WORKSHOP7 25th of November- Camera Work and Lighting
Week 25th- 29th of November
Today I did the camera work and lighting for art and design workshop.
This workshop introduced me to the techniques available to light an in camera image in a studio setting.
We started off by just taking like a passport photo, we then took a photo with the head to the side and then we took a photo with a different colour of light.

Workshop7. Nick - Physical Studio: Self Annhilation, Death, Resurrection
I personally found this workshop challenging as portraiture (and drawing myself in particular) is something I have never been good at or had interest in trying to take further. Having said this I also found this workshop effective as we created many interesting looks and patterns with a single image.
I particularly enjoyed recreating the image we created when scanning in our faces as I found my outcome effective due to the shapes created when I cut around the shapes/ flow of the image.

Workshop 7 - Montage Editing
&
Workshop 8 - Compression (full quality)
Lossless; Quicktime TIFF LZW (10/10)
For the lossless compression I have deemed the ‘Quicktime TIFF LZW’ the most efficient file format due to a number of factors. Considerations included render time, file size, and video quality. Though the render time was 3-4 minutes longer than some other favourable options, the overall file size and quality far out weigh the additional wait.

Workshop 07 - Montage Editing
Workshop
This workshop was about montage editting, we were introduced to the likes of Lev Kuleshov and his contribution of the Kuleshov Effect. He talked about cinematography in terms of it’s value as a photography image and it’s value when sequenced with other shots.
We then moved on to the main meat of the workshop so to speak, which was montage styles; ‘Analytical’, ‘Idea Associative’, ‘Comparison’, and ‘Collision’.
Analytical; a number of shots put into a specific order that when viewed, will produce a sequential meaning.
Idea Associative; Two or more seemingly unrelated shots that when put together make a third idea or concept for the viewer.
Comparative; When a series of shots are showing a comparison of concepts or ideas.
Collision; Not to be confused with comparison, a number of shots that show a colliding contrast if you will.
Finally we were tasked with producing our own examples of the previously discussed montage styles.
Eisenstein’s Montage types;
Metric;
Metric editing involves transitions based on the number of frames that has passed, so it revolves around time. It doesn’t matter what is actually happening in any given scene.
Rhythmic;
Rhythmic editing is concerned with continuity, it is used to make a given scene visually continuous.
Tonal;
Tonal editing is more concerned with the content of the shot itself and it is used accordingly within editing. So the point would be to highlight the emotional meaning with the given shot/sequence.
Overtonal;
Overtonal editing is a grand combination of the previously discussed topics in order to produce an even greater, abstract effect.
Intellectual;
The act of using footage and shots from outside of the actual film scene/setting itself to illustrate a meaning related to the film.
