Our trainings continue with Wine Works! Founded in 2011 by Vahe Keushguerian, WineWorks was originally a wine consulting firm which now operates as a winery incubator, offering winemaking and viticulture services as well as strategic winery and marketing management support. Besides offering their services, WineWorks has an impressive wine portfolio of their own! We are grateful to Khachatur Julhakyan for the wonderful presentation, where we learned a lot about their Zulal, Oshin, Keush and unique late harvest Hekiat! The 2012 El Campo from Dos Cabezas WineWorks is an aged field blend sourced from Proghorn Vineyard in the Sonoita AVA. Dos Cabezas WineWorks is one of the few wineries in the state that sources grapes from both the Willcox AVA and the Sonoita AVA.

Growing up, Thanksgiving was always an intimate affair. Intimate because it was only my mom, dad, and me.

The rest of our family, you see, lived in Holland.

So it was just the three of us, a Thanksgiving turkey, mashed potatoes, asparagus in butter and diced eggs, and Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits, the ones you peel apart in layers.

There used to be more to our Thanksgiving feast but I think along the way my parents figured out these were our essentials... and anything else just made for more things to cook during the day.

In school, I don't remember anything we did for Thanksgiving whether it was grade school or jr. high or high school... but I do remember that when I started working at the Royal Fork Buffet, Thanksgiving Day became a whopper of an experience 'cause it was our busiest day of the year. 

Ever.

Which was kind of sad because it was the farthest thing from my childhood Thanksgivings. It was loud and crowded with cranky children and sometimes cranky adults. 

And the turkey?

It was boneless, pressed turkey. Flat-ish on the bottom and oval-ish everywhere else. Wrapped in foil.

And on Thanksgiving Day we cooked a ton of these things along with our usual roast beef, both served at the end of the buffet line by the meat carver whose job I held for a while before moving up to cook.

When I was married, we did the triple holiday thing where we're with one spouse's family, then the other spouse's family, and then by ourselves at the tail end of the day. Which was definitely ticking off all the boxes of what you do on Thanksgiving...

But was also a far, far cry from my childhood Thanksgivings.

It was busy as hell.

And then, by 'n by, it was just us.

Last night, Linzy joined us after work and it was the three of us again for a family Thanksgiving featuring Kimmer's rosemary chicken, mashed potatoes (mashed my me), asparagus, harvest rice that's just the tastiest thing you ever tasted, yams, and Challah rolls that came out like burnt golf balls because I accidently turned the bread machine off while it was kneading the dough.

My bad.

And totally my fault.

Yet it was all a stone's throw from the menu my parents used to make. And it was intimate like I remember... updated with its own YouTube soundtrack: Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli: I Got Rhythm. 

And Linzy showed up with a bottle of Riesling from A to Z Wineworks in Oregon, a Grace Harbor pumpkin spice eggnog, and three cans of White Claw hard seltzer alternately flavored in raspberry, lime, and ruby grapefruit.

Plus this:

Eventually, we actually did consider amongst ourselves what we had to be thankful for this year. We did it in that way we used to at our friend's Sabbath dinners when sometimes you had to pick your way through a whole lot of messy to find the good. Sometimes you had to endure grisly details in order to find the lesson. And sometimes you had to see the year with altitude to realize there are heroes in there... and inflection points that really do lead to good things.

Sometimes it's thankfulness like you won the lotto.

And sometimes it's thankfulness like you're still alive after an earthquake.

And everything in-between.

Our friend Ryan joined us after dinner... which didn't stop Kimmer from offering him dinner which he gladly accepted. The point of the evening, though, was games. Which we indulged until 11 with a lot of fun, laughter, and conversation.

Add that to the list of what I'm thankful for this year.

Little moments like that.

In the end, we did a little of my childhood Thanksgiving with more laughter and friendship. It’s an experience that served in many ways as both refuge and respite from the rest of the year.

And you know what?

That ain't half bad.
