Welcome to the Unicorn Diner 🦄🥤
An exercise for my Illustrative Concepts 2 class! My class created a list of prompt words and we all swapped with each other and illustrated a list we got, I got Unicorn, Interior of a 50s Diner/Restaurant, Soda Pop, Drinking, and Cheerful so I decided to illustrate a diner for unicorns that's built in an empty pop can! I imagine these to be tiny unicorns hehe ✨

The cherry tree I planted in front of the greenhouse blossomed for the first time this spring! A round of applause!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The wind always blows from the valley so I planted this tree strategically so that in spring a delicious smell would be delivered in my living-room through the windows, and around the outdoor table where I work, and it worked :) I estimate that it improved my quality of life by 11%. A light spring breeze carrying a cherry blossom smell is the kind of thing that stops me in my tracks ten times a day and makes me close my eyes and take a deep breath and think oh, life is good.
More tree updates: I talked in this post from 2021, then this one from 2022, about how I hoped to plant a 'fruit tree path' in the woods behind my house—this project is still ongoing and, well, hasn't borne fruit yet, but has finally blossomed. My Fruit Alley now boasts 10 trees, and looks like—what it is, a small opening in the woods that I have to deploy heroic and sustained efforts to keep open, because the woods try to reclaim it year after year, patiently, like a slow green tide.
Tumblr media
The white thing in the middle is one of the tarps I've been using to smother brambles, I move them every few weeks and it works pretty well. I also use cardboard, but in the spring it's hard to keep up with the sheer rate of growth everywhere. Of course the main enemy is the army of broom that you can see in the distance, all yellow and cheerful-looking at the moment. I mostly fight them in the winter, every year I manage to push them back a few metres...
Here's a photo where you can better see some of the trees :
Tumblr media
In total I have planted 2 apple trees, 1 quince tree, 1 mirabelle plum, 3 red plums, 1 nectarine tree, 3 cherry trees. I'm really glad that all of them survived, as I was a bit worried about damage from deer or boars. I did lose 2 chestnut trees that were destroyed so savagely I have to assume it's wild boars, but I had planted them much farther away in the woods and I won't make this mistake again. I now have two new baby chestnuts and I planted them near the greenhouse (downhill):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I'd never seen nectarine flowers before, they look exotic! I also discovered this year what quince flowers look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only tree that didn't bloom was the smallest apple tree, and honestly that's her fault because for some reason she decided to make tender new green leaves in the middle of winter, so she pretty much exhausted herself for nothing. And you can't blame climate change and seasons being weird for this, because it was a cold and snowy week and no other nearby fruit trees were making any leaves. The confused apple tree is a New Zealand cultivar, so I suppose you could argue she thinks she's still in New Zealand, except she's never been to New Zealand in her life, she was born and raised in France, she doesn't know New Zealand exists. The only possible explanation is, I suppose, a deep-rooted yearning for their ancestral homeland among New Zealand apple trees.
I was a bit concerned when this tree then failed to produce any leaves in the spring, I worried she might be hopelessly hemispherically-challenged, but then I went back to check two weeks later and she was finally green! In a seasonally-appropriate way!
Tumblr media
Other trees I've planted, not in the fruit tree path: a persimmon, but it died very quickly :( I will try again; a goji berry shrub, which has been here for two years and seems to be doing well, but so far no sign of berries; and in front of my house, an amelanchier (un arbre dont ma mère n'arrive jamais à se rappeler le nom et qu'elle persiste à appeler "le mélenchon"):
Tumblr media
Finally, my last piece of important tree-related news is that I had the hazel tree near my house removed this winter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I asked the guy who was working on the road nearby with an excavator digging a drainage trench if he could do it, and it took all of 10 minutes, like picking a flower, it was impressive!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the reason I wanted to remove it is that there are hundreds of hazel trees in my woods and I wanted something different in this spot by the house. Unfortunately for this deserving hazel, it just wasn't special enough.
So I planted a tiny ginkgo :) And now I just have to be extremely patient as I wait for everyone to grow.

Walnut the Crane dead at 42
Tumblr media
White-naped Crane Walnut and her keeper/husband, Chris Crowe, in 2021. (Photo: Roshan Patel via NZCBI)
Internet sensation Walnut the Crane became ill on January 2, 2024 and passed away at age 42 at her home at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) campus in Front Royal, VA. A necropsy revealed the cause of death to be renal failure. Walnut far outlived the average life expectancy for White-naped Cranes in captivity, which is 15 years. She leaves behind her husband, zookeeper Chris Crowe, with whom she had 8 offspring, including two housed at the NZCBI: daughter Brenda, age 18, and a granddaughter, age 1.
“Walnut was a unique individual with a vivacious personality,” Crowe said. “She was always confident in expressing herself, an eager and excellent dancer, and stoic in the face of life’s challenges. I’ll always be grateful for her bond with me. Walnut’s extraordinary story has helped bring attention to her vulnerable species’ plight.” (x)
White-naped Cranes are native to Mongolia, northeast China and southeast Russia, wintering in the Korean DMZ, Japan, and China. Habitat loss to agriculture, development, and ongoing droughts are factors in their decline, leaving them classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Walnut was an important contributor to efforts to restore the species.
Edit: for those unaware, I refer to the zookeeper as her husband because Walnut was imprinted on humans, meaning she considered him her mate and performed displays and courtship for him. As a zookeeper he was responsible for artificially inseminating the bird. This and more was the source of her viral fame.

I'm going to invite these scientists to our house and yard. We have dozens and dozens of grackles at our feeders, making their grackle noises and bullying away our other "resident" birds. But in case they're right, here's an excerpt from an Audubon story:
As people have remade the American landscape, they’ve also shaped the fortunes of Common Grackles. The iridescent blackbirds flourished in the grain fields and pastures that European settlers cultivated after cutting down forests in the 18th and 19th centuries. By the 1970s, an estimated 150 million grackles inhabited a vast stretch from the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains, and today they are regulars across much of the continent. But the birds are disappearing—and no one knows why. A new tracking project aims to reveal what’s driving the mysterious decline.
Birders were among the first to gather evidence of the species’ troubling trajectory. In winter, grackles join Red-winged Blackbirds, European Starlings, and other birds in giant swirling congregations. Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) long tallied roosts of up to tens of millions of birds. But in the past couple of decades, participants have rarely found flocks of more than a few million, says former CBC director Geoff LeBaron. Other blackbirds are in decline, too, but grackles have become noticeably absent from winter roosts.
According to CBC data, Common Grackles have been dropping at a rate of 3 percent per year, which amounts to a roughly 78 percent decline since 1970, says Tim Meehan, a quantitative scientist at Audubon. Meanwhile, federal Breeding Bird Surveys, which take place each summer, have found at least a 50 percent decline over the past half century. These data clearly indicate that there are fewer grackles across the board, Meehan says: “It’s a slam dunk.”
Michael Ward, a University of Illinois biologist, is one of the lead scientists delving into the conundrum. In 2021 he and his colleagues ruled out a hunch that grackles were failing to produce young: 60 percent of chicks in nearly 200 nests that he monitored fledged successfully, a higher rate than most songbirds achieve. Whatever is harming grackles is likely affecting adults, Ward says.
It’s possible the resourceful foragers, which eat everything from grubs to grains to garbage, are exposed to something dangerous in their diet. The researchers suspect insects and corn could be hazardous meals: Both may contain high levels of neonicotinoids—insecticides commonly applied to grains that have been linked to a decline in avian biodiversity in North America and beyond. Ward’s group plans to study what grackles eat on their breeding grounds to help determine how great a risk their food poses.
Meanwhile, the scientists want to better understand the challenges grackles face after leaving their breeding grounds. In addition to stringing up mist nets to snag birds in residential neighborhoods and at roost sites, Ward and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Kelly VanBeek set live traps baited with seed and mealworms at Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance’s Goose Pond Sanctuary. They outfitted 14 Common Grackles with satellite tags throughout the summer and early fall of 2023 as the birds prepared to depart for their wintering grounds in the Southeast and southern Midwest.
On those journeys, VanBeek says, there are plenty of opportunities for the migrants to encounter other possible chemical culprits like fungicides, which may disrupt birds’ hormones and metabolism and are typically applied in the fall when grackles are on the move. Blackbirds’ penchant for foraging on farmland in large flocks makes them a target for culling as well. Between 1974 and 1992, the federal government killed up to 18 million Common Grackles in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama to reduce damage to agricultural crops. The pace has slowed, but the practice continues: Wildlife Services, a USDA division, killed more than 630,000 Common Grackles over the past decade. That’s on top of birds taken by farmers under FWS permits.

#Race4Women Interview with F1 [2025-04-17] featuring: Sebastian Vettel, Laura Winter, Dania Akeel, Oliver Oakes, & Lina Hammadeh ↴
On a scorching Wednesday afternoon, the sun’s rays are beaming down over a karting track north of Jeddah. Friends, family and motorsport enthusiasts have gathered to watch 20 young women race around the twisty circuit – aptly named The Track – but there is one further addition to the driving line-up, and he’s a four-time F1 World Champion.
Sebastian Vettel is on a mission at this Saudi Arabian karting track. The former Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin great is hosting his Race4Women [Challenge Me] event in a bid to further develop grassroots karting in the country, and by teaching these 20 young women the principles of racing, fitness and motorsport theory.
In the days leading up to the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, also hosted in Jeddah, it’s the perfect place to showcase to these women that a potential career in motorsport is very much a possibility should they want it to be. And, let’s face it, as karting tutors go you could do a lot worse than a man who has four F1 Drivers’ titles to his name.
“We had great feedback last time,” Vettel tells me, reflecting on the initial karting event he hosted at this track back in 2021. “The handful of girls and women we were able to get together – it was a great group and a great spirit last time.
“But so much has happened. We’ve been in touch and stayed in touch with the track here, people who have supported us already the first time round. There was the idea to continue, to follow up. This time we had a lot more girls and women taking interest and a much bigger group of 20 young women and girls showing up and having the courage to get behind the wheel.”
Courage is very much the right word to describe this group of assembled racers. It can be a daunting prospect getting into a go-kart, but each of them has exactly the right dose of competitiveness and enthusiasm when the action gets going.
It also speaks of a country that has transformed significantly. As of 2018 women have been allowed to drive and, coupled with a boom in motorsport coinciding with the first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021, that has led to more opportunities for this new generation.
“Generally Saudi is opening up and it’s great to see the next generation of girls and women speaking out their dreams, being able and being allowed to do a lot of the things their mothers weren’t able or allowed to do,” Vettel adds.
“There’s a lot of positive change in this country. Last time we celebrated the fact that women were allowed to drive, and I wanted to get an insight. This time there were a lot more topics and it was great to get into the exchange [with the karters] and I think it was a success. We had a blast, had a great time, shared a lot of stories and heard from them about why they’re passionate about racing.”
‘I can’t really believe that just happened!’ (Laura Winter)
The Race4Women event has been held over two days – Tuesday and Wednesday – but I’ve arrived on the second day where the on-track action is soon to be reaching its climax.
The karters have already qualified for two heat races to come later in the afternoon – the top five finishers from each race will then go on to compete in the final.
But a break in the schedule doesn’t stop Vettel from hitting the track again, only this time his student is F1 TV presenter Laura Winter; the crew here to also film a feature about the day.
“I’m still coming back down to earth a little bit – I’m still a bit giddy!” Winter says after a surreal on-track lesson.
“We asked if Seb wouldn’t mind coming out and he was really happy too, which is lovely in itself, and then I suddenly got out on track in a go-kart – suddenly aware of its power, it went a lot quicker than I thought it was going to – and I thought, ‘oh my God, I’m here with four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel, following him in a go-kart, teaching me the lines of a track and how much kerb to take'. I can’t really believe that just happened!”
Listed among one of the “maddest things” she’s done working in F1, Winter’s time on track wasn’t entirely without incident.
“He let me through at one point so he could watch what I was doing,” she says. “I was like, ‘pressure on!’ And that’s when I span, and he was following me and he hit me! So, we had a little collision!”
‘Legitimacy and credibility’ (Dania Akeel)
The energy at The Track is infectious – the joy, the camaraderie and there’s even a DJ to provide the party atmosphere. But it’s not lost as to why Vettel, and this event, are here in the first place.
“Events like this are extremely important for one reason – it is for the ladies or drivers to change their own idea of themselves,” says Dania Akeel, a Saudi Arabian former motorcycle racer who now plies her trade in rally-raid. She, too, is a motorsport pioneer in this country and has come out to support the young women racing.
“If they think they don’t have a chance and they’re just here on the weekend – and it’s quiet and they just love to drive – they feel like they’re only here for that one session and they go back to their ‘real life’. That can be the experience of a lot of people.
“But when you have an event like this, and you have Sebastian Vettel, a four-time Formula 1 World Champion coming to give them advice, that gives a signal to these ladies that they have a chance to do what he has done. That signals to these ladies that they have an opportunity to be a professional, and that they can take things to the next level.
“Events like this, they almost give legitimacy and credibility to the passion that these ladies have for the sport as opposed to it being a weekend hobby that no one knows about, and they run home after.”
As well as giving that legitimacy to their passion for motorsport, Race4Women also gives these karters an invaluable opportunity to take in advice with many queries focused on aspects we can all relate to.
“The questions they ask me, I’ve felt on track and you realise how connected we all are and how similar we all are,” Akeel explains. “At the end of it more than one of the girls told me that they were scared, they’re nervous when it’s race day.
“She’s scared when it’s competition, ‘what if I fail, what if I disappoint myself?’ These questions are universal, they stay with you until I don’t know which age, but you learn how to face yourself, you learn how to manage yourself, you learn how to calm yourself and you learn how to propel forward while having these experiences and emotions.
“I’m trying as much as I can to communicate that clearly to them, what I do as a strategy to help me move forward if and when those feelings do come up. I don’t think they’ve said anything that I couldn’t relate to – and they’re much younger than me.”
‘This is just a safe environment for them to get in and have a go’ (Oliver Oakes)
While the crowd at The Track is predominantly made up of friends and family of the participants, as a competitor you never know who might turn up to watch you showcase your talent. And, sure enough, immersed within the cohort of onlookers is an F1 Team Principal – Alpine boss Oliver Oakes.
“A friend of mine is based in Saudi Arabia – he runs the F4 Championship here – so when he said he was popping along to this I thought it would be cool to see what Sebastian is doing,” he says.
“It’s just brilliant. It’s nice to see everyone have a good time, bonding over karting. I was just saying to someone, I think every driver will admit that karting is the best years of their life. Seeing all these girls racing hard, having banter when they come off track – it’s really good to see.”
He adds: “Obviously motorsport is growing exponentially in the region here, this [the event] is obviously helping to keep that happening. You can see as well, for a lot of the girls, this is just a safe environment for them to get in and have a go at going wheel to wheel with each other, which is brilliant.”
While F1 is in town, F1 ACADEMY is also going to be racing around the streets of Jeddah this weekend, with four full-time members of the grid taking time to turn up at Race4Women and pass on their own expertise – Aston Martin’s Tina Hausmann, Red Bull’s Alisha Palmowski, Racing Bulls’ Rafaela Ferreira and Red Bull Ford’s Chloe Chambers.
And Oakes will also have an eye on proceedings in F1 ACADEMY with Hitech TGR – the junior team he still owns – running in the series, while they will be fielding Saudi Arabian Wild Card Farah AlYousef this weekend too.
“It’s kind of a small world that Farah, who’s just popped in now, obviously my Hitech team has been helping her get ready to race here in F1 ACADEMY,” Oakes explains. “[My friend] kindly lent her one of his F4 cars a couple of months back to have a go so it’s a nice full circle event with my non-Alpine hat on and my Hitech hat on.”
‘It doesn’t get better than this’ (Lina Hammadeh)
With the afternoon giving way to evening, and the sun slowly starting to dip out of sight, we have crowned the Race4Women champion following a pulsating final. Lina Hammadeh, 18, battled back from seventh to finish second in her heat, before taking the top spot in the grand finale of the day – and she was understandably delighted.
“It feels great, not only winning but being able to have been here, meet Sebastian Vettel and also to learn from him,” she says after collecting her trophy on the podium. “It was a great experience, I enjoyed racing the other girls, and also meeting them and speaking to them.
“I’ve had the chance to learn many things from Sebastian Vettel, not only on track but also about Formula 1 – since I was able to ask him a couple of questions. It was really nice to hear from him since he’s a four-time World Champion.
“It doesn’t get better than this. It’s a great event, the media, the friends that we got to bring and that watched us. It was really enjoyable.”
There are also some spectacular prizes to enjoy – the top three will all get a tour of the F1 Paddock at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, while Hammadeh will also get to test a Ferrari Challenge car.
“Who wouldn’t be!” she understandably responds when I ask how much she’s looking forward to them. But there’s also the joy of having raced to victory in front of her family – particularly her father – that shines through when speaking to her.
“I’m so happy that I got to do this in front of my father, Fadi Hammadeh, because he’s a racer as well,” she says. “He’s a champion here in the Middle East, rallying and autocross and stuff, so it was really good that he got to be here and watch me.”
‘We need to give them the stage to do it' (Sebastian Vettel)
The message from Vettel since he retired from racing in Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season is simple and consistent – there is still a race to win. It’s a phrase captured on the banners around the karting track and encapsulates the social causes that the four-time World Champion has dedicated himself to help change for the better.
Here the focus is on grassroots motorsports in Saudi Arabia, as well as providing opportunities for female racers, as he’s keen to emphasize the good the sport can do.
“If you have F1 in town, in your own country, then little girls and boys are following because their parents might be following and that’s where dreams are born,” he says.
“They want to become racing drivers and try it themselves, and that’s where it needs the support in a bigger picture to have more go-karting tracks and better facilities, more go-karts available for all these kids to try.
“There’s a lot of things you get in one go. Obviously, you increase that courage to have a feeling behind a go-kart and to be in control, it’s a way to express yourself and I think it’s a way that helps you become more courageous when it comes to other topics. You’re taking the kids off the street, you’re helping them get a feel for a go-kart and, later on, for a car, so they’ll be more safe and more responsible on the roads as well.
“There’s a lot of things that click and will go hand in hand. So, there’s a lot of reasons why we’re here and why we’re putting this all together, but to be honest it’s a true inspiration to get in touch with these girls and hear about their lives.
"For sure it’s different for kids in Germany and many countries around the globe but the dreams are very much alike. That’s what it’s about, to make sure everyone’s got the same chances and – in particular women – that they are heard, because they can do the same and that’s why it’s important.
“F1 is opening up and you see more women in the paddock. You see women on the pit wall, you see them in the garage, and they are taking action, taking part – they’re not just guests. They’re part of the team and the infrastructure. That all enlarges the little girls’ vision when they start dreaming that they are able to do that as well.”
So, what’s next in this particular mission for Vettel?
“Hopefully we’ll see that there’s more support and a real push when it comes to grassroots – and kids, whether it’s boys or girls – to receive more support or funding, to grow the infrastructure,” he explains. “So that would be great to see and why not carry on spreading the message, which is really why we’re here.
“We’re creating awareness, the kids are there, the young women are there, they’re very courageous, and the dreams are there so we need to give them the stage to do it.”

🍿 movie knights 2025 official list ⚔️
[town crier voice] HEAR YE, HEAR YE!
so the deal was originally 52 films, but y'all are great at suggestions and i have apparently missed A LOT of cinema over the years!! hence we're listing an even (and extremely optimistic) 100 titles under the cut, in no apparent order.
what: our noble quest, to watch at least one film every week
when: every friday, i'll post the upcoming week's film(s) and a ✨ lazy review ✨ of the previous week! will also update this post with links once watched
who: me (lars), sometimes theo, anyone else who wants to yap about movies or schedule a watch-along!

"Where Dreams Are Born" - Sebastian Vettel On His Race4Women Event, His Grassroots Mission, and Guiding Female Racers In Saudi Arabia
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"I can't really believe that just happened!"
Tumblr media
Listed among one of the “maddest things” she’s done working in F1, Winter’s time on track wasn’t entirely without incident.
“He let me through at one point so he could watch what I was doing,” she says. “I was like, ‘pressure on!’ And that’s when I span, and he was following me and he hit me! So, we had a little collision!”
"Legitimacy and credibility"
Tumblr media
"This is just a safe environment for them to get in and have a go"
While the crowd at The Track is predominantly made up of friends and family of the participants, as a competitor you never know who might turn up to watch you showcase your talent.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"It doesn't get better than this"
With the afternoon giving way to evening, and the sun slowly starting to dip out of sight, we have crowned the Race4Women champion following a pulsating final.
Tumblr media
"We need to give them the stage to do it"
The message from Vettel since he retired from racing in Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season is simple and consistent – there is still a race to win.
Tumblr media
That all enlarges the little girls’ vision when they start dreaming that they are able to do that as well.”So, what’s next in this particular mission for Vettel?
“Hopefully we’ll see that there’s more support and a real push when it comes to grassroots – and kids, whether it’s boys or girls – to receive more support or funding, to grow the infrastructure,” he explains. “So that would be great to see and why not carry on spreading the message, which is really why we’re here.
“We’re creating awareness, the kids are there, the young women are there, they’re very courageous, and the dreams are there so we need to give them the stage to do it.”

Driver Profiles: Max Verstappen
Updated December 2024
Tumblr media
Name: Max Emilian Verstappen
Age: 27
Nationality: Dutch (grew up in Belgium)
Years in F1: 9 (Toro Rosso 2015-May 2016, Red Bull May 2016-Present)
Number: 1 (as reigning champion) and 33
WDCs: 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024
Driving Style: Aggressive, and fearless, Verstappen is known for his strong understanding and control of his car. Famously, drivers have stated that when Verstappen is behind them, its not about if he will overtake it is about when. He is also know for his late-braking on corners and the absolute trust he seems to have with the car to keep him safe, enabling him to take bold manuvers. Other drivers who have been in the same car as him have described his style of car as being highly reactive and 'sharp' in response to movement. This gives us a glimpse of how Verstappen races, as his preferred car shows he has precise handling and pushes to the limit. He does not drive well when he feels the car is not responding precisely to his instructions.
History: Son of F1 driver Jos Verstappen, Verstappen grew up in the public eye. He started karting when he was four and started competing when he was just seven years old. He dominated his national karting stages between 2005 and 2009, winning his home provinces championship, VAS championship, the Rotax Max Challenge, the Belgian Cadet Championship, and more. He was known to be a prodigy from a young age, and reportedly during races his father would tweak something about the cart to help him learn how changes feel. This helped develop a strong intuition for his future F1 cars.
Tumblr media
(Verstappen, around 2010)
In 2010 he entered into the international karting scene, and finished second at his first KF3 World Cup after Alex Albon, but won the WSK World Series. In 2011, Verstappen won the WSK Euro Series. In the following year, Verstappen won the WSK Master Series in the KF2 class, and the South Garda Winter Cup in the KF2 class. He was the youngest driver taking part in the World Championship in KF1 class and finished eighth. In 2012 He finished second at the World Cup in the KF2 class. 2013 was his biggest year however, having progressed to the senior level KZ and KF categories. He was fifteen when he won three CIK-FIA championships in a single season: two European Championships and a World Championship, an unprecedented feat. He went only to only lose one of seven championships that year.
Tumblr media
(Verstappen when he started single-seaters)
He debuted in single seaters in 2014, driving for the Florida Winter Series. He went on to drive in F3 that year for Van Amersfoort Racing, and at age 16 placed third in his first real single seater championship.
When he was seventeen, he drew the attention of F1, and drove his first F1 car during a practice session for Toro Rosso. In 2014 he officially joined the Red Bull Junior Program, and was signed for Toro Rosso's 2015 season. He became the youngest person to ever start an F1 Grand Prix at seventeen. He had an extremely successful first season, becoming the youngest person to score points, and regularly finishing in the top 10.
Tumblr media
(Verstappen in his first year with Toro Rosso)
In 2016, Verstappen started out in Toro Rosso but by May he had been pulled up to replace Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat due to Kvyats poor performance. His first race with Red Bull was the Spanish GP, and astoundingly it was Verstappen's first win as well. This would set the tone for Verstappen's career going forward.
He had increasingly successful seasons as time went on, already fighting for the championship by 2019. But it was in 2021 that he won his first WDC, in a controversial race held in Abu Dhabi. After that Verstappen dominated F1, winning both 2022 and 2023. In 2023 he had perhaps the most dominant season aa driver ever had, and amazingly won almost every single race. In 2024, he started the season strong but midway his car seemed to lose its pace. While Verstappen is still winning the championship, it is possible there could be a major title fight in the last few races.
Tumblr media
Key Races:
2016 Spanish GP - His first win and first race with Red Bull.
2016 Brazilian GP - A race in the wet, it is considered one of the best drive sin modern F1. He dropped down the order after a pit mistake, but through intense rain and dangerous conditions was able to take a podium place. Hailed as one of the most masterful rain races anyone has ever seen
2019 Austrian GP - Famous for a late-race move on Charles Leclerc that is often seen as controversial, this was his first win in 2019. It highlighted his uncompromising attitude toward racing and pure aggression.
2021 Monaco GP - Considered the turn around in Verstappen's 2021 season, he drove a flawless race and took the championship lead
2021 Abu Dhabi - Another controversial race, with Verstappen finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton and clinching his first WDC. Controversial due to safety car in last few laps.
Any 2023 Race but Singapore, Baku, and Jeddah - Verstappen won 19 out of 22 race this season, an excessively dominant display. he lost only to his teammate Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz
Brazil 2024 - Perhaps the most masterful wet race in F1 history, Verstappen drove from P17 to win the race in incredibly tense and dangerous conditions. His overtakes were brilliant, his pace was stellar. No words.
Cheers,
-B

Credit: Anything That Moves / The poem continues, but the point is clear from the start: Bisexual people aren't believed for who they are. They're belittled and told to "choose a side," that they're bisexual for attention. It's difficult to think that this poem is over 30 years old. The poem "truly could've been written yesterday... or 50 years ago," said Marshall. "How long do we have to keep screaming the same things to the world over and over until people stop pretending we're speaking another galaxy's language?" --- The solace of Anything That Moves, however, is that even though progress has been slow, fellow bisexual people can relate to the shared experience detailed in its pages.:https://www.tumblr.com/yourartmatters-itswhatgotmehere/770848263124500480?source=share

January, culturally, environmentally and sometimes politically can be the cruelest month. I was reminded of this on the 15th day of 2025 when David Lynch, the creator of some of the most remarkable, strange and breathtaking cinema, passed away at the age of 78.
His passing was just five days after the anniversary of the death of another man who fell to Earth, David Bowie - who left us nine years ago.
The sadness from the passing of these two great people has been compounded by the frigid temperatures experienced lately (January 15-21 is historically the coldest week of winter) and positively numbing events happening in the United States.
My posts about Bowie's death anniversary prompted a friend to lend me a book entitled Andrew Potter on Decline - Stagnation, Nostalgia and Why Every Year is the Worst One Ever.
My friend lent me the book because it whimsically ties the beginning of this decline to Bowie's death in 2016. Through chapters on Progress, Stagnation, Politics, Reason and the Pandemic, Potter convincingly connects the dots showing the degrading effects of populism, isolationism, totalitarianism and other toxic isms.
The book was published in 2021, before Trump's second term and the exponential rise of artificial intelligence, but its message is just as profound.
The loss of David Lynch in 2025 just days before Trump's second inauguration left me feeling doubly lost.
Not only had Lynch pulled me into the sometimes strange and wonderful world of cinema with films like Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, which I had enjoyed immensely in their early days at the New Yorker repetory theatre in London, Ontario. But he also helped through a difficult read when I saw Dune, and was lulled back into Frank Herbert's science fiction masterpiece.
Like Bowie's music (and film work for that matter), Lynch's films were a treasure to me. On a grander scale, after reading Potter's book, I worried that Lynch's passing is marking an even steeper decline for the future.
But I was buoyed by a clip of an interview with musician/spoken word artist Henry Rollins that speaks to this challenging time.
"This is not a time to be dismayed. This is punk rock time. This is what Joe Strummer trained you for. It is now time to go. You're a good person, that means more now than ever," Rollins said. "You can be thunderous in your own life and being cool to the eight people around you. And it rubs off...goodness is viral."

As we near the end of the first month of the second Trump administration, the media blitz that has come from various executive orders, pardons, and proclamations has left the mainstream press somewhat unsure as to what issue to make their hill to die on. As the fight against the administration finds its path of least resistance (activist judges), I thought it fitting to pause for a moment and look at the current media ecosystem as it pertains to Trump’s second term, and what we’re currently seeing on our screens as a taste of the next four years.
The first four weeks of this administration have been marked by the breakneck speed and volume of executive orders, with most (although not all) having now met their challenges in federal courts throughout the country by a clown car of activist judges. Natalie Winters of Steve Bannon’s War Room has done some good work on this, showing 2021 footage from Rhode Island Federal District Judge John McConnell (which just goes to show that there are no good McConnells in politics) openly expressing his views about letting his personal opinions affect particular rulings and the judicial process more generally.
