Comic based on @magicalgirlmascot's KNPS AU. Starring Nuju, Whenua and the notorious Octopossum.
Loosely inspired by the part in canon where the Toa Metru find all those dead mutant Rahi at the start of the Visorak arc. I felt there was a missed opportunity for a good jump scare there, so I inflict it on their AU counterparts instead.
I am dragging myself kicking and screaming into learning how to draw hands holy hell.
To be continued.... (maybe...)

People talk about Kopaka and Pohatu having a lot of subtext in the books but nobody prepped me for the tension filled, petty bickering to begrudging respect comedic duo that is Nuju and Whenua. What are they doing.

[ID: 3 digital drawings of two older men, Whenua and Nuju. Whenua is shorter with short greying black hair, glasses, and a slim black jacket, while Nuju is taller with long white hair, close-trimmed goatee, and a long white winter coat. In the first, Whenua has one hand on his hip and the other reaching out to tip up under Nuju's chin, with a slightly smug expression, while Nuju looks taken aback and a bit embarrassed. In the second, Nuju grabs Whenua's wrist, frowning, and Whenua looks at Nuju's hand. In the third, Nuju leans in to pin Whenua to the wall by his wrist, and Whenua looks up at him blushing and smiling, surprised but not upset. End ID.]

🗓 Friday, February 14th, 2025
It's Valentine's day! Matau decorates the office for Vakama and Nokama. Onua’s class exchanges Valentines first thing, and Lewa drops by to give him a quick kiss. Tahu is normal about his date with Gali tonight. He overhears a conversation between Kopaka and Pohatu and assumes they're going out, which baffles him. At lunch, Takua pesters Jaller about asking Hahli out, which he continues to not do. Takua hands out Valentines to most of his class, noticing that they're getting sick. Ahkmou sneers at his, but seems genuinely happy when Takua calls him his friend. In the staff room, Kopaka is normal about his outing with Pohatu tonight while the others discuss their Valentine's plans. He still doesn't know what to make of Pohatu’s invitation, and trying to puzzle it out confuses and embarrasses him.
After school, Tahu and Gali pick up groceries. Gali makes Tahu talk about his anxieties over this being their first Valentine's, and reassures him that they don't need the whole pomp and circumstance. Kopaka and Pohatu get drinks from a crowded cafe, and Pohatu briefly holds Kopaka's hand. Lewa and Onua make out a bit before Onua invites Lewa to move in with him. The answer is an enthusiastic yes. Kopaka and Pohatu go for their walk together and have a conversational little chat. Pohatu holds Kopaka's hand again, and Kopaka stops to ask what's going on. Pohatu loses his balance and Kopaka catches him, and Pohatu asks Kopaka if he can kiss him. They go to Kopaka's house to feed Moon and talk. Whenua and Nuju continue their tradition of getting dressed up in their nicest clothes to go out for fast food. At Kopaka's house, Pohatu confesses that he's been in love with Kopaka for a long time and knows that Kopaka feels the same. Kopaka needs time to process this, but readily accepts Pohatu and holds him tight, finally managing to say he loves Pohatu too.

Earth-set modern-day Human AU Whenuju stuff where like Nuju drags Whenua to a couples' stargazing event in the middle of nowhere and for like two hours they're an actual functional couple and then a few months later Whenua drags Nuju to a guest lecture* at a local museum and it happens again.
*hosted by Kodan, who - in this AU - is a famous author, historian and documentarian.

Curse of Whenuju Blorbo
ever have a blorbo live in your brain for so long they become their own blorbo variant that’s no longer fully attached to their source material and your original blorbo is still beloved and dear to you but now you also have a mutant blorbo clone who is dear to you in a different way?

Nuju: Damn Onu-Matorans. Useless archive grave of relics from the past. Horrible stinky rahi. I hate it here. Grr.
Also Nuju, immediately after Whenua goes on off on an excitable Archivist spiel in the depths of said Archives: Aw :)
I am like barely exaggerating
Tumblr media
How else are you supposed to read this other than “Nuju is endeared by Whenua’s bout of wholesome lore dumping” despite being immediately preceded by paragraphs of “we have been arguing non-stop and are fundamentally opposed to each other’s life philosophies. The archive is nothing but a dusty museum and I’m stuck with one of its top archivists. Scowl.”
Interesting.
So you hate the archives and what it stands for along with the people who passionately maintain it but also it’s kind of cute when the other resident nerd on the team pops off about it, huh? Which one is it, Nuju? 🤨

Hell yeah fuckers it's still Valentine's in my time zone so take some KNPS Whenuju for the soul
Summary: After the Visorak were dealt with, Nuju and Whenua had no need to keep living together. And that's fine. Neither of them have strong feelings about that whatsoever. Surely the fact that they're both miserable is unrelated.

🗓 Friday, February 7th, 2025
It's the last PA day before the latest round of report cards are due, and Nokama has brought donuts for the staff room. Pohatu drags Tahu to get some and grabs a date square for Kopaka. Onewa asks Tahu how his apartment hunt is going and Tahu says he's not sure how long he'll have this job so he's hesitant to move to Kini Nui. Vakama explains that KNPS has an exception to the board's seniority list so there can always be Toa there and that he's not losing his job any time soon, so Tahu makes the decision to move. Onua tells Whenua he wants to explore the tunnel system for his mental health and Whenua encourages him to do so. He also gives him some Valentine's advice with Lewa. Onewa worries that Ahkmou is cheating in French class since his test scores are way higher out of the blue. Pohatu has finally put two and two together that Onewa and Krahka are married.
Kopaka has a meeting with Nuju about his students' IEPs, then hesitantly asks him about his early relationship with Whenua. He's confused why Nuju would move into a cave with him when they were the werebeasts. Nuju says he was lonely, and Whenua understood him, made the effort to be with him, whatever he was. Kopaka reflects on the differences and similarities between their situation and his love for Pohatu. Vakama and Nokama are about to go meet Matau for lunch when Axonn calls from the board office. He announces that he's going to be visiting the school in a couple of weeks.

So uh.... In 2015 I started writing for the NSFW OTP 30 Day Challenge with Whenuju from Bionicle.  I then put it down after three prompts, and have since picked it up and started writing prompts again. .___.  I’m posting on AO3, but would anyone be interested in me posting on here too for easier access????
I will not disgrace the bionicle tag by tagging this <___<

Similarities between Sibling and Married Energy
Knowing each other extremely well, to the point of being able to catch each other’s meaning with very few or no words.
Teasing or annoying each other about very specific things ( not always, but happens in a lot of cases)
Brutally honest with each other.
Rarely surprised by each other’s behaviour ( except in an “ I should have known…”) kinda way
Would never allow anyone else to harm the other.
Able to pick up when a subtle change in the other’s behaviour means Something Is Very Wrong
Differences:
Those with Sibling Energy might be actively antagonistic and genuinely try to hurt the other at some point, (or simply not care if they hurt each other) whereas Married characters might say something callous but would instantly regret it
Sibling Energy is more about the shared traits, especially shared flaws, between characters, whereas Married is more about complimentary traits that balance each other.
Married characters will be brutally honest and risk upsetting the other if they feel it’s for their own good. Siblings will do that just because they can.
Sibling Energy characters are far more competitive, whereas Married ones have more of a collaborative mindset (again, not always, see Whenuju).
If they seem older than normal when they’re together, they’re Married. If they act younger than they are when together, they’re Siblings.
Obviously if they’re explicitly written as having a romantic interest in each other, it’s Married, but this is not strictly necessary.
Now, I don’t think all of the above is strictly true of real life siblinghood and marriages, and there are plenty of character dynamics outside of those two types.
When we’re talking about characters who aren’t strictly intended to be seen as romantic but are obviously close, there are some traits that are going to remind us of specific human relationship types, and others are more broad and can be interpreted in a variety of ways, or have a dynamic that changes a lot over time.
So, yeah. Toa Metru are just… Like That.
Which Bionicle characters have the most “We are married” energy between them?
I don’t mean actual relationship status or how many people are involved. I mean, “the way they interact with and talk about each other feels ‘married’ to me. Also, each married is different.” Subjective and self-indulgent takes are welcome.
Starting with Jaller and Takanuva, they definitely feel married. Hahli and Jaller are on their way there, while Hahli and Takanuva are the wild buddies.
Macku and Hewki are much closer to married.
All six of the Toa Metru / Turaga are SO so married to each other while having a huge amount of sibling energy. They basically had to raise the Metru Nui matoran in some measure after their migration and probably did a lot of communally raising them at the beginning while they relied on each other.
Nuju and Whenua specifically have the energy of “we are the couple who constantly bickers with each other to dunk on them. It’s also fun to rile them up and they’re highly competent, so arguments are engaging”.

I need to be stupid about the hair for my humanized bionicle designs hold on
Aside from the fact that these designs usually come to me like visions from some kind of fucked up locust seer guiding my hands with its ceaseless screams, i do put thought in hair surprisingly. Like taipu and hafu having it similar but not identical bc theyre bootleg twins, or wairuha and akamai referencing their components through it.
I especially do this for ensembles. In some cases its sort of cultural/"somatic", a common thing for members of the same species like other things (nose, face shape, lip shape, etc) like the skakdi with these high ponytails to reference their fucked up spines, the av-matoran with the same hair texture and a braided strand, the makuta with patterned buzzcuts, the agori with a tight low ponytail and the skrall with alopecia and markings instead of hair
In other cases its a professional thing, a style that people with a specific job have in common. For example the gukko force has varying combinations of buzzcuts + longer hair + feather/leaf charms, the hagah wear theirs short, the mangai have it bound in some manner, glatorian are all buzzed except for a braid that indicates the tribe they belong to, and order of mata nui members are shaved bald to emulate mata nui (the only exceptions being undercover agent Ancient, not proper member Krakua, built abnormally Umbra, and Helryx, whos the leader and needs all that hair to hide the Secrets in)
But also theres. A bit of. Something. Like storytelling. W the turaga and the toa mata.
Metru Nui matoran tend to keep their hair short and/or bound, as is the tradition in the city bc of all the osha violations that make it very hazardous to have long free hair that can get caught up in shit and yank your head along with it. When our favorite fuckups become turaga, they maintain the constriction but actually grow their hair out longer, sometimes a little more elaborately too. This requires added care, which plays into a community building aspect of their remaining hordika instincts which is communal grooming: animals fuxking LOVE getting their shit scritched and cleaned, and if they live in packs and have the means for it chances are theyll clean one another as a way to establish connection. and wouldnt you know it the turaga have each other and also a wide gaggle of matoran to take care of AND a distinct lack of those terrible terrible hairdresser sinks that make my neck hurt and put me on edge so i never understand how anybody can consider going to the hairdresser just to "get pampered" bc that shit aint relaxing
but anyways yes, communal hair washing and brushing days = good touchy unity time coming to your village FOR FREE with the stuff on your head and the residual lycanthropy animal instincts
Now the toa mata, being mata nuis personal guard, also like the oomn members initially had hair cut like mata nui, which is. Very Very Buzzed. However it had the time to grow to a disgustingly large amount in the 100k years they slept and got all gross while they were decaying in the canisters on account of all the Decaying In The Canisters they were doing against their will, so you need to imagine them crawling out of those things covered in blood pus mucus and god knows what else, wrapped in these masses of matted dirty awful hair, possibly with gaping wounds and exposed bones. Possibly half naked. Hungry and confused and scared and barely coherent. Straight Up Not Having A Good Time. And you need to imagine them shambling to the villages looking like they crawled right out of the worst pits of hell with no comprehension of who they are or what these small guys are. and also theyre all armed to the teeth and capable of incredible elemental damage
And theres a part of the turaga thats shitting their pants very badly for very good reasons, but also theres a monkey-racoon hybrid in their soul that is going to pop a bloodvessel if it doesnt fukcing put its hands in that horrible tangle of keratin and reshape it into something neat and clean RIGHT NOW, so first thing they do after carefully taking these big things in and feeding them and stitching them up is GIVE THEM A BATH
They're very large and dirty from all the rotting so it probably turns into an almost koro-wide event, like this on-the-fly ritual cleansing of sorts, and the turaga take it upon themselves to deal with the biggest chunk of the problem which is that awful terrible fucking hair. And the hair cleaning and combing and cutting and brushing, which the toa mata have literally never experienced before bc they just they didnt fuckin have enough of it for any of that to be done. It does Things to them
You are big and hurt and dangerous. You are falling apart. Your body is clinging to you in a gross and hateful way and it stinks and hurts and impedes your movements and vision. And someone grabs all that and puts warm water on it, and starts working with their fingers to untangle the knots and wash away the grime and grease, and then cuts away the excess so that your head doesn't feel like it's collapsing under the weight of that matted mass, and then brushes it all carefully until it's neat again, and maybe ties a band under it or pulls it into braids and ringlets and dreadlocks and loose tails so it's out of your eyes. If you haven't been lulled to sleep during the process you're crying at least a little bit
The toa mata NEVER change the hairstyles the turaga give them/let them choose. E-VER. the way their hair is done now is Important and Special and Sacred In A Very Personal Way bc its like one of their very first steps towards personhood and finding their place in the world not as tools but as members of a community and theyre NOT going to do it in any other way. maybe theyll let it loose for a while or try braids or smth but then its back to the turaga assigned style bc thats their style now. Forever. Theyre definitely not buzzing it ever again especially post karda nui bc it brings back nasty memories but in general theyre not that big on changing it esp at first. Might change later in time on spherus magna but they just (clenches fist) it means SO MUCH TO THEM
This kind of relationship with hair is Not a matoran universe thing btw. This is yet again a classic case of The Turaga Were Left Unspervised On A Desert Island And Homebrewed A Culture
