BOTD: Java Sparrow
Photo: J. N. Stuart
"A small, plump finch with a very thick pink bill. The black head and white cheek patch are distinctive. Juveniles have a similar color pattern but are grayer. Social; forages in flocks and roosts communally. Forages in rice fields, grasslands, meadows, and urban and suburban areas (in introduced range). Call consists of one or more musical chirps. Native to the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali, where now quite rare. Introduced widely across the globe including India, Philippines, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Hawaiian Islands."

Bun-chan the Java Sparrow (Pirate Edition)

We all know and love Bun-Chan! A rotund and chunky bird collectible that can be found throughout the series, trapped within the crane machine games.
With three colour options: Blue, Pink and Orange and two variations of size regular and Jumbo.
However, Like a Dragon: Pirates in Hawaii added a fresh new twist...

and SEGA much like with the original Bun-Chans decided to bring them to life as prizes for their Crane Machines.
The Pink and Orange versions have these classic pirate crew outfits and a little scar on their cheek. Naturally any ship needs a Captain and that comes in the form of our Blue Bun.

I adore the designs but as with alot of merchandise the actual product will nearly always differ from expectation.
Of the two designs that I purchased, I am definitely happiest with Captain Bun-Chan. When browsing through listings to hand pick my particular plush it became apparent to me that the crew mate "buns" had a few more issues than their counterpart.
I assume due to the individual stitching, but alot of the plush mascots looked skewed, with misplaced proportions, puffs of fabric not sitting correctly under the beak, etc.
I was aware of the little beak tilt but thought it added character so that was not a problem for me. It wasn't until writing this as a draft that I noticed a more substantial flaw.
This is targeted at the crew mate variation in specific; But it is not correctly proportioned at all !?
With a much larger head and far less of a rotund chubby body, I know a small part of this is due to how the plush is stored, stuffed away in a clear bag but even after some manhandling and adjusting he is significantly more lean than he should be and I think this is what had made him look a little "odd".

And lastly, the only real difference between SEGA's original Buns and the Pirate Buns seems to be the eyes. They have opted to remove the dot of white that the first mascots had and instead use plain black beads that can provide their own reflections.
Regardless of how rant-y this post may have come across, I still adore these lil' guys and I now own one Bun-Chan of each of the colour variations.

do you have a list of the human-daemon/witch-palisman pairs anywhere, like as a reference?
nowhere yet, but i can go ahead and make one now! under the cut i'll list all the people we've met so far! including settled form if that's relevant. i'll link this to the masterpost pinned at the top of my blog and i'll try to keep it up-to-date!
if someone whose been mentioned in the fic isn't down here, feel free to shoot me an ask! full chance i'll forgot someone if the mention was offhand and they become a bigger player later lol.
i split the list into major/medium minor characters just so some of the people who dont show up as much don't bloat the main list lol. i added "medium" as a category between them because as the series goes on this distinction will be needed.
ive also decided to change the way this list works: will now list characters and their daemons as they are when they are first introduced, so there should be no worries of spoilers save for like, the existence of characters! unless you have not read 1. please read 1 and then read this list lol.
Major Characters
Luz and Mari (she/her): previously Settled as a pug, currently Unsettled. Her full name is Maritza.
Eda and The Owl Beast (she/her): also known as Beastie, she replaced Eda's palisman Owlbert (he/him) after they were cursed. In her own language, she is named Wings-Across-Night.
Lilith and Burkit (he/him): Settled as a peregrine falcon.
King and François (he/him): a pink rabbit plushie. King calls him a palisman.
Willow and Clover (she/her): Unsettled.
Gus and Bailey (she/her): Unsettled. Her full name is Baililine.
Amity and Alma (she/her): Settled as a cat.
Hunter and Fidelity (she/her): Settled as an Irish Wolfhound.
Medium Characters
Camila and Sabas (he/him): Settled as Pampas deer

Raine and Cadenza (he/she): Settled as a canary.
Amber and Sou (they/them): Settled as a java sparrow.
Derwin and Keira (she/her): Settled as a white Barbary dove.
Katya and Cadao (he/him): Settled as a European goldfinch.
Darius and Adelio (she/her): Settled as a pig; her design is a mix of the Oxford Sandy and Black, and the Tamworth.
Eberwolf (he/she/they) and Faolan (it/its): Settled as a brown tabby cat.
Minor Characters
Odalia and Obadiah (he/him): Settled a Cotswold sheep.
Gwendolyn and Haukr (he/him): Settled as a livestock guardian dog.
Mattholomule and Blaze (he/him): Unsettled. His full name is probably Blaise.
Principal Bump and Frewin (he/him): Settled as a pig. His design is based on the Gloucestershire Old Spots pig.
#ask#and a grove of palistrom to you#i was looking thru my internal list of pairs and WOW there are So Many Of Them lol#some of them are like minor characters of course but i am. so excited :333 for some of the people yall dont even KNOW#thinking about one of my favorite stories (15.5) you truly could not guess who the pov is there#or like you could. i just feel like most people wont lol#anyways LISTS!!! love a good list

I got two new birds, to keep my two old ones company. They're the two wild-coloured Java sparrows in the back. The smaller one I named Jambalaya, and the bigger one Biryani. Jambalaya also has some small but distinctive white feathers behind her eyes.

Okay, so I can explain that one bird video. The silver java sparrow we see in the beginning which was moving its beak weirdly was heartbroken because it likes the white java sparrow (the one under the blanket) but the white java sparrow is married to the black java sparrow (the other one under the blanket) and the one jumping on top was trying to impress the sliver java sparrow. It's basically a complicated love square.
I see... I didn't realise java sparrows had such complex love lives.

We aren't done. Because no one mentioned the beloved java sparrow!

This is their 'standard' plumage, but breeders have made a lot of variants!

Theyre very commonly found to be 100% white as well!
lahore pigeons are some of the most visually appealing birds out there. like in terms of visual design. very minimalist, good contrast.

there's been birds landing near our hose recently. but not the usual ones. yes, they're also brown/white/black, but they have longer beaks and tail feathers. so def not java sparrows or eurasian tree sparrows

im sorry the spanish for white-crowned sparrow is WHAT
(maybe i’m just an immature learner but chingolo absolutely sounds like a minced oath)
but okay, sibley (US) has three words used in translation of sparrow names (not counting java sparrow because it’s obviously not a sparrow). gorrión is for old world sparrows and chingolo is for most new world sparrows in the US. cerquero is only for the olive sparrow but seems to be used for other birds in genus Arremonops like cerquero de El Tocuyo / Tocuyo sparrow
gorrión - house, eurasian tree
chingolo - chipping, clay-colored, brewer’s, black-chinned, field, black-throated, five-striped, sagebrush, bell’s, lark, american tree, white-crowned, golden-crowned, harris’s, white-throated, fox, song, licoln’s, swamp, vesper, baird’s, grasshopper, henslow’s, leconte’s, nelson’s, saltmarsh, seaside, savannah, bachman’s, cassin’s, botteri’s, rufous-winged, rufous-crowned
cerquero - olive

I GOT IT . Animals , colors , any sort of objects that you associate with AIDAN ? Tell us anything (please)
I love you thank you
upupujgj okay. ..
For birds it's got to be white java sparrows he would love holding them and listening to their little eeny cheeps..... colors it's gotta be light blue gold and white because they remind me of the sky and angels and the symbolism behind them and all .....he also reminds me of specifically leather and cloth bound books that have covers that are damaged or gone pale and yellowed pages eith so many notes scribbled into them especially science related books specifically. .. I also think. Soft sunrays.. yeah
