Character Intro: Puck
Tumblr media
Chaotic Good // ENFP // Hufflepuff // Pisces // Pansexual - Panromantic// He/Him // Russian-Ethiopian-American // Playlist // Pinterest
I was listening to “The Cult of Dionysus” by The Orion Experience (rec’d by one of my friends) when I first decided how I’d like to write for Puck. I’d had it on a loop, and I was sort of daydreaming about Midway Through Summer’s Bullshit, and I thought this sounds a little like Puck. I assembled his playlist accordingly. It’s full of bops.
Backstory
Puck grew up in a comfortable middle-class suburban life, which of course means that he wanted to get outta there before the suburbs trapped him. He’s not exactly a rebel, but he doesn’t exactly fit that suburban mold. He is, as I like to say, “an Ohio mood”. Puck’s kind of scared of becoming his parents, living their boring, predictable life in the suburbs.
Present
Currently, Puck is a student at the University of Dayton, studying computer science. He also works for a small dating website, Athens’ Arbitrator, as a programmer and mod. He’s currently in a polyamorous with his boss, Oberon, and Tiara, Oberon’s wife, which they’re keeping on the down-low.
Puck is a huge hedonist and prefers to escape from his problems than face them, especially when it’s something large. He spends most of his time with the rest of the “programming pixies” of Athens’ Arbitrator, getting high and occasionally coding.
Excerpt
Puck’s wrapped up in a Hobo Johnson hoodie, carrying his plastic bag of bang, Rockstar, and condoms from the convenience store down the road. He’s not sure when he stopped being embarrassed about buying energy drinks in bulk and boxes of Trojans, but he’s pretty happy about it. Makes prepping for a coding binge easier. In a house of five, someone’s gotta be the responsible one.
And by the responsible one, he means, of course, the one who supplies everyone with energy drinks, condoms, and alcohol, and nothing else. Mustard can handle the rest. They’re good at taking care of people. Puck? Well, Puck’s good at making sure everyone has a good time.
A stop at the liquor store, foolproof fake ID getting him all the Bailey’s and Smirnoff he can afford, then back to the house.
Playlist
Puck’s playlist is full of bops and bangers. Another certified awesome playlist. The highlights include:
The Cult of Dionysus - The Orion Experience
Obsessed With You - The Orion Experience
Like Sexy Dynamite - The Orion Experience
Everybody Gets High - MISSIO
Take a Slice - Glass Animals
Hallucinogenics - Matt Maeson
Young and Menace - Fall Out Boy
High Enough - K.Flay
Feel Something Good - Biltmore
Aesthetic
Pink, being awake for way too long, that hazy feeling when you feel like you’re floating off the ground, Frappuccinos, Pink Drinks, taking a caffeine pill and washing it down with an energy drink, cute stickers from Redbubble, laying on the grass in the afternoon, when a guy smiles and he has dimples, freckles against dark skin, the party scene from Scott Pilgrim vs the World, being awake when the sun rises because you didn’t go to sleep the night before

Sandra shrugs, eyes sparkling with understated mischief. “There are plenty of ways to do drunk therapy. You can steal some shopping carts and ride them around town. You can cry on the sidewalk. You can be the queen of the world.” She looks down at the ground, as though remembering her shyness. Caught up in the moment, she can be a poet, but in her normal life, Sandra seems like the type who keeps these thoughts to herself and maybe the Notes section of her phone if she chooses to share them at all. “Unless you don’t like doing any of those things. Which is valid, too.”

WIP Intro: Midway Through Summer’s Bullshit
Tumblr media
Genre: Adult literary fiction // Status: Drafting // Themes: relationships, coming out, accepting yourself, freedom // Pinterest // Playlist // WIP page
Midway Through Summer’s Bullshit is a work I’ve needed to write for a long time. I’ve been putting it off because I’ve been a little apprehensive and unsure about it, but I feel like now is the best time to write for it, especially since it’s the springtime and this book has some big spring/summer energy.
Also, this book is full of LGBT women, because why not? Shakespeare, but full of women? Amazing. Fantastic. A+. My gay ass is in love.
Character intros are coming soon!
What’s this about?
Puck is a programmer for Athens' Arbitrator and a hedonist. One night, in a drunken attempt to impress his boss/lover Oberon, he matches together a group of unfortunate women who keep bugging him about the FAQ.
Now that these women are tangled up in the situation, Puck seeks the help of Tiara, his lover and Oberon's wife. As they work together to fix the situation, they realize that their relationship with Oberon might not be the best.
(This is, just to cover mon derrière, a very loose description of a plot that has not yet been written, and therefore might be up for change anytime soon.)
Who are these people?
Puck (Chaotic Good, ENFP, Hufflepuff, Pisces) is a programmer and hedonist who's trying to find love amongst his search for pleasure.
Lei Wen (Lawful Neutral, INFJ, Slytherin, Aquarius) is an enterprising woman who wants to escape her controlling family in order to live her life the way she wants to.
Ellen Lund (True Neutral, INFP, Hufflepuff, Cancer)is a sad woman who has just come out of a bad relationship and wants to make a new name for herself.
Sandra Kilduff (Neutral Good, ISFP, Gryffindor, Leo) is a woman who hasn't been accepted by her family, but is determined to not allow that to hinder her progress.
Demetra Outerridge (Chaotic Neutral, ESTP, Gryffindor, Sagittarius) is a bored woman who thinks the world has nothing to offer her in terms of excitement.
Oberon Ibarra (Lawful Neutral, ENTP, Slytherin, Capricorn) is a businessman who runs and owns Athens' Arbitrator and is quietly in a polyamorous relationship with Puck and Tiara.
Tiara Ibarra (Chaotic Good, ISFJ, Slytherin, Virgo) is a woman who loves living the expensive life, though she has a kind, golden heart.
Moth, Mustard, Sweetpea, & Webby (“Coding Fairies”) are Puck’s fellow programmers for Athens’ Arbitrator.
The Theatre Kids are a group of drama kids who get tangled up in the mess.
What’s the soundtrack?
This book is full of jams! I actually have had this playlist downloaded for a solid one or two months, just because I love it so much.
The songs I’ve been bopping to most recently have been:
I O U - You Me At Six
Take a Slice - Glass Animals
Smokey Eyes - Lincoln
Mr Loverman - Ricky Montgomery
Girls Like Girls - Hayley Kiyoko
Handmade Heaven - MARINA
Who’s interested?

Quote
There’s a difference from the high from the pills and the high from the sex. It’s the indescribable difference between one hair and the next, the knife-thin, nearly-imperceptible difference between one moment in time and the moment right after it. That difference only makes sense if you’ve experienced it before.

Character Introduction: Puck
Tumblr media
ENFP - Gemini - Ravenclaw - Chaotic Good - Pansexual - Pinterest Board
(Warning for drugs and unhealthy relationships)
Who is this, anyways?
Puck is from my “remix” of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Halfway Through Summer’s Bullshit. He’s a hedonistic, romantic college student, coding for the up-and-coming dating website Athens’ Arbitrator.
As is typical of my characters, Puck is a Huge Mess. He doesn’t have the sad backstory I typically brand my characters with. Instead, he’s dealing with all that sad stuff in real time. He’s in a pretty bad relationship, but he’s trying to distract himself from the this is bad thoughts with caffeine, alcohol, sex, weed- y’know, all that good stuff- with the thin veil of hedonism. Puck doesn’t make the best life choices (especially when it comes to taking care of himself), but, for some reason, he believes himself to be a love expert. If you know A Midsummer Night’s Dream, then you know what that means.
Puck’s Jams
Puck’s playlist really came to me before most of the rest of the story did. I was (still am) super obsessed with the song “The Cult of Dionysus” by The Orion Experience, and I thought, hedonism, huh?. Thus began the association of Puck with Dionysus, partying, and hedonism, which was pretty much already in my mind. His playlist is one of my favorites. I listened to it almost non-stop in the early summer of 2019.
Particular highlights include:
The Cult of Dionysus - The Orion Experience
I'm feeling devious / You're looking glamorous / Let's get mischievous / And polyamorous / Wine and women and wonderful vices / Welcome to the cult of Dionysus
We could take a holiday in the month of May / Run free and play in fields of flowers / Pass the hours making love is how we'll pray
Or start a secret society for the wild and free / Our ideology is "You can do what you want / Too much is never enough" / We are the light, we are the life / We are the envy of the gods above
Habits (Stay High) - Tove Lo
You're gone and I gotta stay high / All the time, to keep you off my mind
Staying in my play pretend, where the fun ain't got no end / Oh, can't go home alone again, need someone to numb the pain
Everybody Gets High - MISSIO
Once upon a time in a land far away / There lived a little boy and he drank all day / Friends called him stupid and his brothers called him gay / Emptied all the bottles 'til the pain went away
Whiskey was his friend, he didn't have another / Vicodin his vice, his real and only lover (yup) / Smoked a pack or two, it never was a problem / Popped a pill or two, they really made him blossom (yup)
Obsessed With You - The Orion Experience
My friends, they just don't understand / They cannot see my point of view / They say it's gotten out of hand / That I'm obsessed with you
Your smile sets my heart aflame / Electrocute me with your eyes / The very mention of your name / My stomach fills with butterflies / Your love is better than cocaine / I need you more than oxygen / I've got it bad again / An O-B-S-E-S-S-I-O-N
Excerpt
Okay, not half bad. Not bad at all. Puck grins.
He wonders if he should get some coffee. He’s pretty sure he has one foot in the grave already, and coffee could be a finishing move, but also, anything vaguely candy-flavored and caffeine-filled is something he needs all day, every day.
No wonder it’s called a caffeine addiction.
Puck yawns. Yeah, it’s coffee time. He wiggles into last night’s jeans.

Writeblr Intro
I just realized that I never did an actual intro for my Writeblr. Oops!
Howdy, Y’all!
Hi! My name’s Morgan. I am an 18-year-old Creative Writing major. I’m wlw and I use she/her pronouns.
My lemon theme comes from my love of lemon-scented candles, as well as lemon bars, lemon poppy seed muffins, and lemon tea, one of my favorite things to drink when I write. Milk tea is also a favorite of mine, but sparingly, due to my unfortunate lactose intolerance.
What I Do
I’ve gotten super into literary fiction within the past couple years, and it’s become my main genre. That new attachment makes sense, as I’m super attached to my characters, and writing character-driven stories have been my jam since my first failed novel at age 11. Most of my characters, like myself, are LGBT+.
I read a lot of literary fiction and a select few of my favorite YA books, though I’ve been getting into a little Stephen King as of late.
I post a lot of writing tips, and while I try to do writing updates, I often get so wrapped up in my writing that I forget to do updates. I also do character quirk and habits posts!
My WIPs
Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist - Kam, a physics major and NASA enthusiast, deals with his repressed emotions, the traumatic aftereffects of his brother’s mental health issues, and other mental health-related issues, all while trying to support Zach, his best friend and fellow NASA enthusiast, as they survive their first year at their prestigious college.
Jeez Take the Wheel - Ambiel, a slacker angel is given one last chance to prove himself worthy of being an angel before he is subjected to the worst fate an angel could ever meet: Falling. With the help of his husband Lucifer, an assortment of angels and demons, and some of the most prominent Biblical figures, he discovers that not everything is as it seems up in PARADISE.
He’s Like An Ocean - In the summer of ‘64, two blind young men are brought together by a move, sparking a summertime romance.
Rose & Jules - A Romeo and Juliet retelling about lesbians.
Hamish - A Hamlet retelling in the modern era. Upon learning of his best friend’s father’s death, Horacio accompanies Hamish to the funeral, entering a terrifying world he’d never thought he would witness-- that of the rich. It’s a world where only the scheming survive, and everyone is out for everyone else’s blood.
Midway Through Summer’s Bullshit - A Midsummer Night’s Dream retelling, also in the modern era. Puck is a programmer who cares about few things: continuing his hedonistic lifestyle, the dating website he programs, and his open relationship with Oberon, his boss, and his wife, Tiara. When Oberon instructs him to take matters into his own hands on the matching process, chaos ensues around four unlucky college students: Lei, Lys, Ellen, and Dmitrii.

Lessons in Humanity Camp NaNo 2020 Wrap-Up
Tumblr media
I’ve finished Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist and y’all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for one of those huge, all-inclusive posts about my WIP that exactly no one asks for! (And the crowd groans at the migraine-inducing thought of another one!)
(Check out my WIP intro and WIP page for Lessons in Humanity if you’re interested in learning more about the story!)
A Brief History
Lessons in Humanity began as an avenue for me to talk about my depression and anxiety as a 12-year-old. Basically, I just made these characters’ lives miserable, and then I got super attached to the characters and thought man, they deserve an actual narrative. And thus, six years later, I’m projecting my fear of going off to college on my own and my mental illnesses onto these characters. I like to say that, as I have matured, so has this story. This book holds a piece of my soul help.
The Purpose of the Rewrite
This particular pass-though was more about changing a couple things in Lessons in Humanity than fine-tuning things like most of my novel rewrites. There were a couple big things I edited, including the setting and tweaking some of the subplots. (I feel like there are still issues with the middle and a couple stylistic problems with the prose in places, but I’ll fix those at a later point.)
What I’ve Learnt
This runthrough of Lessons in Humanity has made me realize that I am good at writing complex dialogue between these specific characters. Because Lessons in Humanity used to be from Kam’s perspective, I was sort of blinded from the nuance in my own story (Kam has very little situational awareness/ability to read subtext). But this re-write has made me realize: these characters are very nuanced and have a lot of complex moments between them. And the character dynamics are just as complex as the dialogue. It turns out that I am better at writing subtext than I thought I was, which is awesome!
Highlights!
It was difficult to find non-spoilery highlights, but these are some parts I take particular pride in.
Tumblr media
Vic likes to go on late-night drives all the time. Sometimes, he would take Gerard and Kam with him, when they weren’t busy. In the wintertime, as Vic drove them outside of Dayton, the snowflakes would catch in the headlights, making it look like they were heading through space at warp drive instead of down 70  in the general direction of Columbus. They were purposeless drives, through the rain or snow or clear nights, stars more visible the further they got from their city, while Vic played whatever music he wanted. Sometimes they would talk, other times they wouldn’t.
Zach doesn’t go on purposeless drives the same way that Vic likes to. He’s more worried about gas, about gas prices, about gas mileage, always so worried about something.
Kam likes that worry. Zach without his anxieties wouldn’t be Zach at all. Ruth once said it’s the imperfections that make people worthwhile when defending a character in a book she’d read. Zach, without every imperfection of his-- without his stutter, without his uncertainties, without his need to cling to other people-- would not be worthwhile.
Tumblr media
For the rest of the ride home, Kam stares at the picture. They’re in their graduation caps, smiling so hard it looks like they’ll be stuck like that forever. Zach has spent that entire week talking about nothing but the future, beautiful in its hypothetical as anything. He’d go to college and live in a studio apartment with his love, doing what he loves, for the rest of his life. He and Kam talked about NASA internships in Florida, in Texas-- wherever they could get them together-- with the same giddiness they talked about what college to go to and their favorite Star Wars characters. Their senior year was full of dreams and hard work.
Zach was still in love with Chai. Kam was still okay. They were living at their homes. A lot has changed since then. Kam shudders at that thought, but then he looks at Zach, at how he’s sneaking glances at Kam, checking out how he likes the playlist, and there’s that feeling again, the sweaty-palmed, gravitational pull, and he thinks, I think I can be okay with this.
Tumblr media
Zach closes his eyes. His face is wet from crying, raw from rubbing at it, red all over. Even then, even after what’s happened, he still looks almost beautiful. There’s something about the lighting in an art museum that makes everything look like art, even raw emotion. It rounds out like the patheticness of breaking down in public into something artful. Zach doesn’t look anything like a model, but he does look like art.
Tumblr media
Stars will continue to form and break, making black holes and neutron stars and supernovas. The Earth will continue to orbit the Sun, the Moon will continue to orbit the Earth. Life will continue.
Tumblr media
Why? Kam wants to ask. It’s a question he’s been acquainted with ever since he was young. Why?, he would ask, pointing to objects as a child. Why?, he would ask, when he learned the simple sciences of the universe and wanted to understand how exactly they worked. Why?, he would ask, when someone would tell him not to do something that made sense to him.
And the Jams
The Lessons in Humanity playlist is pretty lit and I recommend it.
Tumblr media
What Comes Next?
I’m likely going to work on either He’s Like An Ocean or Midway Through Summer’s Bullshit, which are two works I highly highly recommend keeping up on!

Last Line Tag
I was tagged by @erinbeatty to share the last line of my current WIP. Thank you so much!
This is the last line I’ve written in my WIP Midway Through Summer’s Bullshit, during a scene where I was listening to my playlist Occupied Bedrooms in Boujee Apartments, so you can imagine what’s going on here.
The weight in Puck’s stomach contrasts against the sky-like feeling of his high, nearly dragging him from the clouds, were it not for Oberon’s constant application of affection.
I’m going to go ahead and tag @aelenko, @nootwrites, @hellsigns, and @transboywriting, if y’all would like to do it!
