These are my current “TO READ” books. How do I pick which book to read first? It’s easy. The husband and I each take one book and read aloud the book jacket. Then we vote on which book sounds better. When we have 3 books left, we read the “blurbs” and vote who has cooler friends who helped them get the best blurbs. When we have two books left we each read the first page of our book out loud and try to make it sound as enticing as possible. And afterwards we vote on which book wins. If the vote is not unanimous I get to break the tie because I’m the one who is reading the book. This isn’t fair but it doesn’t matter because this is a totally silly and made up contest, which we have done a few times because we have a constant influx of books we want to read coming into the house. (I have been a compulsive book buyer forever.) What book won? Well, they all did because I’m going to read them all. It’s rare I praise ads, but these Boomerang ones are tight! (Hmmm... are people still saying “tight”? I guess I could have said “dope AF”? Basically I’m trying not to say “awesome” all the time anymore... because I sound like a 90’s teenager. #haha) I could make some belabored writerly point about dialogue and the way a character speaks will say so much about them, blah blah... but I’m not gonna. It’s been raining for 5 days in a row in LA and I would rather talk about how no one can talk about anything else right now. Which I find... hilarious. An entire major metropolitan city talking about the weather. Though there is a city in Maine called Westbrook (population 18,000+ compared to the 4 million people here in LA) where they have a 300 foot ice disk that formed in the towns river that was spinning but has now stopped. Seriously, it’s kinda crazy... and their whole town is talking about that. That seems far more interesting to me. Wow, I’ve totally lost all control of this Insta post. Haha. It happens. Especially when it rains for 5 days in a row... (I am sitting in my dog’s bed right now typing this and my husband was just like, “what are you doing?” And I’m like, “what?” And he’s like “you’re sitting in the dog’s bed.” But that’s because I had to do so to get this cute pic of my dog for her Insta... and then I opened up IG to post that pic and I saw Ben’s Boomerang post... and now we’ve come full circle... like a giant ice disk floating in a river in Maine.) Just a few highlights from my Anna K Tuesday in New York City. Jagged Little Pill is a very important album to me. We came to NYC to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends and I was able to see Alanis perform at the Apollo and saw the EXCEPTIONAL new musical on Broadway a few hours ago! Our anniversary officially started at 3PM PST (I had a deadline to turn something in at 2PM)!! It’s been 4 years since we eloped in Vegas with our best friends as witnesses. The bride wore white sneakers! It’s the fruit and flower anniversary, husband got me 4 dozen roses (I felt so fancy!) and a bunch of plays (ie: Phoebe Waller Bridge and Martin McDonough plays, since they’re a couple too!) But my fav is the painting he did for me of Marc Antony and Cleo — our favorite cartoon couple- it’s the cartoon I showed him when we met in 2014! *fun fact, Anna K’s horse is named Marc Antony for this cartoon dog in the book* / I got husband new floral swim trunks and a secret surprise. #staytuned We are VERY lucky to have found each other! I have a Halloween candy hangover. That’s the 1st thing to know. The 2nd is lots of people complain about work, and sure it’s exhausting at times, but I am fortunate to love writing books and for TV. It’s just super fun for me. I’m grateful for my career and I strongly feel it’s important to give back... to help newer writers coming up after me the way I was helped on my way up. Yesterday, I attended the WGA Asian Writers Town Hall annual meeting and it was very inspiring... encouraging progress has been made in Hollywood when it comes to diverse storytelling and there are many devoted to the cause who are working hard to push things forward. (Do your part people, I’m busy too, but I volunteered to be a mentor.) What I have also learned lately is it’s important to not work ALL the time (which I have a tendency to do, and I had a doctor tell/ lecture me about this... #postureisimportant) so now I am trying to schedule in non work time where I relax (whatever that means) and go do fun stuff (though, doing fun stuff has never been my problem... #haha) Anyway I saw my first pole dancing show and attended a Halloween party with my husband and some of my besties, even though I’d much rather write about a Halloween party than dress up and go to a real one. Tomorrow I’m dropping off copies of my book galleys for my producers, studio, network, agents, and lawyers. I need to sign them all, but before I do I wanted to have a little fun (ie: wanted to procrastinate from writing) so I asked my husband if he would help. He sweetly agreed, and truth be told, he was the architect of the project while I just watched YouTube videos of dominos and said things like, “ooh, can we straighten out the top of the A, and should we put the lower part of the K upside down so they will fall correctly?” (He said no and to not touch anything!) The goal was to spell Anna K, but we didn’t have the floor space, so we improvised. First video is the overhead shot, and the second video is in slow-mo! We got it on the first take!
