For a while, I was involved in the booktok and Tik Tok writing communities, specifically parts of the community focused on more diverse books and authors. During this time, I noticed a reoccurring pattern when people were highlighting stories featuring disabled characters, or even promoting their own books, and that was how often people would say "I kind of forget they have [insert disability here] because they're such a badass."
The intention behind this statement is (usually) good, with people trying to show that their disabled characters are self-sufficient and don't fall into the tired old sad/helpless disabled person trope, however, you can - and very much should - do that without erasing your character's disability. If you find yourself forgetting your character is disabled, or your beta and pre-release readers are commenting about forgetting it, then there's a good chance that's exactly what you've done - and as a disabled person myself, if I see that statement being used in your marketing in particular, it's a giant red flag and a sure fire way to make sure I give the book in question a skip.
Remember, disabilities (especially major ones) are a part of your character's identity, and they're important regardless of the character's personal relationship with it. Even if your character doesn't specifically identify with the label of disabled or doesn't really care that much, it's should still be impacting their daily life, even in small ways. If you're finding yourself forgetting about a major part of your character's identity, it might be a good idea to check and make sure their disability is having an impact on the character.
I see this comment most often with amputee characters, and to me, it's a pretty consistently good indication that the author has treated their character's prosthetic as a cure rather than the mobility aid it is. It's far from unique to amputees, mind you (I talked about this a lot when I was discussing the character of Toph from Avatar), but it's when I tend to see it the most. Remember that mobility aids and other forms of assistive technology and assistive magic (if it's a fantasy story) are just that: they're aids, they assist, they shouldn't be cures.
Of course, this wasn't unique to Booktok, I've seen it on nearly every other social media site with a writing and book-focused community at some point, but Tik Tok was just where I spent the most time and it seems to be where I see the most people specifically gloating about it.

hi these are some of my sydcarmy headcanons:
* i love reading fics where they both realize they like each other and then start furiously making out but. also. what if carmy asks syd out and she’s a little skeptical about it at first? but she agrees to go on the date anyway — and carmy takes her out to a little fancy joint by the river and is so nervous about messing up that his hands are so so so shaky and he can’t even pour the wine into their glasses right. so he fumbles through some half apology half speech about how he’s just really happy she’s here and how he really really really likes her and how he’s honestly glad that she was willing to give him a chance and how he’s very anxious because she looks so pretty in that dress she’s wearing. and syd realizes that, holy shit, he really does like her — and she thinks she really likes him too. so they wine and they dine and when the night is over he takes her home, walks her up to her door, and doesn’t kiss her because he says that’s something he’d like to do on the third date, if she’ll have him. and of course, she says yes, she would like to go on more dates with him — she says yes like he just proposed to her, because they’re so intense about everything they do.
* i think that syd and carmy, carmy especially, are the type of people to be vaguely private about their relationship. like, it’s very obvious that they are together, they won’t hide it — if you see them in person, if you see the way they look at each other, move with each other, the way they talk to each other, you will know that they’re together. they will casually mention each other in interviews and articles, refer to the other as their partner. but they will not post a million pictures of each other on social media, they are not that couple. there will be the occasional, slightly vague post — a picture of carmy in his chef whites, back turned to the camera, posted to syd’s instagram account to congratulate him on The Bear’s fifth year of service. A congratulations to chef sydney adamu on her james beard nomination tweeted to carmy’s twitter account. and if they ever do attain that level of fame, there will be the occasional pap shot of them walking back from a deli, or a farmer’s market (in true JAW fashion). but unless you’re close to them you’ll only see that surface level to their relationship
* i know that they’re roughly the same height but in my head sydney is just slightly taller than carmy, just by a few inches, nothing too big. carmy is not the type of person that cares about height, it’s not a big insecurity of his, and deep down, he finds the similarity in height between him and syd to be quite grounding and comforting. he likes being able to hug her and comfortably put his chin on her shoulder. he likes how it doesn’t feel awkward when they put their arms around each other, and how neither of them have to bend down or get on their toes to kiss each other.
* another thing i absolutely love in fics — when syd just gets the opportunity to talk about her hair. i don’t think carmy is ignorant, but realistically, he does not know about, for instance, the difference between 2b and 4c hair (as in, the labels) and how to care for 4c hair, which (i’m pretty sure) syd has. like, i think hair care would be such an important aspect of their relationship — syd teaches him about protective styles, tells him why she sleeps with a satin scarf wrapped around her braids, what silk presses are and why she has to spend a good twenty minutes wrapping it up each night before she goes to bed. and carmy helps her take her braids out, because four hands are faster than two, he helps her put twists in, helps her blow dry and comb it out the night before her next appointment. and sixth months into their relationship, he becomes a walking glossary — he will tell you what leave-in conditioner is, what edge control is for, why you shouldn’t buy cantu products, the textural difference between synthetic and human hair. and secretly, he thinks to himself, this will also be useful information for him to know if he and syd ever have kids one day because yes — carmy doesn’t do things halfway and he is already thinking that far ahead.

The resurgence of 90s ‘Heroin Chic’

Characterised by pale white skin, extreme skinniness, dark eyebags, and an overall sickly look. Heroin chic has long been criticised for romanticising drug use and disordered eating. Rising to trend in the mid 80s, peaking in the 90s, and continuing through the early 2000s, it wasn’t until quite recently in the 2010s that Heroin chic slowly started to die out. Though it never truly went away, from the 2010s it has been far more popular to be curvy, and have an hour glass figure. However, with many thick ladies such as the Kardashians who were renowned for their curvaceous figures now liquidating their BBLs, many fear that heroin chic will return.
Heroin chic grew into popularity mainly with super models, as well as fashion photographers such as David Sorrenti. It was made very clear by the media, and fashion labels, that the ideal body type was one achieved through unhealthy methods. It showed and glamorised this malnourished look, and ultimately led to disordered eating of countless women and girls. As well, in order to be a model many women had to lose weight, and were forced into strict diets to keep their petite size.
Though heroin chic is what was promoted, this didn’t stop the media from attacking and accusing women of ‘encouraging’ heroin chic. Artists such as Fiona Apple have faced lots of backlash for apparently promoting heroin chic, despite speaking out about following beauty standards shown in popular media. The media has shown countless times how quick they are to attack slim women for promoting heroin chic when it isn’t done in a way they can market off of.
Currently, despite the abundance of progress made by the body positivity movement, the social climate still seems to be tipping more towards thinness again. Many people are opting for a more slim look, dieting is increasing, clean girl is trending, more women are going to the gym. However, there has been an increase as well in disordered eating, and body insecurities. These seem to never have truly gone away. But by tackling some of the root causes, such as encouraging unhealthy dieting etc, we can help to prevent this from starting.
I do truly believe that thanks to the body positivity movement that maybe this time around it will be more positive. Being skinny is not a problem, it’s just the methods people take to achieve it. So with proper self care and the new knowledge on mental health, maybe this time heroin chic will truly die, and be replaced by a healthier alternative. With all things trends come and go, it is truly just a shame that women’s bodies are one of these trends.
