Rest in peace, Sir Eddie Garcia. In 2005, I was fortunate enough to work with this cinema legend for my film school thesis film called DEXTER CALLIOPE AND THE ADARNA BIRD. He played Lolo Tiburcio, our storyteller, in a scene with Conrad Javier, the young Dexter. We shot on 16mm film, and Sir Eddie was a RIOT onset. He knew we were all young filmmakers all starting out (cinematography by @odysseyflores , production design by @trinkalat , styling by @christina_dy , assisted directed by @issalitton , edited by Maui Mauricio, music by @mikeyamistoso and @itchyjazz , sound design by Mark Laccay and Erwin Romulo, written by @wincyaquinoong , PA @mihkvergara , Art Dept @neurotic.ninja Cris Silva) and he used this onset opportunity to test/tease us about continuity, make us laugh, and keep us on our toes. The creation of his character was so important for him -- he requested for a face towel and a Beer na Beer (quite a rare local beer that our PAs had to scour for) that his character would be drinking in the middle of the day. He also used his own reading glasses and slippers. He was the first huge actor I ever worked with, and I am grateful that he gave me a chance. Does it have to take the accidental onset death of one of our greatest actors in the history of our cinema, a man still working in the industry at the AGE OF 90, to finally practice SAFETY in our film and TV productions? Wincy and I learned a lot in 2017. I feel we've both grown as individuals and as partners. Creating a life together could sometimes be a challenge, but nonetheless a beautiful achievement — sharing our lives beyond duties and expectations, responding with empathy and fairness. 💝 I'm sincerely excited for 2018 — to new travels and discoveries, to creativity, productivity and consistency, and most of all, to a life filled with love and meaning.
