And as humans have been evolving we have felt the need to create artificial light, which is greatly used in interior desin and architecture.

Most of us would have probably had an experience in which the lighting in a place was just not it, and it might have even caused physical problems, like headache, discomfort on the eyes, and even made us feel more tired than usual. And nowadays, light is an essential element to create a safe and comfortable work environment. Specially because it is natural daylight that our eyes and body perceive as more comfortable because of the way that our eyes are able to discern colors with it in comparison to artificial lighting which does not reproduce the colour spectrum like sun-light does, our retinas sense this and have to overcompensate for it, which causes our eyes to react by being tired more easily.

Dezeen's guide to the architecture of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

With the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics due to commence on 4 February, Dezeen rounds up the most architecturally significant venues, including a new stadium by Populous and the world's first permanent structure for big air extreme snow jumping.

The majority of the venues for the upcoming Winter Games are not new, with some built as venues for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics as the city becomes the first ever to host both editions of the 16-day competition.

Most famous among these is the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, which was designed by Swiss architecture studio Herzog & de Meuron.

This system of reusing stadiums follows the precedent set by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and has been touted by the organizing committee as a more sustainable approach.

However, some notable new structures will also be on display as the Olympic cauldron is aflame once again in China.

Beijing National Stadium by Herzog & de Meuron (2007)

Better known as the Bird's Nest, this Herzog & de Meuron-designed stadium is easily recognisable as the main venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics thanks to its steel lattice envelope.

No sporting competitions will take place here next month, but the 80,000-seater stadium, for which acclaimed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was a design consultant, will reprise its role as the host of the opening and closing ceremonies for the upcoming winter games.

Beijing National Aquatics Center by PTW Architects (2007)

Designed by a consortium including Australian studio PTW Architects and nicknamed the Water Cube, the National Aquatics Center is another 2008 Olympics venue being repurposed for the Winter Olympics.

Organizers say it has been transformed into the Ice Cube with the addition of ice-making and climate control equipment. Rather than hosting swimming and diving, this time around it will act as a curling rink.

National Speed Skating Oval by Populous (2021) 

Designed by stadium specialist architecture studio Populous, the National Speed Skating Oval is the only new venue built in Beijing's Olympic Park for the 2022 Winter Games, having been constructed on the site of the hockey and archery fields used in 2008.

It has been dubbed the Ice Ribbon in reference to the 22 light-up strands encircling the stadium, with Populous promising that the 12,000 spectators will hear "every sound from skates on ice" around the 400-metre race track.

Beijing National Indoor Stadium by Glöckner Architekten GmbH (2007)

Another 2008 legacy venue with a playful moniker – in this case The Fan, after its resemblance to a traditional Chinese folding fan – the National Indoor Stadium will be swapping rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining and handball for ice hockey at Beijing 2022.

The 20,000-seater arena was designed by German firm Glöckner Architekten GmbH.

Wukesong Sports Centre by David Manica and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (2008)

The Wukesong Sports Centre, officially known as the Cadillac Center, staged the basketball tournament at the 2008 Summer Games and has since become one of Beijing's major multipurpose arenas.

It will share responsibility for hosting the ice hockey at the upcoming Olympics with the National Indoor Stadium, making use of an ice rink that can be converted back into a basketball court in under six hours that was installed in 2015 as part of a renovation worked on by Populous.

Golden perforated aluminium ribbons envelop the building, designed by David Manica when working for HOK Sport – now Populous – in association with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design.

Big Air Shougang by TeamMinus (2019) 

Perhaps the most eye-catching structure to appear in this list, Big Air Shougang is among the small number of new venues built for Beijing 2022, where it will host the skiing and snowboarding "big air" extreme jumping events. According to the Games' organisers, it is the world's first permanent big air structure.

The venue was designed by TeamMinus, a studio led by professor Zhang Li, who also heads the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University.

Clad in colourful perforated aluminium panels, it has been constructed on the site of one of Beijing's largest former steel mills, with the plant's four industrial cooling towers still standing watch.

Capital Indoor Stadium by Ming Xiong (1968)

Built in 1968, the Capital Indoor Stadium hosted table tennis matches in 1971 as part of the ping-pong diplomacy programme credited with thawing relations between the USA and China during the Cold War.

The arena was renovated ahead of the 2008 Olympics, where it staged the volleyball tournament, and will be home to the figure skating and short track speed skating competitions as athletes descend on Beijing once again next month.

National Sliding Centre by Atelier Li Xinggang (2021) 

This 1,975 metre-long sliding track, in the Yanqing Winter Olympic Zone 75 kilometres north of Beijing, is characterised by a tiled wooden roof across its entire length and will host the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge events at February's Games.

China's first sliding centre and only the third to be built in Asia, it was designed by the studio of architect Li Xinggang within the China Architecture Design & Research Group, which also designed Yangqing Olympic Village and the National Alpine Skiing Centre.

National Ski Jumping Centre by TeamMinus (2020) 

Another new venue for Beijing 2022 designed by TeamMinus, the National Ski Jumping Centre has been nicknamed Snow Ruyi on account of its likeness to a ruyi, a traditional Chinese sceptre talisman associated with power and good fortune.

At the top of the slope is a 40-metre high circular viewing platform containing a panoramic restaurant, with a judges' tower halfway down and a stadium at the bottom.

The centre will stage the ski jump and Nordic combined events at this year's Winter Olympics, before becoming a training facility for Chinese athletes and tourist resort. It is located in the Games' Zhangjiakou Zone at a popular ski destination 180 kilometres northwest of Beijing, to which visitors will be transported via a newly built intercity railway.

Scarcity of raw materials makes it more difficult to get a foot on the housing ladder

The prices for solid structural timber have risen by 83 percent within a month, and for roof battens by 45.7 percent

Cables are not available, sockets are sold out and the prices for roof battens have risen by 45.7 percent: if you build a house now, you could be occupied for a long time. And pay a lot.

Carina Angeli actually wanted to move into her house a long time ago. The 30-year-old and her partner are currently building a single-family home in Regensburg, construction began in the summer of 2019. "It takes a lot of time," says Angeli. The windows were delivered seven months late, and there are other problems too. The floor layer, whom Angeli hired months ago, cannot deliver: she was told that the quality of the material that he received from his wholesaler was too poor. And other material is hard to obtain.

Bavaria's construction industry has been struggling with a lack of materials for months - and with rising prices for building materials. In the beginning there was mainly a lack of wood, nowadays there was a lack of metal, rubber or plastic, sometimes electronic or sanitary products. The consequences: construction times are getting longer, planning is standing still, building owners and service providers are facing additional costs. The extent of the need is difficult to estimate, even for industry experts. "We had hoped that the whole thing would decrease in the second half of the year," says Wolfgang Schubert-Raab. He is president of the regional association of Bavarian building guilds[1] and, together with his wife Gisela Raab, runs the construction company of the same name[2] in Ebensfeld, Upper Franken. When he calls, he's stuck in a traffic jam, nothing is happening, as appropriate. He has been working in the industry since 1983, says Schubert-Raab, material was always in short supply, steel for example. But there has not been a deficiency like this since the end of the Second World War. Even filigree floors and ceilings or prefabricated parts are hardly available. "You can imagine what a joy it is on the construction site."

After all, work continues not only on Schubert-Raab's construction sites, but also on many others. Short-time work only seems to be in fashion at the moment. In general, the shortage of materials does not affect everyone equally. If you ask around in the industry, you will also meet companies and builders who hardly report any problems. A site manager reports delivery problems and delays of around two or three weeks; the targeted completion dates are to be kept anyway. However, he could not understand why the German manufacturers of building materials let themselves be carried away by such a "sell-out".

Unexpected high demand in building materials

In fact, building materials are also in short supply elsewhere. The causes are manifold. Among other things, the global economy has recovered from the corona shock faster than expected; the high demand surprised many manufacturers. Important production facilities in Asia and America were paralyzed by the winter weather, floods or other disasters. A construction boom in the USA forced local companies to buy a lot of wood abroad, including in Germany and Bavaria. In May, the Federal Statistical Office[3] registered record prices for wood in this country: for solid structural timber they had increased by 83 percent compared to the same month last year, and for roof battens by 45.7 percent.

Seen in this way, client Angeli was still lucky: her roof is already on. "According to our carpenter, we would pay twice as much if we only started building the roof now," she says. And yet, the house will not yet be finished. It was only thanks to contacts that Angeli was able to hire another floor layer at short notice. But he cannot install the originally planned epoxy resin floor - again the raw material is missing. "There was only one pattern to choose from, either I'll have to take it or wait for months," says Angeli. "But of course I am very happy that we are getting a floor at all."

Creative recycling: demolished supermarkets as a treasure trove

Yusuf Yesilova can understand the client's displeasure. The electrician is the managing director of eTechnik Schmidt GmbH[4] in Regenstauf. "We almost have construction freeze this week because we can't get our parts," he complains. There are no cables and plastic parts such as sockets or switches. When material finally arrives, it will be 50 to 70 percent more expensive than usual. There are now almost weekly price increases. He can hardly make offers to customers, "I don't know how prices will develop". In the end, there is always the risk of being left with the additional costs.

The industry has already been questioning how resources can be used more efficiently for the sake of the climate. Those who can have postponed orders in the past few months, provided that budgets, contracts and all parties involved agree. Sometimes companies help each other out with material. In some places, forest owners and timber companies want to join forces for more planning security, for example in Traunstein and in Berchtesgadener Land. The Federation of German Builders, Architects and Engineers[5] also calls for a "regulatory strengthening" of the building materials market - of course "without restricting the global building material trade". The availability of sustainable raw materials must be given a higher priority.

New ways of recycling and upcyclingcan also help selectively. They tried out a building materials exchange at the Raab construction company. The equipping of two demolition supermarkets was given to customers in the region free of charge. The "experiment", as Gisela Raab calls it, was successful: a number of parts that would otherwise have ended up in the scrap heap were used elsewhere, glass panes, cooling devices, rain gutters. When the experiment began, the material shortage was not yet an issue. But when the prices rose, suddenly even the wooden beams from the roof were in demand. "We are now considering how we can consolidate this project," says Raab. A property developer has already expressed interest.

At least with wood, the situation seems to be stabilizing. A general end to the material shortage is not in sight for Wolfgang Schubert-Raab. "We basically live from day to day in the hope that we can keep working." Even Carina Angeli doesn't sound really optimistic when she says that her house should be ready by winter at the latest. There is too much concern that there will be bad news about delivery times and costs in between.

Looking for climate-friendly concrete

Concrete is mankind's most successful building material. But because the production process pollutes the climate, a replacement is urgently needed. After all, a few approaches are promising.

The T3 Werkpants are made for the colder months, as they are fleece lined for additional insulation.  I’ve been wearing mine for a couple weeks and they truly do make a difference.

For warmer climates, the T2 Werkpants are not lined, but have all of the same features as the T3. For even warmer climates, the T1 Werkpants are even thinner and more breathable than the T2.  I have all 3 versions, most of which I have purchased myself and they’re quickly becoming my favorite pants for not only working, but for a casual look when I leave the house.

Days are much shorter in the later months of the year, making it extremely important to have a good lighting solution on the jobsite.  No one matches the collection of lighting solutions that Milwaukee has and one of their latest releases is the upgraded LED Rocket Light/Charger.

With an output of 6,000 lumens on high, this light can be set up and extended to 7’ high in a matter of seconds. The max height helps reduce shadows and its 3 heads can all be angled separately to provide both ambient and task lighting.  The onboard changer can also charge M18 batteries while plugged into an extension cord. I’ve had this Rocket light for a few weeks and, if you only need one light that can pretty much do it all, this is a great place to start, but you’ll have to pay for all of those features.
