So, let’s do the new Z-ARC cards (Z-ARCards?), invididually.

This bad boy right here, Pendulum Evolution, is based off Structure Deck: Pendulum Evolution from the OCG.

Each one here represents a Yuboy, and they are in the order of their appearance (and their Dragons’ Magician forms’ set order in Pendulum Evolution).

**Reddish-orange one is Yuya.

**Blueish one is Yuto.

**Green one is Yugo.

**Purple one is Yuri.

The colors superficially resemble their eye glows during their Berserk Modes, and their Duel Disk’s colors, but more specifically meant to reference En Cards.

**Yuya’s Pendulum is reddish-orange, because that is the color that represents Effect Monsters (see, Herald of Orange Light), which En Flowers negates.

***It is also vaguely similar to an orange tomato.

***Orange is shown to draw “an arc of light”, referring to the Pendulum Summon chant, but also Ray’s Beyond the Pendulum form’s Kanji name, Trajectory Magician. (The actual arc itself is reddish-fuchsia, alluding to Ray.)

***En Flowers’ card artwork actually has a reddish-orangish glow.

***While some versions of Dark Magician, and Dark Magician Girl have orangeish background, this colour is more likely in reference to Gandora’s official non-animé artworks, particularly Gandora-X’s aura.

**Yuto’s Pendulum (or at least, presumably), is bright blue, this alludes to Astral, and other stuff associated with him, such as Emperor’s Key, or Astral cards.

***It is also vaguely similar to a blue eggplant.

***Blue one more or less has the same colour as Yuya’s regular pendulum, alluding to his status as his aibou.

***Printed version of Number 39: Utopia also has a blue background.

***En Birds actually as a blue glow/artwork, despite having a yellow gem in its bracelet form.

***Black Fang Magician, Dark Rebellion’s Magician form also has a blue aura.

**Yugo’s Pendulum (or at least, presumably) is bright green, though this isn’t as bright as Rin’s hair. It is closer to Synchro Gates.

***It is also vaguely similar to an unripe banana.

***Though it is not clear in the most pictures, the printed version of White Wing Magician has greenish aura.

***Printed Version of Stardust Dragon also has a green background.

***En Winds is more or less the same colour.

**Yuri’s Pendulum (or at least presumably) is dark purple. This is not similar to his Berserk Mode eyes, but rather to his purple aura.

***It is vaguely similar to a dark purple plum, or dark purple red cabbage.

***It is similar to Elemental HERO Neos’s regular artwork’s background glow, which is purple.

****It is also similar to Yubel variations.

***It is actually dissimilar to Purple Poison Magician, who has a bluer aura to match En Moon.

I have already discussed the effects, but here goes:

**First effect supports Main Deck Pendulums with 2500 ATK. This effect is designed to switch Astrograph Sorcerer with Supreme King Gate Magician, but it can work with other cards, such as Odd-Eyes variants, Yuya’s Pendulum Spellcasters etc.

**Second effect supports Extra Deck Pendulums. This one is more important, since not only this support Z-ARC directly, it can also work with the Odd-Eyes variants.

**Third effect works for Z-ARC specifically. It grants him the ability to attack all monsters your opponent controls.

***This is the inverse of Z-ARC’s regular strategy, as seen in Supreme Face-Off, which forces the opponent to attack his monsters.

The effects, and artwork seem to imply Yu-boys were involved in Astrograph Sorcerer’s purification, since, as seen with the individual pendulums’ colors, they also carry the essence of En Cards.

This probably ties into Beyond the Pendulum (Ray’s current monster form)’s card destruction effect, which requires the Pendulum Summon of two cards with different original Levels. The original card was designed for Gentrude, and Ladyange, the representations of Yuya’s self-image, and Yuya’s image of Yuzu, but presumably Astrograph Sorcerer, and Chronograph Sorcerer, Z-ARC’s Dark Magician, and Dark Magician Girl equivalents also work, latter of which is not appearing here.

Though, since Soul of the Supreme King Heavenly Dragon showcases Astrograph Sorcerer being purified after Z-ARC, the destruction effect is likely initially used to destroy Z-ARC’s backrow (Supreme King Gates, Supreme Face-Off, Supreme Presence), and then the Supreme King Servant Dragons. So 4 Yu-boys correspond to 8 cards.

I guess if these pendulums get physically released, Yuya will likely end up wearing his second one as a bracelet to match Yuzu’s, since this is technically just another form of En Flowers. Or he will have worse taste, and wear them by tying them together the way Ray does in her Beyond the Pendulum form.

A Modest Proposal

Rin explains to Sesshomaru in the most heartfelt of ways why she refers to him the way she does.

After the first few weeks of bluster and posturing, peace reigned supreme in the Western Palace with its lord insisting there be little in the way of intrusion in his daily going-ons. Rin was happy to watch from the rafters, and behind doorways in emptied corridors reserved for servants, while Sesshomaru conducted the uproarious attitudes of proud yōkai who would gladly fall at his feet. And fall they would if they continued to vex him.

Her giggles were kept quiet behind her hand before she spirited away, befriending some of the servants who could keep secrets, and winning over the ones who would not. It wouldn’t do for her explorations to be impeded by politics and while the yōkai were great in power and longevity, they were woefully keen on gossip.

Everything from the set of her clothes to the way she held her bow, flicked knives from the long flowing sleeves that covered her hands. Childishly, some of the demoness would say. There were some who glimpsed upon her petite size and thought her meek. Insisting on trying to outwit her in everything from wordplay to knowledge. The pleasure she took in their stricken expressions would make a priestess blush, but she said little, not wanting bruised egos to chafe her lord’s.  

Pleasing the masses was the furthest thing from her mind. After all, she was there as not only Sesshomaru’s companion but a member of his council. Keen in the ways of yōkai, most of his generals and lieutenants were, they were abysmally terrible when it pertained to humans. Trickery was one thing. Honest and genuine communication to avoid bloodshed was another. And then there was the inevitability of lust. Curiosities of the Inu no Taishō’s human spread far with a number of nobles, in hopes of visiting Sesshomaru and gaining his favor, leering glances and volleying questions at Rin out of his earshot.

Jaken insisted that she pay them little mind out of the usual respects. Not take up challenges for games or long-winded conversations milling about the gardens away from the watchful eyes of those who could protect her. Strong though she may be, Jaken reminded, she had no powers of purification and her tricks could only do so much. His concerns were touching. And she made sure to reward him with delightful treats and firsthand gifts from her travels outside of the castle’s walls.

Formalities and rules were easy to slip into but once she was free of them, amidst the sprawling forests and sloping knolls, fields of flowers and winding gravel roads — she was herself and not Lady Rin. Nor was she the buffer between Sesshomaru’s agitation toward custom and the freedom they’d known for the years they’d resumed traveling together.

Rin smiled as she rose to her feet, looking up to the lone figure set beneath the single tree in the dell. Amidst the springy grass, freshly green and glimmering almost yellow in the sunlight, Sesshomaru rested with the posture of a man who ruled the world yet couldn’t be bothered to lay eyes upon it. His back resting against the base of the tree trunk, one leg half-bent while the other laid parting a small cluster of hyssop.

Afternoon sunlight shone off the silver of his hair almost making it seem white, and beneath a crown of flowers set upon his head by Rin, he truly seemed aristocratic. Her fingers danced over the silvery strands, curling them in between her fingers as she settled in the grass, careful not to bury her knees in the dirt lest another lecture from Jaken rattle in her ears. A small smile ghosted her lips, tracing the pointed tip of one of his ears, the silvery strands hooked behind it as her fingertips fled to his jaw.

Formality wouldn’t allow her to touch him so flippantly. Sure enough, a number of complaints would be voiced and she knew from experience he would listen to none. To him, she was an exception — a confusing one in her eyes — but an exception nonetheless. And to her, he was an enigma — a puzzle she was learning day after day — and never grew tired of. Graciously, Rin cradled his cheek and brushed her thumb along the marks on his cheeks, admiring the long curved eyelashes barely dusting his cheeks.

“If you allow me to touch you any longer, Lord Sesshomaru, there will be trouble to pay later.”

Not to her surprise, his eyes opened lazily and flicked up to meet her own as he raised his head, movements fluid and graceful. There was a slight contempt in his eyes fettered by amusement. Trouble, she thought, would be something he would welcome from the ease of lordship. He tipped his head to one side inadvertently pushing his cheek against her hand and settling there.

Sesshomaru held her gaze after a moment’s pause then leant forward, the moon of his forehead disappearing from her sight, gold encasing her entire world as their noses brushed. “Why do you refer to me as such, Rin?”

Rapt with attention and confused by the sudden closeness, Rin found herself at a loss for words and almost tongue-tied. “Pardon?”

“You are not beneath me,” Sesshomaru said in a low voice. It was remarkably loud to her own ears but she was certain that no one else aside from them would be able to hear it. Jaken remained in the palace grounds with A-Un, and aside from the insects and the creatures of the forest, it was only them.

“And yet you refer to me as your lord.” Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed and she could see the displeasure in them. A slight wrinkle in his brow, warm breath ghosting against her lips as he tipped his chin forward. “You never cared much for formality in your youth.”

Ignoring the temptation from the briefest touch of his lips to hers, Rin smiled. “Are you calling me old, Lord Sesshomaru?”

“You avoid the question,” he said. Despite the lack of a smile on his face, she could hear one in his voice and laughter bubbled up from her chest.

Of course, this was another part of the changes in their life that she didn’t take to gladly. Dancing around one another with unspoken sentiments and meanings. While she was adept at keeping up the movements there were some days where she simply wanted his arms around her, and to listen to the waves crash against the cliffs. Simple pleasures but they were enough to keep her when their duties separated them.

“You are my lord,” Rin insisted, and the wrinkle in Sesshomaru’s brow deepened, but she kissed him lightly when his lips parted effectively silencing the words. “Listen.”

His eyes widened for a split second then narrowed into his usual veneer, gold flicking over her features before he hummed once and waited.

Rin curled her fingers against his cheek, reaching up to cradle his jaw in her hands, brushing her nails purposefully behind his ears. A deep inhale, far more rushed and startled than his usual controlled breaths, cracking the veneer as he stared at her with surprise.

“You are my lord,” she murmured and all the unspoken words seemed to tumble out at once. Understanding crossed his features and the moment, frozen between them, melted as he drew her into his arms. A shriek of laughter coming from her as he kissed her firmly.

As far as proposals went, she believed it was a modest one.

What should I do

This came out of me wondering how Zarc felt post canon. I guess a companion piece to I’m Sorry. 

Also merry Zarcmas. 

Yuzu opened her eyes and to her shock she found herself in a silent white void, floating aimlessly. It had been a few months since she had returned to existence after Yuya’s duel with Reiji and since then every day had been ... well crowded. While Serena, Rin and Ruri tried to be as quiet as possible, having three people in her head hardly allowed for peace and quiet. But in this void she couldn’t hear any of their voices, which unnerved her. As she continued to float a man started to come into focus, she felt her stomach twist into a knot as she saw his green and silver hair. Yuzu looked through her pockets for her duel disk as Zarc got closer, after minutes of searching she gave up looking as Zarc sat right in front of her. She instead raised her fists to defend herself in case he did something while he gave a mild smile when he saw her.

“What are you doing?” Zarc said with an amused tone. 

“Defending myself in case you do something.” Yuzu calmly replied as Zarc’s smile grew a bit.

“I would say I’m offended but you really have every right to be nervous.” Zarc said as his amused smile turned into a sad one, shocking Yuzu.

While Yuzu had heard from Yuya and Reiji that Zarc had given up on destroying reality, she had trouble believing it. Especially since the last time she saw him, he had taken over Yuya’s body, turning it into a draconian monster and was obsessed with killing everyone. But the more she looked at Zarc, the less she saw the devil that she had faced before and more someone who was just lost. And despite her caution, Yuzu just couldn’t leave someone like that alone even if he was the cause of their troubles.

“Zarc .... where are we?” Yuzu carefully asked as she tried to float away from him as much as possible but he could still hear her.

“In your dreams.” Zarc answered as he continued to stare down.

“Dreams? Is this even real?” Yuzu asked if she wondered what she ate. 

“Huh?” Zarc said as he lifted his head, startled. “Oh!  Wait, no, while we are in your dreams, our meeting is undeniably real. While I don’t have the full extent of my powers as the Supreme King Dragon, I can still visit people’s dreams when I want.” 

“Visit? Have you used this power before ..” Yuzu tensed as she felt her fists tighten.

Zarc started to smile again once he heard her. “Don’t worry, this is the first time I’ve used this power. I haven’t used this to torment Yuya.”

Yuzu gave a sigh of relief as Zarc start to laugh. “You really love him don’t you?”

Yuzu turned to face Zarc as her eyes were wide open. “What are you talking about?”

“Well I mean the very first thing that popped into your mind when I told you about this power was if Yuya was safe.” Zarc said as he gave a mischievous smile.

“I JUST DON’T WANT YOU TO MESS WITH MY BEST FRIEND!!!” Yuzu screamed with all her might as Zarc’s hair moved a bit from her shouts.

“Yuya’s a lucky guy either way.” Zarc said as he gave a sad smile as Yuzu’s eyes widened in shock. The more she saw Zarc’s smile, the more nostalgic it seemed as she remembered the countless times Yuya had given a similar smile when he tried to pretend things were fine when they obviously weren’t.  

Yuzu shuffled awkwardly as she couldn’t find the words to say. After a few minutes of silence, she killed the silence with a question. “Zarc ...... why did you decide to visit me?”  

This time Zarc shuffled awkwardly as he kept silent before finally speaking. “I want you to tell me about Yuya.”

“what?” Yuzu asked.

“It’s hard to explain.” Zarc said embarrassed as he scratched his head.

“We have all night. Try.” Yuzu stated as she starred down Zarc.

Zarc sighed. “My dream is ... was to have a duel where the audience, my opponent and even our monsters ... everyone would enjoy. A duel that would make them all smile from the bottom of their hearts ....” Zarc said as his voiced started to trail off. “But we all know how that ended up.” Zarc finished as he gave a cheerful smile. Too cheerful. “But Yuya ... he was able to do it. And I ...”

“You want to know why ... don’t you?” Yuzu finished Zarc’s sentence with sympathy in her voice.

“Bingo.”

“But why me?” Yuzu asked which confused Zarc. “Why didn’t you just ask Yuya?” Yuzu finished. 

Zarc gave a smile. “Yuya probably doesn’t fully know why he succeed when I failed. But you would, you’re the person that understands him most.”

Yuzu felt her face heat up once she heard his words. “what are you ...”

“while teasing you about Yuya would be fun, that will have to wait.” Zarc said with a smug smile.

“HAHAHA“ Yuzu sarcastically said. She then took a deep breath to calm herself before she answered. ”What do you want to know then.”

“Ray said that Yuya was my desire to make people smile given form. Does that mean ... Does that mean Yuya was always kind, was he always pure?” Zarc asked with urgency in his voice that Yuzu could guess why.

“If you’re asking if Yuya was always happy-go-lucky. The answer is sadly no.” Yuzu sadly stated as the memories flowed back. “After Yusho disappeared, Yuya ... was rarely happy. He really missed Yusho while everyone called Yusho a coward or insulted him, calling him a son of a coward. Yuya pretended to be fine, always smiling, always laughing ... But it was obvious that he was always crying inside.”

“This happened for three years?” Zarc asked, horrified. 

Yuzu sadly nodded her head in response.

Zarc’s expression worsened before he shook his head. “What about rage? Yuya never felt mad RIGHT?!” Zarc asked with a shocking intensity that scared Yuzu a bit.

“Yuya got mad plenty.” Yuzu calmly said as she felt her frustration rising.  

“no but ..” 

“You of all people should know this! It was because Yuya could get mad that you could take over his body!” Yuzu yelled as Zarc starred at her, eyes widened.

“If people were hurt, if people mocked him, if people who were important to him were in danger. Yuya would and did get mad. Yuya wasn’t perfect, he wasn’t an angel. He was just a person that wanted to make everyone happy. So please stop trying to simplify him as one!” Yuzu yelled as she defended Yuya.

“Then why?” Zarc said before he clenched his jaw shut. 

“What?”

“WHY DID HE SUCCEED THEN?!” Zarc roared. “How did Yuya succeed when I failed?! What did I do wrong? What did he do right?! If Yuya wasn’t a saint, then how could he keep fighting despite the pain, and failure when I cracked. Does that mean that if I kept going. I could have succeeded.” Zarc monologued as he buried his face in his hands. 

Yuzu stared in shocked at Zarc. She stared as the Demon Duelists, the man that had stolen Yuya’s body, the man that nearly destroyed all of reality seemed to shrink into a little boy. Unable to say a thing, Yuzu continued to watch as Zarc remained silent.

“I ... I don’t hate Yuya for his success.” Zarc struggle to say behind his hands which caught Yuzu’s attention. “I really don’t hate Yuya. I’m actually proud and happy that Yuya succeed, that he can make everyone happy with his dueling. ..... But the more I think about his success, I can’t help but feel this pain in my chest at my failure. ..... I can’t help but wonder if I did something wrong and ... that hurts.”

“Zarc ... “Yuzu said full of sympathy.  “but would you feel better if you learned that you could have never succeed. That your dream could only be done by a saint, that you were doomed to failure?” Yuzu asked.

“Yes! ... no. ... I don’t .... I don’t know!” Zarc yelled as he threw his hands to the side.

“Zarc .....” Yuzu said fully of worry as she started to reach out for him.

“I know that this is all  .. pointless.” Zarc said as felt his nails digging into his palms. “This visit, these questions! It’s all just self-satisfaction. Nothing I do matters anymore. Even if I learn why I failed, how is that going to change past. I still went mad and tried to kill everyone.” Zarc gave a small smile before he did air quotes as he said “tried” again. “I succeed. Ray might have stopped me but in the end, my rampage caused the end of the original dimension and everyone that lived there.”

“Leo survived.” Yuzu said hopefully.

Zarc’s face twisted into a scowl. “Don’t kick me when I’m down, Yuzu.”

“Sorry., I wasn’t thinking.” Yuzu apologized as she nervously scratched her face.

“The people that I wanted to entertain and laugh with .... By my own hands, I made their lives a living hell filled with fear and tears before I erased them from existence.” Zarc finished as his head fell.

“Zarc ...” Yuzu said as he touched his shoulder.

“The worse part of it is I can never make up for it. I can’t try again, that would mean stealing Reira’s body. But is just living my life knowing that I fucked up so badly that I became the exact opposite of what I wanted enough? Is that a fit punishment?! I erased millions from existence and my punishment is just guilt? How is that FAIR?!!!!” Zarc screamed as he stood up for the first time as Yuzu floated backwards. “What should I do?” Zarc said as tears started to fall.   

As Yuzu silently stared at Zarc, she felt a slight pressure on her shoulder. She quickly turned her head as she saw a woman in her early twenties or late teens standing next to her. She had reddish hair styled in two huge pigtails at her sides and purple eyes. The more Yuzu looked at this woman, the more the woman’s face looked familiar, it was her face just older. Yuzu’s eyes widen as she realized she was starring at Ray. Ray smiled at Yuzu as if she could read her mind before she started walking towards Zarc.

“Zarc .... you don’t have to torment yourself.” Ray said with a soft tone.

Zarc immediately turned to Ray as his eyes widened in shock. “How did you ...?” He asked in confusion.

“I’m pretty sure I can do anything you can do.” Ray said with a small smile which made Zarc chuckle.

“Probably. You did kick my ass twice.” Zarc replied with his own small smile.

“Zarc, I heard everything. You don’t have to keep torment yourself.”

“Why not? Because of me, an entire dimension is gone.” Zarc somberly stated as he clenched his fist in regret. 

“It wasn’t entirely your fault. You didn’t split the dimensions into four. I did.” Ray countered. 

“That was to stop me.” Zarc shook his head in response.

“No matter my intentions, I still caused the Original Dimension to split into Standard, Fusion, Synchro and Xyz. This isn’t your fault alone.” Ray said softly.

“It was my rampage that start it. All because I fell to peer pressure.” Zarc said bitterly.

Ray gave a small smile. “And because of my desire for my dad to live. He almost restarted the apocalypse.”

Zarc and Yuzu looked in shock at Ray’s word.

“What do you mean?” Yuzu asked confused. 

“When reality was being split, I kept my dad alive. Instead of trying to saving reality or as many people as possible ... I just kept my dad safe. And because of that .... He started the Arc Area Project that nearly destroyed all of reality.” Ray answered with a bitter-sweet tone.

“That’s not on you. You didn’t mean for it.” Zarc countered. “I wanted to kill everyone! You wanted to save them!” 

“Does it matter? I still fucked up.” Ray finished which left Zarc speechless. “But I don’t think everything that happened was all bad though.” Ray continued as she patted Yuzu’s head which left Yuzu speechless.

“What are you....?” Zarc asked.

“I won’t deny what you did was wrong but in the end all of reality is now in peace. The duel spirits included.” Ray looked at Yuzu as her face softened.

“That was never my intention! I tried to kill everyone!” Zarc argued. 

“Because we drove you to that.” Ray again countered. “Zarc, you snapped because our dimension, because we wanted more blood-lust. You becoming Supreme King Dragon, the devil, isn’t all your fault. Like my baby brother said, It’s all of humanity’s fault that you were created.” 

Zarc lowered his head so his eyes couldn’t be seen. “Why?” he mumbled.

“Huh?” Ray asked.

“Why are you being so nice to me. I ... I stole everything from you. Your future, your family, ... your life.” Zarc asked as he balled his hands at his side into fists.

Ray give a small smile as she stared at Yuzu. “Because I wondered if I messed up too.” 

Zarc lifted his head to look at Ray in confusion.

“Zarc ... before you had your accident, before you had your fame, I was a huge fan of yours. I wanted to duel you but after your accident and your change in dueling style ... I avoided you. I avoided you when you most needed help. I thought I couldn’t do anything but .... after seeing what Yuzu did .. I couldn’t help but wonder if I had tried to reach you, if I didn’t leave you alone ... maybe you would never have become the Supreme King Dragon. Maybe things would be different because no matter who you are or become, you always wanted to make everyone happy. And I ignored it till it was too late.” Ray said with regret.

“What should I do then?” Zarc asked.

“Wait.”

“Huh?”

“Zarc, while humanity is doing fine now. That doesn’t mean it’ll always be like this. When humanity starts to take the wrong path, show them the errors of their way,” Ray said with a smile. Ray then paused as she mulled something over and added "PEACEFULLY!” forcefully at the end which made Zarc laugh.

“So I’m just going to wait inside of Reira in the odd chance that humanity fucks up again as I review my mistakes?” Zarc said with a sarcastic tone.

“Yep.” Ray instantly said.

“But that’s pretty boring” Zarc said with a fake whiny tone.

“You’re the one that wanted punishment.” Ray said as she raised an eyebrow.

“Hahhahaha. That is true. I guess this is fitting enough.” Zarc said with a smile, a genuine smile that made Yuzu smile too. “Yuzu, thanks for listening to me bitch and moan.” Zarc said as he focused on Yuzu.

“No problem. Just don’t make a habit of it.” Yuzu said with a smile.

“At least once more. I still have to tease you over Yuya.” Zarc said with a cheeky smile.

“DON’T YOU DARE!” Yuzu roared which made Zarc and Ray laugh.

“But seriously .... Look after him will you?” Zarc said a serious tone which shocked Yuzu to silence. Unable to say anything, she simply nodded as Zarc smiled in return. 

Zarc then looked at Ray once more. “Thank you, Ray. As odd as this is. I’m glad you’re my archenemy. Couldn’t have asked for a hotter one.” Zarc said with a big smile as he disappeared before Ray, with a face as red as her hair, tried to yell at him.  

Yuzu felt a soft palm on her head as she realized that Ray had again patted her head.

“Thank you for talking to him, Yuzu.” 

Yuzu shook her head. “No I didn’t help much. But I’m glad that he’s at peace. I think he deserves it.”

Ray smiled. “I think so too.”

The Nature Queen

An alternate, and hopefully slightly more interesting, version of the final blow to Zarc in episode 140.

Zarc smiled widely with his fanged mouth.

«At the end, I will nail your coffin with my own hand.»

His eyes widened as he thrust his human form's right hand forward.

«I attack "DD Magical Savant Schrodinger"!» he yelled as his dragon form's left fist lunged forward, inbound for a powerful landing on the devastated balcony where Reiji was laying on the ground, still not recovered from the beatdown his "High King Executives" took from the "Supreme King Servant Dragons".

Then a twister full of leaves covered him and a high-pitched voice screamed.

«BROTHER!»

A monotone "Intrusion Penality: 2000 points" echoed as Reira's Duel Disk flared up.

And a loud crash signed the impact of the fist of "Supreme King Dragon Zarc".

Everyone gasped as a Reiji's scarf disintegrated among the debris... along with the log it was tied to.

From the leafy winds, the blue ninja emerged holding Reiji and Leo.

«Tsukikage!» said Shingo happily. «He came back!» added Crow.

«That's...!» gasped Tatsuya.

Everyone looked at the weird portal screen thing. Reira was standing before Zarc, Duel Disk active and hand drawn. «Reira!»

«Reira! What are you doing?» yelled Reiji concerned.

From the Leo Corporation's HQ, Himika also said the kid's name.

Reira hid the eyes under his cap. «I... I'm not Reira.»

The kid then threw away the cap and the jacket, and long lavender hair fell down.

«I'm Ray!» the kid declared as an image of the older woman flickered next to them.

«Ray?» asked Reiji confused.

«What?!» cried Leo.

«Ray?» parroted Zarc, his eyes twitching.

«If you come back, I will come back.» affirmed Reira. «If you try to destroy the world, I will protect it!» Ray voice gradually overlapped, until she flickered next to the child again at the last words.

The glowing golden spirit form of Ray then appeared over Reira, before her Original Dimension's Duel Disk materializing on her left arm, and her head gained its true colors.

«My turn!» yelled both as Ray drew a card from her Deck.

The two Akaba siblings held up their right arms, Ray having two yellow-colored cards between her fingers, Normal Monsters. Zarc had an heart attack when he squinted and noticed... the lower half was Magic-colored!

«With the Scale 0, "Nature Queen Hikari", and the Scale 13, "Nature Queen Yami", we set the Pendulum Scale!» Ray slapped the cards over her Duel Disk, but the iridescent word "PENDULUM" appered over Reira's as well.

Two young girls ascended to the sky inside blue columns of light. The Scale 0 wore a pretty white dress and had long brown and red hair, looking like Ray, while the Scale 13 resembled a female Zarc with short, upward-spiked white hair, and wore a tattered black dress.

«W-what? How!?» stuttered the demonic man.

«With this, we can Summon any monsters with Levels between 1 and 12!» explained the siblings. «Swing, Pendulum of cosmos! Bring eternal peace to the unnatural world!» chanted both. «Pendulum Summon! Appear, our harbinger of salvation!» A portal opened between the two Scales, and a single pink stream came out.

The light split into four, of which three changed color: green, indigo, and yellow. A pillar of light shoot up to the sky, piercing the clouds.

«Envoy of Mother Earth, the all-knowing disciple with the mission to protect the universe with the powers of nature!»

The pillar died down, and a figure appeared between the four colored light: a heavenly being wearing a rainbow vest, with long flowing hair colored white, and feathery wings folded behind the back. «"Biograph Angel"!»

«Bio... graph... angel...?» growled Zarc. «No... no! You can't!»

Ray and Reira just glared back at him. «The effect of "Biograph Angel". We can Release this card, and banish the Four Envoys of Nature from our Deck and Extra Deck!»

«NO!» screamed the demon, slamming his hands down. Meanwhile, the angelic monster clasped her hands and appeared to start praying.

The siblings threw their right arms up. «"Lyrical Luscinia - Assembly Nightingale"! "Wind Witch - Winter Bell"! "Moonlight Cat Dancer"! "Melodious Maestra - Prodigy Mozart"!»

The four monsters appeared over them as thet were named, all glaring with intense hate at the dark lord of dragons. The angry faces of the bracelet girls briefly fickered over their respective ace.

«Become the force that purifies the evil out of hearts!»

Pillars of colored light enveloped the four monsters, before they moved towards each other and merged. Then, Ray spread her arms and detached from Reira, who fell on their knees. As she floated towards the pillar, she closed her eyes and kept chanting.

«The sovereign of the natural world, the fighter for the freedom from jet-black darkness' clutches for all dimensions! Please take my form, and save us all from sin!»

Ray's body touched the light, before being abrutly swallowed. Immediately the pillar expanded with a deep rumble, and a second, horizontal pillar burst out the sides of the other, making it look like a cross.

Two words echoed in the astonished silence: «INTEGRATION SUMMON!»

Slowly, the horizontal light widened, taking shape of wings. Enormous, yellow, feathery wings. A pink circle formed around the main pillar, and the light finally died down.

A enormous woman was towering before Zarc. Besides the yellow wings and the pink halo, the monster wore a long green dress with indigo fur. Ray's glowing body merged with the monster's at the neck crook of the latter, just like with Zarc.

«Zarc!» a voice called out. «Here I am! Your ultimate opponent: an equivalent!»

Queen of All Nature - Ray ATK 3900 LV 12

Zarc was trembling in fury. «YOU BITCH! HOW DARE YOU USE THE SAME WEAPON I MADE TO FIGHT YOU?! HOW DARE YOU STEAL MY OWN EXCLUSIVE, INTEGRATION SUMMON?!»

Ray didn't bat an eye from her place. «I will stop you, no what what I have to do.»

Zarc pointed a claw to her. «Stop me? In your worthless dreams! You even have less ATK than myself, proof that no one can surpass me!»

Ray's expression softened for some reason. «ATK isn't everything. Don't worry, your pain is finally coming to an end.»

Zarc scowled in confusion. «What are you saying?»

Ray held up her hand towards the dragon as a window popped up in front of her, showing four Magic Cards in the Graveyard. «The Natural Energy Cards... they did stop you... but the price was too high. They shattered the entire world like this, and they caused immense pain and suffering... so I will undo their damage. I'll sacrifice them to find another way!»

«Sacrifice them?!» cried Leo shocked.

Her held hand closed in a fist. «That's right. This new form of mine isn't just the embodiment of my desire to stop you. It is also the combination of my fragments' will to save your fragments!»

«Our fragments?» murmured Zarc.

«My effect activates! By banishing a nature card from the Graveyard, I can apply its effect!» «WHAT?!»

«Go, Ruri!» yelled Ray as the Xyz fragment flickered next to her. «We banish "En Birds"!» the two girls said, «By its effect, all Xyz Monsters on the field, in the Graveyard, and that are banished are treated as Normal Monsters, and their effects are negated!»

"En Birds", floating in the purple void, exploded into yellow particles, which erupted out from a portal that opened before Ray, quickly turning into bird shapes and enveloping "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" and "Supreme King Servant Dragon Dark Rebellion". At the same time, the same two cards flashed on Zarc's Duel Disk; as the former turned into a yellow card and lost its effect and the "Xyz / Effect" part of the type line, and the latter was stripped of the black fraction of the background and the "Xyz" subtype.

«Xyz Monsters are...» whispered Kaito. «...turned into Normal Monster?» finished Shun.

«Yuto!» cried Ruri's spirit clasping her hand. «I'm begging you, awake yourself! Just like you fought Academia, you can fight Zarc! I know you can, because you are a valiant dark knight just like the "Phantom Knights"! Please! Do it for our home, for my brother!» A tear fell from her eye. «Do it for me...»

Suddenly Zarc clutched his head and screamed as Yuto's spirit struggled to reach out. «NO! You stay doooooowwwwn!» slurred the demon as Yuto emerged. «Ruri...!» he sobbed as he was immediately pulled back.

Ray tched as Ruri vanished. «This is only the beginning. Rin!» The Synchro fragment appeared next to Ray and both raised their arms. «We banish "En Winds"!» The card exploded into green particle that erupted out the portal as a tornado, which went to ravage "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" and "Supreme King Servant Dragon Clear Wing". «All Synchro Monsters become Normal Monster, and their effects are negated!» Inside the winds, "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" roared as its card's white background and "Synchro" subtype vanished, along with the one of "Clear Wing" becoming yellow and losing its effects and "Synchro / Effect".

«The "Supreme King Dragon" that made us suffer...» said Crow. «...is becoming powerless!» murmured Jack, still down.

Zarc screamed in pain again as Rin started speaking. «Yugo, you gigantic goof! How could you let youself be taken over like that! Open your eyes and fight Zarc! We two still... have a... dream, right? We still have to win the Friendship Cup... I won't ever let you use... your possession as an excuse... got it?!» yelled the girl, her voice gradually breaking down.

Yugo tried desperately to reach out as well. «Riiin! Riiiiiiin! I'm here, I'm he...» he barely managed to get ot before he was absorbed again. «Stop it!» growled Zarc.

«Never!» growled back Ray. «Get on it, Selena!» The ponytailed Fusionist took Rin's place. «We banish "En Moon"!» The Magic in question burst into violet particles, which formed a beam that went to pierce the last clouds and reveal the full moon hanging over the teared remains of Earth. «All Fusion Monsters become Normal Monsters, and their effects are negated!» The girls added as "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" and "Supreme King Servant Dragon Starve Venom" howled in the blueish-gray lighting. The card of "Starve Venom" became yellow and lost "Fusion / Effect", and the one of "Zarc" finally was taken away the violet background and the "Fusion" subtype, making it looking like a common Effect Pendulum Monster for a second before the monster effect also vanished and the upper part of the background faded from orange to yellow too.

«With this, the Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz aspects of the "Supreme King Dragon" are removed!» exclaimed Edo, smiling along with Sora.

Selena's spirit cupped her hands around her mouth. «Hey Yuri, you little shit! I know you're in there! Just because we never became friend don't you think I'm not gonna come and kick your ass out of that thing! What the hell do you think you gain not fighting Zarc?! You just insult your own honor! A true elite Academia student would never allow themselves to be used as a pet like that!»

Zarc screamed even louder as Yuri's spirit came out, his face shadowed. «Selena, eh?» he smiled creepily. «Fine then. You asked for it, now I'll gonna make you eat those words!» he looked up at her, tears in his eyes. «You'll better make up for your missed responsibilities, my friend...» he whispered before being dragged back inside Zarc's body. «You bastard!» he ranted as he clutched his body, feeling it burn due to the souls raging inside.

«This is the end for you!» As she said that, Ray's voice overlapped with Yuzu's, who appeared next to her too. «We banish "En Flowers"!» The last Magic Card exploded into a pink wave that washed over the entire zone, making flowers blossom on every patch of green.

«I'm getting shivers!» sang Futoshi as he, Ayu, Tatsuya, and Shuzo looked on awed.

«"En Flowers" negates again the effects of all monsters on the field, and destroys them!» explained Ray and Yuzu as Zarc's monsters were enveloped by iridescent lights, «Then, for each of those cards sent to the GY, you take 600 points of damage!»

«With this...!» murmured Reiji with a smile. «Beautiful.» simply said Gongenzaka, at loss of other words.

Ray held up her right arm, and the four bracelets appeared on her forearm. The four girls then flickered arond her, also wearing their own bracelets. After a few seconds however, the bracelets shattered into faint whisps of light. The "Supreme King Servant Dragons" roared as they quickly suffered the same fate.

«DAMN YOUUUUUUUUUU!»

Everyone shielded their faces of "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" melted into a whirlwind of darkness. Quickly, the vortex died down, deposing Zarc on the ground.

«Yuya!» cried Reira, getting up under the feet of "Queen of All Nature - Ray". «I... AM NOT... YUYA!» he snarled, still holding onto his own body in pain.

«No, you are Yuya!» said Reiji, and Zarc turned to glare at him. «And you are Zarc, but also Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri. Your heart was constantly swinging. Yes, just like a pendulum!» he added, holding up Yuya's pendant for emphasis.

«Pendulum...» wheezed Zarc, scowling.

«The four cards my dad made were cards that naturally returned all power into a pure existence.» talked the five girls in unison. «That's how Pendulum was born! Pendulum cannot be swung in the presence of only malice. It should be inside of you, the existence of Sakaki Yuya, who purely pursued smiles!»

«Wrong! This is my will...» growled Zarc.

Suddenly, Yuzu floated down in front of him. «I believe in Yuya!» The words made Zarc recoil.

Yuya was holding his head in pain, surrouded by his counterparts in a dark void. «Yuzu!»

«You're not a demon!» urged the Standard girl. «You're a person who gives happinessand smiles to people around the world!»

«Shut up! What I give is fear!» «Stop it! What am I saying?»

«My wish is, for the people who forced me to fight and pretended to be a spectator to taste real fear!» yelled Zarc. «Wrong! That's not true!» murmured Yuya inside.

«Screw smiles! I...» «You came to save me!» began again Yuzu. «No matter how many times we were separated, you chased me!» Zarc gasped. «Because you were there, I got stronger!» Shu hung her head down. «I could never forget to smile.»

«Yuya, respond! To everyone's thoughts!» she cried, and then her expression softened. «And then let's go home together. Tou our homedown.»

Suddenly Zarc's yellow eyes stopped glowing and faded into red.

«Yes, last turn, Yuya!» yelled Reiji, chucking the pendant. Time seemed to slow down for Yuya as he stared at the tricket flying towards him.

He saw the Pendulum swinging. He was his dad. «I can't do anything if I'm scared and frustared.» chanted Yusho as he held two halves of a torn card. «If you want to win do it with courage.» he added as he pulled together the pieces of "Smile World".

«I'm back!» said Yuya, grabbing the pendulum. However, his face started warping, and the eyes went back to yellow. «Pendulum Monsters are immortal! Even if destroyed, they will revive again and again! Just like me!» slurred Zarc with a distorted voice, trying to reach for his Deck. «We won't let it! We will put an end to what we've done!» cried together Yuya, Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri; their spirits materializing around Zarc and holding him in place with all their forces. «You bastards, you're just myselves!» snarled Zarc, trying in vain to push them away. His eyes started to roll widly. «W-what are you doing? Stop it!»

«We've decided. We will not become a demon anymore!» chanted the four boys as one. «Now! Do it, Yuzu/Ruri/Rin/Selena!» the all cried, each boy finishing with the name of their corresponding girl. Ray nodded. «I attack Zarc directly!»

The goddess spread her arms and started chanting, and the four energies gathered again to envelop Zarc and his fragments, who all started screaming.

«Damn you!» wheezed Zarc, soffucated by the four grips. «I will... absolutely...»

The shape of "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" appeared over him, eternally frozen in a silent roar as the shapes of the four "Supreme King Servant Dragons" were pulled out, and gradually lost their green bands as everything started shaking.

«Without the natural cards, the world is about to be reset to its former state!» murmured Leo. «Then Zarc will reincarnate in the united dimension!» whispered Reiji.

«I won't let it happen!» cried suddenly Reira getting up. «I will seal Zarc!»

As the kid clasped his hands, Zarc screamed and a black spirit flew out his mouth and rammed Reira, who also started screaming.

Meanwhile, the four boys were sucked inside the empty body, and Ray's Integration monster disintegrated as her fragments were also forced back into her.

Yuzu smiled as Yuya went off to answer his father's challenge. However, feeling something in her pocket where she put her Deck, she went to check her cands, and was surprised to see on the top a monster she had never seen before.

Meanwhile, in Yuzu's mind, Ray also gave off a slight smile and closed her eyes as she drifted down, deciding to give her fragments some time alone.

How to Handle a Nico: How to Remember a Nico

Author’s Note: I originally wrote Nico misunderstanding a word Maki uses by assuming it to have been a similar sounding word in English, but then I remembered that they would be speaking in Japanese, not English. I thus consulted the not-so-all-knowing Google Translate for something kind of similar. Honestly, if someone knows a better fit, please let me know.

I also used a style I have been using for ages in my D&D story to depict words being spoken in a language other than the default for the scene. In this case, obviously, the default is Japanese, so anything in English will be enclosed in less-than/greater-than brackets. Romaji is used to depict some names, because reasons. And for lack of a better method, I slapped the romaji for the misunderstood words in parentheses the first time it comes up. I may come back and edit things later, if a better way of conveying the idea comes to me.

Maki shook her head and smiled to herself as she left the bank of rhythm and dance games. She wasn’t surprised in the least that Nico had challenged Honoka to a rematch and even less that that their senior had won. The older girl had dragged her along for several “secret” training sessions over the past few months. At this point, Maki felt confident that even she could outperform the leader of their group, though she held far less desire to prove it than her prideful senior.

And the other two third-years were little better, as they were currently engaged in a heated table hockey battle while Kotori looked on in bewilderment. Perhaps it was time to take a short break from the group. Shaking her head again, Maki turned the corner around a bank of consoles and… wait…

Something caught Maki’s eye. Amid the myriad of colorful and adorable plushies being lit by the flashing and beckoning lights of the UFO catchers, one lone stuffed toy seemed to beckon her. Heeding the call, Maki pulled a few tokens from her pocket and slipped one into the machine. She would have that plushie if it took every token she had.

“Say, where’s Maki-chan?” Nico looked around for the redhead as the group started to gather so they could head to their next destination.

“I think I saw her over by the UFO catchers, nya.” Rin tipped her chin in the general direction.

“Why don’t you go get her, Nicocchi?” Nozomi smirked.

“I…” Nico glared at the purple-haired girl. “I was just about to do that. The No. 1 Idol in the Universe doesn’t don’t need to be told what to do.” And with that, she marched off.

Maki let out a frustrated growl as, once again, her intended target slipped from the claw’s grasp.

“Wha’cha doin’, Maki-chan?” a voice asked from behind her. “We’re getting ready to head out.”

“Buweeeh?” The redhead, stumbled back from the machine, dropping the token she was about to use.

“You know you picked one of the more infamously difficult machines, right?” Nico said, stooping to retrieve the lost token.

“I… I…” Maki sputtered.

“It’s worth it, though,” the twintailed girl stood back up, “if you can get something; the prizes are pretty high quality for an arcade game.” She turned to the machine. “Which one did you want?”

“Uhm…” the redhead’s cheeks started to match her hair.

Why was Maki acting so flustered over a plushie in a UFO catcher? Nico scanned the prizes. Wait… her eyes settled on one in particular. No, it couldn’t really be that obvious, could it? Well, there was only one way to find out. A smirk formed on Nico’s lips.

“Did Maki-chan want that panda, hmm?” the older girl cooed.

“…” The younger girl cast her gaze down.

“Did Maki-chan want that panda ‘cause it reminded her of Nico-nii’s adorable costume?”

“W-what? No!” Maki denied suddenly, looking up, though still blushing.

“Awwww! Maki-chan’s being dishonest!” Nico’s voice slipped up almost a full octave.

“W-wha-what the heck?” the habitual phrase was sputtered. “I don’t get you!”

“She wants something to remind her of Nico-nii ‘cause she loves her so~ much!” the twin-tailed girl was having far too much fun to stop.

“I… I… don’t!” Maki’s voice rose a little. Her own words registered in her mind and she quickly backpedaled. “I mean, I don’t want the panda!” She corrected. “I, uhm… wanted…”

“You wanted…?” Nico pressed, not willing to give up.

“Never mind!”

Oops… maybe pushed too far?

“I’m going to find the others.” Maki declared before stomping off.

Yes, definitely pushed too far, again. Nico glanced at the token still in her hand. However…

“Maki-chan!” Honoka called, spotting the first-year. “Over here!” She waved excitedly.

“Did Nico-chan find you?” Hanayo asked as the redhead approached.

“Hmph!” Maki responded, turning her head to the side.

“Yup, she did.” Nozomi chuckled, earning a glare from the younger girl.

“Where is Nico-chan, nya?” Rin held a hand over her brow and scanned the area.

Umi sighed. “Are we going to have to go find her, now?”

“I’m right here.” Nico said, waltzing up.

“Alright then,” Eli looked at her watch. “The next train should be here soon. If we hurry, we can make it.”

Maki took a seat by the window and stared out of it, waiting for the train to start moving. “Wha?” She flinched as something was placed on top of her head. Something white and black fell off, bounced off the window and landed in her lap. She stared at the object and blinked. It was the stuffed panda she had failed to retrieve from the machine earlier. Maki turned towards the occupant of the seat beside her. “Nico-chan… what…?”

“That’s the one you wanted, right?” Nico displayed a toothy smile.

“Yeah… but… you didn’t have to…”

“Maki-chan, you should know by now Nico doesn’t do things because she has to, she does things because she wants to.”

“Th-thank you…”

“And look!” Nico pulled another plushie out of her bag. “She has a match!”

Maki blinked. “A leopard?”

“Yup! I’m keeping this one to remind me of you.”

The redhead felt heat rise to her cheeks. She nervously glanced about the car.

“Nobody is watching, Maki-chan, geez.” Nico rolled her eyes. “Anyway, as I was going to say, with these two by our sides, neither of us have to worry about being lonely, even if we don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like.”

“…” Maki stared at the stuffed panda in her hands. Nico had all but read her mind with her reasons for wanting the panda. Of course, there was also the fact that it was extremely cute in its own right.

“Hrm… I think I’ll name her Sukāretto.” The raven-haired girl continued, ignoring the other girl’s silence.

Maki raised an eyebrow. “But there’s nothing red about her.” She pointed out.

“But I got her to remind me of you.” Nico rolled her eyes. “Would you prefer I call her Tsundere Princess?”

“I’m not a tsundere!” the redhead protested, turning away.

“Case in point.”

“Fine, I’m going to call my panda Idiot Supreme.”

“Ms. High and Mighty.” The older girl held up her leopard.

“Ms. Overbearing Idol.” The younger girl held up her panda.

“<Richy McRichface.>” Nico said in English.

“<McRichface?>” Maki couldn’t help but chuckle.

“<Richy McRichface.>” Nico repeated, starting to laugh as well.

“Isn’t Richy a guy’s name?”

“Maybe…” the twin-tailed girl shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Sukāretto is fine, I guess.” Maki conceded, starting to twirl strands of the toy’s namesake.

Nico grinned. “So what are you actually going to name yours?”

“Hmmm…” Maki pondered for a moment, her gaze flowing from Nico, to her leopard, to her own panda before drifting back to Nico again. “Maybe Sēburu?”

“What’s that?” Nico cocked her head to the side.

“Technically, it’s a small, weasel-like mammal.”

“Hey!”

“But, as its fur is considered quite luxurious, and is colored dark brown or black, its name was taken to mean black when used in heraldry.”

“Heraldry?”

“Crests, symbols and the like to identify nobles and groups of soldiers and such.” Maki chose to be over-simplistic in her explanation. “When you see black used in such things, it’s called <sable>.”

“So it’s a royal term?”

“Something like that, sure.”

“Royalty, huh?”  Nico turned the idea over in her head. “I like the sound of that. Roiyaru Sēburu. I think that would suit me well.”

“You mean her.” Maki indicated her panda.

“Yeah, sure, her as well,” Nico made dismissive motions, “but definitely me.”

Maki sighed.

“So what is the monsoon (monsūn) word for red?”

“Heraldry (Monshō).” Maki corrected.

“Well, that’s convenient.”

“No…” Maki shook her head. “It’s not monsoon, it’s heraldry.” She slowed her pronunciation for both words, to distinguish the difference. “And the word for red is <gules>, which would make her name Gūru.”

Nico wrinkled her nose. “Why does it have to be something that sounds so uncute?”

“It had something to do with throats, I think.”

“Definitely uncute.”

“And I doubt those who designed the system had cuteness in mind.”

“Cuteness should always be something kept in mind.”

Maki opened her mouth to retort, but thought better of it and continued with her original thought. “It’s that or <sanguine> for the color of blood, or Tanoshī.”

“Sukāretto is still cuter.” Nico decided, holding her plushie up for admiration. “Nōburu Sukāretto.” She paused. “I feel like I’ve heard that somewhere before… Maybe Hime Sukāretto, instead? Sukāretto Hime?”

“What’s wrong with just Sukāretto?” Maki asked.

“Well if yours is Roiyaru Sēburu, mine should follow suit, right?”

“I didn’t know I was adding Roiyaru to her name…”

“For everyday use, just Sēburu is fine.” Nico explained, as though it should have been obvious. “But in times of need, her title will be necessary.”

“’In times of need?’” Maki repeated skeptically.

“Like when her adorable princess is lonely, of course.”

“I’ll be fine. I won’t be lonely.”

“Exactly. Not with Roiyaru Sēburu standing guard!” Nico puffed out her chest with pride. “She’ll chase away all negative feelings and bad dreams with a mighty roar!” She held her hands up like claws to mimic the behavior. “Actually... do pandas roar?”

Maki laughed at her senior’s silly display. “I don’t know.”

“So there are things even Maki-chan doesn’t know?” Nico dramatized being taken aback.

“…” the redhead deadpanned a silent response.

“It’s just that you knew so much about monsoons and such.”

“Heraldry.”

“Yeah, that.”

“We were just studying European Medieval history, and the topic was only mentioned in passing.” Maki explained. “It sounded interesting so I read more about it on my own.”

“Why am I not surprised about you studying stuff more than what is covered in class?”

“I like to study.” A hint of defensiveness entered Maki’s voice.

“Yeah, I know.” Nico dismissed. “I won’t tease you… this time.” She smirked, earning a mild glare. “Anyway, all this talk about medieval stuff makes me want to watch a movie; maybe A Knight’s Tale.”

“I’d hardly call that a medieval movie.”

“Bah, you’re too stingy about that kind of stuff, Maki-chan.” Nico brushed off the comment. “It’s just a fun movie. The jousting scenes are awesome.” She moved her hand back and forth to mimic thrusting a lance. “What’s-his-name’s speeches are fun. The dresses are amazing; I wish I could own every costume Jocelyn wears. Though I do wish she had more screen time, they didn’t focus nearly enough on the romance.”

Maki scoffed. “You’re always commenting on the romance in everything we watch.”

“Says the girl who always comments about how things ‘don’t work that way’ and that Hollywood is just dramatizing things for effect.” Nico rebutted.

“Yes, but not everything needs to be about romance.”

“And why the heck not?”

“Because it’s silly. There are other important things in life besides romance.”

“Like studying?”

“Exactly.”

The raven-haired girl sighed overdramatically. “You’ll change your tune someday, Maki-chan.”

“I doubt it.” The redhead shrugged.

“Someday you’ll meet someone who makes you calm just by being near them, but can also make your heart race when you touch. Someone who you can’t help but smile when thinking about them, and you do so constantly. Someone who you look forward to seeing, even if you just saw them a few hours, or even just a few minutes ago. Someone who makes you feel…” the way I feel about you… “good.”

“Hmmm…” Maki hummed, glancing down at the stuffed panda she was holding. “Say… you weren’t too far behind me in joining the group. How did you get these two so fast?”

“That’s a secret.” Nico held a finger to her lips.

“Really?”

“Alright, fine, I’ll admit it.” The older girl grinned. “It’s because Nico is the No. 1 UFO Catcher in the Universe!” She held up her signature gesture.

“Idiot.”

“You like it.”

“Maybe…” Maki turned her attention to the scenery sliding swiftly past the window.

“Anyway, wake me up when we get to the station. I’m going to take a quick nap.”

“Alright…”

A few moments later, Maki’s heartrate jumped as something landed on her shoulder. A few loose strands of black wisped into her field of vision, though she didn’t really need to see them to know Nico was leaning against her. She couldn’t help the gentle smile that formed on her lips as her thoughts turned to adorable gift she had just received from her senior. The day was barely beginning and she had already had a lot of fun, but she was definitely looking forward to seeing what antics Nico and the others would perform next. But as excited as she was, she found that right now, on the train to their next destination, with Nico using her shoulder as a pillow, she was calm; she wouldn’t mind if the trip took another hour. There was no question in her mind that she felt very… good.

Author’s Note Continued: I honestly had the beginning and the end written but had no idea how to connect them. The original Word document was even titled “Arcade” as I had originally intended the entire scene to take place in the arcade.

This post got the gears in my mind spinning about one of my favorite parts of the NicoMaki ship; the teasing. I had also been thinking for a while about how I headcanon Maki to have a bit of an obsession with cute plushies that she kinda sorta keeps secret. And by "kinda sorta" I mean pretty much everyone finds out at some point. As such, a scene with Nico finding out is on my ever-growing list of scenes to write. And while I already have a scene, Promoshoot, with Nico giving Maki a plushie, using a Christmas themed toy felt like it might limit how I write when and how Nico finds out.

So I needed a new plushie. And with the gears already grinding about things Nico could tease Maki about, this scene came to mind; but as already stated, just the beginning and the end. It took me longer than I anticiapted to bridge the gap, but I think it kind of works now.

Lastly, this scene was also written as an entry in this givaway contest. However, as I am capable of being quite indecisive at times, I may finish another scene before the submission window closes and end up chosing that scene as my entry instead. Of course that is dependant on me acutally finishing another scene in that time, who who knows.
