what if i wrote an IT competitive swimming AU... what then...

i have so many fic ideas and so little time... in the meantime... the losers as competitive swimmers (this is so niche oh my god)

lots of hyperspecific headcanons can be found under the cut lol

mike hanlon: he's a butterflyer mainly but also strong in backstroke. weirdly good at counting his strokes and has never hit his head going into the wall on backstroke. his favorite race is the 100 fly, but he's not the type to complain when his coach puts him in the 200 fly or an IM race (IM is individual medley, it means all the strokes back to back in one race). he brings snacks to share at competitions but doesn't let anyone eat on deck. got into competitive swimming fairly late (about 14) because he enjoyed doing the distance swim when he was getting his lifeguard qualifications. he's a strong swimmer and probably has the most endurance out of the group, but not in a long distance race kinda way, more in a "i could swim across the lake if push comes to shove" kinda way. he's the only one who can correctly keep track of what rep they're on during training, everyone else always turns to him when asked.

bill denbrough: he's been with the swim club since he was seven and has basically always been a freestyle (basically the same as frontcrawl, except you can technically do whatever you want. everyone does frontcrawl though) sprinter. excels at the 50m freestyle sprint and broke the club record for it when he was seventeen. he leads warmup and organizes everyone for cheers and travel competitions. dislikes breaststroke but is frustratingly good at it so his coach frequently makes him swim it. can't stop hitting his head on the wall on backstroke and has been banned from doing crossover turns (special turn between backstroke and breaststroke used in IM, your face gets very close to the wall) in races after an unfortunate incident involving his face and the wall. he's responsible for drawing mini heat sheets (packets of paper with all of the race information, including athlete names and lanes) on everyones arms, he does a little grid too, its all very professional. he is the keeper of the spare caps and goggles. when they were younger he kept track of everyone during warm-up to ensure no one got trampled in the mess of people.

stanley uris: backstroker through and through, wishes there was a 400m backstroke, once his coach put him in the 400m freestyle and he did backstroke out of spite. his best race is the 200 backstroke. he takes every opportunity presented to him to talk shit about butterfly. makes sure the losers don't miss their races and is the only person allowed to touch the heat sheet. you know he cares because he highlights all the losers names in colorcoded markers on his heat sheet. he's not here to be the best he's just here to humble richie at backstroke and have fun with his friends. he gets split times for the other losers and keeps track of everyones personal best and qualifying times. he complains his friends are the ones always nearly missing their races but he has been known to get distracted highlighting everyones names on the heat sheets when he really should be warming up.

beverly marsh: good at every stroke so mainly an IMer but she's a big fan of 200m races which disturbs everyone around her (200m races are detested by many for being an awkward distance between a sprint and long distance). is really good at dives and turns and has on more than one occasion gotten disqualified for going too far under water off the dive. has an extremely powerful kick but frequently forgets to put strength into her pulls. if richie's doing backstroke in an edge lane she will lean over the edge of the pool and mimic kicking with her arms ("kick faster!") because she knows he hates it. has planned 99% of team building exercises which always go terribly wrong in some way but she finds a way to save them from disaster. past team building activities have included: laser tag, bowling, and tracking down a ghost house in the middle of the woods. this last one was not well received but they did find the house so she won.

ben hanscom: long distance swimming legend, he's a freestyler and his best race is the 1500m. incredible at knowing what pace to go and recognizing how much energy he has left so he doesn't go too slow off the start but doesn't die in the first half either. is strongest in the third quarter of a race and tends to overtake people during this period because he doesn't let the pressure get to him (the third quarter is typically the hardest and most stressful of the race, you are tired and likely in pain, but don't yet have the adrenaline rush from being in the final stretch). he used to crash and burn during the third quarter, but one day something just kind of clicked and he got it. he still gets nervous before races but when he's in the water he doesn't falter. he always gets the best spots at meets and the losers build bag forts in the bleachers to camp out in for the long stretches between races. he also always finds the best places to hangout outside the pool deck while the losers are waiting for finals to start.

richie tozier: mainly a flyer but he got really tall when he was sixteen and his coach started putting him in more backstroke races, he's pretty even between the two strokes at this point and does a lot of IM. number one breaststroke hater in the WORLD, it hurts his knees because he does it wrong but no matter what corrections people make he can't get it right. does not understand how people like breaststroke and isn't convinced it doesn't hurt for everybody. cheers a ridiculous amount. his voice is always hoarse for days after a competition because he cheers so loudly. he's always leading group cheers, even when he was a crackly-voiced 13 year old he was insisting he lead cheers. he's really loud because of it and is great at throwing his voice over the noise of the pool. they're always at races until the very end because ben is usually in the 1500 and richie will cheer for nearly 19 minutes until all the losers are rushing to the end of ben's lane to get him water and help him stay standing and richie can just give him a thumbs up because his voice is totally gone.

eddie kaspbrak: was a breaststroker for most of his life until one day his coach was like. yknow what. fuck you. butterfly time. and now he's a flyer. his best race is the 200IM though and he hates 200m fly. he gets really in his head about it and has on multiple occasions completely died in the third quarter because he's so anxious. he always gets out of the pool after 200m flys feeling like he's going to black out because he's so stressed about it. every once in a blue moon though he just doesn't stress for some unknown reason and does amazing. loses his mind at the losers when they don't wear flipflops on deck or in the showers. like do they know how gross pool decks are? no they want infections? if they're doing single length sprints during practice the other losers will walk his flip flops to the other end of the pool so he doesn't have to touch the deck with his bare feet. you would think swimming would be the most miserable sport in the world for him due to the general... disgustingness... of pools but he loves the sport so much that it manages to outweigh his neuroses most of the time. hates backstroke, its a stupid stroke and he keeps getting water up his nose and what if he hits his head, why do mike, stan, and richie even stand it?

also i did my best to explain anything that might be unintelligible if you weren't deep in the trenches of competitive swimming as a teenager but if anyone has questions, either about the AU, or just clarifications about swim racing in general, feel free to ask! i love talking about this stuff.

i want zombie apocalypse au with losers and i'm gonna do it OKAY (i am very excited to share it AND i will post more about this au later! drawings too hehe)

this was a virus that spread worldwide. no one knows for sure who spread it, so it's pretty much the usual: it's either the government's fault or someone ate/had sex with an ancient animal. people neglected this virus at first, and, well, we all remember how covid was

it was a nightmare, but the losers survived it, all of them. first they had to find each other, then they had to find a safe place to stay, and after that, of course, they had to survive. they travelled all over maine, avoiding raiders and zombie hordes, but eventually they found a place that felt safe (more or less)

now that all this zombie stuff has become part of their lives, the losers live together in their camp. they were in their mid 20's when it happened and they are now ~30 yo

stanley and bill were dating when the virus started, they lived together with their dog and were happy. stanley's family was one of the first to suffer from the virus, because the synagogue in derry was one of the first places where the disease spread, and stanley had to kill his own parents (he was going to visit them when they attacked him). stanley is the most traumatized one of all the losers. he is constantly trying to make his life look like it was before, but it's really hard to maintain. bill is silent about all this mess, he just wants his friends and family to be healthy and safe. bill suffers from anxiety but he doesn't talk about it. their dog is alive and she's a happy little girl! bill's parents are alive too. they live in the government camp, bill decided to stay with stanley and the other losers because this camp could only take one more person. the government camp sucks anyway

richie was the only one who was out of town at the time. he and eddie were still hiding their feelings from each other, but they're dating now. richie was in new york and he was SO scared for himself, his family and of course his losers. eddie and the others tried to contact richie while it was still possible, but it took them about 6 months to find him. richie's parents died when he was 28-30. it had nothing to do with the virus, but richie is devastated anyway; he's trying to hide it. richie's little sister lives in a camp with her now husband. eddie was terrified in the beginning, and he surely still is. he was the first one to start looking for richie, and his shit wasn't put together until all the losers could be reunited. eddie and his mother were separated when she tried to make him to go to the government camp with her, but he wouldn't go without richie and the others. he doesn't know where she is now. eddie was infected with the virus (he was bitten in the arm)

ben and beverly got married a year before all this started. they were just about to buy a house and live on their own, as grownups, and ben jokes about it now and then — it's a good thing they didn't spend all the money on the mortgage, not that money means anything now. beverly promised herself she'd quit smoking, but she's smoking again. she thinks a lot about her father, she has no idea where he is or what happened to him as they haven't spoken in ages. bev shifts her attention to taking care of the losers and killing zombies. ben tries to keep himself sane by reading a lot and working even more. he's always there for beverly yet he doesn't know how to make her feel less stressed. his mother was infected and didn't make it

mike was born for this kind of thing. he knows everything he needs to survive, and he's the most resilient about what's going on in the world. yet he's full of regret — he was just about to move away from derry, he had so many plans, and they all collapsed when he saw the first infected with his own eyes. he lost his family when their camp was taken over by raiders

so it's like... a thirst trap post, just to point out the main events! i wanna write much more later so wait for me ;____;

possible Kay/Audra scenarios: 

book!canon or integrating elements of the book into movie!canon: after Tom Rogan makes Kay reveal Bev’s whereabouts and leaves for Derry, Kay follows him because she cannot contact Bev by phone but still wants to protect her (and is pretty sure at that point that if Tom finds Bev, he will literally kill her). She meets Audra either on the plane or in the airport and, as they find out that the people each of them is looking for know each other and would probably be together somewhere in Derry, they decide to search for the Losers together. In this AU, Tom does not kidnap Audra, because she and Kay manage to fight him off, knock him senseless, and continue looking for Bev and Bill, and then they either join the Losers in the sewers, or meet them after It is defeated. Or they accidentally kill Tom in self-defense, and of course they’re scared because oh fuck, oh shit, we killed a man (book!Eddie or movie!Richie, probably: wow same), but then - again, borrowing elements from the novel - Derry starts to collapse and Tom’s body is buried under the ruins. Then they find the Losers and Audra is reunited with Bill, but some time after they leave Derry they separate, and she and Kay start growing closer 

movie!canon: post-Chapter Two, the marriage of Bill and Audra is falling apart for a number of reasons, from their differences in relation to work (she’s obviously mad at him for disappearing from the film set when they needed him) to the simple fact that they don’t love each other anymore. At the same time, they remain on very friendly terms because they still care about each other a lot, and that’s how she meets and befriends his new old childhood friends (and if that Mike friend might be part of the reason her husband is willing to divorce her, then, well, she can see why), and then one day Beverly brings this gorgeous friend of hers to a meeting (Kay, probably: are you finally introducing me to your harem, Beverly my love?) and Audra is like oh

1. Which of your own finished fics have you re-read the most?

Probably Intervening Processes (We’ve Got This). A Suicide Squad inspired Sterek fic that I’ve had a half-written sequel to in the works. It has its flaws, but I still really like it and when in a Teen Wolf mood, work on its sequel.

2. Which of your own finished fics will you probably never read again because then you’ll have to remember how much you don’t like it/how hard it was to write/how annoying the fandom was/some other negative association?

iLet Him (no link because I’m embarrassed I ever wrote it, but I also refuse to take it down because I know what its like to lose a fic you enjoy reading and if even one person likes it then I won’t take it away from them). Its an iCarly fanfic I wrote back in 2009. All my fics from then are not really good, although a few are OK, but this one was the first one to get a less than positive review. I’ve developed thicker skin since then but at the time it hurt that someone disliked it enough to tell me it was bad.

3. You can only use one musical artist or poet just for lyric titles for the rest of your life: who would it be?

I am so bad with knowing artists its not even funny. I wanna says Grandson or Panic!At The Disco. I feel like Panic has a lot of interestingly worded lines that would be fun to play with as titles, but I think Grandson’s lyrics might fit my fics a little better maybe? As for poets... I’m even worse at poets than I am at song artists. At least when I hear a song I like I can glance at the screen and see the singer’s/band’s name, when I read a poem I like I don’t even notice who wrote it, I just enjoy how it makes me feel.

4. What’s your favorite opening line you’ve ever written?

I went back and read all my opening lines and I don’t actual have strong feelings about any of them. :/ There are plenty of whole opening paragraphs I like well enough, but opening first lines are kind of my achilles heel. If I had to pick the the ones I felt were the best of an otherwise bland bunch, I’d go with:

Baby, We’re a Cliche: “The first time Derek is set to meet someone at a bar, and really he blames Erica for the entire mess of things thankyouverymuch, it goes exactly as well as he expects.”

and

She Really Is a Funny Girl: “Emma Swan's arrival spawned many seemingly coincidental occurrences. Unspoken, and therefore unconnected, by the people of Storybrooke.” (Which is technically more than one line, but if I had written it today I’d have made it one sentence.)

5. What’s your favorite closing line you’ve ever written?

I just realized I’d been assuming this and number four are referring to the first line of the first chapter and last line of the last chapter, when technically I could have translated either questions as the first or last line of any scene and/or chapter I wished. Oh well.

You’re a Hurricane, I’m a Flood: “He should let her go. He won't, but he should.” as it perfectly sums up how I feel about the Trevor/Rene relationship on the show Travelers.

6. Which character would you include in more fics if you felt more confident writing them?

Shirley Bennet from Community. I find myself finding excuses for her to be elsewhere because I feel like I can’t get her down quite right. The closest I’ve ever gotten to getting her right is in an AU where she’s a cop trying to arrest Jeff and Britta. It doesn’t make it any easier that with seven main characters, its pretty easy to shove her to the back during scenes. I don’t want to do that Shirley though, I like her too much to not at least try to include her.

7. What is one plot point or character or title you would change for any of your finished fics?

Finished fic? Maybe the title Cake Batter (no link, sorry) because it was something that only made sense to me, a little inside joke that was then separated by about three degrees, and I know I could have done better on coming up with a title.

Unfinished, I’ve been itching to rewrite All the Little Pieces as I was experimenting with writing styles while in the thick of it and am unhappy with quite a few chapters. I can barely bring myself to work on the next chapters in it because the fact that it needs fixing keeps distracting me. I also wish I would have stuck with my original scene for when Richie learns Kate is with Seth/at Uncle Eddie’s in A Lesson in Navigation, but I completely changed the entire thing before I even got to the chapter because of a line I’d written in an already posted chapter and instead of fixing what Seth said and adding an A/N to clear up any confusion, I pulled my hair out trying to make the new scene work and while I feel I’ve managed to keep it from being a total disaster, the original one was much better.

Shortly after I got into IT (2017) I had the idea to make an Until Dawn au because I LOVE that game and I thought it’d work really well so today I finally started working on the rough plans, here’s how the prologue will go (under a read more because wow this is long, there’s more about the rest of the fic at the end)

-it starts out in December 2008, Bill's family planned on renting out a cabin on a Canadian ski hill for Christmas holidays and in order to make him happy his parents talked with the other losers' parents and they all split the bill to send all their kids up for two weeks of fun in the biggest lodge house available

-and it is HUGE and grand and secluded away from the smaller cabins closer to the ski lodge/hills, so much so that they need a lift to get back and forth and Richie holds onto a nervous and panicking Eddie the entire way up

-so they all go up and decide to have Christmas together and mostly the parents go off and have fun and leave the kids to play on the mountain when they're not skiing because too young, and they all take turns watching over Georgie, it's a lot of fun

-Bill and Georgie are used to the cold because they go every year and everyone else is either underdressed (Richie) or overdressed (Eddie), so the first day there is filled with snowball fights and hot chocolate by the fire when Eddie starts to yell that he's definitely catching a cold

-there's tons of board games and video games to play provided by the owners and when they're not outside they're crowded around the TV, unless Bill's parents are out, then they're totally playing hide and seek because there's so many places to hide

-one particularly snowy day they're all forced to stay inside and when they become too bored with watching the same Christmas movie over and over they all gather in the living room with pizza and a mountain of snacks, and Ben and Mike gather around the old dusty books on the bottom shelf of the old bookcase, and everyone but Bev notices how Ben keeps looking up at her

-Richie jumps on one of the two loveseats with Eddie to bother him as he plays on Bill's DS, but eventually they get comfortable enough where Richie is just sideways over Eddie and the arm of the chair and Eddie's still playing while he watches with a blush on his face

-Bill and Bev and Georgie are working on one of the 1000 piece puzzles on the large coffee table and like Ben, Bill keeps sneaking glances at her that she sneaks back and they're both blushing

-no one notices when Stan's eyes glance up over his bird book to look at Bill

-Christmas day is AMAZING and everyone feels so loved and happy and it's literal Perfection

-Bill gets Georgie gets a new sled and he wants to ride it CONSTANTLY but Bill spends a little too much time outside leading up to New Years and has to go to bed early because he's feeling sick

-all the losers decide to stay in after Bill heads upstairs and have a game tournament to celebrate the countdown and Georgie thinks that's boring because while he's offered a seat he'd rather play outside

-the parents say they're going out for a new year's party and tell them all to keep a good eye on Georgie and they promise but he ends up slipping away to get Bill to come outside with him. Bill refuses, and he goes outside by himself

-it's dark by this point and he ends up going a little too far, falls off the sled, and loses it in the trees

-feeling bad because his parents (especially Bill) are gunna be so mad, he pulls out his emergencies-only Nokia flip phone to search the area, and it's cold and dark and the snow is coming down heavier now as he goes deeper in

-he stops when he reaches what appears to be a burrow and he sees the sled marks leading into it and he just starts sobbing because that sled is fuckin GONE son

-suddenly he sees two eyes staring at him and at first he thinks it's some kind of animal and he gets ready to book it but a voice comes out and he stops because what the hell is this person trapped did they need help?

-and of course it's Pennywise and IT shows Georgie that IT found his sled and Georgie asks if he's stuck and if he should get his dad and IT says no, he lives down there in the mines, and Georgie gets curious and asks about the mines

-they're all underneath the mountain, like a great big spider web hidden in the snow, and Georgie feels uneasy and asks again why he lives down there

-and Pennywise just stares at him and says that his circus was travelling to the ski lodge when they fell in, and now they all live down there, the whole circus

-and suddenly Georgie can smell it drifting up from the burrow, and he feels a warm summer's breeze and instantly recalls all his Derry Fair memories

-and then it's gone and he's definitely uneasy and says that he'd better get back home to Bill, he must be worried about him

-Pennywise asks who Bill is and Georgie says his brother without thinking, because talking about Bill makes him feel less afraid, and Pennywise says that he should invite all his friends to the circus, it's always waiting for new visitors

-Georgie just says no one would believe him if he said there was a circus under the mountain

-so Pennywise offers him a balloon as proof, and it floats up out of the burrow, not at all affected by the wind or the cold, and when Georgie reaches for it Pennywise lets it go and it floats up and up until it gets caught in a high branch

-Pennywise apologizes, it's so cold his hands are going numb, and IT asks if Georgie wants a new one

-Georgie says no, and Pennywise offers the sled again, holding it up for him to see, and Georgie knows it's his, he can see where he and Bill wrote S.S. GEORGIE on the side

-so Georgie goes to reach for it before saying maybe he'd get it tomorrow, it was getting late and he wasn't supposed to take things from strangers, and a look of SOMETHING flashes across IT's face before IT formally introduces ITself as Pennywise, and introduces Georgie for him, and ITs desperation to get him to stay was very apparent, and while he can't deny they aren't strangers he still wants to leave, so he plans on grabbing the sled as fast as possible in the hopes that IT's hands are as numb as IT said

-Pennywise holds out the sled and he reaches for it, but every time he's about to grab it it moves further back and he has to get down further until it's getting hard to see through his phone's weak light

-he grabs hold and Pennywise grabs him, and Georgie's screams echo over the mountain as his arm is torn off

-the cold numbs the burning wound and he kicks off from the burrow to get up, dropping his phone in the process, but IT grabs his ankle and drags him inside, leaving a bloody trail that's quickly covered up by the heavily falling snow

-no one notices that Georgie is gone until they call him for the countdown and when he doesn't come they search the house and find one of the side doors slightly ajar with covered footprints leading into the darkness

So that’s all I got written down so far, I’ve got a ton of ideas for this fic, trying to find a nice blend of both IT and UD at the moment. The prologue takes place at the end of 2008 so the present will be ten years later in 2018, when Bill decides to get everyone back together to stay at the lodge to try and fight away the bad memories and rebuild his fractured friendships, seeing as most of them separated after highschool ended to go to different colleges. 

Main ship is going to be eventual stenbrough, but there’s also going to be reddie (naturally) and benverly with hints of billverly (current relationship but both know it’s ending), and I might delve into Ben/Mike (ship name???) because I had never thought of that ship before and it is amazing, but benverly will be endgame.

Also because this will take place at a ski lodge mountain and not just the Denbroughs owning the whole mountain like the Washingtons in the game, there will also be the Bowers gang either working there or also visiting, if they work there then they’ll be Canadian so the Losers won’t know how awful they are until they go back when they’re 23-24.

There won’t be any windigos, just Pennywise living in the mines, and so far I’m debating on how much death will be involved between canon deaths, letting all the Losers live, just killing the Bowers gang, etc, as well as sexual content for when they return, like when relationships flare up when they’re all reunited at the lodge, considering they’re all adults now, either way there is going to at least be some making out between being scared, and it will also take place over a week or two instead of one night.

Any feedback on what anyone would like to see from this au for the final fic would be greatly appreciated and when I start writing it I’ll post the chapters here and on AO3 ^^
