Thinking about Amma Crellin and her actions as reflections of the social hierarchy she grew up in. (spoilers under the cut)
Amma is pretty much Windgap royalty. Not only is her family extremely wealthy, her mother holds power over the livelihoods of big parts of the population. Her family history is deeply tied to that of Windgap. The sheriff and other officials are at Adora's beck and call. Everyone knows Adora and deferes to her, and this status transfers to Amma:
She plays the star part in the school play as a matter of course. She can get away with everything, from shoplifting to breaking curfew, from taking drugs to insulting and taunting a police officer. She's hot shit and very good at being a hot girl to boot, on the way to being prom queen like Camille once was. Her friends do everything she wants. Boys, she feels, are hers to control. Others are her playthings. At home, she's at the mercy of her mother. In the rest of Windgap, she's invicible.
Then, Ann and Natalie. Both outsiders who moved to Windgap only recently, their family without social capital worth speaking of. Both freaks, misfits - tomboys and late bloomers, still running through the woods instead of following the norms of girlhood and femininity. Still lacking self-control, prone to tantrums and biting. In the social hierarchy both of the school and the town, they're near the bottom - it's interesting Amma was friends with them once at all, but then this keen sense for social status often becomes more prominent once puberty hits. I think it's a safe bet they were bullied. They were not cool girls. And so Amma, who never faces consequences for everything, who's royalty, who has friends entirely devoted to her - she's safe killing them, in her good right almost, they're nobodies, and Windgap, that she knows so well, proves her right by not even once suspecting her. Had not an other outsider and freak, Camille, disturbed the status-quo, she would have gotten away with everything swimmingly. Her friends laugh about it too - Ann and Natalie's lives don't seem to have had much worth to them.
[I do believe her choice of killing Natalie wasn't entirely out of convenience either - I have the suspicion that Amma had a childhood crush on Natalie's older brother John that got rejected, and that killing his beloved little sister was a form of punishment for this unheard of outrage. Amma telling Camille John fancies her (despite him treating her like a venomous snake in the pool scene) could be a sort of wish fullfilment. Would explain how viciously she latches onto the 'baby killer' narrative.]
And then, Mae. To me it's VERY MUCH not a random choice to have Mae be a black kid. The only people of color Amma has probably ever met in the conferedate nostalgia enclave of Windgape are domestic workers that obeyed her, or workers at her mother's pig farm who defered to her, all of them incredibly lower on the social hierarchy than the litte Windgap princess. And now she meets this black city kid, who lives in a rented apartment, maybe with a single mom. That's not someone Amma would respect, or consider on her level, but instead I think she'd have this deep belief that Mae was her inferior and should obey her, defer to her. Did she plan on killing her when Camille granted Mae attention? Or did Mae refuse her somehow, got sick of being bossed around, in this fight they supposedly had?
And I love how all of this is both implicit and subtle yet crystal clear, in everything we learn about Ann and Natalie, the way their peers describe them (in contrast to the adults who are more proficient liars), in every interaction we see between the white upper class of Windgap and POCs.

another thing re: Sharp Objects HBO. I feel like people gravely overestimate how manipulative amma actually is. the series is largely filtered through camille's perspective, so you're primed to see amma as far more menacing than you normally would a kind of creepy 13-16(people seem to go back and forth on how old she actually is lol) year old. amma is actually a very sloppy killer. she only gets away with her violence because her violence is an extension of windgap's violence. her victims are tomboyish 10 year old social outcasts. she doesn't actually have any sway over adults; she isn't even able to get mr. lacey to accept her "liberated" iteration of the millie calhoun play (which is a whole thing on its own! mr. lacey exonerating himself of his participation in camille's rape trauma by indulging in a scenario where rape makes its victims stronger!). she only gets away with picking on john because the whole town is picking on john (bill nash going "the killer is probably a fag because he didn't rape natalie before killing her"...practically the thesis of john's ostracization here). when camille frees her to go get help in the finale, she literally stays in her home because she would rather die than abandon her mother. she's the same as 13 year old camille pushing a bug around in the dirt with a stick.
I was genuinely surprised that amma being the killer is treated as a reveal when it just seems obvious from the beginning? the signs were all there. if anything, adora being the killer would have been the actual twist (and honestly more narratively satisfying TBH).

your biracial camille is making my neurons activate in the best of ways. if i were sober i'd rave about its recontextualization of so many things in her life and how often black women's pain is forced to be 'hidden' but still 'accessible' wrt her cutting and how her being 'sought after' as a girl can be seen as oversexualization of young black girls and how she's forced to 'grow up' so quickly but for now u get a thumbs up 👍 from me
Thanks, I didn’t think anybody would care but yea I been mostly inspired by old pre-adaptation text from tumblr. I love Adams as Camille but her being biracial, is a discussion I would love to see take place even if the fandom is mostly dead?
For me, like you said about the ideal of Camille of having to grow up fast due to the adultification and sexualization of young black girls and her coming back to her racist af town like WindGap, just really jogs my nogging. I’ll make one more moodboard with biracial!Camille and Sabrina!Amma. (they come in a package for me) if you ever wanna dm me and talk about this, don’t be shy. I love talking about Sharp Objects; especially since I’m doing a rewatch with friends.

girl turned ghost discovers thirst for the first time ; she laps at her own saliva, coughs out air through a dehydrated throat, pleads for a glass of water that does not come for hours. mama must be busy, she always is until she feels that her girls are begging for her presence. it makes the reunion so much sweeter. when the drink does come, and when it does glide down her throat in heavy gulps, amma finds herself almost immediately spitting & dry heaving over the single bed of her childhood.
@reporteir : " lie down until you've got your breath back. "
out, she thinks. i need to go out. sound of skates against the warm pavement of windgap. giggles & pigtails. tails on pigs and cackling girls. rope around the neck, teeth pulled out. skates on the asphalt of a ghost town ; ghost turned girl. she needs out. "i don't wanna", she murmurs groggily, weakly pushing camille's hand away. camille's big sister potential got beheaded before it got the chance to grow into something beautiful -- amma doesn't want to play with the remains. "i wanna… i wanna feel the air." but down on the plush mattress, she lays. eyes look for stars on the ceiling, & find none. "fresh air. it's so moist." ugly word for an ugly season full of crickets & decomposing corpses. "ain't you fixin' to get out too?"

yes, juno, yes of course you are serious. the girl nods her assent with a small intuitive smile and big brown pleading eyes. of course you are, everyone is always oh so serious -- now to think about it... there must be a moment in every young adult's life where someone comes to them, a stranger with strangely kind eyes. that person will ask, gingerly, as to not scare them away, let's play a game! will you cut the throat of that doe over there? and the person will say no, they will recoil from the horror & violence of it all, they will scream bloody murder before any murder has even taken place. and the person will nod, and go away, easy as that. the doe that had come with them will only spare one look at their savior before scurrying to the side, its survival now a sure thing. there, gone, your ability to experience pure unadulterated fun, gone! for the doe is naught but a metaphor, and if its throat is cut it will only bleed a few jokes & sing a few off-key songs. but that, you must have known, for everyone does ; adults simply do not like the possibility of allegories, preferring the stern dullness of literality.
to play the game, one must be willing to drown in imagination. for instance, let's pretend amma is the murderer. let's pretend she is the one plucking girls like peonies, their last hurried sigh a melody she hears when mamma feeds her new medicine for the first time. anger a well-known nightgown, coming undone at the seams. let's pretend she clothed them & took out their teeth, one by one, hoping to finish the bathroom floor of her dollhouse before the end of the summer. "this guy doesn't care" -- of course he doesn't care, because in this game he is amma, and amma has everything to do with these girls. if amma presses a few terrible orders into their throats & watches as her friends try to wring them out with their bare hands... it is normal. girls love loudly. the public aahs and oohs but does not intervene. in windgap, girls will be girls.
"mamma doesn't appreciate much." she simply says, a sugar-coated truth. in reality, mamma doesn't like amma being out of the house. she doesn't like amma talking to people. she doesn't like amma existing beyond the lines she drew for her in the sand. that amma wishes she could build castles & go swimming matters very little to her. "she knows i'm out with my friends", comes the justification, only there are no friends around to be seen : amma is alone, circling around the agent, the soft scrapping noise of her rollerblades against the fuming asphalt. "sure. you can babysit me." amma's smile is a bright young thing, a bit too mocking, yet soft & innocent. she stops in her tracks, watches juno for a long moment. "have you ever seen anything like this? a killer like this?" morbid curiosity hiding itself behind pink-colored cheeks.

Look at that color. I don't have to explain that color to you are you know what that is dirty probably even can imagine what the first sniff is like based on that color. Meaty, nut-butter, hot dogs boiling and beef seasoning salt over sultry Dr. Pepper and cinnamon fruit. So incredibly spicy and savory and thick in the nose. These were so cheap too when I bought them. Dear dog I wish I would have bought more. I'm not sure exactly when the winery went away, I bought these about 2016 for maybe 30 bucks? I know they're popping up all over the deep discounters shelves these days so hey if you run into it I would definitely slam a few in the trunk and giddy up home. But please drink them, I mean at least drink one and visit them frequently because I only see maybe three or four more years on this. Luscious green bitter stemmy fruit in the mouth, sweet and salty and finished with elegance while not detracting from a wild live drum circle of ethereal Bohemian abandon. This is a gorgeous wine, thin and supple and so rich and concentrated at the same time--just that glorious thing pinot can do that you have such a hard time explaining. 2014 #windgap #pinotnoir #sonomacoast 12.5 #pixel #riedelglass (at Sonoma Coast AVA) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2QTdjHnpVy/?igshid=1talvpx1nfmt4

#SharpObjects is a creepy show. The majority of the dialogue is whispered. It's shot in cool tones showing off the environment. The background complements the storyline by showing the tone. We are constantly being shown; long roads, vast meadows, huge houses, and even long scenes focusing on one thing for extended periods of time. This is all intentional to build to the climax. This show took turns that lead down to some dark and twisty paths. I am forever thankful that I don't live in #Windgap with all these fake, condescending, passive aggressive ass holes. The people of this town are just as much to blame for all the murders amongst all the young kids. By the way... when or if you've seen this show, pay attention to the random words that are hiding in shots. They represent a lot of what #AmyAdams' character is trying to say or how she feels in that particular scene. This is a great show however it is not for everyone. Especially considering how slow it can be. You can stream it on #HBO #TV #television #cinamatic #cinematicexperience #LazyFilmCritic #IG #Daily #HBOnow #HBOgo #ipreview via @preview.app (at Arizona State University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtdOelhFW8S/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2gpgatpfe7ta

what makes amma & camille’s relationship so interesting is like, when you consider amma’s actions under the lens that she killed ann & natalie, all of amma’s behavior & how she chooses to act around camille matters so much more
because when you first watch. you don’t know anything about amma. you’re entirely subjected to camille’s perspective of all their scenes together, and you build this idea of amma that’s summed up as pushy, attention seeking, etc. there’s just always something off about her. she gets too close to camille, she’s invasive, she’s rude and she’s mean but that’s just a teenager, right? you watch amma through camille’s eyes, and that’s why it’s so easy for the viewer to relate to camille, how much she wants to accept amma, entitlement and all. amma’s got her in the palm of her hand. camille falls in love with her because it’s so hard not to, this single bright light in the cavern of camille’s trauma and decades old abandonment issues
but when you see the last shot of the show, both camille & your understanding of amma dramatically shifts, because she’s not just a nightmare metaphorically anymore. and that perspective shift is so important. it gives amma’s actions meaning.
she suffers from spoiled brat syndrome but she’s fucking deadly and she knows absolutely no bounds. you rewatch the season & suddenly understand why amma takes up so much space. and camille’s character, and why she allows amma to cross her boundaries so much, makes so much sense. she’s the loudest in the room because she feels like she’s owed it, like she’s on the top of the world, and she breathes down camille’s neck for no other reason than the fact she enjoys it. because she wants to. and camille lets her. camille lets her
it means everything amma does is on purpose, and she’s calculated enough to know what will set camille off, and she chases it until she’s bored or until she decides camille isn’t giving her what she wants.
“you make me happy, i could eat you up”
“i thought you liked it rough”
“you’re like my soulmate”
“mama always said you were the prettiest girl in windgap… no, you are. you’re so pretty…”
“—you take care of them… you can practice on me if you want.”
“you weren’t curious?” “about windgap?” “no, about me…”
“sister, i’ve never had a sister… i just wanna know you.”
(in reference to cut on her arm) “if i connect these two itd make a c, for camille.”
it’s amma barging drunk into camille’s room at midnight and forcing her arms around her, it’s getting all up in camille’s face at the threat of richard on her skaters, begging for camille to do something, be dangerous like mama said, like her. it’s amma prying camille’s jaw open and kissing her forcing the tab in her mouth, it’s amma’s gaze splitting her open when she sees camille’s scars, its amma pinning her down with just a touch on her back, lifting her shirt up and tracing camille’s scars too intimately, it’s amma looking down her nose at her and sexually harassing her, it’s amma getting camille higher than a kite and laughing inches from her mouth, it’s amma killing her only friend in st. louis because she was scared camille liked her more, it’s amma’s jealousy of their dead sister because she had camille first and “you can never be as good as someone dead”, it’s amma wrapping camille around her finger and trailing her along, absolutely fucking spellbound
i could go on about camille’s incessant need to obey and her trauma with her own sexuality and her fixation on teenage girls but like. it’s just so. it’s so. if i don’t stop i’m gonna green out
