True colour - lawful, helps the user to navigate what's real, what's magic * Debug - neutral, just reverts things back to normal * Resin - chaotic, distrups others to use their power

But it present even with creation/destruction (which I would say considered most "holly" and "evil", despite they can be bood or bad too)

Lucky charm - neutral, since you can use it for good or bad * Champion - lawful, it helps ACTIVLY the user's endevours * Magnum opus - chaotic, a cloud hard to control, what grows, what not

That’s somewhere near 3-4 years of playtime, which normally would be seen as very impressive in the context of an ongoing game experience, but again, this is a game that’s 20 years old.

After my antipathy towards Warlords of Draenor, any momentary curiosity I had about World of Warcraft ran into other events — the ongoing stories of abuse in Blizzard soured me on dealing with them at all. During this time, though, World of Warcraft was undergoing some pretty big and notable changes, changes that feel like they were explicitly trying to address things I was interested in.

Models were updated and made more pretty, more in line with a modern game of its form and presentation. Player races were diversified, with more distinct options for types of characters that fit in the world. Customisation of characters became more approachable, with the barber getting more and more unlocks including the ability to make shapeshifting characters turn into more cool things in Shadowlands. Flying is being treated core to the experience of the game and not an afterthought they want to hide you from, with Dragonflight. With the most recent release, War Within, there’s the release of a new system called warbands that’s designed to explicitly treat your alts as if they’re all contributing to the progress of one another.

Oh, and the staff at Blizzard unionised!

These are all things that interest me and I kinda want to encourage! And it’s not like it costs me money to play World of Warcraft — it has a free trial mode, and I have some of the play tokens banked as well, having earned them doing something I really enjoyed in World of Warcraft back in Warlords of Draenor (rolling old raids for gold).

I haven’t touched World of Warcraft though.

What excites me about this possible space is taking my old characters, updating them to the way the game works, and reconsidering their place in the world, the way the creative space of the game, with its roleplay elements, has changed what they can be. There’s a whole world of creative ideas and community of people who are interested in sharing and connecting to that creativity in a way that I like and would love to experience, hypothetically. Give me a creative space to make characters in and I will do what I can to have a good time.

Some of the things that I’ve seen are in the game that interest me:

Kul Tiran humans introduce a whole new aesthetic for druids, which have shapeshifted forms based out of monstrous collections of bracken and skulls. There’s a deep sea rottenness to what they’re after, which brings a grim, gloomy horror aesthetic to druids. I like this, and I am a real Druid Respector.

Void Elves give the Alliance a slenderer male body! I don’t want to be stuck playing just girls because guys in World of Warcraft almost all look like horrible blocks of meat propelled into action by a cursed mime. Suddenly, characters who are proud of their appearance and willing to be flashy are on the table, as opposed to my Alliance dudes who are both shapeshifted into monster forms.

Lightforged Draenei are Draenei but moreso, and Draenei are already cool looking. I don’t like the way that Draenei dudes look like a different species to the women, I wish there was more body type variety, but I guess I could always do a genderswap there.

There are Zandalari trolls that turn into dinosaurs! They turn into dinosaurs! I love dinosaurs! I don’t like the troll models, but turning into dinosaurs is such a powerful pull for me for things I want to do in the game.

There are power customisation available for Warlocks, allowing them to change their pets and powers.

There’s a whole new class, the Demon Hunter, that seems to exist to peel off what my Demonology Warlock used to use a rune to pseudo-tank with, and now I have no idea what I’m going to do with that character if I go back to him.

There’s a melee hunter now! Fighting side by side with a buddy beast is really cool, and I like melee weapons more than I like guns.

I don’t want to download a huge game install to play around with character customisation, though, and that means any of this stuff I want to play with I have to find a way to, online. WoWhead does have a character model viewer, which you can customise like a PC! That’s not nothing! It’s a little slow, but it’s a way you can look at the models without downloading the game. But you know how hard it was to find? Because it wasn’t a thing that showed up when I went looking, I stumbled on it while looking at other guides for this article. Because when you type World of Warcraft Character Creator online, you’re going to get a program in a website that lets you customise talents and do math on equipment.

There isn’t any kind of central resource for what you can do to customise a character’s aesthetics. Armour sets and transmogs are part of it, but it also includes unlockable appearance and hairstyles, your character’s race option, specific mounts available to your class, specific titles available to your class, and then oddball niche things like, again, the quest that you can do as a Warlock to unlock. Or there’s glyphs, but not those glyphs, and not these glyphs.

The entire process of character customisation is something that is opaque from the outside, which means if you want to see what you can make you have to be in the game already, and then able to bring together a variety of sources to play the game’s pieces together. Instead of letting you consider the character you’re going to make and their place in the world, when you want to make a character in World of Warcraft, the game and the community want you to know that there’s math and mechanics available for you, but being part of the world is something of an afterthought.
