Friends who have experience with diabetic cats- when you did a glucose check, did you do the ear or the paw? Did you do it by hand or use the device? Reasons why? I was supposed to get a reading 4 hours after her shot this morning for the vet. Rather than napping, Bug decided the 4 hour mark was an excellent time to want to play, drink from the sink, be squirrelly and overall suspicious of me (she’s pretty suspicious of me in general these days, hahaha). So I was not successful. Vet said not to stress and just try again tonight or over the weekend. Thing is, it has to be at 11:30 am or pm, and if I can’t pull it off I have to take her in to do it and reeeeeally need to not take off more work. This whole situation isn’t ideal for a chronic over-thinker like yours truly. I’ve watched so many videos. I even watched a friend do it to their cat. This is the first time Bug has jumped up onto the headboard in a VERY long time. Her strength and muscle tone have noticeably improved with the higher protein diet. So I’m feeding spiders tonight… I take two cages out and turn my back for one second, and Goblin takes advantage. So I sit on the floor and decide to take a photo of her before getting her out of there, because let’s face it- she looks adorable. I grab a random plastic bag on the floor next to me without looking at it, and shake it over my head to get her to look. Well there was a heavy makeup compact in that bag, and it fell right out and smacked me square on the bridge of the nose. And it hurt. It still hurts. And left me with a red welt and a tiny cut. Poor Bug is having a rough time. She’s been on insulin for almost two months, with two increases, and it doesn’t seem to be making a dent. Her numbers are sky high. The vet isn’t sure if maybe it’s mild pancreatitis causing her to be insulin resistant, or if maybe she’s been having the occasional hypoglycemic event causing her to bounce into the other extreme and be hyperglycemic for a few days (somogyi effect). But, as of now, she has no ketones present, which is good, and is acting mostly normal (good appetite, yelling at us, etc). So after some late night discussion with my vet (seriously, I LOVE my vet) we decided to fit Bug with a Freestyle Libre for the next two weeks so we can really get an idea of what her numbers are doing. And so she has to wear a shirt over it. She is not happy about the shirt. @mrs_tea_rex was nice enough to lend me this one today, and now I keep calling Bug “Cupcake” like Vi in Arcane. 😂 Long story short… this weekend has been… a lot. Bug claims this pile of laundry in the name of feline-kind everywhere. The vet wanted me to try to get a glucose curve and since today is the only day I’ll have off at home for the next couple weeks, that’s been my day today. Blood spot checks every two hours over the course of two hours. What fun! Only one more check at 7:30 and we are done for the day. Thank goodness.
