The ambivalence of life: the massage metaphor
Tumblr media
I'm going to get straight to the point: Denji is perfectly right to want to suffer - it's precisely what he lacked in his 'normal' life.
To understand this, let's go back to the chapter.
Tumblr media
Introducing Denji as a CSM wannabe right at the start of the chapter isn't as insignificant as you might think, because this chapter helps to differentiate between CSM and a CSM wannabe.
After all, Denji could very well be one, and chapter 150 makes it clear that the protagonist's dream is to be a CSM, so he literally wants... to be a CSM.
Tumblr media
But in order to become CSM himself, we have to understand what CSM is. And that's precisely where the difference lies between a CSM wannabe and Denji as CSM.
Part 2 has repeatedly shown that 'CSM' has become a marketing product, an idol for young people, a source of detestation for others, like express usurpers who have taken to the stage. In short, CSM's identity began to become more diffuse, questioned to the point where it seemed to escape Denji. So what is CSM?
Tumblr media
Well, let me ask you this: what's the first thing you think of when I mention CSM?
Most fans will cite the most traumatic and tragic chapters, shuddering at the mere mention of volume 9. There's your answer: suffering is the secret of CSM's identity.
But let's move away from this more meta side, and get back to the chapter.
Tumblr media
I know that Nayuta being pushed aside and put in her place stung some people's hearts and it hurt me too! But Denji is right to push her away, cruel as that may seem. Because the complexity of Denji and Nayuta's relationship also lies in the fact that their relationship can have several negative sides.
Firstly, Nayuta is and remains the demon of control, a demon who can't help but have a hold, even over those she loves. And she has done this with Denji on one occasion: when she forbids him to see Asa again.
Tumblr media
She forbids it out of a desire to protect him, fearing that Denji will be taken in by yet another girl. This reaction depresses Denji, but he regains hope by acting as CSM, motivated by Nayuta herself because CSM is admired and loved by people. The first instinct at this stage would be to think that this is a bit contradictory: why push Nayuta away when she's the first to admire and encourage CSM?
Because she hasn't grasped what CSM is all about either. I'll expand on that later, but for now, keep in mind that suffering is intrinsic to CSM. Even when she prevented Denji from continuing his story with Asa, she was preventing Denji from suffering, in itself, from experimenting. The same experience can be just as beneficial as it can be negative, and it's part of the game of life not to know the outcome of a relationship, otherwise you wouldn't go with others.
Tumblr media
And that's what Nayuta has done, the demon of control has a happiness that's enough to be two, it's a demon that risks being alone so much that a single loved one is enough to make her happy. But that's Nayuta's idea, not Denji's.
I'll come back to this a bit more, but for the moment I'm still going to follow the chapter. Denji almost comes to thank Barem and the others for burning down his house and his pets, but he's also aware that morality is being undermined and even talks to Pochita about it. And that's fascinating.
Tumblr media
Even though it may seem horrible, the loss of his animal family allows Denji to realise that he needs this suffering in his life, for many reasons. If Kishibe judged Denji as a man made to kill demons, it's because suffering makes him gloat, because it's the most intense experience he's had in his life.
Transforming himself into a CSM is a way for Denji to confront suffering; he has even internalised it since he was a child, making his body suffer to pay off his debts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CSM is a creature made for suffering. When Aki became possessed by the Gun Devil, CSM was the culmination of Denji's suffering, his demonic form killing his brother. Just as Denji transformed into Pochita was saved by a dying Power.
The foundations of Denji, Aki and Power only consolidated Denji's relationship with suffering. This double facet, between love and suffering through grief. Pochita is another example, because becoming CSM was followed by an experience of mourning, the loss of Pochita who had merged with him.
Tumblr media
Suffering is as intrinsic to all species as are death and love because suffering is the result of both, the love we have for others is the cause of our suffering when they die.
CSM is this universality, with Pochita sacrificing himself to prevent Denji from dying, suffering every time the cable is pulled. And instead of fighting it, CSM uses it as the engine of his chainsaws. When Nayuta says that this is not the time for chainsaws, she wants to prevent her brother from suffering. But Denji understands that it's precisely when he's suffering that it's time to be CSM.
Tumblr media
Having your head and arms brutally chopped off hurts, fighting demons hurts, in short, transforming into a CSM physically hurts and must hurt. Imagine having a cable cut in half across your torso: it hurts, so why pull it? That's why Denji IS CSM, because it's when it hurts that he realises he wants to be CSM?
Tumblr media
Hybrids don't exploit this pain, demons like the Eternity Demon are even afraid of it, and that's what explains CSM's superiority: suffering exalts him and he uses it as a means to fight. When Quanxi cut off the weapons' heads, it was enough for them to admit defeat, while Denji calmly puts his head back on, not giving up the fight.
Tumblr media
Weapons can't die, but they can see others die, just as suffering can't escape them either. Either they see themselves almost as demigods, as prophets, or they can see themselves as great knights out to save the world.
Tumblr media
Denji knows how to exploit his nature; he drinks blood at the slightest opportunity, tries to devour like a demon and is not afraid to use it, unlike the other hybrids. (Quanxi is an exception)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the spear weapon starts to provoke CSM by saying to really scare them, CSM exploits being sliced in half. Suffering is the fear of weapons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole thing also has a symbolic force, because we've been trying endlessly to cut Denji in two, his human life on the one hand and his life as CSM on the other. Cutting CSM in two won't do him any good, all he has to do is pull his cable.
But above all, the comparison with massage is a very good one, because it sums up life, this combination of good sensations and not-so-good ones. This is precisely what pitted Denji against Makima, that bad films or bad facets of the world and humanity must exist.
This time, part 2 doesn't boil down to this ideology; what Denji is saying is that to live is also to suffer, to be happy is also to have been unhappy. All these things are not mutually exclusive, they go together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's why Denji wins against the weapons, because he won't fight against the suffering they'll put him through, he'll use it to the full, knowing that behind it all there'll be a good feeling. And that seeing the positive side even in pain is nothing other than hope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Denji himself says that life is a superposition of all these facets. There are things we may never get over, but they don't stop us from moving forward. That's why this chapter is incredible, because Denji doesn't accept suffering as a demon when he's fighting, he wants to accept it in his life too, Denji's life, he has to experiment without Nayuta's permanent approval.
Tumblr media
Denji has lost many people close to him, including his pets. It is precisely through their loss that he wants to suffer. Because suffering is the privilege of the living.
Tumblr media
Chainsaw Man is nothing more than 2 entities reunited to survive together.
CSM's laughter is symbolic of this, and chapter 151 made an explicit reference to chapter 82 when Makima starts laughing despite the paroxysm of suffering for Denji, who has just seen Power die. What Fujimoto does is bring together the previous antagonist and the protagonist, to bring out the essence of his work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Makima and Denji laugh despite the horror of the situation as the mask finally comes off, Makima presents her plans and Denji realises what Chainsaw Man is. In short, laughter is the symbol of letting go, as the mask finally comes off. And all this sums up Chainsaw Man, this confrontation between comedy and tragedy, this strange association.
Tumblr media
Readers, don't fight the suffering of the characters either, you're reading CSM precisely because of it. You want to suffer just like CSM. So have fun with it.

B,C,K and T please!
B: A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
i'd never considered ekumob before the broccoli arc was animated. their Powerful friendship is obviously v important to me but i didn't ship them. the Korean fans i was following at the time were fuckin on something tho when that happened and my eyes were opened
the Dungeon Meshi fandom is currently making a strong argument for Laios/Chilchuck. that old man's looking at Laios like "nobody can fix him, but i can fuck him and maybe that'll calm him down at least" and Laios is "me and the dilf i pulled by being aromantic and therefor not triggering his numerous relationship hang-ups ❤❤" i'm increasingly talking myself into them being fuckbuddies
C: A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
Laios/Kabru 😔 like i've said i get the appeal but they're not doing it for me for some reason. maybe as the anime advances
Risotto/Prosciutto which is PAIN and SUFFERING since they're the only squadra ship ppl care about!!!! i accept them in the context of polysquadra but that's it
K: What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
hhhngh well Greed obviously altered my DNA from a young age, which predetermined me to die over Dimple.
T: Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
if i've fired the aro/ace or autism lasers at a character then there's no stopping me. but i think ones i'd actually have to fight over bc no one agrees w my correct opinions would be
aroace Laios and Izutsumi (they were immune to the succubi!! (mostly))
all current and former Spirits & Such employees + various hangers-on are aspec. a lot of ppl agree on aro Tsubomi but they're doing it wrong. they don't know her like i do
mean and bitchy arogay Rohan Kishibe. ALSO RISOTTO IS A BOTTOM I WILL NOT BE SILENCED--

THAT SCENE WHEN POWER GOT BLOOD FROM KISHIBE AFTER GETTING CHOKED, LIKE WHEN KISHIBE'S POURING THE BLOOD SHE HAS THAT CUTE HAPPY EXPRESSION WITH A LIGHT BLUSH ON IT AAAAA. Imagine that distant yet domesticated fiend!reader found another fiend with even better tasting blood than the previous one; probably an animal-related fiend or smth since some animals can be cooked and all that. Young!Kishibe walked in on you drinking that fiend's blood but what stands out to him were your hazy eyes, the blush across your face, and that teasing smile you gave the other fiend before asking him for more. That day Kishibe refrained from smoking and drinking while his colleagues were like ???? U good ???? (He wanted to be in that fiend's place SO BAD)
Ah yes, another thrilling moment of Kishibe being downbad for women who don't want him he literally is so up and down with his habits
But seeing the way you cling onto that fiend and the way you just lick up his blood like it's nothing with that smile on your face it made him pretty jealousssss

Denji! for 10, 13, and 23
10. Describe the character in one sentence
He’s a good kid even if he doesn’t look like it or act like it sometimes :’)
13. Your favorite friendship they have
Power of course :’D
23. Future headcanon
Okay I’m not sure if this one is actually implicitly canon or not considering how young quanxi looks even though she’s the same age as kishibe, but I am a firm believer that as a hybrid denji is never gonna age past 16 and once he figures that out he gets kinda upset about it. Everyone around him is growing up except him and he feels left behind, and barred from so many things (and potential relationships) because of it. Perpetually treated like a child even when hes an adult and it drives him crazy. Kind of ironic how when he was a kid with the yakuza and public safety no one (or hardly anyone) treated him like how they should treat a kid, but when he’s an adult it’s the opposite and everyone is acting like he’s still a teenager because that’s what he looks like
On a less depressing note, after highschool he gets a job as a zookeeper so he can be with animals to his hearts content, and/or once YouTube starts up, as a hobby he makes a cooking channel for some of the food he makes nayuta (a la imamu room on YouTube u should check them out they’re really cute and relaxing) because I do think living with nayuta has made him a good cook :) he’s come so far remember when he tried cooking for aki with power and they made him puke? Lol

Biweekly Media Roundup
- Trigun (Anime) - The Trigun fandom is the only reason I still go on Twitter, it’s been pretty insane there.
- Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe (Anime) - This was a pretty cool little series, it was nice to see the batshit world of Jojo again, and I quite like this story style of “Fucked up modern day folk tales but Rohan Kishibe is there”. Anime has trouble pulling off good horror but the ideas here are pretty solid, if nothing else the uniqueness of them was a nice treat.
- Alien Stage (Webseries) - Animatics and original web animations set to music are some of my favorite things, so I was deleted to find this little queer sci-fi musical death game series. The animation and world design is lovely, I love the storytelling through visuals, and the songs have been really solid so far-Ruler of My Heart being a notable earworm. I’m looking forward to the next installment, which judging by the match up will be heartbreaking.
- Tengoku Daimakyou (Anime) - Not much I feel like saying for now, but still enjoying the what the hell is happening ess of it all.
- Dr, Stone (Anime) - May or may not rewatch the whole series in between the new episodes. I shouldn’t, as I’m pretty busy, but also it gives me seratonin and I need more of Senku’s enthusiastic science shenanigans.
- Monster High (Cartoon) - Watching the Monster Doll Show, it’s definitely targeted towards a far younger crowd than me but I’m enjoying it for what it is, the character designs are very cute and I like how emotionally intelligent the characters are even if it means that conflicts get resolved way to quickly for any realistic stakes. I’ll save most of my thoughts for when I finish it but my opinion is positive overall.
- The Greatest Estate Developer (Webcomic) - Honestly just copy and paste what I said about Doctor Stone here but replace Senku with LLoyd and science with engineering, I just really like seeing wholesome stories about people using technical knowledge to improve the lives of everyone around them.
- Crazy Ex Girlfriend (TV) - I have no idea how I hadn’t watched this yet given how much I love musicals and how often I’ve listened to songs that are literally from it, but yeah, I’m finally watching this musical series. I’m liking it more than I expected, I had kind of thought I would like around half the songs and be unimpressed with the rest of the show at large, but it’s been consistently funny, endearing, and most the songs are actually bangers. I wouldn’t say I adore any of the characters, but their more likable than I thought-I’m glad to be here.
- The S Classes That I Raised (Webcomic) - I’m starting to get where the shippers are coming from with how fruity this is getting, which I’m on board with. I also feel bad about how much I like Riette as I don’t typically like characters who are mean to their siblings but her personality, design, and dragon-shifting make her so fun, I hope she joins the cast and flirts with Moon. And goes to family therapy with her brother.
Listening to: All Alien Stage songs, Various Crazy Ex Girlfriend songs including Hello Nice To Meet You and I Hate Everything But You, Jet Lag by Simple Plan, Nothing is Going Right by Meiyo, All This And Heaven You Too by Florence + The Machine, All Too Well cover by Jake Scott, That’s All by Genesis, The Dismemberment Song by Blue Kid, Eat Your Young and All Things End by Hozier, Wrecking Ball by Mother Mother, Anthropology by Akward Marina.

I'm so glad to see you back on here and writing again! And I got really excited when I saw chainsaw man on the list as well, I just read it and I love it!! Could you write some headcanons about Aki and Kishibe and what kind of dates they like to take their S/O's on? <3 Thank you!
It's good to be back :) and I'm so glad someone asked for Chainsaw man! I'm so pumped for the anime, I'm actually almost done with my reread. And I'm so glad you requested these two! Them and Quanxi are my crushes lol This was a lot of fun so I hope you enjoy!
Can we really quick appreciate young Kishibe???
Tumblr media
The things I would do to this man at 20 and 50 lol
Anyways I did if the S/O was not a public safety officer but if you want some angst feel free to request that version😈
What kind of date Aki would take his S/O on
Aki is such a romantic
I bet he would kick Denji and Power out of the house and cook S/O a meal. I feel like cooking food is a real act of love for Aki
I'm sure Denji and Power would try to sneak back in though so after spending more time stopping them from breaking in than hanging out with S/O he decides to take them on a walk
Power: “Bring Aki back by tomorrow morning! We need him to make us breakfast!”
Will apologize several times for his shitty roommates and assures S/O they will get a talking to
Since this wasn't really a part of the plan he's not entirely sure where to go but after wondering around for a while I feel like he'd stop in a quieter place with a bunch of trees nearby like a park or something
I've always felt like Aki had a strong tie to nature in the manga. Between the woods and beach being where important things happened to him
He resists the urge to smoke if S/O doesn't smoke because he doesn't want his bad habits to rub off on them but S/O can tell he want to and gives him permission.
From there I think it's finding a patch of grass to sit on, looking at the stars, talking about life and for Aki, forgetting about work and responsibilities.
Will obviously give S/O his jacket, even if it's not cold but apologizes if it smells like smoke.
Eventually it's time to leave so Aki walks them home. He tries to be really respectful, not wanting to make it seem like he wants or expects an invitation. Not going in for a kiss but he secretly really hopes that's what is S/O wants.
Plays it off very cool if they invite him in but is super excited and would smile like an idiot if he wasn’t forcing himself not to.
Is also secretly really glad he took precautions to keep S/O’s apartment location a secret. Power would come and drag him away in the morning to cook if she knew where he was.
Tumblr media
What kind of date Kishibe would take his S/O on
Is NOT a romantic. Not anymore.
I feel like after everything he's been through (plus the constant rejection from Quanxi) he kind of gave up on having anyone.
But he's been seeing this person for a while now and they make him feel just a little sane so he makes him for them.
Maybe not an S/O in a traditional sense but the closest he comfortable to having.
Big flamboyant gestures aren't really his thing. Small gestures aren't really his thing. But he will take S/O to his favorite bar and he's never taken anyone there. It's the closest he'll probably ever get to proposing.
It starts out with just some drinks and talking but mostly from S/O. Kishibe just likes to sit and listen about normal life. While he listens he imagines a domestic life where he comes home from his office job to S/O having made dinner. Maybe a couple of kids.
But after a few drinks he'll loosen up, maybe play some darts or pool. He obviously would win, they both know that but he throws the game every time.
“Your body is distracting, it messed me up”
And while he's not a big PDA person, especially in his older years, he’ll claim a kiss or two. And this man knows how to kiss- his kisses take the breath out of a person.
After drinks the two go to a late night ramen stand, just something to soak up the alcohol, but really Kishibe just wanted to see them in a better light.
Doesn't really talk much as they eat but does smile and stare a lot. Refusing to answer why he has that look on his face.
Part of him feels like if this is a date he should probably do something romantic but he's coming up short so he decides to just tell them he loves them.
Even if he's said it before it's still an event because he doesn't say it often. Not because he doesn't though, I think he just feels a little guilty making them happy when he could die any second.
Unlike Aki, at the end of the night he'll make it very clear what he wants.
Probably gets more handsy the closer they get to his place. But honestly it's 50/50 on if he's too drunk and just passes out with S/O in his arms.

The Horror Influences of Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan
https://ift.tt/2Zl6eQ9
This article contains spoilers for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is beloved by shounen anime fans for its nonstop action, absurd and over-the-top showdowns, and creative Stands (physical manifestations of one’s true self). It’s a bombastic series that defies predictions. We’re still waiting for the fifth part of the manga, Stone Ocean, to be released as an anime adaptation, and the story is still ongoing. Strangely, there’s still no confirmation that a fifth season is even coming yet.
In the meantime, however, we got something of a holdover: Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. An adaptation of a series of one-shot chapters from JoJo creator Hirohiko Araki, it bridges the gap between the fourth season, Diamond is Unbreakable, and the fifth season, Vento Aureo. But while it follows manga artist Kishibe Rohan and what he’s been up to between both seasons, it takes on a decidedly different slant than the vanilla anime. Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan takes more inspiration from episodic horror anthologies, like that of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. It is, by all counts, a horror series.
It’s a new direction for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, though not completely unexpected. The thing is, JoJo has always been riddled with disturbing, horrific, and downright chilling moments. They’ve just been couched between action-packed showdowns and bombastic character design so that the terror creeps in without you even realizing it’s there. Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan approaches the genre in a much more straightforward manner, though, wearing its influences on its sleeve. Both series, including JoJo to a staggering degree, are inherently spine-tingling properties, even if they don’t seem so at first blush.
Creator Hirohiko Araki is a ravenous horror fan, after all, and makes no secret of his passion for the genre. In his book, Hirohiko Araki’s Bizarre Horror Movie Analysis, he cites some of his top 20 favorite films as Misery, Alien, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The work itself is divided into several parts, each exploring a different branch of chilling media, such as “Bizarre Murderers,” “Animal Horror,” or “Sci-Fi Horror.” It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to think that, despite Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan originally being meant to be unrelated to JoJo, Araki created it to satisfy his love for the macabre.
The episode “Mutsu-kabe Hill” follows a woman named Naoko Osato, who belongs to a well-to-do family. She’s living in a house that belongs to said family along with boyfriend Gunpei Kamafusa. But she can’t be with Gunpei, as she’s already betrothed to a man her father has chosen. Plus, Gunpei is a family gardener, a profession her father won’t abide. The two end up arguing, and Nao tries to pay off Gunpei to get him to leave, as she knows her father and fiancé are on their way to the home. But tensions escalate as the two become violent.
Nao pushes him into a set of golf clubs and Gunpei dies instantly. He’s bleeding, and while Nao struggles to figure out what to do with his body, her father and fiancé are approaching her home. No matter what she does, she can’t get Gunpei’s corpse to stop bleeding. In the end, she lives with this bizarre phenomenon, telling no one about her plight, and doting on Gunpei’s corpse, disposing of the blood he continues to generate for the rest of her life.
Several comparisons can be drawn from this episode to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” in which the narrator commits a murder, dismembers a body, and hides it beneath some floorboards. Despite having seemingly gotten away with the perfect crime, the narrator is driven insane by the sound of his victim’s heartbeat. He ends up confessing to the authorities as he believes they can hear it, too. It’s the story of an unreliable narrator whose sanity is slipping.
Though the narrator in that story ended up confessing to ease his suffering, Nao chose to live with the consequences of her crime, succumbing to a monster that lives off of people’s affection. The stories are quite similar in tone, though with very different outcomes.
In “At a Confessional,” Rohan recounts a story of how he met a man who confided in him while in an Italian confessional. The man spoke of a beggar to whom he refused food and instead forced to work until he died. The beggar returned as a ghost, swearing revenge on the man who wronged him, promising he’d return on the happiest day of the man’s life. Return he does, as the man has enjoyed riches beyond belief, a beautiful marriage, and the birth of a daughter.
The beggar appears in the form of an apparition in the man’s daughter’s tongue. He forces the man to toss pieces of popcorn his daughter was eating into the air and catch them with his mouth three times in a row in an absurd challenge. If the man succeeds, his life will be spared. If not, he’s beheaded instantly.

This tale immediately recalls Stephen King’s Thinner, a similar story about a man who’s committed several wrongs, cursed the father of someone he’s murdered — this time, because he runs over a woman while driving and engaged in a sexual act with his wife. The curse finds the man, who is obese, becoming thinner and thinner at an uncontrollable rate.
Eventually, there are options available to the man, who pleads for a resolution. He’s informed by the same person who cursed him that he can eat a strawberry pie with his blood in it and die, or give it to someone else for him to be spared. It’s just as gruesome as forcing the rich victim in Kishibe Rohan to munch popcorn or die.
In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, the scares seem to come directly from a series of inspirations for Araki instead of new stories based on the media he’s obviously consumed.
The first JoJo arc, Phantom Blood, sets the stage by introducing a swath of Gothic horror elements. It introduces the eventual vampiric rise of DIO in a Victorian society, which directly references classic novels like Dracula and Frankenstein. There’s even a serial killer named Jack the Ripper, who faces off against Jonathan and his allies, pulled straight out of history — a perpetrator of grisly murders who ends up transformed into a zombie. The undead are also a major component of Phantom Blood, likely due in part to Araki’s love for classic zombie cinema.
In the arc Stardust Crusaders, Jean-Paul Polnareff finds himself de-aged by a Stand user named Alessi. A young woman named Malèna nurses him back to health, up until Alessi uses his Stand, Sethan, unceremoniously de-ages her to that of a fetus outside of the womb. A few of Araki’s favorite horror movies of all time, including Basket Case, center on body horror, which doesn’t make this narrative decision surprising. But for those reaching that point in the story for the first time, it’s chilling in a way that even some of the most nightmarish films can’t even touch.
While the visual of a fetus itself isn’t as offensive as some gnarled, disfigured victim, its implications are disturbing, to say the least. A fetus outside of a mother’s womb will eventually succumb to a slow death, especially one of Malèna’s apparent age. That makes Polnareff’s eventual victory over Alessi and his Stand so bittersweet.
The entirety of the fourth arc, Diamond is Unbreakable, plays out like a classic slasher flick with the introduction of Yoshikage Kira, a man with a powerful obsession with hands to the point of fetishism. He murders women with “beautiful hands,” then keeps the hands as his “girlfriends.” It wouldn’t be a stretch to compare Kira to classic killers like Psycho‘s Norman Bates or The Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter, as Kira is believable and charming when he isn’t committing grisly murders.
Most of JoJo’s Stands are horrific on their own, and even though their story arcs enhance their terrifying power, there’s a fair amount of fridge horror to be found in these beings. The Freddy Krueger-like Death 13 can kill you in a nightmarish dream world while you sleep. Metallica (yes, named after the heavy metal band) forces you to cough up razor blades or have scissors burst from your chest.
Another Stand, Green Day, can secrete a deadly mold that will rot and destroy the flesh of anything it touches in an instant. Lastly, Rohan Kishibe himself has a fairly disconcerting Stand: Heaven’s Door. It allows him to literally read someone like a book, then erase parts of their being, or add in what he pleases, like the ability to learn a new language as his pal Koichi asks in Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan.
It’s easy to see how Araki has masterfully melded horror into every space when it comes to both JoJo as well as Kishibe Rohan. With that in mind, it’s strange that the former has been relegated only to a series of one-shots when it shows so much potential as its own project, in which Araki gets to stretch his Rod Serling-esque legs or impart some very Argento-like stylings into his works. For now, we can appreciate what’s there — and continue finding parallels to additional well-loved classics in the genre.

Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan is available to stream on Netflix now.

Once-Upon in Morioh-Cho: Welcome to Morioh-Cho 🚏
In the previous chapter:
- What a weird girl.
Sliding the shutters, he sets up to work again.
Chapter 1:
It is seven a.m and Morioh-Cho is being awoken. In the one small house the girl is sleeping and while sunlight is wading through the windows. Solitude is bliss, but a ringing alarm does not care about it.
- Oh my God! Seven o'clock in the morning come to us from truly hell. Damn, my routine has come back again.
Despite the fact that Sophie hates early times of day, she is being excited. After brushing teeth and having breakfast, she has run to the table and opened a laptop, where E-mail was sent.
- Dear Sophie,
We are aware of that you arrived at the town yesterday. We hope your trip was not uncomfortable that is why we ask our new colleague to prepare something. You are a second-year student, a young girl, who can show the readership new “fresh” point of view. Morioh-Cho is admired all over Japan because of its famous people, high standard of living, life satisfaction and lower murder rate. You need to write an article or to interview an interesting person for the thesis “Morioh-Cho > Tokyo”. You must prove that Japan is not only a capital but it includes captivating small towns. Good luck! See you on Monday.
Best regards,
K.G
Sophie was sitting in the classroom, when the teacher approaches her and said that the girl would be sent for practice. She was studying hardly during these two years that is why the university has chosen Sophie. The committee analyzed her personal knowledge in the field of Romance-Germanic languages and they had a decision to improve Sophie’s skills because of practice at radio station. The town of Morioh-Cho became a perfect place to do it.
- An interesting day starts from an interesting challenge. Obviously, I absolutely don’t know this area and people who live here. Perhaps, I should go to the library, where I can find out new information, shouldn’t I?
Morioh-Cho is a charming town, representing as a suburb of the City S. The area is not populous which includes 58 713 citizens. Travelers visit Morioh-Cho to see marvelous attractions like Angelo Stone, Cape Boing Boing, Phantom Alley, Rohan Kishibe’s house and many others. Despite the terrible appearance, Angelo Stone is surprisingly famous as a meeting place for lovers, Сape Boing Boing is admired by many sailors, Phantom Alley scares foreign visitors by the legend about a dead girl and one day Rohan Kishibe’s house was rebuilt due to a fire whose repair cost around 700 million yen. Sophie did not expect that she would be suddenly acquainted with the last sightseeing’s owner.
A Morioh-Cho library is a lovely ancient building which is located in the Eastern part of the town. Benches are set up in the small yard, surrounding by the fragrant apple trees. Sometimes their branches touch windows, making a sense of rustling music.
The books’ house amazes the girl by its variety. There are many shelves of different creative works, representing all kinds of genres: classical literature, science fiction, comics, encyclopedias, vocabularies and tables with fresh newspapers and magazines.
- Smells like my grandmother’s pantry.
As Sophie thinks this place is not very popular among the locals. In the one short novel a Russian writer Checkov mentioned that a library existed because of young girls and Jews that is why there is only one figure here, excepting our second-year student.
It is a handsome man of medium height who has a beautiful slender frame. The emerald eyes is looking at the bright animal encyclopedia, describing types of exotic birds. His sharp features have got the girl’s attention: arched eyebrows, long lashes, a straight nose, a perfect-size mouth and cheekbones look magnetic. His hair is a dark-green colour and hairdo represents as an undercut that is aligned sideways. Obviously, this man has a great taste in clothes because all parts of the look match perfectly. He seems pretty young but at the same time, his face shows good life experience.
- These hands… The fingers are so long and sophisticated. Who knows, maybe he is fond of drawing or playing the piano.
Sophie keeps her gaze on him directly. He is being inspiring the girl that is why she looks again and again. She is being afraid that this charming man will notice her, making an awkward situation for both, but he does not even think about breaking away from his book. It is for a while.
- Please, help us! He is holding a gun!
- Wait, calm down! I call the police!
The man has immediately shut the book and run to the window. His eyes are turning from shining green to dark- swampy, looking at the street with hostility and astonishment. His face is changing, expressing grimaces of fear or confidence. He has gone outside.
- What has happened? What did he see?
The street is crowded. People have frozen in various poses in front of the girl's eyes: someone is lying, pressed to the ground, someone is running away without looking back and others are standing rooted to the spot with faces are full of horror. Finally, it has become clear what happened: an unknown masked man decided to rob a new jewelry store that has opened nearby. The criminal has already managed to take the seller hostage.
- I take all the money, otherwise I will kill him! Do you listen, bastards?! I will shoot his head, if you interfere!
Sophie has realized. There will be no other chance.
- [Mrs. Brightside], teleport me.
Everything happens in the blink of an eye. After a couple of seconds, Sophie is already sitting on wet pavement, holding her hand in the victim's cheek. Distance between them and the robber is enough to be safe.
- Your shoulder… It is bleeding…
Sophie uses her Stand very seldom. He got this ability, when she was a first-year student: someone hit her with the gold arrow, while she had realized that it was her last day when she may breathe and enjoy her life. The girl closed her eyes, which were full of tears, and thought about the darling people, the family. Instead of death [Mrs. Brightside] was arisen.
- Look! The police are driving! Higashikata-san! It is Higashikata-san!
- How are you? Do you need help? - says a woman in white clothes.
- I’m okay. Need to bandage his shoulder, will you? Let me go, I'm in hurry, - says Sophie, looking at her watch. She must get out of here.
- Morning, Rohan, what happened here?
- Josuke, what a “nice” meeting. Another fool tried to steal money and took the person hostage. I used [Heaven’s Door], you shouldn’t be worry. Josuke, I have got something… A weird girl arrived one day ago. I saw her today with the injured seller. She made strange things and I suppose a girl is a Sta…
- Rohan, you’re being paranoid. I don’t want to hear anything about your silly guesses. We have been quiet for more than ten years. Don’t put labels on the person who just achieved our bed town.
- But I see her around the library and then…
- Rohan, the conversation is over.
Sophie has approached the house, wiping sweat from your face.
- Higashikata-san, welcome me to Morioh-Cho!

- A continuation from the previous au-
They had a long journey ahead of them, still the travel felt less fatiguing since they kept each other company. With the small fortune they both were able to carry and the sword Josuke had hidden underneath his cloak, Josuke and Rohan trailed through darkened woods and discovered a windy road headed through the outskirts of the town. They followed it for a few hours before retreating back to the forest in fear of the chance of being noticed.
As they both continued on their path, Josuke couldn't help but consider himself lucky that if it wasn't for Rohan he would have been murdered on the spot without exception. Even so, he doubts that he'd get a second chance after kidnapping the clairvoyant this time around; 'they might have already placed a bounty over my head by now', he thought to himself grimly.
Still the samurai hadn't regretted his decision, he managed to rescue Rohan from the imminent danger in the shrine, and especially now watching how content Rohan seemed to be with all native species of plants and animals surrounding them. They decided to take a break by a river bank that followed up to the mountains. If he had remembered correctly, he was told by the prisoner that all they have to do is cross over the mountain until then reach a small town outside the emperor's rule. This town was known to welcome refugees and foreigners, he needed to find a man named Avdol. He never received the prisoner's name but he can tell but his silver hair and blue eyes that he was a foreigner himself; as for his reason for being imprisoned he had broken a priceless artifact from the Shrine and was waiting for his comrade to pay for his release, but had given Josuke tips on how to sneak out undetected.
As much as Josuke wanted to reach the mountain as soon possible he knew that he couldn't force Rohan to push himself, more so with the injury, so he decides it would be best to salvage food for the both of them, but when he turns around to tell the clairvoyant, he sees that he had disappeared. In a panic, the samurai called out for him only to find Rohan crouched down by some nearby bushes collecting berries and herbs telling the taller man to be quiet before they get caught and how he was finding food for them; Leave it to Rohan to assess the situation they were in rather quickly.
Josuke should have suspected his lov- partner wasn't in any real danger but still he warns Rohan to stay close just to be sure. Rohan jokes that he's being treated like a child and that he could have survived out here longer than Josuke would have, as he watched Josuke pick some poison ivy next to him.
It wasn't an ideal situation to be in the woods during nightfall, so they both continued their trek and discovered a small tavern at the base of the mountain. Relieved to find a warm shelter before sunset, they both hurried to it without a second thought.
From the outside it looked pleasant, rustic and homey. Soft wooden planks and marble stones make up most of the building's outer structure. Although the windows were covered by curtains, they could see a soft glow of light illuminating and faintly hear a traditional melody playing from within. Enticing them to go in.
The tavern was cozier than anticipated, almost vacant, saved for the bartender cleaning a wine glass at the countertop and a worker wiping off the tables. It was safe to assume the bartender was in charge so both walked up to her and asked if she had a room available to stay in, informing her that they were simply travelers heading to the next town over. The bartender eyed them cautiously, her stern cobalt eyes looking over Josuke's for a rather long time before she gave a collected sigh and accepted their payment, warning them not to cause too much trouble as she called over her worker to take them to the guest room.
Josuke and Rohan never thought a woman with such beauty could be so intimidating but they assumed she must have dealt with suspicious people coming to her tavern frequently. On the other hand, her worker, Suzie Q, was delighted to have them as guests as she fawned over the two, telling them how much of a cute couple were. They both immediately became flushed, Josuke being the first to protest her claims before Rohan did, however Suzie Q had a strong suspicion about it and only giggled at them before she took her leave, leaving the two to mull over what she just said.
Were they actually a couple now? Sure they both eloped together, and shared a few kisses here and there but that was in the heat of the moment. They haven't done anything else beyond that. And besides, it wasn't like they knew how to go 'that far,' right? Then it finally dawns on the pair that they were alone in this room with nothing but a lantern and large futon with two pillows, creating just an awkward atmosphere for the two. After a brief moment of silence, Rohan was the first to speak and tells Josuke they should share the futon, how it would be warmer with the both of them there, while Josuke rejects it completely, insisting he can sleep on the floor with just a pillow. It wasn't that he was embarrassed he just respected Rohan's space and wanted him to get better.
Rohan rolled his eyes but didn't press him further, telling him he's headed for the restroom down the hallway.
By the time Rohan returned, Josuke was acting even more self-conscious, finding the idiot ruffling his own hair as if he was being tormented by an evil spirit or deep in his thoughts. Rohan had attended several ceremonies of marriage and read stories of romance in his studies before but he couldn't help but find Josuke's reaction rather charming. He would have never guessed the other man would be so vulnerable to love, not that it was surprising given he could read the other like an open book.
To save his love from his inner turmoil, Rohan pulls at Josuke's robe to come join him in the futon, insisting that he needs help with placing the new bandages on his wound. Josuke reluctantly followed afterwards.
Josuke made sure he was careful around Rohan as he delicately wrapped the bandages around his injury and chest, while trying his best not to ogle at Rohan's skin for so long. It was soft and if it wasn't for the wound marking his skin, Rohan would have been flawless. Unfortunately for him, Rohan had caught on to his lingering stares and leaned back against the samurai just to tease him, causing the taller one to gently push him away, and try to dress Rohan back. Of course, Rohan didn't make it easier on his behalf and decided to cling to him in retaliation and ended up pushing Josuke to lie on the futon.
The sight of Josuke's face was enough to make Rohan burst in laughter, he's never seen someone so red, almost like a freshly picked tomato while Josuke only pouted, looking away from the object of his torment while he tried to peel Rohan off of him. But the clairvoyant was very stubborn and after some struggle Josuke gave up, with a cheeky Rohan smirking triumphantly as he laid against his chest.
They spent the night talking about their past, about how Josuke and his mother joined the shrine, everything, and Josuke finally learns about Rohan's childhood. How Rohan was raised within the palace where Josuke's mother had once lived, Rohan's mother served as an oracle there before she was caught in an accident alongside her husband. Thankfully for the king, he had no worries as he discovered Rohan's gift early on and soon he was deemed a replacement for his mother. His parent's funeral was a short one, with only the king and a few royal subjects attending and offering condolences to the young child. He vaguely remembers spending his days in the palace with a pinked haired maid who would offer him sugary confections and journals during his private lessons and being prohibited from stepping outside. He was given his own room where he would offer his prophetic readings to the King and the nobles who requested his presence- extending to feudal lords and military dictators as well. He distinctly remembers the strong smell of cigars and alcohol that filled his room as he offered his readings. He always had to feign ignorance otherwise it would cause conflict, but he knew deep in his heart he wanted nothing more than to quit because he could sense how corrupted these individuals were. But for the sake of survival, he continued on.
Then he was sent out to various shrines to offer his services before arriving at the Kishibe Shrine to continue his studies, however not welcomed as the first son of the Kishibe household who lost his family but still the prophet whose purpose was to bring prosperity and wealth to the Shrine. Just a pawn to use, Rohan described bitterly to Josuke as he buried his head closer to him.
Josuke wasn't certain of what to say, instead he pulled Rohan closer, wrapping his arms around him tightly, reassuring him that he would never let that happen to him again. And on that note, they both fell asleep.
---
The bartender smiled to herself, as she walked past the couple's door and made her way back to the bar.
She couldn't quite place her finger on it, it must have been curiosity that made her keep a close eye on the pair- or maybe Suzie's eccentric chatter falling into eyeshot when she warned her to keep it down during the evenings.
She sat in one of the empty chairs by the countertop and pulled out a folded sheet of paper from her pocket. This man look awfully familiar to the photo she received earlier that day, recalling how two police officials visited her inn to warn her about a prisoner who kidnapped some priest, and before she was able to address it, Suzie appears right next her and looks over her shoulder to say,
"I'm surprised you didn't send them out tonight, considering the hefty bounty over their heads; you do know you could be suspected of treason for helping a criminal, right Lisa Lisa?"
"You act as if I'm doing this for the first time, but yes, I do. And I can tell that they are good people too."
Maybe she should offer them breakfast before they leave.

My Review: 🌘🌘🌘🌘🌘 5
This is the anime I've watched in the longest duration. I mean, I usually breeze through
anime series in a day or two, but with 3 seasons on Netflix (4 parts in total) consisiting
of 113 episodes of at least 20 minutes each, and with the quarantine being over, I spent
more than a couple of weeks to finish it all. That being said, I still haven't watched the
Golden Wind part of this series yet. Now that was a lengthy intro. Off to the actual
review.
So it starts off with the first season set in the 19th century. I immediately loved it
because it reminded me a lot of Jane Austen's books and how the story was narrated is
really good. Believe me, I was confused at first because if you search for images of Jojo,
you wouldn't expect the anime to start like this. Then a complete 180 degrees plotwist fell
on me I was so shocked at the turn of events. I mean, I knew it is supernatural themed but
I never imagined it to be like that and so graphic!
This anime is also heartbreaking in a lot of ways. I don't want to spoil you so I won't say
anything else. Let's just say there's a whole lotta drama to the first 2 seasons of this.
The fight scenes are also genius! There was much thought put into it and although it comes
off as a "manly" anime, you could tell that there is a lot of psychological war in between
and everything is not really black and white.
And the suspense? Don't get me started! It can be compared to a local "tele-novela" or tv
drama. Some nights when it's just me who's left awake watching it, I would scream in vain
because of what happened in the show or when I'm super psyched about what's going to
happen. As if the characters can hear me!
The Diamond is Unbreakable season/arc is more laid back in terms of drama. There's now a
lot of comedy woven into it, too. And this is where I realized how cool Jotaro is. Yes,
only in this arc. I love his maturity and calmness.
And the artwork is so brilliant. It's a shame if I don't talk about that. The art style
changes a bit in every season to show the progression of time, because the whole series
starts from the 19th century to the early 90s.
Would I recommend it?
That's a definite and automatic yes. It may seem weird or unattractive at first, but please
give it a chance and you'll surely love it like I have! I wouldn't give it 5 stars if I
thought it didn't have the chance to compete with the other anime out there!
As a bonus, you'd be happy to know that the voice actors of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy
VII, Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler, Sinbad, Sho of Psychopass, Eren of Attack on
Titan, Todoroki of BNHA, Meliodas of Seven Deadly Sins, Ayato of Tokyo Ghoul, Shinsuke of
Gintama, Gin of Food Wars, Hotohori of Fushigi Yuugi, Seishiro of Starmyu and Kotetsu of
Touken Ranbu are here!
Cosplay plans: I only thought of one, Reimi the ghost from the Diamond is Unbreakable arc.

Yall know that Vincenzo is gonna find a way to get rid/Jail/arrest Han Seo in the end right? Considering Vincenzo isn't letting off any character that turned from the bad side - Parasite imitation guy, the two bad guys from the jail eps working for Vincenzo, actually I'd consider the shingkwang bank guy too - it's likely he's gonna go back on trying to help Han Seo in the end.
Therefore, I'm guessing, it's very likely Han Seo isn't gonna have a happy ending. Even though I really wish he would have one.

Anyone else catch that little jump when Han Seo hears the hockey stick rattle against the metal cargo box and rushes away to the side and tells the other two to get out of the way when he sees his brother in the hockey outfit and KNOWS some crazy shit is going to happen?

Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe Anime Review
A new spinoff from the JoJo world staring mangaka Rohan Kishibe is out on Netflix. Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe adapts the spinoff source of the same name into an animated series of horrifying tales lead Rohan experienced prior to and sometime following his meeting of Josuke Higashikata, Koichi Hirose, and Okuyasu Nijimura. Rohan tackles curses, ghosts, and ghouls in what’s hopefully the first half of a two part adaptation.
Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe is a 2017 shounen OVA adaptation of the original 1997 manga of the same name. It is produced by David Productions and licensed by Netflix for streaming in the US. Four chapters have been animated and are available in English and Japanese audio.
Editor’s Note: This review may contain near complete to complete spoilers for Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe and it’s source material (main and namesake).
Former JoJo antagonist turned protagonist Rohan Kishibe takes center stage in a new spinoff.
Originally debuting in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4/Diamond is Unbreakable, Rohan started off as a villain antagonizing Koichi while pretending to be his friend. Upon meeting Josuke Higashikata and learning what happens to people who insult his iconic hairdo, Rohan while not completely turning into a hero does end up becoming a valuable asset to the Joestars of Morioh. As Koichi prepares to depart to Italy (starting the events of Golden Wind), he asks Rohan for a favor who instead decides to tell him and the others about his supposed encounters with the supernatural.
JoJo focuses on it’s beloved horror elements in Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe.
THE GOOD: The initial source to Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe is eight chapters long and ran from 1997 to 2018 with chapters being released several years apart from one another. The anime follows a similar production schedule with the first four episodes being released within a year from each other except for the last two which were both released in 2020. The four chapters adapted in the anime are “Millionaire Village”, “Mutsu-kabe Hill”, “At a Confessional”, and “The Run”.  In the first episode (in Netflix’s order) Rohan encounters Koichi who asks him to use his stand Heaven’s Door to force fluent Italian into his life story as he’s getting ready to head out to the country on behalf of the Speedwagon Foundation for a mission. Rohan decides to tell Koichi of his own time spent in Italy following his meeting of the former and the other Joestars. Rohan learns that a young man had been cursed after accidentally killing a homeless man having overheard his story when he incidentally posed as a preacher in a confessional box. The curse relays that the homeless man shall come for the young man as a cursed spirit to kill him during the happiest moment of his life.  Several years pass and the young man has become insanely wealthy with a family, one day while out with his daughter he’s suddenly attacked by her who has been possessed by the homeless man now seeking his revenge. The young man tries to claim that the homeless man’s death wasn’t his fault, so the homeless man says they’ll let faith decide. He challenges the young man to catch popcorn that his daughter was eating in his mouth three times after tossing it in a high distance. The young man succeeds twice following distractions from pigeons, however on the third try he fails and has his head cut off. Rohan is about to question the validity of the man’s story before he’s stopped by the man explaining that he had switched identities with a loyal servant through surgery and the servant was the one who was killed by the spirit. It is then revealed that the servant having been tricked has also cursed the man along with the homeless man swearing together to curse him on the day of his daughter’s happiest moment in life as he continues his escape. Following this story, Rohan meets with his editor, Minoru Kaigamori asking for an advanced for work on his latest manga shocking him. He explains that he lost his money purchasing a huge piece of land in Mutsukabezaka rumored to be haunted, but scheduled for road work. He purchased the land in an effort to prevent the supposed spirit from being scared off. The supposed spirit belongs to Naoko Osato; a woman scheduled for an arranged marriage by her wealthy family but is visited by her lover Gunpei their gardener who she accidentally kills after an argument gets physical. Gunpei’s body seemingly continues to pour blood no matter what she did. When her fiancée and father come to visit Osato panics and hides the body while clearing the blood. The wound pours blood years after Osato marries everyday requiring her to clean the spill.
In the present, Rohan heads to the property where he meets a young girl. After a discussion with the girl she trips and suffers a surprising fatal wound. Rohan is stunned to see her body bleeding out profusely like Gunpei in the story. Using Heaven’s Door he looks into her past learning she is the child of Gunpei & Osato and is suffering from the effects of a generational yokai curse. Rohan rewrites the girl’s past erasing the curse and saving her life. He decides to use the story as inspiration for his new manga. Later he meets up with another editor of his, Kyōka Izumi who wants Rohan to accompany her on a trip to purchase a famous villa where the owners are notoriously strict on manners. They arrive and pick up a lost baby bird & are then greeted by doorman Ikkyū. Upon entering the home Ikkyu immediately notes that they have already failed to respect the three main rules. Kyōka begs for a second chance, but gets a call informing her that her mother and boyfriend died in a car crash together. Rohan also finds the baby bird has been killed. He quickly uses Heaven’s Door on Ikkyu learning that the villa has a direct connection to mountain gods who rewards those who succeed in following the rules and punishes those who don’t with a sacrifice of something precious. Rohan’s use of his stand causes another break in the rules which gives Kyōka a heart attack. Ikkyu gives Rohan a chance to redeem himself and Kyōka if he can properly eat an ear of corn. Rohan passes and tricks Ikkyu into failing to remain respectful of the house rules reversing the infliction of the mountain gods on Kyōka and her family. The final story is told from the perspective of male model Yoma Hashimoto who works out at the same gym as Rohan. He quickly rises to fame & success while forming a rivalry with Rohan following a competition back in the past in which Rohan cheated to win. Yoma becomes obsessed with improving his physique and steals money from his girlfriend for more high end equipment. After showcasing strange behavior on top of the stealing she kicks Yoma out. While in the gym alone Yoma challenges Rohan to the same competition they had before which is accepted. Yoma increases the stakes by breaking the glass window behind them as the speed on the treadmill goes faster killing whoever stops first. Rohan attempts to grab the remote controlling the machines, but is stopped and has his fingers broken by Yoma. The speed continues to accelerate as Yoma’s body changes. Rohan uses Heaven’s Door and learns that Yoma killed anyone that got in the way of his training including his girlfriend. Upon further investigation Rohan realizes that Yoma has become the avatar of speed god Hermes. As Yoma wins the competition Rohan uses his stand to force Yoma to stoop his treadmill instead seemingly killing him. Rohan shows regret for feeling forced to kill Yoma and likely earning Hermes’ wrath causing trouble in the future.
Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe is an eye-opening experience in just how expansive the potential of the JoJo world can be. And as we’ve seen with recent arcs for the franchise mangaka Hirohiko Araki is not afraid to experiment with his work. Part six, Stone Ocean acts as a soft reboot for the franchise completely upon it’s climax redesigning several fan favorite characters as well as successfully introducing a new wave of main characters in between. While Rohan is focused on an already established character itself, it does build the world of JoJo without a dependency on stands. Instead opting to tackle the more supernatural elements that’s spread throughout the centered world. Something that’s consistently praised in the JoJo fandom is Araki’s use of horror for more dramatic scenes in the series. This is where ‘Rohan’ gets most of it’s inspiration from. It weirdly fits for Rohan to be surrounded by non-stand related supernatural phenomenon oddly fits his character being a mangaka and all. It’s also been suggested that Rohan is also an avatar for Araki himself within the series.
Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe breaths new life into a decades old franchise.
I mentioned early that Rohan while a good assist to the Joestars isn’t a full on good guy, but Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe explores his more human side. He’s still an asshole, but he has a heart when it counts even going out of his way to save one of his editors who’s nearly killed from mountain gods. It shows his development is continuing to grow after the end of the Kira arc when he expressed his sadness for Reimi Sugimoto finally being able to move on following Kira’s defeat. ‘Rohan’ also introduces the potential of gods possibly being used in the JoJo franchise. I’m not too familiar with the spinoff material over the main canon so I wouldn’t know if they haven’t already done this. But I do think it’s odd for Araki to reference gods twice in the spinoff if he wasn’t considering having them be apart of a main storyline or spinoff down the line. If anything ‘Rohan’ proves that JoJo can indeed exist without the use of stands, as it did with Harmon before. Thus keeping the franchise’s ability to stay fresh vast and wide. In regards to the new characters introduced there’s not really much to them they were more or less minor plot devices to either introduce the story or move it forward. If Araki wants to continue with experimenting on giving other characters their own self-contained stories this could always be changed in the future.
Old favorites have small speaking roles in Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe.
THE BAD: While not likely it’s possible that the four out of eight adapted chapters could be all there is. At least for quite a while. The COVID-19 pandemic heavily effecting the anime industry aside David Productions has been quite busy these days picking up series after series for adaptation efforts, And it’s significantly slowed down how much work they can do on the JoJo franchise. If you were expecting some decent interaction between Rohan and the core cast you’ll be rather disappointed. While some characters have voice roles in the spinoff this is very much the Rohan show and they have maybe a combined five or so combined minutes of screen time with him. Speaking of limited appearance, Josuke Higashikata does make an appearance in the spinoff. Two in fact, but they aren’t voiced which is odd. Story wise it makes a bit of sense as Rohan kind of despises Josuke so maybe it was intentional? Or maybe they couldn’t schedule Josuke’s Japanese VA for the spinoff to do lines and just cut him from having a speaking role.
New characters and experiences opens JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure into a world with limited Stand use.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe feels like it’s job was to be more than “just another spinoff” and it succeeds with flying colors. It not only properly represents it’s namesake, but it also provides the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise with a multitude of doors to open for experimentation into new directions and the potential move away from Stands in the near future. There’s tons of JoJo material outside of the canon which could and should be animated in some point in time, including a sequel novel to Golden Wind which people still debate on the canonical relation it has to the series. It’s nice seeing a series that debuted in the 80s still having some more tricks up it’s sleeve to captivate viewers almost forty years later. Otaku Dome gives Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe a 95 out of 100.

Prince Animage 2012 Sanpei Yuuko (role of Afuro Terumi) Interview
Let Your Wishes Ride On The Wings of a God
Kidokawa Seishuu’s new coach is the owner of a regal beauty. As he’s become an adult he’s calmed down a lot (apparently?) but his actions are still unpredictable. Of course, it’s our Aphrodi-sama!
Aphrodi’s adult self caption: He wears a gray suit and his arms are folded. His hair is tied with a red ribbon and hangs over one shoulder. His hair is still as long and beautiful and blonde as his younger self but now the ends are streaked with blue.
In the third round of the national competition Holy Road the opponent is last year’s champions Kidokawa Seishuu. Not only are they a very strong champion team, but the new coach leading them is Afuro Terumi ‘Aphrodi’! ‘I can’t believe Aphrodi is appearing again. I never thought I’d get to see his adult self,’ his voice actress Sanpei Yuuko tells us. Up until now, all of the reappearing members have had some connection to their school in some way, but doesn’t Aphrodi have no relation to Kidokawa?
‘Isn’t that fact that he’s so mysterious one of his attractive points? He can grow wings and fly through the air and stop time - because he’s a god! (lol)’ If we look back to 10 years ago, he’s called himself a God as a member of one of the strongest teams of the Football Frontier, he’s battled against aliens, and been a striker for the team of his mother land, Korea. Suddenly appearing out of nowhere is his specialty and his GO appearance is no exception.
'Thanks to everyone’s support, even four years later I can return to Inazuma! Everyone! Don’t forget about Terumi-sama!’
‘Even though he’s ten years older, everyone still calls him Aphrodi!’
Q How did you find playing Aphrodi for the first time in a while?
A He really has become an adult! He was a pretty chill kid, but now he’s become even more chill. He’s become like a big brother. I feel like his way of speaking is kinder than before. As an adult, it would be good if he can act as a guide for the kids.
Q In his debut scene, Kidou exclaims 'Aphrodi!’ which makes fans wonder, does everyone still call him that?
A Ahahaha, that’s right. Even Ishido Shuuji-san called him Aphrodi.
Q We thought it was only something he called himself from back when he thought he was a god.
A Speaking of which, Burn and Gazel became Nagumo and Suzuno in the FFI arc. All of them chose their names for themselves. Afuro is an unusual surname in the first place. It would be funny if he had an afro, along with his name being Afuro (lol).
Q Sanpei-san, what kind of person do you think Aphrodi is?
A I think he’s a very diligent kid. In Inazuma everyone is very passionate about soccer, but in the first season his desire to become stronger was so intense that he resorted to Kami no Aqua. All because of that bad man (bitter laugh). But he met Endou-kun and the others through this and through their love of soccer he realized their’s was a different kind of strength. So when he appeared again in season 2 he repays the favor, doesn’t he? He’s faithful. To the extent that it put him in hospital (laughs).
Q How do you feel about his relationship with Endou?
A I feel like Aphrodi really likes Endou kun as a person. He calls him 'Endou kun’ a lot. So this time it was a pity I couldn’t say his name at all. Instead, when Someoka-san appeared and Aphrodi called him Someoka without a suffix, everyone burst into laughter. His voice actor even said, 'Since when were Aphrodi and I such good friends that he doesn’t use -san?’ (lol)
Q Aphrodi and Someoka haven’t really interacted much until now.
A Yeah. I thought it was funny as I wondered, just what kind of relationship do you two have? I guess they crossed paths by chance while they were active in the pro leagues. I guess they became friends.
Q How do you feel about Nagumo and Suzuno who he invited to the Korean team?
A I get the impression they’re both quite childish. They’re always arguing with each other, and were even confrontational with Hiroto - I think they’re really like quarreling brothers. I wonder did Aphrodi reach out to them because of Endou’s influence? 'Come with me?’ (lol)
Q What do you think they’re saying in the picture below (Aphrodi, Burn, Gazel, Midorikawa and Hiroto)?
A I feel like Aphrodi is trying to ease any tension between them. 'You two, look at the camera!’ He’ll say. And to Suzuno 'Don’t scowl so much like that,’ (lol) This time he appears as the coach for Kidokawa Seishuu and I was easily able to imagine Aphrodi teaching soccer to kids.
Q The situation at Kidokawa is kind of complicated. What are Aphrodi’s intentions?
A I think he definitely wants to get the kids who love soccer so much to leave their arguments behind. Kidokawa are under the control of Fifth Sector and but I think I would be better if they won with their own soccer. The most important thing is that he helps the kids.
Q What impression do you have of Kidokawa’s players?
A I feel sorry for the Taki brothers. Yoshihiko’s abilities are yet undeveloped and he can’t use a keshin but he really loves soccer with all of his heart and he’s very courageous. His older brother Sousuke is proud of his power in a way that reminds me of Aphrodi’s old self. And the captain Kishibe is in a tough position. Aphrodi is familiar with the scheme of 'Children being controlled by a big organization’ so I think he wants to help in any way he can.
Q Are there any characters from the original series whose GO version you like?
A He hasn’t appeared in the anime yet, but how about the person who looks like he earns the most money - Hiroto? Haha. I saw a picture from his game appearance and with his glasses he looks like he’s working the hardest! He’s probably financing the Sun Garden? Hiroto’s voice actor said to me 'Thank goodness, doesn’t Hiroto look like he’s doing well? And no matter how you look at it, Someoka looks like a mafia gangster.’
Q Are there any characters that haven’t appeared yet that you’re interested in?
A The ones I’m most worried about are Suzuno and Nagumo. They seem like they’ll have a hard time becoming normal productive members of society. I think they’ll always be naughty kids (lol). And I want to see the other Zeus members too. I wonder how they’ve grown.
Q What kind of things do you think Aphrodi himself has been doing these past ten years?
A I hope he continued with soccer. After he lost in the Asian preliminaries, I think he’d definitely do his best to train himself. Even though it wasn’t shown in the anime, he’s definitely won a lot of matches, haha. Oh, and he appears on TV as a star player! TV commercials for shampoo and beauty products would suit his pretty face.
Q This time Aphrodi didn’t have any winning matches either.
A Yeah! Every time he appears he’s on the losing side. I think that in the last ten years he’s definitely had both wins and loses which make him who he is today. Wouldn’t his special moves have evolved too? Fly even higher with your fluffy wings! I’m waiting to see that Aphrodi (lol).
Blast from the past!? Aphrodi’s junior high self!
The '12.23 Inazuma Eleven GO’ between the commercial break is the only time Junior High Aphrodi appears. After we finished recording and I played him as an adult I decided 'Okay, now please make him be a middle school kid again.’ (lol) Since it’s been a year and a half since I played young Aphrodi, it was a bit difficult. If you didn’t catch it live, definitely check it out on the DVD. (Sanpei Yuuko)
