Smalltown Bringdown 2

The Birch Branch Bakery was just across the street from the Chipped Saucer. The old plaque beside the door read 'Est. 1887'. It had passed hands from one Hollorin to the next. Barbara, or Babs, Hollorin was the latest in the line of plump delicatessens. She had her father's rosy cheeks and boomong laugh. You faintly remembered the round old man from your childhood though he had long passed.

Babs smiled as you entered.  She was rarely anything but cheery, certain to offer any child a sample of her famous chocolate mousse. You slid your resume across the counter and she offered you a taste. You passed.

"It's a long shot, I know," You said. "But Jimmy's clearing house… well really, just tossing out an old lamp."

"Oh, hon, you know I usually just hire students. I can’t offer many hours. No tips either."

"I know," You shrugged. "But I could find something else to fill in the blanks."

"I'll think about it, okay, sweets?" She took your resume from the counter. 

"Thanks," You paused before the glass display. "Could I get a slice of lemon meringue? You know mom would kill me if I left without grabbing her a piece."

“Of course, dear.” Babs smiled and took the pie out from the stand. 

She set a slice carefully in a box and tied a bow around it with string; the usual fare. You took it with a smile and thank you. 

The door rang as you stepped out onto the street. Your last stop was the used bookshop/hobby store, Lloyd’s. You pushed inside as you balanced the box in one hand and greeted the old man sat behind the counter. Lucius was half off his stool as he bent over the model plane and carefully dobbed some clue along its body. His hair was streaked grey and black and lines betrayed a smile even when he was grimacing at a particularly tedious project.

“Hey, Lu,” You greeted as he looked up through his narrow glasses. “Just figured I’d drop by…” You neared and held the box against your hip and rested your folder on it. “Hand in a resume for good measure. I know, I know, not much going around but--”

“You not at the Saucer anymore?” He finished securing the wing and sat up with a groan.

“Not since a few days ago.” You slipped out a page and carefully placed it beside the toy plane. “We’ll see if I’m in the government’s lap by the end of the month, though.”

“Oh, dear, that’s terrible,” He took your resume and held it out as he tried to focus through his lenses, “That Jimmy’s a real slimy one. I’ll spare you my true thoughts, out of courtesy.”

“I’ll say it myself. He’s a bastard,” You added. “You know I never mind your language, Lu.”

“Certainly your mother didn’t like me teaching you all those pretty words,” He chuckled. “I’ll see what I can do.” He turned and set the paper down behind him on the shelf of unsorted books. “Might not be full hours but I could use a hand or two. Let me have a look at the books and I’ll get back to you.”

“Thanks,” You said. “Mind if I have a look before I go.”

“By all means,” He grabbed his tube of glue, “You always were my best customer.”

You nodded and headed back to your favourite section. He always had the most eclectic collection of biographies. A man in love with cinema, he’d given you a copy of Lena Horne’s memoir and stoked your own love for the past. Nestled in this shop was a peculiar array of nostalgia. A time you never knew but felt like your own. A childhood spent in the golden era with Astaire and Hayworth.

After a moment perusing, you chose a book on Tallulah Bankhead and headed for the counter. Lucius made no move to quit his gluing. You waved the book at him as you kept the folder and box under your other arm.

“On the house, dear,” He looked up briefly. “Your out a job and poor Tallulah’s been on that shelf for years. You give her a nice home. She’ll keep you good company.”

“Thanks,” You smiled and slid the book under the box as you adjusted your grip and moved your load in front of your stomach. “I’ll be back next week, Lu.”

“You will. I wanna know what you think of it.” He said. “She’s a special one.”

“Alright,” You chuckled and headed for the door. He cursed under his breath as he continued to fiddle with the model. 

You found yourself back on the main street. The old clock tower struck one in the afternoon and you headed towards the library. A black speck caught in the corner of your eye; the same which had drawn you several times that day. It was as if the town’s spectre was following you on your tour. You carried on and ducked into the small alcove between the suit shop and the pawn broker’s. You heard Lloyd’s door open and close.

You waited, five, maybe ten minutes, until you heard it again. The same footfalls that had echoed your own. That you had shrugged off as an effect of the small town. It was easy to feel followed in a place like this. It was hard not to cross paths with the same person several times over. The soles scuffed over the sidewalk as they trailed your former steps and the shadow in leather passed you by. You emerged from the alley and huffed. 

“There a reason you’re following me?” You asked.

Bucky stopped and chuckled as he pushed his shoulders back. He turned slowly, a smile on his face. “Am I?”

“Don’t think I didn’t notice earlier.” You growled. “Now, you don’t seem like you’re in need of employment and you’re not exactly the social butterfly of Birch.”

“I’m not?” He wondered. “People talk to me freely enough.”

“Is that what you’ve been doing? Talking?” You challenged.

“Well, I don’t get a chance to explore the town much,” He shrugged.

“And who would ever want to do that? You live here a week and you can retrace the map in your sleep,” You narrowed your eyes. “You still haven’t told me why you’re following me.”

“Can’t say that I am,” He stepped closer as he stared at the folder atop the small box in your arms. “How is the job hunt going anyway?”

Your nostrils flared but you didn’t answer. You could only watch as he opened the folder and slipped a copy of your resume free. He made a show of reading it before folding it and slipping it inside his jacket.

“Offer stands.” He said.

“Answer too,” You assured him. “If you’re so curious, I’m just now going to see my mother at the library. Save you the trouble of following me… you don’t seem the reading type.”

He grinned and tucked his hands in his pockets. “The pie will be a nice surprise,” He turned to let you through “Unfortunately, I do have to get back.”

“Mmmhmm,” You grumbled and slowly edged by him. 

You felt his gaze on you as you passed him. The heat of it lingered as you continued down the sidewalk. You didn’t dare to look back. You knew he was watching you. The eerie sensation did not relent until you shielded yourself beyond the library doors.

You waited three days before you followed up. Things moved slow in a small town but not everything. Change was stark, too. As you stepped inside the same doors as days before, you found your welcome not so warm. The tea shop, also a cafe, was the first on your agenda. Doris smiled and took your order but was evasive when you asked after your resume. It was much the same at each stop you made. A hollow weight settled in your chest.

Babs was her usual jovial self but paled as you asked if she had even part-time hours for you. She shook her head and muttered about low sales in a small town and all those other excuses. You frowned but accepted the rejection. You bought a half-dozen macadamia cookies and headed out. At Lloyd’s, you found Lucius amid several stacks of book as he raised his brows at the titles.

“Lu,” You greeted. “Hey.”

“You finished that book already?” He asked without looking away.

“Halfway there,” You said. “I was just… checking in.”

“Mmm,” He set a book in one of the neater stacks. “Yes, I supposed you’d be by sooner than later.”

You stepped into the middle of the mess and glanced around. He was sorting by author and genre. No doubt a new haul from a resident clearing their shelves. You took a book and placed it in its respective stack. He paused and looked at you. 

“My girl,” He began hesitantly.

“I know, you got nothing for me,” You nodded. “Just like everyone else. It’s okay.”

“Well, that’s not what I was gonna say at all,” He reproached. “I don’t care what that goon says, I could use someone on Sundays and you’ll get a few hours Mondays and Tuesdays. Not much, I know, but I gather it could help.”

“Oh, Lu,” You smiled and squeezed his arm. “So… he… what did he say to you?”

“Some nonsense about books being flammable, like I don’t know,” He scoffed. “I got insurance on this place. My granddaddy was no fool when he opened this place. He wants to burn it down, he can go right ahead. My payout will cover fresh paperbacks and the newest gadgets. He’d be doing me a favour, really.”

“You don’t have to--”

“I seen it before. As young as you are, I know you have too.” He continued sorting as he spoke. “You should’ve never pulled that knife but were I a younger man and there, I might’ve done the same.”

“Trust me, I know it was stupid,” You uttered. “Especially now but… Artie’s heart was about to burst.”

“Artie’s been on the edge of a heart attack for six years. I’m surprised those brutes didn’t push him over it,” Lu shook his head. “You got a place here, dear. Maybe look for something online. I don’t know much, just enough to order stock, but I’m sure you could find something. Town like this and a man like him, you won’t.”

“Thanks,” You set another sci-fi novel in a pile. “I appreciate it, really.”

“I know it’s not much,” He frowned. 

“No, no, I’ll make do,” You assured him. “But Lu…”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t go getting yourself hurt over me.”

“I’m an old man.” He winked at you and grabbed another book, “I’ll do whatever I want.”

You stopped in front of your mother’s house. You were tempted to kick over the metal beast that greeted you. It wasn’t hard to guess at its owner. You held your key up and admired it. A nice long scratch along the gas tank? Maybe a tear in the leather seat? You weren’t that stupid.

You took your usual detour to the back. Ash was sitting at the back door, growling. He perked up when you came through the gate but didn’t move. He let you pet him but you kept him outside as you slipped inside. You listened as you kicked off your shoes to the voices in the kitchen.

“That’ll be her,” Your mother said. She was friendly enough but you sensed the tension in her voice. “You need sugar?”

“No, black is fine,” Bucky answered and the hairs stood on your neck. 

You walked into the kitchen and ignored the man at the table as you crossed to your mother. She filled a mug with coffee as you set down the box of cookies. 

“Mom,” You greeted her with a smile and turned to the unexpected and unwanted visitor with arms crossed. “What do you want?”

“Hon, be nice,” Your mother poked you as she picked up the cup. “He just came here to talk.”

“Here,” You turned and took the mug from her. “You guys done talking then?”

“Not with me,” She said quietly and whispered as she turned her back to him. “Don’t go starting more trouble.”

You brushed past her and went to the table. You set the mug down and slid it across to him. “Fine. Talk.”

“You know, Mel, I think I’ll take some milk,” He said over your head.

You rolled your eyes as the fridge opened and closed. Your mother placed the carton of milk beside him with a small spoon and retreated.

“Now,” He poured the milk and stirred his coffee slowly. “I just wanted to see how the job hunt was going.”

“I think you know.” You sneered. “Mom, can you excuse us for a minute?”

“I don’t--” She began but stopped. “I’ll go check on Ash.”

You waited for her to leave. You folded your hands on the table and glared at Bucky.

“How dare you come into my mother’s house like this.” You snapped. “You think you’re scaring me?”

“If I wanted to scare you, you wouldn’t have walked into such a peaceable scene,” He returned evenly. “I don’t do half-measures.”

“Don’t you threaten her,” You retorted. “You can hound me but I will not have you going after her.”

“I haven’t done anything.” He smirked. “Really, you are paranoid. I have offered you a job and I have even offered my personal reference to your prospective employers.”

“Bullshit,” You said. “I know what you’re doing. I told you, I’m not interested. I got a job.”

“Oh?” He raised a brow. “Where’s that?”

“None of your business,” You snarled. “Now thank you for the offer but I will again politely decline it. Thank you.”

“How much?” He asked.

“What?” 

“How much is he paying you? I know it’s that grumpy old man with his books,” He scoffed. “Twelve hours a week. You think you can survive on that?”

“I think I told you no three times and I’m not gonna say it again.” You said.

“Sixteen an hour plus tips,” He took a drink of coffee. “People are generous when they drink.”

“Not interested.” You said through your teeth.

“Eighteen,” He countered. “Benefits too. You think Lucy gets her kids to the dentist for free.” You repeated yourself and he chuckled as he ran his fingertips along the stubble that lined his jaw. “Twenty.”

“You almost done your coffee?” You asked.

“You were a lot quieter in school,” He mused. “Didn’t realize you were so damn stubborn.”

“You need a waitress and you offering money like that, you can just head down to the Saucer and shout it out. They’ll be snapping at you.” You said.

His lips curled and he gripped the edge of the table. He took another gulp of coffee and cleared his throat. “I don’t know if you’re that oblivious or you’re playing with me.”

You were quiet. You stared at him dumbly. Heat crawled up your spine.

“I don’t want a waitress. I want you.” His jaw squared and his eyes sparked. “And while it was cute to see you holding that knife to my man’s throat, I can’t have you running around kicking dirt in my face.”

You swallowed and kept your expression staunch. “Not interested.” You enunciated the words carefully.

He clicked his tongue and tilted his head. He laughed darkly to himself and finished his coffee. His chair scraped loudly as he stood and took his coat off the back of it. He pulled the leather on as his eyes met yours. 

“You just remember what happened to your daddy.” He intoned.

“I don’t remember him at all,” You said through the twinge in your chest. “Your club made sure of that, didn’t they?”

He growled and rounded the table. You looked up at him as his fingertips glossed over the tabletop. He leaned down until his lips nearly touched your cheek. 

“You’ll remember your ma, though.” Your hand shot up and he recoiled, quick to catch it. He smiled as he squeezed your wrist. “You think about my offer one last time.” He said slowly. “You can come get your apron on Monday… or I’ll be dropping by on Tuesday.”

He stood straight and released you. He smoothed his leather jacket and strolled through to the back hallway. The door opened and you heard your mother’s surprised greeting and Bucky’s sickly farewell. Your mouth was dry and your heart raced as if you had just run a mile. 

You stared at the old oval frame between the windows. Your mother under the arm of a man who shouldn’t have been a stranger. A man who you seemingly took after. Who, despite his absence, could teach you an important lesson; know when to stop pushing your luck.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt.16

Keith was sitting on the front steps when Lance pulled into his driveway. Their meeting for a moment, before Pidge was leaning past him

“Get in, loser! We’re going out!”

Rubbing his ear, Lance didn’t appreciate Pidge’s loud voice abusing his eardrum

“I’m fine right here!”

“Don’t be like that. We’re going ghost hunting, get in the back!”

“Lance was going to drop me in town...”

“Why? Everything’s shut now apart from the bars. Stop being antisocial and come look for ghosts with us!”

That was how Keith ended up in the boot of Lance’s bronco. Lance could feel the tension from the driver’s seat, Pidge having climbed over into the back so she and Hunk could talk with Keith, who’d barely gotten two words in thanks to the pair of them trying their best to make him feel involved. Lance had seen it on Keith’s face when he’d pulled up. Keith looking up at him like he’d kicked him to the curb without good reason. If he stopped to think about it, Keith would fill that hole in the group that his eventual leaving with bring. Plus, Keith would be there to help Matt reconnect with his family whenever that eventually happened... A whole lot of roads seemed to be leading back to Keith, and Lance couldn’t put up stop signs fast enough.

Swinging by Pidge’s so she could collect her beloved camera, Lance stared up at the visitors centre before them. He’d had enough trouble last time they were here, and though there wouldn’t be any drunks this time, he was sure his friends would find a way to make trouble all over again

“‘Sup, Losers?! This is the Garrison Trio, coming at ya with a new video. Today we’re talking another look at arguably Garrison’s most haunted address! Yep, that’s right, your favourite visitors centre, and mine, it’s the old Garrison Hospital!”

Stuck in a silent “staring but not staring” battle with Keith watching Lance out the corner of his eye, he’d missed Pidge passing her camera off to Hunk so she could film her introduction

“Tonight we have our usual favourites, Me, Hunk, and Lance, but we also have a guest tagging along to see the work we do! Pan to Keith”

Hunk moved the camera, Keith not even noticing he’d been recorded. Lance had the feeling Keith wasn’t supposed to be being recorded. Anyone who saw his face online wouldn’t be able to forget him

“Yep! Our little trio has become a foursome! The awesome foursome. Now, if you click the link below this video you’ll be able to read up on the chilling history and the role the hospital played during world war three! Let’s just say, a lot of people died in a lot of not so lovely ways. Let’s head in!”

As Pidge took the camera from Hunk, Lance took her by the arm

“You can’t film Keith”

“What?”

“You can’t film him. It’s something to do with Shiro’s work. He works on things for the government, for like big bad multimillion dollar corporations that are up to dodgy things. I totally blanked on it, but Shiro will get in trouble”

Pidge raised an eyebrow

“I didn’t know you and Shiro were that tight”

“I was taking selfies and he caught me”

The lies hurt, but Keith’s face getting out their in there videos could bring trouble on all of them, not just Keith... Any vampires with a grudge would see their faces with his and they already knew where to come...

“Oh shit...”

Lance nodded, hoping his facial features portrayed the right emotions. Hunk was the one stole the role of genius from under Pidge’s nose

“I think you’ve got a dusk mask in the glove box from that colour run we didn’t end up doing... he could wear that?”

“Perfect. You two go ahead and I’ll get it. Don’t bring it up though, he’s super socially stunted”

Pidge fluttered her eyelashes

“Is someone getting protective of their “not boyfriend, boyfriend?””

“No, but you’ll have to get protective of that camera if you don’t stop bringing that up”

Pidge’s look turned to betrayal, then acceptance

“Fiiiiine. Do what you have to do. Hunk and I will go ahead. Come on, Hunk”

Rifling through his glovebox, Lance found the branded face mask. The colour run had two components to it, first you did a 5km walk/run, then in some weird kind of sales seasonal thing, there was a kind of sideshow at the end with live music, games, and seeing it was around Halloween, a corn maze and a haunted house. They’d paid, skipped the run, covertly let themselves into the corn maze, beaten that, then hit up the haunted house. Pidge deciding they all needed souvenirs, the mask being one of them... not that it was overly spooky. It was a simple black face mask with splatters of neon paint across the front, a few “teeth” on the right side and the fun run logo underneath. It was actually kind of “Keith”. Not that he was going there.

Keith had hung back as Pidge and Hunk unlocked the visitor centre and dealt with security. Forced to do the talking thing, Lance held the mask out to Keith who eyed it

“What’s that?”

“Pidge films these things”

“And?”

“And she puts them online. I didn’t think you’d want your face out there. If anyone saw the videos then you’d have your cover blown in further missions, making it harder for you to help the people who need help. I told Pidge that Shiro did covert work for the government so you needed to keep a low profile. I’m not sure she got it, but with Matt and Shiro being tight I think she was willing to let it slide. It hasn’t been worn, and it should cover most of your face. You can use my jacket too if you want, just keep the hood up”

Keith took the mask, staring down at as he tilted his neck. Lance automatically finding his eyes trying to find where he’d bitten the man. He’d never bitten anyone before so he didn’t know the trick of healing a bite to nothing. His own marks from turning were still there for the most part. Keith’s neck was smooth, Lance unable to see any blemishes. God! What was he doing...?! Nope... Fucking Keith

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because you got dragged along by my friends deciding they’re also your friends”

“I thought you said I was a useless hunter”

“No. I said you had anger issues, like right now you’re getting angry at me. Do you want my jacket or not?”

“No. This’ll be fine. She really believes, doesn’t she?”

“Yeah. That’s probably why Matt has kept his distance. She wants to be part of this world, and I’m not about to let that happen”

“So you sabotage her?”

“No. Most of what humans collect isn’t real or it’s reflections. I come along not only to show I support her and Hunk, but so nothing happens to either of them. There’s death in that place and I don’t want something bad to happen. I also don’t plan on telling her about Matt, you, or Shiro. It’s not fun lying, but it does keep them safe. If she ever finds out the truth, I know she’s going to be angry, and I’m prepared for that. You better come along, both my friends seem pretty keen on you, meaning if you hurt them, I will hunt you down myself”

“I’m not going to harm a human”

“Good. Keep it that way”

Pidge was already explaining various exhibits in the visitor centre when Lance and Keith slipped through the front door. A shudder rolled up Lance’s spine, earning him a jab in the side from Keith. What was Keith getting annoyed about? People shuddered all the time for no good reason

“What?”

“You shuddered”

“It happens”

“Don’t fob me off like that. There’s something here, isn’t there? Where is it?”

“Oh great, so vampires and werewolves aren’t enough for you now? You want to hunt ghosts to?”

What was Keith going to do? Stab it? The mental image of Keith stabbing a ghost was too funny, a snort of laughter escaping

“Look... if there’s something...”

“Relax. Yeah, there’s death here but I don’t want to see it. I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to acknowledge it’s presence”

“But you can see it?”

Lance shook his head. That’s what he had his trust glasses for

“Nope”

“You’re lying to me”

“I’m not lying. And keep your voice down, do you really want Pidge and Hunk to know about us?

Keith shot him an unimpressed look. Lance could have worded that better

“This isn’t over”

It could be, if Keith dropped the subject and kicked away like a bottle cap under the fridge that you couldn’t be bothered picking up, so it laid there undiscovered for another 6 months, when it and another dozen finally popped up to remind you how lazy you were about cleaning

“Oh, goody”

“Lance, come over here, you’re better at this side of things”

Lance rolled his eyes at Pidge. She was doing a bang up job making the visitors centre sound like the must visit spot as it was. Walking over to her, he eyed the shackles in the display case with disgust. He couldn’t really justify the shackling of mine broken soldiers, though some had to be chained down to prevent them from taking their own lives. He’d gone through a stage like that, not that anyone other than Coran knew. He’d had a mental breakdown with the stress of final exams the first time around. He knew too many answers and didn’t want to score a perfect score, that would have made him stand out too much. He aimed for above average on all his tests and exams, but sometimes he slipped up and got too perfect a score that drew everyone’s attention to him when all he wanted to do was blend in. He’d been beaten by a bunch of jealous classmates for his trouble, then broken down, taking himself to Coran who helped piece him back together again. Yeah, Coran would always be his go to guy

“Shackles...”

Letting the narrative of fear roll of his tongue, he talked about the deteriorated mental condition of the soldiers and how things worked when it came to getting them help and the legal issues faced by their families. Lance was kind of sure no one wanted to sit through this, because he was pretty sure he was the only one who nerded out over the law these days. Keith had moved to stand behind Hunk, who was filming, his arms were crossed, feet shoulder width apart, with an amused look on his face that Lance felt like punching.

“And thank you for that Lance, somehow you made all the legal stuff seem that much more boring than last time. Alrighty then, why don’t we go see if we can find us a ghost?”

Hunk was already skittering, letting out a squeak as Pidge motioned for him to follow her, leaving Lance to fall into step beside Keith. Great. He couldn’t just leave Keith in town once everything was over. Not with Hunk and Pidge on a mission to make the man their friend

“Are you usually like that?”

Lance had no idea what Keith meant. Sure, he might get a little technical, but it wouldn’t be the first time, nor the last

“Like what?”

“All technical? Doesn’t it turn viewers away? I mean, I don’t think they needed to know about the bylaws of Garrison”

“Oh, shut up. We don’t get many views as it is”

“You’ll get even less if you spend the whole time ranting”

“I wasn’t ranting, I was explaining. A soldiers mentality doesn’t end on the battlefield. Most of them never wanted to die. Most of them never wanted to wrapped up in war to begin with. They fought for us and for what they believed in, and as a whole, we failed them. If we don’t educated people on the past then there’s not much hope for the future”

“You, like, really believe in this, don’t you?”

“I believe in the belief people hold. If that’s what you mean?”

“I mean this legal thing... isn’t there anything else you’d rather be doing?”

“Like ripping families apart so I can feast on their children?”

Keith groaned at him, Lance internally smirking. Yeah, he remembered and wasn’t going to forget any time soon

“In my defence, your lot are mostly scum”

“And what about me? You listened in this morning”

“I... don’t want to talk about that”

“Why? Does it make me all that much harder to kill knowing I actually care about my clients?”

“As you rob them in fees”

Keith’s comment rubbed him the wrong way, Lance spitting in an angry whisper

“Yep. I’m so horrible that I charged a family a whole $50 for hours of my time. You on the other hand, if I charged at douche prices, would be paying me something like $10,000 for taking up so much of my damn time. I know I’m a monster, you can lay off with the damn mocking”

Starting to jog to catch up with Hunk and Pidge, Lance wanted to go home to bed. His arm was aching, as was his ankle. He hadn’t had the chance to drink since jumping out the window and his lack of routine was really getting to him. Catching up to him again, Keith decided he still wanted to talk

“Why law?”

“Why law, what?”

“You could have been anything”

“I could have, but I don’t think you’d understand”

“Try me”

Lance didn’t miss the way his words had thrown been back at him. Shrugging it off, he wasn’t letting Keith under his skin

“I could have been a dancer. I did entertain the idea of being a hairdresser, but a vampire with scissors means risking a cut and an accidental turning. I like my job. Can’t say I don’t like the idea of yours, but it wouldn’t be my first choice of career choice”

“Will you two shut up? You’re scaring the ghosts away”

Lance’s eyes accidentally met Keith’s, both of them snorting and looking away from each other. If only they were, then they could all head home early

“Sorry, Pidge. Keith was telling me how scared he was”

“I did not!”

“Shhhh... didn’t you hear Pidge? Your big mouth is scaring the ghosts away”

“Mine? You won’t shut up”

“Both of you shut up, or you’re being sent outside to wait”

Hunk raised his hand

“Uh, can I go wait outside?”

“You’re the camera man, grow a back bone!”

Hunk gave Pidge a mock salute at her snap, which she flipped him off over. Lance made the motion of zipping of his mouth and throwing away the key. Keith gave a shrug. Apparently he didn’t hold a healthy fear of Pidge... well, that wouldn’t remain for long.

No. Keith barely lasted half an hour before he incurred Pidge’s wrath. Like a misbehaving school child, Keith was sent to sit at the top of the stairs, all because he accidentally tripped over the lip of the door frame. Pidge was sure she’d seen some kind of ghostly orb, sent fleeing by Keith’s stupidity. Making the mistake of snorting over Keith being taken down a peg, Lance was sent to sit beside Keith... both of them not looking at each other, to avoid bursting into laughter because being in a time out was ridiculous. There wasn’t anything there. The orb was a reflection of light from the camera, and that’s all that’d been to it. When Hunk moved, the reflected light disappeared, Keith didn’t deserve being yelled at... but fuck it hadn’t been funny.

Surprises - Part 2

Summary: You received your surprise from Crowley, your very own Hellhound. Hunting with a Hellhound has been interesting, but things get complicated when some unexpected guests stop by.  Characters: Reader, Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester, Crowley Word Count: 3725 (whoops, kind of went crazy) Warnings: Some minor angst, a few curse words A/N: Second and (probably) last part of this series. It was fun to write and I hope you enjoyed this story! Just in case anyone was wondering, the Hellhound’s name (Onchú) is pronounced “Un-Choo”. As always, I’m still a newbie and would appreciate any feedback you all can give!

Over the next six months, you adjusted to the life of having a Hellhound as a pet; although you didn’t really view Onchú as a pet. He was more of a partner that would show up and help whenever the shit hit the fan. All you had to do was say his name and he appeared at your side. He saved your life several times, including when you were almost killed by a nasty shapeshifter who had an interesting fetish for women with Y/H/C hair. You couldn’t help but shudder as you remembered him braiding your hair and whispering to you.

You doubled up on the amount of cases you were working due to the efficiency of having Hellhound assistance, but you had to be careful. Last month, you ran into another hunter on a job in a one-stoplight town in Southeast Oregon. He offered for you to help him with the small nest of vamps, but you couldn’t risk having to call Onchú in case the job went sideways. Judging by how many scars this guy had on his body, you knew he wasn’t a new hunter, so you bowed out and let him tackle the nest.

You were able to buy a new pickup truck thanks to the money Crowley had given you for the museum job, which was a welcome upgrade to the clunker you had before. Although Onchú didn’t need to ride with you (his whole teleportation thing was still pretty interesting), he did enjoy lounging in the bed of the truck while you cruised down the highway.

You were walking back from the grocery store when you got a news alert on your phone. You smiled at the prospect of another job and tapped the notification to read what it was. A body was found in the woods of a town about fifty miles from where you were, heart missing and torn to shreds. Werewolf, you thought as you reached your driveway and walked up the steps to your front door. The news article was from at least a day ago, making you question why it had just popped up now. The news algorithm must be having some issues again, causing you to sigh as you shifted the grocery bags in your arm and unlocked your door.

You closed the door behind you, flicking the deadbolt back in place, before shuffling over to the kitchen table and dropping the bags with a heavy thud. They had a sale on t-bone steaks, so you stocked up, knowing they were Onchú’s favorite snack.

“Onchú!” You spoke loudly before you heard the familiar pitter-patter of his paws thumping down the hallway. Your original assumptions about his height were correct; he stood about a half foot shorter than you. He stopped at your side and sat back on his haunches, watching you dart around the kitchen putting groceries away.

You had taught him a few commands in addition to the ones he already knew. Most were for safety reasons, like “hide”, “calm” and “freeze”, but you were currently working on teaching him how to shake. Probably not the best use of your time, but Onchú had grown on you and you viewed him as an adorable addition to your life. He also enjoyed the snacks you gave when you were training him.

You pulled out a fresh t-bone, causing Onchú to sniff the air and wag his tail, smacking it against the cabinet behind him, rattling the dishes sitting inside. “Calm,” you warned, to which he immediately ceased wagging his tail. “Good boy!” you smiled, cutting a piece of t-bone off and tossing it to him. He leaned to his left slightly to catch the piece of meat and began chewing it happily.

You were about to begin teaching him to shake again, when there was a knock at your door. You quickly tossed Onchú another piece of steak before commanding “Hide.” He chewed the piece of steak as he made his way down the hallway to your back spare bedroom, nudging the door closed with his nose. Nobody could see him, but you didn’t want any guests tripping over something they couldn’t see.

Wiping your hands and straightening your shirt, you made your way to the door and peered through the peephole, only to be met with a pair of brilliant apple-green eyes staring back at you. Dean Winchester. You’d know those eyes and freckles anywhere. You opened your door and smiled at the older Winchester, brushing a loose piece of hair behind your ears and taking a moment to appreciate his nicely fitting fed suit.

“Dean freaking Winchester. How the hell are you?” You pulled him into an embrace, eyeing Sam who was about a foot behind him. “Holy crap, is that Sammy?”

“Hey, Y/N.” Sam smiled and waved. You released Dean and stepped toward Sam, bringing him into a tight hug as well. “Come on in, you guys hungry?” You turned and walked back inside your house, missing a confused and concerned look the brothers exchanged before following you inside.

“I have some steaks and potatoes, if you guys are planning on staying. What brings you to my neck of the woods anyways?” You turned around to face the brothers, only to be met with a quick punch to the left side of your jaw and a pair of strong arms wrapping around your torso and arms. You groaned and tried to squirm, only causing the pair of arms to squeeze tighter. You wiggled your jaw and opened your eyes.

Sam was standing in front of you with the infamous demon blade in his hands, leaving you to assume Dean was the one currently immobilizing your arms. Sam raised the blade horizontal a few inches away from your chest.

“Get out of her, you son of a bitch. Y/N, you have to fight this.” Sam said, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a flask of holy water. Great, they think you’re possessed.

“Guys, I’m not posses-“ A splash of holy water in your face stopped your sentence. You sighed heavily, shaking the excess water off your face before opening your eyes. Sam furrowed his brow and tilted his head to the side, looking at Dean.

Dean quickly released you and walked around to your front next to his brother, sharing the same look of bewilderment that Sam had. You looked back and forth between them before running a hand down your face to wipe any extra water from it.

“You reek of sulfur, Y/N. We thought you were possessed. Sorry about the punch,” Sam said as he sheathed the demon blade back into his jacket.

Crap. You forgot that you were immune to the smell of Onchú. You chewed on your lip, trying to think of an explanation for the smell. It was too pungent to be explained away by ”bathroom business”, so you walked over to the large rug in front of your door and flipped the bottom edge over, showing a devil’s trap painted in red paint on the underside.

“It’s alright, Sam. I’m not a demon. Wouldn’t have answered the door if I was,” you laughed, trying to avoid the elephant…well, I guess Hellhound in this case, in the room.

“Why does it reek of sulfur in here, then? Were you summoning something? Me and Sammy were in the area investigating a werewolf case and thought we would stop by,” Dean said, cautiously looking around.

You walked toward the kitchen, avoiding the question again, still worrying your lip. You loved the Winchester boys and didn’t want to lie to them…but you know they have a history will Hellhounds and you’d rather keep them out of the loop. They do know how to keep secrets, and if you did tell them, they probably wouldn’t spread the news on the hunter grapevine.

“Y/N?” Sam’s voice pulled you out of your thoughts, as you felt a large hand rest on your shoulder. “Are you in trouble?”

You patted Sam’s hand and turned to face him. You smiled softly. “No, I’m not in trouble. I just…I don’t want you guys getting involved in it. Last thing I need is judgement from the Winchesters.”

Pushing past Sam and opening your freezer, you pulled out an icepack and pressed it to your jaw. You could already feel the bruise beginning to form and you were surprisingly proud at the impressive right hook that Sam had hit you with. You walked over to the couch and plopped down, tucking your feet up underneath you.

“We’re not going to judge you, Y/N. Are you working with demons? Did you make a deal? You know me and Dean are experts at secret keeping and problem solving. We’re just worried about you. Please, tell us what’s going on,” Sam said as he sat down on your recliner, Dean taking a position on the couch next to you.

You stared at your dark T.V. for a good thirty seconds, running through the possible ramifications that could come from telling them you have a pet Hellhound. They do know who Crowley is and have worked with him in the past, so at least they can understand the jobs you take from him.

At the same time, having a pet Hellhound is dangerous and taboo for a hunter, and could possibly cause them to cut all contact with you…and you didn’t want that. You sighed heavily and looked at Dean, then at Sam. You’ve worked with the Winchesters before and you trust your life to them. You didn’t want to lie, and you set up a silent prayer that they would understand.

You closed your eyes and wet your lips. “It’s better if I show you,” You chuckled to yourself silently. They actually wouldn’t be able to see anything, but they would get the idea.

Both brothers attentively sat up in their chairs at the same time, waiting for you to continue.

“Onchú.” Your voice broke as you firmly said your Hellhound’s name. You could hear the creek of a door and the thumping of his paws as he made his way down the hallway to the living room. Both Dean and Sam groaned as you assumed they smelled the sulfur and rotting flesh of your Hellhound as he stepped into the living room. Dean was quick, jumping up to his feet at almost the exact same time that Sam did.

“Y/N?! That…that’s,” Sam stammered as he slowly reached into his jacket for the demon blade again.

“A Hellhound. Yeah. His name is Onchú and he’s mine. He has been for the last six months,” You explained as Dean and Sam both backed their way away from you toward the entrance of your home.

“How? Hellhounds can only be controlled by Demons. But you’re not a demon,” Dean hissed as his back hit the wall of your living room.

“It’s a long story. Can you please come back and sit down? He won’t hurt you.” You kept an eye on Onchú as he slowly made his way over to where you were sitting. He kept his eyes on the Winchesters as he sat on his haunches in front of you. You scratched his head and rubbed his chest between his front paws. He closed his eyes and began to breathe in deeply, pleased with your touch.

Suddenly, Onchú stood up from his position in front of you and growled and howled, staring directly at Dean. He bounded over to where Dean was currently still pressed against the wall and began to rapidly sniff him. You could hear Onchú’s claws digging into your wood floors as his growl got deeper and louder. He was getting ready to attack. How? You hadn’t commanded him to attack.

“Onchú! Heel!” You yelled, standing up from your position on the couch. Onchú ceased growling immediately and but stayed in front of the older Winchester for a few seconds before turning around and returning to his position in front of you.

“Dean, I’m so sorry! I don’t know what just happened. He’s never acted like that before unless I commanded him to kill,” You turned to Onchú and commanded “Hide”. It would be best for him to remain hidden for the remainder of your conversation with The Winchesters. You watched him retreat down the hallway again and turned to look at the boys.

Dean cleared his throat and readjusted his suit, breathing in a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. Sam hesitantly put the demon blade away again and followed his brother back into your living room. Dean sat in the recliner this time while Sam remained standing.

“I’ve worked odd jobs for Crowley over the last few years. Jobs that require disabling security systems, breaking and entering, you know…stuff I’m good at. He pays me well and leaves me out of his vocabulary as long as I don’t go after demons. It’s not ideal, but you guys know that hunting doesn’t pay,” You began to explain, carefully watching the expressions of the brothers before you continued.

“Crowley had me break into a museum about six months ago and steal an athame that one of his minions had lost. He paid me, but also said he had a surprise. That surprise turned out to be Onchú. He’s loyal to me and completely obedient.”

“Yeah, not completely obedient,” Dean grumbled back at you.

“I’m really sorry, Dean. I don’t know why he did that. You haven’t been hanging around any Hellkitties have you?” You chuckled softly, hoping to break the tension in the air.

Sam smiled momentarily and made his way over to the couch, sitting next to you. “Is he still in here?”

“No, I sent him back to the spare bedroom down the hall. He knows things like ‘hide’ and ‘freeze’ to make it safer for us on hunts,” You explained.

“You take him hunting? That’s got to be…useful,” Sam sounded genuinely impressed that a hunter was using a Hellhound to work cases and kill monsters.

“That doesn’t explain why Fido almost made me a chew toy.” Dean’s cold stare was directed right at you, causing you to break eye contact and frown. “You said Crowley was the one who gave you the pooch?”

You nodded, not looking up from the cuticle you were currently picking at.

“Fine. Let’s get his ass over here and ask him ourselves,” Dean said as he pulled out his phone and rapidly tapped on the screen, sending a text message, you assumed. Dean tucked his phone back into his jacket and strummed his fingers on the arm of the recliner. You found yourself admiring how well-worn his hands looked; callused and rough from all the hunts he’s been on in his lifetime.

“Hello boys. And…Y/N.” Crowley’s voice snapped you back as he appeared in the center of your living room, across the coffee table from you and in front of the T.V.

“How’s Onchú? Has he been a good boy?” Crowley had a teasing and playful tone in his voice.

“Up until today, yes. He almost just killed Dean. Randomly jumped up and started sniffing him and growling. I didn’t command him to kill, and he did obey when I told him to heel, but it was still pretty unsettling. Any idea what that was about?” You questioned Crowley, crossing your arms over your chest.

Crowley huffed and looked over at Dean, before smiling and hanging his head. “Impressive. I’m surprised the pup remembers you.”

“Remembers me? What does that mean?” Dean asked with a sharp bite in his tone.

“That Hellhound belonged to Lilith.” Crowley replied. “Remember her? The demon you sold your soul to in order to save Moose’s life?” He turned to Sam. “And the one that Moose gave the ‘demonic love squeeze’ to and killed?”

“So…you’re telling me that the Hellhound that Y/N has…” Dean began.

“Is the same one that came and ripped you apart and dragged your soul to Hell all those years ago. Yes,” Crowley said.

“You neglected to mention any of that when you surprised me with him, Crowley,” You hissed, watching Dean’s expression change from anger to sadness to fear and back through again.

“I hadn’t the foggiest the hound would remember anyone. Once he got a whiff of Squirrel, he probably switched back to attack mode since he thought he killed him all those years ago. They don’t give up until the job is done,” Crowley shifted back and forth on his feet. “Once Lilith died, Onchú became almost lethargic. He was hers for centuries, and he refused to allow another demon to train him. That’s when I got the idea to see if I could train him to work with a human.”

You sighed and pinched the bridge of your nose with your fingers. “All of this would have been nice to know when I accepted Onchú from you, Crowley.”

“Semantics, love. Now that you’ve commanded him to heel, he won’t go after Squirrel anymore, so problem solved. Now, if you’ll excuse me…I have some torture sessions to get back to,” Crowley said before he vanished from your living room.

You took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly, blinking a few times as the breath passed over your lips. You looked over at Dean, then at Sam, trying to gauge their responses. Dean basically had a huge bomb just dropped on him, and Sam probably wasn’t happy about this new development either.

“Dean, I…” You began, wanting to explain or offer your side of the whole ordeal.

“It’s fine, Y/N.” Dean interrupted. “I mean; the whole Lilith thing isn’t cool…but thank you for telling him to heel before he tore me up. Again.”

You flinched at the way he said “again”. Like you just reopened an old wound and rubbed salt in it. You looked over to Sam and offered a half smile. He smiled back and shrugged at you.

“Lilith’s Hellhound aside, we’ll keep this to ourselves. Dean and I have unfortunately had to work with Crowley before and we understand,” Sam offered with a warm smile.

“Would you mind if I called him back out here again? I want to make sure he knows your scent and that you’re a friend,” You asked, looking back at Dean.

Dean tensed for a minute before relaxing and quickly nodding twice at you.

“Hang on. Before you do, give me a second to grab something from the trunk of the Impala.” Sam said as he stood up and briskly walked over to your door and outside. He returned a few minutes later with two pairs of glasses in his hand. He tossed a pair to Dean and slipped his on his face before he sat back down. Dean fiddled with the glasses in his hand before breathing in deeply and putting them on.

“They’re treated with Holy Fire, allows us to see Hellhounds.” Sam explained when he saw your confused look.

“Handy,” You replied, “Ready?”

Both brothers nodded at you and you cleared your throat. “Onchú.”

You could hear Dean’s breathing speed up as you all heard the thumping of Onchú’s paws as he made his way down the hall and to the living room. You could see Sam’s eyes go wide as Onchú came around the corner. He ignored Sam and walked right up to you, plopping himself down in front of the couch between you and Sam. You rubbed his head and smiled, looking up at Dean. Dean was still tense, but once Onchú sniffed the air and didn’t charge at him, he relaxed.

“Dean, stick your hand out, let him sniff you,” You asked as you saw Sam reach out and slowly run a hand down Onchú’s back.

Dean looked at you for a second, making you think he was going to tell you to go to Hell, but he leaned up in the recliner and slowly brought his right hand to a few inches in front of Onchú’s nose. Onchú sniffed his hand before sticking his tongue out and licking the entire length of Dean’s hand. Dean grimaced at the feeling and retracted his hand, shaking the slobber off it. Sam chuckled and patted Onchú on the head, muttering “good boy” under his breath.

You stood up and, carefully stepping over Onchú, made your way to the kitchen, cutting a piece of steak from the t-bone still sitting on your counter. Onchú looked up at you and raised himself up on his haunches as you sat back down, obviously smelling the meat you had concealed in your hand.

“Dean, hold out your hand, palm up,” You asked. Dean complied, holding his hand out in front of him. “Onchú, Shake.”

Onchú raised his right paw and placed it in Dean’s open hand. Dean raised an eyebrow and closed his hand around Onchú’s paw, shaking it gently a few times before releasing it. You swore for a moment you saw a smile tugging at the corner of Dean’s lips. He cleared his throat and looked up at you when he noticed you staring at him.

“Good boy, Onchú,” You exclaimed, tossing the piece of meat to him. He caught it easily and chowed down, returning to his spot on the floor between you and Sam.

“This is so weird,” Dean muttered. “But, I guess as long as you’re not killing humans, we’ll keep this to ourselves.”

“Thanks, guys. I really don’t think any other hunters would understand,” You said quietly, looking down at Onchú, who appeared to be taking a nap.

“Yeah, for sure. You know you can trust us, Y/N.” Sam said, slapping his thighs as he stood up, careful not to disturb Onchú. “But, we have a werewolf hunt to get back to. You want to come with?”

“Of course! I don’t think Onchú has had werewolf yet,” You smiled, looking down at your Hellhound who was looking back up at you, responding to his name.

Dean stood up and made his way to your front door and opened it, letting Sam step through first. Dean paused and turned to look at you. “He’s not riding in Baby. It would take me weeks to get the smell out of the upholstery.”

“He doesn’t need to. You’ll see,” You chuckled as you grabbed your bag and followed Dean outside, locking the door behind you.

The lady told me my payments were going to be $144 with them and when I told her no she put me on hold. When she returned she offered me the $55. She read back to me everything I am getting which is a lot more than what I was getting from Liberty Mutual for a lot less price.
