As a boyfriend, Jaehyun was… devoted.

It was a mutual decision; a decision he had voiced out first, but later on deeply regrets.

Jung Jaehyun meant well when he had asked to take a break from your relationship because the final months of university was harder than both of you thought. You simply had no time for each other, especially since you come from two very different courses.

It’s been almost 4 years since you two began dating, thanks to that one Gen Ed subject you miraculously shared together during freshman year. If he hadn’t been late and ended up sitting beside you, neither of you would have crossed paths again.

Jaehyun loves you, he was completely smitten that day you had accidentally swung your head to him a little too strongly and caused your hair to whiplash against his face when all he asked was for the professor’s name to put on his forms.

And you love him, ever since he had flashed his signature dimpled smile, chuckling away your apologies for having smacked his face with your hair.

From pair works in class that turned to study sessions at the library, that turned to spending breaks together at the quad, that turned to dinner dates at the nearest pizzeria, and by then all of your friends can tell that you and Jaehyun weren’t just friendly classmates anymore.

As a boyfriend, Jaehyun was… devoted. He doted you; he made sure he showed how much he loves you every second that he can. It was cute at first, until you got used to it. It had never been a bother or a burden, no matter how many times your friends would point out it was starting to be creepy. But you always shrugged them off, saying it’s simply how Jaehyun was.

First week

“You and Jae?” Ten repeats, “Are taking a break from each other?” He scoffs and nudges Doyoung, “Are you hearing this?”

“Wait, I must have something in my ears.” Doyoung sticks a finger into each ear and pretends to clean them, “Okay, can you repeat that again, (Y/N)?”

You roll your eyes at them and Yebin throws her used tissues at the boys, “Ignore them, (Y/N.) But I’m just as surprised as they are. Are you and Jaehyun really taking a break?”

“Taking a break, in our definition, is not expecting dates every other night, texting or calling during breaks, you know, the usual things we do. And if by some miracle, we bump into each other, we’d just, smile, I guess.”

“Oh thank fuck, no more kissing like you haven’t seen each other in years.” Doyoung groans, only to screech when Yebin kicks his shin under the table.

“I bet you won’t last halfway the semester. Give or take a month?” Ten shrugs his shoulders.

Doyoung snorts, “I bet you won’t last a week.”

“It was his idea and we both agreed to it. We’re graduating soon and we both promised to do our absolute best for the last semester, so we’re getting rid of distractions.”

Ten hums, “It’s just unlike him to suggest it.”

You pout at him, “And what is that supposed to mean?”

“He worships the ground you walk on.” Doyoung says in a tone like it was the most obvious thing that existed. “He worships you.”

“He’s just affectionate.” The bell rings, “And we’ll be late for class.” You stand up from your seat and they follow suit.

Third week

It took a while for you to get adjusted to the fact you’re on a break with Jaehyun. There were plenty of times you had to stop yourself from texting him to ask how he was or if he’s up to eat out together. When there was a knock on your apartment door, you had imagined it was him and not the food delivery you forgot about.

One fateful Friday, none of your subjects had given out homeworks to slave on during the weekend and Yebin had demanded for a mandatory and much needed girl’s night out at the new bar outside of campus. You were fine with the idea, until one of your friends, Minkyung, had took it upon herself to dress you up.

“No.” You automatically told her the second her hand reached for the last dress on the rack in your closet. It was probably the shortest dress you had owned. Despite its sweetheart neckline and flowy cloth, the A-line dress was cut off just above your thighs. It wasn’t the best dress to wear on windy days, to say the least. “That’s too short.”

“It’s cute and sexy!”

“But Jae–”

Minkyung cuts you off with a snap, “Last time I checked, you and Jaehyun are currently on break. Let your legs and ass breathe while they can. You’ve kept your best assets in pants or baggy shorts because Jaehyun doesn’t like it when guys ogle them.”

“Uhm, I don’t like being ogled by other guys, too.” You weakly shot back but she had already forced the dress on you and pushed you to the bathroom.

It didn’t take long for the three of you to get ready and hop into a cab that took you to the bar Yebin had not shut up about days prior from tonight. It was the typical bar set up, with booths surrounding the dance floor with 3 bartenders manning the bar and serving up cocktails one after the other.

Minkyung was fast enough to secure a booth for the three of you and you slip inside while Yebin ordered some drinks.

You realize that it’s been a long time since you were able to go out with them like this. You had always spent your free time with Jaehyun and although you missed him, this was a nice change, too.

Halfway through the night and six margaritas and 3 shots of tequila later, Minkyung and Yebin had coaxed you onto the dance floor. Intoxicated, you sway your body to the beat, laughing and singing along with your girls. You abruptly stop when a hand glides down from your waist to your hips.

“Excuse me, but I have a boyfriend.” You slurred a bit, but stood your ground to glare at the boy that felt you up.

“Really? Where is he then? Hm?”

You size him up quickly, he was shorter than Jaehyun but had Johnny’s built.

“It’s called a girl’s night out, jackass, so fuck off.” Yebin pulls you away but he grabs your arm and you cry in pain.

“I wasn’t talking to you, short stuff.” He hisses at Yebin, who responds with a harsh stomp on his foot.

Minkyung and Yebin whisks you away from him while he cusses at her.

“Are you okay? God, some guys are just jerks.” Minkyung snarls, pulling you into a hug.

“I’m fine. I’m sorry for spoiling our night out.” You reassured her.

“You didn’t spoil it, babe. That jackass did. Besides, we’ve had one too many to drink, we should head on home.” Yebin pulls out her phone and books an Uber for the three of you.

Hangovers are the worst. Usually, Jaehyun would have prepared you some painkillers and a decent breakfast, but today, you and your roommates ate cereal in front of the television with the volume down low.

“I feel like shit. Are we too old to enjoy getting wasted already? Shit!” Yebin cries, clutching her head with one hand while jamming a spoonful of soggy cornflakes into her mouth.

“Someone ask somebody to bring us painkillers. My head is killing me.” Minkyung whines, rubbing her temples.

You grab your phone and to text Doyoung, who instantly replied with his dismay of your state but will still bring over some painkillers.

The television suddenly sounds an alarm, making all three of you groan and cover your ears.

“Breaking News from Seoul Central University. Finance student, Kim Iljung, 22, was found beaten up outside a bar on the outskirts of the campus. The victim reported that he was ambushed from behind with a bat and was not able to see his assailant.”

“(Y/N), isn’t that the guy that felt you up?” Minkyung points out and you look at the ID photo the news report flashed.

“Oh shit, yeah. Oh my god.” You gasp as the reporter described the injuries the boy had sustained.

“Kim claims that he does not know who did this and the reason behind it. He is currently recovering in the campus hospital and is working with the campus police to catch his assailant.”

“Serves him right for molesting (Y/N)! Karma’s a bitch.” Yebin says, drinking the leftover milk from her bowl.

“Karma or not, it’s scary. To be randomly assaulted like that? What if one of us were in his place?” You visibly shuddered. “I mean, who could do something like that?”

Ninth week

You’ll be having your period soon.

You know this because on top of craving all sorts of food twentyfour-seven and experiencing drastic mood swings to your friend’s unfortunate luck, you had to deal with a need that Jaehyun knew all too well to handle. But you haven’t contacted him as part of the conditions of taking a break which only meant you had to take care of yourself.

It was half past midnight when you were sure your roommates were in deep sleep in their respective rooms that you decided to lock your room and raise the volume of the music you usually played at night just a tad louder in case you got a little too vocal.

You haven’t touched yourself in a long time. And even if you had, it was under the predatory gaze of your boyfriend.

“Sorry.” He chuckles, lowly, pulling out one of his earbuds from his ear and letting it fall out from the hoodie of his jacket.

“How did you even know I was here?”

“I was out for a jog when I saw you jump the fence.” Once he said that, you noticed he was wearing his usual running clothes. There were a few beads of sweat sliding down his face and his breath was a little ragged. He squats down and offers you a half smile, “If anything, I should be asking you why you’re sneaking into the pool after closing time.”

You bite your lip and swim towards him. “The past weeks have been hard on me and I need to destress. Won’t you help me, Jae?”

His eyes darkened despite the pool lights shining in them. “I don’t think that’s how taking breaks from a relationship works, (Y/N).”

“We’ve made it this far, Jae. Can’t we cheat this break thing?”

“(Y/N)” He warns.

“Please, Jae. For me?” You unconsciously bat your lashes at him and he sighs.

“I don’t have my swimming trunks.”

You giggle at him, “If you haven’t noticed, I’m in my underwear.”

He watches you a little bit more and you thought he was hesitating, so you reach up and unzip his jacket for him. “Do you need help or are you going to let me play by myself?”

That made him smirk and he rises from the ground, discarding his jacket and peeling his shirt away.

Your mouth went dry at the sight of seeing his body again and it made you almost guilty to feel so sexually deprived for the past months. He pushes his running shorts down and reveals his boxers.

Your teeth bite down on your lips again when he kicks his shoes off and smirks at you before diving head first into the water. You swim backwards, trying to tease him as he swims to you from underneath. He resurfaces right in front of you the second your back hits the side of the pool.

Jaehyun wipes away the excess water off his face while you wrap your arms around his shoulders.

“Hi.” You whisper, laughing when he flashes you a smile as you helped pushed his wet hair back.

“Hi.” He breathes, grabbing onto your thighs and guiding your legs around him. “So you needed to destress?”

You nod your head, sliding the hand that pushed his hair back down the side of his face. “How are you gonna help me?”

You flinch when they laugh once more, “Jae, let’s just go.”

He doesn’t react immediately; dark eyes glaring straight to the space behind you. His breathing had slowed and became heavy.

“Jaehyun,” You cup his cheek and make him face you, “Baby, let’s just go.”

It takes him another second to react. He closes his eyes and kisses your forehead. “Okay.”

The guys didn’t pay attention to either of you anymore as they jumped into the far end of the pool. Jaehyun helped you get out of the pool and instinctively, he checked on the guys as he got out after you. Just as he expected, one of them was checking you out while you bent over to grab your things.

“Hey!” He shouts, “I’d appreciate it if you stopped checking my girlfriend out.”

“Can’t help it, man. No wonder you can’t keep your hands off of her.” You see him look at you once more in an overly appreciative manner that made you shudder. On the corner of your eye, you can see Jaehyun tense up and ball his fists. “Jaehyun, leave him alone. It’s not worth our time, come on.”

“Do her real good, man!”

It took all your strength to hold Jaehyun down before he can even properly react. “Baby, please, I just want to go home.” You almost begged him and he finally relented.

Snatching your clothing up, both of you head for the locker rooms to dress before leaving the premises.

“Let me walk you home.” Jaehyun pulled you to his side after seeing you shiver.

After a while, he quietly says, “I’m sorry about those dickheads.”

“It’s not your fault. Maybe it’s the universe saying we shouldn’t be cheating on taking a break.” You huddled closer to him. “But I really miss you, Jae.”

“I miss you, too.” He plants a kiss on the top of your head. “We have a week left. I think we can hold out until then.”

“Until then? Hold out, what exactly?” You tease, spinning on your heels as you arrive to the doorstep of your apartment.

He leans down and kisses the spot between your jaw and your ear. “What could have happened back in the pool and so much more in the privacy of our homes.” His whisper was deep and low, tickling your ear and making you pull away with a short laugh.

“I can’t wait, then.” You let him kiss you on your lips. “Get home safely, okay?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m sorry for not helping you destress.” Jaehyun slightly pouts at you and you smile at him.

You turn around and reach for the door, but realization hits you before you can turn the knob.

Seventeenth week

You were finally through with exams and all you had to do now was wait for graduation. Jaehyun still had one last exam to finish in the afternoon, as Ten told you, so you guys, along with your roommates and Doyoung, decided to go to the mall.

When everyone grew tired of window shopping, Doyoung had suggested to head over to the arcade. Yebin had challenged Ten to breaking the high score on the basketball games while Minkyung had devoted herself into getting the large minnie mouse tsum tsum in the claw machine.

“Let’s play air hockey like old times!” You pulled Doyoung by his arm.

“Right! So I can beat you, like old times.” He laughs and avoids being shoved by you.

“We’ll see about that.”

He swipes the arcade card into the air hockey machine and the puck pops out in front of you. You place the puck onto the table and grip the striker.

“Are you ready to lose?”

“I should be asking you tha–hey! That’s not fair!” He yells when you make your turn and the puck goes straight into the goal.

“Whoops.” You feigned innocence. “If you’re so great, my leading point shouldn’t be a bother.”

Grumbling to himself, Doyoung places the puck back into the table and swings as hard as he could, making it bounce everywhere before you could block it and send it back to him. He had struck it too hard and made it hit the sides that ultimately led it straight into his goal.

“What the hell!” He complains and glares at you as you laughed out loud.

“That’s two points for me!” You cheer, preparing to block his next shot.

As the game continued, you couldn’t help but laugh at all the nonsense complains Doyoung kept stuttering out. Tears even made it to your eyes when he had made an effort to put all his weight into blocking the puck but he had missed it and stumbled away from the table.

“Are you sure you’re as good at this game as you say you are?” You jeered, peeking up at him through your lashes, but your eyes catch sight of someone else. “Jae?”

Doyoung cheers when the puck slips past you while you were distracted.

You eyes flutter down when the puck plops out of the bank by your legs but you ignore it and look back behind Doyoung. Jaehyun wasn’t there anymore.

“What’s wrong?” He stops his mini celebration and turns around, trying to look for what you were staring at.

“I just… I thought I saw Jaehyun.”

He whips his head back at you with a confused expression. “He should be taking an exam right now.” He glances down at his wristwatch. “Well, if he was fast, he could be done, but it would still take him some time to get here.”

“Right. I was just seeing things.”

After a few more minutes at the arcade, you head over to a fastfood chain across the arcade.

“To console you on your loss in our neck-to-neck air hockey match, I’ll buy you ice cream.” Doyoung wraps an arm around your shoulders, “Sound good?”

“Add in some fries and maybe, just maybe, I’ll be okay about losing.”

He exaggerates a sigh, “My best friend, using me for free food.” He lightly pinches your shoulder, “You’re lucky I love you or else–”

It happened so fast that you could barely register it into your mind.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, huh? Keeping her warm for me?”

The voice didn’t register at first, but the face that owned it did.

“Dude, what the hell?!” Doyoung scrambles onto his feet with Ten’s help.

Jaehyun steps forward but you block him. “Jae, what is wrong with you?”

“What is wrong with  me? I finished my exam early and rushed here to see you, but I see him,” He juts his chin towards Doyoung, “With his arm around you.”

“What’s happening here?” A mall security guard approached your group.

“A misunderstanding, nothing we can’t handle ourselves. Sorry for the trouble.” You bow your head at him and grab Jaehyun’s arm. “Can we talk outside?”

He casts a glare at Doyoung before letting you pull him out. On the way to the exit, you recognized the same group of boys that chanced upon you and Jaehyun in the swimming pool from the previous week. You were ready to avoid their gazes, but they had seen you and immediately steered clear from you–and you didn’t fail to notice the fear in their expressions. Glancing up at Jaehyun, you could see the smug look on his face as he watches the group retreat.

You walk out into the parking lot and spin around to face him. “Do you want to explain yourself for what you did back there?”

Jaehyun frowns, “He had his arm around you.”

“I–Jae! He is Doyoung. Kim Doyoung. My best friend since pre-school. My best friend who is asexual. You know that!”

“He can’t be asexual forever. For all we know, he’s already got a crush on you!”

“Why are you being jealous of him? He’s my best friend and will always just be my best friend.”

“He just said he loves you!”

“And I love him back, as in, platonically, which I think is what he meant!” You groan in frustration. “You’re being ridiculous!”

Jaehyun scowls, “I’m being protective of my girlfriend!”

You suck in your lips and stare him down, “Your girlfriend that you’re technically on a break with.”

“What?” His body visibly tensed up.

“Maybe we should extend the break for a week or two.” You began to step back, but he follows you.

“What?” Jaehyun repeats, “Why?”

“Because, Jae,” You snap and he flinches at your tone, “I need time to get over what you just did inside to my best friend and you need time to contemplate over your actions and apologize to Doyoung.”

“(Y/N).” He whines.

“Jaehyun, please.” You cross your arms over your chest, defensively, and he stops in his tracks, looking at you with pleading eyes. You shake your head with regret and turn away, walking to the mall front.

He hadn’t followed you or tried to stop you, and you were thankful for that.

You take out your phone, book and Uber, and sent a text to Yebin, saying you’re heading home to rest, and then sent one to Doyoung, apologizing for Jaehyun’s actions and asked if he was okay.

Yebin replies with a kissy face emoji and a short message that she and Minkyung will bring home some dinner for you, to which you replied with a quick thank you.

Doyoung responds to your text a little while after, telling you that he’s fine; that nothing was broken or bleeding, and Jaehyun came back to check up on him and to apologize for punching him.

You close your phone as you see your Uber arriving and hop inside. Jaehyun had never reacted that way and it came as shock to you that he did. He was always that shy and nice kid that everyone was friends with. He was never assertive, but you knew it irked him when guys would so much give you excessive attention.

Seventeen weeks and three days

With classes over and practices for graduation rites starting in two weeks, you were left bored at home while Yebin and Minkyung had their exhibits and recitals to attend to. You woke up at noon and ate late lunch in front of the television, catching up on all the dramas you’ve missed for the sake of studying.

It pained you to watch some romantic scenes, if you were to be honest with yourself. It reminded you of Jaehyun and how he had acted a few days ago.

You learned from Ten, since he’s been seeing Jaehyun’s roommate, Johnny, that Jaehyun was either cooped up in his room or spending his hours at the gym.

The news didn’t make you feel any different. You missed him so much, but your pride wouldn’t allow you to give in. He had to apologize and admit his mistakes.

You fell asleep in the middle of a drama and was woken up by your cellphone ringing. The caller ID read Unknown, but you answer it either way.

“Hello?” You yawned. The other line was silent. Thinking there was a problem with the signal, you stand up and walk closer to the window. “Hello?” You repeat. “Who is this?”

As the line continued to remain silent, you decided to hang up.

The call was unsettling, but you shake it off and gasp to see that it was half past 8 already. You trudged to the kitchen, taking out some left overs from the fridge and pop it into the microwave. While waiting for it to heat up, you scroll through your SNS; liking pictures, watching random videos. You see Taeyong’s new profile pic that showed his newly bleached hair and you give it a heart eyes emoji react.

The microwave beeps and you close your phone to eat your dinner in silence.

As you cleaned up after your meal, you’re overcome with the sense of someone watching you. There was a palpable tension in the air and you convince yourself to look behind you. You regret not turning the lights on in the living room, leaving the open space dark and barely illuminated by the kitchen lights.

Your imagination went haywire, thinking how possible it was for someone to stand in the darkest corner and possibly staring you down, mocking how you can’t see them. But your eyes adjust to the darkness and you can map out the tall lamp shade Yebin’s mother had gifted you guys the day you moved in.

You let out an awkward, shaky laugh. “It’s all in your mind, (Y/N).”

Your phone rings, ripping through the silence and effectively made the tiny hairs all over your body stand up. “Motherfuck.” You hiss, clutching your heart as you take your phone from the counter.

It was an unknown number again.

“Hello?” You answer, a little too aggravated.

There was static on the other side and thinking the cell service was bad from the kitchen, you move to window and peek up into the cloudy sky. “Hello? This better not be a prank phone call.”

Instead of the silence you expected, you hear slow, heavy breathing.

“Hello? Who is this?” The clouds move and the moon shines the ground below. Your eyes drop to the street below and your chest tightens.

On the sidewalk that leads to your apartment building, there was a man dressed in a black hoodie, ripped jeans, and a black face mask covering half his face. He was looking up at your building, you weren’t so sure since his hoodie had casted a shadow over his eyes. But what caught your attention was his hand, holding up a phone to his ear.

July will be an election desert, so let’s enjoy the primaries while they last, shall we? This Tuesday, five states — Colorado, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma and Utah — are holding primary elections,1 while two more (Mississippi and South Carolina) are holding runoffs to decide primaries held earlier this month. Here are the four big questions we’re hoping those primaries answer (don’t forget to tune into our live blog on Tuesday night for full coverage of everything else on the ballot as well):

1. Does a Trump endorsement pack any punch against a Trump-like candidate?

On a few occasions this election cycle, President Trump has opposed the most Trump-like candidate in GOP primaries in the name of advancing a Republican candidate who seems better-equipped to win the general election. It happened in Alabama when Trump endorsed Luther Strange against Roy Moore, and it happened in West Virginia when he anti-endorsed Don Blankenship. So far, Trump’s record in these bouts has been mixed (Strange lost, but so did Blankenship). Two primaries this week will be good tests of how much the president’s endorsement really matters — or whether anti-establishment Republicans see through it.

In New York’s 11th Congressional District, which is based on Staten Island, Trump is backing the current member of Congress, Republican Dan Donovan. He won a 2015 special election after the previous occupant of the seat, Republican Michael Grimm, pleaded guilty to tax evasion and resigned. Now, after seven months in federal prison, Grimm is gunning for his old job, and he cuts a much more Trumpian figure than Donovan. Grimm, like Trump, has threatened the press and claimed to be the victim of a “witch hunt.” Also, former Trump staffers, such as Steve Bannon and Anthony Scaramucci, have endorsed him.

At first glance, Grimm looks like a long shot: Donovan has far more campaign cash, and the resources of the national party are behind him. But on Staten Island, that may not be an asset. Physically and demographically separate from the rest of New York City, the “forgotten borough” has developed a uniquely resentful, populist conservative political identity that made it fertile ground for Trump. He won the 11th District by 10 percentage points four years after Barack Obama carried it by 4. And Grimm still has plenty of loyal fans who fondly recall his attentiveness to constituents, especially after Superstorm Sandy hit the region in 2012. A Siena College poll conducted between May 29 and June 3 found Grimm leading Donovan 47 percent to 37 percent, but Trump may have rendered that datapoint obsolete by tweeting his endorsement of Donovan while the poll was still in the field. A more recent poll, taken June 20-21, gave Donovan a 7-point lead, but — internal poll siren! — the pollster is owned by a consulting firm that is working for Donovan.

The 11th District is 9 percentage points more Republican-leaning than the country at large,2 but the nastiness of the primary could provide a general-election opening for well-funded Army veteran Max Rose, the likely Democratic nominee. A win by Grimm, with his criminal past and scorched-earth campaigning, could drive many Donovan supporters into the arms of the Democrats in November.3 Grimm is also campaigning as a write-in candidate in the New York Conservative Party primary (also this Tuesday); if he wins their nomination, he’ll have a ballot spot in November and the option to continue on with his campaign. A three-way race in November could split the conservative vote and hand Democrats the seat.

The stakes aren’t as high in the Republican runoff for South Carolina governor (the Palmetto State has a safely red R+16 partisan lean), but Trump’s power to persuade is arguably even more on the line. On Monday, the night before the election, Trump popped down to Columbia to hold a rally for Gov. Henry McMaster, a longtime Trump supporter. However, McMaster’s opponent, John Warren, is running as a swamp-draining outsider at a time when an illegal lobbying and influence-peddling investigation focused on a prominent South Carolina political consultant has touched McMaster’s inner circle. Warren has also won the endorsements of the third- and fourth-place finishers from the first round of voting. Unlike in New York, however, the Trump-like businessman appears to be the underdog: In a Trafalgar Group survey conducted this month, McMaster led Warren 60 percent to 31 percent.

2. Can progressive Democrats notch another win against the national party?

Despite a high-profile brouhaha in Texas and one notable exception, the national Democratic establishment has generally done quite well in primaries so far this year. Three races on Tuesday will put that record to the test.

Colorado’s 6th Congressional District (a D+5 partisan lean) and its Republican incumbent, Mike Coffman, have for years been a target of Democrats, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee decided early on that former Army Ranger and Bronze Star winner Jason Crow was its man. That apparently didn’t sit well with former Energy Department adviser Levi Tillemann, who is running against Crow. Tillemann proved his anti-establishment bona fides by secretly recording a conversation he had with House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer in which Hoyer urged him to drop out. Although Crow is a mainstream liberal on the issues, he has not taken up the mantle of either single-payer health care or pushing for Trump’s impeachment, both of which Tillemann supports. Crow has dominated the money race with $1.6 million raised, but Tillemann has kept his name in the spotlight with stunts like getting pepper-sprayed in a campaign ad.

Meanwhile, former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner left the DCCC holding the bag in January when she decided not to run for Congress in New York’s 24th District (D+4). Local Democratic committees consolidated around Syracuse University professor Dana Balter as their candidate to take on Republican U.S. Rep. John Katko, but national Democrats were unsatisfied. Lo and behold, in April, a new candidate, Juanita Perez Williams, unexpectedly jumped into the race, prompting the local parties to denounce the DCCC’s “D.C. meddling.” But Perez Williams may not be the improvement on Balter that national Democrats had hoped. Perez Williams, who somewhat surprisingly lost the 2017 race for Syracuse mayor, failed to top even Balter’s paltry fundraising totals in the most recent period, and she has been attacked for participating in an anti-abortion march two years ago and writing pro-life Facebook posts in 2016.4 Balter, meanwhile, is favored by the progressive wing of the party.

Finally, in the Democratic primary for Maryland governor, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker has the support of a litany of big names in Maryland Democratic politics but hasn’t raised a ton of money and isn’t the most engaging campaigner. Meanwhile, former NAACP President Ben Jealous’s support for free college tuition, single-payer health care and legalized marijuana in Maryland (all unlike Baker) has earned him the endorsement of Bernie Sanders and nearly $1 million in air and ground support from progressive outside groups. Even though Maryland is heavily blue (D+24), polling suggests that Baker and Jealous would be equivalent underdogs to popular Republican Gov. Larry Hogan. Hogan enjoys a 57 percent approval rating … among registered Democrats.

Going into Tuesday night, our best guess is that two of the three establishment-flavored candidates will prevail. In Colorado, Crow is seen as a heavy favorite, and in New York, a Siena College poll taken earlier this month gave Perez Williams a 13-point lead over Balter. The progressive wing’s best shot at a win is probably in Maryland, where the two most recent polls of the primary have Jealous either tied with Baker or slightly ahead.

3. Can the Year of the Woman overcome even a multimillion-dollar juggernaut?

Women have been doing extraordinarily well in Democratic primaries in 2018, which hasn’t always been the case in the past. By contrast, wealthy businessmen spending millions of their own dollars to help them win elected office crop up almost every election cycle. What happens when these two recipes for success collide? Three races on Tuesday will give us our answer.

Even before the primary, 2018 has already broken the record for the most expensive gubernatorial election in Colorado (D+2) history. Emily’s List, a pro-choice women’s group that has helped many of the female candidates who’ve won 2018 primaries, has endorsed former state Treasurer Cary Kennedy in the Democratic primary. Kennedy’s campaign and the super PACs that are loyal to her have combined to raise nearly $4 million. However, that’s chump change compared to U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, the second-wealthiest member of Congress, who has poured $11.3 million of his own money into his campaign. And a super PAC supporting the second man in the race, former state Sen. Mike Johnston, has raised $5.7 million, including $2 million from former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The second woman in the race, Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne, is trailing so badly in fundraising that she has had to resort to attention-grabbing ads like one in which she gets a tattoo of her campaign slogan. According to a Strategies 360 poll conducted from May 23 to June 6, Polis led the primary with 34 percent, followed by Kennedy with 23 percent, Johnston with 12 percent and Lynne with 2 percent.

Likewise, the Democratic primary in New York’s 1st Congressional District may come down to wealthy real-estate investor Perry Gershon and former Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning. Of the $2.1 million Gershon’s campaign has raised so far this cycle, $1.3 million was loaned or donated by the candidate himself; Browning has pulled in $494,000 total. Both argue they would be strong candidates in November against Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin in this R+12 seat: Gershon with his access to cash, Browning with a blue-collar appeal5 that she says helped her win her conservative legislative district by wide margins six times.

And the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District (D+12) has been fought not over issues, but identity. David Trone, the owner of the Total Wine & More liquor store chain, has contributed more than $10 million to his own campaign, more than any U.S. House candidate in history save one — himself, two years ago. Trone argues that Congress needs more “disrupters” like him who have an easier time ignoring the desires of big-time donors like PACs and lobbyists, but state Delegate Aruna Miller thinks diversity is the more important factor in the race. Miller, who didn’t speak English when she immigrated from India at age 7, would become the only woman in Maryland’s congressional delegation. She has the support of Emily’s List and, at $1.4 million, enough fundraising to lead the money race in most any other district.

4. Will incumbent Democrats get a scare?

Despite early signs that Democrats might get their own version of the tea party, no Democratic members of Congress have lost primaries yet this cycle. That probably won’t change in one of these races, but a trio of long-serving Democratic members of Congress are facing genuine challenges. In Colorado’s 1st District (D+42), vocal progressive Saira Rao wants to become the first woman of color elected to Congress from Colorado. Rao’s fundraising levels have been competitive with those of incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette.

Likewise, progressive activist Suraj Patel has pulled in more than $500,000 in each of the last two quarters in New York’s 12th District (D+64), besting incumbent Rep. Carolyn Maloney. Maloney has courted controversy over the years, including by making comments in 2012 wondering if vaccines cause autism and by dismissing Patel’s donor list as containing “a huge amount of the name Patel.” Maloney has pilloried Patel for being a transplant from Indiana and for being linked to reported labor-law violations through his family business; the sharp attacks may imply that the race is closer than people assume.

And in New York’s 14th District (D+56), former Sanders campaign organizer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has an uphill climb against moderate Rep. Joe Crowley, the head of the Queens Democratic Party, No. 4 Democrat in the U.S. House and potential future candidate for speaker. Ocasio-Cortez is 28 years old, of Puerto Rican descent and an avid progressive; Crowley is 56, of Irish descent and has raised 10 times as much as his opponent.

Maryland’s U.S. Senate (D+24) race might even have turned this trio into a quartet if things had unfolded a little differently. Incumbent Ben Cardin is as safe as safe can be, but all eyes will be on how many votes transgender activist and convicted leaker of classified material Chelsea Manning garners in her Democratic primary challenge. By any normal measure (e.g., raising $81,000 for a statewide campaign), she is not running a serious race.

Junkrat/Roadhog: Voyages Ch 3

With his treasure at the heart of their grandiose plans, they take their adventures overseas and leave their mark on the world, for better or worse. (Mostly for worse. They’re criminals.) Plush toys and soft drinks aside, Japan wasn’t all fun and games. The neon lights of Tokyo were less pretty and more harsh and unforgiving when you were bleeding beneath them. Their bravado always caught up to them eventually, and their attempt to swindle a man fell short when he pulled a knife on them. Roadhog promptly punched him in the face, but not before the perpetrator got a swipe in and sliced Junkrat's arm.

There was a sickening crunch as brass rings met bone, and their attacker spat out a mouthful of blood and teeth. Horrified, he turned tail and fled. Roadhog wiped his knuckles on his overalls. “Everyone has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth,” he muttered to himself.

“If yer finished, I could use a little help here, big guy!” Junkrat said through grit teeth, clutching his arm. It was only then that Roadhog noticed the blood seeping between his fingers.

“Let me see,” he said gruffly as he pulled Junkrat’s hand aside. It looked worse than it was -- it was relatively shallow, but the knife had nicked a vein, and the copious amount of blood that was oozing out of the cut refused to be staunched.

“You'll live,” Roadhog told him. He undid the bindings around his wrist and wrapped the strip of cloth around Junkrat's arm, just to stem the flow until they could retrieve some proper bandages. “Can you walk?” he asked.

“Yeah, ‘course, m’fine,” Junkrat automatically answered. It was sheer reflex -- he was used to bluffing his way through minor injuries. You wouldn’t last long in Junkertown if you couldn’t stand some pain. Junkers were jackals. They'd leap on you at the first sign of weakness and eat you alive.

The implications of Roadhog’s question caught up to him seconds after the words left his mouth, and he hastily amended, “But, ah, if yer offerin’ to carry me...” He raised his eyebrows and grinned.

“You said you can walk,” Roadhog replied and set off down the street in the direction of their makeshift home.

Junkrat frowned and jogged after him. “Wait, no -- carry me, ‘Hog!” he demanded. He tried to hop onto Roadhog’s back, only to yelp in pain the moment he stretched his wounded arm up.

At the small noise of distress, Roadhog glanced back at him in alarm. Finding that Junkrat wasn’t dying, he heaved a world-weary sigh and crouched down.

“Thank you!” Junkrat said cheerily. He scrabbled onto Roadhog's back, hooking his good arm around his neck and letting the bloody one dangle uselessly. “Onward, my noble steed!”

“I will drop you.”

Junkrat was fairly sure he would have already done so if it weren't for his injury. He snickered and rested his chin on Roadhog's head, the tuft of his ponytail tickling his neck.

Roadhog unceremoniously dumped Junkrat on his ass after they snuck back into the construction zone. The rudeness of the gesture was offset by the tenderness with which he unwound the cloth he had tied around Junkrat's arm. It was the story of their relationship -- they were comfortable showing one another how much they cared, but underneath it all, they were both assholes. It was why they worked well together: they were jerks with little regard for the lives of anyone but themselves -- and, as of late, each other.

Roadhog rummaged around in their loot bag, a battered, pig-faced pink duffel bag. They had recently dipped into their first aid kit, a bag filled with medical supplies that Ava had gifted them, but it was anyone's guess where they had left it.

“I need a bandage--” A small metallic hand with spindly wire fingers handed him the box of bandages. “Thanks,” Roadhog automatically said. He was halfway through bandaging Junkrat’s arm when he froze. Junkrat's brain hadn't immediately processed that Roadhog's 'thank you' had been directed at a third party, and it took a split second longer for the oddity of the situation to strike him. They both turned their heads to look at the infiltrator.

“What,” Junkrat said, “is that.” He had seen -- hell, he had built -- his fair share of perplexing devices during his life at Junkertown. He had never seen anything quite like this. Before them was a pale yellow robot, the smallest one that either of them had ever seen. It stood at about a foot high and was all smooth curves, with rounded paws and cat ears. Junkrat would have taken it to be a child’s toy if it hadn’t been for the upper paws, which were cracked open to reveal two extended metallic limbs, and the digital screen on the front of its head. A cutesy, happy cat face was displayed on the screen, one of the kaomoji they’d gotten used to seeing on merchandise around Tokyo. It trilled happily.

“I think it’s a robot,” Roadhog said. He finished bandaging Junkrat’s arm and sat back to look at it.

Junkrat snorted. “That’s bloody obvious. Is it an omnic, though?” He reached for his frag launcher. It didn’t look like it could do much damage, but just in case. Omnics put him on edge.

Roadhog gave a noncommittal hum and picked up the robot to study it. With a whirr, it retracted its spindly arms into its body, the paws snapping shut around them like two egg-shaped capsules.

“It don’t look like no omnic I’ve ever seen,” Junkrat said. The omnics he was familiar with were all humanoid, asides from the war machines that were used during the Omnic Crisis. It didn’t look like it was capable of free will, so perhaps his misgivings were just that: sheer paranoia. “Does it know what we’re talkin’ about?” he asked after a moment’s pause.

The display screen flickered, replacing the cat face with the letters N-O. Junkrat recoiled. “No?” He squinted at it suspiciously. “What are you?”

It was a rhetorical question, but after a beat or two, the robot’s screen changed to display the letters IDK.

“Id-kuh,” Junkrat read. “The hell does that mean?”

“‘I don’t know,’” Roadhog said.

“I don’t know either! Is it makin’ fun of us? We should blow it up.”

“No, it’s saying, ‘I don’t know,’” Roadhog explained. “It’s an acronym.”

“Oh.” Junkrat scratched his head. “That’s a puzzler. It don’t know what it is, then?” Roadhog shrugged. “Ya don’t know what you are. Yes or no?” He directed the question to the robot.

The screen changed again: Yes.

“Well, that answers that,” Junkrat said, satisfied. “The thing can’t be an omnic, then, it got no proper self-awareness.”

“It doesn’t pass the Rensselaer Test,” Roadhog mused.

“What? No, it doesn’t pass the Junkrat test.” The robot’s face flickered back to its normal, happy cat face. Junkrat tapped his chin as he looked down at it. “I guess it is kinda cute. These people really like their robots, don’t they? Least they’re going with the good kinda bots and not harbouring too many bloody omnics.” He picked up a crushed soft drink can and tossed it across the room. “Go get that for me, bot.”

The robot obliged with a beep of agreement. Junkrat clapped his hands in delight. “It takes orders! Roadhog, mate, we got us a robot sidekick!”

Later that night, in the witching hour, Junkrat sat bolt upright. “Kiki!” he all but shouted, startling Roadhog out of his sleep and causing him to lunge for his scrap gun.

When he realised that there was no danger, asides from the threat that Junkrat posed to his beauty sleep, Roadhog put down the weapon. “What,” he said, voice still heavy with sleep and more than a little vexed.

“The soft drink machine!” Junkrat told him, entirely oblivious to his partner’s displeasure. “That’s what it looks like. The bot, I mean. Looks like the mascot on that vending machine. Kiki Cola.”

“Great,” Roadhog said, the word dripping with sarcasm.

“It is great!” Junkrat enthused. “That was botherin’ me. Knew it looked familiar, just couldn’t place it.” Junkrat knocked on his own skull. He could admit that his mind was a sieve.

“Have you been awake this whole time, thinking about this?”

“Kinda,” Junkrat confessed. “Well, y’know. And other things.”

Roadhog grunted and rolled over onto his side, facing away from Junkrat. “Go the fuck to sleep.”

Junkrat did his best to lay perfectly still and quiet his mind, but it was still racing a mile a minute. He sat up and peeked over Roadhog’s massive form to peer at his face. “What’s that Nano guy?” Roadhog had enough sense not to engage this time, but that didn’t stop Junkrat from continuing his train of thought. “Y’know, that other mascot on the machines? The Nano soft drink, or whatever? Little yellow bastard--”

Roadhog rolled back over and clamped a hand over Junkrat’s mouth. “Shut. Up. And sleep.”

Voice too muffled to verbally reply, Junkrat nodded, wide-eyed. Roadhog let go of him and turned back around. He opened his mouth to say something further, an apology, probably, but for once, he thought better of it. It was hard for him to fully restrain himself once the words were on his tongue, however, so he mouthed a near silent “sorry.” Roadhog twitched ever so slightly.

It took him several more hours until he finally passed out. All his thoughts about cartoon soft drink mascots were replaced by thoughts of Roadhog: his palm silencing him, thick fingers working inside his mouth, hands wandering down the rest of his body.

He shivered in delight.

Adopting Kiki into their fold turned out to be one of their better ideas. A subservient robot was an excellent asset in committing petty theft. They decided to test its skills with a simple heist, nothing flashy, just stealing items from a small corner store and attempting to be unobtrusive.

“Hang on,” Junkrat said, lowering the binoculars he had been using to scope out the shop. “Does it know about the fine pastime of shoplifting? Do we gotta teach it? It’s a robot, it’s stupid. Only knows what it’s told, roight?”

Roadhog shrugged, hands spread in the universal gesture for beats me.

Junkrat crouched down so he could address the robot. “Okay, then. Let’s see if yer worth keepin’ around,” he said. “Wanna steal somethin’ for us?” He considered his own words and laughed. “Don't know why I'm askin’. Not like ya have much of a choice, dontcha?” Junkrat was operating under a very narrow view of what he believed Kiki to be: an artificially intelligent but non-sentient robot -- but his first impression had yet to be proven wrong, so he figured he was onto something. “Steal somethin’ for us, and I won't scrap ya. Got it?”

Kiki gave a mechanical trill, its screen flashing the letters Y-E-S.

They sauntered into the store like they owned the place. Junkrat was immediately disturbed by the prompt greeting, the cashier beaming at them the minute they stepped inside. He was not used to people -- namely, potential victims -- being so jolly towards the two of them. They looked like they were from the wrong side of the tracks: Roadhog with his mask hiding his face from view, Junkrat with his usual manic grin, the both of them shirtless, with a spiked tire and a machete strapped to their backs. Really, it was a wonder they didn't get the police called on them more often than they did. "I'm... not gonna talk to you," was the first and only thing he could think of to say. "Leave me alone, I got this."

He headed straight for the wall of coolers. He had emptied his usual harness before they left for the mission, giving him room to insert soft drink cans in the spaces where he slotted his pipe bomb canisters. He whistled a jaunty tune as he gathered up an armful of cans: fizzy drinks, energy drinks, miscellaneous beverages, as much as he could carry. He hefted the lot of them and shielded himself from view of the cashier, inching his way behind a rack of stationary and greeting cards. The cashier was occupied, cooing over Kiki (I knew we made the right decision, keepin' it around, he thought to himself, as if he hadn't spent the past half hour speculating on the robot's usefulness). He took his time deciding which of the drinks to store in his harness -- but not too long, they were operating on a time limit, after all. Any duplicates that he had, he rolled down the aisle away from him. "Roadhog, mate, I just got a brill idea!" he stage whispered.

Roadhog, who had been busy stuffing snacks everywhere (in their duffel bag, his pockets, down his pants), wandered over to him, a cellophane-wrapped pastry in hand. "Try me," he said. He made no attempt to hide his belief that not all of Junkrat's ideas were brilliant.

Junkrat spread his hands in front of him. "Picture, for a moment, if you will..." He waited for Roadhog to respond.

"What am I picturi--?"

"Bowling!" Junkrat interrupted him before he could finish the question, filling his enthusiastic exclamation with all the drama he could muster.

"Bowling," Roadhog repeated.

"With soft drink cans!" Junkrat rolled another can down the aisle. "Empty ones for pins, full ones for bowling balls. See? Genius!"

"Not the word I would use, but okay."

Junkrat scoffed. He popped open the tab of one of the cans that he had been contemplating. It was bright green with flowers on it, its label indecipherable to him. "Maybe ya just don't get it.”

“I get it. It’s stupid.”

“You'll learn to appreciate my genius someday."

Roadhog gave a skeptic hum. “Rockmelons, maybe,” he said after a moment's silence.

Junkrat whipped his head around to fix him with a grin of utter adoration. He loved it when Roadhog humoured his sillier ideas. “Even better!”

He tossed his head back and downed a gulp of the mystery liquid, his pinky extended regally. He promptly spat it back out and looked at the can as if it had wronged him. "What the hell is this swill?" he said, aghast.

Roadhog took the can from him and connected his mask’s drinking apparatus so that he could taste it himself. “Green tea,” he said, handing it back to Junkrat. “Bitter, though. It's unsweetened.”

Junkrat scoffed. “Bitter! Yeah, that’s a word for it, alright.” He held the can at arm’s length, dangling it between his index finger and his thumb. “I didn’t pay good money for this shit!”

“You didn’t pay.”

“Yeah, that’s what I said!” Junkrat cackled at his own little joke. He handed the drink to Kiki. “Go take care of this, wouldja? Throw it at the son-of-a-bitch who put this in his vending machine.”

Kiki obliged. For a robot with such spindly arms, she could launch a half-full can a surprising distance. The cashier yelped, whipping his head around to find the source of the projectile. His eyes landed on Junkrat, who was pointing and laughing uproariously at him.

“Time to go,” Roadhog said, scooping Kiki up in one hand and grabbing the chain of Junkrat’s tire with the other.

“Oh, c’mon, the fun’s just startin’!” Junkrat protested. Kiki beeped in agreement.

Once they made it safely back to their hideout, they wasted no time in unpacking their haul. "Tonight, we feast like kings!" Junkrat said, rubbing his hands together. He turned to the robot. "Okay, pay up," he said. "Whatcha get? If it's rubbish, I'm tossin' you out."

Kiki's paws and the panel of its belly slid open, one of the mechanical limbs extending to retrieve the prize from its inner workings. It handed a wafer thin, plastic wrapped package to Junkrat.

"What, paper?" Junkrat said, fully prepared to rip it in half. He flipped it over, and his snide insults died on his lips. "What're these, then?" he asked. The page was covered with cutesy images, ranging from glittery stars and hearts to stylised animals and anthropomorphised food: winking hamburgers and french fries, blushing bottles of milk, and smiling ice cream cones. Junkrat used his nail to slice open the package. He could only see the top sheet, but as it was several layers thick, he assumed there were more treasures beneath.

He was not disappointed. “I love it!” he announced, holding the stickers up to show Roadhog. “Okay, y’ve earned yer keep,” he told Kiki. "You can stay."

"Let me see," Roadhog said, reaching for the stickers.

Junkrat snatched them away from him, nearly toppling onto his side in his haste. "No! They're mine, she got them for me!" He spread them out and looked down at them fondly. "And I'm gonna save 'em for somethin' special, mind you. Can't exactly peel 'em up after ya put them down, can ya? I mean, ya can, but then they're useless. Nah, I gotta find the roight surface for these!"

Later that night, after they had eaten, Junkrat examined the stickers again and decided to put one on Roadhog. He meant for it to be a joke, but Roadhog mistook his leaning over as him going in for a hug and pulled him onto his lap.

A small noise of surprise slipped out, and Junkrat laughed. He stuck the sticker to Roadhog’s pants.

Roadhog huffed in amusement. “Cute,” he said. Junkrat wasn’t sure whether he was talking about the sticker itself -- a glittery, pink cat’s head -- or his actions. Either way, he guessed it didn’t matter, because Roadhog pushed his mask up and bent down to kiss him. Junkrat melted in his arms, gripping the straps of his harness.

“That all it takes t’get one of those?” he mumbled against Roadhog’s lips. Roadhog laughed and moved the sticker from his leg to the vest of his harness, a badge of honour.

Junkrat began sneaking stickers onto Roadhog after that, fuelled by positive reinforcement and the hope of getting more attention lavished on him. He plastered his scrap gun with hearts and stars, stuck a sparkly pig on the holster for his machete, added stickers alongside the patches of his harness. Whatever felt right to him in the moment. It brightened his day, waiting for Roadhog to notice the latest addition.

He tried to be economical with his use of stickers, but he didn't have the greatest concept of frugality, and it wasn't long before he was down to the last sheet of stickers.

"Oi, don't got much left," he mused to himself. Roadhog had already passed out for the night, and he was amusing himself by talking to the robot. "I guess you deserve one too, dontcha?" he said. He waited for Kiki to beep in response, then slapped a winking cat face on her belly.

The light from Kiki's screen was a welcome addition to their humble home, because it gave him the ability to more keenly observe Roadhog as he slept. Junkrat crawled on top of him and rested his chin on his belly, studying the last of his stickers. He stuck one on the snout of Roadhog's gas mask on a whim and immediately decided that he liked it. A grin curled his lips. "Beautiful," he murmured to himself and reached for another one to attach to the mask. Roadhog grunted in his sleep, and Junkrat froze, hand poised mid-air. When the snoring resumed, he relaxed and peppered the gas mask with the last of his stickers. "My greatest masterpiece," he whispered once he was satisfied with his handiwork.

When the sun rose, he could fully admire the effect of Roadhog's face, usually so intimidating with that black leather mask, covered in adorable pink and white stickers. He could not stop staring.

Junkrat propped his chin on his hand and gazed dreamily at Roadhog. On the one hand, he wanted to spill the beans himself so that he could share his joy with Roadhog. On the other hand, he wanted to keep it to himself as long as possible, because he was sure Roadhog would remove them once he found out. As much as Roadhog enjoyed cute things, you couldn't exactly be a scary criminal when you were covered in sparkly, effeminate stickers. He was bound to discover them sooner or later when he went to shave his stubble after breakfast, but for now, Junkrat was content to enjoy the sight.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Roadhog finally asked.

"Like what?" Junkrat said innocently.

"Don't you come the raw prawn with me. You know what I mean. Like an idiot."

"Oi!" Junkrat exclaimed. "I'm not lookin' any different than normal. This is how I always look atcha." There was some degree of truth to it; he always felt like a lovesick idiot when he watched Roadhog.

"No it isn't. What, is there something on my face?" He said it sarcastically, but realization apparently dawned on him when Junkrat started cackling uncontrollably. Roadhog touched the leather of his mask. "Have you been putting stickers on me when I'm not looking?"

Junkrat clapped his hands in glee. "Yeah! I thought it suited you!"

Roadhog peeled a sticker off and examined the cheerful piece of onigiri. "You put this one on upside-down." He held it up, the sticker affixed to his finger.

"Eh, details, details." Junkrat wasn't concerned with such things, he just appreciated the overall aesthetic of it.

Roadhog picked at another sticker in an attempt to peel it off with his thumbnail. “I thought you were saving these for something special?”

“Yer something special!” Junkrat said, wide-eyed and earnest.

Roadhog stopped trying to remove the sticker and pressed the snout of his mask to the top of Junkrat's head in a kiss. “Smooth,” he said.

“I have my moments,” Junkrat replied. He felt the half-peeled sticker snag on a lock of his hair. When Roadhog pulled away, the sticker remained behind, fluttering from the tips of his hair. He snickered and tugged it off, pulling out several strands of hair along with it. He stuck it on the strap of his own harness, where it promptly fell off.

Roadhog’s hands searched his mask. “How many of these did you even put on me?”

“Twelve.” Junkrat's answer was swift. He'd been keeping track. “So I believe I'll be collectin’ payment from ya when yer done there…” He pointed at his mouth with a grin.

“I’m taking these off,” was all Roadhog said in response. He got up to leave, presumably so he could remove his mask in private.

“Oh, come on!” Junkrat said. “Why dontcha… stick around?” Roadhog pivoted his head to look at him, and he burst into manic giggles, thoroughly pleased with his own pun.

“Someday I’m just gonna leave you,” Roadhog deadpanned.

“No ya won’t,” Junkrat breezily replied, with the utmost confidence.

“Don’t tempt me,” was how Roadhog actually responded, but “you’re right” was how Junkrat chose to interpret it.

“‘Course ya won’t! I’m good company.”

“You’re good at a lot of things. Being annoying is one of them.”

“I beg yer pardon! I’m eccentric, not annoying!” He paused, mid-mock-offence, and a grin slid across his face. “What else am I good at?”

Roadhog gave an amused exhale, a huff of air venting from the filters of his gas mask. He sat back down next to Junkrat. “Lots of things.”

“Yeah?” Junkrat straddled his lap, hooking his fingers beneath the straps of Roadhog’s mask. A restraining hand automatically circled his wrist, Roadhog’s little reminder not to take the mask off entirely. He heeded the warning and carefully slid the mask up, breaking its protective seal. “I could show ya what I’m good at.”

“Kissing is not one of those things.”

“Oi!” His previous fake offence turned into genuine offence. He knew Roadhog felt he used too much tongue, and sure, finesse wasn’t exactly his middle name, but he didn’t think he was bad. “I’ve gotten better!”

Roadhog laughed at him, which only made him more affronted, but any crossness evaporated when Roadhog was the one to instigate the kiss.

Junkrat hungrily kissed him back, greedy for more. Roadhog was acquiescent to all of his advances, letting him work his mouth open and allowing his hands to roam unchecked over his chest. It emboldened Junkrat and gave him the confidence to wander, leaving a wet trail in his wake as he dragged his tongue down Roadhog's neck.

Junkrat mouthed at his collarbone and quickly became preoccupied with sucking a hickey into the crook of his neck. Or trying to, at least. Unlike him, Roadhog had thick skin and didn't bruise easily. Roadhog's hand slid up his bare back to cup the back of his head, which Junkrat took as encouragement to be as rough as he pleased. He bit down, teeth sinking into his neck. When Roadhog groaned in response, Junkrat sniggered and nuzzled his face into Roadhog's shoulder. “Y’like that? Little bit of pain there?”

Roadhog gave a deep sigh and threaded his fingers through Junkrat's patchy hair. The rings on his left hand snagged, but Junkrat didn't mind. “Yeah,” Roadhog exhaled, breath hot against Junkrat's cheek. “Hurts so good.”

Something about the cadence of his voice sent a jolt of lightning straight to Junkrat's crotch. “Holy shit,” he whispered. He hadn't realised how much the sound of Roadhog's voice could turn him on. It was a surprising revelation, and he loved it. He cackled with laughter, wriggling against Roadhog in delight, and bit him even harder. He was determined to leave teeth marks behind, signalling to the world that Roadhog was his, and no one else could have him.

He felt Roadhog’s cock stir with interest against his thigh, and a thrill of excitement surged through him. He took it as a sign that things were different from the last time they'd fooled around, that this time, Roadhog wanted it.

Junkrat abandoned Roadhog's neck and began kissing his way down his chest, periodically pausing to mark him with another love bite. He paused when he reached the swell of Roadhog's belly, needing to take a moment to compose himself against the waves of lust that washed over him. Once he'd recovered, he resumed his wet trail, occasionally nipping at the tattoo.

Upon reaching the area where flesh met the thick canvas of Roadhog's overalls, Junkrat couldn't hold it in anymore. “God, I've been waiting for this me whole life,” he moaned before burying his face into Roadhog's clothed crotch. His long nose bumped against the bulge in Roadhog's pants.

His euphoria was short-lived. Roadhog’s hand snatched the harness strap that wrapped around Junkrat’s back, and he lifted him up, like a cat picking up a kitten by the scruff of its neck.

Junkrat looked up at him, confusion written all over his face. Roadhog shook his head. “No?” he said, voice uncharacteristically small.

“No,” Roadhog confirmed.

He looked down. Roadhog was no longer half hard, and it stung. “Okay. Okay, I get it, put me down.”

Roadhog let go, plopping him down on the concrete floor.

Junkrat straightened out his harness, wincing where the straps had cut into his chest. “What?” he asked. “What is it, do ya just not like getting blown?” He laughed nervously. “Cause I mean, I really want to, heh, but if ya don’t like it, I can always…”

“No, I do.” Roadhog fixed his gas mask, obscuring the exposed half of his face once more. The stickers that were still present didn’t bring any levity to the situation.

“Oh.” This was not the answer Junkrat had been expecting. “So it’s me, then?”

“Kind of.”

Junkrat’s shrill laughter was more than a little unhinged. “Oh, good! Great! Glad to hear it!”

“Not just you. Kind of me, too,” Roadhog hastened to add.

“Yeah, yeah, I get it! Ya don't gotta explain.” He turned away from Roadhog, too miffed to look at him any longer and unable to hide his hurt feelings. He rummaged around in their pile of junk to uncover his frag launcher. He hefted it against his shoulder and glanced back at Roadhog, who was simply sitting there, watching him. “Now if ya don’t mind, I got some things to take care of.”

He couldn’t be sure, but he thought he felt Roadhog’s eyes flick down to the front of his pants. This was one of the things he needed to take care of. He turned on his heel and stalked off.

On the other side of their unfinished domicile, Junkrat had built several towers out of the many empty soft drink cans he had accumulated. He had constructed the miniature tin city on a whim; it had just been a fun project to keep his hands busy, but they would make for good target practice.

Junkrat plopped down on a stack of metal beams that had been covered by a tarp. He shoved a hand down the front of his shorts, jerking off as he vented his frustrations by picking each tower off with a well-aimed pull of the trigger. He wasn't even terribly concerned with making it feel good; he just needed to release the tension that had built up inside. Watching the explosions of his grenades and the cans flying everywhere helped, strangely enough. Mass destruction was a bit of a turn-on.

He didn’t want to think about Roadhog after being dismissed so rudely, but his face (well, his gas mask, really -- but it was such an extension of who Roadhog was, that it might as well have been his face) kept cropping up in his mind’s eye. Each time, he tried to shake the image off, but it was a futile effort.

Junkrat came into his hand with a frustrated growl. It was likely the weakest and most unsatisfying orgasm he'd ever experienced. He wiped his hand off on the tarp and turned his full attention back to his grenades. He popped off the rack of his frag launcher and reloaded it.

“Fuckin’… piece of piss,” he grumbled. He wasn’t sure who he was insulting, exactly: Roadhog or himself. He wasn’t dumb, he knew perfectly well that he was odd, that his brain didn’t quite work right, that he was a touch more messed up then the rest of the Junkers. Still, he wasn’t exactly broken up about it -- he considered his childhood unconventional, not tragic, and even when his memory failed him, or he didn’t understand certain social mores, or he made bad judgment calls, he didn’t dwell on it. He was happy with the life he had built for himself with Roadhog.

But the sting of rejection brought all his shortcomings to the front of his mind, and he had to wonder if Roadhog didn’t want him because he wasn’t good enough. Junkrat was fully conscious about the fact that his brain didn’t always make the proper connections, but the connection between Roadhog’s refusal to further their relationship and Junkrat’s abnormal nature seemed too obvious. Why would anyone want to fuck a grown man who couldn’t hold a pencil with the appropriate grip? Who took such childlike glee in plastering stickers everywhere? Who was clingy and possessive and fucked up in the head?

A nudge by his left knee brought him out of his cycle of self-loathing, and he looked up to find Kiki hovering nearby, an empty Kiki Cola can in her tiny robotic arm. He took it from her with the faintest glimmer of a smile. With an electronic chirp, Kiki returned to the last tower he had destroyed and began reassembling it.

“Yer not so bad after all, are ya?” Junkrat said, setting the can down next to him. For every structure that he blew up, Kiki brought him a can with her face on it before rebuilding what he had demolished.

He was so absorbed in blowing up soft drink cans and talking to himself that he didn’t notice Roadhog’s presence at first. He only jolted out of his reverie when he felt the telltale sensation of someone sitting down behind him.

Roadhog wrapped his arms around him and held him tight even as he tried to violently squirm out of his grip. Finally, Junkrat gave up and relaxed, sagging against Roadhog’s chest. He was too tired to struggle, and he didn’t like being mad at his partner. Besides, there was something about Roadhog’s embrace that always managed to calm him down, no matter what kind of tantrum he’d worked himself into.

"Sorry," Roadhog apologised, the snout of his mask snuffling against Junkrat's hair as he spoke. "Could've worded that better." Poor wording or not, it didn't change the sentiment of his message, but Junkrat could at least take solace in the knowledge that Roadhog didn't hate him. Didn’t explain why he wouldn’t let him blow him, but it was a step in the right direction. He still loved him enough to give him one of those mask kisses that Junkrat adored, so that was a small comfort.

"S'all good," Junkrat muttered, closing his eyes and leaning back against Roadhog. Their breaths fell in sync with each other, Junkrat unconsciously breathing in time with the rise and fall of Roadhog's stomach. They were still for a few moments, the room silent asides from the quiet clinking of aluminium as Kiki rebuilt the pyramids of soft drink cans that Junkrat had ruined. "She brought me some of the cans I blew up, y'know," Junkrat said.

His hair fluttered as Roadhog exhaled in amusement, the huff of air venting through the filters of his mask. "She's smart."

Junkrat wasn't sure when they had started referring to the robot as a "she" rather than an "it." It was vaguely unsettling to think about, but Kiki had grown on him. Non-omnic robots weren't all that bad, as it turned out. Virtual intelligence was supremely preferable to legitimately intelligent bots operating under the delusion that they possessed souls. "What a load of crock," he said out loud.

Roadhog paused. "You don't think she's smart?" he clarified.

"No, no, no, she is! For a robot, anyway. I was just--" He was quickly realizing that he hadn't actually voiced the thoughts that had been tumbling through his head. "--never mind, alright?"

Roadhog didn't press further. He was used to these gaps in their conversation, when Junkrat spouted out non-sequiturs that had nothing to do with the topic at hand, all because his brain had jumped from one neural connection to the other without his properly communicating them.

"Look, let's just... let's go out, okay?" Junkrat finally said. "Forget about all this." The rejection still lingered in his mind, but he hoped that a full day of mischief and mayhem would push it out of his memory. He didn't want to keep reliving that moment of being physically pulled away from Roadhog and told that he was to blame for the abrupt change in mood, that it was his fault for being undesirable.

Sometimes he wondered if Roadhog only stayed with him for the money. Their various heists were lucrative, and they did divide the spoils fifty-fifty. Maybe their relationship was all just a charade, an amusement meant to pass the time in between their crime sprees.

It was a sobering thought.

Ajax's $500 million football factory

Johan Cruyff, Ruud Krol, Arie Haan and Jonny Repp helped win three European Cups in the 1970s. Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard starred in the eighties before making way for Patrick Kluivert, Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf in the nineties.

As well as being some of the most storied names in world football, all were graduates of the Ajax academy — an institution long-famed for its prolific player output and pursuit of technical perfection.

The Amsterdam-based club continues to churn out some of the most exciting talents in world football today.

Frenkie De Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Justin Kluivert are among the most recent to roll off its well-tuned production line.

In the past, this trio would have formed the backbone of the next great Ajax side.

But maintaining talent has become an increasing challenge with the Dutch league unable to compete with the riches swirling around competitions in England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy.

Nineteen-year-old Kluivert moved to Roma for 17.25 million euros ($19.54million) in 2018 while De Jong, 21, will join Barcelona later this year for $85 million. A host of Europe’s top clubs are also likely to battle it out for De Ligt, also 19, in the summer.

While players have always moved on from Ajax, Blind acknowledges that the club’s most prized assets seem to leave far earlier than in generations gone by.

There is “the risk that they go in two, three or four years” after being brought through from the academy, says Blind, whose son Daley was a product of the club’s academy.

“That’s very difficult because all the time you have to rebuild the team,” he adds.

Adapting the model

Blind captained an Ajax side that reached back-to-back Champions League finals in the mid-1990s, triumphing in 1995 and finishing runners up in 1996.

That team stuck together for a number of years and included a plethora of academy talent alongside established players like Blind and the Finland international Jari Litmanen.

In the 1970s, Ajax won three consecutive European Cups (the competition that preceded the Champions League) with the likes of Cruyff, Haan and Johan Neeskens in its ranks.

Cruyff, the poster boy for Dutch soccer and its philosophy of “Total Football,” left for Barcelona in 1973, aged 27. But he did so having won 17 trophies in eight years as a first team player at Ajax.

Few of Ajax’s top talents hang around that long now. And for Ajax CEO and former goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, the changing reality has forced the club to adapt.

These days, Ajax offers an elite finishing school for young footballers as well as a pathway to first team football for the most talented. Those who excel can likely expect to be sold for the right price with the next crop of talented young players progressing to replace those who leave.

Other clubs of similar stature and pedigree across Europe — such as Benfica, Porto, Celtic and Anderlecht — have adopted similar models. What they lack in commercial or broadcasting riches they look to close the gap in player sales.

Analysis of UEFA figures by 21st Club, a football insight firm, shows that the percentage of club revenues from transfer proceeds increased from 26% in 2014 to 38% in 2017.

But few have mastered this model as well as Ajax, in large part thanks to the performance of its academy.

“We don’t have the legends, we create them” says Van der Sar, who admits he expects to lose at least two to three players every year.

The main thing for those coming through the system is to “give something back to Ajax” while they are there, he continues. “Win a trophy, make the support proud and of course we know the next step will be to a big club.”

Playing smart

Ajax has chalked-up $566 million transfer fees since the 2000-01 season, according to data on the TransferMarkt website, although not all of those sales related to youth academy products.

Ajax has also looked to capitalize on its reputation for bringing through the very best young players.

In November 2017, Van der Sar travelled to China to announce a five-year partnership with Guangzhou R&F to develop what a club press release at the time called the “best youth academy in China.”

Ajax also opened an office in New York last year which it said would enable it to “positively influence the future of soccer” in the US as well as “connect companies and clubs in the US to the Ajax brand.”

Van der Sar says he would love to have access to the riches available to clubs in other leagues.

But Ajax has had to be more creative in how it operates. The ultimate aim is find advantages the club can exploit to compete with richer rivals — something it has managed to do in recent years.

Ajax qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League for the first time in 13-years this season. In 2017, meanwhile, it reached the final of the Europa League, Europe’s secondary club competition, where it lost to Manchester United.

“I want to bring Ajax back on the world podium and deliver players for ourselves — to win trophies but also to (provide) the next step for (the players),” Van der Sar says.

“Hopefully, as many Ajax players or ex-Ajax players are going to win the Champions League,” he adds. “I’d rather have it with our club. But then if not with a respective big club in other countries,” he adds.

In the shadow of Cruyff

For the likes of former Ajax team manager, David Endt, replicating the qualities that make the Ajax Academy unique is not simple.*

Endt was a product of the academy himself, although he never made a first team appearance. He cites good coaches, the culture of the club and the city that hosts it as vital factors in its success.*

“Many of the trainers come from Amsterdam,” Endt says, where there is an attitude to “be courageous”and go “out and play with conviction.” Others are former players who know what it takes to make it at the club, he adds.

Ajax christened its “School for the Future” in 2015 that allows young players to receive a customized education at a facility on the club’s training ground.

It aims to ensure that those who don’t make it at least have qualifications to fall back on. But it also seeks to produce intelligent students that can understand the way Ajax plays.

The philosophy of the great Cruyff and his preferred 4-3-3 formation with technically adept and intelligent players continues to define much of what Ajax does.

Endt believes what set Cruyff apart from many of his contemporaries as a player was his “out of the box thinking” that gave him the edge on physically stronger or quicker opponents.

And he sees something similar at play in the way Ajax has developed its business.

As a fan, it can be frustrating to see promising talents sold to richer clubs, he admits.

Then again, he’ adds, you have to find a way “to outwit” those who may be bigger and stronger.

How can you let this happen? Look at him. How can that be the face of our company? He looks like he crawled out of a gutter and mugged a twenty-year-old college kid on a bender. How is this better for our bottom line?”

My mother clasps her hands in front of her. “I’m sorry, Armstrong, but this decision wasn’t mine to make. I know this is hard for you, but your grandmother and fath—”

Armstrong stomps his foot, exactly as a toddler would. “The company is mine! Lincoln can’t have it!”

I raise a hand, half to quiet my brother and also to find out what the freaking deal is. “Whoa, let’s back this bus up. Can someone explain what’s going on?”

“You’ve been appointed as the CEO of Moorehead Media, according to the will,” Christophe—no R, because that would make it far too pedestrian a name—my father’s lawyer says.

I’m working on trying to remain calm as I address my grandmother. “You didn’t say anything about me being CEO. You said you needed my help.”

“Running the company, yes,” she says through a practiced, stiff smile.

It’s her warning face, but seriously, when she said she needed my help for a few months I figured it meant I’d be keeping Armstrong in line while she sorted out who was going to take over the company, which I realize now was a stupid assumption.

“I didn’t think that meant CEO. How am I going to run a company with this dickhead on staff?” I motion to my brother.

“The name calling is unnecessary,” G-mom replies.

“Lincoln’s not even part of this family! He hasn’t attended one event in the past five years except for Dad’s funeral. He didn’t bother coming to my wedding and now he’s going to run the company? How is that fair?”

I snort. “Your wedding was an expensive joke.”

He crosses his arms over his chest. “I was set up. Amalie had cold feet and made me out to look like the bad guy.”

The woman beside him shoots him disgusted look.

Armstrong clears his throat and tugs at his collar. “My wedding is not the real issue. The point is that you’ve never involved yourself in any part of this family and now you think you can come in and take over. I will not stand by and let this happen!” He keeps jabbing his finger at me, as if he’s engaged in a finger sword fight.

I lean back in my chair and lace my fingers behind my neck. Armstrong has always been reactive. And self-absorbed. For a while it seemed like he finally had it together—back when he was engaged. But ever since that fiasco of a wedding he seems to have come completely unglued. Again. But worse this time. “Someone needs a timeout.”

Recap and review: Episode 3x20 - Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen

This is a recap and my personal review of Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen. It will contain spoilers, so read on only if you want to know what happens.

Recap:

Riley and Maya want to do something new and exciting, and decide to celebrate their sweet sixteens now. When they announce this in class, Cory points out that Riley has a tendency to want to accelerate the clock, and she agrees that she feels like they are growing up very fast.  Cory states that you can either be surprised by what's coming in the future, or you can look to the landmarks of your lives so far. He gives them as an assignment to tell him what's going to happen in their junior year, when they are all 16 or 17 years old.

The group goes to Topanga's to discuss what junior year might be like. When asked if Riley and Maya will still be best friends, their answer is immediate and positive. When Lucas asks Riley if she thinks they will still be together, Riley is less certain, but states that she is hopeful. Lucas says that he is hopeful too, and the two hold hands. Realizing that emotions play into this, which can't be scientifically calculated, Smackle freaks out thinking she's going to fail the assignment, and consequently crashes, like a computer.

While Smackle is buffering, Farkle asks to talk to Lucas, and the two go outside. Zay starts playing with the idle Smackle, and Riley and Maya stay behind talking about the future. They soon realize that they might not stay together forever, as Riley wants to go to a college in America while Maya thinks she might go to Europe to study art. When Smackle comes to and asks what she missed, Zay repeats Riley and Mayas conclusion that they're all probably not going to stay together after high school, and all the girls get upset.

Outside, Farkle and Lucas are talking. Farkle tells Lucas that if Smackle has feelings for him (which she has frequently alluded to), he will step aside. Lucas seems unconcerned with this matter, and the rest of the group comes outside. Smackle is still scared of failing, and asks Riley if Cory knows what his doing giving them this assignment. The group agrees that Cory is a great teacher and probably has a plan.

Lucas finds Smackle alone at Topanga's and sits down right next to her. This makes her uncomfortable, but he stays there and starts giving her compliments. She responds very matter-of-factly, and Lucas points out that if Farkle were there, she would have made some joke about Lucas hitting on her. She then admits that she only does that because she's afraid Farkle doesn't really like her, and she's trying to protect herself. Farkle was hiding behind the counter the entire time and heard everything, and he tells her he likes her just as she is.

Back in class, Riley and Maya has realized that they can't really control what happens in the future, but you can choose who you want to keep in your life. They decide to throw a party to celebrate that, but when they get to the Matthews' house, Topanga looks upset. She tells them she has been named head of her firm's London office.

Review:

Is it me, or has "growing up too fast" been the topic of 90 % of the episodes of this show? Aside from the repeat topic, this episode was alright. I like that they realized that they can still remain friends even if they study at different schools, as friendships don't have to end just because you choose different paths in life. That this group will be splitting up after high school should come as no surprise to anyone. Their grades vary as much as their interests, it would make no sense for them all to go to the same college.

I'm glad we finally cleared up Smackle's continued flirting with Lucas, because that's been making me uncomfortable. I'm not quite sure what happened in Farkle's conversation with Lucas, though. I know he said he'd step aside, and then he said something about Riley, but he spoke so fast and/or unclearly that I couldn't catch it. I played it back five times, and then I gave up. Feel free to enlighten me if whatever he said about Riley in that situation was important.

Topanga's transfer was a big twist, and I'm interested to see what will happen with that. I've actually managed to stay away from spoilers, so I genuinely don't know how they're going to play it. My theory would be that somehow Topanga ends up leaving without her family. I don't actually think that's likely, but I can see this storyline being written because Danielle wanted out, and they couldn't very well kill her off, so… We'll see, I guess.

He didn’t say which coin would do the job but it’s likely to be one that uses decentralized finance protocols, or DeFi. Bitcoin still isn’t one of them. And in the meantime, the Bitcoin clock keeps ticking. Less than two months to go now before the next halving.

YouTube is still banning videos about cryptocurrencies, and as always, it’s never clear which videos they want to remove and which they’re willing to keep. US congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ) is trying to bring some clarity but only to the regulation of cryptocurrencies. His new bill, the “Crypto-Currency Act of 2020” tries to categorize different kinds of crypto assets and assign them to appropriate regulators.

Government has also been busy in South Korea. The country’s National Assembly has legalized cryptocurrency trading and holding. It’s not all good news though. Mining is now an expensive operation, with Bitcoin miners needing heaps of expensive equipment and cheap electricity to take a cut of the $14 million worth of Bitcoin handed out in rewards every day. But it is worth remembering that BTC isn’t the only coin with mining rewards, and mining certainly isn’t the only way to generate returns from cryptocurrencies. Asset rater Morningstar has just rated securities issued on a blockchain. The securities come from FAT Brands, the food company best known for Fat Burger, Buffalo’s, and Penderosa Steakhouse. The security was structured in a way that included a number of Ethereum tokens to ease digital representation. Morningstar says the move will improve transparency. Alipay, too, is getting creative with its fintech. It’s adding lite applications to its interface. There may be lessons there for exchanges.

How Unity built the world’s most popular game engine

What do BMW, Tencent, Pokémon Go creator Niantic, movie director Jon Favreau and construction giant Skanska have in common? They’re all using the same platform to create their products.

Founded in a small Copenhagen apartment in 2004, Unity Technologies’ makes a game engine — a software platform for building video games. But the company, which was recently valued around $6 billion and could be headed toward an IPO, is becoming much more than that.

“Unity wants to be the 3D operating system of the world,” says Sylvio Drouin, VP of the Unity Labs R&D team.

Customers can design, buy, or import digital assets like forests, sound effects, and aliens and create the logic guiding how all these elements interact with players. Nearly half of the world’s games are built with Unity, which is particularly popular among mobile game developers. 

And in the fourteen years since Unity’s engine launched, the size of the global gaming market has exploded from $27 billion to $135 billion, driven by the rise of mobile gaming, which now comprises the majority of the market.

Unity is increasingly used for 3D design and simulations across other industries like film, automotive, and architecture and is now used to create 60% of all augmented and virtual reality experiences. That positions Unity — as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg argued in a 2015 memo in favor of acquiring it — as a key platform for the next wave of consumer technology after mobile.

Unity’s growth is a case study of Clayton Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation. While other game engines targeted the big AAA game makers at the top of the console and PC markets, Unity went after independent developers with a less robust product that was better suited to their needs and budget. 

As it gained popularity, the company captured growth in frontier market segments and also expanded upmarket to meet the needs of higher-performance game makers. Today, it’s making a push to become the top engine for building anything in interactive 3D.

This article is part of my ongoing research into the future of interactive media experiences. This research has included interviews with dozens of developers, executives, and investors in gaming and other industries, including interviews with over 20 Unity executives.

Founding

Unity was founded in Copenhagen by Nicholas Francis, Joachim Ante, and David Helgason. Its story began on an OpenGL forum in May 2002, where Francis posted a call for collaborators on an open source shader-compiler (graphics tool) for the niche population of Mac-based game developers like himself. It was Ante, then a high school student in Berlin, who responded. 

Ante complemented Francis’ focus on graphics and gameplay with an intuitive sense for back-end architecture. Because the game he was working on with another team wasn’t going anywhere, they collaborated on the shader part-time while each pursued their own game engine projects, but decided to combine forces upon meeting in-person. In a sprint to merge the codebases of their engines, they camped out in Helgason’s apartment for several days while he was out of town. The plan was to start a game studio grounded in robust tech infrastructure that could be licensed as well.

Helgason and Francis had worked together since high school, working on various web development ventures and even short-lived attempts at film production. Helgason dropped in and out of the University of Copenhagen while working as a freelance web developer. He provided help where he could and joined full-time after several months, selling his small stake in a web development firm to his partners. 

According to Ante, Helgason was “good with people” and more business-oriented, so he took the CEO title after the trio failed to find a more experienced person for the role. (It would be two years before Ante and Francis extended the co-founder title and a corresponding amount of equity to Helgason.)

They recruited a rotating cast to help them for free while prototyping a wide range of ideas. The diversity of ideas they pursued resulted in an engine that could handle a broad range of use cases. Commercializing the engine became a focus, as was coming up with a hit game that would show the engine off to its best advantage; for indie developers, having to reconstruct an engine with every new game idea was a pain point that, if solved, would enable more creative output. 

Supported by their savings, a €25,000 investment from Ante’s father, and Helgason’s part-time job at a café, they pressed on for three years, incorporating in the second year (2004) with the name Over The Edge Entertainment.

The game they ultimately committed to launching in spring 2005, GooBall, was “way too hard to play,” says Ante and didn’t gain much traction. Recognizing that they were better at building development tools and prototypes than commercially-viable games, they bet their company on the goal of releasing a game engine for the small Mac-based developer community. Linking the connotations of collaboration and cross-compatibility, they named the engine Unity.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promises floor vote on FIRST STEP Act after midterm election if more than 60 Senators want to move forward

This short piece from The Hill, headlined "McConnell looking at criminal justice reform after midterms," provides an encouraging update on the prospects for federal criminal justice reform after next month's  election:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says he will move a criminal justice reform compromise after the Nov. 6 election if it has 60 votes.

The Senate GOP conference is divided on the package, which merged a House-passed prison-reform bill with bipartisan sentencing reform provisions crafted by the Senate....

“Criminal justice has been much discussed,” McConnell told reporters Wednesday. “What we’ll do after the election is take a whip count and if there are more than 60 senators who want to move forward on that bill, we’ll find time to address it.”

It’s a significant commitment from McConnell who has resisted bringing criminal justice reform legislation up for a vote because it divides his conference.

I blogged here a prior Hill article from a couple of months ago during Senate negotiations over the FIRST STEP Act which indicated that the White House back then had secured "30 to 32 ... 'yes' votes among Republican senators [and hoped] that the number of GOP supporters could eventually grow as many as 40 to 46."  That article led me to speculate in August that a version of the FIRST STEP Act could perhaps garner up to 90 votes in the Senate, and I do not think this head-counting is likely to change all that dramatically after the election (though one never knows).  Even if "only" 30 GOP Senators favor moving forward on the FIRST STEP Act, that will be more than enough for Senator McConnell to move ahead unless a whole lot of Democratic Senators decide they want to hold out for a more ambitious bill (which I think is unlikely). 

In other words, I am starting to think that the prospect of the FIRST STEP Act becoming law before the end of the year might be pretty darn good.  I am never inclined to count on Congress on get anything done, but on this front it does seem we are getting closer and closer.

How to Screw Up Your Bankruptcy Discharge

In the vast majority of cases, the bankruptcy discharge is the primary reason debtors enter the Bankruptcy Court. After all, people file bankruptcy to get rid of debt, and a federal court order is certainly an effective way of making this happen. However, receiving a bankruptcy discharge is not guaranteed, debtors are required to follow the rules and act in good faith if they expect to have their case go smoothly.

Grounds for Objecting to the Bankruptcy Discharge

Bankruptcy offers protection to those who are honest and punishes those who try to game the system. Section 727 of the Bankruptcy Code sets out a number of reasons a creditor or trustee can object to a debtor’s discharge and most center around lack of transparency.

If you’re planning on filing for bankruptcy, be prepared to lay all your cards on the table. Section 727 allows for the challenge of a discharge under the following circumstances:

Trying to defraud a creditor, the debtor concealed or transferred property within one year before filing (this includes transferring property that is part of the bankruptcy estate once your case has been filed);

The debtor has destroyed records or failed to keep adequate records;

The debtor has lied under oath;

The debtor can’t explain a loss of assets, in other words they can’t give a good reason why property they previously owned is missing or unaccounted for.

Be Honest with the Bankruptcy Court

When you walk into your first bankruptcy consultation, the focus is mainly on debt. You have debt, don’t see a way out, and are looking to a professional for guidance. The bankruptcy attorney sitting on the other side of the desk is certainly going to give you guidance on how best to deal with that underwater mortgage or high credit card balances, but they’ll be equally concerned with what’s in your garage, on your wife’s finger, and whether you’ve transferred assets to family members recently.

In other words, bankruptcy is about assets as much as it is about debts. When you file bankruptcy, you swear under oath that you have told the Bankruptcy Court about everything you own. Similarly, your attorney represents that, to the best of his or her knowledge, your filed papers are accurate. These promises have meaning and there are consequences if they are broken.

Tough financial times cause stress and people aren’t always at their best when they’re stressed out. No matter how bad of shape you might be in, don’t try to game the system — make sure you tell your bankruptcy attorney everything. Failing to disclose an asset can result in a creditor or bankruptcy trustee objecting to your discharge and they have their ways of finding property. Similarly, giving away or concealing property before filing puts your discharge in jeopardy.

Bankruptcy Trustees Will Investigate

Remember, bankruptcy trustees essentially work for your creditors and make money by keeping 25% of all the property they’re able to sell. If the trustee suspects that you might have left assets out of your bankruptcy papers, they will schedule a 2004 exam and ask you questions under oath. It’s not a pleasant experience.

If evidence confirms that you might have concealed or intentionally transferred property before your bankruptcy case, you’ll be sued. If your discharge is denied for fraud your case will still be administered, meaning you’ll lose all non-exempt assets without any debt relief. The property you tried to hide will be sold and you’ll leave Bankruptcy Court owing all your old creditors.

In severe cases, omissions on bankruptcy schedules can rise to the level of criminal activity and result in prosecution. People do go to jail for bankruptcy fraud.
