Wow! COVID happened, eh? The good news is, I’m back. And I live in Japan, now. And my Japanese is a lot better. And I finally found a copy of Kazetsuyo (because I forgot to bring my copy with me). (It was a stressful packing experience.)

kakehai week day 6: sun / elation

“My skin is going to fall off,” Jouta whimpers, poking at his blistering sunburn to accentuate the complaint. “It feels like wax paper.”

“I don’t think that can actually happen,” Shindou mutters from his spot by the AC box. “Skin doesn’t fall off. Just put on some aloe vera and stop whining.”

“Wow, Shindou-san becomes surprisingly mean in the heat,” Jouji grumbles, only to be kicked in the side. “Ow, I was just kidding!”

“Stop complaining,” Yuki snaps irritably. He uses the magazine he’s been fanning himself with to point threateningly at the twins. “It’s your own fault for not wearing sunscreen.”

“You sound like an old man,” Nico-senpai comments from underneath a damp washcloth. He handles the heat the worst out of all of them—although Yuki is significantly more annoyed.

“That’s funny coming from you.”

“Everybody stop bickering,” Haiji intervenes, appearing with a tray of iced tea that he sets on the coffee table. “Drink this and you’ll feel better in no time.”

While the others devour the cold drinks, Kakeru doesn’t move from his spot on the floor, opening one eye to squint through the window. The summer sun is beginning to set, but the sticky heat lingers long into the evening. Kakeru really hates the summer. His clothes become sweaty second skins, running feels like absolute hell, and sunburns are a constant occurrence. The only good thing summer has to offer is watermelon. Maybe something else too, but mostly watermelon.

Crap... Now he really wants watermelon.

“Kakeru, you alive?” Haiji’s foot nudges him in the side gently, but not gently enough to be painless.

Kakeru groans loudly in protest. “Ow, Haiji-san, sunburn…” It’s been three days, and his skin is still peeling more than old paint. He hates the feeling of sunscreen, but the pain of shedding his skin like a snake is much more uncomfortable—yet still not enough to make him remember to actually wear sunscreen. Haiji, of course, tried to remind him. Kakeru didn’t listen: a fact that Haiji will probably never let him live down.

“Poor thing. If only you could’ve prevented that with something made specifically for that purpose.” Haiji’s foot kicks him square in the back much harder, and Kakeru yelps.

“Leave the poor kid alone,” King mutters tiredly, holding a sweating tea glass against his forehead. Drops of condensation drip down his cheek, but he doesn’t seem to care. “You’re really a demon...”

“He’s fine,” Haiji dismisses, taking a seat by the table. “Oh, yeah: I almost forgot. Hana-chan is coming over with some fruit soon.”

“Hana-chan?” Jouta echoes. Both twins immediately brighten up at the mere mention of her name. “When is she coming?”

“Eh... Now?” Haiji says right as the doorbell rings. “That’s probably her. Go help—“ Everyone is already gone halfway through his sentence, leaving Kakeru alone with the grinning demon. He planned this. For some reason, he wanted them alone. Maybe for this: “Kakeru, you should put on some aloe.”

Kakeru rolls away from him and closes his eyes. “I don’t want it. It smells disgusting.”

“You need it or your skin won’t heal properly. I’ll put it on for you.” Haiji’s fingers tug at the bottom of his shirt. Kakeru quickly grabs his hand to keep from being stripped.

“I said I don’t want it, Kiyose—“ Haiji interrupts him by reaching around with his other hand and yanking Kakeru’s shirt up. “Ow, stop—“

“You stop struggling. This is for your own good.” Haiji slaps him in the center of the back hard enough to make Kakeru go completely limp. “See? That’s better. Now stay still: your sunburn will be gone in no time.”

Kakeru slumps in defeat. In the end, it’s not so bad, he supposed. The aloe smells disgusting, yes, but Haiji’s hands are gentle against his skin. He’s only like this when they’re alone, but it still makes Kakeru sigh happily. The cool feeling of the gel offers much-needed relief from the boiling heat. Haiji sent everyone away just for this quiet moment between the two of them, and that realization is warmer than the fading sunburn.

Even though Kakeru still hates summer, the heat doesn’t really bother him all that much. But he seriously needs to remember to wear sunscreen from now on… No matter how nicely Haiji applies it, aloe vera still smells a little bit like defeat.

This is the cruelest ask I’ve ever gotten. You want me to choose? Anon hate has nothing on you.

Most of these are Haikyuu?? Because thats. My Thing.

Kuroo Tetsurou. I know, I know, he’s a big nerd and not a sex god but honestly? That makes it better. He’s got the looks of a guy who knows what hes doing but he doesn’t. I want to fluster him.

Sawamura Daichi. Thicc. Daddy vibes.

Oikawa Tooru. I like cocky men.

Daishou Suguru. Sssnake that can be soft and a bitch.

Terushima Yuuji. I must hate myself on some level.

All of these have been captains so far.

Iwaizumi Hajime. Like Daichi, but more intense and also a bit more simple-minded. (Iwaizumi only seems smart in comparison to Oikawa, fight me.)

Aone Takanobu. Big teddy bear. Looks like he’d be soft n gentle. His current concern pulls at my heartstrings.

Tanaka Ryuunosuke and Yamamoto Taketora, for the same reasons. Buff and absolutely brainless. .

Nishinoya Yuu. Cocky and brainless. Also, hes a crop top, and short tops are SO valid.

There are a lot more sexy boys in HQ but those are like, at the top of my list.

Bakugou Katsuki. Kirishima Eijirou. Todoroki Shouto. Shinsou Hitoshi. Shindo Yo. Sero Hanta. 

Aomine Daiki, because I finally ran out of HQ boys, and Aomine looks like he could do horrible things to me.

Hey, just wanted to say that I love your writing on RWTW. Finishing the anime has left quite a void in me, and of all the things I want more from this show, Haiji's backstory takes the cake. If they ever decided to provide more content (unlikely af), I think a prequel focusing on Haiji's highschool days, his rela with his dad/Fujioka, him breaking down and having that epiphany moment, his 4 years spent "getting stronger" (sounds like an epic char arc we never got) would do. What do you think?

It would be interesting to explore Haiji’s backstory for sure! Although I’d see it more as an OVA special because I don’t feel like there’d be enough material to sustain a full season. Also, I think it’d be even better if they explored his backstory retrospectively from the post ekiden arcs, with Haiji already training Kakeru as a coach. The main reason being that this would allow them to write the rest of the Aotake members (and Fujioka) in as cameos and/or touch on their future stories a little more as well.

Much as I love Haiji, I don’t think it should be all about Haiji, and ultimately the MC is still Kakeru and Kazetsuyo just won’t feel the same unless the full Aotake squad is represented, imo, but I am very partial towards “found familes” and squad feels give me life!  

That said, you know what would be really cool (and actually feasible!!) also? If they animated the bonus short story that Miura-sensei wrote for the Kazetsuyo novel, which is a story told from Nira’s point of view! It’s a special she did that was printed on a limited run of dust jackets that featured the anime illustration. I would love more than anything else in the world for Nira to be the narrator, ngl!

oh my first year children, you made mama haiji go into oni mode lol (but in all seriousness, i get so worried that haiji is so calm, like there’s this end of the world feeling that’s settling in, so he’s hyper focused on what he can do in the present because it feels like there’s no tomorrow. i really hope i’m just reading too much into it (◕︿◕✿)

I usually prefer to distance myself from fandom engagement, but your work was truly captivating so I wanted to say something. Even though it doesn't really match my so-called head-canon the world you created completely blew my mind, can't stop re-readind it. Thank you for that, dear author.

Oh geez oh wow thank you so much for reading the words my brain talks my fingers into spewing and for thinking about them and enjoying them, especially if they don’t match up with headcanons; I personally really like finding fics that give me a new or unexpected take on characters, but I know some people don’t as much ha!
