someone does something upsetting and i don’t understand why for a very long time. i am upset and resentful at that person even though they have perhaps left my life. then, a year later or maybe two or five, i read a book in which a character makes very similar choices to theirs. i am that much closer to understanding. i likely never will fully, but there is so much gratification in being closer and within that being able to forgive. this is one of the many reasons why we read.

The Architect's Apprentice By Elif Shafak What a beautiful beautiful beautiful book! Of the four books @duchessofcornwallsreadingroom chose for Winter reading, I've read three. This was the one that at first glance I was tbe least enthusiastic about. I thought it would be bored down with dates and facts ( involving math!) which I would have found tedious. But no, there's an elephant, that piqued my interest. Granted, I would have liked more elephant time in the book as I have a disdain for much of humanity. But this was a story full of love and humor along with such descriptive narrative that I become so completely absorbed in 16th century Istanbul that I could imagine the sights, sounds and scents of every street in the city. That is why we read! Also, the Plague was rather frequent. #thereadingroom #booklover #elifshafak #thearchitectsapprentice #whyweread #booksbooksbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CMhchddFnoz/?igshid=ir82eddmsdmv

Reader!! ❤️❤️❤️ #Repost @darlingreaders with @get_repost ・・・ So you know that fear I had...about seeing a bear...well, it came true.⠀ ⠀ But, not in the way that you might think.⠀ ⠀ The remote hike we took in the Tetons was the most breathtaking, peaceful place. Truly. I can see why the bears like to hang out there. Gorgeous. The masses were missing out. I was sorta glad they weren't there - but also kinda wanted them there. Power in numbers, right?⠀ ⠀ As we rounded the last turn around the lake and had about a mile left, we ran into a couple. They came up to us and said, "We just saw a grizzly back there!" - pointing riiiiight towards where we needed to go. They pulled out their phone and showed us the video.⠀ ⠀ I'm pretty sure I had pick my jaw up off the trail.⠀ ⠀ Yep, they saw a grizzly.⠀ ⠀ Let's just say, during that last mile back to car I made some obnoxious noises to let that bear know we were coming. I may never live this down with my family.⠀ ⠀ But, thankfully the only bear we saw - was the one on that video! PHEW! I love being an adventure family. Usually.⠀ ⠀ So tell me, have YOU ever seen a bear?⠀ ⠀ Speaking of adventure - there is a new Cece Loves Science book out and it's allllll about adventure. Cece and her friends (accompanied by Cece's mom) go on a camping trip. They set up camp, hike and eat lots of s'mores. But they do have some problems that have to solved along the way. Their knowledge of science and stem come in handy when they have to find their way after getting lost and take shelter from a storm.⠀ ⠀ Do you have a little adventurer? ⠀ Cece Loves Science and Adventure⠀ by Kimberly Derting & Shelli Johannes⠀ illustrated by Vashti Harrison⠀@vashtiharrison @harperkids⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #raisingreaders #kidslit #abookaday #childrensliterature #childrenslit #kidsbookstagram #yeskidsbookstagram #kidsbooks #kidbooks #raiseareader #storytime #picturebooks #picturebook #readtome #letsread #littlereaders #earlyreaders #earlyliteracy #literacy #literacymatters #readingismagic #whyweread #readmore #readaloud #readaloudrevival #lifelongreaders #growingreaders #adventurefamily https://www.instagram.com/p/BzR3kgEgWvF/?igshid=1blrj53tp6exw

I'm a big fan of grandparents, in general. And as I've mentioned before, I love an intergenerational story. While I'm fond of the sweet ones, though, my favourites are the ones with some humour, like "The Frank Show" (2012) by David Mackintosh. 👴👴👴 When a little boy has to bring a family member to speak at school, he makes it known that he'd prefer a cool uncle like his friend's, or even one of his parents. Instead, the only one available is his crabby, cantankerous grandpa, Frank, who thinks nothing measures up to "the old days". But maybe, given a chance, Grandad Frank might be more interesting than anticipated... A wonderful, funny story about family and not making assumptions. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #thefrankshow #davidmackintosh #curmudgeon #oldmen #grandfather #grandad #grandpa #thegoodolddays #intergenerational #intergenerationalstories #family #reading #childhoodmemories #homeschoolfamily #childrensbook #picturebooks #booksthatmatter #welovereading #firstgradeteacher #teacherinspiration #classroombookaday #whyweread #readingforgrowth #talkaboutbooks #englishcurriculum #booksforbetter #familytogetherness #booksaboutfamily https://www.instagram.com/p/B3u3Tyjnxwu/?igshid=3lfo7ykop2yw

Always looking for some book recommendations - especially this year! hoping to read more and fill up my journal. Sometimes I think about how I used to journal all the time as an adolescent, creating little vignettes & prose, miniature stories. Perhaps it’s the day dreamer in me that loves it so much. But if you are kind enough, let me some recommendations or what’s on your #literaturelove radar! #whyweread #readingnook / Tap on the photo for links to jewelry & candles!

As an athletic little girl, I was very lucky. I grew up with a dad who not only bought me a baseball mitt and played catch with me, but would say things like, "You get that great throwing arm from your grandmother, my mom. You know she played on a women's softball team! She was fantastic!" But not every little girl is encouraged in athletic pursuits, and back when he was young it was even more rare. "Anybody's Game: Kathryn Johnston, the First Girl to Play Little League Baseball" is the true story of a little girl whose family encouraged her even when society didn't. ⚾⚾⚾ Written by Heather Lang, who spent time talking to the real Kathryn Johnston about her experiences, it's a beautiful story of determination and a refusal to give in to naysayers. And Illustrator Cecilia Puglesi's artwork brings the playgrounds to life with colour and movement. A wonderful picture book biography and a great lesson about inclusion. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #anybodysgame #kathrynjohnston #thefirstgirltoplaylittleleaguebaseball #heatherlang #ceciliapuglesi #albertwhitman #littleleague #littleleaguebaseball #littleleaguebaseball⚾️ #girlsplaybaseballtoo #girlsplaybaseball #booksaboutbaseball #picturebookbiography #picturebookbiographies #baseballisforgirls #femaleathlete #femaleathletes #womeninsport #womeninsports #girlsinsports #girlsinsport #inclusion #inclusionmatters #girlscandoanything #girlpower #educationforequality #talkingwithkids #whyweread https://www.instagram.com/p/B3DW8zanBsU/?igshid=oujldrcwey68

Hi tumblr, it's been a minute
I got this internship thingy which basically (as far as I can tell) consists of content curation for an online magazine/newsletter about reading.  Entirely from the reader's point of view.  About why we read, what we can do to read better, and resources for readers.  And I stumbled across this while I was looking for famous authors' thoughts on reading:
“I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is my belief.” — Franz Kafka
That just about broke my heart, in the best way possible.
