from your dimension! It was never supposed to bite you!"
If we apply that the exception proves the rule: a Spider-Man's Canon Events are never meant to be broken or the universe will be destroyed, except if the Spider-Man himself is an anomaly.
This also proves Miguel's theory of Canon Events further.
Anyway I'm going back to sleep.

Chris is destined for greatness, his chart is very clear on that. It’s why he’s been sight out so many times. He will continue to be sought out. Part of his journey though, is to come into that greatness willingly. It’s hard, it takes time.//
I have read similar things from another few people who checked his chart. I do think he's an incredibly lucky person, especially when you look at his career chart and how he rose to fame and I'd has been maintaining it without the help of a godfather in the industry and not being a nepobaby. His PR, even before this current mess I'd say was always mostly balanced. Not too in your face to the point where you get sick of him. I remember 2-ish years ago I came across a blog, they did astrology and chart readings, mentioned Chris amongst celebrities like Beyoncé and Rihanna I think, who have something in their(sorry I forgot what it was) that says in their chart that they are destined to famous, loved and admired by the masses. I know many people like to deny his fame, but I am from a small,not so well known country and while MCU fans know him by name but even just as Captain America is so well known and loved, even now.
I guess all of the current mess is something he can learn from and come into his greatness or stay stagnant.
I look forward to your chart interpretations on him. Do you have anything new and exciting to share in the future regarding Chris's chart?😀
Ok, so generally speaking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The biggest thing for him is being free of Mars. It doesn’t even re-enter Gemini before his next birthday. His time lord for this year is Venus which is currently conjunct the Sun. You can see them at 20 degrees Leo in the outer ring. His 7th house is profected, Jupiter will be there all year until it enters Gemini just in time for his birthday, so he will have a lot of luck focusing on contracts and partnerships. Pluto will continue to do the Hokey Pokey between Capricorn and Aquarius. It’s conjunct his South node currently which is helping ground him and take back his control. I’m not surprised his priority is spending time at home, it’s his 4th house cusp. Pluto is also trining his Saturn and Jupiter on one side and transiting Uranus on the other. It squares the transiting nodes, meaning he will likely reinvent his image and it will not be what people expect from him. It will be jarring but benefit him ultimately. Venus is going to stay in his tenth house until October giving him a career focus. Saturn will spend the entire time in his 5th house helping with his creative pursuits.
I did his solar return a few weeks ago, you can check that but this year for transits generally I expect him to be very focused on what he loves, he’s supported and driven to create, and self care will be a big theme. He’s taking his power back this year. With Venus as his chart ruler spending so much time in 10th house Leo I do expect him to be focused on his image right now so we may get news about that. It also rules his 7th house of contracts where Jupiter is. Ah, and I don’t know why it’s not labeled but his natal Uranus sits on his ascendant, making him generally rebellions, and now transiting Uranus is coming to sit on his descendent. It will be there a long while, Uranus is very slow. He’s going to do a lot of personal transformation in the next few years. I saw that in his solar returns as well, though that was more of the struggle he faces doing it, and I remember the 7th house was prominent in that also. So for love or for money.
I’ll go over things more specifically as events happen, like eclipses. He has been affected by those lately because of where they are happening.

Let's test a hypothesis
There is something to the combination of three, and then six, that makes a "Spider-verse" stable?
Similar to the building blocks of life and space in the MCU, the web nodes ("canon events') are shown in hexagons. Six sides.
Miles, Peter and Gwen are a group of three. With Noir, Ham and Peni they are six. (Sinister Six also being a thing in the Spider-verse.)
Each choice (leap of faith) causes two possible outcomes, roughly let's call them good or bad--though it depends on how you look at it, of course.
Our Miles getting bit by the Spider from Earth-42 causes ripples out. Miguel thinks it's because Miles is not "supposed" to be Spider-man. But anyone can wear the mask. It's not about the power it's about the choices the people with the power make. ("The power of the sun in the palm of my hands" -- Doc Ock; "The power of the multiverse in the palm of my hands" -- Spot.)
But there are consequences from the events of the first film. Ohm becomes Spot. Miles becomes Spider-man.
But also Miles inspires Peter B to have a child.
This second film is a lot about the relationship between parents and kids, I think because of those two events.
Miguel, Jessica and Peter B. are all parents. Miguel lost his child. Peter has his. Jessica is in the middle. (Though I think she is lying about her husband being alive, possibly?) They are a node of three.
Gwen, Miles and Pav are all supposed to lose the police captain. But the inclusion of Miles in the events of Pav's life, mean Captain Singh can be saved. And likewise, Gwen may be able to save Miles' dad. (Where does Peni fit into this? Her dad is dead but he's not a police captain he's in the body of a spider.)
There is an obvious visual connection between Prowler (the talon gloves) and Spider-man 2099 and Miles. That's a node. Is the Miles from Earth 42 someone who Spider-man 2099 has fought? His Spot?
At the end, Gwen seems to think adding three more Spider-people (Hobie, Spider Byte and Pav will further help the original group. Although I guess it's four because Mayday is there too. And I think she's important.)
In No Way Home, the three Peters in that film also seem to anchor one another. Peter 3 is able to save Peter 1's MJ because he experienced the loss of his Gwen. Another "anomaly" to "canon" events?
Color palettes. Typical Spider-man is blue and red. We see a lot of variations of that. But Miles - red and black. Spot = black and white.
The "canon event" nodes look very much like the screen on Doc Ock's screen when she uses the collider (when Peter A is still alive) in the first movie. Except that one looks kind of unstable, maybe because it's five dots being pulled into the center instead of six spokes of a wheel?
I think we are going to see things from Peter B's perspective a bit more (not totally, obviously Miles has to fight his alternate self) but there is backstory with Miguel ("this is not what we talked about!") and Jessica Drew (them both being mentors, Peter to Miles and Jessica to Gwen) that isn't fleshed out.
I think Peter is on Miguel's side at some points in the movie, and is swayed to by Gwen to Miles' side at the end. Her speech is what opens and ends the movie. She's urging him to take a leap of faith (Mayday pulling down her lil cap is the cutest thing ever in this essay i will).
Also. Mayday points the way to Gwen, like she is hypnotized or something. I think both she and Hobie are trying to influence people (Mayday to Peter and Hobie to Miles) to take risks when they might otherwise be cautious.
Does any of this make sense?

Mapping Hardware to Software: Understanding Devicetrees
We learned how to enable and disable particular Zephyr subsystems using the "Kconfig" infrastructure in the previous blog post, "Getting Started With Zephyr: Kconfig." In particular, we looked at the Kconfig infrastructure's three primary components. To enable the LED subsystem, we first looked at an example of a Kconfig file and how the Kconfig infrastructure is constructed. Second, we observed how the Nordic VS Code Extension's GUI-based Kconfig interface can be used to enable or disable particular Zephyr subsystems. Lastly, we observed a way to modify Zephyr that can be integrated into systems that rely on CI/CD.
Tumblr media
Adding support for communication buses and peripherals is a standard step in embedded software development, in addition to modifying an RTOS to enable or disable particular subsystems. Other MCU vendors integrate customization features into their IDE, such as enabling communication buses and configuring their parameters, as was discussed in the previous blog post. However, Zephyr also uses the "Devicetree," another construct from the Linux kernel (keep in mind that Kconfig also comes from the Linux kernel). Devicetree, or DT for short, is a data structure that describes hardware using its own language.
As ARM-based System-on-Chips (SoCs) and System-on-Modules (SoMs) running embedded Linux gained popularity, so did Devicetrees in embedded software. Bus designs that enabled automatically identifying the hardware connected to the CPU were used when Linux was first developed on Intel-based CPUs. The hardware did not need to be described in advance. However, new communication protocols and buses without any detection mechanism were introduced when ARM exploded onto the scene. As a result, the Linux kernel required a tool to recognize these buses and the devices they were connected to. Though Zephyr borrowed the devicetree concept from the Linux kernel, it is important to remember that Zephyr's use of the devicetree differs sufficiently from the Linux kernel.

BASIC SYNTAX
One of the most crucial things to keep in mind about the devicetree—which typically causes anxiety for embedded software engineers who are not familiar with Linux—is that it is neither magical nor enigmatic. All it is is a file with a vague structure. Each node in the file contains a specific set of definitions. Other nodes can include and reference a node. For instance, the LEDs found on a Nordic nRF52840 development kit are described in the following excerpt.
 (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-hardware/nrf52840-dk):  leds {        compatible = "gpio-leds";        led0: led_0 {            gpios = <&gpio0 13 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;            label = "Green LED 0";        };        led1: led_1 {            gpios = <&gpio0 14 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;            label = "Green LED 1";        };        led2: led_2 {            gpios = <&gpio0 15 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;            label = "Green LED 2";        };        led3: led_3 {            gpios = <&gpio0 16 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;            label = "Green LED 3";        };};
The "leds" node describes the four LEDs onboard the development kit.
As an aside, if you have experience with Linux, you will be familiar with the aforementioned "compatible" property. To control the GPIOs, Zephyr "finds" a device driver with a corresponding "compatible" value and calls the functions listed in the device driver. This is what you might assume right away, as I did. This isn't right! We will go into greater detail in the upcoming blog post about Zephyr's "bindings," which are its own methods for linking devicetree entries to source code. For the time being, it is important to keep in mind that Zephyr and Linux use devicetrees in sufficiently different ways.
Going back to our example, the four LEDs that the "leds" node mentions also mention nodes! For instance, in the line that follows, the "led0" node indicates the precise GPIO that is utilized to control that specific LED:  led0: led_0 {        gpios = <&gpio0 13 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;        label = “Green LED 0”;}
In the above example, GPIO0_13 controls LED0 on the board, an active low GPIO. This node consists of the following elements:
"led0" is the "node label", and is used to reference the Devicetree node.
“led_0” is the node's "full name." Typically, a node's full name consists of the node name and a unit address (for example, "my-node@12345678"), but a node without an address is acceptable as well (sometimes an address doesn't make sense, as is the case here).
·“gpios” is an example of a "property" of the "led0" node. A property is ultimately used by source code to control hardware in some manner. In this instance, the "gpios" property defines a GPIO port, pin, and the active state. The device driver uses this information to control the GPIO.
·“label” is also a property of the "led0" node. Specifically, the label property can retrieve a more descriptive name for a node. In this example, "Green LED 0" can reference the node instead of "led0".
DEVICETREE LOCATION AND HIERARCHY
An illustration of a devicetree node for the Nordic nRF52840 development kit's LEDs was shown in the section above. Looking through the various devicetrees in the Zephyr repository can be useful (we will see why in a future blog post). The Zephyr repository contains the devicetrees in two main locations. The "boards" directory in the corresponding processor architecture directory contains the devicetrees for the many boards that Zephyr supports. The top-level devicetree for the nRF52840 development kit, for instance, can be found under "boards/arm/nrf52840dk_nrf52840":
Tumblr media
".dts" is the extension for the "top-level" devicetree file, and ".dtsi" is the extension for intermediate devicetree files that are referenced by the top-level devicetree. It is possible for intermediate devicetree files to contain other intermediate files. The node that represents the LEDs on the board is visible in the nRF52840 development kit's top-level devicetree file, "nrf52840dk_nrf52840.dts," when we open it in the example above!
Tumblr media
If we scroll to the top of this file, we see the following statements: /dts-v1/;#include <nordic/nrf52840_qiaa.dtsi>#include "nrf52840dk_nrf52840-pinctrl.dtsi"
We discovered how to incorporate support for custom hardware into our Zephyr-based firmware using the "Devicetree" in this blog post. We learned how to describe LEDs on a board and specify the corresponding GPIOs from a "blinky" example. Additionally, we discovered where devicetree files are located within the Zephyr repository and how their arrangement enables the description of boards, beginning with the CPU.
 Utilizing device drivers created by others is one of the biggest benefits of using devicetree files in Zephyr over other mechanisms provided by MCU vendors in their IDEs. Usually, we have to write driver code from scratch or import libraries in various MCU-specific environments and IDEs. Instead, we can take advantage of other people's work by using Zephyr's devicetrees and device driver model. We can concentrate on crafting our final application's business logic. We will examine Zephyr's internal workings in the upcoming blog post to learn how it uses devicetrees and how it varies from the Linux kernel.

I swear I lived
|| I hope this post finds any and all of you well.
My RP history on tumblr is kind of weird. It's one of those things that can be all-consuming and great but then sort of slip into a compartment of the brain that loses its connections with all other nodes of memory.
What I know about the science of the human brain from EdPsych tells me that we rarely forget anything completely. Rather, the things that are forgotten are those things that don't have complete connections to other memories.
Gamora and the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and that era of the MCU held a great and special place for me at the time. I had just finished undergrad, and I was broke and kind of miserable, but it gave me a lot of goofy hope and joy. One of the first Peter Quill RPers I met just so happened to be someone who was basically from the same region I was! We never quite got to meet up in person, but I just thought it was crazy that someone within 30 miles of me was so touched by the same thing I was.
Over the past decade, the MCU has definitely had its ups and downs in my opinion, and for the most part my fandom interests have diverged and don't sit as soundly upon it as they used to. I know there's some great material coming out, but the end of Endgame and the fact that, as far as I know, GOTG3 didn't really "fix" it was part of a series of disappointments for me that just kind of made me finally let go. It wasn't a break-up with the fandom so much as letting it just fade away. Also, being an adult makes it really hard to have these kinds of hobbies outside the interactions with ones very closest friends.
That said, recently I saw Deadpool and Wolverine, and it was really cathartic. It pinged in my mind that this blog existed. I wanted to log in, if only to make sure it doesn't fall prey to one of tumblr's URL deletion schemes.
I saw on the dashboard that, incredibly, one or two of you are still active!
As alluded to above, I never actually saw GOTG3. I was initially excited, but then I just... didn't see it, because things I heard about it made me think it might be better for me to headcanon my own continuation and let it live in peace as it was.
Deadpool and Wolverine was very helpful to put my remaining love for the MCU into perspective. It was cynical but in a joyful and hopeful way. It acknowledged that it's very hard, sometimes, for some canon as behemoth as the MCU to continue on the way while being respectful to what was. I'm not old yet, but I'm in my 30s now, and as a Millennial it really hit home for me.
Logging in and seeing that some of you are still around made me smile, too.
Currently, I am not active in any part of the MCU fandom, but I might come back here and remedy that, if anyone is interested.
I might consider RPing Gamora again with selective partners. I would really like to have a Peter Quill to write with again.
I am also interested in a few other Marvel characters I could make sideblogs for.
Among them:
I would be interested in RPing Steve Rogers or Natasha Romanoff in a ship context with the right person.
I would be interested in RPing Skye | Daisy Johnson or Grant Ward in a ship context with the right person.
With either of the above, if I had the right partner(s) I would be interested in building a verse with gen interactions and overlap with anyone else who might be interested in writing with the characters.
I'm not sure how committed I am to this idea. It would take motivation. But, if you remember me or are interested or feel the same way, please reach out. You can send me an ask, or you can email me at somenewdisaster at gmail dot com. You can also message me on discord at prixprixprix or message me on my main tumblr account vampiremonday.

2019 in review in review:
A few years ago I started tracking yearly goals, books read, movies watched etc in a year, along with overview blurbs, in private posts. End of 2019/beginning of 2020 I was really frazzled/burned out about a lot of stuff and just never finished up making the thing. 8 months later, got the urge to read back what I’d got done, then figured I’d maybe go ahead and see about finishing.
Media tracking below the break. thoughts/blurbs written in 2020 italicized, 2019 not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~_____________________________~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Didn’t do so hot on explicit personal goals, but had a lot of stuff go ok around them this year.
School’s been fine/better than fine.
Job’s probably the biggest failing. Still with same job, haven’t made the firm moves to jump off, dragging my feet too much on exploring stuff w/ Columbia/NASA GISS.
Did not get better with covid, lol
Dating life still non-existent, but I’ve registered on apps, gotten more comfortable with selfies, improved general social life dramatically, been flirted with, updated my wardrobe, and generally started to get comfortable accepting that I’m a hot person.
Somehow got extremely better during covid.
Books
Grant (finished)
We stan a taurus legend
Guy was good at exactly one job, and was fortunate enough to have been in the right place/right time to get to do it.
Mort (discworld)
Definitely best discworld I’ve gotten to so far.
Don Quixote p. II
Really entertaining in a way that part 1 wasn’t; I was shocked how much the meta element landed for me.
Consider the Lobster (DFW collection)
had zero context on who DFW is/was when I read, and still don’t exactly tbh. Wanted to wait for a pause in The Discourse before diving into more of him, but dunno if I’m ever going to get that.
Crime and Punishment (revisited)
Weirdly didn’t get much more out of this than I did the first time I’d read it
Better Than Sex (HST Gonzo papers)
Xerox/widespread fax accessibility opening citizen access to mass media in a manner really reminiscent of what social media would go on to do at a much larger scale. Has a much more deliberate narrative arc than the other gonzo papers collections, also has that excellent HST richard nixon eulogy
The Brothers Karamazov
SPQR
Slouching Towards Bethlehem (Didion collection)
Pet Sematary
Not my favorite King, but not bad
Sourcery (discworld)
still funny/charming, but Mort really made clear/reminded me how much the hapless sadsack Rincewind mold of protagonist wears on me after a while.
The Devil's Teeth
My Year of Rest and Relaxation
Liked it a lot more once I realized it was doing a Fear and Loathing thing.
Homage to Catalonia
This should be the Orwell that gets taught in schools. Make it a followup to All Quiet on the Western Front or something, jeez.
Lyndon Johnson I
Having now finished all of them, this one’s probably the least-interesting but sets up a bunch of important context that the others still then feel the need to retread.
The Razor's Edge
Recommended to me as a “white guy discovers eastern mysticism” book, but also is more interesting in its treatment of that than I’d expected (helps it was written in the 40s).
Cat's Cradle
There’s a part in this where Vonnegut’s making fun of people who try to bond with strangers over being Hoosiers, and my dumbass immediate thought was “ooh, Vonnegut’s a hoosier? Me too!”
Lyndon Johnson II
Robert Caro felt compelled to apologize for spending so much words lionizing Coke Stevens, segregationist opponent to Johnson’s senate run. His goal was pretty clearly to show lbj’s lack of campaign charisma by contrast, definitely definitely overcommitted in his own narrativising.
Libra
I want to go back to this after reading some more De Lillo.
Gravity's Rainbow
This book absolutely kicked my ass
Overstuffed and referential in a specific way that really keeps me hooked in instead of put off. When I learn about some piece of cultural context that I retroactively recognize as being referenced in this, I want to go back and reread the entire thing.
From Caligari to Hitler
Kind of fails both as film criticism and cultural analysis, but absolutely made me want to run for the hills when considering current relationship between mainstream movies and demands of pop culture.
I took a class on Weimar cinema in undergrad that I now realize was probably biting pretty heavily from this and never once referenced it.
Movies
Venom
Movie itself is not as fun as the Tom Hardy hype coverage. PG13 was the absolute worst space to aim for, PG- or R- versions of this could have been a blast.
Harryhauser Argonauts
Was tripping when I put this on, and it was all kinds of fun.
2001: a Space Oddyssey
First time seeing this, all-time classic for a reason!
A Good American (the NSA doc)
Dr. Strangelove
Mel Brooks History of the World p. I
Not my favorite Brooks, best joke was at the beginning.
In Bruges
Had been a while since I saw a proper dark comedy.
Spiderverse
Fukkin awesome!
Visually great, and extremely better than usual superhero stuff for being aimed at PG instead of PG-13.
You Only Live Twice
Highlander (Revisited)
I watched The Old Guard on netflix recently and it mostly just made me wish I was watching Highlander instead, because at least Highlander knows exactly how goofy it is
Moonraker
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Much like The Shining, I though this would have been 100% spoiled for me by cultural osmosis, but turns out it wasn’t, and even the scenes I had seen *totally landed* in-context still.
Kung Fu Hustle
Ichi the Killer
Really gross, really fun
Matrix Reloaded (watched thru highway scene) (Revisited)
The highway scene was not nearly as cool as I remembered it being.
John Wick 3*
Probably dumbest plot of all of them, best choreography. I like how every single fight had its own distinct flavor. “Knife museum fight” “horse fight” “halle berry dogs fight”
Akira
A classic
Pet Sematary * (ugh, bad)
Why can’t john lithgow be in good movies anymore
The Revenant
MCU Spiderman
Fuck this was awful.
MCU Spiderman 2*
Really weird, complete Rorschach Test of a movie: it’d be totally valid to read into this that global warming is Fake News, for instance.
Lmao this was completely awful
Rites
Dredd (non-stallone)
oh hey Lena Headey’s in this
For All Mankind!
Watched in honor of moon landing anniversary
Lion King *
Watched it way too stoned, was like dark side of the moon + wizard of oz except instead it’s a lion king script reading + nature footage edited for lip syncing.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood *
Many scenes of very long setups for really stupid shaggy dog jokes, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. I do kinda want to rewatch now knowing more about manson, which I knew pretty much nothing about beforehand
Blowout
A good john lithgow movie
also I think I like travolta in things.
Lord of War
A Good cage movie
I like when Eamon Walker shows up in stuff.
Taxi Driver
A classic
Snowpiercer
Watched in a bar with only one speaker working, which is the correct way to watch. Weirder and funnier than I thought it was going to be, which still doesn’t make it good, but,
dbz big green dub
Exorcist III
Brad Dourif just tearing it apart
Deep Red (argento)
Suspiria (1977)
Watched the remake in 2020, which was ok, but nothing tops the Goblin score.
Elf Bowling
Thanks, Gnome
Parasite *
Interesting to me that this one seems poised to hang around people’s good esteem for a while
TV
FMA: B
Rick & Morty
Saw some episodes, generally pretty funny, some misanthropy that’s probably appealing to a certain type of teen al a something like House, but ultimately I don’t totally Get the intensity of discourse about it.
Leterkenny
Mob Psycho 100
One Punch Man
Deadwood
Watchmen
Only watched like half of it. Was playing around with a lot of hefty imagery/thematics, but didn’t really seem ready to rise above playing (tho also I feel like it’s weird on some level to *expect* them to rise above that in the first place)
Music
New Avantasia
HEALTH/ show
lol remember concerts
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard/ show
Just learned about King Gizz in 2019 and got completely obsessed with them. I don’t tend to expand my music selection very readily, and a lot of what I currently *do* know is old/inactive stuff, so it was/is incredibly exciting to have an active group with good momentum just immediately win me over like that.
Mistimed the edibles and ended up with a really good finale and a really long subway ride home.
New Yeasayer
Sad they split up
Steve Wilson Tull remixes
Aqualung’s a good album and the sound mixing’s kinda bad, so I liked this project.
Stonefield
Opened for Gizzard. Really good as studying music
Video Games
Civ VI: Gathering Storm
Hades
Turns out Supergiant’s design proclivities all work *extremely well* on a roguelike
Baba is You
Untitled Goose Game
Cute, if maybe a bit overhyped
finally fucking finished Pillars of Eternity
Had fun with it, but too long, and really dour for how long it is.
Pillars II
Kinda drifted off it eventually, but I do genuinely like that the flavor of the fantasy is colonial era rather than medieval.
There’s a Balancing Bastard Factions element where it’s like the writers are just being smartasses after a while. Having to go extremely out of their way to make siding with colonizers seem like a competitive option.
Pokemon shield
Cuphead
pisses me off, which was a nice outlet when I was stranded by flight cancellations during thanksgiving
Celeste
Also very difficult, but really easy to stay patient with, which is nice.
Disco Elysium
None of the discourse made me want to play this, but people talking about the mechanical stuff it did got me extremely interested. Mostly Delivered IMO.
Breath of the Wild
You can approach the nodes of the main quest in the order you choose, and the second one I chose made ninjas start fucking spawning everywhere when I’m just trying to explore, and there’s no way to make it stop. May go back to it one day.
i’m stealing the idea of a topical mcu/616 differences list from @suprnovas because while i know i’ve done them before, they’re scattered and scattered brain and picking through it by topic is a good idea.  and this is more, obviously, for people who may not realize that 616 tony stark is an entirely different character from mcu tony, in terms of personality and the way his life has played out, and that’s important to me to point that out.
arc reactor / rt node - mcu tony had an arc reactor, a miniaturized nuclear battery, in his chest after afghanistan to keep the shrapnel out of his heart.  no such creature exists in 616 - instead, tony wore the chestplate of the original iron man armors (which were much different than the first iterations of the mcu armors) under his clothes and it required charging every so often to function as a fancy pacemaker.  there was a big to-do about tony getting the shrapnel out, using an experimental tissue transplant surgery ages and ages before anything glowy ever sat in his chest.  later he had the rt node, which while visually similar to the arc reactor served an entirely different purpose.  the rt node was also a nuclear battery/electromagnet combo, and served to power the iron man at the time (the bleeding edge), but it also served as tony’s brain in a lot of ways.  tony had both wiped his own mind and been beaten so badly by norman osborn he had severe brain damage.  the rt was the fine line between tony in a persistent vegetative state and tony upright and walking and talking.  while not a part of his physiology any longer, he had it for several years, considering until his complete body reboot it was the only thing working as the automatic functions of brain and removing it would literally kill him.
alcoholism - tony’s alcoholism is background in the mcu, and quietly just whisked away (and while a lot of that has to do with disney...).  however, in 616, tony’s alcoholism isn’t a once-mentioned deal and everyone goes on their merry way.  tony didn’t just “handle” it, he took that plunge from grace and hit rock bottom face first.  he spent some time broke.  homeless.  missing.  it’s a prominent feature of his character, once he gets himself in aa and sober, and it’s tested multiple times.  his sobriety is used as a bargaining chip.  people try and have exploited it for their own gain (notably obadiah stane and justine hammer, the original justin hammer’s daughter).  aa plays a big part in tony’s story, he does meetings, the steps, sponsors other people (notably carol danvers).  it’s not a quiet, hidden thing, it’s very public and very honest, and something tony is very frank about being a daily struggle.
obadiah stane - mcu obadiah was a father-figure to tony.  in 616, this isn’t even remotely close to the case, and instead he was absolutely villainous from the start, in the sense that he tried (and succeeded) to legally both maneuver tony’s company right out from under him and lay claim to everything tony had ever called his own.  he manipulated tony’s need for love and problems with alcohol to secure that.  he kidnapped literally everyone he could get his hands on that meant something to tony, from pepper to the baby of a friend he helped deliver.  and after he took himself off the playing field he still had a minefield laid for tony, in the form of tony’s entire fortune (sure tony inherited the company from howard, but every penny stane took tony earned himself) behind a wall of failsafes to keep tony out if certain conditions weren’t met.  tony ultimately succeeded, but it wasn’t a one and done deal, it was a massive climb up a mountain from the very bottom.  later, obadiah’s son, zeke stane, also came after tony.
pepper potts - you know how the mcu story goes, tony gets the girl, they get married, have a kid.  yeah, 616 didn’t happen that way.  616  didn’t happen that way so much that tony and pepper have literally never been in a relationship.  they pined after each other for years, sure, and pepper is literally one of the people tony cares about most in the world and always will, but they’re not in love.  pepper ended up marrying happy and while they had their issues ultimately they were still together at the time of happy’s death.  tony and pepper have slept together ultimately a grand total of one time, and that’s been that.  tony acknowledges that his role in pepper’s life is more overly protective best friend, not partner material.  pepper is super, super important to tony, but she’s not and probably never will be his endgame.  they aren’t like that.
extremis - in mcu, extremis is a mess.  a literal, whole-ass mess.  with a fake mandarin in the deal.  so here’s how it works in 616:  tony was the one (1) extremis enhancile that didn’t completely lose his marbles, and even then it can’t be said it didn’t cause some issues, as anyone who’s ever read the civil war storyline and his duration as director of shield will know.  tony’s version of extremis rewired his body from the inside out, literally.  he had a level of technopathy, a healing factor, he could literally tap into anything electronic he wanted to, connect to satellites, whatever.  it also made him cold, distant, and more than a little less human, with less control over his already prodigious temper.  it wasn’t a fun time.  it essentially turned his brain into a computer’s harddrive, and he used it exactly that way, to the point he was backing himself up in the chance it was ever needed (spoiler: he did).  pepper didn’t get extremis.  in 616 you literally have to have a special genetic marker, or it will kill you.  gruesomely.  and, put another, easy to parse way:  extremis basically made tony a technopathic steve rogers, a super soldier.
secret identity - the mcu has tony blowing off the idea of iron man as a bodyguard as ridiculous.  616 tony posed as his own bodyguard for years.  he kept that secret so close to his vest only a handful of people knew for years and most of the avengers weren’t on that list.  actually, the one who did know was thor, not anyone else you might think.  or...that knew because tony told them so.  lots of people caught a glimpse of it, or suspected.  he’s revealed and then covered up his identity numerous times, finally coming out officially and staying out as iron man during the fight over superhero registration.  while the whole world knows now that tony stark and iron man are one in the same, for the majority of tony’s time as the armored avenger, that simply wasn’t the case.
chitauri - chitauri were an mcu/ultimates thing strictly up until secret empire (which we don’t talk about in this house), when they were introduced into 616.  that battle of new york?  in the mcu?  yeah that’s kinda...normal, for 616.  it happens often enough that the world ending or aliens trying to invade or...look, 616 is entirely more perilous of a universe.  the battle of new york is actually a conglomeration of several elements from several different 616 and ultimates battles, including the nukes.  tony doesn’t have a fear in space because of things like that, he’s actually spent lots and lots of time in space, and notably with the guardians of the galaxy (of which he was one for a hot minute).
the avengers - mcu follows the ultimates storyline for the avengers, in that they’re formed by shield.  in 616, that’s not so much the case.  the avengers formed on their own, with an entirely different line up for the team, coming together as a group to fight loki and deciding that, overall, there’s something to be said about working together.  originally it was janet van dye and hank pym (who are tony’s generation - hope van dyne does not exist in 616, instead we have nadia van dyne, who is hank’s daughter that jan has claimed as her own), thor, bruce banner, and tony.  steve is not an actual founding member, he was grandfathered in and has all the perks because it’s captain america and you just don’t leave captain america in the cold.  shield had diddly fuck all to do with them, and has worked with them in the past, sure, but it’s always been a very uneasy alliance.  to the point that shield has tried to take over tony’s company at points.  the avengers are a free-wheeling operation, funded largely through donations, the maria stark foundation, and tony’s own personal fortune.  they’re peace-keepers, classified as a non-profit, and operate by their own by-laws and regulations, which if you’re really interested, you can find here.  the only thing i’ve personally added to that is section five, and even that has some basis in canon itself.
ultron - ultron was created by hank pym (giant man, ant-man, wasp, yellowjacket, goliath), not tony.  for very different reasons.  and he’s been a thorn in the side of the world since his inception, having caused the destruction of the world more than once that’s had to be fixed.  the living creature that is time in the 616 universe is so punched full of holes from having to do shit like this it looks like swiss cheese, let’s be honest here.  vision did ultimately come from ultron, yes, but his personality is based off of that of simon williams, a superhero in 616 known as wonder man.
avengers mansion / tower / compound - the avengers used to operate out of tony’s childhood home, which he opened up to that cause, 890 fifth avenue.  when that was destroyed, they moved to stark tower.  that’s been destroyed about a hundred times at this point.  currently the main team is operating out of the body of a dead celestial in the north pole.  616 tony stark would never lower himself to buying property in upstate new york unless it’s a cabin in the adirondacks, he’d buy (and has bought) property in new jersey first, and the avengers compound, such as it is, does not exist.
civil war - there is no such thing as the sokovia accords in 616.  instead, 616 had what’s called the superhuman registration act (shra for short) which required all superhumans to register their identities with the us government.  it was strictly us-based, for the record, and happened after nitro, a villain in 616 who can basically blow himself up like a bomb at will, did so in the town of stamford after being caught out by a group of superheroes known as the new warrirors for a reality tv show.  it was the final nail in the coffin for a lot of people about superheroes (which are a part of daily life in 616) and people were scared and wanted something done.  tony was pro-registration.  steve was anti-registration, and was especially hostile after maria hill opened fire on him.  they scrapped, and scrapped hard, in multiple public battles, until steve turned himself in when he realized not only was he literally about to murder a basically defenseless tony in the middle of a street (and what do you do when your best friend’s under you and tells you to “finish it” through his broken faceplate?) and that they, both sides, were just fighting to fight, instead of fighting for something.  on the way to his arraignment, steve is assassinated.  tony literally falls apart and loses his shit utterly and completely.  there’s a lot of awful things that happen that can’t be contained to a blurb.  and it all leads to the point where tony erases his brain and norman osborn lays siege to asgard, which is near the town of broxton, oklahoma.  it’s a mess, both more contained, and bigger, because the stakes are bigger and the number of players are bigger, and there’s a skrull invasion taking place behind the whole damn thing.  there are also approximately a million conspiracy theories, some people wondered if tony had something to do with steve’s death (he didn’t, it was red skull), and it’s since shaped the entirety of what it’s like to be a superhero in the world of 616 since, even if shra has been repealed.
captain america - is this really a tony blog without a special mention for steve rogers?  the mcu, once again, defers to the ultimates storyline (which is not 616) for steve, with shield handling the thawing and reintroducing steve into the world.  in 616, the avengers find him looking for the hulk and realize he’s still alive, and end up offering him a place with them, which obviously he ends up agreeing to.  there’s a lot of differences even with steve himself which i’m not going to get entirely into but he and bucky didn’t grow up together, bucky had fuck all to do with civil war for the most part, and tony and steve are literally attached at the hip.  tony literally has a captain america collection.  the cap collection is a thing, everyone knows about it, it’s not a secret, because captain america was tony’s hero before tony ever became a superhero.  there’s none of this tension right off the bat, steve ends up friends with tony and iron man before he knows they’re the same person.  they fight so hard because they love each other so hard.  they’re close, fullstop.  tony and steve have been leading teams together since almost the very beginning, and that’s that.  also steve and tony are literally almost the same age when steve is thawed from the ice; tony becomes iron man much earlier in 616.
bucky barnes - and while we’re at it:  bucky is a super soldier in the mcu, and there’s that whole mess with civil war and tony trying to kill him.  in 616 it’s the opposite:  bucky tries to kill tony.  tony talks him down and shows him the letter that was given to him from steve after steve’s death and offers bucky the shield.  bucky agrees.  bucky has intimate knowledge of the iron man’s inner workings and how to shut it (and effectively tony) off.  completely.  tony doesn’t remember any of this.   bucky is not a super soldier in 616, he’s literally just a dude with a metal arm and a plucky attitude who has a very unique skillset and was frozen for long periods of time.  he and tony have also been on a team together with bucky as captain america, and they’re friends outside of that.  tony does the arm maintenance that bucky can’t do, knows where bucky lives, knows bucky’s cat.  there’s none of this resentment there, they’re comfortable with each other.
physicality - this is a big one.  it’s what makes him and mcu tony at a glance glaringly different, because he’s so much taller and differently framed.  he’s huge and imposing in the suit, standing level with thor and at least half a head taller than steve.  outside of it he’s still unfairly tall, but built lanky.  he doesn’t build muscle mass the way other superheroes do, and tends to shed weight with a vengeance when he’s overly stressed.  and while disney princess eyes are a thing they both share, tony’s got that bonus striking combination of blue eyes and dark hair.  he’s also about a decade  younger than mcu tony, and looks a bit younger than that bc of everything he’s done to his body to enhance it (which is mostly all moot at this point, for the record).
personality - this is really the main thing with this.  the tony you see in the mcu is not 616 tony.  at all.  616 tony is actually a fairly serious character; he’s only occasionally flighty about his company, and when he is there’s usually some iron man/avengers motivation behind it.  he works.  he works hard.  and he’s known as a good man to work for, has good company morale, and takes a very micromanaging interest in everything his company does.  he also occasionally hides out in his workshop for weeks on end and has to be dragged out to see sunlight again.  he makes his jokes, he has some levity, but he’s more prone to rambling complete with flailing arms and technobabble with some philosophical footnotes than he is making nothing but solid pop culture references.  he has interests outside of the iron man, outside of engineering, and whole those are his passion, he’s a student of history and philosophy and art, and when he has time he plops down in front of dog cops just like the rest of the 616 universe.  he has unique vocal tics that are separate and distinct from mcu tony, that, while they both self edit, 616 tony is more obvious with it, stutters over words, gets stuck.  and then has a hard time unsticking himself.  he’s more sensitive; he’s less likely to give you an insulting nickname and reach instead for terms of endearment, and literally no one is safe.  he calls steve rogers beloved, for crying out loud, and steve doesn’t bat an eyelash at it.  he’s soft, and easily bruised, but he’s also steel spined and hot tempered.  when he’s angry, you’ll know it.  he’s also very kind, and very generous, and hates himself utterly and completely.  anyone who spends any amount of time around him realizes very quickly that the plastic i’m king of the world act is a facade.  tony will work himself down to the bone to make up for sins, real and imagined.  he overreaches in making decisions for other people.  and all around is probably a less appealing character in some ways - his flaws are very obvious and very human - but is in a lot of ways entirely more layered because there’s so much at work between his different masks and what’s underneath them all.  he’s the first to offer himself up as a sacrifice if it’s needed, and reaches for the worst case scenario first.  he’ll push people away because he thinks that will somehow save them, from himself and those he’s crossed.  he’s complicated, and his complications are not always easy or appealing or fixable.  there’s a truly ugly side to it that doesn’t get glossed over, and he’s willing to go so much darker if he considers it the right thing to do.
overall, there’s only some surface stuff between 616 and the mcu.  there’s a guy named tony stark who does duty as a superhero named iron man, but how they both got to the present day is completely different, and their lives and experiences are also completely different.  diving into 616 will be like...well.  culture shock.  and i’m gonna say it (even if i know the intake of breath on the 616 side is gonna be dramatic):  for people wanting to find a characterization more closely related to the mcu?  let me point you toward the ultimates runs. it’s kinda gross, but i have a soft spot for it and also it’s more narrowly related, you’ll see things that feel entirely more familiar, before jumping off into the crazy ass world that is 616, where things like steve rogers becoming a werewolf is just...tuesday.  the mcu takes elements from both, sure, but you’re gonna see a hell of a lot more ultimates influence, and that’s a fact.
Chronology of Tony’s heart
I'm pretty sure I've typed up a chronology of Tony's heart trauma before, but in case anyone reading this needs the issue references for the very basics of Things That Have Happened To Tony Stark's Chest, here we go.
As we all know, Tony was introduced to the comics in Tales of Suspense vol 1 #39. While in Vietnam, he triggers a booby trap and the resulting explosion leaves him with shrapnel embedded in his chest, nearing his heart. Together, he and Ho Yinsen engineer the first version of the Iron Man suit, which basically functions as a pacemaker, to keep his heart beating. He has to wear the chestplate continuously, even under his normal clothes (no, don't ask me how no one notices this), and it requires regular charging from a wall socket, which Tony usually leaves until the last possible moment so he can dramatically fling himself across the room and plug himself in.
There are a couple of assumptions you might make at this point that aren't canonically true. If you're coming from MCU fandom you might think that some part of this is subcutaneous or otherwise implanted, like the arc reactor -- but it isn't. It literally just sits on top of his chest. The other thing you might assume is that charging the chestplate is painful, but this doesn't appear to be the case; in Tales of Suspense #45, Tony likens the sensation to an adrenaline rush.
What is canonical is that Tony is at this point touch-averse, because he doesn't want people knowing he has the chestplate. Check out his behavior toward his (retconned) fiancee in Iron Man v1 #244; he pushes her away when she tries to hug him, lest she feel the chestplate.
But the world finds out that Tony has the chestplate in Tales of Suspense #84, when Tony has a heart attack while testifying before Congress and collapses on the Senate floor -- they open his shirt and find the chestplate. Note that no one knows he's Iron Man; he denies it when people ask, and Happy decides to suit up and pretend to be Iron Man for a bit so that way people will have seen the two of them separately and Tony can still keep his secret identity. But the chestplate itself is now public knowledge at this point. So presumably the Avengers know now, which I think is actually a pretty underexplored topic in fanfiction.
Tony ends up losing the chestplate in Iron Man v1 #17-19, a very dramatic early arc that pits him against a LMD he has made of himself. The LMD is wearing Tony's newest armor and Tony is forced to wear the original model, which doesn't have enough power for battle and his heart at the same time, and he passes out after defeating the LMD. At this point, he is implanted with a brand new "synthetic heart." This heart is, of course, very vulnerable to stress, so, don't worry, Tony can still have a heart attack whenever the plot calls for it.
There's an arc shortly after this where he has to wear the chestplate to live. I'm having trouble tracking down where it starts, but I know that he's wearing the chestplate in IM #45 because he's thankful that he can take it off long enough to shower. (In case, you know, you were wondering about how Tony showered with this.) In IM #97 and 98 his heart is failing him again but I don't know how long that goes on for.
The remainder of volume 1, as far as I am aware, doesn't feature any specific trauma to Tony's heart that you'd need to be aware of. Granted, a lot of terrible other things happen to his body -- chronic alcoholism, paralysis, et cetera -- but if you just need to know about his heart I'm pretty sure he just still has the synthetic heart.
When Franklin Richards brings everyone back at the beginning of volume 3, I am pretty sure that the standard fandom assumption is that he gives Tony back a normal heart, because he tries to "fix" everyone -- for one thing, he brings Clint back with his hearing restored. (Curiously, it's established as canonical later in IM v3, in the Manhunt arc -- IM v3 #65-69 -- that Tony's liver is in fact still trashed from the alcoholism, so I guess Franklin never fixed that.)
And then the Sentient Armor arc happens, in IM v3 #26-30. The arc ends with the armor trying to murder Tony and then having a change of heart. When Tony suffers a heart attack, the armor rips the cybernetic, artificial heart out of its own chest and puts it into Tony's. (Yeah, I know, comics. Don't think too hard.)
This artificial heart is the heart that Tony has for the remainder of volume 3. There's a charging port in the middle of his sternum. This doesn't run the armor -- it just is his heart. Charging this one does appear to be canonically painful, as far as I can tell from IM v3 #56; Tony's given himself a bar to bite down on while he charges it.
And then Extremis happens, in Iron Man v4 #1-6. Tony gives himself Actual Superpowers (because I guess he really likes talking to machines in his head), and since his Actual Superpowers include a healing factor, generally we all figure that this is what got rid of his artificial heart and made his body basically perfect. I mean, he was a grief-stricken mess and hallucinating dead people but he was pretty while he did it, right? Right?
But Extremis doesn't last forever. Tony loses it (or most of it -- exactly what he loses is kind of unclear) during Secret Invasion, and then what happens is that he has to go on the run from Norman Osborn, who wants the SHRA database, and then in the arc World's Most Wanted (Invincible Iron Man #8-19) he ends up deleting his mind in order to delete the database.
So what he gets is the RT node (RT stands for "repulsor tech") implanted in his chest to control his brainstem, in the arc Stark Disassembled (Invincible Iron Man v1 #20-24). Pepper previously had it in her chest in the arc The Five Nightmares (Invincible Iron Man v1 #1-8), due to shrapnel problems, but she ends up okay, and anyway Tony needs it.
Now, the RT node looks (and functions) a lot more like what you might expect from the MCU arc reactor. (Yes, the MCU had started by this point.) It acts as a power source for Tony's armors -- Bleeding Edge, the first armor he builds, is stored entirely in his body. (The Extremis armor stored only the undersuit internally; all the plating was external.) But, again, it has nothing to do with his heart. His heart's fine now. This is what is keeping his brain running.
Tony has the RT up until very recently. He ends up comatose at the end of the event Civil War II, and when he is eventually revived (in approximately Iron Man #600 although if you want to be picky it's a little sooner but #600 is the Big Deal Milestone Issue) he does so in a brand-new body, without the RT. Currently he's having some kind of existential crisis about whether he's even himself now that he has a new body. But, anyway, he's fine now, though I'm sure he's due for another heart problem soon.
There we go. The saga of Tony Stark's Broken Heart.
actually, because i’ve gotten a lot of new mcu mutuals lately, and i need to redo my 616 tony stark care manual bc i wanna tweak it and make some aesthetic changes (because i’m just Like That), things you should probably know because i am actually 616/marvel prime/main continuity-based.  i swear i’ll be serious this time.  maybe.
the original flavor tony is not going to be the same tony you’re used to from the mcu - mcu tony is actually more marvel ultimates inspired, which is a whole kettle of fish unto itself and that i have a verse for, but we’ll get to that at a later date.  instead, meet main continuity tony.
+  he started his path to iron man in a very similar way to mcu tony, in that he was injured by his own weapons (depending on where you pull from the sliding timescale, it’s everything from landmines to micromunitions) that damaged his heart and left him slowly dying.  we all know this story, right?  he built the first iron man to escape and the rest is history.
+  the difference is, main continuity was dependent upon the armor’s chestplate for a few years. the arc reactor ain’t really a thing in 616, instead we have the rt node.  similar in function, only tony could use it to do unibeams without the suit.  anyway, when tony came back, he took on iron man as an alternate identity, and told the world iron man was his bodyguard.  no one knew for a few years there that tony stark - handsome, generous, kind-hearted benefactor of the avengers who opened his home to them - and the metal-clad adventurer known as iron man was the same person.  it took a mishap with molecule man and a tiny red silk thong (no, i’m not kidding) for that little secret to come to light.
+  he was in his very early twenties when he became iron man - much younger than his mcu counterpart, and he’s very, very good at being iron man.
+  his relationship to most of the avengers - and heroes in general - is very different.  his best friend in the entire world is steve rogers - he’s had a captain america memorabilia collection since before the avengers pulled steve out of the ice (which is another thing - the avengers thawed steve, and tony has always idolized him - there’s no resentment there - and steve was not a founding member, he came in after the avengers had already formed).  his other best friend is rhodey, who was his employee-turned-military liason for stark unlimted (formerly known by many other names).  his other other best friend is pepper potts - they’ve never actually been romantically involved.  his other other other best friend was happy hogan, who died a few years back during the nightmare of civil war - which was much more us-based and much more horrific in tony’s universe.  he’s carol danvers’ aa sponsor.  he’s good friends with reed richards.  he’s been friends with stephen strange for years.  he and bucky barnes are fairly close and tony’s the one that got rid of bucky’s trigger words.  he and natasha have dated...ish, and are close.  he was never peter parker’s mentor, as his peter is a full grown adult, but peter did intern for him for a while.  and was on an avengers team with him before civil war.  he, steve, and thor are still the big three, but they have a friendship that’s been forged in the fires of really bad mistakes and they’ve come out the other side still close.  he knows the guardians of the galaxy because he was a guardian for a while during his big vacation in space.  he’s dated more avengers and x-men than you can shake a stick at.  and jarvis for him is edwin jarvis, his living, breathing, now semi-retired butler who served the avengers for many years and is part of the avengers family.
+  he was director of shield for a short time after civil war and steve rogers’ assassination.  he hated the job and he hated steve being dead and he hated what he forced himself to do so bad he literally erased that entire year out of his head.  and to get rid of the database full of superhero secret identities stored in his brain but you can’t tell me he didn’t have a more recent backup without it.
+  his first ai was named homer.  jarvis actually was pepper’s ai, for her rescue suit, and was never tony’s.  friday is and has been his main ai for years, and she has a hologram form.  she mostly runs the day to day stuff that doesn’t require tony to physically be there for the company.  which, also, tony is still ceo, he hasn’t handed that over to anyone, and pulls double fulltime duty as both a working stiff and an avenger.  his eyebags are designer.
+  he was secretary of defense for a year - he got himself elected when he found out someone in military research was reverse engineering and stealing things from the iron man.
+  he’s in his early 40s and looks younger:  being an extremis enhancile for a while and then undergoing a full-body reboot does wonders for the skin, apparently.
+  he’s canonically bisexual.
+  is known for using himself as a lab rat for incorporating experimental technology into his biology.  ask me about the suit he carried in his bones!
+  he’s 6′1 with blue eyes.  that’s, uh.  kind of important to know.  he’s tall.  he’s lanky.  and if you’re not a metahuman he might just can kick your ass, because captain america trained him in hand to hand combat (of which he’s very proud of).
+  the ten rings are literally ten alien rings used by his main archvillain, the mandarin.  they hurt.  a lot.  and he hates when he gets an up close and personal view of them smashing into his face.
+  he’s not as quippy as his mcu counterpart, and instead is more prone to bad puns and rambling awkwardly.  canonically he has depression, anxiety, and ptsd, and struggles with them regularly.  he’s also a recovering alcoholic.
+  take mcu tony’s tech.  then put it on steroids.  then make it the craziest scifi thing you can imagine.  and you’ve got the barest hint of what this tony’s tech is like.  seriously.  ask me about the suit he literally carried inside of himself.  or the time he could control machines with his brain.  616 is wild.
+  he’s been homeless.  and i don’t mean rich people homeless. i mean living on the street, nearly froze to death riding out a blizzard in a doorway and almost lost fingers and toes to frostbite homeless.  tony’s a Rich Boy but one who’s had a taste of how the other half lives on more than one occasion.  he’s also worked a regular nine to five like everyone else and lived in what was...honestly...a really shitty apartment.
+  he’s adopted, and he has a(n adopted) brother named arno.  his bio mom’s a former rockstar, and his bio dad a hydra double agent.  you literally can’t make this shit up.
+  he’s incredibly self destructive and self sacrificing.  if things look hopeless he’ll be the first to offer himself for the pyre.  because he has absolutely horrid self esteem.
+  he’s a liar.  he’s sneaky.  he tends to make decisions for other people without consulting their feelings on the matter - partly because of a tony knows best attitude, but also because there are people in the world he’d do anything, and i mean anything, to keep safe, even if they hate him in the end.  it’s kind of awe inspiring and terrifying if you manage to inspire that level of devotion in tony, because really.  anything.
+  he has a playboy reputation, but he’s anything but.  you either get casual sex out of him?  or you’re married now, sorry, that’s just how it is.  he settles and nests with a vengeance.  he’s one of those people that would love to be happy and safe and loved and married and all that happy shit but doesn’t feel like he’s worthy of it.  his issues with this have issues, to be honest.
+  if you call him in the middle of the night and need an evac and you’re on his People list he will come.  twice in two days.  dropping everything to go to the middle of indiana to do it.  if you are sad and text him about it he will bring you food.  if you don’t answer his texts he will find you and check in on you.  if you feel out of place and adrift he will try to buy your baseball team and move them back to brooklyn to make you happy.  if you die and he can’t cope with your death he will buy your first avengers indenticard for 2mil at an auction because he can’t stand the thought of anyone else having it.  if you’re really special he’ll call you “beloved” and “captain handsome”.  sometimes sweetheart.  please note these things are all canon.
+  he dies a lot.  it’s okay, he gets better.
+  his irrational fears are the dark and cockroaches.  his actual fears are waking up drunk and the suit becoming a coffin.
anyway this is a Lot.  and it’s not even really scratching the surface so.  i’m gonna just drop this on the dash as is.  and you know it helps for me to make dumb lists like this from time to time to refresh things.  anyway, i know it’s a lot!  i know it’s different!  but my (broken) ims and disco (shellhead#8434) are always open for questions and plotting.  and my inbox, too, ig.  so you know.  remember we’ve got a canon multiverse.  it’s real easy for me to drop him in the mcu to make your day annoying.
Reasons Why
This story is dedicated to @shanastoryteller who mentioned in response to a recent ask sent to her that she believed Tony/Rhodey were underappreciated and that she wanted to see more of it. Agreeing with her (it’s easy to do when someone just on point with something like that), I wrote this. It ended up being longer than fics I post on Tumblr, but I’d like to think that’s less of a problem for others than it is for me.
General Warnings: Canon typical violence; mentions of past non-consensual drug use (resulting in unfriendliness towards the drugger in question); references to the MCU comic tie-ins; maybe a bit gratuitous profanity
James spent most of the flight feeling like he couldn’t breathe. No mystery franken-tech or Ten Ring remnant worried him more than the fact he couldn’t get Tony to answer. Connecting to JARVIS didn’t help ease growing fear in the airman. J apparently lost track of Tony’s vitals due to the idiot flying a fucking nuke through a wormhole. The suit had briefly gone offline and while J could confirm that it was back on this planet, diagnostic systems were not functioning.
He should have dropped the mission in Hong Kong the moment Tony called him. He should have come right away. He knew that Tony was like a cat; too many times the genius refused to ask for help when he needed it. Not this time. This time he had reached out; this time Tony had asked. Like an idiot, James had continued a goddamn mission because Tony had asked him to help protect people, because Tony wanted the suits used to help even if that meant letting a member of the Armed Forces pilot one, because Tony wouldn’t have wanted civilians left unprotected against terrorists. It just could have cost him the most important person in his life.
God, he should have dropped the mission, civilian casualties be damned. Tony had needed him and once again, he hadn’t been there. How many times would they ride this edge of disaster before one of them actually died for these people? Had it already happened and James was heading towards a body to id? JARVIS couldn’t even get a visual on the area due to damage from the alien army that had invaded New York (because that was their lives now: alien army was a thing they could face).
Hitting Midtown didn’t help. There weren’t any aliens, which James had already been expecting from J’s limited report. The destruction was vast. Alien tech littered the streets. A lot of it had damage from repulsor blasts. A quick flight around the Stark Tower showed that the upper floors had sustained damage. The penthouse had taken most of it.
His stomach felt like it was filled with gravel as he noted the entirely missing window that matched JARVIS’ report of Tony being thrown through it.
James had to find Tony ASAP.
Once he tracked down the location of Tony’s personal reactor, James took a moment to listen to JARVIS’ newest biometric scan of the genius. He spared another moment to reassure the AI that he would get Tony seen by actual medical personnel in short order. Only then did he step out of the armor to confront his troublesome lover sitting with a group of other people all of who looked just as exhausted as Tony clearly was.
James had meant to be angry or at least demanding. He had meant to scold or yell. But freed from the suit, he could smell the blood and ash in the air. He could taste the death surrounding the area. It left no room for anything except remembering the list of ways that this could have ended differently. When Tony noticed him and immediately lit up like he was seeing the best thing in the world, James could only think about how close to not even having a body to bury this situation had been.
“Rhodey,” Tony protested when James yanked him in for an embrace. He knew what Tony was trying to do, even as he melted into the hold. They had agreed to keep up the lie that they were just friends, even after the repeal. They had good, solid reasons. There had been charts even. None of it mattered now, not when Tony would have been alone.
“I’m quitting,” he declared before finally giving into the urge to rain kisses down on Tony’s upturned face. James continued his declaration even as he did so, letting the words and kisses alternate. “Not leaving you alone again. You get kidnapped or shot at or tossed out fucking windows. Nukes through wormholes. J had no clue and he couldn’t get eyes on you. Worried us, baby. No more. Not leaving again.”
A throat cleared off to the side, dragging James’ attention back to their audience. Most of the ragged group were complete strangers--though the blond in the Captain America getup did bear a passable resemblance to the real Steve Rogers. But one face was very familiar. Woman or not, James made a sudden lurch towards the spy, only stopping because he still had a hold of Tony.
“You have a lot of fucking nerve showing your face, Rushman,” James snarled. “Stab anyone with needles recently? Spiked any drinks?”
“I did what was needed,” the woman stated in a flat tone.
“I bet,” James replied, not hiding any of his disagreement with that statement. SHIELD was yet another reason that he shouldn’t be in another part of the world. It left Tony too vulnerable to them, and without backup if they decided to take more than Tony was willing to give. He had to get Tony away from here. He directed his attention back to Tony. “Why haven’t you been through decon yet? J detected residual rads beyond the node.”
“I didn’t think of it?”
“Yeah, that would be the concussion,” James noted with a stern frown. “You know, the one you got when you were thrown through a reinforced window.”
“Honeybear, sweetheart, light of my life--”
“I’m quitting.”
“You can’t do that! You love that uniform, being a part of something greater than yourself. You can’t give up something you love!”
“Oh, my little idiot,” James countered as he shifted his hold to cup Tony’s face. He planted a kiss on the brunet’s forehead, taking a moment to breathe in the scent of unwashed genius-engineer. Then he gently placed a kiss on each of Tony’s eyelids and the tip of his nose. He pulled back to see Tony staring at him with wide eyes. The man never could figure out how to respond to tenderness. “I do love my career and I worked hard to get where I am on my own merits. But you’re forgetting something, Tones, like always: there will never be anything I love more than you.”
“Platypus,” Tony whispered, his voice cracking in the middle of the word. James began urging them from the restaurant. The tower wasn’t far and it would have the facilities to handle decontamination. JARVIS could use the uplink from War Machine to restore his connection to the building and then they could probably handle any other injuries without resorting to outside medical personnel. “You still can’t quit.”
“I’m going to seriously consider it for at least the next month.” James stopped suddenly to make a point. “Tony, let’s get something clear right here and now. This? Us? It’s the greatest thing I could ever be a part of. Today, I nearly lost you again and it’s because I was once again too far away to help. So you are going to skip the very rational list of reasons why quitting is a bad idea and we’re going to get clean and patched up before making good use of the new bed you had installed in the penthouse for at least twelve hours. Then, if we aren’t feeling both our age and the fact that we got aggressively knocked around in tin cans, we’ll make better use of it. Sound like a plan?”
“You are a genius,” Tony declared in awed gratefulness.
“Takes one to know one.”
