Dear Tumblr, I wrote this song with a friend about 2 years ago, and it's finally time that I shared it with you. This song has meant everything to me because it was the first song that I ever wrote that I immediately had to share it with someone, and so I sent it to my sister right when it was finished. The truth is, I'm not sure I would have ever been able to write this song if another friend of mine hadn't encouraged me to sign up for tumblr 7 years ago, and I'm so glad I did. I know tumblr is complicated and often messy, but it has taught me so much. Especially things about feminism. And I know feminism via tumblr is also complicated and often messy, but I think we can all agree that at it's most basic level, feminism is just about celebrating being a woman in all its forms. And so I wrote this song about being down but coming back stronger than ever by embracing the strength of who I am, and that one of the things that I am is a woman. It's a song about boldly walking away from anything toxic in your life, and not letting those things bring you down any longer. The song is called "Stilettos," because stiletto high heels have an inherent femininity to them, but they also have an inherent power to them. They and not soft, quiet, or discreet. They make you stand taller and your own footsteps sound bolder. I am a mostly quiet and introverted person but when I wear heels (of any height,) sometimes it feels like I'm borrowing a suit of armor from all the boss ladies who have came before me. High heels are worn by top notch lawyers, politicians, CEOs, and so many other people all over the world. People who run the world and take no crap. My friend and I were trying to come up with a song to write, and the second she said the world "stilettos," I ran with it, and this song was born. It means the world to me, and I hope you give the song a listen, and that it means something to you. With my whole heart, I hope you listen to this song and I hope you like it. I hope this song inspires you to never settle for less than you deserve. I hope it inspires you to walk away from anything in your life that may be destroying you. I hope you come back stronger than ever, and I hope you leave them all staring blankly at the space where you just left, listening to "the echo of the sound of stilettos on the ground."

“William Paterson gave me my identity. I left high school happy, but totally unconfident in who I was or what I could become, and unsure of my ability to impact those around me. All of that changed once I started college. I was lucky enough to be grouped with a cluster of students who were all like-minded and interesting, I learned from some accomplished seniors on how to produce a kick-ass sports television show, and I started to think for myself. I found a voice and a passion for what I cared about. It only got better as time went on, eventually hosting the (award-winning) sports show, presenting an honors thesis, getting into radio, and making friends who have constantly reminded me that I can do everything I set my mind to. It’s bittersweet knowing I’m leaving it behind, but i’m grateful to William Paterson for allowing me to get my career jumpstarted weeks after finishing classes, and setting me up for a future I’ve always dreamed of, personally and professionally.
