She moves toward him - about to use the arm of her sweatshirt to wipe the blood off. But he pulls away.

A long beat as Buffy takes this in, understanding. She approaches him again. Very deliberately this time. Her hands go to his face. He looks away, but does not pull back. The gentleness of her touch holds him fast.
Buffy turns his face back to hers. Tenderly runs her fingers along his transformed features. Angel is overwhelmed. Nobody has ever touched him like this.
BUFFY I didn't even notice. She draws him close. Gaze steady. Until her lips touch his…
They melt into a heart-stopping kiss.
Yeah, I've been reading through some of the BTVS and Angel scripts for funsies lately and I noticed that part that I bolded here, and wow.

A/N: I haven't written for Smosh in years... but the current cast and crew has me sucked back into the fandom. And I am sorely in need of more Spencer content 😭

Part 1: The Kickstart {You Are Here}
Part 2: Mama Bear

It was nearly three in the morning. The witching hour, you think with a smile. There was a light flickering near the fountain drinks. You lean against the checkout counter, thumbing through an aged script.
You memorize the cue lines that signal when quick changes are supposed to happen between scenes. The current musical you are working on is Hairspray.
Going through the script and your production notes really help pass the time.
The small rinky-dink gas station you manage is your reluctant home most nights. It wasn’t your favorite place, but it helped with the bills. Trying to make a living on production design for musicals isn’t the money maker you hoped it would be in LA.
You barely made anything doing hair and makeup for the community theatre. But it was something you loved.
And wouldn’t you rather be doing something you love than being miserable in a high paying corporate job?
Sure, you think.
It had been nearly eight months since you started working at this gas station. The owner was as rinky-dink as the store itself, speaking in short, to the point sentences and avoiding eye contact. There were only two gas pumps out front that rarely attracted customers.
The biggest commodity are the cheap drinks and snacks inside. Many stop by for something quick on their way to and from work.
Normally working the night shifts from 10pm to 6am, you are quick to notice any regulars. Not many people are awake at this time of night, let alone on their way to the gas station for a drink.
The bell sounds above the door as a familiar face enters. It was Glasses.
That’s what you called him after seeing him for the third time in a week, back when you first started working here.
He usually came in late like this, looking exhausted. He has curly dark hair, gold rimmed glasses, and some scruff. Today he’s dressed in jeans rolled up at the cuffs, brown boots, and a gray sweatshirt.
He gives you an awkward, close-lipped smile as he passes. You watch him go for the drink fridges. Energy drinks are his specialty, maybe the occasional coffee or breakfast sandwich. He always bought them two at a time, taking the slight discount for buying a duo instead of a single.
About every other week he’s there three to four of those days. You’ve always wondered why – especially when he always looked so tired when he came in.
But you’ve never had a conversation that’s lasted longer than the cordial exchanges.
“Hello,” you say.
“Hello,” he replies with his awkward smile.
You scan his drinks, Mountain Dew Kickstarts like always. “Find everything you need?”
“Yep.”
The computer beeps. “That’ll be $8.56.”
“All right.” He taps his card on the machine in front of him.
“Would you like your receipt?”
“No thanks.” He grabs his two cans.
“Have a nice night.”
“You too.”
It had been like that for maybe six of those eight months. After that, your curiosity began to plague you. The next time he came in, you watch him browse for a Kickstart and a breakfast muffin.
Saying hello to him had felt routine. But it was clear that you both recognized each other. So you decide to say something a little more than usual.
“Getting breakfast a little early?” you joke in your quiet voice.
He smiles, pulling out his wallet. “I just haven’t eaten anything all night.”
“Sounds like a rough night. That’s $9.34.”
He scans his card. “It has been.”
With him looking down at the keypad, you take the time to look at the circles under his eyes. “You should try the croissant sandwiches. Much better than stale muffins.”
He nods his head, “Next time. Thanks.”
You watch him walk away, still at a loss as to why he’s always in there this late at night.
A couple days later he’s walking in and giving you a wave. You smile at him as he makes for the drinks again.
He’s dressed in those same jeans and combat boots. Now he wears a t-shirt with a denim jacket. If you had friends to talk to, you’d want to tell them how Glasses loves to wear the same jeans and jackets all the time.
He comes to the counter and clears his throat.
You scan his drinks and a breakfast sandwich. A croissant sandwich.
You chuckle, “You won’t be disappointed.”
“I’m counting on it,” he says, tapping his card against his hand while he waits.
“Haven’t eaten anything all night again?”
He hums, shrugging his shoulders, “Felt peckish.”
“Do you want your receipt?”
“No, that’s fine. Have a good night.”
You throw the balled up receipt into the garbage bin beside you. “You too.”
You’d love to tell a friend that Glasses seems shy. He seems nice.
A few weeks later, you’re drawing sketches for costume designs. You were doing Shrek The Musical at the community theatre. Papers were full of drawings depicting a white rabbit, a wicked witch, a wolf in granny clothes, and fairies with colorful makeup.
You were humming one of the songs when Glasses came in with a yawn. His eyes search for you and he waves, “Good evening.”
“Good night,” you say sarcastically.
He grabs his drinks and comes to the counter with wandering eyes. You try to move your sketches and pencils out of the way.
“Sorry,” you say, “That’ll be $8.56.”
He scans his card, but keeps looking at your art. “You draw those?”
“Yeah,” you say, abashedly. “Little project.”
“They’re really good,” he pops open one of the drinks and takes a sip. “Are they just for fun, or…?”
You shyly pull out a drawing of a person in a dragon scale costume. “They’re for the musical I’m a part of. Down at the local theatre.”
“That’s cool,” his face lights up.
Something warm tickles your stomach. You were actually having a normal conversation with Glasses.
“Are you the costume designer?”
“Assistant,” you bow your head. “I’m head of hair and makeup.”
He nods, clearly interested. “Have you been a part of production teams much?”
“For years,” you smile, “I love theatre. I’ve done almost everything. Acting, costumes, set design, lighting – you name it.”
He pockets the other energy drink in his jacket pocket. “Sounds like fun. Have a nice rest of your night.”
“Thank you, you too.”
If you had friends, maybe you’d tell them that Glasses might become a friend. The only person you have to text is your new boyfriend Aaron. But he wasn’t a fan of nonsense texts – texts that were unnecessary.
A few weeks go by, now seven months into your job at the gas station. Glasses was still making his almost daily visits. You caught him standing outside the window for a minute before coming in.
You have confusion in your face, but a smile on your lips. “You okay there?”
He raises his eyebrows and talks as he walks to the fridges. “What do you mean?”
“Was there something on that window or were you just making sure you weren’t a vampire?” At his knitted brows, you continue, “You know… checking that you still had a reflection.”
Heat floods your face at the poor attempt at a joke, but Glasses laughs, nonetheless. “I might be nocturnal, but no, I’m not a vampire.”
You smile, admiring him walking towards you. His fluffy curls were sticking out from beneath a green hat. In white embroidery it says, Smosh.
“How were auditions?” he asks, getting his card ready.
You bite the inside of your cheek. “Good. I think we’ll have a good cast.” Earlier that week he asked about the latest Hairspray script that was on your counter. “The quick changes will be fun.”
He clears his throat, having paid but still standing at the register.
“I’m sorry, did you want your receipt?” you ask suddenly. “Normally you don’t so I stopped asking.”
“No, no – sorry. I’ve been trying to find some clever segway to introduce myself. But we’ve been seeing each other for months and it feels strange to do it now.” He rubs his forehead, struggling to maintain eye contact with you while he talks. “I mean, it’s not like I have a nametag like you.”
You look down at your chest to see (Y/N) printed on the laminated tag. “That’s true.”
He takes a deep breath and extends his hand. “I’m Spencer.”
You take his hand. It was very warm. “(Y/N).”
He smiles, “Nice to officially meet you.”
Maybe you’ll tell Aaron that Glasses has a new name now. Spencer.
One night at two in the morning, you were asked to do inventory while another employee managed the registers. It was strange to have a coworker with you on night shifts, but when things need to be restocked, it took a team.
You use a box cutter to break through packages, pulling out chip bags and candies. You roll them out on a dolly. Plastic wrappers crinkling as you restock shelves, you don’t notice who Eric at the counter is talking to.
But then a pair of glasses peek around the corner. “Hey!”
You smile wide, “Spencer!”
He smiles back, “I was worried when I didn’t see you at the registers.”
“Yeah, they need two of us here when we do inventory,” you shake a bag of doritos before putting it on the shelf. “How was your day?”
He sighs, opening his drink, “Long. Shooting weeks always are.” He tells you about the online comedy group he’s a part of. It was called Smosh.
“Oh, you’ve worn some merch that has that logo on it,” you say, moving a box out of the way.
Spencer nods, “Gotta promote whenever we can.”
“How large is the group?”
“Well, it’s more of an entertainment company. We have a huge production team and a cast. We film content for four different channels.”
“That’s impressive.”
He suddenly dips down to help hand you boxes of candy. “I guess. I think most of LA are internet personalities in one way or another.”
“I’m not,” you say quietly. “It is impressive.”
You learn about his directorial position on one of the channels. Being a head producer, he has a lot of sway on that content. You commend him on the responsibility, and he seems pleased, if not a little embarrassed.
He excuses himself not long after that.
You head towards the registers to restock the candy on the counters. Eric is there giving you a telling smile.
“What are you looking at?” you ask.
The middle-aged man scoffs, “That guy came in with the biggest smile on his face, but then he realized I was the one standing at the counter and he looked so disappointed.”
“I’m sure he was just in need of an energy drink.”
Eric shakes his head, “It wasn’t me that he wanted to see.”
Now in the present, you stand at the counter while Spencer leans against the other side. You had just revealed the fact that you have a boyfriend.
“H-How long have you been together?” he asks with much more nervousness than before.
You scrunch your nose in thought, “About two months. It’s been great though. He gives me rides to work and everything.”
“You don’t have a car?” Spencer asks, paying for his snacks.
You throw the receipt away, “No. I was taking the bus before I met him.” Noticing the awkwardness enter Spencer’s face, you say, “Rough I know. But I manage.”
“It’s nice of him.”
“Yeah, especially because I don’t really make enough to get a car right now.”
“Isn’t that why you have this job on top of the musical theatre stuff?” he offers you a package of your favorite candy.
It makes you smile, “Sure. But rent isn’t helping with my savings. Living paycheck to paycheck.”
“Does Aaron drive you to theatre too?”
Your gaze falls from Spencer’s, eating a piece of candy to give you some time before answering. “No, he’s not a big fan of musicals.”
Spencer scrunches his brow. Unsure of what was stepping over the line with this new friend of his, he tiptoes. “He won’t drive you because he doesn’t like theatre?”
“It’s kind of inconvenient asking him to come get me late after rehearsals. I shouldn’t ask for so much, he’ll think I’m dating him just to have a cab driver.” You snicker at your joke, but Spencer doesn’t seem to think it’s very funny.
He drinks from his can when another customer enters the store. That always meant he would excuse himself so you could get back to your job.
You start to expect Spencer each week. You wait for when you know a filming week was at Smosh. During that time, Spencer would visit for his necessary caffeine. He always stops to talk to you for a few minutes before leaving.
You always feel bad since he normally came in exhausted from work. He denies himself sleep just to spend a few more minutes with you.
It takes a couple more weeks, but he starts to stay even when more customers come in. He just steps to the side and waits for you to ring the customer up.
Then he comes back to continue your conversation.
“So do you prefer acting or production?”
You share the snacks that he’s purchased. “Production, for sure. I kind of developed stage fright a couple years ago. But I do miss being on stage sometimes.”
He looks at you while you talk. He’s an active listener. He zeros in on your face while you speak, ensuring he doesn’t miss anything.
But when he speaks, he tends to look elsewhere. “Did something happen?”
You shrug, “I just get nervous being in the spotlight now. I don’t like the attention much.”
“I get that. I haven’t always loved being on camera. It’s taken finding the right company to do it.”
You nod, “That sounds nice. To be so comfortable in the workplace. And to have everyone there as friends.”
He agrees, “Though a lot of them like to crack jokes about not seeing each other outside of work.” He chuckles as he remembers something. “It’s great being a part of a company where the goal is comedy content. You get to have fun with your friends every day.”
“And you’ve been there for so long,” you say, “You’ve definitely earned your place.”
“Thank you,” he feels warm around the collar, “It’s been hard at times, but well worth it now.”
You suddenly feel a warmth in your cheeks. “You know, um… my show opens next week. If – If you’re interested in seeing it. I’ll be there every night.”
“Helping Edna quick change into her fancy 60s outfit,” he smiles kindly. His eyes are soft and considerate as he watches your nervous gesture. “I wouldn’t miss it.”
You brighten, “Great!”
A week later you’re in the wings of the stage, sweaty with the heat the spotlights generate. A headset adorns your head, microphone near your mouth. You’re readjusting a costume onto a rack from the last quick change.
The last number of the show was currently playing: You Can’t Stop the Beat. You whisper the lyrics and subtly follow along with the choreography.
It was safe to do so with the curtains hiding you from the audience.
You listen to the applause as the cast bows. You imagine them gesturing to the tech booth, acknowledging the production team behind the scenes. You give a little imaginary bow to the audience.
Waiting in the dressing rooms, you help organize the costumes and clean up the makeup counters. Cast members thank you for your help, carrying massive bouquets and presents from the crowd.
You compliment the flowers and give your praise to their performances. It’s forty minutes later, having put the makeup and hairspray away, preening the wigs, and spraying down the character shoes, that you find your purse and head towards the front doors.
Outside on the sidewalk you’re met with an unexpected surprise.
Spencer.
He stands under the white lights of the theatre logo. He adorns his usual rolled up jeans and band t-shirt, denim jacket over it. His curls look extra defined tonight and in his hand are three colorful carnation flowers.
“Spencer? What are you…? I didn’t know you were coming tonight!” You walk towards him and for the first time since meeting him – you hug him.
Arms around his shoulders, smelling his clean, fresh scent. He seems timid to hug you back.
“Well… I did say I would come see the show.”
You shake your head. “I would have come out sooner if I knew you’d be here. I’m so sorry to keep you so long.”
“It’s no problem,” he offers the flowers. “Worth the wait.”
You give a smile, but your face is still regretful, “You shouldn’t have. I wasn’t even on stage.”
“Of course you were,” he says, “Your costumes and wigs and makeup were there.”
You hold the few flowers, completely endeared by him. “Thank you. This is really kind of you. You didn’t have to.”
He shrugs, shoving his empty hands into his pockets. “It’s kind of weird seeing you out of uniform. I’ve never seen you out of that polo and black pants.”
“Well, stage crew attire isn’t much different,” you laugh, gesturing to the long sleeve black shirt and leggings. “What did you think of the show?”
“It was excellent,” he says, “It’s such a fun show. I bet you loved teasing those wigs and picking out costumes with those crazy patterns.”
“And the quick changes?”
“I counted like 38 seconds,” he laughs, “That’s super impressive.”
You smile warmly, though the night air had a chill to it. “Thank you for coming, Spencer. It means a lot.”
“Of course,” he steps away, “I’ll see you later.”
You start to walk down the sidewalk, opposite the parking lot. Spencer suddenly has a thought. He runs up to you.
“Wait, how are you getting home?”
“Oh, I walk to the bus stop and take that.”
He looks down at your crossed arms trying to keep you warm. “Aaron really won’t come get you?”
“I don’t want to inconvenience him.” You wave away the look of worry in his face. “I do this every night, it’s nothing I can’t handle.”
“Yeah, but… you shouldn’t have to.”
“Have a good night, Spence.”
You’ve never used a nickname with him before. He huffs a little before following your retreating figure, “Then let me give you a ride.”
You keep walking, “Really, Spence – I’ll be okay.”
“I know,” he says, “But let me help. I want to give you a ride. It’s cold.”
Your fingers feel like ice against your arms. You look in the direction of the bus stop before looking at the pleading in Spencer’s face.
“Okay,” you say quietly. “Thank you.”
Relief floods his expression, “Great, this way.”
He guides you to his car and even opens the passenger door for you. It’s a kind gesture that you aren’t used to. He turns on the heater and your seat warmer before exiting the parking lot.
You direct him to your poor excuse of a studio apartment. The pair of you speak pleasantries the entire way. The lighting design of the musical, the strategic sets that move quickly, the realistic prop hairspray, and things like that.
He didn’t notice how you cower in the seat. He thinks it’s just because you’re still cold.
“Is the gas station good about changing your schedule so you can be there on show nights?”
“Yes, they’re so kind about it,” you say, playing with your fingers. It was a nervous habit of yours – pinching, rubbing, and picking at them. “I switch with a usual day shifter.”
Spencer nods, “I – I’ve missed seeing you at our usual time.”
“Our usual time?” you laugh, like your gas station hangouts were scheduled playdates.
He smiles, embarrassed, “Yeah, I mean… your customer service is so excellent. How am I supposed to get a Kickstart when you’re not there?”
“You know there are dozens of other gas stations and convenience stores around here.”
“Yeah, but they don’t have you.”
Something beats loudly in your chest. It sends a waterfall of warm, fizzing fireworks into your stomach.
Your apartment building is in a scary part of LA – but it’s what you can afford. Aaron was hinting at moving in together just for the ease of splitting the rent. It did sound appealing when you could actually save a little for a car.
“Thanks again for the ride,” you say, unbuckling your seatbelt.
He looks nervous again, “Anytime. And… maybe we could exchange numbers – in case you need another ride from the theatre?”
You look at him warmly, “I’m not going to ask you to come grab me when you could be in a filming week.”
He shrugs his shoulders, “I would still come.”
With a small smile, you take out your phone and open a new contact. In the name slot you put ‘Glasses.’ Spencer switches your phones and puts his number in.
You smile wider as you put your name in the contact and put a little theatre emoji after it.
“Glasses?” he asks, handing you back your phone.
“Yeah, that’s…” you brush warm fingers with him as you accept your phone. “That’s what I called you when I noticed you as a regular at the gas station. I didn’t know your name, so I gave you one in my head.”
He seems overly please about that. He has to look away from you and smile. “That’s funny, I like it. What would you do if you saw me without glasses? It would be a whole new identify to you.”
“Very Clark Kent of you,” you laugh.
He suddenly removes his gold rimmed glasses and looks at you all serious. “You’re right, during the day I’m fighting crime with the Justice League and at night I refuel at the gas station.”
“Superman refuels with energy drinks?” you laugh, causally reaching over to snatch his glasses. “I don’t know if Krypton would approve.”
“No, no – Kryptonians thrive off extra energy. Sun energy and now caffeine energy.”
His eyes are a dark green-gray color. Maybe that’s just because it’s dark outside. But you can’t decide what color they actually are. They’re definitely not brown.
You raise the glasses to your eyes and look at him. “I didn’t realize Superman was so blind.”
“It’s not that bad,” Spencer laughs, looking at you fondly.
You return the glasses, “Drive safe. Thanks again for the ride. Text me when you get home safely.”
He waves you off, waiting until you’re able to unlock your door before driving away.
Inside your apartment, you look at the chipped walls and cracked ceiling. The musty, uncomfortable couch in front of the small tv atop a table you got free off a lawn. To the right is the tiny kitchen with only one counter and no dining table.
Rummaging through a cabinet, you find a tall plastic cup to put your carnation flowers into.
The bathroom is straight ahead, where you go into to get ready for bed.
The porcelain of the tub and sink have rust stains around the handles. The tile of the floor is broken in places and the dim light above is giving off an ugly yellow glow.
You open the mirror cabinet to grab what you need to brush your teeth. Brand names are all obscure as you did get the supplies from a dollar store down the street.
If you had a little more money, you would buy a face wash and face towels. But the essentials were good enough.
You cross the hall to get to your bed. Being a studio apartment, there isn’t a separate room for your bed. It lies on the floor behind the tv stand and in front of the only window in the whole place.
The queen mattress was the one thing you spent a little more money on. It doesn’t have a headboard or support to keep it off the ground, but it was comfortable and had nice periwinkle blue sheets.
You change into sage green pajamas with little daisies on them, climbing into your bed and fumbling for the phone charger next to the mattress.
As you plug your phone in, a text message comes in from Glasses.
“Just got home. You did amazing tonight! See you later this week.”
You heart his message and give him a thank you in reply.

The end of the week is approaching and you’re at the theatre again. Headset on, you hang in the tech booth, grabbing a few more safety pins, mic tape, and alcohol wipes.
The oversized fanny pack you love to wear across your chest is open and full of supplies. You stuff the microphone items inside, watching the stage from the view of the booth.
Tracy was beginning the song Welcome to the 60s. You turn on the microphone by your mouth.
“Head to the wings for quick change pretty please.”
A muffled reply comes through the headset, “On the way, (Y/N).”
You leave the tech booth and walk out of the audience room to the side entrance of the wings. Waiting on stage right, you hold Edna’s new dress for the song. Two stage crew members help by holding accessories and waiting to take off Edna’s current costume.
“Go mama, go, go go!”
Edna comes running off to stage right, tossing their purse to the stage crew member. They wiggle out of their simple purple plaid dress and step right into the sparkly pink dress you have waiting open on the floor.
You pull up the fabric as you hear the lyrics continue on stage.
“Don’t let nobody try to steal your fun, ‘cause a little touch of lipstick never hurt no one.
The future’s got a million roads for you to choose, but you’ll walk a little taller in some high-heeled shoes.”
You zip up the dress and readjust the mic pack on the suit strap beneath. Stage crew throws a new necklace on and a sparkle to the lip makeup. The other stage crew snugs a fuller wig onto the actor, starting to pin it down onto the wig cap. You hand a feather boa to the actor and help pin the new wig in.
“Come on out, hear us shout. Mama, that’s your cue!”
Just in time, you think, sending the actor back onto stage. It always felt like a close call, but the audience shouting their surprise and praise always felt like a reward.
You smile at the stage crew members and wave them off to help with set pieces. You then take the old purple plaid costume to the rack to keep it from wrinkling on the floor.
While in the dressing rooms you meet the actress playing Penny Pingleton, “Hey, sis – I noticed your mic tape not sitting so good on your cheek.”
She smiles worriedly, the action making the mic tape unstick from her face and the microphone dangle from her ear. “Just a little.”
You pull out an alcohol wipe and roll of tape from your pack. “There might just be too much makeup in the way.” You wipe the spot where the microphone sits on her cheek, fanning your hand to make the alcohol dry.
Cutting two pieces of tape, you line the microphone and stick it in place. The actress keeps her face straight, letting it adhere.
“Thanks, (Y/N).”
“Anytime.” You leave the dressing room to find the man playing Seaweed. His mic belt kept twisting beneath his costume.
You track him down and use safety pins to secure the mic belt to his undershirt. Now as he dances and changes, the mic pack will stay in place. He shares his gratitude and runs off to the next scene.
The rest of the show goes without a hitch. The audience claps during the bows, and you give your imaginary bow to the curtains.
You begin to clean the dressing rooms when you get a text. From Glasses.
“Hey, I’m at the entrance by the concessions when you’re done in the back.”
A smile creeps onto your face. He saw the show a second time? You text back, “I’ll be there in five minutes.”
You’re quick to clean up and organize the costumes before heading out. The front was still packed with audience members trying to talk and take pictures with the cast members. You push your way towards the concessions table to see Spencer there.
He was wearing a black Creed t-shirt, arms full of silly tattoos on total display. Instead of holding flowers, he’s holding a Diet Coke from the concessions. You grin, falling out of the crowd and into him for a hug.
He catches you and hugs you back. You feel the cold soda against your shirt.
“I can’t believe you came again!” You pull away, eyes shining. You’ve never had someone to meet outside the theatre after a show before.
He extends the drink he got for you. “I told you it was an excellent show. And I wanted to bring a friend to see it too.”
A woman stands beside him, “And he misses seeing you at the gas station every day.”
You miss how Spencer nudges the woman with his elbow. You were too busy recognizing her face.
“Oh my god – oh my fucking god,” you accidentally shake the soda as you wave your hands. “You’re Angela Giarratana!”
Her brown eyes widen ridiculously, “Um… yeah, I am.”
“You were on Nerdy Prudes Must Die!”
A smile replaces the surprise on her face, “Oh, yes! I was in that show last year. You really scared me there for a second.”
Spencer licks his lips, watching the excitement on your face. “I wondered if you’d seen anything from StarKid.”
“Well, I’m a theatre kid, aren’t I?” you say, “I literally have a Hatchetfield Nighthawks letterman jacket. It’s so nice to meet you, Angela. I’m (Y/N).” You lean into a hug and Angela returns it kindly.
“I know, Spencer’s talked about you.” She steps away and compliments the show, “You did a great job with the costume design. Spencer and I were timing the quick changes.”
“I am very proud of those,” you say excitedly. “I’m sorry, I can’t stop smiling. Thank you for coming to our show. How do you know Spencer?”
Angela smacks Spencer’s arm, “We work together. He’s more behind the scenes and I’m more on camera.”
“At Smosh? That’s awesome!”
“Yeah, it’s all right,” she says, looking to Spencer and then laughing. “I gotta be careful or Spencer won’t put me in any of the videos on Games.”
You open your soda, drinking it like you were parched all night. “Are you working on any more theatre projects?”
“Eh, not at the moment,” Angela says, folding her arms. “I’m spending most of my time on Smosh sets.” She eyes you for a second before saying, “Do you have a portfolio by chance?”
“A portfolio?” you ask, wiping your lip of soda. “Of what?”
Angela rubs at her chin, “Sketches of your costume designs or makeup aesthetics. Maybe a performing arts resume. Pictures of your work on stage.”
“Um…” you pull awkwardly on the edge of your shirt. “No, not formally. But I could pull something together.”
“That’d be great. I’d love to see more of your work.”
Spencer looks incredibly pleased with himself, biting on his lips. “Would you let me give you a ride home?”
Your eyes are still shining, flitting your gaze between the two friends. “Um… yeah – that’d be great.”
All of you walk outside the theatre and towards the parking lot. Spencer is quick to open the passenger door for you and you give an awkward thank you.
Angela rolls her eyes and climbs into the back. “He’s such a doofus.” You watch Spencer walk around the hood of the car to get into the drivers side.
“A what?” you laugh.
“Just watch him – you’ll notice sooner or later.”
He climbs in and uses the seatbelt, “Watch who?”
You clear your throat, “Joey Richter. He’s another actor on StarKid Productions. He’s super talented.”
Angela snickers in the back. “What was the first thing you watched on StarKid?”
“A Very Potter Musical,” you laugh, “Way back in the day.”
“Classic,” Angela says, folding her arms and slumping into the seat. “What brought you to LA?”
You play with your fingers. “I wanted to move out of my home state. And I wanted to get more into the arts. But it’s been hard to find stable work.”
“You’re telling me. That’s the life of an actor – just jumping from one gig to another.”
“It would be the dream,” you sigh, “To do this full time. I just wish I had a little more security with it. A stable income. Not to be afraid with how I’ll afford food every month.” You awkwardly laugh as you realize you might’ve said too much. “But I’m doing all right.”
Angela agrees, “It’s hard to do well in the arts.”
“Hard to be recognized,” Spencer says. “(Y/N) already does well in the arts.”
You smile, your cheeks warm. “When is your next filming week?”
“Next week,” Angela sighs, yawning big. “Which reminds me – I gotta pick up that new pair of glasses for the office.”
“Angela is super blind and never wears her glasses during shoots,” Spencer explains. “Especially on the games channel. She’s always squinting super bad at the tv whenever we’re playing a game.”
“And I’ve been doing just fine!” Angela says loudly, “I’ve been training my eyes to see that far.”
Spencer scoffs, “Yeah, and the compilations of you squinting are growing at an exponential rate because of it.”
“Shut up!” Angela yells.
You laugh at their antics. “Are you allowed to yell at your boss like that?”
Spencer looks in the rearview mirror, “Yeah, Angela. As your superior you need to treat me with a high level of respect. I expect a full written apology and a certain amount of groveling before you’re allowed back on the Games set.” His tone was serious, but by the wide comical look in his eye, you know he’s using hyperbole as a joke.
“The heads of Smosh are actually Ian and Anthony, so don’t you even pull that superiority card!”
You keep giggling at this funnier, more outspoken Spencer. Proof that he was very comfortable with this coworker and their workplace.
It sounds nice.

Angela sits in the passenger seat now, slumped into the door and leaning her forehead against the window.
“She’s really nice.”
“Yeah,” Spencer says quietly, thoughts still lingering on you.
Angela looks over at him and smirks. “You like her so fucking much. I knew you did when you wouldn’t shut up about her at the office, but damn – seeing you with her was nearly painful.”
“What are you talking about? I’m so subtle about it.”
“So you don’t deny it!” she sits up stick straight, so fast that the seatbelt locks into place and stops her from moving anymore.
Spencer flounders, “I – what – no, that’s not what I said!”
“You totally did you little fucker! You like her so much it hurts. You like her so much your cheeks are going to burst into flames. You like her so much you can’t get a full sentence out.”
“Angela, shut the fuck up – you don’t know what you’re talking about!”
She bounces in her seat, “I’m so subtle about it. I can’t believe you. You’ve been talking about this girl for almost a year. Of course you have a crush on her!”
“Angela, I swear to god, don’t ruin this for me.”
“How would I ruin this? I want my little Spencey to have true love. You have to ask her out.”
“Yeah, genius – you’re forgetting about a teensy little detail. She has a fucking boyfriend.”
Angela freezes, sitting back. “Right.” She bites her lip, “Should have made your shot earlier.”
“And risk looking like a creep asking a girl out at a gas station? No thank you.”
“Is you considering her for the production team on Smosh an elaborate way to play the long game with her?”
“No!” Spencer grips the steering wheel, sounding like a bickering sibling. “She has real talent, and I think she deserves the position.”
Angela holds up her hands, “All right, okay.” She side eyes him with raised brows, “… but you wouldn’t be upset if she suddenly became available and you could ask her out?”
He refuses to meet Angela’s eyes. “I’m not giving you the satisfaction by answering that question.”
“You basically just answered it,” she folds her arms, “You know… I can’t promise I can keep this from Amanda. Or Shayne.”
Spencer puts his elbow against the window and holds his temple.
“Or Chanse.”
“I figured.”
Angela gave him a sympathetic smile. “For what it’s worth – I think she has a real shot. We should get her portfolio to Ian and Anthony asap.”

You’re cleaning the counters at the gas station. It’s nearing the end of your shift, almost 6am. And Spencer hadn’t visited you like he usually did. It was actually making you worried.
You had spent the last few days collecting every piece of art and experience you had to compile a portfolio. It didn’t feel like a very thick folder, but it had every ounce of hard work from the last few years.
It sits within a blue cover under the registers, waiting for Spencer to come.
“Hey!” there he comes through the door. “I’m so sorry, we had an overnight shoot, and I forgot to tell you.”
You look confused, “Spence, you didn’t have any obligation to be here. We didn’t make any plans.”
“I know, but I usually…” he looks flustered and upset. “You know, you’re right. I’m sorry.”
You smile kindly, “It’s okay. I’m not angry.”
He runs a hand through his curly hair, his eyes considering you as you clean. “This early in the morning, we both look exhausted now.”
“Aw, we have matching dark circles under our eyes!” You go under the counter to grab the blue folder. “Here’s that portfolio Angela was asking about. I wasn’t sure how to get it to her, so maybe you could take it to work?”
“Um… yeah, for sure. Thanks.”
The bell above the door rings, signaling the appearance of a new customer. Usually at this point in the mornings, customers would come in for their sustenance before work. You’re focused on Spencer, unaware of the person walking towards you.
“(Y/N), let’s go.”
You turn your eyes around and see Aaron beelining for your counter.
“Oh, hey,” you say quietly, “You’re twenty minutes early.”
“And?”
This man was over six foot, broad shouldered, and unkempt. His eyes are lazy and hard pressed, his jaw tense as you contradict him.
You wring your hands, “I’m not allowed to leave until six.”
“Well, I’m here now. Let’s go.”
“That’s…” you suck in a breath. He smells like stale beer. “Let me clock out and tell my boss.” You round the counter and are quick to enter the back rooms.
Spencer stays where he is, holding the blue portfolio, and looking at Aaron with an air of disdain. It was not the first impression he was expecting when picturing your boyfriend.
“You waiting to buy something?” Aaron asks, frowning at the way Spencer’s looking at him.
“No, I was just…” he swallows. “I was just talking with (Y/N).”
Aaron squints his eyes, hands moving to his hips. “And you know her because?”
“Because we’re friends.”
“(Y/N) doesn’t have any friends.”
“Untrue, because I’m standing right here.”
Aaron flexes his jaw, “She hasn’t mentioned you before.”
“Yes, I have,” you reappear without your nametag and your purse now around your shoulder. “I’ve talked about him a couple times.” You stand beside Spencer and instantly feel the tension.
Aaron extends his hand like he wants to take yours. “If you did talk about him, I would have remembered. We’re leaving.”
You go to hold his hand, but he moves his to grab your arm, pulling you towards the door. You turn your head to mouth, “Sorry,” towards Spencer.
Spencer waves at you, his face placid and upset. He watches out the windows to see Aaron let you go on the sidewalk to get into the car yourself. He slams the car shut, neglecting his seatbelt, and squealing out of the parking lot.
Still upset, Spencer gets into his car and contemplates his next move. His instincts told him that you weren’t completely safe. He wonders if you and Aaron have moved in together yet – he was trying to pull the ‘cheaper rent’ card on that account.
It was blatantly clear that Aaron was gaslighting you. Within three minutes, he was pegged as an asshole.
Spencer pulls out his phone and sends you a text. “Nice seeing you today, hope you get some good sleep.”
He rubs hard at his face before driving off. He plans to show your portfolio to Ian and Anthony tomorrow.

You’re sitting on the couch, playing on your PlayStation, when someone knocks on the door. Enjoying the day off, you wonder what door-to-door salesman is at your house.
You open the door and a giant smile envelopes your face, “Spencer! You didn’t tell me you were going to visit.”
He take a breath, “Um… yeah, I wanted to ask you something and I couldn’t wait until you were on shift.”
You lean against the doorframe, biting your lip. “Well, I would invite you inside, but I have to warn you… it’s not very nice.”
“I don’t care,” he says matter-of-factly. “I just want to talk.”
“All right,” you say shyly, opening the door wide. You watch his reaction, already feeling embarrassment brewing in your stomach.
Spencer looks around for a second, taking in the minimal furniture and all around lackluster state of the structure. He zeros in on the old tv displaying your video game.
“Are you playing Red Dead Redemption 2?”
“Uh… yeah,” you say quietly, holding yourself and you walk into the living room. “It’s one of my favorites.”
Spencer smiles, finding it amazing to learn something new about you that he loves. “Nice horse.”
You laugh, sitting on the couch and grabbing your controller. Your cowboy character was riding a white horse in the middle of a river. “It’s the White Arabian you have to tame by Lake Isabella.”
“Is that… like the best horse or something?” Spencer comes to sit beside you, sinking into the musty couch.
“It’s the only elite Arabian horse that you can find in the wild.”
Spencer leans against the couch arm, resting his face in one hand. “I didn’t realize you were a gamer.”
“The more you know me, the more of a nerd I become.”
“Nothing wrong with that, you big nerd.”
You giggle, “What did you want to talk about?’
Spencer clears his throat. “I uh… I took your portfolio to work.”
“What did Angela think?”
“She thought it was all great. But um… a few others got a look at it too.” He shifts uncomfortably on the couch. “There’s this job opening on the production team, specifically on the Smosh main channel. But they would help with all the channels.”
You pause the game again and really look at him. “What is the position?”
“An assistant art coordinator. They help the art directors with creating sets, costumes, and character looks.”
“And what are the responsibilities?”
“They’re looking for someone to manage hair and makeup for Smosh skits and any character work on other channels. Most of the cast do it themselves, but we do need someone who specializes in prosthetics makeup. And you seem to have done that a lot in theatre. We also need someone to manage costume work – the upkeep of them.”
You swallow hard, arms slowly moving to hold yourself. “Do you know what the salary is?”
“I think it’s around 50k-60k. You’ll make between $24 - $28 an hour.”
You bite your cheek. “That’s great.” You look at your surroundings. This new job would be paying you over $10 more than you’re getting now. “Are you saying Smosh is interested in interviewing me for assistant art coordinator?”
Spencer nods his head. “That is basically what I’m saying.”
“Did you show your bosses my portfolio on purpose?” You lower your eyes but look at him through your lashes.
He takes a deep breath, stretching out on the couch. “Maybe. Maybe I thought you deserved a chance.” He looks at you seriously, “I think you’ve got some real talent, (Y/N). You should go for an interview.”
“I… I don’t know what to say.”
“Say you’ll do it.”
You look at him, “I’m suddenly super nervous.” A laugh escapes you, “I… I have to talk to Aaron about it.”
“Okay,” Spencer says with an edge. He tries to be respectful. “Have you two…”
“We’ve moved in together,” you say softly. “To make bills a little easier. And… and as a trial run, I guess. I’ll be able to save up for a car now.”
Spencer has a finger on the corner of his mouth. “Do you think you could make an interview this Thursday?”
You think for a second, “I’m sure Aaron would be okay with that. I’ll just talk to him about it tonight.”
He doesn’t seem happy about that statement. But instead of saying something he might regret, he points to the PlayStation. “Have you completed this game before?”
“Oh, yeah – maybe three times,” you pick up the controller again. “This time I’m trying to complete all of the side quests before finishing the main story.”
“You should be wearing a cowboy hat while playing.”
“That would be awesome,” you laugh. You look at him with sincerity, “Thank you for looking out for me, Spence. I appreciate the chance.”
He gives a close-lipped smile. “Always.”

You step off the bus and begin to walk down the street. Using your phone, you follow the directions that Spencer gave you.
The Smosh office was right around the corner.
You enter the building, pulling on the only pair of dress pants you own. You readjust the simple blouse to show off the single diamond necklace you wear around your neck. You hope it gives you a professional first impression.
The main entrance of the building shows a little receptionist desk and plush chairs to wait in. You advance the desk while noticing behind it are many tables and folding chairs – probably for lunches.
“Hello, how are you?” a nice lady at the desk says.
You wave shakily, “I’m good. I’m here for an interview with Mr. Hecox and Mr. Padilla.”
She seems to find you saying their surnames comical judging by the little smile on her face. But she gestures to the plush armchairs behind you. “Sure, just wait there and I’ll call them.”
You turn around and notice that behind the chairs is a large window showing a large kitchen. The lunch tables and folding chairs makes more sense.
“Thank you,” you say, looking down at the name plate, “Selina.” You sit down and holding your famously large fanny pack in your lap. It gives you something to hold with your fidgeting hands.
Now sitting, you can see the wide windows behind Selina’s desk. There’s a long conference table in there with a television and speakers on a stand. There’s a phone speaker in the middle of the table for any people that are being called in remotely.
Behind the conference table is a little sitting area with a couch and armchair. A couple tables and folding chairs are in the rest of the open space. It’s probably a big room for any meetings with teams or big groups of people.
“(Y/N) Bennett?” someone asks. You jump and stand to see two men coming around the corner.
One is taller with dark, wavy styled hair, a nose ring, and cool tattoos spidering up his neck. He has a great smile and just radiates a natural energy you like.
The other is slightly shorter with brown hair in a classic cut. He has a scruffy beard and black square glasses. He gives very much dad energy with how he’s dressed.
“Yes,” you say rather breathlessly. “I’m (Y/N) Bennett.”
“I’m Anthony,” the taller says, “And this is Ian.”
You shake hands with them, Ian gesturing to the conference room. “We’ll meet in here.”
The three of you walk into the room and take seats around the long table. “It’s nice to meet you,” you say quietly, “Thank you for offering me an interview.”
“For sure,” Anthony says, leaning forward in his chair. Ian sits and immediately starts spinning back and forth. “We saw your portfolio and were really impressed with your work.”
“Thank you,” you say eagerly.
Ian clears his throat, “Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?”
“Well, I’m living here with my boyfriend. I’ve lived here for about two years. Before that I was in Nevada, just outside of Vegas. My family is still there,” you say quietly. “I’ve been a theatre and fine arts student all my life. I’ve been doing community and school productions since second grade. I have experience in both stage acting and in tech behind the scenes.”
“Which do you prefer?” Anthony asks.
You hold onto your fanny pack, “Right now, probably tech. I really enjoy designing costumes and putting characters together. Sometimes I do miss acting though.”
“What do you enjoy about art design?” Ian questions.
You focus on his chair spinning back and forth. “I’m a fan of storytelling. I think one of the greatest talents a person can have is in telling a story, no matter the platform. If I can be a part of that process, I’d enjoy every second. I want to show the story in costumes, hair, and makeup. It’s the most expressive way to describe a person or character.”
“Well said,” Anthony nods. “How would you manage a set when coordinating those things?”
“I would need to see the costume closet to know how to care for it. Organization is key, ensuring you don’t lose any pieces. You’d need a costume rack on set and some essentials, like safety pins, apparel tape, a lint roller, things like that. Makeup vanities will need to be disinfected and cleaned after use, brushes clean and organized. Prosthetics and stage makeup would need to be cared for to make sure we don’t share any germs and possible infections. The same goes for any hair and wig essentials.”
Ian seems a little lost in your explanation, just impressed that you were on top of it. “You have a fine arts degree, is that right?”
You nod, voice still quiet with the nerves. “That’s right. I got a bachelor’s in fine arts at Utah Tech University in St. George, Utah.”
“Is that close to where you’re from in Nevada?” Anthony asks.
You smile, “Yeah, it’s just over an hour away. It has a well known outdoor theatre called the Tuacahn Amphitheatre. I helped with a few tech things during summer shows. And then I acted at the college.”
“What shows did you act in?” Anthony asks further.
You play with your fingers. “We did Footloose, Addams Family, The Drowsy Chaperone, Elf: The Musical, Measure for Measure, and Much Ado About Nothing.”
Anthony whistles, “You did Shakespeare?”
“I love Shakespeare,” you say. “Much Ado About Nothing is my favorite play.”
“You are a major theatre kid,” Ian says, “Why don’t you act anymore?”
You squeeze your fanny pack, “I’ve gotten a little camera shy the last couple years. I prefer helping with quick changes and fixing any mic tape mishaps.”
You take a turn asking some questions about their art department and typical filming schedule. You learn about their expectations for the job and what the salary would be. It was exactly as Spencer had said.
Ian and Anthony share a look with each other before leaning forward. Anthony looks at you kindly, “Would you mind if we conference for a minute? We want to give you an answer today.”
You widen your eyes, “Yeah, of course. Thank you.”
The pair stand and excuse themselves to discuss things outside the room. You’re left in the swivel chair, picking at your fingers and praying that the interview went well. It would be incredible to be given a job that grants you the security and stable income you wanted.
There was a chance to have friends here. Spencer and Angela would be here. You would be storytelling in little comedy sketches. You’d be a part of a team that designed characters. You’d be in charge of ensuring faces weren’t shiny on camera, hair was in place, and clothes looked good.
This could be a home for you.
It takes almost ten minutes for Ian and Anthony to return. They come back with two others that are introduced as Cassie and Erin. They are art director and assistant art director for all productions.
You would be working beneath them should you be offered the position.
More questions are asked by the newcomers, and you find them to be very kind and artistic like yourself. You agree on many fronts, having many things in common. You would be happy to be working in their department.
Ian and Anthony both have smiles on their faces when they say:
“(Y/N), we want to formally offer you the position of assistant art coordinator. Responsible for hair and makeup, and the costumes of the cast. You’ll be our main reference for any special effects makeup and prosthetics. And you’ll help coordinate for all four channels.”
Tears start to form in your eyes. “Really?”
Cassie and Erin had faces full of sympathy. Cassie was covering her face with her hands. Erin was folding their arms and smiling.
Ian was standing their awkwardly, looking at your emotional reaction, but Anthony was quicker to ask. “Is that a yes?”
You laugh tearily, “Yes! Yes, I’d love to take the position. Thank you guys so much. I’m so excited – I don’t know what to say other than thank you.”
They all clap momentarily, Ian announcing, “Then we should call everyone to the lunchroom and make introductions.”
“We’ll have Selina bring up contracts to sign,” Anthony says, gesturing to the door. “You want to follow us?”
You nod enthusiastically, shaking hands with everyone on the way out. There are lots of thank yous and congratulations.
Cassie, Erin, and Ian go to round up cast and crew to the lunch tables you spotted earlier. Anthony goes to speak with Selina at the receptionist desk.
You exit the conference room, wiping tears away and clutching your fanny pack.
Spencer was there, pacing by the plush armchairs you sat in earlier. He has his arms crossed, one hand at his mouth, tracing his lips in a nervous gesture.
At your arrival, his head whips to you, eyes wide at the tears running down your face. He looks so afraid, unsure of how the interview went. But he might’ve misinterpreted your tears.
“(Y/N),” he says softly, “What… what did they say?”
He didn’t even notice the other people gathering at the lunch tables.
You walk towards him, still trying to wipe at your face, “Spence.”
He wants to hug you desperately then. He wants to comfort you. And he wants to hurt whoever decided to make you cry.
You throw your arms around his neck, burying your face there. He holds you back, still at a loss as to what the final verdict was.
“(Y/N)!” you hear Anthony, “Get over here!”
Spencer still holds you as you whisper to him, “I got the job.”
He pulls away and holds your waist, “What?”
“I got the job,” you whisper more excitedly. “They’re about to announce it to everyone.” You flounce away to stand at a counter with a few mini fridges, addressing a group of cast and crew. You notice Angela standing in the crowd.
She gives you two thumbs up and you wave back.
Spencer walks over just as Ian begins to talk.
“Hey, guys! We wanted to introduce our newest member of Smosh. This is (Y/N) Bennett!”
Anthony continues, “She will be working in the art department as an assistant art coordinator. She’ll be our head of character design and management of costumes, hair, and makeup.”
The crowd begins clapping and shouting their congratulations. Spencer joins them, standing next to Angela and a few others.
Unbeknownst to the pair of you, some cast and crew were sharing looks. People you hadn’t met yet were winking at each other. They knew full well how much Spencer wanted you to get this job.
You wave at everyone, “Hello! I’m so excited to meet you all and start working on these projects.”
Everyone breaks apart to introduce themselves.
Angela brings over a number of people, “Hey, (Y/N).” She says, “Here are some of our castmates.”
A tall woman in a beautiful jumpsuit says, “I’m Amanda, welcome to the Smosh family.”
“I’m Shayne,” a fit blonde man shakes your hand, “And this is Courtney.”
“Hi,” a blonde woman then shakes your hand, “It’s nice to meet you.”
Angela sticks her head in, “Those two are married.”
You nod, giggling, “Wonderful.”
“I’m Chanse,” a curly haired man says, giving you a hug, “Welcome to the team.”
A tall man with a great mustache waves, “I’m Tommy!”
“Hi!” you say, “It might take me a while to remember all your names. Thank you for being so welcoming. I’m so excited to start.”
“Spencer’s told us a lot about you,” Amanda says with a cheeky smile.
You look toward Spencer’s rosy face. “All good things, I hope.”
“Oh, definitely,” Shayne laughs, “He has nothing but praise for you.”
Spencer ignores the immediate retort that the single worst thing about you is your boyfriend. “You guys need to calm down.”
“Can we give you a tour?” Amanda asks, taking your arm, “The office has a lot of sets and rooms.”
Courtney appears on your other side, “We can show you the art department and the costumes closet!”
“And the makeup vanities,” Chanse says, already leading the way, “There are a couple by the sets, but there is one in the green room where Angela takes her naps.”
“Hey!” Angela instantly retorts, “Hey, hey, hey… uncalled for!”
Amanda scoffs, “But true.”
Angela snorts, “Yeah, sure.”
You are dragged away by Amanda and Courtney, Chanse and Angela still bickering along the way.
Spencer stays where he is with Shayne. The latter having a very knowing smirk on his face. Spencer ignores him as long as he can.
“Have you ever been told that you shouldn’t make faces because you’ll be stuck that way?”
Shayne chortles, “I’m just curious how you feel about this.”
“Clearly you already have a theory.”
“I do, based purely on the last eleven months of you pining over this girl.”
“I am incapable of pining.”
Shayne wheezes, “Yeah, sure. What do you call bringing up (Y/N) whenever possible, talking through ways to introduce yourself to her, workshopping conversations with me to get to know her…”
“All of those things were in confidence.”
“And all blatant examples of pining over a woman you’ve grown attached to!”
Spencer licks his lips, watching you being dragged by Angela towards the pods of employee desks. “I don’t… I can’t do anything about it now.”

I was so happily surprised by this. This film went through a fantastic puberty between the leaked script and the screen. The main points to note:
-No, Ellen is not hot for Count Orlok. She and Thomas are 110% in love. There are even certain Harker-flavored quotes thrown in to prove as much. (Details under the cut.)
-Count Orlok is a terrifying bastard and a half. Significantly more imposing than classic Orlok’s spindly rigor mortis-stiff figure and only wearing a sliver of Dracula’s performative charm. He is a Devil-Death archetype playing a monster who operates in deceit and contracts to wring out what he wants. That and a lot of corpses.
-This film is so beautiful. No gothic touch is skipped.
In sum, I more than like this film. I love it. It isn’t perfect, because no film can be, but damn. I am so proud of this nightmare you made, Bobby Egg.
SPOILERS FOR Nosferatu (2024) BELOW
-Getting some cons out of the way. There are points where a few of the actors lean maybe a bit too heavy on the ham-and-cheese in their deliveries (I’ll not blame the kids, they’re very young, but yeesh. That’s some cartoon acting.)
Yes, the g-slur is still used; though while I wish it hadn’t appeared in Eggers’ script at all, it does make sense within the context of the setting, i.e. Thomas and the Innkeeper probably only having the one word they know, same as in Dracula. And yes, naked teenage girl-on-a-horse does happen for the vampire hunt scene. Whee.
-Now, an early pro: Eggers nixed the ‘hot teen girl tries to pickpocket Thomas’ bit, and the ‘land of phantoms and thieves’ line never happens. All that happens after Thomas wakes in the inn—post witnessing the vampire slaying in the local graveyard, mud on his shoes to prove it was real—is he discovers himself utterly alone. No people, no horse. Cue the long walk.
-Ellen doing the ‘Come to me,’ bit early on is her in adolescence. It’s revealed that her Weird Girl elements have been turned up to 11, tragic lonely past included (replete with dad threatening to send her to a madhouse), and her prayer was just for company. The psychic ping was picked up by Orlok, who took advantage, turning an isolated and desperate barely-more-than-a-kid’s wish into a ‘covenant.’
-Thomas was met not long after this, cue them being genuinely in love <3
-Knock Does Not Jerk Off On Screen. If he does, his back is to us, and Little Knock is covered with some occult tablet or suchlike while he’s doing his ritual business. Also he kills a guy in his cell. Using his teeth.
-Castle time! Thomas is greeted by a driverless carriage at a crossroads and seems to be hypnotized into stepping in. A lot of things Thomas does once in Orlok’s territory seem to very clearly have psychic puppet strings attached. That and some increasing terror on Thomas’ part. There is no warm Dracula-style welcome from Orlok when he arrives, but a terse and strange leading to the dinner table where paperwork is demanded.
- We get a glimpse of this version of the Count’s ego. Thomas calls him sir. Orlok demands Thomas address him as my lord. And then we get the bread cutting scene. Thomas’ thumb bleeds. Orlok get far too interested. His voice, a very guttural and rasping bass, turns into something closer to an animal trilling and growling. Thomas is paralyzed beside the fire; cut away as Orlok closes in.
-Ellen and Anna Harding have a bit of a Mina and Lucy deal going on at the beach. It’s sweet <3 (Prepare for pain </3)
- Orlok starts getting tricky. He 1) borrows (steals) Ellen’s locket from Thomas and 2) Tricks Thomas into signing a contract to ‘sell��� Ellen/break their marriage via a strange contract in a language Thomas can’t read, with Orlok using the prop of some gold to imply that this is merely a document in ~his native language~ to complete the property sale. Thomas signs, less for the gold than to be gone from the castle and back to Ellen…only for Orlok to insist Thomas is not well. He must stay the night.
- No mind games here. Just Thomas pleading to leave and Orlok’s parting word being that he will stay, and that he will obey his orders.
-Orlok has already chomped Thomas on the tiddy as of last night. Next night, after Thomas almost lands a blow on him in the coffin—Orlok sleeps with his Orcock out in the box, by the way, alongside several rats—Orlok wills Thomas to unlock the door he shut between them. Cue Thomas being tranced onto the bed, pounced on, and basically dry-humped by Orlok as he drinks Thomas all but dry. Thomas is left that way, only to be woken by Orlok’s wolves—he has those too!—and go clambering out the window, dropping to the river below.
-Orlok makes Ellen’s life hell. Holy fuck. The 1838 quality ‘medicine’ definitely doesn’t help—corsets for correcting posture, draining blood because there’s too much in there, binding to the bedposts to stop sleepwalking, general drugging etc etc—but FUCK. Lily-Rose Depp did a great and terrible job of reproducing shaking fits and some of the faces and sounds she made had me thinking I might choke on my own tongue. And for all the sexually provocative poses/noises that happen, every time she comes out of it it’s clear that she hates this. It’s on par with psychic rape.
-The only times we see Ellen respond positively~ to Orlok’s dream-advances is when she’s telling Thomas about the ‘marrying Death’ dream where everyone died and she was deliriously happy and then the infamous trailer line about Thomas not being able to satisfy her as Orlok can~~~
Well guess what.
Guess fucking what.
That was Orlok leaning on her brain. The same way he did to Thomas when, eventually, after the nuns rescue him and pray the plague/vampirism out and he makes it home while half-dead, he lays in bed with Ellen and gets a panic attack combined with Orlok’s image being grafted over Ellen’s face…
…a reverse of the illusion Orlok gave him in the castle, with Thomas imagining it was Ellen on top of him instead. The effect terrifies Thomas all over again and he unwittingly tosses Ellen away, I can't breathe, get off of me, get off!
-Orlok does his murder snacking. Knock, who escaped, offers to find and kill Thomas to please the Count, literally on his hands and knees. Orlok calls him a dog and backhands him, insisting Ellen must be given, not stolen.
-Orlok has already visited Ellen by this time. He presses her to keep her deal with him. She tells him, flat out, I abhor you. In response, Orlok grabs her and chucks her like a ragdoll in a rage. He fumes, telling her he will give her three nights to pledge herself to him, and in the meantime he will start killing. (RIP to Anna and her little girls, the latter of whom ORLOK KILLS IN FRONT OF HER, EATING THEIR THROATS OUT AS SHE ENTERS THEIR ROOM.)
-Before all that, he spins bullshit about Thomas ~selling her to him for mere gold~. A technical truth that Ellen, mid-Orlok spell, spits back at Thomas amid a rage, along with details that are likewise based in only a granule of reality; but which Orlok did not mention in their scene together. Things like Thomas being weak and childish, that he ‘fell into Orlok’s arms like a fainting woman.’ Interesting choice of spin there, Orlok. But whatever.
This all culminates in what is either reality or a dream or a blend of both as Thomas makes sudden desperate love to her, Ellen weirdly heady about it, telling him yes yes yes they will show Orlok their love. Cue her snapping back to full cognizance (awake? dreaming?) as her eyes and mouth spurt blood in a vision. She collapses in fear and tears as Thomas holds her. AND THEN:
-Ellen. Drops. The I am unclean line. She wants Thomas away from her, she is not worthy, she puts him in danger.
-Thomas goes full Jonathan and clings to her. Nonsense. I love you. I love you. I love you.
-V i n d i c a t i o n
-Anyway.
-Dafoe-Von Franz-Van Helsing is a kooky science occultist. Finds a book that Knock had which fills the role of highlighting Orlok as Solomonari (hey, Scholomance shout out!) and Knock as a would-be beneficiary. Also includes the ‘maiden offers her body and blood to the monster to kill it via sunrise’ bit.
-While he reads this, he does NOT actually spell any of these details out to Ellen when they have their secret mini talk about tricking Thomas into hunting for the coffin with him and Sievers. He gives her a big ~you're the only one who can save us magic maiden martyr~ pep talk, but that's it. Meanwhile, Ellen was already preparing to offer herself to save Thomas and whoever’s left in Wisborg. Not the same kind of agency as the original, but still better than I was expecting.
-Harding, Thomas’ rich friend whose wife and children got drinked to death, dies of plague in the family tomb. They burn the bodies.
-In the ruin Orlok bought, cue the iron stake slamming down as they open the coffin..! But whoops. Knock’s in the box, not Orlok. Von Franz says Ellen offering herself is the only way~ Thomas doesn’t waste time throttling him, just makes a run for their home.
-Too late, of course. Orlok is there (with a very cool homage to the original stalking shadow silhouette routine) and Ellen welcomes him. While they are both naked in bed and it’s implied that they are/or intend to have sex, the bulk of the scene centers on Orlok taking Ellen’s blood from her breast. No clear shot of the Orcock on screen for that bit—Bobby Egg saved that pleasure for the Count flashing Thomas at the castle.
-Orlok’s death throes. Are so. Fucking. Cool. Definitely up there with one of the best vampiric demises I’ve ever seen on film. No spoilers there. You’ve got to see it.
-Heartbreak o’ Clock as Thomas bursts in just as Orlok has died and as Ellen is dying under him. There’s time for them to hold hands. And then she’s gone.
-We close on Von Franz popping up with some poetic soliloquy shit and a bunch of lilacs. The final beat is an overhead shot of Ellen, the Maiden, laying under the now-skeletal Orlok, as Death. Looks almost like a painting. Unlike the implication in the leaked script, she does not look happy/at peace. Simply asleep. The End.
-Other important notes:
1) Orlok has a little combover’s worth of hair on top and mighty and powerful ‘stache. Not Dracula-white, but it is there. Finally.
2) The guy who plays Dr. Sievers has Alan Rickman’s voice. If he isn’t in opera, he should be.
3) I was too late to get a popcorn coffin box. I shall be in mourning until the New Year.
4) Bobby Egg if you can give me one more gift, let it be a deleted scene of Thomas beating Von Franz over the head with the iron stake, please and thank you <3

How do you not suffer like soul-crushing burn out and exhaustion from making so much content so quickly? Like that seems like something that would degrade the quality of your work over time and basically incinerate a person. How do you avoid that?
For Scarlet Lady specifically, I didn't even start publishing pages until I had the entire "Origins" episode drawn, lined, and "colored". Back then, I was posting two pages a week, so that bought me about a month to work on the next part. I self-imposed a rule that I needed to draw at least one new page for every page that was posted, so I was never less than 7 pages ahead.
At one point, I changed how I was planning chapters - in "Origins - Part 1", "Origins - Part 2", "Stormy Weather", and "Bubbler" were all made using my old method of "write a page when you think of a joke" method. When I got to "Lady Wifi", I started planning the whole chapter start to finish with an overall plot and then making the script with jokes after the general episode was planned, which overall sped up my work.
Soon I was full episodes ahead of what was being posted. I was able to increase posting to three times a week and it wouldn't bite into my headway.
When I hit "Volpina", my favorite episode to work on, I had so much fun that I was finishing two pages a day. And then it happened again in "Dark Cupid". And again and again and before I knew it, I was like half a season ahead of what was being posted.
When I went through bouts of burnout, I had plenty of headway to take a break. I know mine isn't a perfect model to replicate for everyone, and there's certainly pitfalls (like canon adding something that changes a joke I made two months ago, or new lore dropping, or not being able to immediately implement reader feedback where it's warranted), but for burnout, it worked for me.

richard is one of your regulars, calling at least twice a week. he likes to imagine that you’re his long-lost girlfriend, reaching out from some parallel universe. you let him ramble, your voice smooth and coaxing, playing into his fantasy like a script you know by heart. a light laugh here, a soft hum there, the occasional breathy moan when it fits the moment.
“anytime, boo,” you reply, fingers already grazing the disconnect button. “take care of yourself, okay?”
the line clicks off, leaving a brief silence that feels heavier than it should. you exhale, stretching your arms above your head as you try to shake off the remnants of his voice. just another call. just another night.
soft light spills through the corners of your room, golden and warm against the pale lavender of your walls. the curtains billow lazily, carried by a breeze that whispers through the cracked window. outside, the city hums—a distant siren wailing, cars rolling down the street below, someone leaning on their horn too long, too loud.
at your desk, you lean forward, catching your reflection in the mirror perched precariously against a stack of books. sticky lip gloss catches the lamplight, glinting like glass. your lashes look decent—lifted enough to remind you of your own femininity. normally, you wouldn’t bother. no one can see you, after all. but it helps, this small ritual. it’s armor in a way, a mask you slip behind before stepping into this role.
“alright,” you mutter, rolling your neck to release the tension settling in your shoulders. “one more call and i’m done.”
the surface beneath your elbows is cluttered—textbooks splayed open, scribbled lab reports fighting for space with overdue bills. it’s not glamorous, but it pays. and it’s enough, for now.
you adjust your headset, letting the padded cups press comfortably against your ears, and clear your throat. the practiced warmth creeps back into your voice as the phone chimes again, flashing another number across the screen.

“hello, and thank you for calling the pulse network. this is star speaking.” your voice drops an octave, soft and inviting, the words sliding out like honey. “who do i have the pleasure of speaking with tonight?”
there’s a pause on the other end—static filling the silence like a breath held too long. then, a voice cuts through, low, smooth, and distinctly feminine.
“uh…hi?” she sounds hesitant, her voice fraying at the edges like she’s second-guessing herself. “is this…is this a-uh…hotline for…you know?”
your brows knit for a moment before relaxing. most callers know exactly what they want, their voices heavy with intent. but her hesitation feels different. delicate, almost.
“that depends,” you say, leaning forward slightly, your tone light and playful. “what are you looking for, my love?”
she exhales sharply, and you can hear the faint sound of movement—like she’s pacing, the rhythm of her footsteps soft and uneven.
“honestly?” she says after a beat, her voice quieter now. “i don’t even know why i called. jus’ bored, i guess. curious. didn’t think this would even work.”
a smile tugs at your lips, though you bite it back. calls like these are rare, but you don’t mind them. there’s something refreshing about the uncertainty, the lack of pretense.
“well,” you murmur, letting your voice wrap around the words like a velvet ribbon, “we’re here now. go ahead, tell me whatever’s on your mind. no pressure.”
there’s a pause, long enough that you glance at the timer on the screen, wondering if she’s about to hang up. but then she sighs again, the sound softer this time, like she’s giving in.
“is it weird that i’m calling?” she asks, her voice dipping into the quiet like it’s unsure of its place.
“no judgment here, love. everyone has their reasons.” your response is soft, easy, laced with practiced charm. but something about her feels different.
“i don’t even know mine.”
the line falls into silence again, thick and heavy, broken only by the sound of her breathing—steady, almost meditative. it’s the kind of silence that feels like it’s waiting for you to fill it, but instead, you let it linger, listening.
“what’s your name?”
you blink, caught off guard. most callers don’t ask that unless it’s part of the fantasy they’re crafting. most don’t care to know.
“well, what do you want it to be?” you counter, your voice tipping into something playful.
she laughs softly, the sound low and throaty, curling through the line like smoke. “no, that’s not what i asked. i wanna know your name.”
there’s a pause as you weigh her words, the sincerity behind them.
“star,” you say finally, keeping it professional, your tone steady. “you can call me star.”
“what’s your real name?”
her question lands heavier than it should. it’s not forceful, not even intrusive. just curious. like she’s asking for a story rather than a fact.
you hesitate, fingers tracing the edge of your desk absentmindedly. something about her voice makes you want to give in, but you push the temptation aside, slipping easily into deflection.
“you know, most people don’t ask me that,” you murmur. “they usually want to know what i look like, what i’m wearing. things like that.”
“guess i’m not most people, then.”
“come on, you’re telling me you’re not even a little curious?”
she chuckles, warm and low, the kind of laugh that sticks in your chest. “okay, i’ll bite. what are you wearing, star?”
you smirk, leaning back in your chair as the city hums faintly through the open window.

“where’d you get it?”
“some victoria’s secret around my city. they were having a sale.”
“cute.” her voice dips, carrying a hint of a smile. “now, back to my question.”
you roll your eyes, though there’s no edge to it. she’s persistent, you’ll give her that.
“you’re just gonna have to call me star. can’t give you my name. not tonight, sorry sweetheart.”
“no, it’s okay.” she pauses, then repeats it, like she’s trying it on. “well, star.” there’s something deliberate about the way she says it, slow and careful, testing its weight. “i’m billie.”
her name sits soft and sure in the air, settling between you like it belongs.
“you seem like a billie.”
“do i?”
“mhm,” you hum, leaning forward against the desk. “so, billie. what do you want to talk about?”
“hmm.” she draws the sound out thoughtfully, the silence stretching just long enough to make you wonder if she’ll answer. “why do you do this?”

“like me?”
the corner of your mouth quirks up, her words pulling at something playful in you.
“you tell me. are you interesting?”
“guess that depends.” she pauses, her voice curling with quiet amusement. “you think i’m interesting so far?”
“so far? i’ll give you a solid maybe.”
her laughter spills through the line, warm and unexpected, and it lingers in your room long after it fades.
“oh really? how long have you been doing this?”
“for about…” you pause, eyes flicking up to the ceiling like the answer might be scrawled there. “for about a little over a year now.”

you chuckle, the sound warm and easy. “it is, isn’t it? i don’t know, i don’t mind it though. all i do is answer the phone. sometimes i do schoolwork, cook—small things like that. not like i necessarily have to be fully present for it, as long as i’m paying attention, you know?”
“you’re in school? just exactly how old are you?”
“wait—before we continue, you’re aware it’s a dollar seventy-five per minute, right?”
“uhh, i wasn’t, but i don’t mind it.”
“ooh, so you’re rich then?”
she laughs, a low, honeyed sound that settles in your chest. “i wouldn’t say that. i’d say i’m… comfortable.”
“only rich people say they’re comfortable. but to answer your question, i’m twenty, in my junior year. babe, you?”
“okay, not bad. i’m twenty-three. though i did think you were much older.”
you snort, rolling your eyes even though she can’t see it. “not bad? we’re practically the same age.”
“mm, i got about three years on you, so… no,” she laughs, her voice carrying a teasing lilt. “what are you majoring in?”
“criminology. mainly forensics and things like that.”
“that’s so fucking cool. so you’re like those people on tv who examine bodies and shit?”
“yeah, but doing it in real life is way different than it looks on tv.” you close your eyes, the memory of your first dissection flashing briefly. “especially lab work. but you get used to it after a while.”
“still, that’s badass. you must be super smart.”
the compliment catches you off guard, heat crawling up your neck. “i guess you could say that,” you mutter, a quiet smile tugging at your lips.
the conversation flows easier after that, like water finding its way downhill. you don’t even realize when you’ve moved to your bed, your headset cast aside as her voice fills your room through the speaker.
she asks you everything—your favorite movies, the hobbies that keep you up at night, the kind of music that makes your soul hum. the questions are simple but intimate, slipping past your usual defenses like she’s known you for years.
and you answer her. honestly, without hesitation. there’s something about her voice, warm and unhurried, that pulls the truth out of you.
you find yourself smiling, more than you have in days, fingers absentmindedly playing with your hair as you lean into the sound of her. it feels oddly intimate—like a late-night call with someone who’s already carved out a space in your life.
“so,” she asks after a lull, her voice soft but curious, “what’s your favorite movie?”
you grin, closing your eyes as you let the answer roll off your tongue. “pulp fiction. it’s a classic, don’t judge me.”
“no judgment. i respect it. but you gotta admit, it’s a little basic.”
“oh, and you’re not basic? let me guess—you’re gonna say something artsy like ‘a clockwork orange’ or whatever.”
“wrong. mine’s ‘the shining.’”
“oh, so you’re a horror girl. noted.”
she laughs, the sound warm and easy, and you realize you don’t want the conversation to end. not yet. not with her voice lingering in your room like this.
“what about you?” you murmur, breaking the soft rhythm of silence that had settled between you.
“hm? what about me?” her voice lilts, curious but guarded.
“what do you do? like for work?”
there’s a pause, long enough that you wonder if she’s going to sidestep the question entirely. but then she exhales, the sound quiet, like she’s carefully letting something go.
“i’m a musician,” she says finally, her words tentative, like they might break if handled too roughly. “or i guess i was… i teach music now.”
her admission catches you off guard, a flicker of something vulnerable passing through the connection. but you don’t press her, sensing that whatever she’s offering is enough for now. instead, you let the conversation drift, carried by the quiet ebb and flow of her voice.
the hours blur like watercolors, the world outside fading until there’s only her.
eventually, her tone softens, the edges of her words rounding with sleep. “it’s getting late. i should let you go,” she murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper.
you glance at the alarm clock on the wall, the soft red digits blinking 3:35 a.m. back at you. exhaustion tugs at you, but the thought of ending the call feels heavier than it should.
“but…” her hesitation pulls you back to her. “can i call you again? i had a really good time.”
your heart stumbles over itself, a small hitch in your chest. “yeah, of course you can.” your voice dips into something softer, something closer to truth. “i had a good time too.”
“great. goodnight, star.” there’s a smile in her voice, light and unguarded, and it lingers in the air even after she’s gone.
“goodnight, billie.”
the line goes quiet, and for a moment, you sit there, the warmth of her voice still brushing against you like an afterglow.
you slip off your bed, padding into the bathroom to wash your face and brush your teeth. the cool water shocks your skin, but it doesn’t chase away the heat curling low in your stomach.
when you return to your room, the lamp clicks off with a soft snap, plunging the space into shadows broken only by the shifting colors of your tv. you slide under the covers, the faint hum of a late-night rerun filling the silence. the images blur on the screen, but all you can think about is her voice, the way it clung to the edges of the night, soft and sure.
a ding pulls you from your thoughts. your phone glows faintly on the nightstand, and you reach for it, the sudden brightness making you blink.

The Engineer
Part 1
I catch a glimpse of the pilot as she is wheeled towards the med bay. Her eyes have that telltale glaze of just having been wrenched out of herself.
I've never spoken a single word to her, but for a moment as the gurney slides by, those eyes briefly clear, ice blue pinning me to the spot. She raises an emaciated arm and her hand almost seems to beckon to me before something in the gurney clicks and whirs and she slips back into catatonia.
That brief moment of clarity, that piercing gaze, unsettles me. She recognized me.
It's neural bleed. I know it has to be. She doesn't know me, but Morrigan does.
Good god. In the pilot's present state of post combat haze, she probably doesn't even know where she ends and the machine begins.
Does neural bleed work both ways? Is it her head that I'm about to climb into?
My wrist strap buzzes. I have a job to do and I am late.
The pilot is a problem for the med team and the psychs.
The machine is my problem.
I hurry down the corridor, keeping my head down, avoiding the eyes of every passerby.
I don't like people.
I don't like how their eyes follow me. I don't like the whispered gossip that follows me.
One of the techs is waiting for me at the vestibule.
I don't know his name.
All clear, he says to me. Time to work your magic.
He says it without sarcasm. Others have been less kind.
Even so, he can't quite hide the leer as I strip down to the skinsuit. I don't have the physique of a pilot. My body hasn't been subjected to the stresses that ravage their bodies. Unlike them, I have fat and muscle and the skinsuit clings to every curve of my body.
I force a cursory smile and try to forget him as I walk barefoot to my destination.
The vestibule is small, windowless. It's impossible to assess the scale of the machine from here. The only part visible to me is roughly four square meters of pitted and scarred metal plating framing the access hatch and the pilot's cradle beyond.
B0-987T the stenciled lettering reads. And below, in flowing script, is “The Morrigan”.
She's a Javellin class, medium weapons fire support unit. She isn't meant to be on the front lines in a skirmish, but one-on-one, she can hold her own against a Wraith. Which is exactly what happened only a few hours ago.
I place a bare palm on the bulkhead. She thrums with some distant vibration. Her reactor is still online, still in the early stages of drawdown as she transitions to dock power.
“Hey beautiful,” I say to her.
I think of the pilot. I think of piercing blue eyes and I think of neural bleed.
I flinch my hand away.
The tech looks at me, asks if I'm alright. I'm fine, I tell him.
I climb through the hatch and into the cradle.
I feel like an interloper here. The cradle isn't calibrated for my body. Everything still smells like the pilot. Mingled with the smell of the machine is her sweat and her adrenaline and the particular scented soap that she prefers.
There is a faint whirring as her cameras track my movements from a dozen angles. The access ports open to receive me.
Against my better judgment, I imagine eagerness for this exchange.
This is immediately followed by an all too familiar sense of inadequacy. The engineers’ rig is not nearly as all encompassing as a pilots’. It's only the most basic neural interface. No haptics. No neurotransmitter feedback. No access to the suite of sensors studded throughout her hull.
I can't interface with her the way her pilot can.
My rig is a remnant from basic training. The pilot corps wanted me for my exceptional ratings in synchrony and neuro-elasticity, but after serval training exercises, they determined that I didn't have the temperament for the battlefield. I froze up too easily.
A neural rig is a massive investment and removing one will fuck a person up a hell of a lot more than installing one. The selection process is designed to weed out washouts before we even get to installation, but some of us still slip through the cracks. Most end up reassigned to logistics, operating loader mechs or piloting long haul supply frigates. But my aptitudes made me ideal for the engineering corps, so here I am.
Morrigan senses my mood and the cradle shifts slightly, aligning itself to my dimensions. Her eagerness to connect morphs into a sort of tender reassurance. It's a slippery slope, ascribing human emotions to these machines, but she does seem genuinely happy to see me.
I can never be part of what she and her pilot have, but I can be part of something in my own way.
The pilot knows about me, she would even without neural bleed. Does she envy the relationship I have with her mech? Does she envy that I can exist both together and apart with the machine?
Is she jealous of us?
Morrigan slips her jacks into my rig and my mind enters hers and I feel tension leave my body. Some dull ache that I wasn't even consciously aware of ebbs within me.
My senses dull and my visual cortex is fed a series of diagnostic logs and telemetry streams. The techs have access to the exact same data, but Morrigan highlights particular data points that she and the pilot flagged. I log them in the engineering report.

I hear the ghost of music, strange and ambient, like whale song. The first time I heard it, I asked the techs about it. They had no idea what I was talking about. One even suggested I get an eval for some psych leave.
Later I realized Morrigan was singing to me. Or rather she was interpreting tightbeam comm links as something my brain could process. A human mind can't possibly interpret the full datastream, but with Morrigans's rendition, I can suss out the basic meanings. The battlegroup is a choir and Morrigan is playing me their song.
I caused quite a stir when I first made that connection and started flagging battle events the analysts had missed.
I survey the battlefield before me, reconstructed from feeds from TacCom and all the individual mechs.
Morrigan and I have done this enough times that she knows my preferred display layout, but she holds back, allowing me to pull off the virtual displays on my peripheral vision. There's an odd sort of intimacy to it, her letting me take charge like this.
God-knows how many tons of metal and ceramic and miles and miles of wire and optic fiber and see waits eagerly for me to start the playback sim. She wants to show off. She wants me to assess the actions of her and her pilot and tell them they did well.
Other engineers, few as we are, have mentioned similar experiences with their assigned machines.
“Alright,” I whisper so that only she can hear. “Show me the dance. Sing me the song.”

The worst part of the breakup wasn’t losing Max.
It was losing yourself.
Despite being a world-renowned actress with a thriving career long before you started dating the Dutchman, the last three years of your life had revolved around him.
You weren’t just one of the most admired couples in the paddock, you were also Hollywood’s golden pair. The actress and the Formula 1 world champion, unstoppable together. Rumors of weddings and pregnancies swirled around your seemingly perfect (at least in the public eye) love story.
So when everything ended abruptly, without explanation from either of you to everyone, the world needed a villain.
The headlines spoke for themselves:

The comments from people who once admired you were even worse. If the insults were harsh, the death threats were unbearable. Demands flooded in for you to issue a public apology for a “crime” you hadn’t committed, for nothing more than just a breakup that Max himself had initiated to focus on his career, as he told you and excused himself with. Every interview you gave was twisted, your words manipulated. And instead of staying silent, like your words, the press loudly proclaimed that you were the reason Verstappen's performance had declined last season.
Max knew about it all. After all, he’d been asked about it countless times during press conferences. Reporters bombarded him with headlines starring you both, turning your private lives into international gossip. Yet, all he did was smile politely and dismiss the questions as if they were mere inconveniences.
You had expected at least a call from him to find some way to put an end to it all. But when he never reached out, you decided to call him yourself. All you got was a voicemail telling you to try again later. And when you did, again and again, he ended up blocking your number, showing you how things actually were between you both.
You never got an answer. You never found out why he decided to ignore how the world was painting the woman he had supposedly loved.
That’s when you decided to stop waiting for an answer, a real and proper explanation.
If they wanted a villain, you’d give them one.
You didn’t just delete your social media and vanish from the public eye, you also returned to the industry in full force, accepting a lead role in a film after years of turning projects down just to support Max race after race. He didn’t answer, and you didn’t bother to say anything else. Instead, you turned toward the balcony just a few steps away, where the view stretched across most of the principality. The city lights shimmered before you, captivating you, reminding you that this place had once been your safe haven, your refuge… The setting of dreams that never became reality, of a life you once envisioned but that crumbled before it could ever be built.
You tensed at the sound of footsteps behind you, but you didn’t turn around.
You knew it was Max. And you also knew you should have left. Should have walked away, let him drown in his guilt, let the weight of regret eat away at him.

He inhaled sharply. You knew you had hit where it hurt the most: his pride.
“Is this what you wanted?” His voice was low, but his frustration was unmistakable. “To play the vengeful ex? To prove something? To prove something to yourself?”
You let his words settle, rolling them over in your mind, searching for a reply that would cut just as deep.
“Prove something? To someone? To myself?” You tilted your head back and let out a hollow laugh. “That’s funny, Max, because I don’t think I’ve ever needed to prove anything to anyone, including you. Tell me, have I ever needed to prove anything to you?”
Yes, that you loved him with everything you had. And where had that gotten you?
“You’ve turned this into a game, into some kind of performance,” he said coldly, his blue eyes cutting into you like daggers.
“If you want to say so…” you smirked, voice laced with mockery, "Honestly, I wouldn't mind being the actress starring in your bad dreams but, between you and I… I think I already am."
A bitter laugh escaped your lips. Max, however, wasn’t laughing. His irritation was growing, his anger simmering beneath the surface, and for the first time, you felt a flicker of unease at the way he was looking at you, clouded with something dark, something dangerous.
“A game? Seriously, Max?” You spoke again, stepping closer, fingers playing with the fabric of his tie. “Tell me, who was the one who started this game? Was it me, when I heard you say you wanted to focus on your career instead of a relationship? Was it your fans, when they decided I was the villain in our story? Was it when they painted me as the ruthless bitch who left you the moment I got the fame I wanted? Or was it when you stayed silent, letting them believe it, knowing damn well it was all a lie?”
Max flinched. He knew you were right, but his pride, his damn pride, kept him from admitting it.
“I never—”
“Oh, cut the bullshit,” you cut him off, turning away before spinning back to face him. “You never defended me. You let them say whatever the hell they wanted. You let them tear me apart while you laughed at their comments, dodged their questions… feeding into the rumors you knew weren’t true.”
“It wasn’t that simple—”
“No, Max, it really was that simple,” you shot back, raising your voice. “It was as simple as telling the truth. Or saying something, anything, really. Even a lie would’ve been better than leaving me to burn the way you did. You let them think I used you, that I never loved you, that I walked away without a second thought.”
“You did walk away, don’t act like you didn’t—”
You froze. You had heard that accusation before, over and over. But the way he said it now, the coldness in his tone, it was what finally made you snap.
“What the hell was I supposed to do, Max? Follow you around like some desperate puppy after you told me you wanted to focus on your career?” you shouted, not caring who might hear. “Stay with you while every headline called me a gold-digging whore? Let strangers tell me and truly believe that, if I had a career, it was only because of you?”
Your breath was coming faster now, your chest tightening with an anxiety you hadn’t felt in a long time, and you didn’t miss.
“Do you even know what it’s like, Max? To have your entire existence reduced to being someone’s girlfriend and the main character of a series of meaningless scandals?”
Max said nothing.
“You never had to explain yourself, Max. Never. If you won races, they praised you. If you lost, they still worshiped you. If you got into fights or disappeared for weeks, you were still Red Bull’s golden boy, still the one everyone adored. But me?” You shook your head, laughing bitterly. “I had to justify my own success… the success I had built long before you and I were ever a thing.”
“I never wanted that for you—”
“And yet, you let it happen.” Your voice softened, a hint of something almost like pity creeping in. “You let them destroy me just to keep yourself clean. I don’t know if it was your idea, your dad’s, or your PR team’s, and honestly, I don’t even care anymore. I don’t wish the same on you, Max, I really don’t… but I do wish you’d had to live through it, even just for a second, so you’d understand.”
“I…”
Max dragged a hand through his hair, restless. His eyes darted around, unable to meet yours, his whole body tense with unspoken words. And despite everything, despite all the pain, you knew one thing for certain: at the end of your reputation, you were truly feeling alive.
“I didn’t know what to do,” he finally admitted. “I didn’t know how to fix it. How to make it stop—”
“That’s the thing, Max,” you murmured, tilting your head. “You never had to fix anything. You just had to stand by me.”
The weight of those words settled between you both, heavy and inescapable.
For a long moment, neither of you spoke. You simply stood there, staring at each other, reliving every second, every memory, every moment you once thought would last forever.
Max thought about how much he wanted to go back to those moments. You simply smiled to yourself, knowing you had walked away from the person who had broken every single promise to protect you.

You didn’t say anything else. Wrapping your arms around yourself, seeking comfort, reassurance, trying to convince yourself you were doing the right thing.

Hi! This is. absolutely not what you were after but Shadow Milk Cookie's whole theatre and deception deal makes it far too tempting to attempt a format screw form of writing with him. The air in the HYBE meeting room was thick with tension, the kind that pressed against Seungcheol’s chest and made his pulse pound in his ears. He stood at the head of the long, polished table, fists clenched at his sides, facing a row of executives in crisp suits. Manager Kim lingered by the door, arms crossed, his expression a mix of guilt and quiet support. It had been two days since Kim’s confession in yn’s apartment, two days since Seungcheol learned the truth—that the company had forced her hand, coerced her into breaking his heart to “protect” him and Seventeen. Two days of simmering rage that had finally boiled over.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” Seungcheol’s voice was low, and controlled, but laced with a fury that made the room shrink. The executives shifted uncomfortably, exchanging glances, but he didn’t give them a chance to respond. “You don’t get to meddle in my life like this. You don’t get to decide who I love, who I fight for. That’s not your call—it’s mine.”
One of the suits, a stern-faced man with graying hair, leaned forward, hands clasped. “Seungcheol, we understand you’re upset, but this was for your own good—for the group’s future. If the fans found out—”
“Stop,” Seungcheol snapped, slamming a hand on the table. The sound echoed, sharp and final. “Don’t hide behind ‘the fans.’ You didn’t do this for me or them—you did it for your bottom line. You think I don’t know how this works? I’ve given everything to this group—my sweat, my sleep, my sanity—and you repay me by ripping away the one person who kept me grounded?”
His voice cracked, but he didn’t care. The anger poured out, years of bottled-up frustration spilling over. “Yn didn’t deserve that. She’s not some liability you can erase. She’s the reason I could keep going through the chaos—through the schedules, the pressure, all of it. And you made her think she was ruining me? You made her lie to me, break herself apart, because you were too scared to trust me to handle it?”
Another executive, a younger woman with a tight bun, tried to interject. “We were protecting Seventeen’s image. A scandal like this—”
“Scandal?” Seungcheol laughed, bitter and hollow. “Love isn’t a scandal. It’s not a PR crisis you can spin away. I’m not some puppet you control. I’m a person, and I get to choose who I share my life with. You don’t own that part of me—no contract, no amount of money gives you that right.”
Manager Kim stepped forward, his voice steady but firm. “He’s right. You overstepped. I told you this would backfire—I told you he’d fight for her. You didn’t just hurt him; you hurt yn too. She didn’t sign up for this.”
The gray-haired man sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Seungcheol, we’re not saying you can’t date. We just needed discretion—”
“Discretion doesn’t mean forcing her to leave me!” Seungcheol’s shout rang out, raw and unfiltered. “You didn’t ask for discretion—you demanded sacrifice. Hers, mine, ours. And I’m done letting you call the shots. If it comes down to it, I’ll walk away before I let you take her from me again.”
The room fell silent, the weight of his words settling like lead. The executives exchanged uneasy looks, clearly unprepared for the fire in their leader’s eyes. Seungcheol straightened, chest heaving, but his resolve was ironclad. “You don’t touch her. You don’t go near her. If there’s fallout, I’ll handle it. Me and the guys—we’ll face it together. But this ends now.”
He turned on his heel and stormed out, Manager Kim following close behind. The door slammed shut, a punctuation mark on his defiance. He wasn’t just fighting for yn—he was fighting for himself, for the life he wanted, not the one they’d scripted for him.

Later that evening, Seungcheol gathered the members in the dorm’s living room. The air was lighter here, filled with the familiar chaos of thirteen voices, but tonight it was subdued, everyone waiting for him to speak. Yn sat on the couch, knees pulled to her chest, eyes still red from days of crying. She’d come at Seungcheol’s insistence, though she’d hesitated, guilt still clinging to her like a second skin.
He stood in front of them, hands on his hips, and took a deep breath. “You all know what happened. Yn and I… the company forced her to break it off. They thought she’d ruin us.”
Murmurs rippled through the group—shock, anger, confusion. Mingyu’s jaw tightened, Hoshi leaned forward, and Jeonghan’s sharp gaze flicked to yn. Seungcheol held up a hand to quiet them. “I told them today—they don’t get to control me. Us. I’m not letting her go again, no matter what they throw at us. But I need you to hear it from me: this could get messy. Fans, media… it might hit us hard. I won’t drag you into something you don’t want.”
Joshua spoke first, voice calm but firm. “Hyung, you think we’d let you face this alone? yn’s not ruining anything—she’s family now. We’ve got your back.”
“Yeah,” Vernon chimed in, flashing a grin despite the tension. “If Carats can handle dk Hyungs’s weird tiktoks, they can handle this.”
Dokyeom snorted, but his expression softened as he looked at yn. “You don’t have to worry about us. We’re tougher than we look.”
Hoshi nodded, crossing his arms. “Love’s worth fighting for. I’d do the same for someone I cared about. We’re not going anywhere.”
One by one, they chimed in—Seungkwan with a dramatic “We’re a team, aren’t we?”, Woozi with a quiet “You’re happy with her, that’s enough,” Dino with an earnest “We’ll protect you both.” Even Wonwoo, usually silent, murmured, “You don’t need to carry this by yourself.”
Yn’s eyes welled up, her hands trembling as she tried to speak. “I—I didn’t want to hurt you guys. I thought I was doing the right thing, keeping you safe…”
Jeonghan slid closer, resting a hand on her shoulder. “You didn’t hurt us. You tried to protect us—same as Cheol always does. But you don’t have to do it alone anymore.”
Mingyu grinned, leaning over the couch. “Besides, we like you. You’re stuck with us now.”
Laughter broke the tension, soft and healing, and yn managed a small, watery smile. Seungcheol watched her, his chest loosening for the first time in weeks. His family—his brothers—had her back, and that was more than he’d dared to hope for.

Her lip trembled, but she nodded. “I promise.”
He studied her, his gaze softening but firm. “I mean it, yn. If you pull away like that again, I’m not letting it slide. I’ll go public—put it all out there, tell the world you’re mine. I don’t care what they say. As long as you’re with me, I can take anything.”

She let out a shaky laugh, leaning into his touch. “I don’t deserve you.”
“Nah,” he grinned, the first real smile he’d felt in weeks. “You deserve better, but you’re stuck with me anyway.”
They sank onto the bed, side by side, her head resting on his shoulder. He laced their fingers together, his thumb tracing circles on her skin. “Tell me something,” he said after a quiet moment. “What’s one thing you missed most?”
Y/N smirked, a playful glint in her eyes despite the lingering tears. “Jeonghan.”
Seungcheol’s brow shot up, and he pulled back to stare at her, mock offense written all over his face. “Jeonghan? Seriously? My own member? I should hide Jeonghannie from you—lock him in a closet or something. You’re not allowed to see him anymore.”
She laughed—a real, bright sound that warmed him from the inside out. “Oh, come on! You know he was my bias back when I was just a fan in the crowd, screaming for you guys. I even had a whole collection of his photocards—spent way too much money on those.”
He narrowed his eyes, leaning closer. “Had? Where’d they go?”
Yn paused, tilting her head as if realizing something. “You know, they mysteriously disappeared right after we started dating. I always wondered…”
Seungcheol grinned, a little sheepish, and rubbed the back of his neck. “Okay, fine. I hid them. Stashed them in a box under my bed. Couldn’t stand the idea of you swooning over Jeonghan when you had me right there.”
Her jaw dropped, then she laughed again, swatting his arm. “You’re ridiculous! You were jealous of your own groupmate?”
“Damn right I was,” he said, unapologetic. “But don’t worry—I’ve got a stack of my own photocards now. I’ll give you all of them, every version, signed and everything. You’re a Cheol stan from now on, got it?”
“Deal,” she said, grinning as she nestled back against him. “Though I’ll miss teasing you about it.”
He chuckled, wrapping an arm around her. “Tease all you want—just don’t leave me for him.”
“Never,” she whispered, her voice soft but sure.
They lay there, tangled in each other, the weight of the past month lifting with every shared breath. Originally collected from multiple sources part of, and in contact with, Minou in the months leading up to May, these are the published leaks and conversations from that time. According to other leakers, this information was ~80% true and likely to have come from real extras, including military staff. Today, we have full confirmation for the vast majority. Screenshots from the time are publicly available, and as such will not be provided in this post.

PARTIAL NURSING EXTRA INTERVIEW
"Hey! I'm really sorry for not having talked much. There is a lot of work here. I have coffee on hand and [more information]! Personally, the filming is scattered. The military personnel, but especially [us] nurses, are recurring but do not play an incredible role, at least for our cohort. There are 2 [...] good guys and bad guys. My group is the [good cohort], we are generally in the background and we [...] take care of civilians and [the main] actors.
Extras for the military are sent in [shifts], so if the accounts of fans have not posted a huge ad saying 'EXTRAS FINALLY ARRIVED IN ATLANTA', that is why. It's something that they have done in all of the filming sessions. It is way too much work to have everyone here at the same time, and [we also experience] problems with travel and confidentiality.
[...] Most of us are leaving the area when we finish the work for the day. Some come in [only to] return home. I am staying in a motel with a handful of other extras.
The leaks on the time skip are true, but I think they have been exaggerated. It is [limited to the first episode] and taken slowly, given that we are moving from one season to another. It stops in autumn. The aesthetic of the season is similar to the first season [and] there are no flashy colours, if that can make someone happy. In fact, I think [it is] duller than season 1. It is very suitable for what [will be occurring]."
FULL LEAK RUNDOWN INTERVIEW
Was there any mention of the Upside Down duos or confirmed mid-late season pairings?
"The season is a lot more community-orientated. The 'pairings' they mentioned were small groups."
Did they confirm Mike's injury?
" [...] Almost all of the characters get hurt in some way [...] They have scratches, injured arms and legs with visual limps and gashes. One character has a deep wound near their midsection. There is a conversation about health and sickness [caused by the] Upside Down particles and environment, and how that might put people at [higher] risk."
Did they have solid information outside of the hospital, specifically regarding character arcs?
"They confirmed the time skip leaks, but it was blown out of proportion, as well as the Upside Down sicknesses. The parents, mainly Karen, have an increase in screen time because of [the sicknesses], and eventually become involved with the supernatural plot. There is a 'Byler' moment where the two [...] scout out [an area] together."
What additional information do you have?
"A large amount of the season focuses on the real world and Hawkins. The aesthetic and pacing is similar to season 1 and 2, [and it is] set around fall. [Hawkins] has aspects of quarantining. The hospital crew were sent to Hawkins by the military, [however they] abandoned those duties to help properly assist civilians. They are snuffed out eventually."
What are they unable to tell you?
"Extras almost never have the full script, and might not even have their own, unless [they have] speaking lines [...] I would not be shocked if parts were cut out."
How would you better describe Mike's arc?
"[...] His arc is separate, in the sense that he is not talking about his girlfriend every 5 seconds [like in season 3 and 4]. It's focused on self discovery [...] he is trying to get back to normalcy and figure out what [had] changed in him. He spends [most of the season] with Will, and there is more distance between him and El. [...] The vibes are similar to [those in] season 4."
Did you hear anything about Will?
"No. All I really know is that Will takes a leadership role because of his knowledge [and experience with] the Upside Down. They reacted positively to the rumours about Will having nightmares or discomfort. [I was only told about] 2 conversations [between] Mike and Will, and both of them are about health and well being. [It's possible that they are] in the same scene, with a transition between public and somewhere more secluded. The first is about the health of other people, and the second is about Mike and Will individually."
Have you heard anything in relation to the farm?
"They are not involved in those scenes and plots, but the characters consider heading farther from Hawkins because of everything that is going on with the military and gate exposure [...] It is not related to any Upside Down threat initially."
Does Will blame himself?
"Will takes on a [...] leadership role because of his experience with the Upside Down and general maturity. A chunk of his plot is him feeling [as if] he has a responsibility to support everybody else, and [he has] some negative emotions brought out when that does not go perfect. Not that the rest of the characters are happy, but nothing is explicitly said or shown except for Will and some other characters. There are a handful of remarks made about his responses to events."
How do these negative emotions contribute to the stories angst?
"The entire season is doom and gloom, but for Will, everything is discreet. [...] His relationships are strained. He lets his trauma take the wheel from what I'm hearing, [feeling] on edge early in the season, and [this] turns into snappy dialogue post-harm. There are comments from other characters that bring up and question this, specifically El, Steve and Robin. [There are] no destroyed friendships because of it [...] but it is uncomfortable."
INCOMPLETE SPACE RECORDINGS
There are multiple flashbacks throughout the season.
There is an angst parallel to season 2.
When asked about the church, a burning cross was presented.
El does not live in Hopper's cabin or Mike's house.
Will experience nightmares and trances.
Vecna targets his victims in a different way.
Vecna targets Holly.
Karen does not die.
Ted dies.
El does not attend school or live close to Hawkins.
Nobody knows the ending.
Will falls from a tree and the visual switches from the Upside Down to the real world.

A/N: GUYYYYYS, I am GAGGED. I loved writing this so much, I'll be releasing all parts this week! I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have! I am a sucker for this man.
Hawks was always a smooth talker, he knew how to ruffle feathers and get reactions from people with his outlandish comments. He thought you would be no different, oh was he wrong. You were about to turn the tables on him.

Keigo Takami—better known as Hawks, Japan’s Number Two Pro Hero—wasn’t used to losing.
He was fast, he was smart, and he was devastatingly charming.
At least, that’s what he thought—until he met you.
You, who had the audacity to turn his own game against him.
You, who lived to see him squirm.
You, who had him completely, utterly, hopelessly flustered.
And what was worse?
You knew it.
It had all started as a simple game.
Hawks was a natural flirt—it was effortless, second nature. And when you first started working together, he had assumed you’d be just like everyone else—blushing at his winks, stammering at his smooth lines, melting under his unmatched charisma.
Easy.
Or so he thought.
What he hadn’t expected was for you to flirt back.
And not just flirt back—but do it so much better than him.
It had started with small things—little counters to his usual routine.
Like the first time he had leaned against your desk with a cocky grin, wings flaring just slightly, and purred, “So, what’s a gorgeous hero like you doing in a stuffy old office like this?”
You hadn’t even blinked.
Instead, you had tilted your head, dragged your gaze slowly down his frame, and smirked.
“I dunno, Hawks,” you mused, voice smooth and dangerous. “What’s a pretty boy like you doing getting all up in my space?”
He had choked.
Actually choked.
And the worst part?
You had just laughed, patted his shoulder, and walked away like it was nothing.
And just like that, the game was on.
The next few weeks had been absolute hell.
Keigo had spent his entire life being smooth, being in control—but you had thrown him so off balance that he could barely function.
You turned every single one of his flirty comments into something ten times worse—flipping the script, making him the blushing mess instead of you.
Like the time he had purred in your ear during a mission briefing, “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll keep an eye on you out there.”
And without missing a beat, you had turned to him, smirked, and purred right back, “I’d rather you keep your hands on me, handsome.”
He had malfunctioned completely, wings flaring wildly behind him as his brain short-circuited.
You had winked.
And then, as if that wasn’t enough, you had walked away, swaying your hips just to taunt him.
Keigo had actually had to take a lap around the building to cool off.
It was infuriating.
It was exhilarating.
It was driving him insane.
The worst part?
He knew exactly where this was headed.
Because this wasn’t just flirting anymore.
It was so much more than that.
It was the way you smiled at him when you thought he wasn’t looking.
It was the way he watched you work, completely captivated by your focus.
It was the way his heart skipped a beat every single time you touched his arm, his shoulder—anywhere.
It was the way he ached for more.
And you knew.
Oh, you knew.
Because every time his breath hitched, every time his cheeks flushed, every time his wings twitched with pent-up frustration, you would just smirk—as if to say:
I got you again, bird boy.
And goddammit, you did.
Every.
Single.
Time.
One night, after a long day of flustering him to the brink of insanity, you were sitting on the agency rooftop together, enjoying the cool breeze.
Keigo let out a long, suffering sigh, rubbing his face. “You’re gonna be the death of me, y’know that?”
You grinned, That usual grin that made his heart soar,leaning back on your hands. “That a promise?”
He groaned, tilting his head back. “Oh my god.”
You laughed, and god help him, he loved that sound.
After a beat, you nudged his knee with yours. “We both know where this is going, Hawks.”
Keigo inhaled sharply, wings tensing.
Because yeah.
Yeah, he knew.
He knew that you were meant to be his. That was inevitable.
But this—this flirty, teasing, ridiculous phase—was so much fun.
So instead of agreeing, instead of finally giving in, he just smirked, rolling his shoulders.
“Eh,” he said breezily. “Maybe I just like keeping you on your toes.”
You laughed again, and this time, you leaned in, your face dangerously close to his, your lips just shy of touching his own. Finger placed under his chin.
He stopped breathing.
“Oh, Hawks,” you murmured, voice low and syrupy sweet. “We both know I’ve got you wrapped around my little finger.”
His entire body erupted in flames.
And then, with a wink, you pulled back, stretched, and stood up.
“See ya tomorrow, bird boy,” you called over your shoulder.
And Keigo Takami, Number Two Pro Hero, untouchable flirt, smooth talker extraordinaire, sat there speechless, his wings flared behind him, his body on fire with frustration, his entire soul screaming for you.
He groaned, falling back against the rooftop with a dramatic sigh.He was so, so screwed.

I've added support for setting any Config or Option setting, plus live editing of many many others, so it's now release time. Full feature explanation below, but essentially this lets you edit lots of settings ingame directly instead of having to make .package mods, and provides a "better" and more shareable way of editing GraphicsRules.sgr settings (IMO). Sorry if a new post is annoying idk what I'm doing
THIS IS A BETA, I haven't tested a lot of the settings, there are bugs, etc.

Installation and use
Please note, some settings wont appear until you load into a world.
Download the ASI file and wack it in to your Sims 3 base directory, where the ts3w.exe is located. If you're using one of the presets, make a folder called s3ss_presets and pop them in there (you'll need to activate them in the presets menu ingame).
Make sure you have an ASI loader, these are either from Smooth Patch's ASI portion or dxwrapper. I recommend dxwrapper, just make sure you set the LoadPlugins value to 1 (should be default)
Start the game, you might experience a little more of an initial "freeze" when starting the game than usual, this is from the script logging a bunch of config calls during initialization, there's like 800 or something nuts. It should not have any negative impact on regular loading or gameplay, and I plan to turn the logging off… eventually.
Press Insert to open up the menu. Go crazy and change everything, make the sun huge, crank bloom up, live.
Check the box next to a live setting to have it save for next time you launch, same thing for config but you also have to press save down the bottom because I forgot
Help I crashed/the game doesn't start with the mod!
Please send me your hooks_log.txt if you're experiencing any crashing issues. If the crash is because you set some value to like 7 billion, that's on you, you can just delete the line out of script_settings.ini or go to Settings -> Clear all settings
If you can't get the game to run with the mod, lmk also, please tell me if you're using a launcher, if you're using any other .asi mods, using dxvk, etc. as well as what operating system you're on.
Features
Live Edit
This is the new™ and now main part of the mod. I've mapped out several/most of the exes main "settings" (anything that interacts w/ 0x005a00a0 and some that don't) areas, which allows you to now, in game, change these values whereas before it was a whole arduous process of making .package mods. I mapped these all statically so some of the offsets/addresses might be wrong.
I was gunna list the settings but there's 260~ of them so maybe not?
I plan to add missing specific individual settings from Config eventually. If you think a setting is missing, or if you think I've mapped a value wrong (i.e. you know it has an effect but it's not working with my mod or is crashing you, or one value is changing multiple things), please let me know. Render/er is definitely missing some, that's because the function is scary and I don't like it.
Values (sometimes) have sliders with the min and max value I found in the exe set, if you want to go higher, you can double click to type in your own number.
Some interesting things you can do with the settings:
Set max lots higher than 8 AND increase the radius so it actually shows (will crash if set too high ~35+, need to investigate) by changing values in Streaming
Play in a game where the sun never sets or rises by editing Sky Common -> Sunset/Sunrise Time
Change shadow settings (includes the same thing as LD's shadow extender mod under), extending shadows (they will still look hideous, writing a post about why currently)
Change various light settings to get the perfect look for your game. Some popular mods edit these values for their looks (presets soon?)

Do whatever… this is…?
Game Config
The function we're hooking (0x0058c380) only seems to effect Config (GraphicsRules.sgr in the .exe directory) and Options (Options.ini in the documents/Sims3 directory), but logs a whole bunch of other thing. Feel free to toggle the option in the settings tab and try changing a bunch, it should in theory work because the function is reading and writing but somewhere it gets overridden or something idk 🤷
It lets you set any that fall under those two categories/headings, which means there's some like ForceHighLODObjects that aren't in the actual file and are settable. You might notice some show different values than what they're set as in your config, this could either be that I'm hooking it too early (I don't think I am), or the value is getting overwritten or changed somewhere in the exe. If there's a setting that's in the file but not in the list that you think does something, lmk, but it should capture everything.
I haven't mapped all of the Config/Option settings to Live Edit as they're all split up in the exe, if there's one you want in particular, lmk.
Presets
I've prepared a preset with just the essentials from my GraphicsRules file post with the idea that you can then use this with a stock GraphicsRules file instead of having to manage different versions, giving you the ability to toggle certain things back to default. I might make some visual "enhancement" presets or something later, either based off popular mods or my own insanity, we'll see.
Presets go into the s3ss_presets folder, and currently they stack rather than replace (not intentional but I might keep it)
Known issues:
Rendering toggles need to be re-toggled each load - Easy fix I'm just lazy
Options settings overwrite the actual Options.ini file (idk why??)
Occasionally D3D9 wont hook, I can't replicate this reliably to test so lmk if you can lmao
I mapped all the settings pretty hastily, so some are bound to be wrong
Was flagged as a virus briefly??? Praying this never happens again because I have no idea what to do to fix that dshjakfhhsdaj
Presets stack, if you apply a preset and you have existing values, they stack together… I kind of like that though as a concept so I just added a clear all option to settings, I might rework it later.
Some Live Edit value locations might change during gameplay, resulting in the menu displaying them incorrectly and crashing the game if edited in a broken state. I've checked most off them and they don't seem to, but Render ones did. Let me know if you experience it as I can probably find a static pointer like I did for Render.
Planned things:
Searching. God that'd be good…
Go over existing maps again, some I did early on before I supported static values, 4 float arrays, etc. so I've probably messed some up
Adding every single GraphicsRule.sgr setting to Live
Maybe adding some of my performance mods to it? Or should I keep them as their own individual thing? Mmmm I dunno
I still haven't looked at the way everyone else has been editing the "live" settings, so I should probably do that, there's probably a lot of info out there but at this point I'm too invested in my weird approach djsakfsksaffsa
Updates:
18.10.24 - Hopefully fixed an issue effect people using launchers, as well as a fix for the process hanging after quitting (would look closed but the process is still there in the bg). Also fixed presets applying. 17.10.24 - Hopefully fix a D3D issue that might've resulted in the game freezing/looking frozen. Handles D3D device resets. Will expand in the future to cover other areas maybe.

a/n: I've been watching a ton of The Office bloopers, which inspired this random little thing. This is set waaay back in part 1. Oh, the good ol' days.

Ewan and the reader film a promo spot for season 2. They try to, at least.
The press day in Paris had been going smoothly for the most part. At least, that was how it seemed. You hoped that you have been able to act smooth, so to speak, having to sit in close quarters with a guy who can make your heart race a mile a minute, and all he has to do is turn those blue eyes in your direction.
You and Ewan were halfway through your schedule of interviews and promo. But by the time the crew set up for the next clip—a quick promotional spot—you both were running on caffeine and shared inside jokes.
You couldn’t believe you were sharing private quips with Ewan (Aemond himself!) but you found it easy to get lost in your dynamic. These were the kind of jokes that only made sense after hours and hours of interviews, with lights glaring in your faces and scripted answers rolling off your tongues like a broken record.
You stood next to him, the House of the Dragon logo projected on a screen behind you. The task was simple: introduce yourself and tell the audience to watch House of the Dragon Season 2 on Max. Fifteen seconds, tops.
But you two had already spiraled into a fit of laughter in the last three takes.
Somehow, saying the line together, “Go and watch House of the Dragon Season 2, only on Max,” had become the hardest thing in the world.
“Alright, let’s try this again,” the director said, sounding more tired than frustrated. “From the top.”
Ewan turned to you, his lips twitching. “Bet you crack first, darling.”
Your mouth fell open in faux indignation. “Shush. I got this.”
“Let’s see, shall we?” His gaze dropped briefly to your lips before he straightened up, ready to go.
The red light on the camera flicked on, and the cameraman waved a hand as a signal for you to begin.
You barely had time to shoot Ewan a warning glance before you introduced yourself.
He followed smoothly, “And I’m Ewan Mitchell.”
It was going fine. Smooth, even. So professional.
Until you reached the part where you had to say the final line in unison.
“Go and watch House of the Dragon Season 2, only on—” Ewan dropped his voice an octave, dragging out “Max” in an over-the-top baritone that sent you over the edge.
“Pffft—shit!” you snort uncontrollably. “What was that?” You pressed a hand to your mouth, trying desperately to keep it together, but it was too late.
Take, ruined.
“What?” Ewan crumbles into laughter, his low chuckle infectious.
The director sighed heavily. “Cut!”
“Oh my god,” you groaned, wiping at the tears forming in the corners of your eyes. “We’re never going to get through this.”
Ewan leaned in, ducking his head to whisper, “You’re adorable when you laugh.”
“Stop it,” you shot him a look. Act cool. “You’re distracting me on purpose.”
“Stop what?” he smirked. “I’m just trying to help.”
“Right. Some help you are,” you said sarcastically, though the warmth in his gaze made it impossible to stay serious for long.
“Come on, focus,” he teased, nudging your arm with his elbow. “We’ve got a job to do here.”
“Maybe you should focus,” you retorted, arching an eyebrow. “You’re the one who keeps messing up with that ridiculous voice.”
He laughed again. “What can I say? I thought we needed some extra charm.”
You gasp playfully. “Is that your subtle way of telling me I don’t possess enough charm?”
“Oh, darling,” he said, “I could never say that to you.”
You clear your throat. “Mhmm… okay, well—”
His smirk stayed right in place, as he leaned back coolly.
“Alright, guys, one more time,” the director called out. “Please, just this one. Action.”
You stood a little straighter, determined to get it right this time, then recited your line.
“... and I’m Ewan Mitchell.”
Together, you spoke in unison. “Go and watch House of the Dragon Season 2, only on—”
But this time, Ewan leaned in just a fraction, whispering right at the end of the line, “Max... or maybe just come watch it with me?”
His breath was warm against your ear, sending a shiver down your spine. You lost it completely.
“Oh my god, stop,” you gasped between fits of laughter, swatting at his arm. “Ewan, you can’t say that!”
The director groaned from behind the camera, clearly on the verge of giving up. “Alright, five minutes, people. Just take a breather.”
You were still laughing as you walked off the set, shaking your head in disbelief. “We’re never going to get this done.”
Ewan followed you, his grin softening into something more intimate as he glanced your way. “Maybe we could be stuck here all day together. Would that really be so bad?”
Your breath hitched slightly. He wasn’t looking at you like he was joking anymore. You opened your mouth to respond, but the words got tangled up somewhere between your brain and your throat.
Thankfully, the crew called you both back for another take before things could get any more complicated.
Once again, you took your places under the lights. You made the mistake of catching Ewan’s eye, and the memory of his earlier teasing flooded back, making it impossible to keep a straight face.
Ewan raised his eyebrows at you, as if daring you to start laughing again.
“Don’t you dare,” you whispered through gritted teeth, fighting the urge to laugh.
“I didn’t say anything,” he said, his lips twitching.
“You’re thinking it.”
He chuckled under his breath, his voice low. “I was thinking of something else entirely.”
Your cheeks burned. Before you could even process what he meant, the camera started rolling again.
You took a deep breath and said your line without a hitch.
Ewan jumped in, his voice perfectly smooth and serious this time. “And I’m Ewan Mitchell.”
Together, you said, “Go and watch House of the Dragon Season 2, only on Max.”
You made it. You actually made it through the line.
The director hurriedly shouted a relieved, "Aaaand, CUT!" then added, "Holy shit, you two—with all that flirting, I'm amazed we made it this far today."

you know what i find fascinating?
in essentially every interview since season 4, whenever asked about wills feelings/byler, finn has a nearly identical response that’s quite telling. he always says the following: “mike’s clueless” or something along those lines.
this even extends to press he did for other movies like wyfstw (i believe it’s in the finn wolfhard goes undercover on the internet video).
it’s fascinating because its a clearly scripted response — if you’re at all familiar with the stranger things press from each season, you’ll know that the cast has a SHIT TON of media training. they are very well instructed, even specifically coached on what they can say and the language they can use.
consider for instance the difference in the way noah spoke about byler and will’s sexuality in the gap between volumes 1 and 2. pre vol-2, he got a lot of shit for saying that will’s sexuality was “up for interpretation” — people took it as the duffers erasing queerness from their storyline when in fact he was INSTRUCTED to say that to avoid spoilers. the moment vol2 dropped, all of that went away and he actually did a full (variety?) interview where he confirmed will was gay and in love with mike.
what i’m really trying to say here is the language of calling mike clueless is a deliberately strategized response to avoid both spoilers and the potential for more questions surrounding the more intricate parts of mike’s storyline, which have very obviously been saved for season 5 — they seem to be building up to revealing his perspective. with that said, my personal belief is that he’s not as clueless as these scripted responses make him out to be — this is a tactic to avoid spoilers.
