Chiharu Shiota’s gorgeous installations are just one part of her engaging exhibition, Signs of Life, at Templon in NYC. The installations lead to other rooms of smaller sculptures as well as  paintings.
From the press release-
After a foundation degree in painting at Seika University in Kyoto, Chiharu Shiota chose to pursue her artistic studies in Berlin, focusing on performance. Her practice soon shifted towards site-specific installations. She skilfully weaves knotted threads to create fantastical scenes combining salvaged window frames, a piano, suitcases, books and used clothes. Bordering on drawing and sculpture, her fabulous ephemeral, immersive installations have become her signature. Since her impressive installation for the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Bienniale in 2015, she has become one of the key figures on the international art scene and is regularly invited to show her work at museums worldwide.
In a hyper-connected world, Chiharu Shiota’s new exhibition questions the notion of the “web”, a living organism similar to the structures that make up the universe or the neurons our brains are built on. Created on-site over two weeks, a large-scale installation made of red threads symbolizes this permanent connection of information, collective memory and the world’s knowledge which cuts across cultures and continents. At the heart of the work are two arms, her own, placed on the ground. They are cast in bronze, palms facing up to the sky. “I always thought that if death took my body, I wouldn’t exist anymore,” explains the artist. “I’m now convinced that my spirit will continue to exist because there is more to me than a body. My consciousness is connected to everything around me and my art unfolds by way of people’s memory.”
The installation is followed by a series of sculptures. Enfolded at the centre of each one, as though frozen in place by the intertwined threads, are objects from daily life. “I feel that the objects we possess are like a third skin,” she says. “We accumulate these things and transpose our presence and our memory to them.” Often obsolete, weighed down by impenetrable histories, these objects — old suitcases, stained dolls, miniature pieces of furniture and tiny bottles — represent the treasures offered up by memory, to be seen but not touched.
This exhibition closes 3/9/23.

Diana Al-Hadid’s new #MTAarts permanent artwork, “The Time Telling,” is now on view at NYC Transit 34 St-Penn Station. Inspired by Alfred Eisenstadt’s iconic photograph of the famed clock that hung at the entrance of the original Pennsylvania Station, Al-Hadid captures its prominence through her expressive gestural mark making. Installed within the new ADA-accessible street level station entrance at 33 St and 7 Av, the glass mosaic stands at an impressive 14’-9” high by 14’-1” wide.
The large-scale work features a scene viewed from above. Light pours through the windows, forming a veil of mist or fog. Below commuters rush across the station floor. The rising architecture draws in the viewer, but it is the clock at the center that looms large. Its power is clear even though the precise moment is obscured. The artwork connects the past and present of this important station and offers a space for today’s riders and those of an earlier era to briefly meet in passing.
“The Time Telling” joins two other #MTAarts mosaics by Al-Hadid installed in 2019 in the control area of the 1,2,3 trains at 34 St-Penn Station, directly below the new artwork. All fabricated by Mayer of Munich, the trio are rendered in a palette of shimmering aquas, metallics, and iridescence. Each one captures Diana’s gestural linework, signature drips, and speckled fogs – marks designed to relate to the concept of time.

State Music — Residency at Columbia University / Computer Music Center
I spent five weeks in NYC between March and April 2023. It was a fantastic opportunity to work at the Computer Music Center in New York. The CMC is the first electronic music studio in the USA and Seth Cluett was kind enough to let me continue my research in the best conditions.
During this stay I was able to compose two new pieces for my forthcoming debut album State Music. The first was recorded in Studio 324 on two very early versions of Buchla and Serge analogue modular systems and two Bode frequency shifters. The process was similar to what I had done at EMS Stockholm, Radio Belgrade, KSYME Athens and Willem Twee Studio in Den Bosch. I tried to adapt to the machines installed in the studio, tested a lot of patches and recorded many hours of textures, accidents and other sonic events using a variety of techniques. The editing, collaging, layering and mixing was done later in my studio. I just followed one rule. Don't use the same recording twice. No loops, nothing like that.
The second composition was recorded in Jace Clayton's office. Why? Because the RCA Mark II, considered one of the first music synthesizers ever, still sits in that room. The synth has been out of order since 1976, when someone broke into the Prentis Hall building and vandalised the machine. But I decided to make use of it anyway. I opened one of the office windows to let sounds from the city into the room and recorded the tiny vibrations caused by street noise with a geophone magnetised to the synthesizer. In this way the synthesiser essentially acted as a loudspeaker. A cheap recorder was placed near the window. Two wide cardioid microphones were placed in the middle of the room for a high quality recording. Most of the time I sit in front of the synthesizer and do nothing but listen, and every now and then I flip a switch, turn a potentiometer or unplug a patch cable to activate the acoustic space of the office and make the metal frame of the machine vibrate.
It was an amazing moment. I've been working on the State Music project since 2018. I realised that being in that room with that silent machine felt like achieving something. My understanding of electronic music history is much deeper. The links between early synthesizers and the military industry are now much clearer to me. State music? Corporate music? I don't know and it doesn't matter.
Here's an anecdote from The Enabling Instrument: Milton Babbitt and the RCA Synthesizer" a paper by Martin Brody.
When the Mark-I appeared in 1955, it was listed in the RCA Acoustics Laboratory inventory with a proud comparison: The synthesiser was 'second only to the Typhoon rocket simulator as the largest single assembly to come out of the David Sarnoff Research Center'. [Although the Mark-I was built to recreate a peaceful expression of human subjectivity rather than to obliterate a hostile and remote man-machine, its input/output components were as indifferent to the workings of the psyche as an anti-aircraft predictor. As Harry Olson recalled, to test their new machine, Olson and Belar followed Seashore's playbook of analysing past performances. The goal was not to expose the musical mind, but to simulate the sounds of acoustic instruments and human performers with the utmost precision.
I would like to thank Seth Cluett, Anna Meadors, Jace Clayton and Nick Patterson for their help.

The first of the preceding images is a collage of the Franco Manca floor-plan and a Paul-Henri Chombart de Lauwe style plotting of my movements within the span of a week. The plotting displays a whirring triangular circuit between front desk, bar, and kitchen porter. I have taken aesthetic properties from Wyndham Lewis’ BLAST: War Number in order to convey the narrow and mechanical quality of my traversing. With no deviations, only iterations, my activity stands in stark contrast to the whimsical premise of the Dérive. The hand of the Vorticist opposes sentimentality. The serrated edges of the woodcut are designed with sheer violence. Lewis desires to convey an exact quiddity of the modern world. The Vorticist does not pursue simulacra, only aggressive substantiality.
To some degree, the restaurant emulates battle. The serving hatch defines two separate spheres: Front of house and Back of house. The two parties are kept in a state of near conflict. When carrying the collage to photograph at an upstairs window, the pieces reconfigured to form alternative compositions. The two latter images depict the collage’s resultant organisations. Without manipulating the shapes myself, the collage reverted to a vortex.

PROVOCATION PIZZA : BIN BAG BANALITY
FORMULARY IN THE SPIRIT OF IVAN CHTCHEGLOV
Tumblr media
Mierle Laderman Ukeles: Sanitation Celebrations: Grand Finale of the First NYC Art Parade, Part I: The Social Mirror, 1983, garbage collection truck.
I tie the bags, carry them out into the rain, and drop them at the curb. ‘Presented with the alternative of love or a garbage disposal unit, young people of all countries have chosen the garbage disposal unit.’ Whilst maintenance is a fundamental fixture of Capitalism, it is a facet carefully concealed. This heaped street-side installation only appears at night - only at closed-doors.
One Autumn night when the collection truck didn’t show and foxes chewed through the bin bags, the morning’s passersby were enraged. They stopped at the curb, looked down into the spilled contents of chewed crusts and beer bottles, and went online to write their martyred diatribes. Faced with the messy by-product of consumerism, the people responded with pointed fingers. They recognised their reflection in Franco Manca’s glass front but not in the littered gutter.
If a new pizzeria were to be formulated, one might forefront and hijack the establishment’s hidden maintenance and service work. In Chtcheglov’s sardonic tone, I might announce the appointment of a new management team. Staff would no longer serve under the elusive figure of Franco but instead the transparent moniker Frankie - Manky Frankie. Inside the restaurant, entropy would reign supreme. Fungi would grow in thick shelves from the walls but also the tables, stairs, and utensils. Bouts of watercress, spinach, and peas would grow in deep-set, water-logged motes running along each wall.
The menu would solely list produce cultivated and foraged within the restaurant. Neighbourhood rodents must be caught and carved if a customer has a preference for meat. A single septic tank and a simple hydroponic system would keep all nature in balance. The menu would move with the seasons. In winter, the interior’s crop might entirely perish. This would reintroduce the acumen of the hunter-gatherer, a ‘forgotten desire’. Everybody pitches in, society thrives. Customers would no longer sit down to their private dinnertime spectacles but would engage in a situation of invigorating, albeit nauseous, uncertainty.
Artist Zeger Reyers engages in a near identical form of Situationism. With a desire to humanise the domestic sphere, Rayers planted mycelium within everyday objects. The mushrooms were then prepared and served during the exhibition finissage. Through consuming from the furniture, the objects were reestablished as secondary - as tools and accessories. The furniture became wood, glue, and damp again - No longer confined to the trappings of a feminine realm.

Alpha’a X Moletni&C: A Love Letter to Design in NYC
Tumblr media
Alpha’a recently wrapped up an inspiring project curating a collection for Molteni&C’s new New York flagship store.
Molteni&C has been at the forefront of the Italian design industry for decades. All of the modern design firm’s furniture is made in Italy but it has an international presence with hundreds of retail spaces in over 80 countries.
Our in-house curator Iman Mazhar worked closely with the leading Italian furniture and design firm to highlight local NYC and East Coast artists alongside world renowned artists. The result is a vibrant collection that complements the space and creates an inspiring dialogue about design.
Tumblr media
As a nod to Moldenti&C’s forward thinking approach to design, we sourced works that experiment with form: textured and layered paintings, minimal pieces, works with geometric patterns, as well as some sculptural and 3D works. We selected warm vibrant colors and hues of blue to add vibrancy to the showroom’s interior and included monochrome works to add moments of calmness.
Mazhar worked with Alpha’a artists, independent artists and gallery represented artists to create a dynamic roster of artists for the final selection. Alpha’a artists David Stephen Johnson and Senem Oezdogan were highlighted as well as works from artists from Praxis Gallery, Opera Gallery, Nohra Haime Gallery, and Hemingway African Gallery.
Molteni&C’s New York store is located on Madison Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. The building was designed by Vincent Van Duysen and combines Italian style and elegance with classic New York design. The spacious two story storefront is over 12,500 square feet with four large shop windows that offer passersby a peek into Molteni&’s stunning display.
Shoppable designs by the Group’s three brands: Molteni&C, Dada and UniFor fill the New York space alongside prints installed by Alpha’a. Moletni&C’s open layout imagines a range of settings for the brands’ furniture to shine, from an intimate home setting to a contemporary office environment. All artworks displayed at the store are available for purchase on site.
Meet the artists in the Molteni&C X Alpha’a collection and purchase their works on alphaa.io:

Tumblr media
Senem Oezdogan, Alpha’a

Tumblr media
Claudia Vieira, PRAXIS
Claudia Vieria lives and works in Porto Alegre, Brazil and New York City. She recreates spaces by drawing and painting on the walls. She often creates site-specific installations and immersive drawn environments in which the action of drawing the line is as important as the final appearance of the work.
Tumblr media
Julie Hedrick, NOHRA HAIME GALLERY
Julie Hedrick is a Canadian-American artist known for her abstract and vibrant oil paintings. Hedrick’s art displays a characteristic peeling texture, tactile complex surfaces and an elemental human quality.

Hemingway African Gallery
Alpha’a selected sculptures from Hemingway African Gallery. The NYC gallery’s collection is ethically-sourced, often directly from artisans across the continent, and ranges from antique to decorative.

Alfred Haberpointner, OPERA GALLERY
Alfred Haberpointner is an Austrian sculptor who uses wood as his primary medium. He is best known for his wooden plates that he cuts, burns, saws and then bleaches and re-pigments creating a texture, rhythm, intensity and movement.

Stay Cool and Protected with Window Tints NYC
Introduction
In the bustling city of New York, where the concrete jungle meets the scorching sun, finding ways to stay cool and protected becomes a top priority. One effective solution is to invest in window tints for your home, office, or vehicle. Window tints not only provide relief from the intense heat but also offer a range of benefits such as UV protection, privacy, and energy efficiency. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the world of window tints in NYC, their advantages, the different types available, and how to choose the right window tinting service for your needs.
Tumblr media
The Benefits of Window Tints
Window tints offer a plethora of advantages that go beyond just keeping you cool. Let's delve into some of the key benefits of installing window tints in your space:
1. Heat Reduction
The scorching summers in NYC can make your living or working space unbearable. Window tints act as a barrier, blocking a significant amount of heat from entering your space. This helps to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors, reducing the reliance on air conditioning and ultimately lowering your energy bills.
2. UV Protection
The sun's harmful UV rays can cause damage to your skin and fade your furniture, flooring, and artwork. Window tints are designed to block up to 99% of UV rays, providing you with essential protection. By installing window tints, you can safeguard your health and preserve the longevity of your belongings.
3. Glare Reduction
The bright lights and reflections of the city can create annoying glare on your screens or disrupt your relaxation time. Window tints significantly reduce glare, allowing you to work, watch TV, or simply enjoy the view without any distractions. This is particularly beneficial for office spaces, where productivity can be hampered by excessive glare.
4. Enhanced Privacy
Living in a crowded city means privacy can sometimes be compromised. Window tints offer an added layer of privacy by making it difficult for outsiders to see inside your space. You can enjoy the view from within while maintaining your privacy from prying eyes.
5. Energy Efficiency
Window tints contribute to energy efficiency by reducing the amount of heat entering your space. This means your air conditioning system doesn't have to work as hard to cool the area, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced carbon footprint. By investing in window tints, you are not only saving money but also contributing to a greener environment.
Types of Window Tints
Now that we understand the benefits of window tints, let's explore the different types available in NYC:
1. Dyed Window Tints
Dyed window tints are a popular and cost-effective option. They consist of a layer of dye that absorbs solar heat and reduces glare. While they provide excellent heat reduction and privacy, dyed window tints may fade over time and require replacement.
2. Metalized Window Tints
Metalized window tints are made by depositing tiny metallic particles onto the film. These particles reflect heat and block UV rays, offering superior heat reduction and glare control. Metalized tints are durable and long-lasting, but they can interfere with electronic signals, such as GPS or cell phone reception.
3. Ceramic Window Tints
Ceramic window tints are the top-of-the-line option when it comes to performance and aesthetics. They are constructed using advanced ceramic nanoparticles that provide excellent heat rejection, UV protection, and glare reduction. Ceramic tints are also non-metallic, which means they do not interfere with electronic signals.
4. Hybrid Window Tints
Hybrid window tints combine the benefits of dyed and metalized tints. They offer good heat reduction, glare control, and UV protection, while also maintaining a natural appearance. Hybrid tints are a versatile option that strikes a balance between performance and cost.
Choosing a Window Tinting Service
When it comes to installing window tints, it's crucial to choose a reputable and professional service provider. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a window tinting service in NYC:
1. Experience and Expertise
Look for a service provider with a proven track record and extensive experience in the industry. An experienced window tinting company will have the knowledge and skills to handle various types of window films and ensure a flawless installation.
2. Quality of Materials
Ensure that the window tinting service uses high-quality films from reputable manufacturers. The quality of the materials used will determine the longevity and performance of your window tints. Ask the service provider about the brands they work with and inquire about any warranties offered.
3. Customer Reviews and Testimonials
Read customer reviews and testimonials to gauge the reputation and reliability of the window tinting service. Positive feedback from satisfied customers is a good indicator of the quality of their work and customer service.
FAQ
Q1: Are window tints legal in NYC?
A1: Yes, window tints are legal in NYC, but there are regulations regarding the darkness and reflectiveness allowed. It's important to ensure that the window tints you choose comply with the local laws.
Q2: Can window tints be applied to old windows?
A2: Yes, window tints can be applied to both old and new windows. However, it's essential to ensure that the windows are in good condition and free from any cracks or damage before installation.
Q3: Do window tints require maintenance?
A3: Window tints are generally low-maintenance. Regular cleaning with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth is usually sufficient to keep them in good condition. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the tint.
Q4: Can window tints be removed?
A4: Yes, window tints can be removed if desired. However, it's recommended to hire a professional window tinting service to ensure a proper removal process without damaging the windows.
Q5: How long do window tints last?
A5: The lifespan of window tints depends on various factors such as the type of tint, quality of installation, and exposure to sunlight. On average, window tints can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years or even longer with proper care and maintenance.
Conclusion
In the bustling city of New York, where the sun's rays can be relentless, window tints provide a practical and effective solution to stay cool and protected. With their ability to reduce heat, block UV rays, minimize glare, enhance privacy, and improve energy efficiency, window tints offer a range of benefits for both residential and commercial spaces.
When considering window tints, it's important to choose the right type that suits your needs and preferences. Whether you opt for dyed, metalized, ceramic, or hybrid window tints, each type offers its own set of advantages. Additionally, selecting a reputable and experienced window tinting service is crucial to ensure a professional installation and long-lasting results.
By investing in window tints for your home, office, or vehicle in NYC, you can create a more comfortable and protected environment while enjoying the benefits of energy efficiency and privacy. So, stay cool, stay protected, and embrace the advantages of window tints in the vibrant city of New York.

Solar Glass Inc.: Repair and Replacement of Glass Storefront Doors NYC's Baldwin
It is imperative for private business owners to ensure that their building exudes sophistication and professionalism. In the unlikely event that your storefront is outdated, you are unable to accomplish that. In the unlikely event that your office building hasn't been renovated in ten years or more, consider the following arguments for investing in a new glass storefront. Provide Product Displays with Security
Use all of the space that is available to you if the sale of products is the foundation of your firm. You could be losing out on valuable exhibit space if your storefront windows are outdated. Similarly, glass weakens and becomes less durable with age, creating the perfect environment for burglaries. You can maintain the protection of your product even in the front window by designing a different storefront with safety glass.
Tumblr media
Enhance Business Attraction
In the unlikely event that your glass storefront is outdated, some of the curb appeal that makes your business building appealing has been gone. The new glass will increase appeal, encouraging onlookers to notice your commercial property. That being said, adding another glass storefront will enhance the façade and provide you with the necessary area to enhance your advertising opportunities by utilizing cutting-edge signage and graphics.
Boost Efficiency in Energy Use
If the glass on your storefront is outdated, your building isn't using energy as efficiently as it could. The old glass may be too thin to even consider a barrier against energy absorption — and bad luck — that can result in increased energy costs for heating and cooling. Since windows are responsible for a larger portion of corporate energy loss, installing a new storefront made of tempered and tinted glass will increase the energy efficiency of your company.
Expand Natural Light's Accessibility
You can improve the lighting in your business building with a new glass storefront if it's not as good as you would like. Replacing your windows will let in more natural light without raising your energy costs or requiring you to buy more lighting fixtures.
Reduce Maintenance Time and Costs
You will have to expend more energy on maintenance if your glass is outdated and ancient. This is a result of older glass being more diligently maintained clean. Unfortunately, dirty glass might lead to disaster for your little company. Investing in a new glass storefront will lower your maintenance costs and increase window cleanliness. Engage a cleaning agency for routine maintenance to preserve the elegance of your recently opened business.
Boost the Value of Your Commercial Structure
You should make every effort to improve the appeal of your business property, whether you intend to sell it or are just looking for new tenants. Your property valuation will rise as a result of the noticeable enhancement of your new glass storefront, which will also attract more potential buyers and tenants.
Put a new face on your storefront if you're not happy with the way your Baldwin business building or storefront is now set up and the curb appeal isn't particularly appealing. Please get in contact with Solar Glass Inc. We can discuss the finest options for your needs and add a second glass storefront to your commercial property.

It's the last week to see the Gerhard Richter exhibition at David Zwirner in NYC. The show includes a group of Richter's last paintings from 2016-17, two of which are pictured above, as well as a new glass sculpture and recent works on paper.
From the press release-
Celebrated worldwide as one of the most important artists of his generation, with a career spanning from the 1960s to the present, Richter has pursued a diverse and influential practice characterized by a decades-long commitment to painting and its formal and conceptual possibilities. The artist has consistently probed the relationship between painting and photography, engaging a variety of styles and innovative techniques in a complex repositioning of genres. In Richter’s work, dual modes of representation and abstraction fundamentally question the way in which we relate to images.
The exhibition will bring together a significant group of Richter’s last oil paintings, made in 2016–2017, a number of which will be shown in New York for the first time. Richter stopped making oil paintings in 2017, and the final work on canvas he made will be on view in the exhibition. Part of the artist’s Abstrakte Bilder (Abstract Paintings) series—a cornerstone of his practice since the 1970s—the works on view exemplify Richter’s investigations into chance occurrences and the painted medium’s historical and material properties. With their highly worked and intricately stratified surfaces, the last paintings foreground the sheer physical presence of paint and color, enacting a mode of composition that is aleatory yet deliberately planned.
Centrally featured will be 3 Scheiben (3 Panes) (2023), a new glass sculpture that continues Richter’s exploration of human perception and the built environment. Comprising three sequential rectangular panes of transparent yet reflective glass—each one positioned upright and measuring almost ten feet in height—the installation invites viewers to look at, through, and beyond its surface, revealing the inherently subjective and situational nature of perceived reality. Richter has consistently created glass and mirrored works since 1967, often presenting them alongside his paintings and drawings and placing them in the larger context of their surrounding architecture. Crucially, while sculptural, these free-standing glass works are also positioned as a literal reflection on painting and image-making; they respond to the art-historical notion of the painting as both a mirror and a window, while also acting as a powerful corollary to the blurred effect of Richter’s photo paintings, which the artist began experimenting with in the 1960s. As critic Hal Foster notes, “The felt analogy between a composed painting and a contemplative viewer is so fundamental that we are not aware of it until it is interfered with. And this is precisely what the glass pieces do: our reflection, in the sense of our mirrored image, disrupts our reflection, in the sense of our contemplation.”1
An expansive suite of new works on paper from 2021–2022—some made with ink and others with graphite and colored pencil—will also be on view. Richter’s drawings constitute a significant element of his practice, allowing him to explore another aspect of the role of the artist’s hand in the creation of a dynamic and abstract pictorial narrative. Many of these works feature passages of cloudy graphite rubbings juxtaposed with equally hazy semi-erased portions. The artist embeds a sparse network of crisscrossing arcs and lines amongst this backdrop, forming an enigmatic topography that seems to map out the very possibilities of image-making itself. Other drawings on view are composed of abstract monochrome washes of ink and graphite, taking on a decisively painterly appearance; as Richter describes, these works on paper chart out a parallel but complementary path to his painted oeuvre, much like that of “a poem and a novel by the same author.”2
Also on view will be mood, a group of inkjet prints that relate to a recent series of colored ink drawings by Richter, both of which debuted at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel in 2022. Part of the artist’s extensive career-long experiments with the iterative translation and interplay of mediums, these vibrant prints are almost indistinguishable from their ink counterparts, revealing Richter’s continued fascination with the possibilities of image reproduction.
This exhibition closes 4/29/23.
