WIP Re-Intro: Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist
Tumblr media
Genre: Literary Fiction, Coming-of-Age | Status: Rewriting | Playlist | Pinterest
Way back in the day—I think on my old account, which I lost the password and the email for—, I wrote a WIP intro for Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist. Looking back, it’s not up to the standards that I hold now, which is a sign that things have changed for the better. Things have also changed since then.
Lessons in Humanity is my oldest work. This year, it turns ten years old. That’s older than 3/4 of my sister’s kids, older than my relationship, and older than even my own name. It’s crazy to think that I’ve been writing this book for almost half of my life, and crazier still that I keep changing things about it. These are characters I made when I was a lonely, angsty tweenager who was feeling weird things about my gender and place in the world.
The first draft of Lessons in Humanity, which was called We’re All Dead After All, was a disaster of depression that honestly concerns me, looking back at it. I was deeply sad at this time. Things have vastly improved since then, though I still do like a tragic story every now and then.
It’s no longer a story drenched in my own pre-teen depression; it’s a story about growing up and changing. I think that’s what makes it so personal to me; that I’ve been changing things about it as I’ve grown up and changed.
Lessons in Humanity is about Kam Suzuki and his best friend Zach Amsel as they begin their first semester at Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio). While there, Kam has a difficult time adjusting to the change and finds himself crumbling under the weight of some issues he has yet to deal with.
A more literal way to put it is: Kam experiences the absolute Hell I went through (mentally) when I graduated university.
It’s more of a literary fiction character study than something with a big, overarching plot. Think My Year of Rest and Relaxation literary fiction versus The Secret History literary fiction. Nothing big and grand happens in it. It’s a quiet story about a guy slowly wearing himself into nothing and then building himself back up (with the help of his friends). There’s a romantic subplot that I only ended up adding because it felt natural.
I think what makes Lessons in Humanity so important to me isn’t just that I’ve been working on it for almost half my life. It’s also that, whenever I go through a difficult time of change, I come back to it. Case in point: I’m writing this update right now because, in six weeks, the American branch of my company will lay us all off. Lessons in Humanity brings me comfort when I feel directionless because Kam feels the same way. Dare I call it my comfort work.
As a (likely-autistic) trans guy myself, Kam was me before I was even me. For all the time I’ve been writing him, Kam has been a way to understand myself and the things I felt. Of course he’s like me.
My biggest hope with this book is that it does for others what it’s been doing for me. I love Lessons in Humanity when I’m feeling unsure and afraid of change. If it can comfort other people in those times—or any other time—, then I consider it to be a success, no matter what. The idea of Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist being someone’s comfort book makes me want to cry.
I haven’t done a full rewrite of Lessons in Humanity since 2020. Since then, I’ve gone to university and gotten (part) of the full experience, and I’m going to add quite a bit of realism to what wasn’t accurate before.
(My husband and I are going to go on a small trip to Oxford, Ohio in October once the layoffs are finished so I can get a little bit of a refresher on the town. I haven’t been in two years, and that was back when I was doing Doordash.)
Kam Suzuki
One of my first ever queer characters, Kam will always hold a dear place in my heart. It’s not that much of a joke when I say that Kam is my self-insert character. When you list out our traits, we look almost the same. And yet, I do take some steps to make Kam a little different from me. I take aspects of people in my life that I love (which I do for all of my characters) that are far different from me and put them in him.
Despite being obsessed with his physical fitness, Kam is someone who doesn’t deal with his problems. He locks them in his chest and lets them claw away at him until he can’t stand it anymore. Unfortunately, that happens to him during the events of Lessons in Humanity. There’s some stuff he’s been holding in for far too long, like his trauma from walking in on his twin brother’s suicide attempt, along with his general hatred of things changing and fear of abandonment.
Kam’s lifelong dream is to work for NASA. He’s been obsessed with space and science since he was a small child, so of course, he’s a Physics major. He’s also the type of person who works himself to the bone for success. (In this way, we are the same.)
Zach Amsel
Something I love about Zach is that it feels like he’s the other part of me. What Kam didn’t get, it seems like Zach got. Zamsel is the type of indie soft boy that I easily catch crushes for, with my “anxious but slutty bisexual” energy and unruly curly hair.
When it comes to Zamsel, I would just like to say: his playlist is composed of a lot of The Front Bottoms. He’s a sad boy who gets into a lot of bad situations with toxic romantic partners that take advantage of him. While I’ve changed the timeline of a couple relationships of his, the fact that he’s willing to get with almost anyone who shows interest in him is equal parts depressing and frustrating. For both everyone in the novel and myself.
Bad taste aside, Zamsel is a sweet guy with an incredible competitive streak. He and Kam have been competing with each other for years now, and they still push each other towards success.
Nikki Espinosa-Jasso
Nikki is a Mechanical Engineering student who shares an art class with Kam and Zamsel. She’s a year older and wiser, a bit jaded, and overall, a little abrasive on the surface, but she has a heart of gold. I think we’ve all met a person like her. Her main love languages are acts of service and getting food together.
She’s receiving what is pretty much a total overhaul. Where she used to be a quasi-mother figure to Kam and Zach, I’ve decided to make her a little more feral and a lot less maternal. Nikki needs to be a more interesting person outside of the boys.
Vic Suzuki
Kam’s brother who is still in high school since he didn’t skip a grade when Kam did. When I first created him, he was your typical 2014-era emo, which has now become a 2024 Tiktok alt boy, I guess. Blue hair, lots of piercings, black hoodies under leather jackets, bold tattoos, bisexuality. He was my gender goal when I created him, and honestly, I’m pretty damn close to it right now.
In the past, Vic was depressed to the point of attempting suicide, which Kam walked in on and was traumatized by. Vic doesn’t know this. He’s gotten better since then, and has far better coping mechanisms. Honestly, he has some of the best mental health in the book, which is a huge change from how he was in WADAA.
He has goals now (that don’t include being dead). Vic is trying to line up a tattoo apprenticeship when he graduates high school.
Gerard Shimmish
Kicked out of his parent’s house for being gay, Gerard has been living with the Suzuki family for about a year and a half. He’s Vic’s boyfriend and best friend, and a general ray of sunshine. We don’t see as much of Gerard as we did in WADAA, which is a shame. Gerard is a character I pour a lot of my optimism into.
His big thing is helping people. He wants to be a social worker or a psychiatrist. Something where he works with LGBT youth like himself.
He’s getting some minor character edits to make him a little more interesting, but overall, I think Gerard’s a sweetheart. I might borrow some traits from my husband to give him some more depth.

WIP Intro: Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist
Tumblr media
Genre: Adult literary fiction // Status: Drafted Several Times Over // Themes: Relationships, healing, mental health, self-image // Word Count: 101,476 // Pinterest Board // Playlist // WIP Page
When I was 12, I thought something along the lines of “yeah, I can write a novel”, made a bunch of cringey characters, and slapped the name We’re All Dead After All on it. Oh boy, was that a ride. Now, six years later, I’m still working with these characters, but I have changed literally everything about WADAA, including the name.
Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist is my oldest and most loved work. It’s grown as I have, in complexity and quality. It can be an absolute disaster, at times, but I still love it dearly.
What is this?
Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist is an adult novel that follows Kam Suzuki, a physics major and a NASA enthusiast, as he deals with the traumatic aftereffects of his brother Vic’s mental health issues, his repressed emotions, and other problems related to mental health, all while supporting Zach Amsel, his best friend and fellow NASA enthusiast, as they begin their first year at their prestigious university.
In short: Lessons in Humanity is a novel about relationships and healing.
It’s probably my favorite work (don’t tell any of the others because they’ll be jealous) just because I’ve had it the longest. I know these characters better than I know myself some days. I’m constantly thinking about this work in particular, because I’m so attached to it.
Who are these people?
I’ll do some proper character introductions later on, but here are some rapid-fire mini intros!
Kam Suzuki (Lawful Good, ISTJ, Hufflepuff, Libra) is the protagonist, a NASA-obsessed science nerd who loves Star Trek and loves to repress his emotions.
Zach Amsel (Neutral Good, ISFJ, Ravenclaw, Aquarius) is Kam’s best friend, a high-achieving, neurotic young man who’s looking for love in all the wrong places.
Nikki Espinosa-Jasso (Lawful Neutral, INFP Gryffindor, Capricorn) is the Mom Friend of the group. She’s more than done with the boys’ bullshit, but she loves them regardless.
Kevin Espinosa (Chaotic Neutral, ESFP Slytherin, Gemini) is a fun-loving guy who really only cares about living a hedonistic lifestyle in the now.
Vic Suzuki (Neutral Good, ISTJ, Ravenclaw, Libra) is Kam’s twin brother. He’s dealing with his mental health issues and learning how to take care of himself.
Gerard Shimmish (Chaotic Good, ESFP, Gryffindor, Leo) is Vic’s long-term boyfriend and one of Kam’s closest friends. Despite his childish habits, Gerard is profound and loves caring for others.
Ruth Spencer (Lawful Good, ESFJ, Ravenclaw, Virgo) is a brilliant young woman who loves to read and always gives out good advice.
Jessica McClain (Chaotic Good, ENFP, Gryffindor, Cancer) is a naive goofball who wants to be nice to everyone.
Chai Watson (Chaotic Neutral, ESFP, Slytherin, Aries) is someone who’s been through some hard times and is slowly becoming what she hates most- her mother.
What are the jams?
My playlist for Lessons in Humanity has a lot of awesome songs on it! It’s got some decent space-themed vibes. The songs I listen to the most are:
Twin Size Mattress - The Front Bottoms
Saturn - Sleeping at Last
Hurt - Oliver Tree
Venus - Sleeping at Last
3rd Planet - Modest Mouse
Meteor Showers - Andy Kong
Morning in America - Jon Bellion
Neptune - Sleeping at Last
Stressed Out - Twenty One Pilots
Excerpt
“Xenon.” Kam straightens himself, pulling his shirt and hoodie from his chest and fixing his glasses. He doesn’t say we are noble gasses. He doesn’t say we’re both lonely, but I think that’s why we get along. He doesn’t say I wish I understood people like you do.
“Xenon,” Zach repeats, sounding like Kam. He almost reaches out to touch Kam’s face, run the backs of his fingers over Kam’s jaw. Almost. He holds himself back from the inappropriate touch that Kam won’t appreciate and clears his throat. “Did you like your ramen?”
Kam nods wordlessly.
“Good.” Zach nods. “Good.” He chews on the inside of his mouth and rubs the back of his neck. “Good,” he repeats, then shuts himself up.
Kam sits, self-contained as always. He is his own universe, detached from everything and everyone else. Maybe he isn’t krypton, but helium, unable to form any bonds, floating alone in the vast nothingness of the universe. Helium is the loneliest element.
Who’s interested?

June 10k Update!
Come one, come all, to Magno’s first 10k writing update of the month. It’s Pride, so you know what that means! I’m writing queer romance novels to keep the love going all month. (And because I think I might just need a little change from my typical faire.) I hit 10,166 words on Friday, June 7. This matters to me because I love putting the numbers down.
For this update, I’ve mostly been working on one (1) work: a romance novel between a demon hunter and one of the children of Satan who wants to fuck with him. It’s not a very original concept, but I just love the idea of lazy demons considering fucking around with humans to be “performing Satanic duties”. Yes, this is a little inspired by Good Omens (all of my demon stuff vaguely is), and also a little bit by my nostalgia for old Buzzfeed Unsolved episodes. Also a little bit by Creep Cast with Wendigoon and Meat Canyon. Basically any dynamic where it’s a mildly antagonistic friendship between two people interested in the paranormal.
That's pretty much it. I hand-wrote some Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist, but I don’t count what I write by hand unless I digitize it. This update is exclusively about DHFL.
(Demon) Hunting for Love is about Quincy, the aforementioned child of Satan, who decides he really wants to mess with this semi-viral demon hunter named Otto. Otto (accidentally) almost caught the demon Shax on camera, and Quincy thinks that he might be able to wrangle Shax into owing him a couple favors if he does this. And it’s also partially for his own amusement, since he enjoys giving humans a good scare every now and then.
Otto is also currently involved in a scandal where he and his ex-girlfriend-slash-friend Trixie were faking still being together for almost a year on their old demon-hunting channel, so there’s a little bit of controversy surrounding him at the moment. Mainly, a rumor going around that he cheated on her, which is in no way true.
This all is, as Quincy puts it, “deliciously dramatic”.
I have a WIP intro up about (Demon) Hunting for Love (shameless self-promo, ayyyy).
When it comes to romance, I’m a simple man of simple pleasures. Those pleasures, of course, being friends to lovers with a little bit of antagonism thrown in. I love friendships where half the time you’re coming up with creative insults and the other half you’re professing your undying loyalty. Double points for falling in love at the end. The spooky ambiance is just icing on that delicious, fluffy cake.
Honestly, this idea came about because I’ve been listening to a lot of CreepCast highlights. I listened to the first few episodes, but those were filmed before they began reading and critiquing the actual stories, so I found them less funny than the latest ones. Especially their hilarious meta references to in-jokes and other Creepypastas they’ve read. Their banter makes me laugh hysterically.
Also, if you’ve seen Buzzfeed Unsolved’s recent compilation of haunted houses, it’s definitely given me a lot of setting inspiration. Broken down creepy buildings are my favorite. (Can I buy and play Resident Evil 7 for this and label it a business expense on my taxes? Is that a thing I can do?)
Okay, okay, here’s the part I’m sure everyone (no one, literally no one at all wants to read these) is waiting for: the excerpts!
I’m pulling some of my personal favorites in the hope that anyone who enjoyed my WIP intro will also enjoy them. Let’s go!
Tumblr media
Otto laughs. “Have you ever seen a demon?” “No.” Quincy’s smile twists his face. “Do you think you could handle it?” “If they were real,” Quincy says, and carefully holds back his laughter. His father would probably find this just as hilarious as he does. Fucking with humans has always been a specialty of his. Quincy’s taken after him in that way, though he tends to do it in less serious and more amusing ways. Otto blinks rapidly a couple times, then sets his notes down on the coffee table and leans in closer. “Wait a minute.” “Hm?” Quincy tilts his head to the side inquisitively. “You’re saying you’ve devoted a large part of your life to something you don’t believe in?” “I believe in the study of demonology the same way I believe in the study of physics. But you can see gravity.” Quincy gestures floppily, lazily, grandly with his hand. “You can drop a pen, and there it is. Gravity. Pen’s on the ground now. Demons? How can you quantify that?”
This one was actually posted to my Instagram story (magnus_sm.writes), but what better way to immortalize it than in an update post? Quincy loves to lie about anything and everything, including believing in himself.
Tumblr media
Otto straightens the camera on its tripod. “I just can't figure out why it won't turn on.” “Have you replaced the batteries?” Quincy asks, though he knows that it's not the fault of the batteries. Sometimes electronics just can't handle being around him. Especially when they're capturing his likeness. He is also like his father in this way.  “Yeah. I put in my backup, which is fully charged, and it still won't work.” “Sorry. That’s me.” Quincy comes up to the camera and gives it a light pat. “It takes some time for electronics to like me. Dunno what it is. Maybe I’m cursed.”
Because Quincy is a little shit. He knows exactly what’s wrong, and is still cracking jokes about it just because he can.
So yeah, welcome to the first official update post for (Demon) Hunting for Love! Hope y’all’re as excited as I am for this. I’ll be tagging the people who reblogged my WIP intro, but of course, you can ask to be added to or removed from the tag list at any time. :)

Character Intro: Zach “Zamsel” Amsel
Tumblr media
Neutral Good // INFP // Ravenclaw // Aquarius // Bi // Jewish-American // Playlist // Pinterest
If there’s a character who I would award with the “Most Relatable” award, it’s Zamsel. He’s been through a lot. A hopeful romantic with a competitive streak and a massive fear of failure, Zamsel puts a lot of pressure on himself.
Backstory
Zamsel’s grown up being mostly raised by his mother, as his father has spent a lot of Zamsel’s childhood in the Air Force. Mama Amsel is a sweet, understated woman who passed a lot of her softness onto Zamsel.
Halfway through high school, Zamsel began dating his long-term girlfriend, Chai Watson. Though their relationship was initially happy, it’s deteriorated into something really toxic and draining. Nevertheless, he graduated as co-valedictorian with Kam Suzuki.
Present
Zamsel’s entering his first year of college with Kam. They’re both sort of adjusting to the freedom that comes with living several states from their families, but Zamsel is adjusting to it far better than Kam is. He’s a fan of his new life.
Playlist
Zamsel’s playlist is huge. It’s full of jams from New Medicine and The Front Bottoms, which I use to more or less build up his aesthetic and general mood.
Twin Size Mattress - The Front Bottoms
Heart With Your Name On It - New Medicine
Boy Like Me - New Medicine
Bad At Love - Halsey
Flannel - The Cardboard Swords
Called You Twice (feat. K.Flay) - FIDLAR, K.Flay
Peaches (Text Voter XX to 40649) - grandson, K.Flay
Self Esteem - The Offspring
Excerpt
Zach closes his eyes. His face is wet from crying, raw from rubbing at it, red all over. Even then, even after what’s happened, he still looks almost beautiful. There’s something about the lighting in an art museum that makes everything look like art, even raw emotion. It rounds out the patheticness of breaking down in public into something artful. Zach doesn’t look anything like a model, but he does look like art.
Aesthetic
Lying on the ground when you’re overwhelmed with emotions, mumbling the lyrics to your favorite songs under your breath to the radio, duct taping all your things together because you don’t want to buy something new, buying new sweaters from Goodwill, when a cat lays on your chest,  wearing sweaters that are too big so you can ball your hands in the fabric, people with small voices, leaning your head on someone’s shoulder while you’re talking, the feeling of slowly falling in love.

Character Intro: Gerard Shimmish
Tumblr media
Chaotic Good // ENFP // Hufflepuff // Leo // Gay // German-American // Playlist // Pinterest
Gerard Shimmish is one of those people best described as a ray of sunshine, in the least-ironic way possible. He’s such a genuinely loving and caring person that I honestly smile almost every time I write for him. Out of all the characters in Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist, Gerard is definitely the one that would win the senior superlative “Best Personality”.
Backstory
Gerard grew up in a large Catholic family in Beavercreek, Ohio (a suburb of Dayton). He was a super outgoing and sweet kid, which is how the befriended the quiet Suzuki twins. The three of them were pretty inseparable in elementary school, and, when Kam skipped fifth grade, Gerard and Vic were literally the best friends you’d always wanted to be when you were younger.
Gerard’s parents, upon discovering he was gay, kicked him out, and he’s lived with the Suzuki family for a year or so.
Present
Gerard is a senior this year, already slated to go to Ohio State University (yes, I know, the most typical college to write an Ohioan going to, but he’s one of those people who only wears red when it has an OSU logo on it) to major in psychology. He likes to say that he and Vic are “basically married” (they are) and has already begun writing his name as Gerard Suzuki-Shimmish. He’s such a freaking dork oh my gosh.
Excerpt
Gerard takes his rosary out from under his shirt, holding the crucifix in his hand before wrapping his hand up in the beads. It’s a practiced, idle motion. “Family sucks,” he says, jaded like an old man.
“Sunshine.” Vic glances at him, concern filling his very being.
“I’m good.” Gerard beams at Vic for a moment, not quite reaching his eyes or smushing up his entire face like his real smile does.
“Mm,” Vic says, unconvinced.
“It’s really okay! I’m over it.” Gerard mumbles a probably under his breath, or as under his breath as he can get, being the loud person he is. He holds his rosary with some reverence, consideration of saying a prayer.
Vic raises his eyebrow suspiciously, glancing at his phone to look at the directions. “If you say so.”
Gerard disentangles the rosary from his hand to stare at the crucifix. “I’m just working through it. It’s hard, but… I’m dealing with it. One day at a time.”
Playlist
Gerard’s playlist is one that I try to keep upbeat, due to his character. It’s sort of a mess, and it definitely needs to be cleaned up and revamped, but these are the songs that sort of really capture at least a part of Gerard’s character.
Sun - Sleeping At Last
Cry Baby - Melanie Martinez
Youth - Glass Animals
Saturn - Sleeping At Last
I Have Friends in Holy Spaces - Panic! at the Disco
Life Itself - Glass Animals
When the Day Met the Night - Panic! at the Disco
Aesthetic
Singing loudly and off-key to your favorite songs, cuddling with your friends, that one kid who has no volume control, old guys on radio talk shows, burn scars from touching something hot on accident, people who say they’re “fun sized” instead of short, rewatching your favorite movie for the hundredth time, writing things on your hand because it's the closest thing, cry-laughing at your own jokes, consuming your body weight in sugar on a daily basis,  teasing your friends about things that happened years ago, the feeling of belonging you get when you’re with your friends, being so full of love it shines from you like sunlight.

Character Intro: Nikki Espinosa-Jasso
Tumblr media
Lawful Neutral // ESTJ // Gryffindor // Capricorn // Bi? // Mexican-American // Pinterest // Playlist
Nikki is actually a relatively new character! I created her in... late 2018, I think (?), which makes her one of the newest characters in all of Lessons in Humanity from a Future Physicist. She’s definitely one of the most steadfast, stubborn people in Lessons in Humanity. She’s part of the only reason Kam ever goes out of the library/his dorm, which is an amazing act. Props to this amazing woman for doing such superhuman feats. (Also she’s that bitch and I love her for it.)
Backstory
Nikki grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, where she was raised closely with her cousins (including Kevin). She’s had a pretty typical, boring life, including a couple heartbreaks that have made her a little cynical about love (for herself-- she very much believes in love for other people). She had a pet guinea pig named Penny as a child and a love for guinea pigs that continues to this day. (Not relevant to the plot, but I think you should know this.)
She bought her car, The Spagon Wagon, for $2,000 off the side of the road. He’s a Mercury Grand Marquis, and she works on him every weekend.
Present
Nikki’s attending Auburn University for engineering, minoring in *checks notes* being a good friend. She’s just a good person, honestly. A little like Gerard in how much she loves and cares about her friends, but she’s full of a lot of sarcasm, sass, and wise (and often cynical) advice given over McDonald’s french fries. Lots of Older Sister energy.
Excerpt
Kam looks from the window to Nikki. She kind of looks like Zach, if he squints. Shoulder-length hair in frizzy curls, except hers is a little straighter, like she messes with it more often than he does, brown eyes that catch everything, band march across her chest. The light hits her as the sun dips lower into the sky, making the purple marks under her eyes fade and her sharp angles look softer. He thinks she could be beautiful.
Playlist
Nikki’s playlist has been pretty hard to make, and is still a serious work-in-progress, but a big thanks goes to Abby for supplying me with some amazing songs!
One - Kerli
I’m In Love With My Car - Queen
She - Laura Mvula
Come As You Are - Nirvana
Tomboy - Princess Nokia
Kombucha - Winnetka Bowling League
Aesthetic
Wearing a jean jacket over a hoodie, a four-step skincare routine, being in love with your car, peach Snapple, falling asleep in a Taco Bell lobby after eating several Quesaritos, the chaos of being the eldest daughter in a family, checkered Vans, always carrying a metal straw on your person and forgetting to use it, cucumber-scented lotion, graph paper, the power of a good roast, that feeling you get after a successful all-nighter, working on your car on the weekends, teasing your friends.
