hey. hey wanna hear about when i spent a day and a half writing 1.2k words analyzing vashs 1st-person pronouns from chapter #00-06 saying that he uses ore by default (by himself and around people he truly opens up to) and boku around everyone else

and then i decided to skim the rest of trigun (#07-#20) to check when he switches back to boku. and then he doesnt. he uses ore in front of the girls and wolfwood. and thats weird because i know for a fact that boku is the pronoun he uses like 99% of the time especially bc fanworks tend to have him use exclusively boku

and then i panicked and opened a random trimax volume. and voila. i flip to a page where he says boku in front of wolfwood

and i realized that the reason he used ore so frequently in trigun is because his character traits likely werent set in stone or were just tweaked in trimax

and then i shriveled up and died. yall wanna hear about that (wednesday june 14 2023 at 10:08pm edt)

my review of gideon the ninth: coolest take on necromancy i've read. the way gideon was handled made me completely miserable and I didn't finish the book

spoilers ahead

I figured out that the book was going to end in Gideon's death about halfway through the book, either just before or during the soul siphoning trial. I was partly tipped off by the fact that every cover of the book referenced the sequel, "harrow the ninth", but also by the fact that the narrative was really, REALLY doubling down at this point on the fact that gideon nav was no more than a bag of meat. never has been and never will be.

that was the point where I really should have either looked up the ending or flipped through to the end of the book and spoiled myself because had I known that I was right, I would have just stopped reading rather than have to endure my heart being broken by the complete lack of respect given to that girl by basically anyone, especially herself. the fact that she herself said that she was a battery was repulsive to me, not because she said that--of course she would, she has no love for herself--but because no one fought back against her. I waited through the whole book for harrow to tell her to stop it, because harrow was the only one who COULD tell her to, but the single time she did, Gideon threw her body onto a pile of spikes. and I closed the book.

I was willing to put up with the master/slave dynamic set up from the start in the hopes that it would be subverted in some way and the two would get on more equal footing. enemies to lovers is great fun for me, lifelong power imbalances like that are... not. I thought gideon might be stubborn and hateful enough to fight back against harrow and their new relationship would be formed based on that. I hoped that the questionable implications the necromancy trials were bringing up, and that were ADDRESSED as being questionable by the characters themselves, were going to be something to set up the fact that what I expected to happen was something terrible, something no one should do.

instead I saw what felt like the author saying "well, if she fought back, the plot wouldn't progress". and then I saw gideon fight back less and less against things more and more dehumanizing. she became less and less a character, until she finally stopped being one at all. gideon did not reclaim her life an ounce. from beginning to end, she was a slave who had nothing, prisoner to and possession of harrow.

the hardest part is the fact that i'm still curious about what goes on afterwards. the world was interesting, the characters were fun. but reading that book made me feel awful. if the next books were centered around finding a way to bring gideon back, that might lessen the sting a little, but the way she was treated with such brazen disrespect in the first place... well. doesn't give me a lot of faith.
