Some sample images from Belgian comic SUSKE & WISKE, by Willy Vandersteen (1913-1990). I mentioned this comic the other day, but wanted to dive a little deeper.
SUSKE & WISKE, in its heyday from the 1940s to the 1990s, probably was the most popular comic in the Dutch-speaking countries, that is: Holland and Belgium (or Flanders). The albums were recognizable by their red bands (see for example image 7), and the “human tower” on the back cover, which depicted the main characters. The bumbling but heroic Lambik (the second character from below in the tower) probably was the series’ most beloved character, mine though were headstrong Wiske (at the top), and super-powered Jerom, my namesake. I loved the series: the shadowy characters spying in the background, the creepy extraterrestrials hovering above those flat, rainy Belgian landscapes, the ghosts, masked strangers, nightly visitors, hatching their nefarious plans...
The name Wiske is derived from Louise, Suske from François. But Louise and François were fancy names, whereas Suske and Wiske were the dimunitive, “common” versions, as SUSKE & WISKE was a comic mainly aimed at ordinary folk.
(Can you guess what “De Gouden Cirkel” means?)

Let me read you from the comics!
Ephemerist : Let me read you from the comics!
I have wonderful friends who share the most amazing things. This ad from the Ft. Lauderdale Sunday News announces a Sunday radio show where “Uncle Bill Smith” reads the comics over the radio for kids who either don’t have the paper, or who can’t read yet. This brilliantly old-fashioned thing reminded another friend of Fiorello Mayor La Guardia of New York City, who read the funnies over the…

Siegfried (1924), directed by Fritz Lang; Die Nibelungen (1909), illustrated by Carl Otto Czeschka; De Ringelingschat (1951), by Willy Vandersteen; Sebastien in Otasring (2020), Remco van Straten.
The rock-perched city of Otasring, from The Red Man and Others, is an amalgam of Siegfried's city of Worms and Brunhild's Icelandic fortress. It was only natural that I looked at photos from Fritz Lang's film when I did this drawing of the rascal-turned-saint Sebastien.
About The Red Man and Others: Living in exile, Ymke learns the meaning of true strength and the price of hiding. Teenage con-artist Sebastien and small but tough sell-sword Kaila get their own back on a religious cult. As Sebastien is elevated to sainthood, the two young women find each other.
