I’ll probably never not get into a brain tizzy over Disney’s claim that their Sleeping Beauty is based on Perrault’s “la belle dormant.”
I suppose it’s similar in some regards — it has a “Christening” of sorts and fairies (even if earlier Grimm drafts did too). The fairies put everyone to sleep after the curse takes effect. (Everyone falls asleep in Grimm too; both take time to describe the frozen and silly tableau of sleeping people and animals.)
But where Disney’s deviates from Perrault — 100 yr sleep vs a few hours; waking up when the prince kneels by her bed vs waking up when the prince kisses her (Grimm); ogress mother-in-law vs happy ending right after kiss (Grimm). So...
Celebrating birth = Perrault
Fairies = Perrault (& early Grimm)
Up a tower & spindle (Grimm)
Fairies put everyone to sleep (Perrault)
Deadly looking briars (Grimm)
Awaken by a kiss (Grimm)
Ends soon after (Grimm)
What I think bugs me is that the parts that match Perrault are in Grimm too. In earlier drafts, the Grimms had fairies too, I believe.
Key defining feature of Perrault’s version:
Christening
Fairies
100 yr sleep
Prince kneels -> awakes
Ogress mother-in-law
Key defining features of the Grimms' version:
Frog
Spindle on the top of a tower
Briars of death (impaled princes 👍 love the imagery)
Kiss -> awakes
Both include:
An entire castle asleep

yet it gave people a happy, uplifting, free feeling. because that's what wishes are supposed to feel like in this world. and he's determining who gets to feel free and/or fulfilled.
It was magic, though quite clumsy and amateurish. It was also completely forbidden.
Wish (2023) dir. Fawn Veerasunthorn, Chris Buck
#i'm weird. ignore me#sorry i have a hard time with the idea that magnifico was right to keep wishes from people#like i understand the logic of saying: you don't know what inspiring the next generation could be. it could lead to disaster#so it's good of him to keep wishes back and only give out the most mild ones#but the movie does establish that this is like giving up your central core that makes you vitally *alive*#and i don't think you should keep people's wish/ambition to live away from them#gif#disney#disney musings#wish 2023#moving gif#wsd weird brain#wsd pedantic brain

Hang the FUCK on
I'm really getting tinhatty but I NEED to get things out of my brain or I'm not sleeping
IF????? Ok if the 20 MDs were working on a combo devil fruit and fucked up somehow or something - the guy died and it respawned near Chopper, or it needed to be grown on a tree in the forest or some shit, or it fell out of one of their pockets and Chopper found it while grazing or what the fuck EVER
Like ik the reference is that humans have some shared genes w mushrooms. I KNOW
But it also looks a whole fucking lot like two separate devil fruits combined.
And we never saw Chopper find it or eat it.
Also, there's the weird mushroom thing - I mean why the fuck did Jango get a mushroom growing on his face and then it gave him hypnosis powers I mean really. But some people have speculated about a mushroom race...Luffy ate all these weird mushrooms on Amazon Lily . ...whatever. mushrooms have a weird role in the story idfk. Maybe it wsd a devil fruit x literally magic mushroom combo
Idk!!!
I just like, ??? What if choppers devil fruit seems so fucking weird cause it was a like prototype way to combo a fruit, but approached from a medical science perspective instead of a like chemical and robotics science perspective? Again, these are distincted as two fairly intensely separate sciences in the op world, not a whole lot of overlap. Vegapunk is making clones and green blood but he ain't augmenting humans or healing them afaik
"Why are the castle guards gone?" "The 20 MDs are having them look for some mushroom that can cure all diseases" why the hell would they be doing that if kureha OBVIOUSLY knows that's not a real thing, and the MDs are shown to be pretty on par with her in terms of goodass doctors. Why the fuck would they think that was a real thing?
Unless the guys talking about it misunderstood - and it was something they created, and somehow lost.
Tbh - we never saw blackbeard eat his fruit either, did we? He had it when he fought Ace but like are we sure he didn't wait to eat it once he had it, go to drum, had it augmented, THEN ate it in the 2ish months til ace caught up with him?
I mean there's also a nonzero chance wapol ate blackbeard and combined him w someone else like chessmarimo lmfao that was two guys in one guy. Didnt they both have devil fruits? Maybe he's the first guy to have two fruits lmfao. Maybe they're also foreshadowing for huge blackbeard reveals later
Im losing it why are people not talking about what tf blackbeard was doing on Drum I need someone to be insane with about this

my thoughts on the results:
don't think Gabor should have done so well. Her character voices are essentially the same type of character. Same with Harris. Ditto for Audley. Not that I don't enjoy the characters, but it's just doing their usual voice in the same kind of character template.
In terms of voice quality range, it's Foray without a doubt. But I feel Holloway and Felton deserves special mention just cause both use the same voice but in very different roles.
Tell me Kaa and Pooh have the same vibes, even if they sound the same. Ditto for the Queen of Hearts, the Fairy Godmother, and Flora.
feel Thompson deserves a special nod, just cause he's does a pretty good diverse range. Good job!
Luddy does a medium range of diversity of characters using just her normal voice. While Merriwether, Lady, and Kanga are all basically good characters, the way their personality are expressed are quite different.
Cabot gets bonus points for being the Winnie the Pooh narrator.
Also, just realizing now that people may have been voting for looks not voices. Haha! 😅
Thank u so much for making this blog! Logging on to read all the silly tags of ppl fighting for their lives to convince others to vote for their faves is so wonderful to see. Seeing all of this after a long day being an adult and having responsibilities is so nice and relaxing. And I love how you have inspired some other fandom battle Royale polls too <3 I am low key hoping someone pits all the animated disney characters together (Mufasa from the lion king on top!!!) anyway thank u so much for everything! Can’t wait to see who wins the actor and actress battles!
Thank you! Has no one done a Disney character poll yet? That's nuts.
anyway apropos of nothing. here's this

If you'd like to base your vote off their voices, not their faces, you can hear clips of each of them below:
June Foray (Lucifer in Cinderella)
Verna Felton and Barbara Luddy (Flora and Merriweather, respectively)
Eleanor Audley (Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty)
Phil Harris and Charles Sebastian Thomas Cabot (Baloo and Bagheera, respectively)
Sterling Holloway and Eva Gabor (Roquefort the mouse and Duchess the Cat)
Bill Thompson (The Dodo and The White Rabbit in this same clip from Alice in Wonderland)
edit: fucked up and put the wrong Phil in. It's Phil Harris apparently. The Disney people are allowed to eat me now.

honestly impressed how well Frobin is doing in @onepiece-polls's bonus shipping polls, if only because all the other contestants have higher fanfic counts on ao3

Had a rambling post on how to rearrange events in the New World if you delete Punk Hazard.
It's strange how the post-timeskip arcs are somehow the most concise (in terms of actual point) but bloated with content.
For example, Punk Hazard sets up the goal of defeating Kaido. That runs through Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou and Wano. It also includes Law's backstory, Dolfamingo's backstory, Sabo's return, themes of memory and being forgotten, the samurai of Wano and the Kozuki Clan, the Road Ponegylphs*, and more history about Roger's journey.
So, yeah. There's a lot of stuff that is brought up. But it's all crammed under the same goal. There's no break really.
Look at it this way:
In the first half of the Grandline, we have Help Save Vivi's Kingdom followed by Find a City of Gold. Those are very different arcs, both of which were two of the longest arcs at the time. (Skypiea still comes in fourth or fifth longest I think?). This is followed by Get a Shipwright, which, uh, has a lot of other stuff happening and really turns more into Fighting the Government.
Which, you know, makes me realize that in some of the arcs usually considered the best of the story so far, whatever impetus starts the Straw Hats onto whatever island they're on or whatever the goal is, that's not where in ends. Water 7 starts with fixing the Merry and finding a shipwright. That is not how things go. Sabaody starts with going to Fishman Island. That's not how things go. Impel Down starts with Luffy wanting to save Ace. That's now how things go.
That twist around, even an ultimately triumphant one like in Water 7/Enies Lobby, hasn't really happened, far as I can recall. I think Egghead might be the closest, but I'd have to have the full arc complete to make a judgment.
This does make me want to re-read the post-timeskip arcs because I'm just not as familiar with the details or the story structure. (What are you doing narratively? What are you setting up? Where are you going? How are you telling this story? What do you add? What are you enhancing?)
I dunno, this got rambling too, but sometimes it feels like we went from Save the Island to Stop the Scientist to Save the Island to Help the Island to Get Sanji Back to Save the Island to Help the Scientist. Can I have something different? Or at least, can there be some switch around? I think the biggest surprise so far as been the mystery angle of Egghead (yay) and Gear 5.
*this is one of the few parts that is relevant to Whole Cake Island

my only addition is that it's a bit of a reverse Cinderella, in regards to social standing; it's a move from royalty to commoner, rather than commoner to royalty
whole cake island is the best Cinderella retelling we have seen in ages. It really follows it's source material in its themes of abusive relationships and following your dreams. And it doesn't try to turn Cinderella into a girlboss heroine. She is strong enough for surviving an abusive situation! Her kindness is her greatest strength!
You're so right I can't even say anything you summed it all up perfectly 👏👏
#but yes it's very structurally similar to the popular cinderella themes (see Disney or Rogers and Hammerstein)#i don't recall perrault or grimm having much to do with dreams#it was more goodness of obedience than kindness#(perrault you had weird morals)#whole cake arc#cinderella#cinderella retelling#disney's cinderella#cendrillion#wsd weird brain#yes i know very specific details about fairy tales and talking/sharing it makes me happy#one piece#it also falls into the subset of cinderlads#fairy tales#sanji

I am fascinated by how the quarterfinals of @captainsvscaptains seems to be four match-ups of
(1) one person who is, in theory (I think) part of a structural system and get their title of captain from their status therein (Star Trek)
(2) and another who is anti-structure or ambiguous (pirates, space, taking out slavers*) and get their title of captain more (maybe?) from an acknowledge by others/by choice
*I saw this in Inej's propaganda and I know it applies to Luffy
#i may be completely incorrect about this#i really only know luffy and elizabeth#i've seen a few star trek tos in the last year and tng years ago so that's all i really know aside from what I read in the polls#wsd weird brain#in one piece speech it's like marines vs pirates#curiously i don't think anyone submitted any marines; i don't recall any in the preliminary polls#sorry smoker \(:|)/
