Here are my two versions of “Spiritus,” inspired by the art and music of Hildegard von Bingen. The center design is based on one of her visions that appears in her work called Scivias. I included her musical notation at the top and bottom, as well as a few notes hidden within the paper as watermarks. Although her original artwork was probably painted on parchment (animal skin), my pulp painted version is created using hemp paper. Lili Boulanger is quite the legend. This amazing young woman accomplished a lot, especially taking into consideration her very poor health which led to her death at 24. She was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome at the beginning of the 20th century. With her undeniably impressive work Faust et Helene.

Stumbling upon her piece for solo piano 'D'un Jardin Clair' the piece immediately made a big impression on pianist Daria van den Bercken. It is believed the piece is inspired by the garden from her childhood. She composed the piece during her stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, where she got to stay and work after winning the Prix de Rome.

You guys! I’m so excited that one of the pieces for my #operaproject is actually complete!!! (It pretty much just wrote itself, which is really rare for me.) And this tune has been so stuck in my head these past several days…it just won’t let me go! 🥰

I’ve adapted the 1851 speech #SojournerTruth gave to the Women’s Rights Convention in Ohio, and turned it into a sultry, snarky, #jazzy #solo for #alto with #piano #bass #violin #cello and #clarinet !!! (See one of my favorite lines from her speech on the second photo…) 😂

Alicia Adélaide Needham (born Alicia Montgomery on October 31, 1863) was an Irish composer and the first woman to conduct at the Royal Albert Hall in London. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduated in 1887. Her husband, physician Joseph Needham, took an active role in Alicia's musical pursuits by organizing concerts and arranging publications. She wrote over 700 compositions. In 1906 she was appointed President of the National Eisteddfod of Whales, the first woman to hold the title. Shortly thereafter she was made a "Bardess of Wales" under the title "Harp of Ireland." Her productivity ceased in 1920, around the time of her husband's death. Needham's work went largely unnoticed after her death on Christmas Eve of 1945 until her son Joseph, growing in fame as a scientist, uncovered her writings and helped get them archived at the University of Bath and later Cambridge. #ukulele #womencomposers #womenshistorymonth #aliciaadélaideneedham #ukulelesunday
