In the name of all that is holy (Overwatch and booze), the club’s mission is revived. Now though, their goal is much more perilous. Now, they aim to find Jeon Jungkook a girlfriend. “JIMIN!”

“JEON!” Waving wildly, Jimin flags Jungkook down as he steps off the escalator.

There are still several people between them, but none of them prove to be a match for Jungkook. Dodging them easily – spinning, at one point around a family of five – Jungkook dramatically runs towards the exit.

“JIMIN-SSI!” he yells. “I’M COMING!”

Jimin rolls his eyes at the display. “Get your ass over here, Jeon! Sorry,” he apologizes to the same family of five.

Although the mother shoots them both a dirty look, she hurries her kids towards the Taxi stand and does not look back. Jimin opens his arms just as Jungkook crashes into his chest.

Lowering his cheek to Jimin’s hair, Jungkook closes his eyes to whisper, “I think you got shorter.”

“Fuck off,” Jimin grunts, shoving him away before laughing.

Jungkook grins. “Anyways,” he says, slinging an arm about Jimin’s neck. “Are you ready for the best weekend of our lives?”

With a good-natured shake of his head, Jimin leads Jungkook out of the terminal. Always the excellent host, Jimin actually parked his car at the airport and walked inside to greet him. Jungkook cannot remember the last time his family did that for him, let alone a friend.

“Ready to assist Namjoon, you mean?” Jimin gives Jungkook a look. “You know – on his wedding day?”

“Yeah, yeah. That.” The moment they step outside, Jungkook takes a deep breath. “Ahh,” he groans, slowly exhaling. “You smell that, Jimin?”

“Car exhaust?”

“No. Lack of humidity.”

Jimin snorts, striding forward when the crosswalk turns green. “Still not sold on Miami?”

Jungkook opens one eye. “Miami’s fine,” he says automatically, following Jimin as they enter the garage.

Over his shoulder, the garment bag keeps banging his ass. As much as Jungkook hoped this would keep his suit from wrinkling, it is looking more and more like he will need an iron.

Not believing a word Jungkook says, Jimin raises a brow. “If you say so.”

As they reach the next aisle, Jungkook takes in deep gulps of air. Jimin shakes his head at his antics, but Jungkook could not care less. This city always smells like home to him. When they reach Jimin’s car, though – a sensible, gray Subaru – Jungkook’s feet falter.

“What happened to Liz?” he blurts, taken aback by the trade.

Liz was their college nickname for Jimin’s car, stemming from the infamous Liz Lemon of 30 Rock. So dubbed because Jimin’s old car was a complete piece of crap – a lemon, from the time he drove it off the lot.

Jimin pauses, flipping the keys in one hand. “Traded it in,” he says stiffly, pulling open the door. “Too many memories.”

Realizing what Jimin means, Jungkook winces. He had nearly forgotten about the break-up. Granted, it has been almost four months since Jimin and Olivia called it quits, but the two had been dating since college. Slightly longer than Namjoon and his fiancée.

Whereas Namjoon and his fiancée grew closer after University though, Jimin and Olivia were the opposite. Jimin graduated summa cum laude with an acceptance to one of the top medical schools in the country. His painful notetaking really paid off, as Namjoon was wont to say. When he moved to Chicago and began med school in earnest, Olivia left for New York to join a consulting company.

With their busy schedules and early twenties lives, the two drifted apart. Jimin was the one who held on, not wanting to end things with the first girl he loved. It was only when he surprised Olivia in New York over Valentine’s Day he realized it was over. Not that Olivia was cheating on him, or anything – maybe it would have been easier if she were. At least then, there would be somebody to blame.

No, Jimin merely realized they did not fit anymore. Olivia had her friends and interests; he had his and the two no longer meshed. Without realizing it, they had both reached a fork in the woods and turned down different paths.

Ever since their break-up, the chat has been wary of even mentioning her name.

Jungkook glances hesitantly at his profile. “You okay, man?” he asks as they enter the car. Tossing his duffle bag over the backseat, he prays it does not land on his suit.

“Okay?” Jimin places the car in reverse. “Could be better, I guess. Could be worse.”

Jungkook nods as they pull from the spot. Slouched in his seat, he stares out the window because in times like this, he is useless. When it comes to matters of the heart, Jungkook considers himself to be woefully inept.

“Sorry man,” he says quietly. A car honks in response as they get on the highway. “Wish I could say we always hated her, but you know that’s not true.”

Jimin snorts from the driver’s seat. “Yeah, I know. I can’t really bring myself to say that, either.”

“Well, maybe you two will –”

“No. We won’t.”

Seeing Jimin’s face, Jungkook shrugs and resumes looking out the window.

After a minute, Jimin exhales. “So, how’s Miami really going?”

Jungkook’s head whips sideways to face him.

The corner of Jimin’s mouth lifts. “Thought you hid it well, huh?”

“Better than five minutes into the car ride, yeah.”

“Well, you don’t.”

Jungkook snorts. “Miami is… fine. I don’t know. It’s not really Miami I have a problem with.”

“Your job, then?”

“Yeah, and… I don’t know. Everything.”

“Be a little more vague.”

Jungkook’s lips twitch. “I just…” He pauses, collecting his thoughts. “It was so much simpler in college, you know? Things were difficult, but it all had an end date. Right? Get through four years, and you’re done. I’m starting to realize… this doesn’t have an end date.”

Jimin’s lips purse at the road. “The end date is whenever you want it to be, JK.”

“I guess,” Jungkook grumbles, slouching lower in the seat. Any further, and he might slip off the edge. “But then I’d have to admit that I failed. That I spent eight fucking years of my life either in this job, or working towards it. What was the point if I quit?”

“What’s the point of spending another eight years doing something you hate?”

Jungkook stubbornly chews the inside of his cheek, knowing Jimin is right. The problem is, though – even if he quits, Jungkook has no idea what to do. Sure, he likes photography, but the field is competitive as hell. Jungkook wants to do something he loves, but he also wants to succeed. Taking such a massive leap terrifies him.

“Let’s talk about something else,” he mumbles, turning to Jimin.

Although Jimin arches a brow, he reluctantly lets the subject go. “Sure. Let’s talk instead about how Seokjin is bringing a date to the wedding.”

“Seokjin?” Jungkook’s brows shoot so far up, they near-disappear. “Who?”

“Some girl from LA.”

“No shit,” Jungkook exhales, slowly shaking his head. “Wow. We’re all settling down, huh? Soon, it’ll just be you and me, Jimin,” he grins, leaning over to punch Jimin in the arm.

The wheel jerks at the action, swerving them towards the next lane. “Hey!” Jimin blurts, straightening them out with a scowl. “At least I dated someone during the past five years, Jeon. Who’ve you been seeing?”

“No comment.”

“Huh. I don’t remember her. Was she the blonde?”

“Shut up,” Jungkook laughs, reaching out for the stereo. As the latest pop song fills the car, he pointedly stares out the window.

Jimin smiles, shaking his head. Namjoon’s wedding is being held in the city. His fiancée’s father is some big shot at a downtown law firm. From what Jungkook has gathered, the ceremony spiraled from a small, romantic affair into one of the biggest events of the season.

Jungkook’s lip quirks. That is how you know Namjoon’s fiancée’s family is rich. They use phrases like event of the season and christen their yachts with only the most expensive champagne. Having been to several yacht-christenings in Miami, Jungkook has never understood the event. What is the point of buying something expensive, only to ruin it?

Actually, maybe that is the point.

Pushing Miami from mind, Jungkook stares at the highway as they drive towards the city. The wedding has taken on a mind of its own, according to Namjoon. So detailed, so elaborate, they were forced to hire a wedding planner. Jungkook can only imagine Namjoon, micro-manager to the extreme, being forced to trust someone else with his life.

It has been a while since Jungkook last visited Chicago. Namjoon’s family is from here, and whenever they visited in college, they always had a great time. His mom sent them off each morning with fresh fruit and eggs – it was sweet; reminded Jungkook of home.

The familiar skyline arching above brings a smile to his lips. All in all, Jimin and Hoseok do not realize how lucky they are. If Jungkook lived here, he would – cutting the thought off, Jungkook sits up in his seat. Jungkook does not live here, so there is no point pretending.

Glancing down at his phone, Jungkook feels a modicum of guilt. After placing himself in airplane mode, he has not turned the device back on since he landed. Jungkook knows there will be a fresh wave of texts from his boss and for now, wishes to delay the inevitable.

“Where’s the wedding again?” Jungkook asks, turning his head.

Jimin shrugs as he rolls down his window. The night wind ruffles his hair, sending strands flying all over the place. “Some hotel by the river. Hear it has a great view.”

“And what’s the plan for the weekend?”

“Jungkook!” Jimin scolds, turning down the radio. “Did you even read the agenda Seokjin sent?”

Jungkook glances at him guiltily. “Um, I looked at it.”

Seokjin’s is Namjoon’s best man for the wedding. It makes sense – the two of them have been roommates since sophomore year of college, not to mention they both live in LA. Jungkook knows Jimin has also helped Namjoon with wedding details, since he lives in Chicago.

The look Jimin gives says he knows Jungkook is full of bullshit. “There’s a copy of the itinerary in my glove compartment,” he says with a nod. “I printed out a few just in case.”

“Why the fuck,” Jungkook grumbles as he opens the clasp. “Alright, here we go. Wednesday.”

“That’s today,” Jimin prompts.

“I know what day it is.” Jungkook clears his throat. “Alright, Wednesday. Bridesmaids and groomsmen arrive.”

“That’s us,” Jimin adds, shooting Jungkook a look.

“Yep, yep. Thursday – booze cruise. Woo! Seriously?”

Jimin rolls his eyes. “You really didn’t read this, did you?”

Ignoring him, Jungkook continues. “Friday – rehearsal ceremony and dinner. Be at the church by 4:00 PM.”

“Dressed.”

“Doesn’t seem like a necessary clarification,” Jungkook says, flipping over the paper. “Saturday, ceremony starts at 2:00 PM. Photos and reception following. Sunday, brunch.”

Jimin nods. “Don’t be late.”

“Jimin.” Jungkook lowers the sheet. “It’s Wednesday. How can you seriously tell me not to be late to brunch on Sunday?”

“Because I know you.”

“Touché.” Jungkook grins, crumpling the paper despite Jimin’s groans.

There are not many people heading into the city on a Wednesday night – turning on his blinker, Jimin switches lanes to pull off on an exit. As they slow, the buildings around them seem to stretch towards the night sky. Craning his head out the window, Jungkook exhales. When he pulls back, he finds Jimin watching.

“What?” Jungkook asks, somewhat defensive.

Jimin’s upper lip curls. “Nothing. You know, Hoseok and I’s roommate leaves at the end of the month. If you ever wanted to come to Chicago…”

Jungkook glances away. “C’mon, man. I can’t quit my job.”

“Can’t… won’t…” Jimin trails off at Jungkook’s expression in the mirror. “Anyways, the offer stands. Think about it, okay?”

Slowly, Jungkook nods. “Alright, I’ll think about.”

Jimin smiles, appeased and returns to the road. His hands stay firmly at the ten and two ‘o’clock position, which is so Jimin, it makes Jungkook smile. As they wind through the streets, Jungkook cannot help but think about what it would be like to live here.

He would probably be miserable if he simply transferred to Chicago. Maybe a little less so, since Hoseok and Jimin would be here – but nothing would really change in the long run. If he quit his job, though. Jungkook sighs. For now, that type of change remains firmly in the abstract.

“There!” Jimin squints at the building ahead. “That’s the hotel.”

Can’t Go Back Part 2

A/N: This was a lot of fun to write. It’s a long one so grab a cup of tea and a snack before you tuck in. I hope you like it! Word count: 7117

I was never the type to break the rules or have secrets. Not from my family or from my friends. I was the good girl, on track to do “great things” as my granddad said one Christmas. My friends were the ones who did the fun stuff. I was the girl who got dragged to parties with a book in my bag and hung out with the pets in the corner. So, you can imagine my parent’s surprise when at sixteen, I came home after a night out with friends at one of those parties and had nothing to say. I simply went upstairs to my room without popping into their room to say goodnight. I’m sure they thought something horrible had happened to me. In reality, it was the furthest thing from that. Something really amazing had happened. And that something was named Montgomery De La Cruz.

Our story was complicated from the beginning. We ran in opposing crowds. Our friends disliked each other. Our families were very different. We argued like cats and dogs. We kept the relationship a secret from everyone in our lives until we couldn’t take it anymore. Even then, we were extremely selective about who we told. The first person we told was Coach Kerba. Monty trusted the man probably more than he had ever trusted any adult in his life. He had noticed a change in Monty’s behaviour that his friends were either too scared or too stupid to notice and mention. After many discussions about what telling even one person about our relationship would mean, we agreed to tell the coach. The day after our agreement, I met Monty in the fitness centre after school and practice ended. He was still in the locker room when I arrived. “Hey Addison. Justin just left, but I’m sure you can catch up to him if you hurry.” Coach said, expecting me to be looking for my best friend.

“Oh, actually I’m not here to find Justin.”

“Is everything okay?”

I was nervous, so I tried to avoid looking him in the eye, “hmm? Oh, yeah. Everything is fine.”

The door opened and I turned my head, my eyes widening slightly. I relaxed when I saw that it was just Monty.

“Hey Coach, can I talk to you for a minute?” Monty asked, clearly very nervous, though he tried to mask it.

“Sure, Monty. What’s up?”

I shared a look with Monty, unsure of what to say or how to begin. We hadn’t really discussed who would say what or how we would explain anything. I rubbed my arm awkwardly and looked at my feet. Monty coughed. I could feel a blush creeping up my face and neck. He smiled a cheeky little smile at me, and I immediately knew what he was going to say, “it’s not cute so shush you.” I muttered as my blush grew deeper.

“You’re wrong but sure. You keep telling yourself that Addy.”

“Oh, I see. This explains a lot.” Coach Kerba cut in, interrupting our little moment. My blush only intensified, and Monty’s eyes widened.

“Explains what Coach?”

“You’ve been different lately. I haven’t had to keep as much of an eye on you. Or tell you to get your shit together as often. Your game is still good but you’ve chilled out a bit.”

“I told you so.” I grinned at him. Monty paused.

“D-do you think anyone else has noticed?”

“Anyone else being the rest of the team? I highly doubt it. They’re more interested in… well I choose not to think about what forty teenage boys are interested in, unless they bring an issue to my attention.”

I snorted and tried to cover it as a coughing fit. “Um yes, well… maybe that’s a good thing. But good. No one has noticed. That’s… good. On that note, I have to go meet Charlie and talk about his game last week.” Monty mumbled, awkwardly, before kissing me on the cheek and walking out of the room.

“Hey Addison?” Coach Kerba called as I made my way out of the room.

“Yeah Coach?”

“Keep him in check, alright? You’re good for him.”

“I’ll do my best Sir.”

After we told the coach, we decided to wait a few days to let our nerves and discomfort settle before telling anyone else. We agreed to tell our families last, given his dad’s tendency to be an actual crap shoot of a parent, and my dad’s willful ignorance to the goings on of my life. Monty and I met at Monet’s during a slow time to discuss how we would tackle telling our friends. He watched me nervously stir my latte with a cinnamon stick for a few long minutes.

“Are you really okay telling people Addison?”

“Huh? Oh. Yeah, I am. I’m just nervous is all. I mean, Justin is my best friend. And to be quite honest, he hates your guts.” I took a tentative sip of my latte. “And Clay. I’m not really sure what he thinks of you, but I know it’s not a very good opinion. And we both know where Alex stands.”

“I know they don’t like me Addy. But I also know that if they really are your friends, they wont care. Justin has been your best friend since you were nine. He loves you. A boyfriend isn’t going to ruin that, and if it does, then it’s his loss not yours.” He paused and pointed to my rice crispy square. I nodded and he took a bite of it. “Also, I don’t care if they don’t like me.”

“What about your friends?”

“My friends?”

“Yes. You know, those people you spend time with? Of your own free will? Those friends?”

“Scott will like you. Charlie will want to be your new best friend. Bryce can think what he wants.”

“And you know they will like me because…?”

“Scott likes me for some reason, so he will like you. Charlie is just nice like that. Bryce will think what he wants because it’s Bryce and I can’t change that.”

“Do we have to tell Bryce? Do you really think he would be okay with you dating the nice girl? Do you really believe he would keep his mouth shut about it until we were okay with him saying anything? Look what he did to Hannah. He ruined her life because of a picture Justin took. And now… now she’s just gone. I don’t want him thinking that he can do shit like that to me.”

Monty contemplated that for a few minutes. “I guess you’re right. He’s my best friend-”

“Scott is your best friend.”

“Okay, fine. But my point is, he’s my friend. Even still, you might be right about him not keeping this on the dl as much as we want.”

“So, do we just stick with Scott and Charlie then?”

“Sure. If that’s what makes you comfortable. I’m not going to be all chummy with Alex and them though, if that’s what you think.”

I laughed, “Oh God no. I can’t even imagine how that would go. No wait, yes, I can. I would have to separate you.”

With that sorted out, we made plans to tell our friends about each other. Justin was arguably going to take it the hardest, having dealt with Monty the closest, though Alex was a close second due to their tumultuous history. It was going to have to be like ripping off the band-aid. Get in, tell him, hope the scab doesn’t come off with the pad and it doesn’t all go to shit. After I got home, I texted Justin.

Hey, you have plans tomorrow night?

No why? What’s up?

Just curious. Did you want to go for coffee at Monet’s? I want to talk to you about something.

Sure, just need to double check with Mom and Dad. Is everything alright?

Yeah, everything is good.

Alright then. I’ll check at dinner and let you know.

I decided to do some cleaning to distract myself from my nerves until Justin texted me back,Good to go. Meet at five?

I texted Monty to check that that worked for him and he agreed so I texted Justin back to give him the okay.

I ran home after school to drop off my bag so I could beat Justin to Monet’s. Monty was going to meet me there in case all hell broke loose and I needed to stay with Justin. The drive over was uneventful and faster than I would have liked, as I was running over what I was going to say in my head. So, you know how I’ve been distant lately? Well it’s because I’ve been seeing someone. This someone. Monty. The guy you hate. No. That’s stupid. Justin, Monty and I have been seeing each other for a while. Sorry we didn’t say anything. No, that’s worse. Um, maybe I should just kiss him. What? No brain. Bad idea. Very bad idea. Shit, I’m here.

I checked the clock on my dash and saw that it was quarter to five. Deep breaths. Everything will be fine. I played with my keys for a while, debating if I should hightail it out of there. Thinking better of it, I made my way inside. My nerves were causing tunnel vision and my heart was beginning to race. Looking around, I spotted Monty sitting at a table near the back, my latte already sitting with the cinnamon stick. I waved to him discreetly and motioned to the counter. Maybe ordering for Justin would soften the blow. I got his coffee and a lemon bar for good measure. “On second thought, make that two lemon bars and a cinnamon twist please.” I told the barista. Now the man children won’t fight about the snacks. I made my way to Monty’s table carefully, so I didn’t spill Justin’s coffee. My hands were shaking so I had to keep stopping. Arriving at the table safely, I set the coffee and snacks down, before plopping into the chair next to my boyfriend with a dramatic groan. “I don’t want to do this Montgomery. This is going to be so not a good time.”

“Just relax Addy. Everything will be okay. I’ll be here the whole time.” He said, placing his hand on my knee. I stirred my cinnamon stick anxiously into my latte, staring into the disappearing design. Monty placed his hand on my hand to stop my fidgeting kissed the spot behind my ear. I could hear him whispering sweet nothings to me, but I was too immersed in my coffee to listen to what he was saying. That was, until I heard someone clear their throat uncomfortably. It’s now or never. Just don’t puke Addison.

I looked at his shoes first, in an attempt to delay the inevitable. Monty squeezed my knee and I decided I had to stick to my word and rip off the band-aid.

“Hey Justin.” I said, awkwardly.

“Hey Addy.” He replied.

“I got you a coffee and a lemon bar….”

“I see that. Thank you.” He pulled out his chair and sat down, stiffly. Monty watched us stare at each other to see which of us would point him out first. I sipped my coffee and Justin took a bite of the lemon bar. Now’s my chance. Rip it off.

“Monty and I are dating.” I said, the words running into one as I spoke. Justin choked a bit and coughed, taking a sip of his cooled coffee to clear the blockage. Monty barked out a laugh, though I’m not sure if it was at what I said or Justin’s reaction.

“I assumed. You’re not the type to let guys just touch you and kiss your head.” Then the full implications of what I said hit him. “Wait. What? You and Monty. Monty and you.”

“Yes, otherwise why would I be sitting here?” Monty spoke for the first time since Justin arrived.

“Wasn’t talking to you, was I De La Cruz?”

“Watch it Jensen.”

“Oh, I have to watch it? She’s my best friend. You should be the one who has to watch it.”

“And I’m her boyfriend.”

“Boys.”

“You know what I think Monty?”

“Please, enlighten me Justin.”

“Man children.”

“I think-”

“Both of you shut up.” I said, my voice raising slightly. I looked around to see if we had drawn attention. People seemed to be minding their own business, thankfully. “Monty, please be nice. Justin, I will explain if you keep your mouth shut for five minutes.” They were both silent. “Thank you. Now, I understand you are surprised, but you need to relax for a minute. Yes, Montgomery and I are dating. We have been for a few months now.”

“A few months? How did I not notice…?”

“Turns out I’m good with secrets.”

“You’re not that good with them Addy. Why didn’t you say something before?”

“Because Justin. Would you have reacted any better than you are now?” His silence was answer enough. “Exactly. On top of that, we didn’t want to tell anyone. We wanted this to be ours for a while.”

“Who else knows?”

“Besides you? Coach Kerba.”

“You told… Coach Kerba? Why?”

“Um. Because?”

“Because why?”

“Because I actually like him.” Monty said.

“Okay. That’s nice for you, I guess. I still don’t get why.”

“Because he’s like the only adult who gives a shit Justin? Have you not noticed that he actually cares about what’s going on with us? Coach Rick couldn’t care less. He cares about winning the championship by any means necessary.”

“You make a good point.”

“No one else knows Justin. We would like to keep it that way for now.” I told him, softly.

“Are you telling the others?”

“Yeah. Not right now though. I wanted to tell you first. You’re my best friend.”

“I know.” He smirked playfully. He directed his attention to Monty, “you’re not going to tell Bryce, are you?”

“No. We talked about it. But no.”

“Good. Don’t tell him. The less he knows about you two the better.”

“I realize that. He isn’t on the list.”

“So who are you telling?”

“Scott and Charlie.”

“Hmmm. Okay. When are you telling your parents?”

Monty and I looked at each other. I tried to mask my panic by taking a large mouthful of my coffee. “We uh… we haven’t decided. Friends first. Then we will worry about parents.”

“Your dad is going to freak.”

“If he decides this is worth caring about.” I muttered.

“You’re dating Montgomery De La Cruz. He will say it’s worth caring about.”

“That remains to be seen.”

“Are you going to sell tickets? I’d pay good money to watch that.”

“No Justin. It will just be me, Monty, mom, and dad. No spectators.”

“Damn. If you change your mind….”

I rolled my eyes. “Does this mean you’re… okay… with this? Us being together?”

“Yes. But I’m not hanging out with him. That’s not going to happen.”

“I agree.”

I stopped to think for a moment. There is no way my other friends will be this okay. He’s okay with it because he is my best friend. I can’t tell them…. I have to talk to Monty about this alone. Justin will understand… I think.

“You still with us Addison?” Justin asked.

“Yeah. I was just thinking. I’m glad you took this so well.”

“I mean, it caught me off guard I will admit that. But you’re my best friend Addy. You’ve stuck by me even when I wouldn’t have stuck by me. You got me through my mom, and detoxing, and moving in with the Jensen’s, and through rehab. I wouldn’t be here without you. I wouldn’t have pegged Monty as your type, but if he makes you happy, then that’s all I can hope for. However, if you hurt her, I will break you.”

I laughed at his redirect and tapped Monty’s shoulder, “that’s not going to happen. Would be an interesting scene, but highly unlikely.”

“Still stands though.”

“No, no, I get it. You want to protect her.”

“I do.” He checked the time, “I better get going. Dad made a roasted chicken for dinner and Clay has given up on the whole ‘he grew up with instability, so I need to save all the food for him’ thing.” He stood and reached down to hug me. I stood and hugged him tightly.

“You won’t tell Clay, will you?”

“No, your secret is safe with me. Don’t worry.” With that, he grabbed his bag and left the café, in search of Mr. Jensen’s famous roasted chicken.

I switched seats with Montgomery, so we were sitting face to face now. We sat in silence for a while, holding hands under the table and drinking out now half cold beverages. I decided now was probably the best time to bring up my reservations about telling my other friends about us. I scratched my arm, once again at a loss for words and panicking slightly

“Would… would you be okay with it if we… if we didn’t tell everyone else? Like my friends, I mean.”

Monty coughed, caught off guard. “Why wouldn’t we tell them?”

“Because they will hate me. And-and I know they won’t take it as well as Justin did. They will freak out.”

“But won’t they freak out more if you don’t tell them and they find out even later?”

“I would rather ask for forgiveness than permission Monty. They won’t understand. They will think this is just a fling. Or you’re just waiting to get me into bed and then you’ll leave in the morning, never to speak to me again.”

“I’ve already gotten you into bed.” He said, a triumphant smirk plastered on his face.

“I wasn’t exactly going to tell them that. It’s our private business.”

“I know. And I can assure you, this is no fling. Do you think I would be sitting here after talking to your best friend if it was a fling?”

“No, I don’t think that. But they will. Do you want to tell everyone else at school? Because I have a feeling you don’t.”

“Not… not really, no. It’s none of their business. They’re all nosy pricks to begin with. I don’t need them taking this and running with it and making it something it isn’t.”

“Exactly. I don’t want that either. And that is what is almost guaranteed to happen if we tell the rest of my friends. I love them. But they will have opinions that they will make very well-known and I don’t want to have to defend my choices to people I have no intention of seeing after graduation or outside of English class.”

Monty sat and thought for a moment, “Alright. We tell Scott, Charlie, and our parents. Everyone else can shove it.”

We called it a night shortly after our decision and I texted Justin to let him know.

Hey you. We decided not to tell the rest of my friends. I hope you understand. I hope you aren’t mad. I know you and Clay don’t have secrets, but it would really mean a lot to me if you kept this one.

Okay, I get it. It’s your relationship, tell who you want. Your secret is safe with me. Have a good night Addy.

Next on our list was Scott. I know Scott from classes we have shared and around school, but we aren’t exactly friends. More like acquaintances who share common interests. Or at least, common interest. He just, doesn’t know it yet. Monty texted me Sunday night to let me know that Scott agreed to chill with him after practice. At which point we could tell him about us. I wasn’t sure how Scott would take it. I wanted to assume he would be okay with it, but I know what they say about assumptions. From the interactions I had witnessed from across the hall or in the cafeteria, he seemed to genuinely care about Monty. But public interactions only tell you so much about a relationship. I would know.

Monday morning, I got ready as usual and went about my day. By lunch, I felt my nerves setting in. You don’t know Scott. For all you know, he could be just as bad as Bryce. Justin noticed my anxious demeanor and pulled me aside when the bell rang.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. We’re telling Scott today and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

“Scott is a good guy. He will be okay with it.” He assured me as he pulled me into a tight hug. The hug relaxed me enough that I could, at least, make it until the end of the day before practice when I was able to sneak in some boyfriend time.

I started shaking again the closer it got to the end of the day. The bell would ring at 3:20 and then it was an hour and forty minutes until the end of practice. I made a beeline for the back of the bleachers as soon as the bell rang. I was pacing back and forth when he arrived a couple of minutes later.

“Justin caught me and said you might be panicking. Come here.” He said, pulling me from my thoughts and tight against his chest. I breathed in his cologne and laundry soap scent. It calmed me immediately and I nodded against him.

“Okay. I’m good. You go to practice and I’ll meet you here after everyone leaves.” He gave me a quick kiss and ran off to the locker rooms to change.

To my surprise, when I looked up from my AP English Lit novel as I heard footsteps approaching, Monty was tailed by both Scott and Charlie. A little warning would be nice. Oh well. Might as well tell them both since they’re here. The two men looked confused as to why they were being dragged out to the secluded end of school property. Once they spotted me, I could tell Scott was beginning to put the pieces together.

“Hey Addy.” Monty said as he grabbed my book. “The Book Thief. AP English, or reading for fun?”

“Hey! I was reading that. It’s for English. Now give it back.” I scolded, feigning reaching up for the book.

“Nah. You need to learn to relax and live a little.”

“Fine. Have fun doing my reading assignment for me too then, smarty pants.”

He looked panicked, gulped, and handed it back to me. “Thank you.” Having achieved my goal, I finally turned my attention to the boys in front of me. “Hey Scott. Charlie.”

“Hey Addison.”

“’Sup Addy?”

“Ah, you know, pursing greater knowledge. Annoying my boyfriend. The usual.”

“Boy-boyfr-Monty? Huh.” Charlie stuttered.

“Cool. He needs someone to keep his head on straight.” Scott joked.

“I try my best.”

“Awesome. Are you guys like, telling people?”

“No. Just you guys, Coach, and Justin.” Monty spoke up.

“And our parents.” I added, mildly displeased at the thought.

“Well that’ll go well.” Scott said.

“I’m glad you guys are happy. Speaking of books though Addison, did you finish the reading for History?”

“Yeah. It was just about the driest thing I’ve ever read, why?”

“I was wondering if we could go over it? Make sure we are on the same page and right track?

“No problem Charlie. Meet me before class tomorrow morning?”

“Sure thing.”

Scott and Monty looked at each other, perplexed.

“What just happened?”

“I think your girlfriend just made a new friend.”

“Alright then. This went well.” I tried not to eavesdrop as he went on, “you’re okay with this?”

“Yeah of course man. If she makes you happy then I’m all for it. Carry on. Let me know how it goes with your parents and if you need anything after though.”

“I will. Thanks Scotty.”

We bid the boys goodbye after some quiet conversation amongst ourselves. “I think that went well.” I mused.

“Yeah. Now we just need to tackle the issue of our parents. Whose idea was it to save the hardest people for last again?”

“Don’t remind me. I’m not exactly chomping at the bit to meet your dad. And I know you’re not thrilled about meeting mine. Our moms should be okay though. I hope.”

“Weekend problem?”

“I think so. I need a breather from telling people for a few days. I’ll see if you can come over Friday after school?”

“Okay. You should be able to come by Saturday some time.”

“Looking forward to it. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay babe?”

“Yes, you will.” He said, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me in for a kiss. I was not, in fact, looking forward to meeting his parents.

The week passed in a blur. The only thing of note was my parents saying Friday worked for a friend to come over. Friday arrived much faster than I would have liked, but here we were. He had been to my house when my parents went out of town so there was no need to find him after school to give it to him. We agreed in the morning that we would meet at my place right after school so that if it all went to shit, he wouldn’t have to be subjected to dinner as well. If all went well, he was welcome to stay on the condition he helped me cook. I sat in my car and tapped my fingers nervously on the steering wheel. So far everyone we told had taken it very well. It will be fine. In any event, dad won’t kill him at least. Breathe. Relax. It’s fine. You’re fine. I was pulled from my thoughts by Montgomery tapping on my window. I pressed the button to lower my window and waited for him to speak.

“Are you going to sit there all night, or are we going to do this? Because I think it might be a little weird if I go in there by myself.”

“I’m coming. I just had to think for a minute is all.” I took another deep breath, “okay let’s do this.”

I stared at the door for longer than necessary before unlocking it. They’ll just come and open the door otherwise. Mom will think I forgot my key. I need to be ahead of this. I put my bag down on the chair and motioned for Monty to do the same. If everything goes well, we can do homework before dinner. Or I can vomit and he can hold my hair back. Either or really. We shared a look at the odd silence. “I’m home.” I called.

“I’m in the office sweetie. Your dad got stuck in traffic so he will be a few minutes late getting home. Offer your friend a drink or something, manners remember?”

“That’s great mom thanks.” I called again. “Manners, right. Hence you are in the office when we have company.” I muttered quietly. Monty bit back a laugh.

“Why do I feel like I need to whisper?”

“Because your introduction to my mother was literally her telling me to remember my manners and offer you a drink. Would you like one? A drink I mean. Soda was on sale, my dad likes off brand soda for some reason, so we have Twist Up, Sprite, multiple different types and flavours of Coke, Diet and regular Cola, Dr. Pepper and its off-brand counterpart, and Canadian iced tea from Mom’s girls trip last week to Vancouver. It’s not actually half bad. We also have juice and water.” I said as I led him through the main floor and dug around in the fridge.

“I’ll try this mystical foreign iced tea.”

“Sure thing. Would you like a glass?”

“Yeah that works.” He said getting up to grab one. When I gave him a look of panic, he raised his brow, “shit sorry.” He whispered. “what cupboard are they in Addison?” he asked, slightly louder than necessary.

“The top left beside the sink. Could you grab me one too?” He nodded and I opened the can for him. Grabbing the pineapple juice for myself, I poured a glass before going to get my book for English. He smirked at me. “What? I need to finish this book by Tuesday, and I’ve been a little distracted recently.”

“You? Distracted? Who are you and what have you done with my-”

“Who’s distracted?” My mom asked as she came into the kitchen. She looked at Monty and smiled kindly. At least she might be okay with this? “Hello dear.”

“Oh, I just have had a busy week is all. Assignments and papers have been taking away from book time. Not a worry Mom. I’ll have it done.”

“Hello Mrs. Hawthorne.”

“Call me Margot. My mother in law isn’t here. I can’t say I miss those days. I’m sorry, you are?”

“Montgomery, ma’am. I’m a friend of Addison’s.” He stuck out his hand for a shake. Who is this man and where did he come from? Mom took it and shook firmly.

“Sports or trades?”

“What?” I asked, not expecting that to be her first question.

“The callouses on his hands. Are they from sports or trade work?”

“Sports, ma’-.” My mother gave him a look, “Margot. I play Junior Varsity football in the fall and Junior Varsity baseball in the spring.”

“How wonderful. Are you good?”

“Coach Kerba says I’m one of the best defensive backs he’s seen in years. Coach Rick, well he doesn’t make his opinions on players as well known. I’ve heard talk of scouts coming next year but we will have to wait and see.”

“Well if your coach knows as much as I would think he does, then I have a feeling you’re going places. Did you want a snack before dinner? Brooks should be home soon.”

“I’m alright, thanks though.”

The three of us made quiet conversation while we waited for my dad to get home. Around 4:30, we heard the garage door open and I took a deep breath. Here we go….

“Sorry I’m late guys. There was an accident on the highway back into town so traffic was backed up like you wouldn’t believe.”

“We are in the kitchen Darling.”

Dad came in and set his briefcase down on the kitchen desk that mom wanted for some reason and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. I held my breath and resisted the urge to grab Monty’s hand. “Hello Addison’s friend.”

“Hello Mr. Hawthorne.”

“Brooks, please. Your name?”

“Montgomery, Sir.”

“Fine name.” Dad didn’t move to shake his hand. Monty wasn’t quite sure what to do. We fell into a very awkward and tense silence. I shared a look with mom, and she shrugged. When I turned back to dad, he seemed to be sizing Monty up. Oh boy. Monty and I looked at each other, his expression guarded. He nodded subtly, giving me the okay. Now or never. Just say it. Deal with the fallout after.

“He’s not my friend.” I blurted out. At my parents perplexed looks, I continued, “I mean, he is. But he’s not… not only my friend. He’s my,” I paused and took a breath. Monty put his hand on my knee to calm me. I started again, “he’s my boyfriend.” I closed my eyes, waiting for the inevitable explosion.

“I-I’m sorry it sounded like you just said this boy is your boyfriend. Implying you have a relationship with him. A relationship that is more than friendship.”

“Brooks….” My mom started, placing a hand on his shoulder.

“I am, Sir.”

Dad took a long sip of water before he said anything more. “Alright then. What would you kids like for dinner?”

“That… that’s it?” I asked.

“What more would you expect me to say Addison?”

“I don’t know. Maybe something along the lines of ‘how fast can you get the hell out of my house’?”

Monty laughed, “For the record, probably quite fast. JV sports and all.”

I gave him a playful incredulous look, “oh shhh. What do you want for dinner? We have things other than soda, I promise.”

We decided to do roasted pork tenderloin. My parents went to talk amongst themselves while Monty and I made dinner.

“I think that went well.”

“That was just the beginning. Don’t worry. There will be more to come. He will question you.”

“Lovely. What kind of answers is he expecting?”

“The kind that make you seem like a good person.”

“Oh, well in that case.” He muttered sarcastically. “You’re saying I shouldn’t tell them how I corrupted their precious little angel?”

I hit him playfully with the kitchen towel, “no you most certainly will not.”

He cornered me against the counter and leaned down to place a soft kiss to my lips after making sure my parents were occupied, before I could protest.

Dinner was a quiet affair for a time. We filled the silence with inane questions about sports and school. Finally, dad cut the random questions to ask Monty the big questions, “so, Monty. What are your intentions with my daughter?”

Monty choked a bit before speaking, “my intentions?”

“Yes. What are your intentions in dating my child?”

“I intend to make her happy. For as long as she will have me. She makes me feel like a better person.”

Dad mulled that answer over in his head before accepting it for now. “Have you put any thought into your plans for after graduation?”

“I’ve heard talk at practice and games that scouts are interested in me, so we will have to wait until next year for any more information on that. As far as schools I’d be interested in; LSU, OSU, and Penn State are in my top five.

Ole Miss is really good too. Their scholarships are good.”

“What would you study?”

“Maybe something in business? My dad is a tradesman but it’s not something I would necessarily want to do. If ball doesn’t work out, I don’t know if I’d want to work with my hands and be reminded of my dreams failing, you know?”

My dad hummed in response. The rest of dinner passed without incident. We confirmed plans to meet at Monet’s to grab a to go coffee before going to tackle his parents the following evening as he left. Happy joy. I can’t wait.

Monty could tell I was dreading this evening’s introduction. “You grip that cup any tighter and you’ll break it bookworm.”

I relaxed my grip slightly, “I know. I’m just nervous. I know they won’t like me.”

“Well if it makes you feel better, my dad doesn’t like anyone.”

“Now isn’t the time for joking Montgomery. I’m scared.”

He rubbed my arm gently, “I know. I just don’t know how to help is all.”

I smiled, unable to give him any answers.

We got to his house faster than I would have liked. I shook a bit in the passenger seat as he parked.

“Just have to rip off the band-aid, right? It’ll be over before you know it.”

“Mhmm.” I squeaked.

“I’ll be right here the whole time. You have nothing to worry about.”

His mom greeted us at the door, thankfully. “Hello dear. We are so glad you could come.” She said, smiling.

“Hello, Mrs. de la Cruz. Thank you for having me over.”

As we walked into the house, his father nodded at me from the table. Don’t look too happy there now man. She looked at her son expectantly.

“Oh, right. Mom, dad, this is Addison.” He paused to look at me, asking permission to go on. I nodded very slightly. “She’s my girlfriend.” He continued. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it as I awkwardly looked around the room. Someone please say something.

“That’s wonderful dear.”

His father merely grunted a gruff, “hello.” To me. This is going to go swimmingly. We stood in awkward silence for a while. Monty’s mom finished dinner, she declined my offer to help, while Mr. de la Cruz watched. I feel uncomfortable for her. After dinner was served and the usual pleasantries were shared, the focus was shifted to me. There were the typical questions, what my classes were like, my interests, hobbies, and the like. Things got interesting however when Mr. de la Cruz asked about my family. I wasn’t expecting that. “They’re British on my dad’s side. My grandparents immigrated before my dad was born.”

“British hmm?” He looked at Montgomery that didn’t sit well with me.

“Yes Sir.”

“How British are we talking here?”

“Sir, my last name is Hawthorne. It doesn’t get much more British than that. So, I’m sure you can imagine my Gran’s… uh… joy when my dad brought home a French Irish Catholic girl.”

“I’m sure that went fantastically.” His mom said.

“Oh yes. Couldn’t have gone worse than Christmases when my mom was writing her master’s thesis on the Irish War of Independence. I hear those were very quiet meals.”

“How does your grandmother feel about you?” His father asked.

“You mean my dad’s mum?” He nodded. “Well, I’m not entirely sure. I think there was talk about me possibly inheriting some of her estate, but it wouldn’t be what it was if I was a boy. Or more importantly to Gran, my mother wasn’t who she is. There might be occasional access to the house in England, since my dad was the only heir. Possibly some education paid for. But aside from that, she would probably prefer if I lived off of potatoes for the rest of my life.”

“And on your mother’s side?”

“My Nan likes me enough. She isn’t thrilled I haven’t gone back to visit her in a while, but I have school, so she understands.”

“Likes you… enough?”

“I don’t really remember when she lived States side. I was really young when she moved back to Ireland, so I don’t see her that often. My mom did say I will get the brownstone in Boston though. That counts for something, or so I’m told.”

“Rich people are weird.” Monty muttered under his breath.

“Trust me, I know. My dad had to talk Gran out of sending me to boarding school in Scotland when I was starting school. He had to fly to London to talk to her and put his foot down. She was concerned about my education going forward. And my parents aren’t rich Montgomery. My dad’s family is rich. He can’t touch any of it until Gran passes or is no longer of sound mind. If there is any left to him, of course. All his family did was pay for his business degree. Even that was like pulling teeth. My mom’s grandparents came here with nothing but their silverware and the clothes on their backs. They worked for everything they had. She grew up comfortable as a middle-class Bostonian who lived in a fancy house because there was no mortgage on it anymore. She definitely married up.”

“Going from a brownstone in Boston is marrying… up?” His father asked, surprised.

“My grandparents bought it in the fifties, so yes. She married a wealthy not quite nobleman British man. It is definitely marrying up. Something I have no intention of doing.”

“That’s fair then.” It did not sound fair going by his tone.

There was an awkward lull in the conversation. “What do your parents do dear?”

“My dad is a businessman; he owns a couple of investment firms in the city. I don’t really have much interest in what he does to be honest. My mom is a professor of history at UC Berkley. She got tenure a couple of years ago. She is actually on sabbatical right now though.”

“Oh, and how is that going for her?”

“It’s going alright. She doesn’t really talk about what she is researching though. Doesn’t want to jinx being published and whatnot.” “She getting paid?” His father asked.

I blinked for a moment, trying to determine if he was serious. When he didn’t continue, I assumed he was, “yes…. She is still working. Just not at the university. Berkley is good, they pay her full salary. Some schools only pay half and hope grants cover the rest of your expenses.”

He merely nodded in response. I wasn’t sure what else to say, so I played with the remaining food bits on my plate.

“What about school? Do you have any plans?”

“I guess. Depends who’s plans you want to hear about.”

“We have time.”

Monty squeezed my knee. He knew this was a touchy topic for me.

“Well, let’s see. My dad wants me to go to Oxford or Cambridge, but I have no interest in moving to England. Visiting on occasion is one thing. Living there for three years is something completely different. Mom wants me to go to Berkley because tuition would be free since she works there.”

“What do you want?”

“If I had my choice of schools, I would go to Ole Miss or NYU to study English with emphasis on creative writing.”

Mr. de la Cruz choked a bit, “English?”

“Yes. I’m not taking AP English Literature for some light reading. I actually enjoy it. Nothing concrete yet as far as plans go yet. I will do more research next year.”

He made a noise that sounded unimpressed. I don’t care about your damn opinion. The evening seemed to come to an end after that. There wasn’t much more to be said or done, so we left the awkward pause where it was. I bid them goodnight and Monty took me home.

“That wasn’t terrible.”

“Your dad thinks I’m not good enough for you.”

“No, I think it’s the opposite babe. He thinks you’re too good for me.”

“I sounded way too pretentious. They think I’m a spoiled little rich girl.”

“They don’t. And even if they did, I don’t care what my old man thinks. My mom likes you.”

“Well that’s good at least.” We drove the rest of the way to my place in silence, save for the odd reaction to something on the radio. When we arrived at my place, he walked me to the door and held me for a moment before we felt eyes on us. My parents were pretending not to look at us from the front window, and failing miserably. I laughed quietly and kissed his cheek softly before we said goodnight. I walked in the house and said hello to my parents before going upstairs and going to bed for the night. What an exhausting evening.

young richie with the rest of the losers, living happily with his friends, cracking jokes. sure he’d get an eye roll or a punch on the arm for some of them but that just made it funnier.

even if no one generally took him seriously, that was okay. he didn’t care for serious.

which is why it got harder for him to be around bill. bill who was way too old for his age. they clashed often, and who could ever forget the summer fight of ‘89?

the rest of the losers had sort of an unspoken agreement to keep bill and richie as far apart as possible ever since then. but sometimes it wasn’t enough.

sometimes richie joked too much. he was too immature. he didn’t know anything about the real world and it’s cruelties.

bill had glared at richie as he was tugged away by mike and bev. richie could hear ben saying to bill,

“don’t be so mean, he’s a nice enough guy.”

nice enough guy, richie scoffed as he stormed away.

he hadn’t realized someone had followed him out of bill’s basement until there came a flick to his arm. the glare he sent to his attacker had no effect at all seeing as it was eddie and all the smaller did was laugh.

“i come in peace.” eddie threw his hands up in surrender.

richie wanted to soften. he was mad at bill, not eddie. but for some reason the line on his forehead wouldn’t disappear.

the world was moving and before he could process the blurred images, he found himself sitting in the grass in bill’s backyard. eddie’s small hands still wrapped around his arm from where he pulled him.

“bill didn’t me-“

“yes he did.” richie was fucking tired. he didn’t meant this, she didn’t mean that.

if they didn’t mean it why’d they fucking say it?

“okay yeah he did. but he wasn’t right.”

richie spared a glance at eddie’s face only to be greeted with wide brown eyes shining with determination and.. something else. richie took note that eddie’s hands still rested on his bicep.

“look, i’m probably the last person you wanna hear this from but, i think you’re great.” eddie admitted softly. “sometimes your jokes are lame, but i’d deal with a day of bad jokes if it meant hanging out with you.”

richie felt his bottom lip wobble but he swallowed the feeling down.

“edward kaspbrak, are you in love with me?”

eddie burned a bright red, snatching his hands from richie’s arm before delivering a tiny punch.

“i’m trying to have a nice moment, jackass.”

richie cackled and threw his hands up in mock surrender before gathering eddie’s squirming form into his arms.

“listen if you wanna go on a date with me all you have to do is ask.”

“in your dreams” eddie grumbled, breaking free from richie’s hug before straightening out his now crumpled shirt. richie chuckled softly as he watched the smaller’s face.

“thank you, eddie. sorry for being a dick. bill just makes me so fucking mad sometimes. like yeah i get it, georgie’s gone, it’s sad. i’m not happy it happened, no one is. but that doesn’t mean the people around you can’t try to move on? enjoy their pathetic lives? make the most out of nothing?”

eddie was quiet for a moment and richie worried it meant he was upset with his confession. he wouldn’t take what he said back, because he knows he’s right. bill has every right to mourn and grieve. but lashing out of people for no fucking reason wont get you far.

a small warm hand rested on richie’s shoulder. richie turned his attention to the owner of said hand.

“for what it’s worth, ever since i’ve met you, i’ve enjoyed life a lot more.”

richie nearly choked on his own breath.

“it’s so fucking sappy i know but i mean it. and you know something? i believe, out of all of us, you’re going to go the farthest. really make something of yourself. i just know it. you’re too amazing not to.”

richie felt his eyes burning but honestly he didn’t care. he was too busy throwing his arms around eddie to care.

more importantly, he was too focused on eddie hugging him back to care.

richie sniffled softly from where his face was buried in eddie’s shoulder.

“i promise you i’ll make something of myself. i’ll get all the way to the top of the world. i’ll even make Bill my servant.”

eddie giggled, albeit muffled since he was pressed against richie’s chest.

“promise you’ll remember me when you’re at the top?”

richie pulled away from the hug, both hands holding onto eddie’s shoulders as he looked the smaller in the eye.

“i’m going to take you to the top with me. you’ll never leave my side. like my lil pocket companion.”

eddie swatted at richie playfully, a bashful smile on his face.

“you promise?”

“fuck yes i promise!” richie exclaimed before digging his hands through his pockets. eddie watched him with a single quirked eyebrow in curiosity. richie huffed as he pulled his hands out empty before zoning in on the frayed part of his shirt. there were several loose strings but there was one particular thread that was longer than the others.

without hesitation, richie reached down and yanked the thread. he ignored eddie’s cries of “be careful richie don’t tear your shirt!” to grab eddie’s left hand and rest it on his knee.

with careful movements, richie tied the thread around eddie’s ring finger before holding his hand up to show eddie his work.

“here. my promise to you, that i’ll take you with me. wherever i go.”

eddie smiled richie’s favorite kind of smile. that one smile where his eyes disappear and his cheeks bunch up.

“i’ll never take it off.”

in that moment, richie feels an urge but he can’t quite put a name to it. but he knows it gets stronger when he looks down at eddie’s lips.

but of course life is cruel.

fast forward a few weeks and richie is coming home to police cars in his drive way. immediately thinking the worse, someone has died, he darts into the house.

his mother is crying as the sheriff squares his shoulders and approaches her son.

“mr. tozier, is it true you attacked bill denbrough?”

richie has no fucking idea where this is coming from. he hasn’t seen bill all day. not to mention, he hadn’t seen the fucker all week.

“no it’s not true. why would i?”

“there’s been reports of you two having previous altercations.”

“well yeah, he’s a dick-“

“richard!” richie flinched at the harsh sharp tone of his father.

“if you don’t mind, i’d like to take you down to the station. for just a few more questions.”

that’s only the beginning. word travels fast in a small toxic town like derry. everyone heard of the tozier boy with a violent nature. even if richie screams it isn’t true.

he sees bill one day, just passing by in school. and richie is honestly surprised by the condition bill’s face is in. someone sure went to town on him. richie normally would be concerned, except for the fact that everyone thinks it’s his fault.

the scrutiny gets so bad that the toziers are practically forced out of town. but at that point richie couldn’t bring himself to care. all he can think about was the last time he would lay eyes on eddie.

the small boy would lock eyes with him in the hallway and make a bee line for him. richie wants to cry because it’s the first time someone isn’t looking at him like he’s a monster.

they’ve almost reached each other when stan plows his way through and crowd to drag a protesting eddie away. richie has half a mind to chase them down but he feels prying eyes on him everywhere.

every move he makes is examined thoroughly out of “the safety of others”. or whatever bullshit. so he watches as eddie is hauled away from richie. and that would be the last image he would have of the small boy.

fast forward 25 years and richie finds himself standing in front of the restaurant.

he isn’t the same richie the rest knew all those years ago.

he made a name for himself.

trashmouth.

it was nearly a household name at this point. he had a faithful fan base following him, a full bank account, and even a solid show on a mainstream channel in the works.

but even with all of that, there were still some loose ends keeping him up at nights.

quickly he found out that he remembered a lot more about the past than the others did, besides mike.

even bill didn’t remember him.

but richie sure as hell remembered. he never let himself forget.

he almost loses himself when he sees eddie, however. even moreso when it’s announced that eddie has since gotten married.

richie finds out why he was falsely accused of bill’s attack. turns out victor, as revenge for henry, planned on seeking out each loser. bill had been the first. victor had broken bill’s nose, collarbone, and one of his ribs. while victor had done his damage, bill manage to wrestle him to the edge of the quarry’s cliff, shoving him off. unfortunately, during winter time in derry, it was cold enough for the lake to freeze over multiple times.

bill had panicked. what would he tell everyone?

richie simply nodded, a calm smile over his lips as bill recalled the story. he’ll take care of that later.

fast forward a bit more, pennywise is successfully laid to rest. eddie narrowly avoids being impales due to richie shoving him out of the way.

a celebration is had down by the quarry and that’s where richie sees it. a piece of thread peeking out from under eddie’s wedding band.

richie corners eddie and forces the ring off of his finger so he could see. eddie lets him.

“i forgot why i had it on, but part of me knew to never take it off. so i never did. but now i know.” eddie cups richie’s face with his free hand.

anyways eddie divorces myra and marries richie. richie gets him a new ring, which eddie wears, but he keeps the thread on as well.

"Taylor!"

"What?" He grumbled as he dropped his hockey bag on the floor of the living room and headed towards the bedroom.

"Why are you so mad?!" You asked as you followed after him.

"Because since I have gotten home its been nothing but passive aggressiveness from you," he said, turning around to look at you.

You raised your eyebrows at him and shook your head. "Wow."

"Well it has!"

"No you're right. I have been but its because you wont even listen to me."

He just looked at you, waiting for you to continue.

"Every time you get home from the away games you get mad at me for calling you."

"You know I'm busy! It's not like I'm with some girl or something."

"I'm highly aware of this Taylor. But we are in a relationship here," you said motioning between the two of you. "You don't just stop communication for a period of time because you are away from home. What am I suppose to think?!"

"You know my job Y/N! I'm with the guys, or practicing, or at the game, or media. It never ends and when I get back to the hotel I just want to sleep."

"I understand this. I'm busy too! I have my own business I run for fuck sakes but I still find time for you and all your games and everything!"

"I never asked you to clear your schedule for me Y/N."

"I never said that you did! I did it because I love you. I just can't stand that you wont talk to me at all while you are gone. I mean sometimes you are gone for weeks! You are really going to stand here and tell me you cant find a second to text me something! Anything!"

He just stood there staring at you, not saying anything because he knew you were right but didn't want to admit it. After a long moment of silence he finally spoke "You seriously need to talk to me all the time?"

"No! I just sometimes need to know you're fucking OKAY or maybe just NEED TO TALK TO YOU," your voice was raised and you were shaking at this point.

"Oh! And you also texted me while I was gone saying how it was really funny how I was liking some other 'bitches' Instagram posts," he added, remembering something you had texted him the day before he got home.

"WELL YEAH! I see that you have time to like someones fucking Instagram post but not text me?!"

"No you're just jealous obviously," he mumbled as he turned around.

"Excuse me?!"

"You heard me."

"You are damn right I did! Fuck you Taylor I'm not jealous of some fake barbie bitch on Instagram. I'm pissed off that you don't make time for me after your countless promises that you will. I'm sick of it!"

"Yeah well me too!" he said, turning around and walking over to you.

The two of you froze when you realized what was going to happen next. You swallowed hard and looked down, avoiding any and all eye contact with him.

"I'm going to go," he said, softer than you thought he was going to. All you could do was nod.

You stood there in that same spot, not moving or looking up as he walked around you, grabbing his stuff and shoving it into one of his duffel bags. He walked by you and out of the bedroom door, his footsteps disappearing behind you before you heard the door open and close.

That was when you finally let yourself go and you collapsed on the bed, crying.

It had been a month since the fight and everything was just.. quiet without him here. He had come by to pick up the rest of his stuff the next day while you were at work and you hadn't really seen him since then. Of course you saw him when he played during the games but you tried to focus your attention on someone else for the most part. A lot of your mutual friends would check on you, which you appreciated a lot. You were glad that even though you weren't still together you weren't going to lose everyone that you had gotten close with. A few of them even informed you when there was a new girl but always reassured you that she was lame, or just a puck bunny, and it wouldn't last. They would constantly remind you that you were the best thing that he had and he would eventually realize it. You weren't so sure, but it didn't matter right now.

You were sitting on the couch just watching some TV. The girls had decided to go to the bar tonight and had invited you but you really weren't in the mood tonight. You just wanted to curl up on the couch, have some pop corn, and watch a bunch of horror movies.

Your phone buzzed on the coffee table at an intense part of the movie, causing you to jump. You groaned and leaned forward, grabbing it seeing that it was Brittney.

Britt: Y/N hes down here tonight. With her

Y/N: Ok? why do I care?

Britt: Hes been begging her to go and sing all damn night but she wont.

Y/N: And?

Britt: Don't you get it! Your singing was his favorite thing ever. He always would say he could listen to you for hours. He's trying to replace that part too.

Y/N: Shocker.

Britt: She just got another drink and I think after this one hits her she might actually say yes. come watch this train wreck please!

Y/N: Ughhh FINE I’ll be down in 10.

Britt: Alright. We're at the usual table.

It didn't take long for you to get ready. You didn't plan on staying long so a regular t shirt and pair of jeans was good enough. It was a bar anyways so who cared. The drive was short, thankfully the apartment was close to pretty much everything and you didn't plan on drinking anyways so there was no reason to walk. When you got there she was just starting a song. You hung out by the door not wanting Taylor to see you.

You had to see this.

She wasn't the worst you had ever heard, and being plastered probably was making it even worse than if she was sober, but she wasn't good. Not even close. Most of the people were ignoring her, or trying to.

Britt saw you and waved you over, thankfully Taylor didn't know you were here yet. You sneaked over and sat next to her in the booth. She was trying so hard to laugh quietly.

"I told you this was going to be good," she laughed.

You just nodded and continued to watch her. You looked over and saw the look on his face, it was a mix of disappointment and trying to be supportive. You could tell he missed your singing and wanting this chick to be able to do what you could but you knew that she couldn't. Which made you feel good but also kind of bad for her at the same time.

After she had walked off the stage you stood up and Britt grabbed you arm.

"Where are you going?!"

You just pulled your arm away and walked up to the stage. Mark, the head of the band that played, recognized you and announced that you were here. A few regulars cheered, you had been singing here since you turned 21 and was let in. Singing had been a passion of yours for as long as you could remember. You had sang with your mom when you were little and all throughout school. The bar had been the next stage for you after high school was over with, since you never really wanted to pursue a career in music.

"What song sweetie?" Mark asked you.

"Melissa Etheridge - I'm The Only One"

"Sounds good!" he said and turned to his band to let them know what song to start playing.

You nodded and turned around, looking out into the crowd and saw that Taylor’s mouth was wide open, eyes bulging. He was about to be in even more shock with the song choice you picked if he listened to the lyrics well enough at least. This should be good..

You listened to the intro play waiting for your cue. You took a deep breath and started singing.

"Please baby can't you see my mind's a burnin' hell I got razors a rippin' and tearin' and strippin' my heart apart as well,"

You looked out into the crowd as you sang, looking over at Britt and the rest of the girls who were smiling big, realizing what song this was. By the second verse they had gotten up and started dancing to the music which made you smile. You had yet to look over to see Taylor's face until you sang that one part of the song..

"Go on and hold her till the screaming is gone. Go on believe her when she tells you Nothing's wrong..." You took a deep breath before singing the next line. "But I'm the only one who'll walk across the fire for you And I'm the only one who'll drown in my desire for you. It's only fear that makes you run The demons that you're hiding from when all your promises are gone I'm the only oooooone" you belted out, watching his face. You could tell he was paying attention this time.

You sang the chorus a couple more times with the song before it ended. Everyone in the bar started clapping and you shakily set the mic back into the microphone stand. You smiled and waved at everyone.

Mark walked over to you, placing his hand on your back, noticing that you were a little shaky. He smiled "Wanna do another?"

"No that was good for now. Thanks guys," you smiled and waved to the band. You turned and started walking down the steps, Britt ran over and grabbed your arm to make sure you didn't fall.

"That. Was. Amazing. You saw his face right?!" She whispered as you walked back to their table and you just nodded your head.

You could feel Taylor's eyes on you the whole time that you walked to the table. You chanced a look over at him, seeing that the girl that he was with was getting mad and yelling at him for clearly paying more attention to you than her. He was completely ignoring the fact that she was even there and was just looking at you, his mouth opened a bit and his eyes filled with sadness.

That was the moment when you realized that your mutual friends were right.. He did actually realize that he lost out on the best thing that he ever had.

au where Harry starts volunteering at the public library over the summer because they have air-conditioning and free snacks for their staff, and isn't it better than being not allowed in the house during the day?

au where Harry bumps into Emily the muggle at the library and they bond over a stack of sci fi books because Emily-"No I don't really like fantasy books or magic"-Perkins is new and different from anyone in his life at Hogwarts or in his life at Privet Drive

au where Emily starts volunteering too and Harry downplays how the Dursleys treat him when she asked about his family because of course she would ask

emily hears all about ron and hermione and she laughs at Harry's stories, but turns her nose up when he tells her about some of his teachers

he has to change things for her ears of course. emily thinks draco is a rich racist rather than a pureblood supremacist, and harry is famous because his parents were star athletes at his fancy boarding school etc

au where harry spends some of his summer nights on Emily's couch because the one time he forgets his sweater at the library, she decides to return it herself and witnesses dudley shoving him into the doorway, and vernon's yells, and the slamming of doors

when emily finally got up the nerve to knock, its petunia who answers the door, and she can just tell that this woman isn’t the aunt harry talked about. emily’s mom understands harry’s situation and doesn't ask questions when harry showed up at 11 o'clock that night with a black eye and an owl cage

au where Harry falls in love with emily’s compassion and positivity because its refreshing after a school year of war and endless talk of Voldemort. the biggest thing on emily’s mind is how she’s going to get to uni, not whether or not she’ll make it to 18.

emily knows theres something big harry is dancing around but she knows better than to ask. weird things happen around him anyway, like the time she lost the charm on her necklace and spent half an hour walking around the library sidewalks looking for it, nearly driven to tears. harry's observant green eyes spotted it in less than a minute.

au where harry sends emily letters from hogwarts. she hears about Cedric dying in a freak sports accident. she hears about Umbridge and spends an entire night researching how to get a school teacher fired for discrimination and improper behavior. harry sends her candy with unfamiliar wrappers, and she trusted them all until one unforgettable toffee turned her breathe to smoke.

and then she begins to hear less from him

letters become scarce as the war that emily doesn’t know about gets worse. harry’s letters are monitored by the ministry, and after the dementor attack he's whisked away to "a long lost uncles house in the country". Sirius advised Harry not to keep contact because it could draw danger to her.

au where emily runs into him quite by accident in london right outside the leaky cauldron in the rain. she couldn't see the wizarding pub of course, but it was still surprising to Harry. Mrs. Weasley graciously gives him a few minutes to catch up with her, all the while looking around for death eaters who might happen upon them. This was just supposed to be a trip to get their school books.

emily doesn't know what to make of it. harry surrounded by unknown adults with strange clothing and words. she's happy to meet ron and hermione for the first time in person. and mad at harry for not telling her why he disappeared. "I thought you were really hurt!" she seethed, thinking of Dudleys tendency to pick on his cousin. Petunia Dursley refused to open the door to her now.

harry tells her he probably wont be able to see her til next summer and emily demands to know why. sirius nudges harry and they have to go theyre too vunerable out in the open and theres no time to say anything

so harry kisses her

right in front of ron and hermione, mrs Weasley, kingsley shacklebolt, sirius... Ron whistles and emily turns pink, but harry doesn't care. "Ill explain everything I promise". he says and he goes with them to the Leaky Cauldron. emily sees them all dissapear into thin air. She begins to cry and she doesnt know why. At least no one could tell in the rain.

au where sirius sends her the two way mirror in the mail anonymously. The only instruction was to send it back after she uses it. There's a dummy address attached that doesn’t show up on any maps. Harry activates it one evening while he's at school and scares the crap out of her. Shes confused because there arent any wires on the back and this isn't like any technology she's seen.

harry asks her not to question it and she hesitantly agrees. But Harry wont tell her whats been going on and emily is aware more than ever that there's a huge secret Harry isn't telling her. They talk almost every day through the mirror system, and that's when Emily begins to notice. harry would slip up and complain about nonsensical things.

"...was not ready for that pop quiz in Transfiguration, I copied of Hermione-"

"-Transfiguration?"

"-I mean history! Stupid history pop test. I swear..."

and he'd go on before she could ask more.

"Snape was a troll today!" he vented once. It was little terms like that that struck her as odd. Usually Harry was able to explain these little things away.

Until Seamus and Dean decided to have a duel in the his dorm. All Emily could see was bright red flashes and green explosions while boys yelled ancient latin phrases in the background. Harry shut off the mirror as soon as he could and ignored her attempts to call back.

His official excuse was someone set off a firework in his dorm. Emily didn't believe it for a second.

"Look, Emily, I really care about you," said Harry, and Emily blushed remembering that rainy day in london. They hadn't talked about it since.

"But there's some things I can't tell you." he hesitated. "Not yet at least."

Emily bit her lip.

"Can you at least let me know when you're in trouble, or hurt?"

harry was going to lie, but something in emilys tone made harry realize this was a deal breaker. He nodded once and brushed his dark unruly hair aside, revealing that curious lightning shaped scar. She nodded to herself and admitted,

"I really miss you."

Things got weirder after that. Harry talked to her more about what was going on but continually referenced 'the thing I can't tell you about'. Emily was frustrated. But she held her tongue. The school year seemed to go by so slowly.

au where harry comes home after his sixth year and knows nothing will ever be the same. Seeing Emily in person instead of the mirror was like he had taken a vial of felis felicius all over again. Harry spent the night on Emily's couch again but this time with Emily right next to him. Harry told her about what had happened to Dumbledore and the rest of the teachers.

"...and then he fell from the tower."

Emily held his hand. She assumed suicide and Harry wasn't going to correct her.

"Some of Draco's family came in. Totally torched the great hall."

Harry sounded so sad and broken all Emily could do was nod and hug him. They fell asleep like that, intertwined together, feeling complete for the first time in awhile. Harry woke first when Emily's mum left for work early in the morning. She gave him a knowing look and pointed to the bread box which had two muffins inside.

Harry couldn't go back to sleep so he stayed awake listening to Emily breathe. He had missed her so much. And this last year had put things into perspective.

au where harry realizes his 17th birthday meant he was leaving Privet Drive. and hopefully forever. Hermione was planning on obliviating her parents and sending them to a different continent. Ron was going off the grid and his family had a clone set up to take over his identity.

He knows the right thing to do.

au where harry spends his last summer in Surrey with Emily. They date properly and go to London for lunch with money Emily saved. They see cheap films at the dollar theater. Harry has nothing but stories for her. He sketches her favorite animals and folds paper into tiny stars. She keeps them all in a jar.

au where harry celebrates his birthday early in his bedroom with Emily and Hedwig. They sit on the dusty floor and blow out candles on a discount cake that was squashed in the middle. It was perfect.

au where Harry gives Emily a necklace from diagon alley even though it was his birthday they were celebrating and she definitely protested. A tiny golden snitch with silver wings went around her neck. Emily thought it was strange but she didn't ask because it was Harry's and it was beautiful.

they spent the next day together, hardly not touching one another in some way. Harry had a hand on her back when they walked around the library--the place they first met. Emily stroking his hair when they picnicked in the park. They held hands for days.

au where the eve of Harry's 17th birthday--his actual birthday--he takes her back to her apartment complex and they sit on the curb. Emily can tell Harry was sad about something.

"What's wrong, Harry?"

"I have something to tell you, Em." he sighed. "That thing I'm not supposed to tell you. Please, you have to keep an open mind. You see, I'm a..."

au where Harry told her everything. Emily listened carefully as he went over his entire teenage years. It all made sense and it terrified her. Harry had been in so much danger and he was so young and none of it was fair.

"...Hermione is going to obliviate her parents so they aren't targeted, which is really smart. Ron's in enough danger so his family is pretending he's sick and bedbound while we hunt for horcruxes."

Emily started. "Hunt for h-horcruxes? how long will you be gone?"

She didnt like the pain in his eyes.

"Harry?"

he didnt answer.

she gripped his arm and he looked down. He kissed the top of her head.

"I don't know if I'll even make it, Em." he admitted, saying the words out loud felt funny. but they were true.

"Harry-"

"And you're in danger as long as you know me."

"Harry-"

"And you can't protect yourself. And you have your sister and mother-"

"Harry James Potter!"

"This is the only way I can think of to k-keep you safe..." his voice broke in the middle and emily could hear the sob in his throat.

Emily was already crying. "Harry James Potter do not forget me!"

Harry held her tight. "Its more like a you-won't-remember-me kind of deal, love." Harry whispered.

"N-None of this is f-fair." she hiccuped. "You shouldn't have to do this. You can't just--I can't forget you."

au where Harry has to obliviate his muggle girlfriend

Harry let his wand slip from his shirt sleeve. He held her as she shook and sobbed.

"I'm so sorry Emily. I wish it could be different."

"Harry-"

"Obliviate..."

She stilled suddenly and Harry knew the spell worked. He withdrew his arm from around her and wiped his eyes. It was done. Irreversible. Harry kissed her cheek cringing at how lifeless she felt. He stood up and looked down at her frozen form sadly.

"I think I love you." he mumbled.

Emily was stirring so he slipped his wand in his back pocket.

Au where emily has a fuzzy recollection of dating some neighbor boy but it ended badly and stuff like that was best left forgotten right?

Au where emily stands up in front of a boy that she had known for almost nine years and didn’t recall any of it.

"Uh, hi. Excuse me, you're that Potter kid right?" Emily stood up sleepily. Her smile faltered when she saw Harry's stricken face.

"Jeez, are you alright?" she asked, her normally warm face full of worry and concern.

"Uh yea." Harry cracked a sad smile. "Just broke up with my girlfriend."

Her face contorted in sympathy. "Oh that's too bad! How long were you together?"

Harry almost lost it then. But he couldn’t--not yet. He forced himself to answer while she was still plastic and taking suggestions.

"A-About two years. We've been best friends since we were kids though."

"I'm sorry, mate." Emily reached up to brush her face and felt the tears she had been crying only moments before. "Whoa, why am I crying?"

"You just broke up with your boyfriend too. Kind of a weird bloke." he laughed shakily. “He had to go fight a war.”

"Oh. Am I sad about it? I don't feel sad."

"A little. But you don't want to talk about it." he replied simply.

"I don't want to talk about it." she repeated wiping the tears away and smiling a fake smile.

"It's getting late. You should go inside now."

"Okay." she said. "Sorry about your break up, Potter."

"Bye, Emily." he called, turning away before he lost it completely.

                                      Let’s Not Be Too Cliché

           Saying that Simon was happy would have been an understatement, delighted could have work; enchanted might have been the word. It wasn’t long ago that Jace, his boyfriend, had surprised him by announcing that he had reserved a small cottage in the mountain, for the two of them only. It was the first holidays they would spend together, away from New York.

            Jace was studying at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and Simon, though he had a band, was studying accounting in college, so they both liked to say that their meeting was a lucky hazard. And really, it was. If Simon’s best friend, Clary, hadn’t grown close to Jace’s brother, Alec, in art school, they would probably never have met. Not to mention that becoming friend with Alec was a real challenge Simon had yet to succeed. Nevertheless, Alec had accepted the relationship between him and Jace so Simon wasn’t about to complain about his ‘friendship’ with Alec, he was being tolerated and nothing more counted.

             “What are you thinking about? You are never so silent.”

             He almost jumped off his car sit.

             “Nothing.” He said quickly.

             He turned to Jace who had a teasing smile on his lips and was focused on the road, driving the car they had rent once they arrived at their destination. The blond man had insisted it would give them the liberty they need during their trip.

             “Nothing.” Jace repeated, amused. “Of course.”

            “Hey, don’t mock me!” Simon pouted. “I was only thinking about you?”

            “Really? Not about a Star Wars thing? A comic thing, like, the Captain America I saw you put discretely on your bag hoping I wont see?”

            “Listen, it’s not that I’m afraid to get bored, I just couldn’t leave the house without the Captain America edition you gifted for our first anniversary. And it’s my favourite, you know it right? I was just thinking that if we ever fight during the holidays, not that I think we will, but if, I will have not only something to read but something to remind me you love me.” He babbled embarrassed.

            “I love it when you do that.” Jace laughed softly.

            “When I do what?”

            “The rambling.”

             Simon huffed and crossed his arms.

             Jace chuckled, looking at Simon from the corner of his eyes. It was true though, he love it when his boyfriend’s filter just disappeared and when he started talking without being able to stop himself, sometimes barely making sense. It was annoying for most people, but Jace found it adorable, charming even. And it suited him so much, Simon and his nerdy side. For the rest of the road, Jace couldn’t stop smiling, as Simon was pouting, obviously trying hard not to talk again.

            Jace parked the car not far from them cottage. If it had been summer, they’d probably have been able to take the small way to it as well, but as there was a lot of snow, it was out of the question. Simon was beaming at the amount of snow, already talking about skiing and making a snow-man. Jace looked at him fondly, but they still were in the car and it was time to take their luggage up in the rented place so Jace, gently place on of his finger on Simon lips.

             “Calm down babe, let’s gets installed and after that, promise we’ll talk about our first activity. But for now, move your ass out of the car.”

             Simon stuck out his tongue and Jace rolled his eyes, holding back a laugh. His boyfriend was too adorable.

            As he took his bag, Jace wondered how he had gotten so lucky; he had had many girlfriends, some boyfriends, but had never really felt like love was something made for him, until Simon. Many thought they made an unlikely couple, but somehow, they just clicked. They completed each others in almost every ways. They matched because they brought balance in each others lives.

Simon was bringing Jace some craziness he didn’t know he desperately needed, he made living look so simple, and it was nice. There was time Simon could be seen as naïve, but not in a bad way, it was refreshing. With Simon, Jace knew he could be weak sometimes. On the other hand, Jace was giving Simon some strength and a lot of confidence. Jace was bold and straight forward, being with him had made Simon braver, or more than that, Simon had always been brave, Jace had just helped him to realise it. Jace had taught Simon to be more confident.

Together, they were perfectly balanced. Their couple was bringing both of them a perfect stability.

           The car was almost empty and Jace was bearing one of the last bags when Simon decided it was time to play. Emptying the car was kind of boring and he just wanted to have fun with his boyfriend. Biting his lower lip to hide a smile, Simon slipped away from Jace’s view and took some snow in his hands, making a big ball. Aiming as precisely as possible, he threw it at his boyfriend, hitting him right on the back.

            Jace turned immediately on his heels, narrowing his eyes, only to receive a new ball, on his face this time. But this time, Simon got spotted and Jace put his bag down, took snow on his hands, and started walking toward his boyfriend.

             “You are so dead, Lewis.” He said.

            Simon took the ball on his chest and let out a laugh before a second one hit him on the shoulder. A merciless war began. None of the men wanted to give up on victory and they were soon soaked from wet snow. But they didn’t care. They were laughing and they were happy. Eventually, Jace decided it was time to end it and he ran to his boyfriend, pushing him in the snow. Falling with him, he made sure to stay above him, holding Simon’s wrists on the snow; at each side of his head. It could have been an awkward position but it wasn’t, both of them were looking at the other, grinning, until Jace leant to kiss Simon.

             The kiss was slow and affectionate, Jace’s mouth warm against his lips, tongues caressing gently each others. It was the kind of kiss sending Simon straight to Heaven. The kind of kiss he wanted to last forever. But the snow was cold on his back, head and neck and he suddenly found himself shivering. Jace must have felt it too because he broke the kiss immediately and Simon almost whimpered, already missing the sensation.

             “Come on babe, let’s go home before you get sick”

             Simon sighed, but smiled as Jace gave him his hand to help him stand up. Ever the gentleman, Jace. Simon loved that about him.

            They took the last bags from the car and went straight up to the cottage. It was a cosy place, with a fire place, very cliché and very romantic. Simon took off his coat and shivered again. The wet snow had pierced through his clothes and he grimaced, feeling the cold, for real this time. Hurrying to his luggage, he took off his wet shirt, changing for a warmer and dry one.

            “See, if you had waited to get installed, we could have change for our snow suits and we wouldn’t have been like that.” Jace commented as he changed too.

            Simon pouted, Jace rolled his eyes.

            “Tell you what, you make us hot chocolate and I’ll make a fire.”

           “And we wrap ourselves on a blanket to cuddle?!” Simon asked excitedly as his face lit up.

            Jace shook his head slightly but the smile on his lips gave him away.

            “You’re impossible.”

 ***

             It didn’t take Jace long to make the fire, he was used to it, Alec and he had often did it in scoot camp. Fireplace, campfire, the only difference was the actual place where it was made. Jace took a few steps back and smiled proudly at himself.

             “See what I did babe?”

             Simon joined him, two cup in hands and grinned at him.

             “You’re the best, Captain.” He flattered.

             Simon put the two cup on the table and turned around looking for a blanket. Jace only looked at him, a smirk plastered on his face. He looked like a puppy happily chasing his tails and it was a sight that made Jace heart melt. How could one look so precious? It was unfair.

            He was still in his thoughts when he received the searched blanket in his face.

             “Come on, I want to cuddle.” Simon demanded.

             And seriously, who was Jace to refuse?

            He sat on the couch near the fire place, putting the blanket around his right side, opening the left one to welcome Simon in his arms before wrapping them up.

            Jace looked around him, and at the window, the snow had started falling.

             “Could we be more cliché?”  He asked groaning a bit.

            “Actually we could.”

             He glared at Simon who chuckled before pecking his lips.

             “See?”

            “Hmmm… Not convinced and… Come on, you call that a kiss?”

             Simon grinned this time and kissed Jace, open mouth, leaning even more against him, sliding a hand on his hair as his Jace’s one went on his back. He bitted slightly his boyfriend’s lower lip and Simon moaned softly and they broke the kiss for a second before kissing again, slower this time. None of them were cold anymore, but they didn’t throw away the blanket. They continued to kiss, soft and passionate. Jace smiled against his boyfriend’s lips; now, they couldn’t be more cliché.

"Damnit," Stiles growled as he shined his flashlight on the tree, a red 'x' in chalk written on the trunk. "We've passed this before."

Scott sighed as he stepped in front of another tree, "Twice."

Stiles huffed once more, lowering his flashlight and looking around. "I can't believe I'm about to say this, but maybe-"

"We need to split up." Scott winced at his own statement, "Again." He said a little quieter. Only three hours ago did they split up with Malia and Lydia. Scott hoped that they were having better luck then them.

"Alright," Stiles sighed heavier this time before shining his flashlight along the trees, "You go left, I go right?"

"Sounds good." Scott said, but the frown on his face said differently. He looked worried, a kind of look that Stiles was getting all too familiar with. Not just because of what they've been through, but because of the recent amount of supernatural creatures that have been wandering into Beacon Hills and causing complete and utter chaos. It was why they were in the woods in the first place - searching for the Nameton that, rumor had it at least, doubled in size and was causing these beings to go insane.

At least, that was the theory they were working with.

"Remember, at least every five minutes we say something in the walkie to make sure we don't get too far." Stiles said, waving his own walkie talkie in the air. Stiles wasn't entirely sure how much distance these things could take, but it was the best thing he could do on such short notice.

He couldn't exactly steal some walkie talkies from his dad - especially ever since they upgraded their security system since who knows how long - and he couldn't really tell his dad what he was doing, either. 

Well, he could, but lately his dad hasn't been very fond of him practically looking for danger.

"Got it." Scott said, "Let's try to meet up at your Jeep around midnight, okay?"

"Midnight? But-"

"Stiles, you remember we have a Chemistry test tomorrow, right?" 

He groaned, rolling his head around just to be dramatic, "OK, OK, fine." He huffed, "See you then," He said, spinning around and disappearing into the darkness. He could only hope that they would figure this out tonight. He really didn't want to search these woods again tomorrow after school, especially since in about a week they have a 3-day Lacrosse event out of town. Beacon Hills was screwed without them.

He sighed, lifting up the walkie to his mouth, "What happens if we don't find this damn tree stump?" He asked, but he had a feeling he knew the answer.

Supernatural beings that they've never seen before will keep coming, wreaking havoc on Beacon Hills because of the energy that is driving them insane.

There was silence for a moment followed by Scott's voice over the walkie.

"I thought you said every five minutes? Plus, don't we need to save our battery, and all?"

Stiles scoffed for a moment, shaking his head as he stepped over a giant root and continued looking around. The woods were pitch black because of the New Moon, but at least it wasn't a full moon.

"Uh...five minutes, starting now?" He questioned, clicking the button once again and adding, "Plus, you didn't answer my question."

He wasn't even sure why he was asking. He knew the answer. He didn't like the answer.

But, he kind of wanted to see the optimistic spin Scott would somehow put on it. 

"I don't know," He could hear the sigh, "But lets not waste our battery, ok?"

He sighed. He was right, but the fact that he wasn't even going to try to be optimistic really made Stiles feel...anxious.

Just focus on the task at hand, he told himself, eyeing the forest around him carefully. He had a feeling they weren't going to find it tonight, but here they were - wandering the woods alone and looking for something that only shows when it wants to be found.

"This is useless." Stiles stopped in his tracks and dropped his hand, a huff of frustration escaping his lips and his free hand running through his sweaty hair. If they couldn't find the Nameton, then the question was why did it  not  want to be found? Did the Nameton want a bunch of supernatural beings to come to Beacon Hills and murder people?

Why am I acting like this tree stump is a person? Stiles wondered as he continued to walk without even realizing it. 

"OK, think," Stiles said. It seemed to help if he thought out loud to himself. Not like anyone was around to hear him, anyway. "The druids believe that cutting or harming the tree would cause death and destruction to the town and surrounding locations, right? So either rumor is wrong and someone did something real stupid, or..." He stopped once again and huffed, "If the Nameton really did grow, why would it cause death and destruction? Why would it make supernatural beings go insane?" His eyebrows twitched together in confusion as he looked around, "And how come anyone in Scott's pack seems to be immune?"

Was it mercy? Was the tree angry for someone cutting it down all those years ago? After all, it was Scott's pack that brought the Nameton power again, but...

No. That didn't seem right. Because...why now?

"Why us?" Stiles mumbled to himself as he continued walking again. He wondered how often he kept stopping and going, but quickly pushed that thought away as his thoughts went back to the Nameton. If he could just figure out the reason why it grew and released basically a supernatural virus, maybe he could just figure out how to find it - and stop it.

Because right now, their current plan sucked. They were trying to find the Nameton which will then hopefully show them the reason why it grew.

"That's it." Stiles stopped once again, now in some kind of clearing. No Nameton, unfortunately. "Maybe that's why it gave us immunity. Maybe it does want to be found." He trailed off, eyebrows twitched together once again, "And maybe the reason why we haven't found it yet is because it wants a certain person to find it? But who..." He huffed, "Probably Scott." He rolled his eyes a little, "It's always Scott." He huffed a little in frustration. He might as well head back towards the Jeep. Even if he was wrong, they were probably better off looking for the Nameton during the day time, anyway.

He turned around, lifting the walkie to his lips and saying, "Hey, Scotty-" He stopped, hearing a snap somewhere in the distance. He let go of the button and stiffened, hoping beyond hope that it was some bunny or deer instead of a large predatory animal or worse - some supernatural creature lurking in the night.

He gulped, then nearly jumped when Scott replied in the walkie.

 "Found anything?"

He was silent, his heart thumping in his chest. His body felt frozen, but he tried to shake it off as he lifted the flashlight and shined it all around him.

"Stiles? You there?" 

He sighed with a sense of relief. "Yeah, I'm-" He turned back around and froze, finding himself starring down the barrel of a gun as his eyes widened in shock. "Wait, don't-"

Two shots rang out, and darkness soon followed.

He wasn't sure when he closed his eyes. All he knew was that his eyes felt unbearably heavy as he tried to open them. He wanted to sleep so bad, but given that he was currently looking at some branches, leaves, and beautiful stars in the sky...this wasn't really the place.

Either someone stole his tent (was he even camping?) or something bad happened. Was he injured? He wondered as he tried to sit up, but his eyes widened as pain erupted all over his body. It felt like...god, he wasn't even sure what it felt like. Like something was ripping through his freaking body. Like the thing that was inside was burning, only if it truly was, eventually it would be damaging his nerves and the pain would go away - only, this wasn't the case. It just kept burning and burning, yet the liquid that he could feel dripping down his chest and side was cooler. It felt like freezing cold water that left a trail of pain. 

What happened to him? He tried to think. Come on, think, think... he sucked in a deep breath and winced. Maybe a little whimper even escaped his lips.

Gun. That's right. He had turned around and was starring down the barrel of a gun, and he wasn't even sure who it was that shot him.

He wasn't even sure if he - or she - was still here. Maybe they were waiting...watching as he lied on the dirty ground bleeding to death from his wounds. Maybe they were waiting to finish the job.

Stiles winced again as he tried to lift his head. There was no way he was going to just sit here and die. He was at least going to attempt to do something, even if right now that means looking around to see if anyone was still here. Pain immediately erupted throughout his body once again, but this time he could feel where it hurt the most. His right hip was in agonizing pain, and it almost felt like the pain was right down to the bone. But the worst - and most concerning - was his chest, and after attempting to look around him and seeing nothing but trees, he looked down and felt his heart skip a beat at the gaping hole in his chest. 

Blood. There was so much blood.

"Ah!" He yelled as he fell to his back once again. His head was spinning, but he tried to blink the dizziness away. Maybe it would blink away the heaviness, as well, but it seemed a little useless as he found himself starring at the sky once again.

 I'm going to die.

The thought rang loud and clear in his head, and despite the fact that he thought that it was going to send him into a panic attack, he felt...calm, instead.

I'm going to die, he thought again. I'm going to see my mom again. I'm going to see Allison. I'm going to see Erica and Boyd and Heather and hell, even Aiden, even if I never really liked the bastard. I'm going to die.

I'm Okay. The words were quieter this time, and he felt his heart rate start to slow. He wasn't sure if that was because of the blood loss or because of the strange sense of peace and calmness he was feeling. He suddenly realized what Allison must have felt the day she died.

God, I'm going to die, he thought, I'm going to leave my dad all alone. The mourning of Allison was bad enough. The mourning of his own mother was terrible. He couldn't imagine how it was going to feel for his friends...his pack...his father when he dies.

 When.

Because he was going to die.

And he felt calm. He felt peaceful. And that was...that was wrong. That was wrong, right?

He took in a deep, shaky breath, a tear streaming down his cheek as the realization finally settled in.

He wasn't even sure who shot him. Or why.

He should have never split up. 

That was a dumb idea.

That was always a dumb idea.

Would Scott develop PTSD after this? Maybe he'll never let anyone else split up again. Maybe he'll be like one of those helicopter moms because he is absolutely terrified of losing someone else. 

He once heard that losing a pack member was like losing a limb, but Stiles couldn't remember who said that. He couldn't remember...he couldn't think. And yes, it was pointless and stupid to rack his brain to figure out who it was that said those words, but maybe he just wanted to cling to something - to anything - as he laid there on the forest floor dying.

It took a long moment (and he wasn't even entirely sure how long he was laying there, bleeding to death) to realize that he could hear someone's voice. For a moment, he thought his killer was back, but then he slowly started to register the voice and he wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or devastated. He didn't want Scott to hold him in his arms as he died. Not like Allison. 

But he also wanted to tell him that it will be OK.

He had to know.

He didn't realize how cold he felt until he moved his arm, feeling the dirt and grass beneath him until he finally found the walkie.

He could hear Scott panicking, his voice nothing but huffs, screams, and static. He pressed the button, his voice finally stopping as he slowly brought the walkie to his lips.

"S-Scott." He didn't mean to stutter. Maybe a part of him was hoping that he could just act like nothing happened, but he knew that wasn't a good idea. Scott no doubt heard the gunshots. "Scott...listen to me," He didn't release the button yet. He didn't want to hear Scott argue with him or question if he was OK. He didn't want to hear it. He just wanted to tell his best friend to please, please, take care of his father. To take care of the pack. Of himself. "It's OK." He gulped, feeling something in his throat. Blood, most likely. He was going to choke on his own blood. 

"Stiles-" He heard, realizing he accidently let go of the button. He quickly pressed it again and took in a deep breath. He could hear crackling in his chest, but chose to ignore it.

"Please take care...of my dad." He felt weak, but he tried to gather all of the energy he had to speak. To ask him one last thing. "Please...take care of the pack. And don't..." He gulped, "Don't ever...forget your dreams, buddy. Take care of the town and all...keep fighting those villains but...don't forget...you deserve to be happy, too. Scott..." He felt more tears escape his eyes, and slowly that feeling of peace was starting to disappear. It was there, but there was still that part of him that didn't want this. He didn't want to die. "Tell my dad I love him. Tell him I'm sorry. And Scott..." He trailed off, his hands growing weak and nearly letting go of the button, "I'll tell Allison you said hi." He chuckled, but it was a little weak. Maybe a little pathetic, too.

"Stiles, don't say that." He finally heard, "You aren't going to die, alright? I'm coming to find you - damnit where are you?" He trailed off, voice a little distant as he slowly started to panic, "Please...please don't die, Stiles. I can't lose you. I can't lose you, alright? So just...please stay awake. Don't die. Don't die!" His voice grew louder and louder, and Stiles wanted to say something to cheer him up. He wanted to say that he'll be OK, that he'll live, but he knew he couldn't. He couldn't because he was going to die, and because he couldn't even find the energy in him to hold up the walkie talkie anymore.

It slowly fell to the ground, Scott's voice seeming to grow more distant as everything grew quieter. He wasn't sure when he closed his eyes, but the realization that he was slowly slipping into sleep only hit him when he felt something wet on his face.

His eyes slowly fluttered open, but it seemed to take a long time from how heavy they were. As he attempted to pry them open, he could now feel what it was that was touching his face. 

A tongue.

A very wet, animalistic tongue.

Dear god, I'm going to get eaten alive. Can't I just die, first? He felt a small sense of panic as his eyes finally opened, but now the licking was over with and he couldn't see a damn thing.

"Wha-" He questioned, then suddenly felt pressure on his stomach. A wave of pain hit him once again and he let out a groan, attempting to lift his head and blink away the blurriness in his eyes. There was some sort of blob  sitting on top of him. An animal, of some sort, only it hasn't yet barred it's teeth and attempted to rip him apart.

He gulped, and the blurriness soon finally started to disappear as he could now see what it was standing on top of him.

A fox.

A very beautiful, very fluffy, black fox. He watched it carefully, wondering if he was imagining it. Maybe this is how death shows up - in a form of a fox. Or maybe this was just some sick joke sent from Lucifer himself because he was possessed by a fox before. 

But even so, as Stiles watched the animal stare at his wounds and appeared to be finding a comfortable position on top of him, he had a feeling this wasn't some animal looking for it's next meal. No, as a matter of fact, it almost looked like it was...

It pressed against the bullet hole in his chest, and he immediately hissed.

Was it trying to stop the bleeding?

Oh, the irony. But now wasn't really the time. Maybe he'll laugh about this later.

 Later.

Right. He almost forgot that he was dying.

"Hey...there...little guy." He mumbled, and he couldn't help but notice by the way he spoke that he sounded both incredibly weak and perhaps a little drunk. And he felt drunk as he watched the fox tilt it's head like a dog. "Girl?" He questioned. The fox lowered it's - her - head and whined. Almost like a dog watching it's owner die. It was sad, really, but for him it was just...incredibly weird.

Suddenly, he couldn't help but notice he wasn't in pain anymore. Weak still, but not exactly in pain. And he was curious - to his very last dying breath, apparently - as he sat up a little and noticed that the pain was more like a dull ache now.

"You aren't...a normal...fox." He realized. He wasn't sure whether to feel terrified or not. Clearly it wasn't here to harm but...would it...?

Was it an alpha?

His heart raced, but it was still way too slow.

The fox looked up at him, letting out another whine, before it's eyes suddenly glowed red.

His head immediately fell backwards and he slammed his eyes closed, "Please no." He panicked. Just a little. "Don't turn me. Don't bite me please." He begged, and he wondered how much he meant it.

No.

No, he did mean it. He didn't want the bite. He didn't want to be turned into a werewolf or werefox or whatever. Getting possessed by a fox was bad enough, and honestly, being a werewolf (or werefox, in this case) didn't seem so different. The wolf was still blood-thirsty and basically possessing  the human.

No. He didn't want that. And he definitely didn't want to see the look on his dad's face if he finds out he was turned into some animal. Some supernatural creature.

Dear god, when was he going to slip into the darkness? Into peaceful oblivion? When was all of this going to be over? And where the hell was Scotty?  Not like he wanted him to watch him die, but...

Still, it was odd, but suddenly all he could think about was one thing. One  place. One reason why Scott hasn't found him yet.

And as Stiles turned his head, feeling the fox's tongue on his cheek once again, he noticed it. The giant tree stump, though in the distance, looked like it was just  illuminated by non-existent moonlight.

It was me, he realized.  The Nameton wanted me to find it?

Maybe he was wrong about his little theory, but it was all he had right now. He was clinging to it like he should be clinging to life, right now.

This didn't make sense. None of this made sense.

Did it lure me here to die?  Stiles wondered as he looked back at the fox. His heart was no longer beating rapidly, his breathing now slower than what was comfortable, but even in this state - somewhere between life and death, almost - he knew.

It lured me here to get turned, he thought, and it was with almost 100% certainty, even if there was no evidence to suggest he was right - he knew, just knew he was right. It was a gut feeling that was stronger than anything he ever felt in his life. Stronger than the feeling that his best friend was turning into a werewolf, way back when.

Stronger than the feeling that something was incredibly wrong before he realized he was possessed by the Nogitsune.

Stronger than the feeling that chaos was coming right before chaos always came.

He wasn't going to die.

He was going to get turned.

"Shit." He muttered weakly to himself, then watched as the fox whined, it's eyes glowing so bright as it crawled a little closer and began licking his neck as if preparing for the bite.

His eyes slammed closed once again as he prepared himself for what he knew was coming. He didn't move, knowing that fighting in his condition was absolutely useless, and practically counted the seconds that ticked by as he waited for the sharp pain that was sure to come.

 "Stiles."

He opened his eyes and felt his body practically turn to stone.

"Fuck."
