Fish of the Day
Happy Tuesday, everyone! Today's fish of the day is the pacific spiny dogfish!
Tumblr media
The pacific spiny dogfish, known by scientific name Squalus suckleyi is well known for being referred to as "the most abundant species of sharks in the world". Dogfish are prominent in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian ocean, but as the name implies this species is only found in the Pacific ocean, differentiated from the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) in only 2010. Found on the coastline in shallow waters, and offshore, remaining on the continental shelf. Spiny dogfish prefer saltwater, but can survive in brackish waters and in estuaries, where they occasionally go for hunting purposes. Migratory patterns exist, but are currently not well understood, although seem to be a seasonal north-south migration to warm water in the winter, and colder water in the summer.
Tumblr media
The diet is entirely carnivorous, and consists of mollusks, crustaceans, fish, and smaller sharks and skates. On the back of the dogfish, in front of both dorsal fins in a spine, that have a mild venom, and are used for protection when threatened, giving them the spiny part of their name. This venom is currently not well studied. The pacific spiny dogfish has been found as large as 50 inches long, and can live up to 100 years in the wild.
Tumblr media
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thursday! Remember, I am always taking suggestions for future!

Did you know, that like snakes and lizards, most sharks are ectothermic? This means that, normally, they’re not capable of regulating their own body temperature. However, sharks that live in frigid Arctic waters have adapted an ability called counter-current heat exchange. This method of keeping warm, allows these sharks to survive in even the coldest of the world’s oceans.

PRIDE SHARKS!!
decided to draw these little guys for pride month!! I love sharks and wanted to do something special this month
here are the breeds + flags from the top:
aromantic flag bluntnose sixgill shark (they are also known as cow sharks, which is really cute!!)
asexual flag pacific spiny dogfish (despite the name, they’re not dogs but adorable sharks!!)
intersex flag leopard shark (their spots are so neat, I adore them)
transgender flag nurse shark (nurse sharks are one of my favourite sharks!! second only to the little pacific spiny dogfish)
bisexual flag cookie cutter shark (they always look so silly, but their bite packs a punch!! cookie cutter sharks can take chunks out of prey)
agender flag hammerhead shark (sorry if he looks a bit too similar to the aromatic flag cow shark!! on a side note, there’s sort of a nostalgia factor for me when I see a hammerhead, because they’re my dad’s favourite shark!! mine, at the time, was whale sharks!)
genderfluid flag lollipop catshark (the most adorable name I’ve ever seen given to a shark!! yet another one of my favourites, they’re just so small, like kittens and lollipops. maybe that’s where the name’s from?)
lesbian flag sand tiger shark (despite their intimidating features and sharp teeth, they are indeed passive! the only unprovoked attacks made by sand tiger sharks on humans are by juveniles that still are not grown enough)
gay flag blue fin shark (or just the blue shark!! it’s indeed a blahaj. such a beautiful blue.)
that’s all of them! sorry I couldn’t fit too many sharks onto this one canvas. if I could, I’d scrawl more on the walls!!
might make another canvas filled with pride sharks soon!!

hello do you wanna talk about sharks
here are
10 cool shark facts!
most sharks are colorblind!
contrary to popular belief, sharks arent smooth! their skin feels a bit like sandpaper
this one's a bit dark: if a shark embryo grows teeth while in the womb, it will partake in intrauterine cannibalism, which basically means it will eat its siblings in the womb
a shark can have up to 30k teeth!
whale sharks can live to be 100 years old!
a shark pregnancy can last anywhere from 5 months to 3.5 years
sharks have existed for over 400 million years!
the odds of you getting killed by a shark are 1 in 3.7 million
some female sharks can reproduce independently, leaving the males vulnerable as there's no use for them! #girlpower!
there are 440 different species of sharks!
ahh shark facts!! okay im gonna add onto some of yours and also say some more :)
5. it is so awesome how long they live, sometimes even to 150 years. but, scientists believe, that only around 10% of whale sharks make it to adulthood :( so despite being able to grow to 63 feet at most or 30-50 feet on average, the average whale shark makes it to only 13 feet long because they die so young.
(if my numbers are a little off im sorry, this is by memory)
10. i think that you might only be counting elasmobronchii sharks, because(fun fact) there are either 512 or 535 species of sharks, it depends on who you ask. there are 23 species of sharks that arent officially considered sharks (yet?) and some scientists still count them :)
okay here are my own !!
1. there are more than 150 species of catsharks! my favorite is probably the chain catshark because of their bioluminescence and beautiful pattern. ghost catsharks and demon catsharks are also cool(i just like their name)
2. whale sharks give live birth to around 300 pups at a time, and they go to a location so remote and far away from predators that scientists have no clue where they go to give birth
3. catsharks curl up into a little ball when theyre threatened to protect their underbellies
4. sharks have very sensitive electroreceptors called ampullae of lorenzini, which are formed as a network of mucas filled pores in the skin of sharks and other cartilages fish! they are able to detect the electrical signals that their prey create
5. pacific spiny dogfish can live for more than 80 years, while atlantic dogfish only live around 35-40 years
6. whale sharks and nurse sharks are both orectolobiformes :) they have 5 gills, 2 spineless dorsal fins, an anal fin and spiracles(paired openings that let in water and filter their gills. theyre by the sharks eyes)
(i described orectolobiforms by memory so if i forgot something, im sorry!!)
7. whale sharks can travel thousands of miles to different feeding grounds, but they only move at around 3 mph. theyre a migratory shark but they move so slow??
yay sharks!!

It's Mermay, and my inner child knows it.
I'm gonna regret doing this tomorrow.
Thomas:
🦈 Blue pacific spiny dogfish/shark boy.
🦈 The spikes on his dorsal fin are venomous, so everyone else tries to not touch them.
🦈 Really cheeky and childish shark. He absolutely loves to prank the Big Three (James, Henry and Gordon) and sometimes Percy and Emily by putting small oysters on their beds. He occasionally pranks Edward and Toby too by scaring them
🦈 Affectionate bites people extremely close to him, as a sign of trust, attachment and fondness. Edward, Percy, James and Gordon have more than two marks.
🦈 Likes to go to the surface, and doesn't mind talking to humans, who at the first find him a little scary, but then see him as a baby. However, he needs to stay in the water, so he doesn't dehydrate.
🦈 He's afraid of birds, and tries to hide behind a rock when he is at the surface, so they don't capture him (even though they are not his predators).
Edward:
🐟 Blue Betta merman.
🐟 Partially air breather, so he needs to go to the surface occasionally. He genuinely enjoys talking to humans and knowing more about their culture and perception of merpeople.
🐟 The dad friend. He acts fatherly towards teenagers and children.
🐟 A gentleman in all the sense of the word. He is hardly ever mean to anyone and treats people the way he would like them to be with him: respectful.
🐟 To counter his average physical abilities, he's really smart and loves to learn new things every day.
🐟 Unfortunately, not all the humans are the same: more than once he had been tried to be captured due to his blue and red fins. As a result, he's scared of sailors and their fishing nets.
Henry:
🐙 Green cecaelia/half-octopus.
🐙 The strong boy and usually works carrying big materials with his tentacles, but he's a little slow, compared to his friends. He also can camouflage when he's looking for food.
🐙 He releases ink when he's scared or embarrassed by something, but also when he feels threatened. Additionally, he is venomous, but his venom is not lethal.
🐙 Such a sassy but nice guy who loves aquatic flora. He seldom goes to the surface due to not trusting at all humans, mainly because he is aware of their fear of octopuses or the stereotype that the cecaelias are witches.
🐙 At first, he wasn't a fan of storms, but with Thomas' help, he started to find them relaxing.
🐙 He likes to carry younger sea people like Thomas and Percy with his tentacles; they don't weight anything to him.
Gordon:
⚡ Half-blue electric eel
⚡ He's an air breather, and also enjoys sunbathing a little with Edward, Toby, James and Henry (if the latter is in the mood). He is not fond of humans and scold Thomas and Edward for interacting frequently with them.
⚡ Seriousness go brr, but he's hard worker, great with kids and gives good advice. You could consider him another dad friend of the group.
⚡ He barely uses his electricity, but he won't hesitate to electrocute a threat towards him or his friends.
⚡ Really strong, analytical and fast. However, patience is not one of his virtues. As a matter of fact, he gets slightly electric when he's annoyed.
⚡ Not fond of crustaceans (the equivalent of the diesels), except for BoCo, Salty, Daisy, Mavis and Philip.
James:
✨ Half-red manta ray.
✨ He frequently goes to the surface, even though he doesn't need air. He just does it to follow his non-so-subtle crush and then show off, or to take sunbaths.
✨ A little stronger than the average manta ray. He's also fast and really aggressive despite his species being relatively calm.
✨ He is okay with humans (more than once he had been asked to be on a photo, and he accepts), but particularly LOATHES sailors. They amount of times he was close to be killed is incredible. Because of that, he usually goes to the surface with Gord and Henry, who are considered dangerous to hunt.
✨ He's the incarnation of vanity, but he's a funny guy and a loyal friend. Don't mess with his loved ones: he will fucking end you. Especially if said friend is called Emily.
✨ Prefers to be far from big sharks (except for Thomas) and killer whales.
Percy:
🦭 Brownish-green selkie.
🦭 He's partially an air breather. Usually goes with the rest of his friends (mainly Thomas). He's very nice to humans and love to share aquatic gossips with them (much to Gordon's dismay, who is always reminding him that merpeople should not share a lot of information to humans).
🦭The baby of the group. He's a little know-it-all cinnamon roll, but that doesn't mean he won't play tricks on people (e.j. Henry, James and Gordon).
🦭 He spends some nights with the majority of his friends in the deep sea, and others enjoying the night on the surface. Toby sometimes joins him.
🦭 Loves swimming to estuaries with Edward.
🦭 Henry practically has to go behind him so he doesn't get lost by going to sunken ships to, as he says, “find something useful for my new invention”.
Toby:
🐢 Half - brown sea turtle.
🐢 Spends most of the time in the ocean, but goes qto the surface to nest or bask. Percy and Thomas try to join
🐢 Prefers to not interact with humans, aside for children. His skin and shell are always some idiot's lucrative desires.
🐢 He is such a wise man who acts like a grandfather to the young lads. They love when he tells them stories about pirates and sea monsters.
🐢 Do not mess with him or with his guys. He can and will make you regret it. He's not as strong or as fast as his friends, but he's analytical and would not hesitate to go to your weakest spot.
🐢 Appreciates sunsets and never misses a flush. He finds them relaxing after a stressful day at work.
Emily:
💫 Half - green jellyfish.
💫 She's armed with nematocysts on her tentacles, and while her venom is no lethal, it still leaves extreme pain.
💫 She likes humans, but prefer to keep the distance with them so her defense mechanisms doesn't believe they're a threat.
💫 Goes to the surface only when she's bored and has nothing to do. Henry occasionally joins her.
💫 Likes to prove herself to merpeople by showing her abilities of strength and intelligence. However, she can be a little bossy.
💫 She, like most of the female merpeople, doesn't have to wear a top, but she does it anyway to feel comfortable.

INCREDIBLE new footage from John Sanders at Redondo!!!
Here's why:
The question is up in the air as to whether the bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) is a primarily a predator or scavenger. The answer is likely both when looking at other predators in its niche, but this footage is another key to confirming the hypothesis that they are primarily scavengers.
In the past, H. griseus has been recorded ingesting crabs and spitting them out at a bait station specifically for the crabs. This was interesting to me because crustaceans supposedly make up a decent portion of their diet. Why wouldn't the observed shark eat the crabs even if it couldn't get the fish meat inside the trap?
A more recent study, which I also wrote about, found tissues from a young dolphin in the stomach of an H. griseus from the western Mediterranean Sea. These are not fast sharks. There were not brittle stars or other scavenging organisms in the stomach, suggesting that the shark got to the dolphin before the others, if it was scavenged and not predated. Among other little details that I go into further detail in that post.
To the point: In this video, we see three H. griseus at a bait station crowded with pacific spiny dogfish (Squalus suckleyi) and red rock crabs (Cancer productus). There was one Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister) and one flatfish that may be a rock sole (Lepidopsetta bilineata) or an English sole (Parophrys vetulus). All gathered to feed on the salmon meat placed by the divers. Repeatedly in the footage, we see the H. griseus ingest crabs and spit them out alive.
Why? Well, it appears that they are only interested in the salmon flesh and may have been trying to steal the morsels that the crabs were pinching away at. In one instance, an H. griseus goes for a whole gathering of crabs. Doesn't eat a single one. Now, to draw any conclusion from this would require a lot of assumptions. I assume that these crabs had salmon meat in their claws and I assume that the sharks got the flesh before spitting the crabs out. That need not be the case to still support my hypothesis that these sharks are primarily scavengers.
These sharks had multiple opportunities to eat any number of the other visitors to the feast. In one moment, an S. suckleyi was right at the rostrum of one of the H. griseus and the latter didn't even try to eat the former. This could be because S. suckleyi has venomous spines; perhaps it is learned or instinctual not to try and eat them. But then there's the C. productus. Other that having a slippery carapace, there is little the crab could do that would prove fatal if eaten live. And then there's the flatfish, which has no natural defenses or hazards.
All of this points to scavenger behavior.
I am blown away by this footage (and extremely envious of this diver). Even though my ROV is OOC, I still get observe these sharks in one way or another.

Reverse Mermay #11: Like all members of the Squalidae family, the Pacific Spiny Dogfish has a sharp spine in each of its dorsal fins used to protect it from potential predators. They grow slowly and reproduce even slower, with a gestation period of around two years.

it's me i'm back, please, i offer this humble pearl in exchange for Nel fun facts!!
🦪
👐
-greenwitchtaimanslayer
ty for the pearl here are some Fun Nel Facts for u:
☆ she has been able to split her tail ever since she could remember. she thinks this is what caused her parents to abandon her, as it was also the cause of a lot of bullying from the other street kids in the fishman district, but she can never be sure.
☆ even when split, her legs are covered in dark green scales! bc of these she hates wearing pants and shoes, bc by golly do they chafe against said scales. winter islands are a personal hell for her lmao
☆ she can play the ocarina
☆ her specific mermaid species is the pacific spiny dogfish, which are a type of shark!
☆ she joined the crew as a guest during the reverse mountain arc and stuck around through the shenanigans up until her personal arc, which was post alabasta but before skypiea!
☆ she's an astronomer but she also has some knowledge of tinkering and ship building bc u can't get to the moon without a ship, after all. nothing as extravagant as franky or even usopp, but the three of them are considered the tinker trio in the crew.
☆ the first time sanji opened his mouth around her she seriously contemplated drowning him but decided not to bc he was nigh incomprehensible anyway (she regrets this to this day)
☆ she likes wooden jewelry

ANDREA: No. Well… There’s this story people used to tell, from before there were AIs like you, but after humans started dreaming of them. Something like “A man was walking down the road, when the Tin Man came up to him. He said: “Can you tell me how to find humanity?”. The man told him “I don’t know, let’s look together and maybe we’ll find it.””
ANDREA: The thing is, humanity isn’t something anyone can prove conclusively. But sharing company with others and asking yourself about it is the only way we have.
