Happy International Women’s Day!

From 1894 to 1915, Miss Kitty Lord graced international stages with her singing burlesque acts. She performed in theater programs at the major music halls of London and toured extensively to Paris, Naples, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo—to name a few cities—becoming an international “eccentric star.” The postcards seen here date from her tours to Cairo, Egypt, where she performed at the Théâtre des Nouveautés du Caire (later called the Folies-Murger from 1911 onwards). Most are addressed either to her stage address or her personal residence in the rapidly developing theatre district of Azbakiyya.

Lord was a pioneer female performer abroad, fashioning a life on her own terms. Through her postcard correspondence, we can catch a glimpse of her affairs with a few of her admirers.

Floral Feels from Amy Puryear’s Stage Style Spotlight. I love that when she performed with Laila Belle at GrassRoots she wore florals for both of her performances. These outfits are great examples of how you can get entirely different vibes from floral prints. The turquoise pants have large, high contrasting colored, kind of bubbly flowers. The size of the flowers in vibrant jewel tones makes this a really fun, summery print. The red jumper has such a lovely cut that’s hard see in photos - wide legged pants with slits up the front of the leg. @amy_bountiful_beauty wore the red floral jumper for @lailabelle_band’s Sunday show at @fingerlakesgrassrootsfest last month and this floral had an entirely different feel all together. A nearly monochromatic palette, medium sized flowers that were a little angular and more realistic gave this piece more of a classically elegant look - still in a bold color keeping it fun and festive. Amy’s stage style embodied the vibe of the performances and the parts of the festival Laila Belle performed during. High energy kicking off the beginning of the festival in bright and fun floral and classy and a little more subdued as the event wrapped up in a rich natural floral. In honor of World Theatre Day, we present fabulous Miss Kitty Lord.

Miss Kitty Lord graced international stages with her singing burlesque acts from 1894 to 1915. She performed in theater programs at the major music halls of London and toured extensively to Paris, Naples, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo—to name a few cities—becoming an international “eccentric star.” The postcards seen here date from her tours to Cairo, Egypt, where she performed at the Théâtre des Nouveautés du Caire (later called the Folies-Murger, 1911 onwards). Most are addressed either to her stage address or her personal residence in the rapidly developing theatre district of Azbakiyya.

Kitty Lord’s postcards offer a unique micro-history of Egypt during this period, and they also act as what we know now as social media. Postcards played a critical role of transmitting “what’s happening” around the world.

At one level, the collection illustrates Kitty’s experiences as a foreign female performing abroad, shedding light on her theatrical audiences in Egypt and her affair with an Egyptian architect. From an art historical perspective, it invites us to explore the belle-époque architecture of Egypt’s urban centers, historical tourism of its ancient and Islamic sites, as well as the imagery of ethnography.

Miss Kitty Lord was a pioneer female performer abroad, creating life on her own term, as you might get a glimpse of her affairs with a few of her admirers from these postcard correspondences. Brave and graceful, Miss Kitty Lord would’ve been a phenomenon if people back then had a smartphone.

Amy Puryear’s Stage Style Spotlight is up! Laila Belle’s leading lady wore two different floral outfits at their two shows at @fingerlakesgrassrootsfest last month. I love how different they each are and will share more about floral feels and how they translate inspired by @amy_bountiful_beauty and @lailabelle_band. Amy said, “I feel like our clothes are such an expression of ourselves, it's an art form really - to find what fits our mood and ourselves on any given day. I was so thankful to have these wonderful outfits, that have brought joy and love in the past, and were just right to bring it again in a whole new way at the 30th Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance!” An art form indeed!
