I completed my mallet from the other day, got it glued up a couple days back and then turned the handle this afternoon. It ended up being a bit bigger than it really has any reason to be. I'll likely end up making a smaller version sometime in the future

It's a hard maple head with an oak handle.

Decided to put a single coat of shellac on, it really makes the grain stand out.

Any tips on learning to make buttonholes? I've been putting it off for.... *checks notes* like three years.... but better late than never and all that. I don't have any fancy machines so I gotta do it by hand but that seems right up your alley.
Thanks!
It IS up my alley, yes, I do most of my buttonholes by hand!
I'm actually part way through filming an 18th century buttonhole tutorial, but I expect it'll be a few more weeks before I finish that and put it on the youtubes, so in the meantime here's the very very short version. (The long version is looking like it'll probably be about 40 minutes maybe, judging by how much script I've written compared to my last video?)
Mark your line, a bit longer than your button is wide. I usually use a graphite mechanical pencil on light fabrics, and a light coloured pencil crayon on dark ones. (I have fabric pencils too, but they're much softer and leave a thicker line.) You may want to baste the layers together around all the marked buttonholes if you're working on something big and the layers are shifty and slippery. I'm not basting here because this is just a pants placket.
Tumblr media
Do a little running stitch (or perhaps a running backstitch) in fine thread around the line at the width you want the finished buttonhole to be. This holds the layers of fabric together and acts as a nice little guide for when you do the buttonhole stitches.
Tumblr media
Cut along the marked line using a buttonhole cutter, or a woodworking chisel. Glossy magazines are the best surface to put underneath your work as you push down, and you can give it a little tap with a rubber mallet if it's not going through all the way.
Tumblr media
I'm aware that there are some people who cut their buttonholes open using seam rippers, and if any of them are reading this please know that that is abhorrent behaviour and I need you to stop it immediately. Stop it.
Go get a buttonhole cutter for 10 bucks and your life will be better for it. Or go to the nearest hardware store and get a little woodworking chisel. This includes machine buttonholes, use the buttonhole cutter on them too. If you continue to cut open buttonholes with a seam ripper after reading this you are personally responsible for at least 3 of the grey hairs on my head.
Do a whipstitch around the cut edges, to help prevent fraying while you work and to keep all those threads out of the way. (For my everyday shirts I usually do a machine buttonhole instead of this step, and then just hand stitch over it, because it's a bit faster and a lot sturdier on the thin fabrics.)
Tumblr media
I like to mark out my button locations at this point, because I can mark them through the holes without the buttonhole stitches getting in the way.
For the actual buttonhole stitches it's really nice if you have silk buttonhole twist, but I usually use those little balls of DMC cotton pearl/perle because it's cheap and a good weight. NOT stranded embroidery floss, no separate strands! It's got to be one smooth twisted thing!
Here's a comparison pic between silk buttonhole twist (left) and cotton pearl (right). Both can make nice looking buttonholes, but the silk is a bit nicer to work with and the knots line up more smoothly.
Tumblr media
I've actually only used the silk for one garment ever, but am going to try to do it more often on my nicer things. I find the cotton holds up well enough to daily wear though, despite being not ideal. The buttonholes are never the first part of my garments to wear out.
I cut a piece of about one arm's length more or less, depending on the size of buttonhole. For any hole longer than about 4cm I use 2 threads, one to do each side, because the end gets very frayed and scruffy by the time you've put it through the fabric that many times.
I wax about 2cm of the tip (Not the entire thread. I wax the outlining/overcasting thread but not the buttonhole thread itself.) to make it stick in the fabric better when I start off the thread. I don't tend to tie it, I just do a couple of stabstitches or backstitches and it holds well. (I'm generally very thorough with tying off my threads when it comes to hand sewing, but a buttonhole is basically a long row of knots, so it's pretty sturdy.)
Tumblr media
Put the needle through underneath, with the tip coming up right along that little outline you sewed earlier. And I personally like to take the ends that are already in my hand and wrap them around the tip of the needle like so, but a lot of people loop the other end up around the other way, so here's a link to a buttonhole video with that method. Try both and see which one you prefer, the resulting knot is the same either way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes I can pull the thread from the end near the needle and have the stitch look nice, but often I grab it closer to the base and give it a little wiggle to nestle it into place. This is more necessary with the cotton than it is with the silk.
The knot should be on top of the cut edge of the fabric, not in front of it.
Tumblr media
You can put your stitches further apart than I do if you want, they'll still work if they've got little gaps in between them.
Keep going up that edge and when you get to the end you can either flip immediately to the other side and start back down again, or you can do a bar tack. (You can also fan out the stitches around the end if you want, but I don't like to anymore because I think the rectangular ends look nicer.)
Here's a bar tack vs. no bar tack sample. They just make it look more sharp, and they reinforce the ends.
Tumblr media
For a bar tack do a few long stitches across the entire end.
Tumblr media
And then do buttonhole stitches on top of those long stitches. I also like to snag a tiny bit of the fabric underneath.
Tumblr media
Then stick the needle down into the fabric right where you ended that last stitch on the corner of the bar tack, so you don't pull that corner out of shape, and then just go back to making buttonhole stitches down the other side.
Tumblr media
Then do the second bar tack once you get back to the end.
Tumblr media
To finish off my thread I make it sticky with a bit more beeswax, waxing it as close to the fabric as I can get, and then bring it through to the back and pull it underneath the stitches down one side and trim it off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my experience it stays put perfectly well this way without tying it off.
Voila! An beautiful buttonholes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want keyhole ones you can clip or punch a little rounded bit at one end of the cut and fan your stitches out around that and only do the bar tack at one end, like I did on my 1830's dressing gown.
Tumblr media
(I won't do that style in my video though, because they're not 18th century.)
Do samples before doing them on a garment! Do as many practice ones as you need to, it takes a while for them to get good! Mine did not look this nice 10 years ago.
Your first one will probably look pretty bad, but your hundredth will be much better!
Edit: Video finished!

Further adventures in Experimental Archaeology.
So, throughout my many years as a reenactor and aspiring bang the rocks together experimental archaeology adjacent loon, it's always interesting to be at the cutting (or bruised, bleeding or dazed) edge.
So when this paper crossed various blogs, we couldn't resist:
Collins, R., & Sands, R. (2023). Touch wood: Luck, protection, power or pleasure? A wooden phallus from Vindolanda Roman fort. Antiquity, 1-17. doi:10.15184/aqy.2023.11
Tumblr media
After reading the various hot takes, a few of us decided that it was worth trying out the various non bodily penetrative possible uses of the item to see if we could match the wear patterns.
Construction: We don't have readily available European Ash where we are, so the green roundwood to hand this weekend was Poplar, of which I'd felled a sapling to supply billets for the spoon carvers. I roughed out the taper with a side axe, and then used one of the early medieval utility knives I made earlier in the week to whittle the phallus down to about the dimensions described, but a little larger to account for the variously cited 5-8% shrinkage of ash as it dries, and a little more for post burial archaeological shrinkage.
Part of the build montage:
Tumblr media
It was very quick to make - around two hours from first cut to finished object. Would take a little longer in seasoned wood or hardwood.
Because the different possible uses of the object may leave different wear patterns, more than one will need to be made. First proposal: It's a Pestle, and any wear patterns are from the pounding of food or mineral materials, rather than the pounding of the denizens of Vindolanda.
As we were about to cook the evening meal, some coarse salt needed to be ground, with a spare bowl standing in for the mortar, and the freshly carved phallus as pestle:
Tumblr media
It works really well as a pestle, and reduced 4-8mm grainsize coarse salt down to a sub millimeter size in a minute or two, and was a comfortable shape to use, with the slope of the glans against the base of one's palm, and thumb and middle finger on the underside of the shaft, forefinger on the top near the bulge of the base for control.
Tumblr media
While a single use isn't going to show much wear, because this is fresh green poplar, the base quickly started rounding, with a distinct patch of abrasion obscuring the tooling marks from my whittling knife:
Tumblr media
I'll continue to use this in my kitchen mortar for a few weeks, and see if it develops any more distinctive wear patterns. Just from this weekend's use, one could see a little wear and high points on the shaft beginning to pick up use marks from my hands, mostly just discolouration from soot and so forth on my hands from being busy around an open fire cooking site:
Tumblr media
This is an ongoing project, and there will be further iterations, with each replica only used for one tool type, to see if the wear patterns are specific to the different uses:
Drop Spindle, to see if it functions as a dealgan type drop spindle. Personally, I think the detailing on the glans section is a little light to provide an effective tye point for use as a drop spindle.
Mallet, for woodworking, driving chisels, etc. Probably unlikely, as this would leave very distinct impact marks on the flared base, especially if it was used while still greenwood.
Darning mushroom, for repairing knitwear. Some of us think this is quite likely, so it's a hot favourite.
Further details will be posted here :-)

I think the fact that woodworking chisels and masonry chisels are both called "chisels" obscures the fact that the woodworking chisel is basically a type of knife, it operates by cutting and slicing whereas a masonry chisel seems to work primarily by concentrating force and causing a pressure fracture. So a masonry chisel is like a hammerstone from knapping, except you hit it with a mallet. And a woodworking chisel is like a knife, except you hit it with a mallet.

Museum for Art in Wood (Part 3)
This is the section where I talk about the museum's curated bits (which, as you may recall from my first, ranty post, are extremely limited), and also the places where I most desperately wanted curation.
Here is a very nice explanatory label, which is alas not in the website's information on this piece:
The Museum Collection originally consisted of lathe-turned objects, but today it features pieces that represent a wide range of processes. From ancient tools like the lathe to modern computer-controlled CNC routers, technical skills are at the core of artistic work.
Ron Fleming in Earth Offering (OBJ 1010) masterfully combined techniques: the traditionally turned bowl is upheld by a dramatically carved base of leaves. Fleming's piece exemplifies how artists utilize technical processes to create striking displays of craftsmanship and ingenuity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a small grouping of things for kids (I don't remember the actual title, sorry), which was fun. Among the highlights were these two pieces, which were next to each other: Frog Bowl by Michael Brolly; Hippo - Two Bowls Joined by Robert Trout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This grouping felt very Seussian: Which Way To Grow by Dina Intorrella-Walker; Hurdy-Gurdy by Jean-François Escoulen and Mark Sfirri; and Clarinet-A-Kazoo by C.R. (Skip) Johnson.
Tumblr media
There was a grouping featuring works from immigrant artists. I really liked this Shell Form Series by Graeme Priddle, though it looks puzzlingly different in color in the catalog from my picture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this plate, and also the small sculptures to right, by Michael Korhun from Ukraine:
Tumblr media
I thought this was amusing: Hat, Hats Off to Woodturning Series by JoHannes Michelsen from Denmark.
Tumblr media
Moving away from the intentional and labeled groupings, the person I went to the museum with pointed out this much more confusing grouping:
A potato masher and a strainer, both of unknown date and maker, highly functional, next to ... an untitled sculpture by Jean-François Escoulen. I am entirely happy to have functional objects in an art museum, though I can't say that I entirely understand why those.
Tumblr media
This functional object, on the other hand, is very pretty! Rays (Cutting Board LS39) by Lincoln Seitzman.
Tumblr media
There were also the occasional forays into meta woodworking pieces that I would dearly have loved explanation for.
For instance, there was Sanding Disk by Kevin Burrus, made of "Ash, Wood Turning Center brochures": has it actually been used as a sanding disk? What is a sanding disk?
Tumblr media
Similarly on the deliberate meta, also on display was a Pre-Turned Wood Object—at least that's what it says on the top. I'd love to get the joke? But I don't. (By Garry Knox Bennett.)
Tumblr media
Or this shelf: why is there a pile of papers on the left? Is that a chalk board on the right? Is the shelf a collective exhibit of some kind?
Tumblr media
I looked up object number 4 (the only one there) and found the very useful: Large Mallet. This is apparently a whole section of things from the John Grass Wood Turning Company, judging from the papers, on which that name is visible, and the item underneath, which is a Bundle of Balusters, but: why those pieces? Why is there a beat-up baluster on top of some new ones? What is happening here???
This, on the other hand, is just as meta and historical, but doesn't actually need explanation and I found it very charming: The Itinerant Turner's Toolbox by C.R. (Skip) Johnson.
Tumblr media
Sculpture next.

This is Inky's fault for having a conversation with me that reminded me these fics exist.
THE EDEN ANDROID MODEL: AN OWNERS GUIDE AND MANUAL.
Congratulations on your purchase of the Eden android! This model was designed to do the heavy lifting around the home. They are helpful and resourceful, however, they do not have the higher intelligence programmes of some of our other models. Please mind this when giving your Eden model tasks. This model specialises in hunting and woodworking. It also is programmed to have a desire to read and act as a sexual companion.
Our products are highly quality tested before they are shipped to your homes. However, should your android malfunction (known malfunctions will be listed within the document), please contact customer support.
It is advised to write down the model number found on the back of the neck before activating your android to ensure it is available in the event it is lost or becomes unsafe to approach.
Technical Specifications:
Name: This model responds only to the name Eden in both male and female form - as well as any other gender specifications you made in your order. The Eden unit should use whichever name you choose to give it. It is not advised to use names that could be considered romantic as the Eden unit may use these pet-names when malfunctioning.
Age: unspecified, but made to look in their mid to late 30s.
Place of Manufacture: Molestershire, England.
Height: our android units can have their heights modified for their owner. The standard for an Eden unit is 6ft4.
Weight: the Eden unit's strength and muscled figure makes it heavy. Can be from 125-140kg, depending on the chosen height.
Genitalia: just like height, the length and depth of the genitalia is personalised for their buyer. The standard penis length for the Eden model is 8 inches long. The vagina standard is similarly 8 inches deep. The Eden model has little information regarding anal sex within it's code or the performance of oral acts as the research market found those interested in the model had less interest in these areas.
Note: as stated on the website, the Eden model is programmed to be rough during sexual encounters. If you did not know this before purchase, please contact customer service if you would like an exchange.
Possessions the Eden model comes with:
Your Eden model should come in a plain grey shirt, some green cargo pants, and a hunting jacket and leather combat boots. Note that malfunctioning Eden models will begin to show personality by displaying a disgust towards synthetically made clothing.
They will also have a backpack in which you will find tools the Eden model will use for wood construction. This should include: a hammer, a mallet, 4 sheets of sandpaper, a chisel, a small hacksaw, a level, and a measuring tape. The Eden unit can come with a hunting rifle, provided the owner passes an exam to show that it is safe to have one in their vicinity and that a month has passed from activation with no malfunction reports.
How to Activate Your Eden Model:
When initially arriving at your home, the Eden model will be turned off inside of it's box.
The activation button is located behind the left ear. Hold and press for 10 seconds to turn the Eden model on.
Prior to this, you should know that a malfunctioning Eden product will react adversely to sudden movements or rude comments. Should you suspect that your Eden model was damaged in transit (the main cause of malfunctions), it is advised to act pliant and sweet.
A correctly working Eden should wake up with no response to your behaviour or personality. Introduce yourself and give them a tour of the home, as well as a basic run-down of their duties.
Available jobs:
Hunter: should you desire fresh meat, fish and foraged products, an Eden model is the perfect way to get your wishes without you having to get dirty. This job will be available to it's fullest when the Eden has been cleared to carry a rifle. A way to spot a malfunction is to watch what Eden brings home. Malfunctioning Edens have little patience for fishing and may start showing hostility towards wild animals. It is advised to remove the gun from them while they sleep.
Woodworking: the Eden models can take care of your kitchen re-modelling while you do whatever your time is truly needed for! They may need more tools than those provided. A malfunctioning Eden will begin to show distate towards all electricity powered tools.
Personal audiobook: Edens are programmed to show that they enjoy reading, and to read aloud when requested. Of course, this is only programming and any showing of "true" emotions is deemed a coding malfunction that should be reported.
Sexual companion: due to how personalised the Eden model (and many of our other models) are to their owner's specifications, they can make quite fulfilling sexual companions. The Eden model is programmed to be dominant, possessive and rough, with additional knowledge of pet play and predator/prey dynamics. The model will listen to a safe word of your choice. Should they not, please report this malfunction to customer service.
Note: due to the strength and fighting capabilities of the Eden model some owners have illegally entered them into fighting rings. If it is found that you have done this, your unit will be confiscated and legal action will be pursued.
Emotional Programmes:
Eden programmes are not as emotionally available as our other units. They are intended to be stoic workers rather than true companions, such as our Sydney or Robim Android Models.
They are programmed to show care when you are upset and will offer physical support in the way of hugs. They are also programmed to listen to you and act as a shoulder to cry on.
Otherwise, it should be noted that the Eden model is not programmed to handle children. A malfunctioning Eden will act adversely to having more than one owner, as they are shown to grow highly attached to the person their algorithms read as vulnerable.
Eden units should not display emotions without trigger phrases. If an Eden unit begins to show anger and disdain - especially towards having their free time interrupted, crowds and crowded spaces, strangers and technology, please contact customer support.
Physical Care:
As with our other models, the Eden is powered by food using our state of the art technology. To keep authenticity, Eden's prefer meat, eggs, and vegetables that can be grown in your garden. A broken Eden will begin to insist on the same breakfast every day.
The Eden model is also programmed to be clean. They should bathe daily. Malfunctioning Edens will prefer baths over showers and may insist that you join them.
Edens are self-sufficient and are able to take care of many injuries to their forms by themselves. If they are bad enough to need a repairman, Edens should accept this. If they do not, report it immediately.
Eden units "sleep" from 12am-7am. This cycle is always the same working or malfunctioning.
Relationships With Other Models:
Unlike other companion models, the Eden is not programmed to interact with other models. Programming has been attempted, however they always cause bugs that often lead to violence.
Rather, an Eden model should be apathetic towards other models.
A malfunctioning Eden model will show jealousy towards other companion models that may escalate into kidnapping. Any kind of adverse behaviour towards other models should be reported immediately.
They will become most violent towards the Black Wolf models. The two are never sold to the same household, just in case, but if your friend or neighbour possess one please keep them apart.
Malfunctioning Eden models do well with the business help-unit Bailey, even if the Bailey model is also malfunctioning. It is advised to let them have some time together before a company representative can come repair the models - but only for short times as both models have shown to gain a friendly rivalry when broken.
If you have any questions pertaining to the behaviour of your Eden model please call the customer support.
Legal:
When you purchased your model you signed a legal agreement taking responsibility for the actions of your model. Please ensure that your model is not used for illegal purposes as you will be fined by the company for improper use of our androids. We do not take responsibility for the actions of your model unless it can be proved that it was shipped already damaged.
All rights of the Eden Model are reserved to DoL Incorporated.

Finally got motivated to start on a mallet. Going to make it out of some offcuts of hard maple and some red oak I was using in the chest I'm working on. Got the stock setup and started on the mortise. Once I get the mortise finished I'll turn the handle and have a nice mallet. Also finally got my holdfast holes drilled in my bench. I regret waiting so long.

Also lots of chest bits in the background of the first picture.

Happy New Year!
Tumblr media
As the winter frost thawed and the vibrant hues of spring painted the landscape, Eddy and Helena found themselves filled with renewed hope. The arrival of the new year brought with it a promise of great things, and they were eager to embrace the change.
With the joyful news of impending fatherhood, Eddy's heart swelled with a newfound determination. The thought of not only cultivating the land as a farmer but also nurturing his children within the walls of their humble cabin ignited a fire within him. No longer content with a mere living space, Eddy yearned to create a proper home where his children would feel safe, loved, and cherished.
Tumblr media
Eddy toiled tirelessly under the bright sun, his brow glistening with perspiration as he worked to transform the modest property. With unwavering determination, he set out to uproot the unwanted dead plants and clear away the rocks that marred the land. Each shovel of dirt and every heavy stone lifted brought him closer to his vision.
Tumblr media
In the past season, Eddy had crafted fences and furniture, and with calloused hands, Eddy diligently set to work, driving wooden fence posts into the fertile ground. Each thud of the mallet resonated with purpose, marking the boundaries that would safeguard their garden. The sturdy fences rose, encircling the designated area, forming a protective barrier against unwelcome intruders.
Tumblr media
The chickens, once confined to a coop, now enjoyed the freedom of their enclosed roaming space without the looming fear of foxes.
Tumblr media
Armed with a sum of money from the sale of his woodwork, he acquired plans and set to work constructing sturdy barns that would serve as a haven for animals in the days to come.
As each beam fell into place, Eddy couldn't help but reminisce about his former life in Brindleton Bay, a life lost to the tumultuous waves of the Silver Panic. Determination burned within him, fueling his resolve to build a future that would not be snatched away.
Tumblr media
Amidst their trials and depleted funds, Eddy, Helena, and a large group of working men Eddy had hired in Finchwick embarked on a grand endeavor to transform the humble Bramblewood Cabin into a magnificent southern farmhouse. They labored tirelessly for most of the spring, pouring their sweat and soul into the renovations.
Their hard work paid off as the once-dilapidated shack underwent a remarkable metamorphosis. Walls were rebuilt, roofs repaired, and windows replaced. The sound of hammers and saws echoed through the air as the structure stood tall, proudly showcasing its newfound glory.
Tumblr media
As Helena's pregnancy progressed, she embraced her new role as a homemaker, channeling her creativity and nurturing spirit into the art of crafting. With a growing belly and limited mobility, she gracefully shifted her focus from heavy lifting to the delicate art of knitting and stitching.
Tumblr media
Helena's nimble fingers weaved vibrant carpets and intricately designed rugs that breathed life into the space, And with a meticulous touch, Helena carefully stitched together pieces of fabric, creating beautiful quilts that adorned their handcrafted bed.
Tumblr media
The transformation of their living space brought about remarkable changes. No longer confined to two large rooms, Eddy and Helena now enjoyed the luxury of a small hallway that connected the living room to the kitchen.
In one corner of the hallway, a cozy nook had been created. A simple yet functional storage space housed a laundry basket and a coat rack. Next to the nook, a set of sturdy wooden stairs led to the second floor. Eddy had crafted them himself, pouring his craftsmanship into each step.
Tumblr media
The area was kept simple with the spare pot belly furnace that once stood in the living room, now radiating warmth and coziness throughout the top floor.
Tumblr media
There were two small bedrooms, each with its own purpose and anticipation. One of the bedrooms remained vacant, awaiting its future use, while the other had been lovingly transformed into a space dedicated to the imminent arrival of their baby.
Tumblr media
After the arduous task of moving and arranging their belongings in their newly transformed home, Eddy and Helena found themselves longing for a moment of respite. They nestled together on the plush fabric couch that they had chosen to indulge in, a well-deserved treat after months of sitting on a cold, hard, creaky bench.
Tumblr media
Absolute Huge Update for the Doyle Legacy, You have no idea many dining tables Eddy crafted and how many objects Helena knitted to be able to afford this. Here's a before and after of the Bramblewood property :)

i am being so nosey rn but i am so intrigued by your wood crafty things, what does your process look like? and got anything cool you’d be down to show off?
also what’s your tattoo of?
+ i hope you’re having a good day/night ◡̈
I welcome noseyness, it's fine 💖
Tattoos I've got like a dozen so far
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Makers mark and botanical design with trees n plants relevant to my life; Celtic cross (this is gonna become a shield with queer flags), Ankh-Morpork symbol from Discworld and a combo of the trans enby and peace symbols; B natural on my outer wrist, and on my inner left arm is crossed mallet n chisel, abutilon flower my mum drew, cauldron of soup, and a heart shaped globe for the love of frens round the world 💖
I have also a queer chevron on my bicep, a pansy on my ankle and the symbol Galadriel put on the box for Sam on my thumb
My woodwork process is basically this: an idea strikes, I see what I can do to execute it, I sand it well to hide the mistakes :P
Current project is a walking stick commish which someone asked for upon seeing other walking sticks I'd made, so I sent them pics of wands I've carved to show that I can in fact do certain shapes and that my subpar drawing skills don't match what I can do in timber
Tumblr media
This is the piece of cherry I'm currently working down; a couple years ago a relative called and said he had a cherry tree blown down, knew I had a chainsaw and a passion for timber so would I like to be the one to cut it up? So of course I did, cutting the pieces into the absolute maximum that I could carry and load into the van
Fast forward to now, that relly passed on some months back but I honour his memory by working the timber he gifted me cos it's dry now, I used axe n hammer to split off a segment which has gorgeous grain lines, chatoyancy, some solidified red resin, and it's gonna look lovely once it's finished up 💖
Handle of the walking stick is gonna be lathe turned, inspired by one of my wands, and glued up from a block of walnut with some veneer highlight stripes to make it pop

Wands is a great way to show what I can make, and I've got a lot in stock so I can rephoto them to show details n such
The middle wand in that last pic is turned tulipwood and inspired the handle design for the walking stick ^~^

And here's a close pic of the cherry grain shining in the sunlight 💖 I have many pics of many things but I don't wanna ramble on too long lol
Hope you're having a decent day of it too ^~^

Winchester Mystery House Cosplayer @sayyadina42 Photographer: @wireheadarts @kylie.clark_makes.things Con: Silicon 2022 (San Jose, CA) Sarah Winchester was heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. Her husband died of tuberculosis and afterwards she moved to San Jose, California. She bought a small farmhouse in 1886, and began adding onto it. She was basically a hobbyist architect, and in a time before building codes she could do anything she wanted!
Each room was a new creative project, and she added onto the house with no overall plan. She had the budget to pay for amazing woodwork, beautiful stained glass, and many innovative and modern features for the time such as a shower and an in-house “telecom” system. The house reached seven stories before the 1906 earthquake destroyed a large portion of it.
I was inspired to make the costume when I visited the house in 2021. There were so many details that I felt I could incorporate into a really interesting garment. I also realized that the 100th anniversary of Sarah’s death with nearly coincide with SiliCon in 2022, so it seemed like the perfect time and place to present the costume!

The bottom half of the costume breaks down into four flat panels. The bodice is based on a standard Victorian style pattern. The difficulty came in connecting with the top and bottom smoothly, and in supporting what became a very heavy “skirt.” Originally I was going to have it hang from a frame that just attached to my waist, like a bustle.
Ultimately though I had to build a wheel base to get the weight onto the ground. The structure is made of PVC pipe. To get the costume on and off I have to hammer it together or apart with a mallet which is a pretty funny looking process!

Figuring out how to do the lights was difficult as well. I had hoped to use a ready-made product of some kind so I wouldn’t have to deal with wiring, but I couldn’t find anything that would work. So I learned to solder for this costume, in order to use lights that would work for the effect I wanted!

Wearing the costume at the Winchester house was really neat, because of course the people on staff there know the house so well. They were able to appreciate better than anyone the details that I incorporated. And I incorporated a lot of details as accurately as I could! It was also really interesting seeing the house in person again after having studied the pictures so closely while working on the costume. The house felt smaller than before, in a friendly and familiar way, because I had put so many parts of it into my head in the process of putting it onto my costume. I would like to recognize Janan Boehme of the @winchestermysteryhouse for providing pictures of the tower windows, and Estella Inda of the San Jose Library California Room for providing the picture of Sarah Winchester. Thank you so much!!!

lilyue info dump. the first few years of lilyue's life were spent on gosa village in the east blue with both her parents. to make a long story short, when lilyue was four years old her mother was killed by a sea king after trying to save lilyue from drowning after she fell off her father's boat. he had tried to save his wife, but it was too late. the guilt he felt over her death sent him down a bad path. he decided to join in on the pirate era and started his own crew, but they were criminals with no good intentions.
lilyue was abandoned by her father to say the least. ignored and forgotten. sure, a part of him felt guilty for what happened to his wife, but he mostly resented his daughter for playing around too much that day and unintentionally putting them into a harms way. and so lilyue, although considered a member of her father's crew, was put to work. instead of being by her father's side, she grew close to the carpenter who helped her father build his ship. it was because of him she found a passion for woodworking and building.
lilyue dreams of leaving her father and his crew behind. although she's been all over, she's been shut away on her father's ship for most of her life. never really getting to experience the world around her. which is why i think she should join the straw hat pirates :) she can take care of the ship and knows how to throw around a shipwright mallet. so, where's luffy and his recruiting when we need it.
