bestie think abt this
Long haired snape
I'm talking like lucius malfoy style!!! Maybe he ties his hair with a little ribbon!
In my head Tobias used to insist keeping his hair short but he grew it out after lily died bcs he just didn't have the energy to do anything for awhile much less take care of his hair so he grew it out?
Does he braid it?? Who taught him how to braid? His mom? Lily? Did he teach himself?
Anyway he usually keeps it out of the way when he's alone but maybe he forgot to untie his hair before teaching or something and since then there are students who want braid his hair (imagine like the kids braiding rapunzel hair in tangled vibes 😭)
Hair
Summary: Severus Snape. Long Hair. In Braids. Wearing Glasses. You [Female]. I hope you like it. Teehee💓
——————————— 🪄———————————
His long hair brought a sense of warmth to the cold that often went through the air.
In the past, the energy required to keep appearances was exhausting but must be done. His father threatened to shave his head, should he not cut his hair the appropriate length. His death and his mother’s neglect brought on the freedom to grow it long.
On the first winter of his long hair, at the Three Broomsticks, you couldn’t help but notice that he frequently attempted to tuck his hair behind his ear but remained futile.
His attention on a book of advanced potions when you approached, a friendly smile on your face, and a simple black scrunchie at hand.
“Would you like a tie for your hair?” you asked, his scowl disappeared, lips forming a thin line instead, “I noticed you were having trouble with it. Do you want me to tie it for you?”
Most people didn’t bother but you did. You even offered to tie and teach him. That’s how your relationship began.
It’s been eight years since then, five years married, three years dating.
In front of a mirror, you styled his dark locks, a braided half ponytail, on a silver velvet ribbon. Your cheeks flush at the sight of his serious face, round reading glasses on, as he read a book.
His hair was often in a half ponytail that would suffice until you could fix it. His fingers weren’t as nimble, arms not flexible, or long enough, as yours to do complicated braids. In time, he didn’t mind. Your hair braids becoming an intimate ritual between the two of you and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Your bubbles were popped by the bell, echoing throughout the castle signifying the last five minutes before first period.
“Severus,” you remember, “Aren’t you supposed to be on your way to first period?”
“Oh bloody hell,” he grumbled, standing to kiss your cheek, “Thank you, darling, I must go,”
It was a Friday. His third years has Potions for first period.
To say his snakes and the lions were surprised was an understatement, his entrance followed by the scent of sandalwood, fresh parchment, billowing robes, long braided hair, and round glasses left them speechless.
Who knew he could look so hot?
There were some of his students infatuated from then on. Their gazes clouded, cheeks pink, and giggles soft lest they raise his ire but the desire was there.
“Did you know you made hearts swoon today, Professor?” you teased, at the Great Hall, during dinner, “Several students came to me complimenting your looks,”
“You deserve the praise, you braided it,” he simply answered, the goblet of water on his lips, “Are you jealous?”
“No, is there any reason to be?” you asked, he shakes his head, “Then that’s that. Besides…”
Your left hand makes its’ way underneath the table, gently brushing over his shaft, and taking his left up above to your sight. His wedding ring, usually charmed to be invisible, shines at top of yours in the soft orange hues of the room.
Your engagement and wedding rings were known to the students but his wasn’t though you doubt they noticed it.
“It’s not the only thing you’d forgotten,” you smile, he groaned in realization, “It’s okay. It was bound to happen at some point,”
“Unbelievable,” he sighed.
His younger snakes started to approach and give gifts for him to put on his hair. At first, he declined but couldn’t bear the face when the little one nearly cried at the denial.
Since then, he would put them on and anyone who made a comment on it found themselves deducted of five house points. They tried to convince him to let them braid his hair but he was unyielding.
Only you would braid his hair. That’s sacred between the two of you.

(This is actually a roleplay response but dwbi - all you need to know is that this is Dreamswap with some headcanons/new story elements ekdjdjf)
Dream continued to delve back into memories of his childhood. "We weren't usually allowed out at night by our adoptive mom when we were young. I do remember my brother begging me to sneak out at night to stargaze when we were younger," he chuckled. "We did end up being caught, but I told her I kept him safe."
More old memories, like of when Nightmare accidentally tripped with a bucket of milk when they were seven years old came up. His adoptive mother Faith was concerned about the milk, but Champion - his late best friend and Faith's son, not Dream's current husky pet - helped distract her while he helped patch up Nightmare's scrapped knee.
"Our mom wasn't strict, but she didn't like us getting into trouble. Nightmare never really cared and would get into a lot of trouble, especially when we were teens..." As Dream trailed off, another old memory popped up.
Nightmare had gotten into a lot of trouble. A lot. He had stolen one of Faith's roosters right before they were meant to be slaughtered, and he could hear and see the argument from across the room. Dream was casually playing a game of chess with Champion. These arguments happened often.
A small whimper was heard as a smack ringed into the air. Dream barely looked up to see that, as per usual, Faith had smacked Nightmare, and a little blood clung to where her dull claws probably scraped his cheek as well.
Nightmare had quieted down after that and was promptly told by Faith to go do some chores outside, and Nightmare left with metaphorical tail tucked between his legs.
Champion had glanced over only once during the entire argument. Neither of them were bad kids, and Dream could count on one hand for the both of them all the times they had an argument with their mom, and in all of them they had never got smacked.
Nightmare was just a delinquent that made everyone suffer with his actions. Dream was determined never to follow in his footsteps.
A few hours later, way past dark, Nightmare came back home with his sleeves down. Dream had seen them down more often than usual recently, but chalked it up to it being cool outside.
The candle by the nightstand flickered as Nightmare came over. Dream had been reading a book. "Uhm... Dream..." Nightmare asked as he got into his own bed.
Dream gave a hum in response.
"D'ya ever think maybe that, uh..." Nightmare trailed off for a good minute. "Maybe being smacked isn't a good thing?"
Dream huffed. Nightmare had said this so much they could trade another ten cows. "Of course. It's not meant to," he huffed. "Nightmare, you keep doing things to make her smack you. Champion and I never got hit once by her," Dream lectured without even looking at Nightmare. "Maybe you should stop making her do that, and things will be better for you."
He didn't see the sad, heartbroken reaction Nightmare had. He never got a response from his words - he rarely did - but Nightmare got up and mumbled something about locks and the bathroom, and effectively left their shared bedroom.
(Dream never did know his brother used sharp objects on himself, much less on that same day. Nightmare would have gone to the grave never telling him.)
And within that same month... Dream finally ate the apples.
After recalling those memories, Dream blinked. He'd hadn't really thought about his relationship with Nightmare before he ate the apples in a long time.
Tears began prickling into Dream's eyes. "... I've been a terrible brother, haven't I?"

Birthday // Spencer Reid x Reader
So I got this idea from @darnittumbleweed 's recent post about how grateful Spence must be when he gets gifts and people remember birthdays bc of his mom sadly forgetting them when he was a kid.
Summary - Reader accidentally finds out it's Spencer's birthday and she decides to surprise him with some gifts.
Word count - 2.3k
Tumblr media
I adjusted my light purple blazer, tucking it farther into my pencil skirt as I walked through the doors of the bullpen. I was a bit earlier than usual, but I was not surprised to see Spencer already parked at his desk with a book in hand. His feet were propped up on his desk, making his legs look even longer.
The I saw a wallet laying open on the ground, a few feet from his desk.
I kneeled, grabbing the older looking leather wallet from the carpet. I immediately saw Spencer's ID picture sitting in the front clear pocket.
*Sex: M --- Eyes: BRO --- Hgt.: 6' -01'' --- Wgt.: 175 --- DOB: 10/28/1981*
I furrowed my eyebrows at this, that was today's date. Spencer turns 29 today.
I had heard from JJ how private Spencer was about events like this. They just became like any other day to him as he grew up. His mom had not remembered holidays and birthdays from a pretty young age, so he treated them like another regular day too. JJ, and I'm sure Hotch, were the only ones who knew of his birthday. He must have told them to not make a big deal of it, he wasn't much of a partier. Fine then, I wouldn't throw him a party.
"I think you dropped this." I set his wallet on his desk, folded closed. He peeked over his book, eyes widening a bit.
"Oh thanks! Where did you find it?" He say up straighter, laying his book on his desk. I pointed to the ground a few feet away. "Well, thanks again y/l/n." I nodded, heading to my desk.
I shamelessly spent the whole day looking for things to buy for Reid. I was aiming for things from Doctor Who, so I looked up the stock from geek stores in our mall. I had decided on two gifts, and I was going to buy them after work.
My heels clicked loudly on the tile floor of the mall. I was getting frequent stares from passersby as I walked through the crowded halls. I *did* look a little overdressed to be in the mall, but to be completely honest, I was on a mission. And I wasn't going to waste time changing because that would just postpone the time that I would get to see Spencer's smiling face.
I walked into 'ThinkGeek', peering to the back where I saw a Doctor Who section.
"Hiya! Is there something I can help you with." Though the worker didn't show it *clearly* on her face, but I could see the slight confusion in her eyes. Again, I did look a *little* out of place.
"I'm looking for a few specific things that I checked your guys' stock for with the help of a friend."
"Only workers can check our in store stock here. Are you Sarah's friend?" She gestured to a lady at the counter with bright pink hair.
"Uh, no." I slowly pulled out my FBI credentials and discreetly showed them to her. "I had our tech analyst check for me because I need these gifts for a friend." She nodded in understanding, looking just a bit frightened. I explained to her what I needed and she took me to the items. It wasn't long until I was being rung up.
"That'll be $31.82." I slid her the money. "This is a gift right? Do you want it wrapped? We wrap for an extra 2 bucks."
"That would be awesome!" I put two more dollars on the counter.
"So," she tied the bow on the first present, "is this for a boyfriend?" I blushed and narrowed my eyes a bit. She put her hands up in surrender, "Or girlfriend?" I sighed a bit with a laugh.
"No no, he's a coworker."
"Some coworker he must be if you're spending," she peered at my receipt, "nearly 34 dollars on him. A birthday I'm guessing?"
"Are you trying to profile me?" I asked, quirking my eyebrow.
"Are you trying to profile *me*?"
"Fair enough." I laughed. She slid me the boxes and handed me my receipt. "Thank you for wrapping these."
"Get that man boo!" She shouted as I left the store. I gave her a firm thumbs up and started heading to my car so I could give these to the man in question.
That was until I forgot about a card.
I turned back into the mall and went into Barnes and Noble. I quickly had a worker direct me towards the cards and I found a perfect one with a Tardis that said 'All the time-travel in the world won't make you any younger.'
I giggled and brought it up to the register.
"Is it this special someone's birthday *today*?" I nodded. "Well I have a coupon for a free cupcake from our cafe." She slid me the thin piece of paper.
"Thank you so much!" I grabbed the card and headed to the cafe and getting him a vanilla cupcake. After all of that, I was finally, *actually*, heading to Spencer's.
I pulled into his apartments parking lot, unbuckling and gathering the gifts. I took the stairs up to apartment 23 and knocked on the door. I heard slow footsteps approach the door and stop for a moment. I assumed he was looking through the peep hole so I hid the presents behind me, skillfully stacked onto one hand and waved. He opened the door immediately.
"Hey y/n! What are you doing here? And what's behind your back?" He tried to look over my shoulders, which wasn't hard to do with his towering frame. I backed up into the stairs railing so he couldn't see.
"You promise you won't be mad if I tell you?" I could see worry cross his features.
"That depends. But it's hard to stay mad at you." His face softened.
"Ok well," I pulled the small boxes and card from behind me, "happy birthday."
His eyes widened, and then, unexpectedly, a giant grin spread across his lips.
"How did you know?"
"When I picked your wallet up, I saw your ID. So, I decided to get you a couple things." He ushered me in the house as I handed him the card. He smiled even bigger, reading the card.
"You remembered that I like Doctor Who?"
"Okay, first of all, who doesn't know you like Doctor Who? And two, I remember a lot of things about you, nerd." I elbowed his side lightly. He gestured for me to sit on his couch with him as I handed him the boxes wrapped in white wrapping and blue bows, along with the clear box with the cupcake in it.
"Thank you for the cupcake." He chuckled.
"Yeah! The chick at the counter gave me a coupon for it." I smiled.
He opened the thinner, longer box first. I revealed a Tardis tie.
"Y/n-"
"I didn't think you had a tie like that so as soon as I saw it I knew I had to get it. I'm sorry if you already have one."
"Y/n, this is so cool! Where did you get it?" He pulled it from the box and looked at it closer. He was already loosening his current tie to try it on.
"It's a store in the mall, ThinkGeek. They've got a lot of nerdy stuff there. It's where I get my Harry Potter stuff." I blushed a bit, having just revealed a nerdy part of me that I didn't tell many people about.
"I love it!" He was now standing in front of a mirror, tightening it around his neck and smiling like a little kid who just got a puppy. He came back to the couch, leaving it on and tearing the wrapping on the second one. It was a Tardis mug.
"And you were talking about how we didn't have enough mugs at the office, so I thought you could have your own. Plus, everyone will know it's yours."
He stared into the mug with a look that I couldn't exactly read.
*Did I trigger a bad memory?*
Right as I thought that, he looked up at me with the same expression. All I could tell was, whatever he was trying to express, it was behind those honey brown eyes. ~~the ones I was always getting lost in~~ He set the mug on the coffee table and leaned towards me.
He hugged me.
He hugged me tighter than I have ever been hugged.
I wrapped my arms around him, squeezing him back. I could have sat like that forever, but we sat for probably half a minute.
"I thought you didn't like hugs."
"I don't usually, but, I don't know." He looked down at his hands, quite literally twiddling his thumbs. "This just, means a lot to me. I didn't think someone paid enough attention to me to not only get me things from my favorite show, but things that I have mentioned randomly in a conversation." He looked up in realization, and now my heart was pumping *way* too fast. "You *like* me, don't you?" My eyes widened to, I'm sure, the size of the mug I had gotten him.
"What? Uh, no. I just thought, you just never, no."
"Yes! Yes you do!" He stood up smiling at me, like he just had a *massive* breakthrough. "Look, you're blushing, that's involuntary sign of attraction. And you haven't broken eye contact with me this whole time! Even though you want to. And you're talking in a lower pitch than usual. A person will change the tone and pitch of their voice when speaking to someone they’re attracted to. Specifically, women tend to lower their vocal tone when around an attractive person. You have been fidgeting this whole time."
I could feel my face get hotter and hotter with everything he pointed out. I felt extremely vulnerable. My face was not only involuntarily blushing, it was involuntarily making quite the frightened face. I realized this when he put his hands up in surrender and his face softened from the smug grin that was previously plastered to it.
"Oh! Are you okay?" He leaned over his coffee table at me and I leaned farther into his couch. He smiled again, "Do you not understand what I'm getting at?" He looked at me slightly dumbfounded.
"That I like you? Yeah I got it!" I snapped a bit. He closed his eyes and shook his head slightly.
"I do the exact some things." I squinted my eyes at him. "Do you not notice how *neither* of us ever break eye contact? I was just sitting next to you, fidgeting with my hands. You probably think my cheeks are naturally flushed, but that's just when I'm around you. I constantly catch myself lowering my voice when I'm having conversations with you. Some profilers we are, huh?" I smiled and leaned towards him, grabbing his face.
"Yeah, well, we aren't suppose to profile eachother anyway, cheater." I giggled, pulling him into a kiss. He grabbed the back of my neck deepening it.
"Giggling a lot from a woman is also a sign of attraction." He mumbled between kisses. I pulled apart from him with another giggle. He raised his eyebrows as I confirmed his theory.
"Whatever nerd." I pushed his chest.
"Seriously, thank you so much." He hugged me again. At this point we were both just standing in front of his coffee table. "I'm glad you found out it was my birthday today, because I'm not sure when I would have the courage for any of that again." He pushed a piece of hair behind my ear.
"Well you don't have to worry about that anymore. You have me now." His eyes lit up at that, kissing me again. We both smiled into the kiss, pulling eachother impossibly close. "I've gotta get home and feed my cat." I backed out from the kiss, watching him slightly follow, in hopes of another kiss.
"Are you free after work tomorrow?" He asked hopefully.
"What do you have in mind?"
"Dinner? Or we can watch a movie here?"
"How about both?" I winked.
"Perfect!" He pecked my lips one more time as I walked out the door. Just as it shut behind me I heard a not so quiet.
"Yes! Finally dumbass!" From him.
I giggled again as I walked down the stairs.
*What a convenient day for him to drop his wallett*
BONUS:
The next day I walked in to see Spencer drinking from his new mug and wearing his tie, paired with a regular white button up. I walked by his desk, tapping on the mugs rim.
"Nice mug." I winked and kept walking to my desk. He looked down at the coffee with a giddy smile.
"**I knew it! I knew it! Give me the money JJ you *loser**!" I heard Derek screech from the other side of the room. JJ rolled her eyes and handed him a ten. "My man's has got game!" He slapped a hand on Spencer's back.
"You guys couldn't have waited one more month?" JJ asked with a very annoyed expression.
"It's your guys fault for betting on us." I held my hands in surrender. Penelope then emerged from her office.
"Yay! Finally! Did you get him the tie and mug?! I adore it!" She hugged me from behind and placed a kiss on my cheek.
*This is my family*

Water splashes on the light gray concrete, soaking the people nearby. Meat sizzles on the grill, sending a delectable aroma through the air. Adults and children cover the lawn, chatter fills the surrounding space. The Sun's rays beat upon everything it can reach, making anything hot to the touch. This is what a Fourth of July party looks like. People having fun interacting with each other and forming relationships with people they had just met.
But not me. I've been sitting in the corner underneath an enormous oak tree with my journal full of short stories and other random notes. No one has bothered talking to me. It's not like anyone would want to talk with the girl who has her face buried in a journal. They're too busy enjoying the sun and partying. I'm not a big fan of the sun. Or parties. I'd much rather sit inside and read or write all day.
I turned the page in my notebook and began jotting down random thoughts that pop into my mind. As I looked up to relax my eyes, I noticed a girl my age approaching me in a bright blue two-piece swimsuit with a bright smile on her face. I smiled back and watched as she sat next to me on the grass.
"So, what brings you to this miserable party?" She asked, her smile not fading.
"My parents are friends with the hosts." I deadpanned. "You?"
"My parents are the hosts." She chuckled.
Silence. We stared into the distance and watched my little sister -who's only six years old- jump into the pool with a bright pink ring sitting around her waist as my dad caught her. I smiled when I heard her screams of joy.
"What's your name?" The girl said as she cleared her throat.
"Oh, it's Desiree." I stuttered, clearly being thrown off guard by the sudden question. "What's yours?"
"Zoe." She replied.
More silence. That's enough of our conversation. It's obvious neither of us gets out there or talk to others often. We've only said six things to each other. And every time we try to converse, it always starts with her asking a question.
"Wanna come to the pool with me? I think it's a lot cooler than sitting out in the sun." Zoe comments. "You don't have to if you don't want to."
"Actually, that sounds nice. I'll be right back." I said, standing up as my arms naturally spread to the sky to release tension.
"If you're changing, I could show you where the bathrooms are." She commented.
"That's alright. Your mom told me where they were when we got here." I replied, grabbing my bag and hurrying into the house and towards the bathroom.
Once I was inside, I quickly stripped off my clothing and changed into my black two piece. I turned to look at the mirror and pulled my dark brown hair into a high ponytail to prevent it from getting wet. Smiling, I made my way out of the bathroom and found Zoe standing by the door, waiting for me.
The two of us ran to the pool and dove into the deep end with grins spread across our faces. Fully submerged in the water, I opened my eyes and looked to my right to see Zoe watching me. I smirked and began swimming to the surface. As I broke the fine line between the water and air, I felt my lungs gasp for air and my wet hair stick to the back of my neck. There was no point in that ponytail. I quickly stroked to the edge of the pool where I met with Zoe and got greeted with a splash of water to the face. I let out a dramatic gasp and pushed water towards her as well. Before we knew it, we made our way back out to the middle of the pool again in a huge water war. The two of us looked up to see my dad running towards us from the surface. I took in as much air as possible into my lungs and dove under the water just before he got to the pool. Zoe continued swimming in place and tried to protect herself from the oncoming tidal wave, but it was no use. Dad hit the water, and I felt myself get pushed towards the other side of the pool. As I felt the water calm down, I quickly resurfaced and swallowed a breath of fresh air.
"Dinner's ready, girls." Dad laughed as he swam over to us.
"That wasn't necessary." I said, brushing loose strands of wet hair behind my ears.
"I know. I just wanted to make sure you heard me." He replied as he stepped out of the pool. "I was also extremely hot."
Zoe and I glanced at each other and laughed, making our way out of the water. We hopped in line and draped brightly colored towels around our shoulders to dry off a bit. I grabbed a paper plate and collected a hotdog, some condiments and a small bag of Doritos. I thanked the man standing by the grill for the meal and scanned the yard for Zoe to find her sitting under the tree we met at. Smirking, I rushed to the grass. Standing at her side, I placed my food onto the ground and lay the towel flat next to where Zoe had done the same. I then sat criss-crossed on the fabric and dug into my meal.
"Tell me something about yourself." I prompted, breaking the silence.
"Oh, I uh, I play guitar and bass. I'm planning on trying out for the Jazz Band at my high school at the beginning of the year." She replied simply.
"What school are you going to?" I questioned.
"James Madison. You?" Zoe answered.
"Wait, no way, me too!"
"Really? What classes are you taking?"
I told Zoe almost every single one of my classes. Art, choir, French, and theatre for my electives. Earth science, honors language arts, secondary math one, and world geography for my core classes. Zoe's classes were a lot more complex than mine. Band, creative writing, and debate for her electives. Earth science, honors language arts, secondary math two, and AP human geography for her core classes. Not to mention if she makes it into the jazz band she'll have an extra-curricular.
We talked about our friends and lives in middle school. How I was perfect with grades and had little to no issues while she had to deal with drama and barley passing classes. Why we both made such big changes for high school is a significant question that neither of us know the answer to. The conversation dragged away from school and ventured into our home lives. Zoe told me about her brother Connor, and I told her about my little sister Brooke. She talked about how Connor has changed. How they used to be friends and would play with each other when they were younger and how they've drifted over the years. How much she wishes they could be close again and how it can't happen because of things he's done.
Zoe has dealt with so much shit throughout her life. From fights with her brother to being ignored by her parents, all she wants is to be seen. Usually I'd say the two of us are different people, but in reality, we aren't. After Brooke was born, I felt lost. My life took a sharp turn I didn't see coming. But yet again, doesn't everyone who has younger siblings been through the same thing I went through? I bet it doesn't last as long for them as it did for me. The rejection, I mean. It's been six years. Six damn years and my parents still give Brooke the attention they gave her when she was born. And what have I been doing? I've tried getting them to notice me, but it never works. I learned how to paint and made them something for their anniversary. It ended up in the basement. I drew my dad something for his birthday and it ended up in the basement. I learned how to sculpt things out of clay and made a sculpture for my mom and it ended up in the basement. Everything Brooke makes gets hung up or put on display. Everything I make gets put away. On the outside, we appear as a happy family. On the inside, we appear as a happy family. But it doesn't feel like it.
I finished eating quicker than I had expected and offered to throw Zoe's trash away for her. After many tries, she gave in and let me, telling me to grab her a Dr. Pepper while I was by the drinks. I complied and grabbed myself one.
"Thanks." She said as she popped the tab on the can, sending small droplets of the soda into the air.
"It's no problem." I replied, doing the same.
Everyone at the party had resumed their activities before the meal in no time, which meant Zoe and I had returned to the pool. We were floating on a raft together, chatting about anything that came to mind, when we suddenly felt someone flip the raft, throwing us into the water. I screamed and accidentally swallowed a bit of water. Zoe did the same. We both resurfaced, coughing the liquid out of our lungs while diabolical laughter rang through the air.
"What the hell was that for, Connor?" Zoe yelled, continuing to cough.
"Your screams were hilarious!" He laughed, falling dramatically into the water.
I eventually caught my breath and finally got a glance at what this Connor character looks like. He has pale white skin and unruly dark brown hair. He's incredibly slim with little to no meat on his bones. I brushed loose strands out of my face and tucked them behind my ears. A wave came from behind me, water splashing across Connor's face. I turned to see a wicked grin on Zoe's face. I know exactly what's happening. A water fight. I quickly dove under the water as the fight began, the siblings splashing each other with water. Reaching the concrete wall of the pool, I swung my leg onto the ground and popped myself out. I cautiously ran over to a bucket of water balloons and grabbed one, chucking it at Connor's back. He turned around with a playful glare, paddling himself towards me.
"Shit, shit shit shit shit." I muttered under my breath, grabbing as many balloons as I could, sprinting onto the grass.
I heard Connor leave the water and his wet feet against the concrete. I turned around to see Zoe climbing out of the pool herself, rushing to the pool house. Getting distracted with Zoe's actions, I felt a balloon hit the back of my thigh. My head whipped around to see Connor running in the opposite direction.
Zoe ran up next to me and handed me a super soaker, saying, "Those balloons aren't getting you anywhere."
I gladly took the gun and searched the yard for her brother when I saw an arm disappear behind a bright green bush. Pointing at the bush, we nodded at each other and sneaked up on the boy. I verged left while she went right. Slipping into the groups of people, we approached the bush with smirks on our faces. Zoe held up her fingers, silently counting us down from three. Three, two, one! Both of us blindly fired our super soakers at the bush, hoping we hit Connor. Swifter than we expected, he emerged from the bush and threw his hands into the air in surrender.
"Okay! I surrender!" He yelled.
"We'll forgive you if you get us popsicle." Zoe said, not putting her gun down.
"That's not how surrender works." Connor fought.
I squirted him with water. "Well, it's how it works around here."
"Jesus, fine." he replied, walking over to the cooler with his hands remaining in the air.
"Keep your hands where we can see them." Zoe called out.
"I am." Connor said. He grabbed three rocket pops and headed back over to us. "Have we made peace?"
"Yes." Zoe and I said in unison, each of us taking one popsicle.
As all of us peeled the wrapper off the cool treat, Connor and Zoe's dad approached us. "We're starting fireworks in the front if you'd like to join us."
"We'll be there in a minute." Zoe smiled.
She snatched the wrappers from all our hands and tossed them into the trash. I hurried over to my bag and slipped on my pair of blue shorts, completely disregarding my shirt. No one will care if I'm wearing a swim top and shorts. And besides, it's way too hot. She held out her arm to me to which I took, hooking my arm around hers. For only knowing each other for a few hours, I think we're getting along well. I've never clicked with anyone so easily before so this feels too easy. Maybe Zoe's being forced to hang out with me. It doesn't feel forced, though. Or maybe our personalities function perfectly together. Whatever it is, I don't think it matters. The bond we have is like a friendship that started many years ago. But it's only been hours. And hopefully, it lasts much longer than hours. Maybe we can have what those friendships that last for years have.
Skipping towards the gate that separates the backyard from the front, I grinned and started humming the theme to The Wizard Of Oz to myself. Zoe must have heard me, for she began singing the song. I laughed and sang along as we joined the rest of the party. Glancing around the area, I found an empty spot on the grass. I pulled Zoe to the spot with me and noticed it was right next to my family.
"So that's where you went." My dad commented, throwing a handful of glow sticks at me.
"Did you not just see me chasing Connor around with a squirt gun?" I questioned, taking a seat on the grass, pulling Zoe down with me.
"Apparently not." He replied.
Zoe, Connor, and I each grabbed a handful of the glow sticks off the grass and cracked them in one snap. Light illuminated in our hands and I took one of my red sticks and poked Zoe's shoulder. She poked me back with a blue one. And the war began. We poke each other back and forth with the glow sticks, breaking into a fit of giggles.
"How about you two use the glow sticks for something other than poking each other?" My mom recommended.
"No, I don't think we will." I replied, continuing to poke Zoe.
"Yeah, this is a lot more fun." Zoe added, poking my arm.
After poking each other for way too long, we tired of it and grabbed those plastic connectors and connected the ends of the glow sticks, forming bracelets just in time for the sun to set, putting us into darkness, the glow of streetlights illuminating our surroundings. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a bright white light appear. My head snapped to look at the light to find it was someone handing a sparkler to a small child. I smirked and turned to Zoe to find her looking at me. Her cheeks dusted with a light shade of pink as her gray eyes flickered away from my blue ones.
"Hey, wanna go get some sparklers?" I asked.
"Sure!" She smiled.
We headed over to the table that held all the fireworks and grabbed a few sparklers. A man neither of us knew lit them up for us, and off we went into the middle of the street. We waved the sticks around in the air, creating patterns with the sparks. I tried spelling my name in cursive, but spelling Desiree in cursive isn't the easiest thing, and neither is Zoe. Instead, we drew pictures like hearts, stars, and cats. Yes, we drew cats in the air with sparklers. Why would we not? Is that not something that everyone does? Eventually the flammable portion of the sparkler was no more, and we had to toss them into a bucket of water on the curb.
The rest of the night was full of laughter and pure joy, something I sadly haven't experienced in a long time. Fireworks were exploding around every corner you turned. People were running in the street with explosives in their hands, with no fear in their eyes. Zoe and I quickly tired of the noise and went inside. Zoe dragged me upstairs to her room. And it looks exactly what you'd think it would look like. Periwinkle bedding with pink decorative pillows and a white chunky knit blanket displayed across the foot of the bed. The walls are a lighter shade of blue with pink flowers painted on top. White panels cover the bottom half of the walls, creating a sense of contrast. Above her bed sits a display of all the pictures she's taken with her friends and boy, is there a lot.
"Sorry, it's kind of messy right now." Zoe apologized.
"It's alright. My room is in worse condition right now." I laughed. She laughed too.
She began explaining to me how she discovered her bedroom was the perfect place to view fireworks. By simply flicking off the lights and pulling up beanbags to the window, it gave us a front-row seat to a firework show with no noise. You can see the explosions of bright colors for miles and miles across the city. Some are mere specs of light, while others are large bursts of color that illuminate the room. The sounds of the explosions are small pops, some being more powerful than others. The two of us sat in a comfortable silence for quite a while before a pair of feet came down the hallway and towards the bedroom.
"Des, it's time to go." My mom said, cracking open the door.
I groaned and stood up. "Thanks for making this party a lot more tolerable." Zoe said.
"It's no problem." I replied. "So, maybe I'll see you at school?"
"Yeah, maybe. It was nice meeting you." Zoe stood and followed me out of her room.
"You too." I smiled.
Once downstairs, Zoe joined a group of people in the backyard while I headed out to the front door behind my family. I slid into the backseat and pulled my phone out of my backpack to see multiple texts from my friends. I responded to them one by one and quickly resumed my quiet and reserved personality I had at the beginning of the day. Eventually all my notifications had receded, and it left me staring out the window of the car, watching as buildings and fireworks sped past us in blurs. Suddenly I gained the feeling you get when you think you forget something somewhere, but you don't know what it is. After sitting and thinking about it for a bit, I realized what I had forgotten. I forgot to ask for Zoe's number.

The Corner Store
When Alice Brandon decided to take a job at a nearby gas station, she had no idea she’d be getting to know the love of her life.
Story Under the readmore
also on AO3 and FFN
It was just another day, the first day off Alice had in almost a week. She was sat at home, rereading Les Mis when she was overwhelmed by the sudden craving for some soda and chocolate. Slipping on her ballet flats, she debated a jacket, it was October but relatively warm for the season.
Deciding against it, she peeked her head into her mother’s room. “Hey mom, I’m just headed off to the corner store real quick. "The older woman gave a muffled reply indicating that she’d heard her daughter. Mrs. Brandon had been picking up some extra late shifts lately and consequently had been napping quite often.
Alice was 23, free to come and go as she pleased, but she liked letting her mom know where she was headed, it felt like a sign of respect. Once outside, she decided against the car. The store was only a block and a half away, and Alice always loved a good walk. Especially at this time of year. Autumn was her second favorite season, the way the air smelled, the inexplicable energy everybody seemed to feel. It was peaceful to her.
She made the short trek to the shop, quickly picking out her favorite soda and candy bar combination and adding a bag of chips to save herself a second trip later. Though, everyone knew she’d be back regardless. She’d made frequent trips to this shop daily as far back as she could remember.
From the day her parents had trusted her to make the short journey alone, stopping here had been a part of her daily routine. She knew every cashier by name; a few even had nicknames for her. Of course, she thought, glancing at the woman working the counter, she was sure some of them didn’t even know she existed. Her thoughts drifted to one of the night shift workers, Edward, whom she wished didn't know she existed. She and Edward had graduated together; he’d always been a bit of a moody jerk. She tried to avoid the place when she saw his vehicle outside.
Deciding she was happy with her selection, she approached the counter, waiting patiently for the sole cashier to finish what she’d been doing. Rosalie Hale was the longest-running employee Alice could remember, as much a staple in the store as Alice herself. Finding a stopping-place in her paperwork, the tall blonde stood and came over to help the smaller woman.
Alice had to take a moment to stop and admire the girl. She was roughly five years her senior and was the embodiment of everything Alice aspired to be. Rosalie had a way of commanding all the attention in a room effortlessly, always the epitome of cool and confident. She could be a bitch, but never in a mean way, rather in a way that forced you to respect her. She’d mastered the look of ‘I don’t care.’ in a way that still came off as professional. Every time Alice was in her presence, she was filled with intimidation and admiration.
Rosalie didn’t speak a word as she rung up the items, only opening her mouth to read off the total. She paused for a moment as she bagged up the snacks. "Hey, you’re Alice Brandon, right?"
"Yes,” Alice stated in confusion, wondering what on earth Rosalie could want with her, and shaken that someone so impressive could actually know her name.
“Did you apply for a job here?”
“Oh,” Alice had forgotten about that entirely. It had been about two months ago after an argument with her boss. Tiring of the way she was being treated at the grocery store, she’d applied at the small gas station in an act of defiance. “Yeah, I did.”
“Awesome, Ed just fucking informed me he’ll be leaving us in a week. Couldn’t even give me decent notice, the jackass. Anyway, can you start Thursday?"
Thursday? Alice thought to herself, that was so soon. Besides, she’d smoothed things over at the grocery. She had just picked up a new car payment, though, and it would be nice to have the extra money around to help with that. Making a quick decision, she accepted, "Sure, Thursday sounds great."
"Perfect, you wanna come back at like eight tomorrow so we can take care of the paperwork bullshit?”
“Yeah.” Alice tried not to sound too excited about the opportunity. “I’ll be here, thanks, Rosalie.”
“Sure, whatever.” The girl waved her hand, indicating she was done with the conversation and walked back over to her paperwork. Alice made her way out of the small shop, trying to look cool and calm as she strode through the parking lot. However, as soon as she reached the street and was out of the shop’s view, she took off in a sprint, excited to get home.
Upon reaching her home, she proceeded to bound up the front steps positively beaming. “Cynthia!” She exclaimed, running to her younger sister’s room. “You’ll never believe what’s just happened!”
“What?” The younger girl questioned, looking up from her phone. Cynthia was 15, a freshman in high school, and usually completely absorbed in her phone. She was a beautiful girl, short for her age with luxurious long blonde hair often pulled up into a bun. She set her phone on the bed next to her and turned to look at her sister intently.
“I was just at the corner store, remember how I applied there about a month ago? Rosalie offered me a job!”
“Who’s Rosalie?”
“The really cool pretty blonde who’s always there.” Cynthia simply shrugged, causing Alice to roll her eyes. “The point is, I just got hired!"
"That’s cool, I guess.” The smaller girl picked up her phone, clearly uninterested and done talking.
Alice shook her head lovingly at her sister and went ahead into her own room, collapsing on the bed. Turning her head to stare at her closet, she began contemplating what to wear tomorrow. Deciding she needed some help with such an important decision, she rang up one of her best friends. Of course, Jake didn’t answer, it was typical. Jacob Black was notoriously bad at answering his phone. She sent off a quick text, “Hey Jake, call me back ASAP. I have NEWS!!!!”
Since Jake was a nogo, she tried Bella, who was also no answer. Forgoing the text message knowing her friend would IM her later, she made a final effort and opened Facebook to message Leah.
Leah Clearwater had been working abroad in the UK for the past three years. Calling and texting added up overseas, so the pair had taken to communicating mostly via Facebook. It was only one in the afternoon, making it nine in London; hopefully, that meant Leah was still awake.
“Hey, lovely," Alice typed. "Got some great news.”
Luckily, she didn’t have to wait too long for a response. “Hey, girly!! What’s the news?”
“You know that corner store by my house? Guess who’s now employed there!”
“Really!! Alice, that’s amazing!! I always knew you’d end up working there. They really should give you a plaque on the wall reading 'Customer of the decade’ lmfao.”
“lol”
“Anyway, love, I’ve gotta go. I’m on my way out for a date!!”
“ooooo Good luck. I want details later!!”
“Lolz, Luv ya
Alice locked her phone and set it gently on the table, overflowing with stuffed animals beside her bed. Perching on the edge facing her closet, she stared intently into the abyss of clothing. Alice nodded to herself with determination and tucked her short dark hair behind her ears. She stood and began to look through her dresses, trying to figure out just what she would wear tomorrow.
