A chart shewing part of the coast of N.W. America : with the tracks of His Majesty's sloop Discovery and armed tender Chatham, Captain George Vancouver, 1798
Originally "Puget Sound" referred only to the lower sound below Tacoma, with Admiralty Inlet describing the rest. Lushootseed people called it x̌ʷə́lč or "whulge," an onomatopoeia of the sound of small waves, meaning water or sea. The entire body of water is often called Salish Sea.

Just for fun i thought i wonder if there is a butterfly with her name and found this. "Euphydryad editha taylori, the Whulge checkerspot or Taylor's checkerspot, is a butterfly native to an area of the northwestern United States and Vancouver Island" it looks similar to the snake cocoon butterfly you found.
okay anon this is beautiful

first off, this butterfly is native to where i grew up as a kid and so i didn’t even think of it! they’re so pretty..

also, grab a cup of cocoa and sit down for nine minutes of wholesome with this short news story on how the women of an all women’s prison have been working to save this butterfly from extinction. oh. my. goodness.

This music was recorded at Seattle's LoFi Gallery on May 10 2018, a happy conversation between intelligent & eccentric friends.
Of historical interest—Amy & Jack have known each other for over thirty years but had never played music together before. Now they have. With luck it will happen again.
(To be fair, Amy & Patrick had never played before either. This may also be of historical interest.)
In addition, this music is dedicated—& was dedicated in the moment at the time of playing—to an orca named Tokitae, which means Nice Day, Pretty Colors! in Lummi (or so my research tells me). Tokitae has been performing 2 shows a day at Seaworld in Miami, Florida since 1970, when she was captured off Whidbey Island, Puget Sound (Whulge), Washington State. In Florida they call her "Lolita".
The Lummi would like her returned, to a private cove on Puget Sound's Orcas Island. Seaworld as of now is having none of it. As we played this music, or as it played us, a Lummi delegation began a mighty roadtrip from Seattle to Miami, bearing a freshly carved orca-&-seal totem pole, making many stops along the way to discuss their hopes for Nice Day, Pretty Colors! We wish them all the best.
(Thanks to alert listener Marla Katz for hipping us to all of this before showtime!)

So, in a previous tag response on the diver resisting the urge to pet the sixgill shark, I pointed out that we don’t know how a bluntnose sixgill shark, Hexanchus griseus (Bonaterre, 1788), would respond to human touch outside of duress. Well. . . as of today, that’s no longer the case. Here’s a video from John Sanders’ channel; just uploaded. We can see the shark settled to the floor, as it did in the GIF. It may even be the same shark. She appears unbothered by the touch, and isn’t fighting and isn’t trying to get away. In this video, we have two perspectives of the same event. So, it appears that this specific H. griseus doesn’t mind attention from humans. Reminder that every shark has a different personality, and we need more evidence before we can say that H. griseus is okay with touch and attention like this.
